Two hundred and eighteen cross-bred pigs (Duroc × Hampshire × Landrace × Yorkshire) were assigned to a 3 × 2 factorial experiment; the factors being composition of the group and density. The composition of the group factor consisted of pigs not reaggregated (NR), re-aggregated below the median body weight (RBMW), and re-aggregated above the median body weight (RAMW) at the time of transfer to the finishing pens. The density factor consisted of groups of 6 or 12 pigs/pen. Two trials with 2 replications of each trial were conducted. Twenty-six gilts from Trial I were used to determine their age and ovulation rate at the pubertal oestrus. During the nursery phase, composition of the group had no effect (P>0.05) on average daily feed intake (ADFI) or feed efficiency (F/G). Pigs in the NR and RAMW groups had a similar (P>0.05) average daily gain (ADG), whereas, those pigs in the RBMW group gained (P<0.05) at a slower rate. Pigs housed in groups of 6 had a higher (P<0.05) ADFI, had similar (P>0.05) ADG and poorer (P<0.05) F/G than those housed in groups of 12. During the finishing phase, composition of the group had no effect (P>0.05) on ADFI, ADG or F/G. Pigs housed in groups of 6 had a greater (P<0.05) ADFI and ADG, but similar (P<0.05) F/G compared to those housed in groups of 12. Correlation coefficients between the various behaviours and the performance variables suggested that the more active pens of pigs gained less per day and were less efficient. Gilts housed in the NR groups of 6 were younger (P<0.05) at puberty than gilts in the other groups of 6 or 12. Also, gilts housed in the RBMW groups of 6 were younger (P<0.05) at puberty than those housed in the RAMW groups of 6, whereas those housed in the RBMW groups of 12 were older (P<0.05) at puberty than those housed in the RAMW groups of 12. Ovulation rate was not affected (P>0.05) by composition of the group, density or their interaction. In summary, composition and density of the group affected the performance of pigs and was correlated to some of the behavioural measurements. The most noticeable effect was that these same factors caused a delay in the onset of puberty in gilts.  相似文献

A total of 48 Duroc × (Large White × Landrace) gilts of 46.8 kg BW (86 ± 3 days of age) were used to investigate the effect of diet during the growing and finishing periods on growth performance and carcass, meat and fat quality. The control diet consisted of a commercial feedstuff and the granulated barley diet had that cereal as the single major ingredient. There were three treatments: (i) control diet provided from 45.6 to 127.8 kg BW (C group), (ii) control diet from 47.0 to 91.8 kg BW and granulated barley from 91.8 to 129.7 kg BW (C + GB group) and (iii) granulated barley from 47.9 to 93.1 kg BW and control diet from 93.1 to 135.1 kg BW (GB + C group). Each treatment was replicated eight times, with two pigs per replicate. The C group grew faster (P < 0.001) and had a better feed conversion ratio (P < 0.001) than the GB + C group, with C + GB being intermediate. Carcasses from C + GB gilts had higher backfat depth than those from C gilts, with GB + C being intermediate (P < 0.05). Also, the main joints (ham + shoulder + loin) had a higher (P < 0.01) yield in carcass in the GB + C group than in the C group, with C + GB being intermediate. The intramuscular fat (IMF) content was higher (P < 0.001) in loin from C + GB and GB + C gilts than in C gilts. The IMF of loin from C + GB gilts had higher (P < 0.05) C18:1n-9 and total monounsaturated fatty acid (FA) proportions than that from C gilts, whereas the C18:2n-6 and total polyunsaturated FA percentages were lower (P < 0.05) in C + GB gilts than in the remaining gilts. The total saturated FA percentage was lower (P < 0.05) in loin from GB + C than in that from C gilts. Hams from C + GB and GB + C gilts had higher (P < 0.05) C18:1n-9 and total monounsaturated FA proportions and lower C18:2n-6 and total polyunsaturated FA contents than those from C gilts. We can conclude that granulated barley provided during the growing or the finishing period improved some carcass and meat characteristics of heavy gilts desirable for dry-cured ham production.  相似文献

The expected increase in boar (pig entire male) production while societal concerns for castration increase requires good estimations of their nutrient requirements. In this work, a meta-analytical approach was used to overcome the inconsistent results between studies that compared lysine requirements of boars and gilts. For this meta-analysis, data from 14 different studies analysing the effect of increasing dietary lysine on growth performance of finishing pigs, 70–100 kg average body weight, were extracted from 11 publications. Those studies represented 128 different treatments (53 for boars and 75 for gilts). Diets were reformulated based on NRC (2012) ingredient values to calculate standardized ileal digestible lysine to net energy ratio (SID Lys:NE) and daily SID Lys intake using average daily feed intake (ADFI). As expected, no evidence for differences in ADFI (P = 0.303) was observed between boars and gilts. However, boars grew faster (P < 0.001) and had higher gain to feed (G:F; P < 0.001). The divergent effect of SID Lys:NE on average daily gain (ADG) and G:F was analysed in a quadratic polynomial model showing different parameters for each sex (P < 0.001). Although performance between sexes was similar at low SID Lys:NE, differences were greater at higher SID Lys:NE. Furthermore, broken-line linear, broken-line quadratic (BLQ) and quadratic polynomial (QP) models were fitted to each sex to determine SID Lys:NE and SID Lys daily intake requirements to maximize ADG and G:F. Overall, QP models showed the best fit, and reported that to reach maximum ADG 0.88 (95% CI:[0.82–0.94]) or 1.01 (95% CI:[0.91–1.11]) g SID Lys/MJ, NE was required for gilts and boars, respectively. However, boar ADG was best fitted by BLQ using SID Lys daily intake as independent variable, with the requirement for maximum ADG at 24.2 (95% CI:[21.3–27.2]) g SID Lys/day. The three models reported wide confidence intervals for the requirements at maximum performance, and consequently those were overlapped when comparing boars and gilts. Maximum boars’ productive performance when dietary lysine was not limiting was 116% of gilts, and at those levels the amount of SID Lys intake required per kg gain was similar between both sexes. Thus, because ADFI and Lys efficiency of gain was similar, the requirement differences were driven by the increased growth rate and gain to feed ratio between boars and gilts. In conclusion, the present study confirmed a greater productive response of boars compared to gilts when increasing dietary lysine.  相似文献

A study was designed to advance the time of the ovulatory luteinizing hormone (LH) surge in Meishan gilts by human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) administration at the onset of oestrus and assess the effect on embryo survival and development. Twelve Meishan gilts were observed six times daily for oestrous behaviour and bred at 24, 36 and 48 h after observed oestrous onset. Six of those gilts were administered an ovulatory dose of hCG (500 IU) at observed oestrous onset. Blood samples were collected at oestrous onset (Day —2) and on Days 0, 2, 6, 9, 13, 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30 of gestation. All gilts were slaughtered on Day 30 of gestation and embryo survival and conceptus development assessed. Ovulation rate did not differ between control and hCG treated gilts (18.5 and 17.7 respectively; P>0.1) while the number of live conceptuses per gilt (17.2 and 12.8 respectively; P<0.08) and embryo survival rate (92.1 and 75.8% respectively; P<0.1) both tended to be reduced by the hCG treatment. Placental weight (17.2 and 23.1 g; P<0.01) was significantly increased in hCG treated gilts, while embryo weight (1.2 and 1.4 g; P<0.06) and placental length (42.8 and 47.2 cm; P<0.07) both tended to be increased in hCG treated gilts. Crown rump length (P>0.1) and allantoic fluid volume (P>0.1) did not differ between the treatment groups. Serum progesterone concentrations did not differ with treatment overall (P>0.1) but were significantly elevated (P< 0.05) at 48 h postoestrus in the hCG treated gilts compared to control gilts. Overall, these results indicate that advancing the time of the LH surge to oestrous onset, as in European breeds, compromised embryo survival and suggests that the longer time interval between oestrous onset and ovulation is important for the high rate of embryo survival in the Meishan pig.  相似文献

Optimizing phosphorus (P) utilization in pigs requires improving our capacity to predict the amount of P absorbed and retained, with the main modulating factors taken into account, as well as precisely determining the P requirements of the animals. Given the large amount of published data on P utilization in pigs, a meta-analysis was performed to quantify the impact of the different dietary P forms, calcium (Ca) and exogenous phytases on the digestive and metabolic utilization criteria for dietary P in growing pigs. Accordingly, the amount of phytate P (PP) leading to digestible P (g/kg) was estimated to be 21%, compared with 73% for non-phytate P (NPP) from plant ingredients and 80% for NPP from mineral and animal ingredients (P < 0.001). The increase in total digestible dietary P following the addition of microbial phytase (PhytM) from Aspergillus niger (P < 0.001) was curvilinear and about two times higher than the increase following the addition of plant phytase, which leads to a linear response (P < 0.001). The response of digestible P to PhytM also depends on the amount of substrate, PP (PhytM2 × PP, P < 0.001). The digestibility of dietary P decreased with dietary Ca concentration (P < 0.01) independently of phytase but increased with body weight (BW, P < 0.05). Although total digestible dietary P increased linearly with total NPP concentration (P < 0.001), retained P (g/kg), average daily gain (ADG, g/day) and average daily feed intake (ADFI, g/day) increased curvilinearly (P < 0.001). Interestingly, whereas dietary Ca negatively affected P digestibility, the effect of dietary Ca on retained P, ADG and ADFI depended on total dietary NPP (NPP × Ca, P < 0.01, P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively). Increasing dietary Ca reduced retained P, ADG and ADFI at low NPP levels, but at higher NPP concentrations it had no effect on ADG and ADFI despite a positive effect on retained P. Although the curvilinear effect of PhytM on digestible P increased with PP (P < 0.001), this effect was lessened by total NPP for ADG and ADFI (PhytM × NPP and PhytM2 × NPP, P < 0.05) and depended on both total NPP and Ca for retained P (PhytM2 × NPP × Ca, P < 0.01). This meta-analysis improves our understanding of P utilization, with major modulating factors taken into account. The information generated will be useful for the development of robust models to formulate environmentally friendly diets for growing pigs.  相似文献

A total of 48 Duroc×(Landrace×Large White) gilts of 33.2 kg BW were used to investigate the influence of immunocastration and diet on growth performance and carcass, meat and fat quality. Four treatments were arranged factorially (2×2) with two sexes (immunocastrated gilts: IG v. entire gilts: EG) and two dietary treatments (a commercial feedstuff as control v. granulated barley as a single major ingredient) provided during the finishing period (from 103 to 126 kg BW). There were four replicates of three pigs per treatment. At the end of the trial, the IGs grew faster (P<0.05) and ate more feed (P<0.05) than the EGs. Carcasses from the IGs had thicker backfat depth than those from the EGs (P<0.01) and carried out a lower percentage of rejected carcasses (P<0.05) at slaughterhouse owing to lack of fat. Meat from the IGs tended to have higher intramuscular fat (IMF) content in the Longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle than that from the EGs (P=0.09). In addition, immunocastration increased the total saturated fatty-acid proportion in subcutaneous fat and IMF (P<0.001) and decreased the total monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and total polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) percentages in subcutaneous backfat (P<0.05 and P<0.001, respectively) and in IMF (P<0.01 and P=0.06, respectively). The use of a diet based on granulated barley during the finishing period had no effect on growth performance but tended to increase IMF content in the LT muscle (P<0.06), and increased MUFA (P<0.05) and decreased PUFA (P<0.01) proportions in omental fat. It is concluded that immunocastration of gilts intended for dry-cured ham industry improved some aspects of growth performance and carcass and meat quality, whereas granulated barley had scarce effect on productive traits and fatty-acid profile but tended to improve IMF content.  相似文献

A total of 160 Duroc×(Landrace×Large White) pigs, 50% barrows and 50% gilts, of 28.3±4.52 kg of BW were used to study the effect of lysine (Lys) restriction in the finisher period, on growth performances and serum and carcass and meat quality traits. The grower diet (from 30 to 90 kg BW) was slightly Lys-restricted (7.8 g standardised ileal digestible (SID) Lys/kg) in accordance with results from a previous trial. During the finisher period (90 to 130 kg BW), four experimental diets with decreasing SID Lys contents (6.3, 5.6, 4.2 and 3.2 g/kg) were tested. Each of the eight treatments (two sexes×four levels of Lys) was replicated five times. Each replicate was a pen with four pigs allocated together. When animals achieved 129±2.59 kg were slaughtered and carcass and meat characteristics were evaluated. No significant interaction sex×diet was found. During the finisher period, barrows grew faster (P<0.001) and ate more feed (P<0.001) but tended to be less efficient (P=0.055) than gilts. The Lys restriction affected linearly (P<0.001) all productive performance traits; daily BW gain and feed intake decreased and feed conversion ratio increased. Also, the concentration of serum urea at slaughter tended to be higher in barrows than in gilts (P=0.065) and was reduced quadratically by the restriction of Lys in feed (P<0.001). Carcasses from barrows had higher backfat thickness (P<0.01) and lower weight of main trimmed lean cuts (ham+shoulder+loin; P<0.05) than those from gilts. The Lys restriction during the finisher period decreased carcass yield (quadratic; P<0.001) and the weight of major cuts (linear; P<0.001). Sex and diet had limited effect on meat characteristics; the Lys restriction decreased quadratically the proportion of protein (P<0.01) and increased linearly the intramuscular fat (IMF) content (P<0.001). We can conclude that dietary Lys restriction during finisher period in pigs impaired growth performances and was not successful to increase the carcass fat deposition, although it could have positive effects on IMF proportion of pork.  相似文献

The involvement of secretions from boar submaxillary salivary glands in mediating the induction of precocious puberty in the gilt was investigated as follows. Forty-eight Large White × (Large White × Landrace) prepubertal gilts from 12 litters were randomly allocated within litters by weight, to four treatment groups of six, in two replicates, at 145 days of age. Treatments commencing at a mean group age of 165 days, were: (1) control (no boar exposure); (2) gilts exposed to a mature sialectomised boar (submaxillary salivary glands were removed at 9 weeks of age); (3) gilts exposed to a mature sham-operated boar; (4) gilts exposed to a mature unoperated boar.Boar exposure occurred for 30 min per day for 75 days, or until pubertal oestrus was observed. Gilts showing pubertal oestrus were removed and slaughtered. Ovaries were examined to confirm reproductive status. Gilts failing to exhibit oestrus by 240 days of age were slaughtered and nominally ascribed a pubertal age of 245 days. Age at puberty was significantly earlier in all three boar-exposed treatments than in the control treatment (P<0.05 for treatments 2 and 3, P<0.001 for treatment 4; median ages at puberty being 227.0, 203.5 , 202.0 and 179.0 days for treatments 1 to 4 respectively). No frothy saliva was ever produced by the sialectomised boar, and chromatographic analysis of saliva produced by the sham-operated boar during mating revealed very low levels of 16-androstene pheromones, while levels in the unoperated boar's saliva were normal. These results provide further evidence for an important role of boar salivary pheromones in the induction of precocious puberty attainment in the gilt.  相似文献

A commercial pig spends nearly half of its life in utero and its nutrition during this time can influence birth weight and postnatal growth. We hypothesised that postnatal growth is increased in pigs raised by sows with a high backfat depth and high level of energy intake during gestation compared with sows with a low backfat depth and low level of energy intake during gestation. This was tested in a 2×3 factorial design experiment with 2 factors for gilt backfat depth (Thin and Fat) and 3 factors for gestation feed allowance (Restricted, Control and High). Between d 25 and d 90 of gestation, Thin gilts (n=68; 12±0.6 mm P2 backfat) and Fat gilts (n=72; 19±0.6 mm P2 backfat) were randomly allocated, as individuals, to a gestation diet (6.19 g/kg lysine, 13.0 MJ DE/kg) at the following feed allowances: 1.8 kg/day (Restricted); 2.5 kg/day (Control) and 3.5 kg/day (High). For the remainder of gestation and during lactation all gilts were treated similarly. At weaning (day 28), 155 piglets were sacrificed and 272 were individually housed and followed through to slaughter (day 158). At day 80 of gestation, fasted Thin Restricted gilts had lower serum IGF-1 concentrations than Thin High or Thin Control fed gilts (P<0.001). Pigs born from Fat gilts had greater backfat depths (P<0.05), a lower lean meat yield (P<0.05) and were heavier (P<0.05) at slaughter than pigs born from Thin gilts. Gilt gestation feed allowance had only transitory effects on average daily gain and feed conversion efficiency and had no effect on pig weight at slaughter (P>0.05) or lean meat yield (P>0.05). In conclusion, gilts with a backfat depth of ~19 mm at insemination produced pigs that were heavier and fatter at ~158 days of age than those born from gilts with ~12 mm backfat depth at insemination. Maternal body condition during gestation had a more predominant influence on growth parameters of the offspring, such as weight at slaughter and backfat depth, than did feed level during gestation.  相似文献

The reproductive efficiency of the entire sheep flock could be improved if ewe lambs go through puberty early and produce their first lamb at 1 year of age. The onset of puberty is linked to the attainment of critical body mass, and therefore we tested whether it would be influenced by genetic selection for growth rate or for rate of accumulation of muscle or fat. We studied 136 Merino ewe lambs with phenotypic values for depth of eye muscle (EMD) and fat (FAT) and Australian Sheep Breeding Values at post-weaning age (200 days) for live weight (PWT), eye muscle depth (PEMD) and fat depth (PFAT). First oestrus was detected with testosterone-treated wethers and then entire rams as the ewes progressed from 6 to 10 months of age. Blood concentrations of leptin and IGF-I were measured to test whether they were related to production traits and reproductive performance (puberty, fertility and reproductive rate). In total, 97% of the lambs reached first oestrus at average weight 39.4 ± 0.4 kg (mean ± s.e.m.) and age 219 days (range 163 to 301). Age at first oestrus decreased with increases in values for PWT (P < 0.001), and concentrations of IGF-I (P < 0.05) and leptin (P < 0.01). The proportion of ewe lambs that achieved puberty was positively related with increases in values for EMD (P < 0.01), FAT (P < 0.05) or PWT (P < 0.01), and 75% of the ewe lambs were pregnant at average weight 44.7 ± 0.5 kg and age 263 days (range 219 to 307). Ewe lambs that were heavier at the start of mating were more fertile (P < 0.001) and had a higher reproductive rate (P < 0.001). Fertility and reproductive rate were positively correlated with increases in values for EMD (P < 0.01), FAT (P < 0.05), PWT (P < 0.01) and leptin concentration (P < 0.01). Fertility, but not reproductive rate, increased as values for PFAT increased (P < 0.05). Leptin concentration increased with increases in values for EMD (P < 0.001), FAT (P < 0.001), PWT (P < 0.001), PEMD (P < 0.05) and PFAT (P < 0.05). Many of these relationships became non-significant when PWT or live weight was added to the statistical model. We conclude that selection for genetic potential for growth can accelerate the onset of puberty and increase fertility and reproductive rate of Merino ewe lambs. The metabolic hormones, IGF-I and leptin, might act as a physiological link between the growing tissues and the reproductive axis.  相似文献

The incidence of, and factors associated with, gilts failing to mate between 29 and 35 weeks of age were studied over 12 months at a large intensive piggery in southern Australia. After excluding gilts culled as physically unsound, 10.5% of the remaining 2484 gilts failed to mate and were slaughtered.Seventy percent of unmated gilts had ovulated, and of these, 54% had shown negative or low responses to the back-pressure test (BPT) and 16% had shown moderate or high responses. Few prepubertal gilts (1%) had abnormal reproductive tracts. When group size was greater than 50 gilts (< 0.9 m2/gilt) immediately prior to mating (27–28 weeks of age), there was a higher incidence of unmated gilts and an increase in the proportion of unmated gilts which had shown negative or low BPT response than when groups were less than 50 gilts (12.9 vs. 8.6%, P < 0.001; and 8.0 vs. 3.6%, P < 0.001, respectively). The incidence of prepubertal gilts at 35 weeks was lower during spring than other seasons (1.48 and 3.36%, P < 0.05) and higher during summer than other seasons (4.61 and 2.37%, P < 0.01).Fewer Large White gilts remained unmated at 35 weeks of age than Landrace or Large White-Landrace synthetic breed gilts (7.7 and 14.1% of those selected, P < 0.001). More purebred gilts were prepubertal at 35 weeks of age than crossbred gilts (5.4 and 2.4%, P < 0.01).  相似文献

Modifying finishing strategies within established production systems has the potential to increase beef output and farm profit while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Thus, the objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of finishing duration on animal performance of Holstein-Friesian (HF) bulls and steers and evaluate the profitability and GHG emissions of these finishing strategies. A total of 90 HF calves were assigned to a complete randomised block design; three bull and three steer finishing strategies. Calves were rotationally grazed in a paddock system for the first season at pasture, housed and offered grass silage ad libitum plus 1.5 kg DM of concentrate per head daily for the first winter and returned to pasture for a second season. Bulls were slaughtered at 19 months of age and either finished indoors on concentrates ad libitum for 100 days (19AL), finished at pasture supplemented with 5 kg DM of concentrate per head daily for 100 (19SP) or 150 days (19LP). Steers were slaughtered at 21 months of age and finished at pasture, supplemented with 5 kg DM of concentrate per head daily for 60 (21SP) and 110 days (21LP) or slaughtered at 24 months of age and finished indoors over the second winter on grass silage ad libitum plus 5 kg DM of concentrate per head daily (24MO). The Grange Dairy Beef Systems Model and the Beef Systems Greenhouse Gas Emissions Model were used to evaluate profitability and GHG emissions, respectively. Average daily gain during the finishing period (P<0.001), live weight at slaughter (P<0.01), carcass weight (P<0.05) and fat score (P<0.001) were greater for 19AL than 19SP and 19LP, respectively. Similarly, concentrate dry matter intake was greater for 19AL than 19SP; 19LP was intermediate (P<0.001). Live weight at slaughter (P<0.001), carcass weight (P<0.001), conformation score (P<0.05) and fat score (P<0.001) were greater for 24MO than 21SP and 21LP, respectively. During the finishing period concentrate dry matter intake was greater for 21LP than 21SP with 24MO intermediate; 542, 283 and 436 kg DM, respectively. Although pasture-based finishing strategies had lower gross output values, concentrate feed costs were also reduced thus net margin was greater than indoor finishing strategies. Reducing concentrate input increased GHG emissions for bulls and steers slaughtered at the same age, respectively. Although prolonging the finishing duration reduced GHG emissions for bull and steer production systems, finishing bulls and steers over a longer period at pasture did not enhance animal performance and profit.  相似文献

Immunocastration (IC, vaccination against gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)) is one alternative to surgical castration (SC) for preventing sexual development and boar taint in male pigs. A temporal increase in performance has been described for IC pigs before the second vaccination against GnRH. The objective of this work was to assess the effects of IC on Iberian male and female pigs (fed diets of increasing CP content) on performance, nitrogen retention (NR) and digestibility, and carcass traits. Fifty-four pure Iberian pigs individually housed were allocated to a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement with three sex groups (IC males, IC females and SC males), three diets (153, 137 and 119 g CP/kg DM; 14 MJ metabolisable energy/kg DM) and six pigs per treatment combination. Pigs were vaccinated at 18 weeks of age (40 kg BW) and seven weeks later (70–80 kg BW) and fed at 0.9 × ad libitum on BW basis. Two digestibility and nitrogen balance assays were performed before and after the second vaccination, respectively. Pigs were slaughtered at 105 kg BW. Before the second vaccination, Iberian IC males showed higher growth rate (g/day), feed efficiency, NR (g/day) and efficiency of NR than the other groups (P < 0.001). The NR and efficiency of NR was 40% greater in IC v. SC males (P < 0.001). After the second vaccination, no differences in performance between sex groups were detected (P > 0.05). Growth rate and feed efficiency were higher in IC males than in the other groups for the whole experimental period (from the first vaccination to slaughter; P < 0.001). After the second vaccination, differences among sex groups in NR and the efficiency of NR disappeared (P > 0.05). NR efficiency was 0.177 on average. No significant effects of dietary CP were detected on performance. The NR was greater in pigs fed the 153 CP diet (17 to 37%; P > 0.05). Lean components of carcass (sirloin, loin and butt lean) were greater in IC males than in the other groups (0.001 < P < 0.05). There were no significant sex group × dietary CP interactions. Iberian IC males grew at higher rate, deposited more protein, and more efficiently, than Iberian SC males before the second vaccination against GnRH. Iberian IC females showed similar growth performance to SC males and intermediate protein deposition efficiency between IC and SC males. Despite the higher growth performance, protein deposition rate, and efficiency of protein deposition of IC males v. SC males, no significant differences in amino acid requirements were detected between them.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that use of altrenogest resulted in a high rate of fertility and increased litter size compared with controls under conditions of practical pig production. The present study was designed to evaluate whether ovulation rate and/or foetal survival were increased by altrenogest using crossbred gilts derived from one herd (n = 227) and introduced in the same piggery over 12 months. Each gilt was allocated to a treated group (n = 103) receiving an individual daily dose of 20 mg of altrenogest for 18 days in its feed or a control group (n = 124) after puberty had been diagnosed, (197 ± 1 day; mean ± SEM). They were inseminated (double AI) at the second induced or natural oestrus. Pregnancy was diagnosed by ultrasonography at Days 22 and 42 post-insemination in the absence of return to oestrus. Pregnant gilts were slaughtered at 48 ± 3 days of pregnancy following the second examination. The number of living and dead foetuses were recorded before uterine contents (foetuses and placentae) were weighed and the number of corpora lutea (CL) per ovary counted.Precise synchronization of oestrus was observed after the end of the progestogen administration, with 93% of the gilts in oestrus by Days 5 to 7. For the controls, the interval from first to second oestrus ranged from 17 to 25 days in 93% of the control gilts. The pregnancy rate was 89.3% for treated gilts and 77.4% for controls (P < 0.05). The ovulation rate was increased by the treatment (15.4 ± 0.3 vs 14.6 ± 0.3; mean ± SEM, P < 0.02). Although the altrenogest group had more foetuses (11.1 vs 10.6), this difference was not significant (P > 0.14). The percent of foetal survival was similar in both groups (64.9%; P > 0.27). The foetal and placental weights differed only between dams and increased with stage of gestation. The objective was to determine the effect of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), GnRH analogue (GnRH-A) or oestradiol administration on luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) release in GnRH-immunised anoestrous and control cyclic heifers. Thirty-two heifers (477 ± 7.1 kg) were immunised against either human serum albumin (HSA; controls; n = 8), or a HSAGnRH conjugate. On day 70 after primary immunisation, control heifers (n = 4 per treatment; day 3 of cycle) received either (a) 2.5 μg GnRH or (b) 2.5 μg of GnRH-A (Buserelin®) and GnRH-immunised heifers (blocked by GnRH antibody titre; n = 6 per treatment) received either (c) saline, (d) 2.5 μg GnRH, (e) 25 μg GnRH or (f) 2.5 μg GnRH-A, intravenously. On day 105, 1 mg oestradiol was injected (intramuscularly) into control (n = 6) and GnRH-immunised anoestrous heifers with either low (13.4 ± 1.9% binding at 1:640; n = 6) or high GnRH antibody titres (33.4 ± 4.8% binding; n = 6). Data were analysed by ANOVA. Mean plasma LH and FSH concentrations on day 69 were higher (P < 0.05) in control than in GnRH-immunised heifers (3.1 ± 0.16 vs. 2.5 ± 0.12 ng LH ml−1 and 22.5 ± 0.73 vs. 17.1 ± 0.64 ng FSH ml−1, respectively). The number of LH pulses was higher (P < 0.05) in control than in GnRH-immunised heifers on day 69 (3.4 ± 0.45 and 1.0 ± 0.26 pulses per 6 h, respectively). On day 70, 2.5 μg GnRH increased (P < 0.05) LH concentrations in control but not in GnRH-immunised heifers, while both 25 μg GnRH and 2.5 μg GnRH-A increased (P < 0.05) LH concentrations in GnRH-immunised heifers, and 2.5 μg GnRH-A increased LH in controls. FSH was increased (P < 0.05) in GnRH-immunised heifers following 25 μg GnRH and 2.5 μg GnRH-A. Oestradiol challenge increased (P < 0.05) LH concentrations during the 13–24 h period after challenge with a greater (P < 0.05) increase in control than in GnRH-immunised heifers. FSH concentrations were decreased (P < 0.05) for at least 30 h after oestradiol challenge. In conclusion, GnRH immunisation decreased LH pulsatility and mean LH and FSH concentrations. GnRH antibodies neutralised low doses of GnRH (2.5 μg), but not high doses of GnRH (25 μg) and GnRH-A (2.5 μg). GnRH immunisation decreased the rise in LH concentrations following oestradiol challenge.  相似文献

The final dose of progesterone (5, 10, 20 mg) and time to oestrogen injection relative to the final dose of progesterone (24–72 h) had no significant effect on the production of cervical mucus measured 24 h after the injection of 30 μg oestradiol benzoate (ODB). However, there were significant effects on the behavioural oestrous responses (time from injection of oestrogen to onset of oestrus and duration of oestrus). Time to onset of oestrus increased from 18 to 27.8 h with increasing dose of progesterone (P < 0.001) and decreased from 24.8 to 20 h with increasing time to oestrogen injection (P < 0.05). Conversely, the duration of oestrus decreased from 36.2 to 23.8 h with increasing dose of progesterone (P < 0.001) and increased from 29 to 39 h with increasing time to oestrogen injection (P < 0.01).Ovariectomized ewes became refractory to ODB as measured by the cervical mucus response after the fifth sequential daily injection of 20 μg oestradiol benzoate. Progesterone priming was not required to restore subsequent sensitivity to oestrogen treatment. However, there was a positive linear relationship between length of recovery period and level of response to subsequent treatment. It was concluded that: (1) progesterone pre-treatment or priming is not necessary in the cervical mucus bioassay in ovariectomized ewes; and (2) a period of 8–16 days is needed between assays for normal sensitivity to be regained.  相似文献

Previous work has suggested that an acute behavioural confinement in mid-partum can inhibit oxytocin secretion and prolong delivery in the pig, an effect that is opioid mediated. The present experiment investigated the effect of longer-term (chronic) behavioural confinement, that has previously been shown to elevate total plasma cortisol, on speed of delivery and on plasma oxytocin and lysine vasopressin concentrations during the peri-parturient period in primiparous pigs (gilts). Five days before their expected parturition (farrowing) date, gilts with preplaced jugular catheters were either confined to farrowing crates that severely restricted maternal behaviour, or housed in pens that permitted free movement and maternal behaviour (e.g. nest building). Blood samples were taken continuously from 24 h before the birth of the first piglet (BFP) to 6 h post-BFP, and for oxytocin on Days 1, 2, and 7 following parturition (Days P1, P2, P7). Both oxytocin and vasopressin were strongly influenced by parturition (P<0.001). There was no overall effect of chronic crating on either hormone, but crated and penned gilts did show significant differences with respect to the pattern of both oxytocin and vasopressin concentrations over time (P<0.05 in both cases). Oxytocin and vasopressin first increased in crated and penned gilts from 3 h pre-BFP (P<0.05). Crated gilts subsequently showed greater increases in both oxytocin and vasopressin over the first hour of delivery than penned gilts (mean oxytocin (pmol 1−1): 53.3±8.5 vs. 39.7±5.0 for crated vs. penned gilts; mean vasopressin (pmol l−1):4.4±0.7 vs. 2.0±04 for crated vs. penned gilts; both P<0.05). For oxytocin, crated gilts then showed subsequent declining concentrations relative to penned gilts (P<0.05). For vasopressin, penned gilts reached similar concentrations as crated gilts in the third hour post-BFP before vasopressin concentrations in both groups declined. Crated gilts also gave birth to piglets faster in the early stages of delivery (e.g. mean interval between Piglets 2 and 3 (min): 9.6±2.5 vs. 25.6±8.54 for crated and penned gilts, respectively: P<0.02). We conclude that confinement of gilts to a farrowing crate for 5 days neither adversely affects the progress of delivery in the primiparous pig nor the secretion of posterior pituitary hormones involved in parturition.  相似文献

The influence of three handling treatments on the behaviour, reproduction and free corticosteroid concentrations was studied in 15 male and 30 female pigs. Two handling treatments, considered as pleasant and unpleasant, were imposed for 5 min, three times per week from 11 weeks of age. The third handling treatment involved minimal contact with humans from 11 weeks of age. In a 3-min test at 18 weeks, pigs in the pleasant treatment were quicker (P<0.01) to enter an area within 0.5 m of the experimenter and had more interactions (P<0.05) with the experimenter than pigs in the unpleasant and minimal treatments. Gilts in the unpleasant treatment had a lower (P<0.05) pregnancy rate at the second oestrus when mated to non-experimental boars than gilts in the pleasant treatment (33.3 and 87.5%, respectively). Boars in the unpleasant treatment had smaller (P<0.05) testicles at 23 weeks of age and attained a coordinated mating response at a later age (P<0.05) than boars in the pleasant treatment (53.2 and 63.3 cm2, and 192 and 161 days, respectively). In addition, pigs in the unpleasant treatment had higher (P<0.05) free corticosteroid concentrations in the absence of humans at 20 weeks (gilts) and 27 weeks (boars) than pigs in the pleasant treatment (boars and gilts combined, 2.4 and 1.7 ng ml−1, respectively). For many of the reproductive parameters, the effect of the minimal handling treatment was intermediate to that of the other two treatments. It was concluded that the unpleasant handling treatment resulted in a chronic stress response, with consequent adverse effects on reproduction.  相似文献

The specialization process associated with genetic selection could be associated with functional disorders, affecting the reproductive success of females (fitness). We hypothesized that by modulating energy acquisition and allocation of females we could balance productivity and reproductive success. To test this hypothesis, we used 203 rabbit females belonging to three genetic types: H (n=66) maternal line specialized in prolificacy, LP (n=67) generalist maternal line, R (n=70) paternal line specialized in growth rate. We fed each genetic type with two diets specifically designed to promote milk yield (AF) or body reserves recovery (CS). We controlled females between their first and fifth reproductive cycles, recording traits related with productivity and fitness of females. H females fed CS had on average 11.2±0.43 kits with an individual weight of 54±1.2 g at birth and 525±11 g at weaning. Their conception rate when multiparous was 44% and their survival rate at the end of the experiment 30%. When they were fed AF, the individual weight of kits was 3.8 g heavier (P<0.05) at birth and 38 g heavier at weaning (P<0.05), the conception rate when multiparous increased 23 percentage points (P<0.05) and the survival rate at the end of the experiment 25 percentage points (P<0.05). LP females fed CS had on average 10.8±0.43 kits with an individual weight of 52±1.2 g at birth and 578±11 g at weaning. Their conception rate when multiparous was 79% and their survival rate at the end of the experiment 75%. When they were fed AF, it only increased individual weight of kits at weaning (+39 g; P<0.05). R females fed CS had on average 8.4±0.43 kits with an individual weight of 60±1.2 g at birth and 568±11 g at weaning. Their conception rate when multiparous was 60% and their survival rate at the end of the experiment 37%. When they were fed AF, they presented 1.4 kits less at birth (P<0.05) but heavier at birth (+4.9 g; P<0.05) and at weaning (+37 g; P<0.05). Therefore, we observed that genetic types prioritized different fitness components and that diets could affected them. In this sense, seems that more specialized genetic types, were more sensitive to diets than the more generalist type.  相似文献

Feed efficiency is an important trait in the future sustainability of pig production, however, the mechanisms involved are not fully elucidated. The objective of this study was to examine nutrient digestibility, organ weights, select bacterial populations, volatile fatty acids (VFA’s), enzyme and intestinal nutrient transporter gene expression in a pig population divergent in feed efficiency. Male pigs (n=75; initial BW 22.4 kg SEM 2.03 kg) were fed a standard finishing diet for 43 days before slaughter to evaluate feed intake and growth for the purpose of calculating residual feed intake (RFI). Phenotypic RFI was calculated as the residuals from a regression model regressing average daily feed intake (ADFI) on average daily gain (ADG) and midtest BW0.60 (MBW). On day 115, 16 pigs (85 kg SEM 2.8 kg), designated as high RFI (HRFI) and low RFI (LRFI) were slaughtered and digesta was collected to calculate the coefficient of apparent ileal digestibility (CAID), total tract nutrient digestibility (CATTD), microbial populations and VFA’s. Intestinal tissue was collected to examine intestinal nutrient transporter and enzyme gene expression. The LRFI pigs had lower ADFI (P<0.001), improved feed conversion ratio (P<0.001) and an improved RFI value relative to HRFI pigs (0.19 v. −0.14 SEM 0.08; P<0.001). The LRFI pigs had an increased CAID of gross energy (GE), and an improved CATTD of GE, nitrogen and dry matter compared to HRFI pigs (P<0.05). The LRFI pigs had higher relative gene expression levels of fatty acid binding transporter 2 (FABP2) (P<0.01), the sodium/glucose co-transporter 1 (SGLT1) (P<0.05), the glucose transporter GLUT2 (P<0.10), and the enzyme sucrase–isomaltase (SI) (P<0.05) in the jejunum. The LRFI pigs had increased populations of lactobacillus spp. in the caecum compared with HRFI pigs. In colonic digesta HRFI pigs had increased acetic acid concentrations (P<0.05). Differences in nutrient digestibility, intestinal microbial populations and gene expression levels of intestinal nutrient transporters could contribute to the biological processes responsible for feed efficiency in pigs.  相似文献
