Aphidiid parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) of aphids generally exploit only a small percentage of the available host resources in the field. This limited impact on aphid populations has often been explained as a consequence of hyperparasitism. We propose that a wasp's reproductive strategy, as opposed to hyperparasitism, is the dominant factor in aphidiid population dynamics. A wasp's foraging efficiency and oviposition decisions are influenced by several variables, including searching behaviour between and within patches, host choice (as modified by the aphids' defensive behaviours), and plant structural complexity. Two broadly different patterns of host exploitation have evolved in aphidiid wasps in relation to ant-aphid mutualism. Firstly, in species that are exposed to predation and hyperparasitism, a female may leave a patch before all suitable hosts are parasitized. Because predators and hyperparasitoids tend to aggregate at high aphid or aphidiid densities, or in response to aphid honeydew, this strategy enables females to reduce offspring mortality by spreading the risk over several host patches. Secondly, in species that have evolved mechanisms to avoid aggression by mutualistic ants, females are able to exploit a hyperparasitoid-free resource space. Such species may concentrate their eggs in only a few aphid colonies, which are thus heavily exploited. Although hyperparasitism of species in the first group tends to reach high levels, its overall impact on aphid-aphidiid population dynamics is probably limited by the low average fecundity of most hyperparasitoids. We discuss the foraging patterns of aphidiid wasps in relation to aphid population regulation in general, and to classical biological control in particular. We argue that a parasitoid's potential to regulate the host population is largely determined by its foraging strategy. In an exotic parasitoid, a behavioural syndrome that has evolved and presumably is adaptive in a more diverse (native) environment may, in a more uniform (managed) environment, result in suboptimal patch-leaving and oviposition decisions, and possibly increased resource usage.  相似文献

Summary The nature and relative strengths of intra versus interspecific interactions among foraging ladybeetle larvae were studied experimentally by measuring short-term growth rates of predators and reductions in population sizes of prey in laboratory microcosms. In these microcosms, ladybeetle larvae foraged singly or as conspecific or heterospecific pairs, for pea aphids on bean plants over a two-day period. Similarly sized third instar larvae ofHippodamia convergens andH. tredecimpunctata, H. convergens andH. sinuata, andH. convergens andCoccinella septempunctata, were tested in experiments designed to ensure that paired larvae experienced moderate competition. Interspecific competition in these experiments did not differ significantly from intraspecific competition, in that an individual's weight gain did not depend on whether its competitor was heterospecific or conspecific. Furthermore, aphid populations were reduced equally by heterospecific and conspecific pairs. These results suggest that there is little or no difference between intra and interspecific interactions among larvae of these ladybeetles when two similarly sized individuals co-occur on a host plant. Thus, the species diversityper se of assemblages of ladybeetle larvae may have little influence over the short term on the reduction of aphid populations by ladybeetle predation.  相似文献

Refuge use provides a good model for the study of trade-offs between the benefits of predator avoidance and the costs of lost feeding opportunities. We manipulated the latter costs by subjecting similar-sized three-spine sticklebacks to 2 days of food deprivation followed by a 2-day re-feeding period and recorded associated changes in body weight and refuge use. Food deprivation resulted in a decrease and re-feeding in an increase in the duration of refuge use by fish. Emergence times of fish from the refuge were extremely variable (with a ratio of 1:127 between the shortest and the longest ones) but individual ranks were highly consistent between different days of testing, suggesting that emergence times were individually characteristic. Percentage weight change of fish in response to the experimental treatments also showed a high level of inter-individual variation ranging from 0–17%. A significant positive correlation was found between the percentage weight lost and the percentage decrease in emergence time from a refuge after food deprivation and similarly between the percentage weight gained and the percentage increase in refuge use after re-feeding. The importance of scale of patchiness for selectivity in grazing herbivores   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
The notion that spatial scale is an important determinant of foraging selectivity and habitat utilization has only recently been recognized. We predicted and tested the effects of scale of patchiness on movements and selectivity of a large grazer in a controlled field experiment. We created random mosaics of short/high-quality and tall/low-quality grass patches in equal proportion at grid sizes of 2×2 m and 5×5 m. Subsequently, we monitored the foraging behaviour of four steers in 16 20×40 m plots over 30-min periods. As predicted on the basis of nutrient intake maximization, the animals selected the short patches, both by walking in a non-random manner and by additional selectivity for feeding stations. The tortuosity of foraging paths was similar at both scales of patchiness but selectivity was more pronounced in large patches than in small ones. In contrast, the number of bites per feeding station was not affected by patch size, suggesting that selection between and within feeding stations are essentially different processes. Mean residence time at individual feeding stations could not be successfully predicted on the basis of the marginal-value theorem: the animals stayed longer than expected, especially in the less profitable patch type. The distribution of the number of bites per feeding station suggests a constant probability to stay to feed or to move on to the next feeding station. This implies that the animals do not treat larger patches as discrete feeding stations but rather as a continuous resource. Our results have important implications for the application of optimal foraging theory in patchy environments. We conclude that selectivity in grazers is facilitated by large-scale heterogeneity, particularly by enhancing discrimination between feeding stations and larger selection units. Dispersions and resource utilization of primary and secondary parasitoids developing in non-depletable primary host populations were determined for an aphid-parasitoid community occurring on strawberries. Analyses of dispersions based onGreen 's coefficient andLloyd 's Patchiness Index indicated parasitized aphids were highly aggregated initially, became less aggregated as density increased, and remained aggregated following collapse of the aphid populations. The “index of aggregation” values calculated usingTaylor 's Power Law concurred with results from the other indices, and the similarity of the regression coefficients from both seasons suggests that the index of aggregation may be characteristic for communities as well as species. Analysis withIwao 's regression of mean crowding on the mean generated similar results when population data were stratified temporally, and also indicated that the individual was the basic unit of the population. In a non-depletable environment, oviposition of individuals exhibiting an aggregated dispersion pattern within clumps of hosts provides primary parasitoids with a suitable trade-off between energy utilization or genetic potential, and losses associated with hyperparasitism.  相似文献

Competition between larvae of two anuran species (Bufo bufo and B. calamita) was investigated under field conditions likely to disfavour cell-mediated interference mechanisms. The experiment used triplicated cage treatments in an unshaded farm pond, a poor habitat for the unicellular pathogen Anurofeca richardsi implicated in interference competition between these anurans in sand dune ponds. The farm pond experienced lower maximum temperatures than a nearby dune pond but sustained larger numbers of eukaryotic algae and therefore had higher primary productivity. Survival and growth of B. calamita larvae were inversely related to density in all treatments but interspecific effects were much more severe than intraspecific ones. There was no evidence of A. richardsi in any treatment and competition between the Bufo larvae was therefore intense in the absence of Anurofeca-mediated interference effects. Anuran larvae reduced the standing crop and altered the community composition of algae in the treatment cages but larval growth rates were not simply related to food availability. Algal cell numbers in larval guts, a measure of food acquisition, were however inversely related to tadpole density in both species. Feeding niche overlap was high but decreased as larval density increased. Resource competition was implicated as the most probable major mechanism. Spatial memory and foraging competition were investigated in three mother/offspring pairs of western lowland gorillas,Gorilla gorilla gorilla, using a naturalistic foraging task at the Toronto Zoo. Sixteen permanent food sites were placed throughout the animals’ enclosures. All of the sites were baited and a pair of animals was free to visit the sites and collect the food. Five of the subjects collected the food with accuracy better than chance. Most of the subjects visited the sites using a pattern, and for half the subjects this was one of adjacency. The high accuracy of five of the subjects and the lack of a consistent adjacency pattern suggest that the animals did in fact use spatial memory. Furthermore, the gorillas tended to avoid visiting food sites that had been previously depleted by their partner. They also appeared to split their search of the enclosures, each visiting only a proportion of the food sites. This indicated that the animals were competing and altering their foraging behaviour based on the behaviour of their partner. Therefore, accuracy was recalculated to take this into account. When the sites depleted by either animal in a pair during a given trial were worked into the accuracy calculations for individual animals, three of the animals still maintained accuracy above chance. This suggests that the animals were not only able to remember which sites they had depleted, but those sites depleted by their foraging partner as well.  相似文献

Cryothecomonas longipes Schnepf and Kühn sp. nov. is a colourless biflagellate organism, 9–14 μm long and 7–9 μm wide when not filled with food vacuoles. It was detected in the North Sea, feeding with pseudopodia on diatoms. It penetrates the host shell, while the main body of the flagellate remains outside the frustule. Cells are covered with a multilayered theca. The pseudopodium protrudes through a preformed slit in the theca. Each flagellum also emerges through a pit in which the theca forms a funnel of complex structure that girdles each flagellum. The anterior flagellum is 9–15 μm long and oriented forward; the ventral flagellum, posteriorly directed, is 20–24 μm long and bears fine hairs. The flagellar roots consist of microtubules that emerge at satellites around the basal bodies and run along the flagellar pits. In addition, the ventral flagellum is accompanied by a band of six microtubules. It is proximally attached to a small fibrillar band, which interconnects the basal bodies. Cryothecomonas longipes has two or three types of extrusomes which pierce the theca when discharged. Their mode of discharge is discussed. Microbody-like vesicles containing small tubules are closely associated with older digestion vacuoles. Cryothecomonas longipes is compared with other species of the genus and a diagnosis is given. Genetic variation in protoplast-derived rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants was characterized using first and second generation selfed progenies. A total of 133 regenerated plants were obtained from ten protoplasts of the japonica rice cultivar Nipponbare. Sixty two regenerated plants which set enough seeds for the subsequent field tests at the next generation and were derived from five protoplasts were selected, and their selfed seeds were used as the first selfed-seed progeny generation). Fifteen plants were selected from each of the 15 lines, and their selfed seeds were used for tests at the generation. Thirty seven lines (60%) segregated plants with detrimental mutant characters of yellow-green phenotype, dwarf stature, dense and short panicle, or low seed fertility. According to the segregation patterns in the lines having mutated plants among those originated from the same protoplasts, the stages of mutation induction were estimated. Additionally, five quantitative traits were changed in almost all and lines. Varied quantitative traits of heading date, number of spikelets per panicle, and seed fertility, were in a heterozygous state. However, culm and panicle lengths showed high uniformity, whereas reduced culm and panicle lengths were caused by mutational changes in polygenes and/or multiple genes. A method based upon targetting of intro-gressed markers in a Phomopsis-resistant line (R) of cultivated sunflower, issuing from a H. argophyllus cross was used to mark the Phomopsis resistance regions. Our study was based upon 203 families derived from a cross between an inbred line susceptible to Phomopsis (S1) and the introgressed resistant line (R). Families were checked for Phomopsis resistance level in a design with replicated plots and natural infection was re-inforced by pieces of contaminated stems. Thirty four primers were employed for RAPD analysis. Out of 102 polymorphic fragments between (S1) and H. argophyllus, seven were still present in (R) suggesting that they marked introgressions of H. argophyllus into (R). The plants were scored for the presence or absence of 19 fragments obtained from five primers, and the relationships between the presence/absence of fragments in plants and Phomopsis resistance/susceptiblity in the progenies was determined by using an analysis of variance. We found that at least two introgressed regions, as well as favourable factors from sunflower, contributed to the level of Phomopsis resistance in cultivated sunflower. The role of vision and color in close-proximity foraging behavior was investigated for four species of lady beetles: Coccinella septempunctata, Hippodamia convergens, Harmonia axyridis, and Coleomegilla maculata. The effect of light level and color cues on consumption rates varied among the four predator species. The consumption rates of these predators on the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) was measured under light and dark conditions. C. septempunctata,H. convergens, and Ha. axyridis consumed significantly more aphids in the light than in the dark, while the consumption rate of Col. maculata was not affected by light level. Foraging ability was also measured on red and green color morphs of the pea aphid on red, green, and white backgrounds. C. septempunctata consumed significantly more of the aphid morph that contrasted with the background color, and showed no difference between morphs on the white background. H. axyridis consumed significantly more red morph aphids regardless of background. The remaining two species showed no difference in consumption rates on the two color morphs. The variation in the use of visual cues demonstrates how different species of predators can exhibit different foraging behaviors when searching for the same prey. Populations of plants and animals are almost always made up of individuals of different sizes. In populations where cannibalism is common, this size variation can influence rates of mortality and growth and affect population regulation. Size variation can be caused by a variety of mechanisms. One of these is due to size-specific responses to the threat of predation by potentially cannibalistic conspecifics. We investigated the role of anti-predator behavior in size structure development within single-aged cohorts of Arizona tiger salamander larvae. In a laboratory experiment, we show that size variation increases over time within groups of salamanders, even if they are fed in isolation. We also show that increasing the size of neighbors decreases the feeding rate of small salamander larvae. However, increasing density of neighbors did not have a significant effect on feeding rate. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that size variation among tiger salamander larvae is, in part, a result of size-specific responses to predation risk. Gliadin polymorphism in wild and cultivated einkorn wheats   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
To study the relationships between different species of the Einkorn group, 408 accessions of Triticum monococcum, T. boeoticum, T. boeoticum ssp. thauodar and T. urartu were analyzed electrophoretically for their protein composition at the Gli-1 and Gli-2 loci. In all the species the range of allelic variation at the loci examined is remarkable. The gliadin patterns of T. monococcum and T. boeoticum were very similar to one another but differed substantially from those of T. urartu. Several accessions of T. boeoticum and T. monococcum were shown to share the same alleles at the Gli-1 and Gli-2 loci, confirming the recent nomenclature that considers these wheats as different subspecies of the same species, T. monococcum. The gliadin composition of T. urartu resembled that of the A genome of polyploid wheats more than did T. boeoticum or T. monococcum, supporting the hypothesis that T. urartu, rather than T. boeoticum, is the donor of the A genome in cultivated wheats. Because of their high degree of polymorphism the gliadin markers may help in selecting breeding parents from diploid wheat germ plasm collections and can be used both to search for valuable genes linked to the gliadin-coding loci and to monitor the transfer of alien genes into cultivated polyploid wheats. The mapping of phytochrome genes and photomorphogenic mutants of tomato   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
The map positions of five previously described phytochrome genes have been determined in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) The position of the yg-2 gene on chromosome 12 has been confirmed and the classical map revised. The position of the phytochrome A (phy A)-deficient fri mutants has been refined by revising the classical map of chromosome 10. The position of the PhyA gene is indistinguishable from that of the fri locus. The putative phyB1-deficient tri mutants were mapped by classical and RFLP analysis to chromosome 1. The PhyB1 gene, as predicted, was located at the same position. Several mutants with the high pigment (hp) phenotype, which exaggerates phytochrome responses, have been reported. Allelism tests confirmed that the hp-2 mutant is not allelic to other previously described hp (proposed here to be called hp-1) mutants and a second stronger hp-2 allele (hp-2 j ) was identified. Vagrant non-breeding ravens frequently attract conspecifics to rich ephemeral food sources. There, grouping may allow them to overcome the defence of territorial breeders. Here, we focus on ravens making use of regular food supplies in a game park, where they divert food from the provision of park animals. We investigated if ravens foraging in the Cumberland game park (Grünau, Austria) are attentive towards one another when they experience some unpredictability in food provisioning. We confronted a group of 30–50 ravens with two different treatments. Ten minutes ahead of the feeding of either wolves or wild boars we showed buckets containing pieces of meat to the ravens flying overhead. In the reliable cue treatment (RCT), the meat was placed next to one of the two enclosures, whereas in the unreliable cue treatment (UCT), the buckets were placed simultaneously in front of both enclosures though only in one of the enclosures were the animals fed 10 min later. Thus, during RCT but not during UCT, ravens could predict where food would become available. Only during UCT, ravens moved in large groups between the two feeding sites. Many ravens moving at the same time in the same direction may indicate some co-ordination in space and time, which is most likely achieved by social attraction among individuals. Furthermore, the number of ravens approaching and leaving, respectively, a feeding site cross-correlated with a temporary increase in the rate of a food-associated call, the yell. This suggests that in addition to watching each other, calling may have contributed to group formation. Possible benefits of group formation during food inspection are discussed.  When foraging for nectar many insects exhibit flower constancy (a preference for flower species which they have previously visited) and frequently ignore rewarding flowers of other species. Darwin proposed the favoured explanation for this behaviour, hypothesizing that learning of handling skills for one flower species interferes with the ability to recall handling skills for previously learned species. A crucial element of this hypothesis is that savings in handling time resulting from constancy must exceed increases in travelling time necessitated by ignoring other suitable species. A convincing quantification of this trade-off has not been achieved and tests to date on bumblebees indicate that savings in handling time are too small to offset an increase in travelling time. To assess further the validity of Darwin’s hypothesis, handling and flight times of the butterfly, Thymelicus flavus, were measured under natural conditions, and the abundance and reward provided by the available flower species quantified to enable estimation of foraging efficiency. Butterflies exhibited a mean increase in handling time of 0.85 s per flower associated with switching between flower species, although the magnitude of this difference varied greatly among flower species. Switching was not associated with a decrease in travelling time, contrary to expectation. Switching was more frequent following a lower than average reward from the last flower visited. In butterflies, flights serve functions other than movement between nectar sources, such as mate location (unlike worker bees). Hence constancy may be a viable strategy to reduce time spent in handling flowers and increase time available for other activities. Although savings in handling time may be small, Darwin’s interference hypothesis remains a valid explanation for flower constancy in foraging butterflies. A rapidly growing, long-term suspension culture derived from Triticum aestivum L. (wheat) was synchronized using hydroxyurea and colchicine, and a chromosome suspension with chromosomes was made. After staining with the DNA-specific fluorochromes Hoechst 33258 and Chromomycin univariate and bivariate flow-cytometry histograms showed 15 clearly resolved peaks corresponding to individual chromosome types or groups of chromosomes with similar DNA contents. The flow karyotype was closely similar to a histogram of DNA content measurements of Feulgen-stained chromosomes made by microdensitometry. We were able to show the stability of the flow karyotype of the cell line over a year, while a parallel subculture had a slightly different, stable, karyotype following different growth conditions. The data indicate that flow cytometric analysis of plant karyotypes enables accurate, statistically precise chromosome classification and karyotyping of cereals. There was little overlap between individual flow-histogram peaks, so the method is useful for flow sorting and the construction of chromosome specific-recombinant DNA libraries. Using bivariate analysis, the AT:GC ratio of all the chromosomes was remarkably similar, in striking contrast to mammalian flow karyotypes. We speculate about a fundamental difference in organization and homogenization of DNA sequences between chromosomes within mammalian and plant genomes.  General dynamic models of systems with two prey and one or two predators are considered. After rescaling the equations so that both prey have the same intrinsic rate of growth, it is shown that there exists a generalist predator that can mediate permanence if and only if there is a population density of a prey at which its per-capita growth rate is positive yet less than its competitor’s invasion rate. In particular, this result implies that if the outcome of competition between the prey is independent of initial conditions, then there exists a generalist predator that mediates permanence. On the other hand, if the outcome of competition is contingent upon initial conditions (i.e., the prey are bistable), then there may not exist a suitable generalist predator. For example, bistable prey modeled by the Ayala–Gilpin (θ-Logistic) equations can be stabilized if and only if θ<1 for one of the prey. It is also shown that two specialist predators always can mediate permanence between bistable prey by creating a repelling heteroclinic cycle consisting of fixed points and limit cycles. A comparison betweeen the electropherograms of the spelt and wheat cultivars showed specific differences in the gliadin band patterns which provided the possibility of a clear classification into spelt or wheat. A special nomenclature was developed to be able to improve the presentation of the gliadin band pattern of spelt, which is different from that of wheat. This nomenclature, however, has not yet been applied to other cereals. The gliadin band patterns were presented in a schematic form. As a parameter for comparison, idealized band patterns of both wheat and spelt were developed by comparing the proportions of the bands of all available types. When comparing the gliadin band patterns of the spelt cross-breeds with their corresponding parental generations, it was noted that the same parental bands were not always transmitted and that the cross-breeds showed differences in the intensity, mobility, occurrence, and the splitting of single bands. In general it can be said that the band pattern of the daughter generation – even in the examined and generations – is more similar to the band pattern of the mother than to that of the father, which proves a maternal effect. Microsatellites consisting of AT repeats are highly polymorphic in rice genomes and can be used to distinguish between even closely related japonica cultivars in Japan. Polymorphisms of 20 microsatellite loci were determined using 59 japonica cultivars, including both domestic and modern Japanese cultivars. Although the polymorphisms of these 20 microsatellite loci indicated that the Japanese cultivars were genetically quite similar, microsatellites consisting of AT repeats showed high gene diversity even among such closely related cultivars. Combinations of these hypervariable microsatellites can be employed to classify individual cultivars, since the microsatellites were stable within each cultivar. An identification system based on these highly polymorphic microsatellites could be used to maintain the purity of rice seeds by eliminating contamination. A parentage diagnosis using 17 polymorphic microsatellite loci clearly demonstrated that plants which carried desired chromosome regions had been selected in breeding programs. Thus, these hypervariable microsatellites consisting of AT repeats should promote the selection of plants which carry desired chromosomes from genetically similar parents. Backcrossing could also help to eliminate unnecessary chromosome regions with microsatellite polymorphisms at an early stage in breeding programs.
