Athymic nude (nu/nu) mice and their phenotypically normal (nu/+) littermates displayed a similar susceptibility to acute lethal infection withAbsidia corymbifera. Although the clinical manifestations of acute infection were also similar in both groups, the nude mice tended to develop more extensive lesions and were less effective in eliminating viableA. corymbifera spores than their heterozygous littermates. The results suggested that thymus-dependent processes did not play an essential role in primary resistance to mucormycosis.

We studied Thomomys bottae pocket gophers from 1979 to 1982 to determine if the amount of gene flow between local populations was sufficient to reduce allele frequency differences between them. Dispersal was quantified using three different trap techniques, and genetic changes in the population were monitored using protein variants. Additional allele frequency data were available for 1976 and 1977. We observed dispersal to be common in pre-reproductive juvenile females throughout the breeding season of their birth. Males on the other hand tended to disperse only from the end of the breeding season. Although dispersal was common, 63% of adults appeared to be recruited within 40 m of where they were born. Gene flow occurred into both established populations and into vacant habitat, but it was too low to reduce the differences in gene frequencies between the fields over seven years. We conclude that allelic diversity in T. bottae populations is a balance between random drift due to small effective population size and gene flow.  相似文献

Summary The interaction between the anther smutMicrobotryum violaceum and its hostSilene dioica was studied during 1985–1990 in 47 populations of different ages, sizes and densities, in an archipelago area in northern Sweden. The sizes of these populations had also been surveyed in the early 1970s. Our results indicate that establishment ofMicrobotryum violaceum is host-size and density dependent. Firstly, young populations ofSilene dioica that became diseased during the study were larger and tended to be more dense than young populations that remained healthy. Secondly, populations diseased in both 1985 and 1990 were found to be larger and tended to be more dense than populations healthy in both years. We were able to document that the pathogen actually failed to establish in two small young populations (diseased plants died shortly after they appeared) and did go extinct in one small old population. Disease incidences within populations did not show large fluctuations between years. The highest increases in disease incidence during the study were found in three relatively young populations that were disease-free at the start of the study. Older populations highly diseased at the start showed less of an increase. Our study indicates thatMicrobotryum violaceum acts as a regulatory factor influencing the rate of increase inSilene dioica populations, once they are sufficiently large to maintain the pathogen. Firstly, seedling density decreased with increased incidence of disease and a seed addition experiment indicated seed-limited recuritment in highly diseased populations. Secondly, those populations that reached very large sizes or densities were either healthy or had very low incidences, indicating the potential for populations that for one reason or another escape an epidemic. However, in the comparison of changes in population size over 16–18 years there was no simple correlation between expansion rate and disease incidence.  相似文献

Vocalizations used for long-range communication must disperse without significant structural changes to be decoded by receivers. The acoustic adaptation hypothesis (AAH) holds that, since acoustic signals are influenced by the habitat in which they disperse, sounds will possess specific structural characteristics to diminish sound degradation. Additionally, vocalizations can also be influenced by genetics, anatomy, and/or cultural aspects. Here, we tested the AAH through quantitative comparisons of roars in four allopatric populations of the black-and-gold howler monkey (Alouatta caraya) across an environmental gradient from open to closed, in northeastern Argentina. At each site, we obtained good-quality recordings from three adult males, also between July and November 2013, conducted vegetation surveys (measuring tree density, canopy closure, and vertical structure), evaluated potential masking of roars by gathering environmental sound samples, and assessed sound attenuation of a synthetic tone at three different distances: 10 m (landmark reference distance), 50, and 100 m. We also tested the alternative hypothesis that acoustic properties of roars could be explained by population genetic divergence. Our results did not support the AAH. Although our four study sites were significantly different in vegetation structure, conforming to an open-to-closed gradient, roars of A. caraya were not different among populations. Likewise, although environmental sound differed between sites, we found no evidence of environmental sound affecting the acoustic properties of roars. The attenuation of the synthetic tone was only near significant at 100 m distance between both extreme sites from the environmental gradient. The four A. caraya study populations grouped into three genetically differentiated clusters. Since roar features were independent from population genetic clustering, we reject the genetic hypothesis too. The combination of high amplitude and low peak frequency of roars, coupled to small home range size and extensive overlap between neighboring groups, allows roars to keep their communication value across habitats without need of specific environmental tuning.  相似文献

In metapopulations, the maintenance of local populations can depend on source–sink dynamics, where populations with positive growth rate seed populations with negative growth rate. The pattern and probability of successful dispersal among habitats can therefore be crucial in determining whether local populations will become rare or increase in abundance. We present here data on the dispersal strategy and population dynamics of three marine amphipods living in pen shells (Atrina rigida) in the Gulf of Mexico. The three amphipod species in this study disperse at different life stages. Neomegamphopus hiatus and Melita nitida disperse as adults, while Bemlos unicornis disperses as juveniles. The two species that disperse as adults have the highest initial population sizes when a new shell becomes available, likely caused by the arriving females releasing their brood into these recently occupied shells. This dispersal pattern results in initially higher population growth, but fewer occupied shells, as noted by their clumped distribution. In contrast, the species that disperses as juveniles accumulates more slowly and more evenly across habitats, eventually dominating the other two in terms of numerical abundance. The metapopulation dynamics of the three species seems to be highly dependent on the life history stage involved in dispersal. Spatial variation in phenology can occur at small spatial scales over which individuals can disperse or forage within one generation. Previous studies have assumed that variations in phenological peaks are caused by differences in abiotic environmental characteristics. However, environments should generally be similar among local habitats over small spatial scales. When the local population size is small, the phenological peak of the local population should be strongly affected by the variation in timing expressed by individuals. If a regional population consists of small local subpopulations (e.g., a metapopulation), the stochastic processes regulated by population sizes may explain the spatial variation in phenology. In this study, we quantitatively evaluated the extent of the spatial and annual variations in the breeding phenology of the forest green tree frog, Rhacophorus arboreus habiting a small area (<10 km2). The spatial variation in phenological peaks among 25 breeding sites was large over 6 years. This spatial variation was not explained by differences in air temperature or water depth. Randomization tests revealed that a large portion of the spatial variation could be explained by differences in population size, without considering site-specific factors. Annual variations in phenological peaks tended to be greater for smaller populations. These results imply that the stochastic process might have caused the spatial and annual variations in the phenological peaks of R. arboreus observed in the study region. Understanding spatiotemporal variation in phenology determined by stochastic process would be important to better predict interspecific interactions and (meta)population dynamics at small spatial scales.  相似文献

Breeding dispersal among territorial species is of interest to population biologists because leaving a territory carries fundamental risks to the dispersing individuals, and this may not outweigh the costs of maintaining the territory. Most studies of breeding dispersal have focused on species inhabiting spatially open populations, in which undetected emigration could impart a negative bias to estimates of dispersal. We studied breeding dispersal in an isolated (spatially closed) population of California Spotted Owl Strix occidentalis occidentalis in southern California for 12 years to assess factors that might correlate with breeding dispersal. Twenty‐nine per cent (n = 47) of territorial females and 19% (n = 35) of territorial males dispersed at least once during the study. Annually, 0–13% of the territorial females and 0–12% of the territorial males dispersed. Among a set of a priori and post hoc models related to breeding dispersal, the top a priori model indicated that birds having higher reproductive output relative to the population average were less likely to disperse. A post hoc model based on an index of territory quality was ranked higher than the top a priori model and indicated that birds occupying higher quality territories were less likely to disperse. These two models were correlated and represented short‐ and long‐term reproductive performance, respectively. Birds that dispersed also failed to fledge young in the year prior to dispersal, but the failure to fledge young did not, by itself, explain dispersal. Because Spotted Owls are long‐lived, they may ultimately improve their reproduction by dispersing given that they would have future opportunities to breed over the long term. Birds whose mates are likely to have died tended to improve their reproductive success, whereas the relationship between reproductive success of birds that divorced was less clear. Substantial variation in breeding dispersal was unexplained by our analysis so it is likely that the motivation to disperse was a complex process in this population.  相似文献

This paper reports the body size distributions and sex ratios of four species of phyrnosomatid lizard that colonized experimentally created density sinks. The experiments were conducted in western Colorado in 1992, and lizards colonizing the habitats in 1993 were compared to those removed in 1992 and those present in 1991. Lizards colonizing the density sinks were able to disperse from adjacent habitat. For two of the species (Urosaurus ornatus and Sceloporus undulatus), colonizing lizards were significantly smaller than either those removed in 1992 or those present in 1991. Two other species (S. graciosus and Uta stansburiana) showed no difference in the size distribution of colonizing and removed lizards. In addition, sex ratios of colonizing lizards did not differ from those removed in 1992 or present in 1991. The results of the experiments have implications for the dynamics of the target populations, rescue of local populations from extinction, the regional persistence of populations subject to turnover in patchy environments, and priority effects in colonization. 1. Cerambyx welensii (Cw) and Cerambyx cerdo (Cc) are two large saproxylic beetles living on Quercus trees in the Western Palearctic whose current pest and legal status differs markedly. Cw is an emerging pest involved in oak decline while Cc is an internationally protected species. 2. Acquiring knowledge of the ecology, demography and behaviour of Cw and Cc in forests harbouring mixed populations is a demanding task to optimise their management or protection. Here, we report the results of a mark–recapture study on the flight behaviour and dispersal potential of both species in holm oak open woodlands. 3. Average flights, dispersal rates and diffusion models were remarkably similar in Cw and Cc, reflecting a low‐dispersal tendency and sedentary behaviour. However, a subset of adults in both species exhibited a huge propensity to disperse and flew more than 1 km. An aggregated distribution of dispersal distances suggested that a behavioural polymorphism might underlie the flight pattern. 4. Adults moved preferentially in those spatial directions with neighbouring trees, while prevailing winds did not significantly affect dispersal patterns. The main interspecific differences were as follows: (i) Cc performed longer crosswind flights than Cw on windy days; (ii) Cc tended to fly farther than Cw at low temperatures; and (iii) adult feeding improved dispersal but only in small Cw females. Moon phase did not affect flight activity. 5. The results are discussed in an effort to interpret how these ecological and behavioural differences might shape the life history of both congeneric species when they live in sympatry in dehesa woodlands.  相似文献

Summary Preliminary surveys indicate that most populations of Lupinus succulentus are genetically monomorphic for three flower color loci, viz., BB PP DD. In one small geographic area, a number of populations were polymorphic for the D/d locus. In this case, clinal variation and seasonal variation were found. The S/s locus, affecting seed coat pattern, was polymorphic in a large majority of populations and genetic variation at this locus is present in all but a very few colonies. When subdivisions of five large populations were studied, genetic differentiation was found within two of these populations. Gene frequencies tended toward the limits of zero or one in populations from relatively undisturbed sites but tended toward intermediate values in the more disturbed ruderal populations presumed to be recently colonized. It is concluded that recently colonized populations are not always genetically uniform. This work supported in part by National Institutes of Health Grant GM 10476  相似文献

Two species of wood mouse, Apodemus argenteus and A. speciosus, were observed consuming and hoarding acorns of Quercus serrata and Castanopsis cuspidata. When each species of acorn was supplied individually, both species of mice used each species of acorn for eating and hoarding. When both species of acorn were supplied, A. argenteus consumed or hoarded only C. cuspidata, whereas A. speciosus tended to eat C. cuspidata acorns at the feeding site, and disperse or hoard Q. serrata acorns. Apodemus speciosus is unlikely to disperse C. cuspidata acorns (their utilization was biased towards consumption) when Q. serrata acorns are also available. Apodemus argenteus will make almost no contribution to the dispersal of Q. serrata when the two acorn species coexist.  相似文献

We investigated geographic color variation of the beetle Phelotrupes auratus in the Kinki region of central Japan using a spectrophotometer. The reflectance spectrum of the dorsal surface of the elytron was measured for beetles collected from 23 sites. We focused on λmax(α), the wavelength at the peak (α peak) between 400 and 700 nm (human visual sensitivity range), for analyses of color variation. In populations distributed on the Kii Peninsula, in the southern part of the Kinki region, average λmax(α) values were lower (480–497 nm) than in populations distributed in the area west of Lake Biwa, the western part of the Kinki region (618–633 nm). For populations distributed in the areas south and southeast of Lake Biwa, a geographic cline of λmax(α) was observed approximately along an east–west transect, with average λmax values varying continuously from 624 to 557 nm. The easternmost populations along this cline had almost the same λmax(α) values as the populations distributed west of Lake Biwa. The coefficient of variation for λmax(α) tended to be larger in populations with intermediate averages than those with lower or higher average values.  相似文献

The ability of congenitally mast cell-deficient W/Wv anemic mice and mast cell-reconstituted W/Wv mice to reject the intestinal parasite Nippostrongylus brasiliensis was examined. The W/Wv mice were deficient in connective tissue mast cells and mucosal mast cells and, unlike normal mice, did not accumulate intestinal mucosal mast cells in response to N. brasiliensis infection. They had higher peak egg counts than did normal littermates and were slower than littermates to reject the parasites. Reconstitution with bone marrow or spleen cells repaired both the connective tissue and mucosal mast cell defects in W/Wv mice but did not alter the time of parasite rejection or decrease the high peak egg counts. These results indicate that mucosal mast cells that accumulate in the small intestine in response to parasite infection may not be functionally involved in the rejection mechanism.  相似文献

Reproductive output and cognitive performance decline in parallel during aging, but it is unknown whether this reflects a shared genetic architecture or merely the declining force of natural selection acting independently on both traits. We used experimental evolution in Drosophila melanogaster to test for the presence of genetic variation for slowed cognitive aging, and assess its independence from that responsible for other traits’ decline with age. Replicate experimental populations experienced either joint selection on learning and reproduction at old age (Old + Learning), selection on late‐life reproduction alone (Old), or a standard two‐week culture regime (Young). Within 20 generations, the Old + Learning populations evolved a slower decline in learning with age than both the Old and Young populations, revealing genetic variation for cognitive aging. We found little evidence for a genetic correlation between cognitive and demographic aging: although the Old + Learning populations tended to show higher late‐life fecundity than Old populations, they did not live longer. Likewise, selection for late reproduction alone did not result in improved late‐life learning. Our results demonstrate that Drosophila harbor genetic variation for cognitive aging that is largely independent from genetic variation for demographic aging and suggest that these two aspects of aging may not necessarily follow the same trajectories.  相似文献

The reduced bone resorption characteristic of osteopetrosis is accompanied in the incisors-absent (ia) rat mutation by a significant increase in osteoclasts of inactive (mutant) phenotype. Restoration of bone resorption in ia rats by transfer of spleen cells from normal littermates is preceded by a transformation of osteoclasts from mutant to normal phenotype. In this investigation the proportions of osteoclasts of normal phenotype have been determined by light microscopy in untreated ia and normal rats and in ia rats treated with various cell populations from normal rats. Significant increases in numbers of osteoclasts of normal phenotype were seen in the mutant skeleton soon after cell treatments that eventually restored bone resorption and cured the disease. No changes in osteoclast phenotype were seen after cell transfers that did not cure the disease. These data establish transformation of osteoclast phenotype as an early event in the recovery from osteopetrosis and suggest that determination of osteoclast phenotype is a reliable predictor of the success of normal cell populations to restore bone resorption in this mutation.  相似文献

Worldwide, botanical gardens cultivate around 80,000 taxa, corresponding to approximately one‐quarter of all vascular plants. Most cultivated taxa are, however, held in a small number of collections, and mostly only in small populations. Lack of genetic exchange and stochastic processes in small populations make them susceptible to detrimental genetic effects, which should be most severe in annual species, as sowing cycles are often short. In order to assess whether ex situ cultivation affects genetic diversity of annuals, five annual arable species with similar breeding systems were assessed with 42 in situ populations being compared to 20 ex situ populations using a random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis approach. Population sizes tended to be lower under ex situ cultivation and levels of genetic diversity also tended to be lower in four of the five species, with differences being significant in only two. Ex situ populations showed incomplete representation of alleles found in the wild. The duration of cultivation did not indicate any effect on genetic diversity. This implies that cultivation strategies resulted in different genetic structures in the garden populations. Although not unequivocally pronounced, differences nonetheless imply that conservation strategies in the involved gardens may need improvement. One option is cold storage of seeds, a practice that is not currently followed in the studied ex situ collections. This may reflect that the respective gardens focus on displaying living plant populations.  相似文献

Summary The frequencies of floral morphs in populations of tristylous Eichhornia paniculata often deviate from the theoretical expectation of equality. This variation is associated with the breakdown of tristyly and the evolution of self-fertilization. Differences in morph frequencies could result from selection pressures due to variable levels of insect visitation to populations and contrasting foraging behavior among the floral morphs. We estimated pollinator densities in 16 populations and quantified visitation sequences to morphs in five populations of E. paniculata in northeastern Brazil. Foraging behavior among floral morphs was measured as the frequency of visits to morphs relative to their frequency in the population (preference) and number of flights between inflorescences of the same versus different morphs (constancy). Pollinator density (number/m2/minute) was not correlated with population size, plant density or morph diversity. Pollinator densities varied most among populations of less than 200 plants. Whether pollinators discriminated among the morphs, depended on whether they primarily collected nectar or pollen. In four populations, nectar-feeding bees (Ancyloscelis and Florilegus spp.) and butterflies showed no consistent preference or constancy among the morphs. In contrast, pollen-collecting bees (Trigona sp.) visited a lower proportion of longstyled inflorescences than expected and tended to visit more mid-and short-styled inflorescences in succession, once they were encountered. Pollinator constancy for morphs did not result from differences in inflorescence production or spatial patchiness among the morphs. Although non-random pollinator visitation to morphs in heterostylous populations could potentially affect mating and hence morph frequencies, the observed visitation patterns in this study do not provide evidence that pollinators play a major role in influencing floral morph frequencies.  相似文献

Predators can affect prey populations and, via trophic cascades, predators can indirectly impact resource populations (2 trophic levels below the predator) through consumption of prey (density-mediated indirect effects; DMIEs) and by inducing predator-avoidance behavior in prey (trait-mediated indirect effects; TMIEs). Prey often employ multiple predator-avoidance behaviors, such as dispersal or reduced foraging activity, but estimates of TMIEs are usually on individual behaviors. We assessed direct and indirect predator effects in a mesocosm experiment using a marine food chain consisting of a predator (toadfish – Opsanus tau), prey (mud crab - Panopeus herbstii) and resource (ribbed mussel – Geukensia demissa). We measured dispersal and foraging activity of prey separately by manipulating both the presence and absence of the predator, and whether prey could or could not disperse into a predator-free area. Consumption of prey was 9 times greater when prey could not disperse, probably because mesocosm boundaries increased predator capture success. Although predator presence did not significantly affect the number of crabs that emigrated, the presence of a predator decreased resource consumption by prey, which resulted in fewer resources consumed for each prey that emigrated in the presence of a predator, and reduced the overall TMIE. When prey were unable to disperse, TMIEs on mussel survival were 3 times higher than the DMIEs. When prey were allowed to disperse, the TMIEs on resource survival increased to 11-times the DMIEs. We found that restricting the ability of prey to disperse, or focusing on only one predator-avoidance behavior, may be underestimating TMIEs. Our results indicate that the relative contribution of behavior and consumption in food chain dynamics will depend on which predator-avoidance behaviors are allowed to occur and measured.  相似文献

During the late 20th Century, due to decreases in both contamination and persecution, bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) populations increased dramatically. Currently, mechanisms regulating eagle populations are not well understood. To examine potential regulating processes in the Pacific Northwest, where eagles are no longer primarily regulated by contaminants or direct persecution, we examined bald eagle reproductive success, breeding populations, winter populations, mortality, and salmon stream use. Wintering and breeding eagle populations in south-coastal British Columbia (BC) quadrupled between the early 1980s and the late 1990s, and have since stabilized. Density-dependent declines in reproduction occurred during 1986–2009, but not through changes in site quality. Mid-winter survival was crucial as most mortality occurred then, and models showed that density-dependent reductions in population growth rates were partially due to reduced survival. Wintering eagles in British Columbia fed heavily on chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) runs, and then switched to birds in late winter, when mortality was highest. Eagles tended to arrive after the peak in salmon availability at streams in BC as part of a migration associated with salmon streams from Alaska to northern Washington. Eagles were most abundant in southern BC during cold Alaskan winters and in years of high chum salmon availability. We suggest that eagle populations in the Pacific Northwest are currently partially limited by density on the breeding grounds and partially by adult mortality in late winter, likely due to reduced late winter salmon stocks forcing eagles to exploit more marginal prey supplies. Larger eagle populations have affected some local prey populations. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献
