The feather back, Notopterus notopterus is an important food fish. Its ovary is an extremely dynamic organ and the oocytes present an asynchronous development. Variations in ovary weight, GSI, diameter of oocytes were studied in different months of the year in this fish. Different developmental stages of female germ cells were identified on the basis of histological and ultrastructural characteristics in the ovary of N. notopterus (Pallas). In the present investigation the oocyte development of N. notopterus was divided into five stages (oogonia, perinucleolar oocyte, cortical alveolus, yolk granules stage and mature oocyte). The cytophysiological features like vitellogenesis, chorion formation and atresia of some follicles were also studied in the present investigation. The seasonal changes in the ovary have been described according to the variations in gonadosomatic index and the cytological changes of the female germ line cells.  相似文献

Hemibagrus nemurus is a riverine catfish with high economic and nutritive values. Investigations on ovarian development of this fish were carried out to determine the mode of ovarian development and describe the oocyte developmental stages. Histological studies were done on ovaries using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Fish were sampled monthly for a period of six months (August 2009 to January 2010). The mean oocyte diameter (OD) ranged from 871 ± 161.41 μm to 1,167 ± 26.77 μm and the highest OD was in November. Oocyte size-frequency distribution showed a polymodal distribution. The mean gonadosomatic index (GSI) ranged from 1.14 ± 0.87% to 7.06 ± 1.40% and highest GSI was in November. The ovaries exhibited three phases of oocyte growth, which were primary growth, secondary growth and maturation phases. Based on histological criteria, the oocyte developmental stages were divided into seven stages as chromatin nucleolar, early perinucleolar, late perinucleolar, cortical alveolar, vitellogenesis, mature oocyte and germinal vesicle migration stages. All the seven stages of oocyte development were observed in the ovaries. Oogonia were always present throughout the developmental stages. The ovaries had more than two stages of oocyte development. This is the first report on the mode of ovarian development of H. nemurus. These findings indicated that H. nemurus has asynchronous mode of ovarian development and is capable of spawning several times in a year under favourable conditions.  相似文献

Gonad development of the silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus in two volcanic crater  lake  habitats (Sampaloc Lake, Taal Lake) in south Luzon, Philippines was examined during the annual reproductive cycle. The minimum body size‐at‐maturity of fish in these two lake habitats was also compared. Four gonad development stages were characterized as basis for the classification of ovarian (immature, maturing, mature, spawned) and testicular maturation (immature, maturing, mature) phases. The occurrence of all development stages in individual gonads suggest an asynchronous development whereby advanced stages are recruited continuously from a pool of younger stage germ cells to result in elevated female and male GSI throughout the annual cycle due to active gonadogenesis. Together with the increasing occurrence of advanced stage oocytes and spermatozoa from March until October, the elevated GSI of fish may indicate peak gonadal growth during the onset of the dry season (December–January) for eventual spawning from the beginning (May–June) until the end of the wet season (October–November). In both lake habitats, male fish were smaller than females but, regardless of sex, the minimum size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake was significantly smaller than fish in Taal Lake. Overall, asynchronous development during oogenesis and spermatogenesis allows for year‐round reproduction of silver therapon, with elevated gonad growth in the dry season in preparation for spawning during the wet season. Compared with fish in Taal Lake, a smaller size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake may be a response of the wild fishery stock to long‐term high fishing mortality and degradation of the lake habitat.  相似文献

The size, growth and reproductive biology of the giant mudskipper, Periophthalmodon schlosseri, was studied in the inter‐tidal mudflat of a mangrove swamp along a 0.4–0.6 × 5 km stretch of the Sepang coastal waters, Selangor Malaysia. The size ranges of the giant mudskipper specimens caught in the study area were between 10–27.5 cm TL (20.6 ± 3.1 cm) for males and 14.5–28.5 cm TL (21.9 ± 2.3 cm) for females. Male to female sex ratio during the study was 1 : 1.1. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L = 29 cm and K = 1.4 year?1, with a growth performance index of Ø′ = 3.1. Otolith microstructure analysis revealed a strong correlation (Female: r = 0.920, n = 35; Male: r = 0.943, n = 41, P < 0.05) between the number of daily rings (number of days old) over the respective size ranges of male (8.5–19.5 cm SL) and female fish (11.8–22.3 cm SL). Four maturity stages were described to follow gonadal development based on external features; these stages were further validated through histological examination of the ovary and oocyte diameter measurements. The gonadal development cycle of P. schlosseri was asynchronous, as marked by the random mixture of early stages oocytes (diameter: 70.7 ± 14.9 μm) to matured stages (356.9 ± 20.2 μm), and had a prolonged spawning season extending from June to October. Monthly fluctuation of the gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices for this species was highly correlated (r = 0.126, P < 0.05).  相似文献

Wild Seriola dumerilii were collected in the South Mediterranean Sea during the 1990, 1991 and 1992 spawning seasons. Macroscopic and cytological characteristics of ovary and testis were analysed. Depending on the presence and the number of oocytes at different stages, a five point maturity scale was proposed for ovarian maturity. Nine maturity stages of the oocytes are described. Oocyte size-frequency distribution has shown a group synchronous ovarian development type. The testes have a typical lobular-type structure. Depending on lobules and sperm duct development and on the abundance of germ cells, testis maturity was classified in four stages. Maturity rate according to age and size was also determined. 100% of 1-year-old fish show immature gonads. The proportion of females with mature ovaries was 0, 12.5, 84.6 and 100% at the age of 2, 3, 4 and 5 years respectively. The proportion of males with mature testes was 14.3, 40, 80 and 100 at the same age. The median standard length at which 50% of the fish attained maturity is 109 and 113 cm SL in males and females respectively.  相似文献

The life-history of Euclinostomum heterostomum (Rudolphi, 1809), a clinostomid trematode occurring in the oesophagus and buccal cavity of pond heron Ardeola grayii and cattle egret Bubulcus ibis at Visakhapatnam, India, has been traced from egg to adult stage, based on field and laboratory studies. Eggs released by gravid flukes hatched into miracidia in 10 days. The snail Indoplanorbis exustus served as the first intermediate host and the intramolluscan phase, involving the development of two redial generations and cercariae, took two months. Natural infections with the metacercaria were found in the kidneys and liver of the fish Channa punctatus and muscles of C. orientalis. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that more than 2 months are required for the development of the cercaria into the infective metacercarial stage. The morphology of all of the stages in the life-cycle has been studied in detail, as well as the growth characteristics of the metacercaria within the fish host. Two phases in the metacercarial growth were noted, a lag phase followed by an exponential phase. Allometric growth parameters of body proportions and organs of the metacercaria and the adult are compared. The validity of various species included in the genus Euclinostomum is discussed.  相似文献

To analyse a recruitment failure in a roach ( Rutilus rutilus ) population exposed to cooling water from a Swedish nuclear power plant, histopathological examinations were made on female gonads. Several disorders were documented, corresponding to effects previously seen in Lithuanian, Moldavian and Russian heated waters, The relative gonad size (GSI) was generally lower in the exposed population. Oocyte degeneration was observed in about 50% of the females, potentially seriously reducing their reproductive capacity. The gameto- and gonadogeneses also were clearly affected and generally occurred at a faster rate. Sexual maturity was earlier and was accompanied by an increased occurrence of asynchionic gonad and oocyte growth. A normal gonad development should pass through different stages, coupled to the seasons, and the difference between individuals in a population should be small. However, in some exposed fish, the sequence of seasonal development was disturbed and a simultaneous, intensive, growth of sex cells in different stages of development could be seen. An increase of variation in gonad development both within, as well as between, fish thus was documented. Conclusively, the histopathological analysis provided evidence that the observed recruitment deficit could be related to gonad failure.  相似文献

In 'runted' populations of Tilapia zilli positive correlations were found between maturation stages and the following: gonadosomatic index, gonad weight, fish weight and fish length. The minimum size at maturity was 9·0 cm in males and 11·0 cm in females. The mean fecundity in the 'stunted' females was 2359 eggs and it increased with length ( L ) weight (HO and depth ( D ) of the fish. There was, however, no correlation between fecundity and egg size. The results indicated that growth in this 'stunted' T. zilli population was not isometric. The relative condition factor ( Kn ) which approached one indicates good condition.  相似文献

Size of Baltic cod eggs from incubation experiments and from field samples was determined by microscopic analysis. Results from plankton samples were compared with corresponding size distributions of cod eggs found in herring stomachs. The influence of fixation on size of different developmental stages was studied. Live eggs from incubation experiments were also sized repeatedly throughout the developmental period with an optical plankton counter (OPC) based on light attenuance measurements as this was assumed to be more closely related to the visibility of the eggs for potential predators than egg diameter as obtained by microscopic analysis.
Preservation in formaldehyde solution caused a small reduction in egg diameter (2.2%) whereby no differences between the developmental stages were detected. Egg size decreased slightly during incubation (6.9%) while the OPC measurements revealed a substantial increase in light attenuance during egg development (42.2%). In the field, a general decrease in egg size with increasing depth was observed while no change between the developmental stages was detectable. The mean size of eggs ingested by herring was slightly lower than in the water column which was most pronounced for the late stages containing a well-developed embryo. The frequency of eggs in an advanced stage of development was considerably higher in the stomachs than in corresponding plankton samples. Therefore, it is suggested that the selection of further developed egg stages by predatory fish in the central Baltic Sea, i.e. herring and sprat, is due to an increase of visibility during egg development in relation to growth and pigmentation of the embryo. Thus it is likely that egg mortality due to predation is stage-dependent rather than strictly size-selective.  相似文献

This study analyses the ontogenetic diet shifts of a Neotropical catfish, Pimelodus maculatus (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae), from an ecomorphological standpoint. We collected 241 individuals in the Piracicaba River (Brazil) and, in the laboratory, seven morphometric variables were recorded from each specimen: standard length (SL), body depth, head length, snout length, eye diameter, mouth height and mouth width. After standardizing these measurements (as a proportion of SL), linear regressions were run to determine whether their growth was isometric or allometric in relation to SL. The diet analysis shows that the main food item for fish in the smaller size classes is aquatic insects, while the largest individuals feed mainly on other fish. As the great majority of the morphometric variables analyzed showed isometric growth as a function of SL – which means that these fish do not change their shape significantly during their lives – the ontogenetic diet shifts may be seen as a consequence of the absolute size increment of their mouth gape, which allows individuals to maximize their energetic gain by ingesting larger prey with a higher caloric content.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of pond-raised Oreochromis (Nyasalapia) karongae was investigated. Gonad histology and gonadosomatic indices (GSIs) indicated a potential for multiple spawning in a season. Several peaks of oocyte-size distribution and several maturation stages occurred in the same gonad. GSIs of 2.5% and 1.4% were recorded in female and male fish, respectively. Three stages of oocyte maturation (primary growth, formation of yolk vesicles, vitellogenesis) and three stages of sperm development (spermatogonia, spermatid, spermatozoa) were observed. With the exception of the final maturation stage, all development phases seemed to proceed satisfactorily. The final stage of maturation was attained at oocyte size of 2.70 ± 0.54 mm and was selectively impaired in some female fish by a lack of deposition of vitellogenin. This abnormal condition led to atrophic oocytes lacking yolk granules and vesicles. Sexual maturation was attained at a relatively large size of 16.0 cm (114 g) compared with other tilapia of the mossambicoid group (i.e. Oreochromis mossambicus and Oreochromis shiranus ). A combination of gravimetric and histological techniques was successful in charting gonad changes and calibrating external against internal gonad features.  相似文献

The heart urchin Abatus cavernosus shows sexual dimorphism characterized by the development of external brood pouches and the enlargement of gonopores in brooding females. Relationships between body size, gonopore size, and gonadal maturation in each sex were examined for inflection points using piecewise regression models (PRM). Opening of the gonopore occurred at 15.5 mm test length. Inflection points in the gonadal growth and gonopore diameter trajectories were clustered at smaller sizes in males (23 and 24.2 mm, respectively) than in females (25.1 and 25.9 mm), indicating sex‐specific differences in sexual maturation. Gonopore growth showed positive allometry at pre‐adult stages of development in both sexes, but isometry and negative allometry in adult females and males, respectively. Gonadal growth was initiated at smaller sizes and proceeded at a higher rate with increasing body size in males than in females. Identification of inflection points in gonopore and gonadal growth trajectories, using objective PRM, allows the determination of life stages and sexual maturation for individuals, thus providing a complementary tool for population studies.  相似文献

This paper examines the effect of lake characteristics on population density and how this variation affects growth, mortality and population size structure of brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis. The study was conducted on 17 recreationally fished, reproductively isolated boreal forest lakes in Newfoundland, Canada from 1993 to 2000. A standardized sampling program, the Fyke Littoral Index Netting program (FLIN) was used to collected data that describes brook trout population parameters and life history attributes. Regression analyses showed significant relationships between fish density and biomass and characteristics of the lakes. Variation in fish density and biomass was explained by lake surface area and littoral habitat area. Significant relationships were found when growth, mortality and size structure were regressed against density. The proportional stock distribution and theoretical maximum size of brook trout were negatively related to density, and natural mortality was positively related to density. The largest maximum length and highest proportional stock densities occurred at brook trout densities of less than 30 fish/ha. In general, the higher the proportion of littoral habitat area the higher the densities of brook trout, which correspondingly had important effects on growth, natural mortality and size structure of the brook trout populations. This information is critical to the development of management strategies aimed at altering size distribution to produce specific fisheries management outcomes.  相似文献

Sphaerospora epinepheli n. sp. is described from grouper, Epinephelus malabaricus, in cage-cultured and wild fish collected from both coastal lines of southern Thailand. Subspherical to spherical spores and mono- or disporous pseudoplasmodia were observed in the lumen of kidney tubules. Pseudoplasmodia were round to elongate, size range 15.6-22.9 microns (length) x 8.4-21.6 microns (width). Spores were 7.8-10.0 microns (length) x 12.3-14.5 microns (thickness), and 7.0-9.5 microns (width) with two spherical polar capsules of equal size measuring 2.9-4.4 microns in diameter and containing polar filaments with six or seven windings. Two uninucleate sporoplasms showed iodine vacuoles. Blood stages, similar to C-blood protozoans observed from freshwater fish in Europe, were found from peripheral blood smears of grouper. Ultrastructural studies of blood stages showed a similar structure to unidentified mobile protozoans from the blood of carp. Electron dense bodies were observed in the cytoplasm of the primary cell blood stages. Infected proximal-tubular epithelial cells showed highly vacuolated cytoplasm and pycnotic nuclei.  相似文献

Age, growth and reproduction of the R. lemmingii population of the River Huebra, Duero basin are analysed. Females dominated older age classes and lived up to 6 years (5+) while males only reached 5 years (4+). The growing season extended from April to September; growth rates were similar for both sexes. 0+ fish condition increased during their first summer and spring. In older fish, condition cycle was related to gonad development and showed some differences between sexes. The number of females reaching maturity at age 1 + almost doubled that of males; females also matured at smaller size. Both fecundity and egg size increased with female length: mean egg counts varied between 974 for 1 + individuals and an estimated 10491 for 5+ fish. Eggs were produced as a single batch, but were released fractionally during April and May.  相似文献

The growth dynamics of red, pink and white fibres of the caudal and pectoral fin muscles are described in Carans malabaricus (Cuv. & Val.) in relation to their somatic growth. In all three fibre types growth occurred by an increase in fibre number and diameter in small size classes of fish and by an increase in diameter only in larger fish. The growth dynamics of the three fibre types were similar to those of the myotomal muscle fibres and paralleled the somatic growth pattern of this fish.  相似文献

Summary

Embryo morphometry and developing time from just-laid eggs until hatching were described in the palaemonid prawn, Macrobrachium borellii, using a rapid non-invasive staging method. Embryos were kept in the laboratory under controlled conditions and development divided into seven stages according to major morphological characteristics. This lecithotrophic, freshwater shrimp has a highly abbreviated type of hatching development after 39 ± 2 days as postlarvae at 24°C. Morphometry was recorded using a stereoscopic microscope with an image analyzer. Area, perimeter, maximum and minimum diameters and shape were measured in yolk sac, egg-coat and eye, respectively, and they were statistically selected as the best to define the stages. Eggs are ovoid with a maximum diameter that varies from the moment of oviposition to the time of hatching from 1.5 to 2.0 mm, respectively. Water content and egg size increase along with development, whereas egg shape only varies just before hatching when the egg becomes strongly ovoid. Egg coat and eye variables significantly increase as the embryo develops while all yolk variables decrease as the embryo consumes the vitellus. Yolk represents more than 95% of the egg at the time of oviposition, falling to 22% by the time of hatching. The major yolk area decrease is observed between stages 4 and 5, which is coincident with a marked increase in the catabolism. Using only egg coat, yolk and eye shape and maximum diameter, a researcher can straightforwardly identify a developing stage with an accuracy ranging from 70 to 100%. This tool may be employed in other species provided they have transparent chorion.  相似文献

Two groups of anadromous Arctic charr ( Salvelinus alpinus ) (size 200–350 mm) reared in heated water (6–12° C) under simulated natural photoperiod were individually tagged and released in spring 1988. The fish were released at two sites, in the estuary of the River Halselva and in the fjord, 2 km from the river mouth. Growth, timing of migration and survival of these hatchery-reared fish was compared to that of wild anadromous charr of the same size over a 4-year period. The hatchery-reared charr had poorer growth than the wild fish during their first year in sea water. They also resided longer in the sea and had a slightly lower survival than wild fish. During the second year, hatchery-reared charr displayed good growth, and after the third sea-season the fish were ready for slaughter at a size of approximately 800g. The results suggest that the successful development of Arctic charr ranching will be dependent upon production and release strategies that lead to improved migratory and feeding behaviour of the fish during their first season at sea.  相似文献
