Summary 1. Gamma radiation dose-rates over mud-flat areas are shown to be at least ten times those measured over sandy beaches.2. Analysis of the surface sediment layer in an estuarine area 6 miles from the Windscale effluent pipeline shows the major gamma-emitting radionuclides to be95Zr,95Nb and106Rh.3. Core sampling has indicated that the radioactivity concentration in silt decreases exponentially with depth from the surface layer.4. It is shown that the gamma dose-rate above silt banks is largely accounted for by the concentration of95Zr/95Nb in the surface silt layer. The residual gamma dose is probably accounted for by106Ru/106Rh distributed beneath the surface layer.5. The accumulation factors of95Zr +95Nb and106Ru in the surface silt layer are approximately 1.5×104.6. The relationship of radioactivity concentration in surface silt to distance from the effluent pipeline can be described by a simple power function of distance.

Kurzfassung Als Teil einer Untersuchung über die Verbreitung von radioaktivem Abwasser, das von der radiochemischen Aufarbeitungsanlage in Windscale stammt, wurden Messungen der Gamma-Dosisleistung auf Schlickböden in Ästuaren vorgenommen. Es zeigte sich, daß die Dosisleistungen hier mindestens um eine Größenordnung höher sind als die, welche auf reinem Sandboden gemessen wurden. Oberflächensedimente, die hinsichtlich ihrer Radioaktivität untersucht wurden, enthalten als wichtigste Radionuklide die Spaltprodukte95Zr +95Nb,106Ru,144Ce und137Cs. Die Konzentrationen der einzelnen Radionuklide stehen in Beziehung zur Abwassermenge. Probebohrungen in Sedimenten zeigten, daß sich die Konzentration der Radioaktivität exponentiell mit der Tiefe ändert. Der Anreicherungsfaktor von95Zr +95Nb,106Ru in Oberflächensedimenten von Ästuaren beträgt ungefähr 1,5 × 104, für137Cs dagegen 1,0 × 103. Die Konzentrationen von95Zr +95Nb,106Ru und144Ce in Oberflächensedimenten sind abhängig vom Abstand der Abwassereinleitung bei Windscale.

Summary Due to the large absorbing surface of the mycelium that grows in the upper parts of the soil mushrooms take up higher amounts of137Cs and40K than lichens. Besides these nuclides only the long-lived radionuclides125Sb and60Co could be measured; but not the short-lived fission-products144Ce,95Zr and95Nb which probably decayed before absorption into the mycelium. These nuclides, however, are present in lichens because of their surface structures which enable high foliar deposition.The137Cs-content of lichens is probably due to absorption by the mycobiont and seems to be used to satisfy their potassium-requirements. Mushrooms on the other hand are characterized by a relatively stable potassium-content and a wide ranging137Cs-content which depends on the availability in different substrates. Occasionally the natural radionuclides238U and226Ra could be detected in mushroom and lichen samples, showing no correlation with the natural radionuclide content of the soil.  相似文献

Regions of elevated natural radioactivity (Gastein–valley, Waldviertel) were compared to regions of low natural radioactivity (surroundings of Salzburg City). The natural radionuclides 238U, 40K and 7Be and the man–made nuclides 137Cs, 144Ce, 95Ze95Nb were measured by gamma ray spectrometry. No statistically significant difference was found between samples of the Gastein–valley, Waldviertel, Salzburg, Grossarl and Dachstein concerning the content of natural radionuclides. The amount of the short–lived fission products 144Ce, 95Zr–95Nb as well as of the natural 7Be increased with altitude. The specific nuclide concentration varies with species but was almost independent of growth form and substrate.  相似文献

An extensive programme of experiments on transfer of radionuclides to aquatic species was conducted in the former USSR starting from the early 1950s. Only a few of these studies were made available in the English language literature or taken into account in international reviews of radionuclide behaviour in marine ecosystems. Therefore, an overview of original information on radionuclide transfer to marine biota species available from Russian language literature sources is presented here. The concentration ratio (CR) values for many radionuclides and for marine species such as: 239Pu, 106Ru and 95Zr (crustacean), 54Mn, 90Sr, 95Nb, 106Ru, 137Cs 239Pu, 241Am and natural U (molluscs), and 54Mn, 90Sr, 137Cs and 144Ce (fish) are in good agreement with those previously published, whilst for some of them, in particular, for 32P and 110Ag (crustaceans), 35S (molluscs), 32P, 35S, 95Nb, and 106Ru (macroalgae) and 60Co and 239,240Pu (fish) the data presented here suggest that changes in the default CR reference values presented in recent marine reviews may be required. The data presented here are intended to supplement substantially the CR values being collated within the handbook on Wildlife Transfer Coefficients, coordinated under the IAEA EMRAS II programme.  相似文献

For the current on-site evaluation of the environmental contamination and contributory external exposure after the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP) and the nuclear tests at the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Testing Site (SNTS), the concentrations of artificial radionuclides in soil samples from each area were analyzed by gamma spectrometry. Four artificial radionuclides (241Am, 134Cs, 137Cs, and 60Co) were detected in surface soil around CNPP, whereas seven artificial radionuclides (241Am, 57Co, 137Cs, 95Zr, 95Nb, 58Co, and 60Co) were detected in surface soil around SNTS. Effective doses around CNPP were over the public dose limit of 1 mSv/y (International Commission on Radiological Protection, 1991). These levels in a contaminated area 12 km from Unit 4 were high, whereas levels in a decontaminated area 12 km from Unit 4 and another contaminated area 15 km from Unit 4 were comparatively low. On the other hand, the effective doses around SNTS were below the public dose limit. These findings suggest that the environmental contamination and effective doses on the ground definitely decrease with decontamination such as removing surface soil, although the effective doses of the sampling points around CNPP in the present study were all over the public dose limit. Thus, the remediation of soil as a countermeasure could be an extremely effective method not only for areas around CNPP and SNTS but also for areas around the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP), and external exposure levels will be certainly reduced. Long-term follow-up of environmental monitoring around CNPP, SNTS, and FNPP, as well as evaluation of the health effects in the population residing around these areas, could contribute to radiation safety and reduce unnecessary exposure to the public.  相似文献

In 1951 and 1952 specialists from the Mayak production association investigated the radiological situation in the area of the Metlinski reservoir that was located 5-7 km from the site of liquid radioactive waste (LRW) discharge. Based on their measurements of both the specific radioactivity in the water and the dose-rate above the water surface, the gamma-field above the water surface in 1951 was demonstrated to be mainly due to (95)Zr+(95)Nb. The dose-rate at the shore of the reservoir was calculated for the period 1949-1951. In November and December 1951, the gamma-field at the shore was mainly due to (140)Ba+(140)La. For the period 1949-1951, the external exposure of the Metlino population due to the decay of these radionuclides was about 200 R (2 Sv), most of the dose having been produced in 1951. The contribution of (137)Cs to external doses did at that time probably not exceed a fraction of several percent. This finding is in contradiction to the assumptions made in the most recent TRDS-2000 system that was developed to reconstruct the doses to the residents of the Techa river. The results presented here demonstrate that the reconstruction of external doses received by the Metlino population as well as by the Techa river residents can be improved for the most critical period between 1949 and 1954.  相似文献

A dynamic model was developed for evaluation of the fish contamination by 137Cs. The dynamics of the accumulation of the radionuclide and the elimination is calculated taking into account the ecological and physiological characteristics of the fish, such as growth and metabolic rates, its position in the food chains of the aquatic ecosystem. The biological elimination of 137Cs from the freshwater fish is proportional to the metabolic rate of the fish. The dimensionless coefficient of the proportionality is equal to epsilonA = 0.3 +/- 0.1. The model was applied for the reconstruction of the long-term dynamics of 137Cs in the food chain "goldfish-pike" from Lake Kozhanovskoe (Bryansk Region, Russia). In 1990-1999 the specific activity of 137Cs in goldfish (generation of 1990) varied in range about 5-20 kBq/kg, whereas the specific activity of 137Cs in pike (generation of 1989) varied in range about 20-40 kBq/kg. The comparison with the data of the observations confirmed that the presented method allows to evaluate adequately the levels and the dynamics of 137Cs accumulation by the freshwater fish.  相似文献

The radioecological research of Irtysh-river and Ob-river was held. The content of 137Cs in Irtysh water was compounded 0.62-1.23 Bq/m3, in Ob-- 0.24-0.27 Bq/m3, and the one of 90Sr in Irtysh-- 10-20 Bq/m3, and in Ob-- 5-10 Bq/m3, that is much lower than the permissible sanitary-hygienic norms for the population. The 137Cs stores density on Irtysh-river input lease was compounded 2.7 kBq/m2, is almost in 11 times slashed downstream and is peer 245 kBq/m2 before the Irtysh-river lockin. The 90Sr stores density also was slashed in surveyed leases with 212 down to 106 Bq/m2. Two variants of integrated stores of 137Cs and of 90Sr in flood of the Irtysh-river was held. The balance calculation of annual radionuclides sinks confirms the dominant amount of 137Cs and of 90Sr in downstream Ob-river leases acts now on the Ob's sleeve, instead of from the Irtysh-river as it was supposed earlier. The 137Cs medial annual inflow from the Ob's sleeve almost is in 2 times, and the 90Sr inflow is in 2.3 times more, than are acts from Irtysh-river sleeve.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES--To compare caesium-137 concentrations in patients from the Western Isles Health Board, Glasgow area, and other parts of the Scottish mainland, and to investigate the source of 137Cs in patients from the Western Isles. DESIGN--Study of hypertensive patients having electrolyte concentrations measured, including 137Cs. Interview by questionnaire of island subjects about intake of foods likely to contain radiocaesium and the source of these foods. Measurement of 137Cs and 134Cs in food, urine, and vegetation. SETTING--Scottish mainland and Western Isles, 1979-86. All measurements before Chernobyl nuclear accident. PATIENTS--413 consecutive patients referred to the blood pressure unit for investigation of hypertension. 60 from the Western Isles, including 44 from North Uist; 32 from North Uist participated in the dietary analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Concentration of radiocaesium in the body, urine, food, and vegetation. Islanders'' consumption of local produce. RESULTS--Patients from the Western Isles had five times higher body concentrations of 137Cs (median 2.54 (interquartile range 1.25-3.73)) Bq/gK) than did patients from around Glasgow (0.47 (0.26-0.66) Bq/gK) and other parts of the Scottish mainland (0.42 (0.24-0.71) Bq/gK). Islanders often consumed local milk and mutton, but ate local fish rarely. 137Cs and 134Cs were present in coastal (21.6 Bq/kg 137Cs, 0.25 Bq/kg 134Cs) and moorland (135.9, 0.65 Bq/kg) grasses and in islanders'' urine (2.01, 0.013 Bq/l). Lower concentrations (0.336, 0.004 Bq/l), were found in the urine of Glasgow controls (p less than 0.001 for both isotopes). CONCLUSIONS--Islanders have excess body 137Cs concentrations, most of which probably comes from local milk and lamb. The radioactivity is not above the recommended safety limit. The presence of 134Cs suggests that nuclear reprocessing is the source of some of the radiocaesium.  相似文献

The radionuclide content was measured in mushrooms collected in different sites situated in the zone of the radiation influence on the Mining-and-Chemical Combine at Zheleznogorsk and on the control site, near Krasnoyarsk, in 2002-2004. The analytical investigations of fruiting bodies of 12 mushroom species have revealed three gamma-emitting radionuclides: 7Be, 40K (natural) and 137Cs (artificial). It was found that only three species contain 7Be; activity concentration of 40K is not species- and site-dependent, averaging 1600 Bq/kg. All collected samples contain 137Cs, and its accumulation by mushrooms is species-specific. Suillus concentrates more 137Cs activity than other species and can be used as a bioindicator of soil contamination with radiocesium. The average activity concentration of 137Cs in Suillus granulatus collected in the sites subjected only to aerosol discharges of the MCC is more than twice higher than 137Cs content of the mushrooms collected in the control site--"Krasnoyarsk". The maximum activity concentration of 137Cs in Suillus samples collected in the sites that receive 137Cs with the flood water is an order of magnitude higher, amounting to 8624 Bq/kg. The analysis of the radionuclide distribution in a mushroom shows that 40K activity concentration is the same in caps and stems of Suillus, and 137Cs concentration in Suillus caps is 1.7-2.3 times higher than in stems. Binding of radionuclides by mushroom biomass was determined by chemical fractionation; it was found that the highest activities of 137Cs and 40K are in the exchange-adsorption fraction (56 to 71% of the total content of a radionuclide) and in the organic fraction (23 to 37%). Calculations were made for determination of the coefficients of 40K and 137Cs transfer from the soil to the fruiting body of Suillus.  相似文献

The regularities of 137Cs distribution and accumulation in organs and tissues of sheep on a farm located in the Chernobyl accidental zone were experimentally estimated. The distribution pattern of 137Cs concentration in organs and tissues is found to depend on the duration of the radionuclide uptake with the ration. During the first 24 h the highest 137Cs concentration is reported in the parenchymal organs; starting from day 30 muscular tissue and kidneys rank first, whereas in the other organs and tissues 137Cs concentration is 1.5-2 times lower. By 137Cs content and accumulation rate the study organs are arranged in a declining order as follows: muscles > > skin > liver > kidneys > heart > spleen. The mathematical models were devised describing the dynamics of increasing with time in 137Cs concentration in muscles, liver and skin. The methodology is suggested for the prediction of levels of 137Cs contamination of the muscular tissue of sheep. The time periods were regulated for sheep feeding with 137Cs contaminated fodder that ensure the production of mutton the radionuclide concentration in which meets the sanitary-hygienic standards.  相似文献

A comparison was made of 134Cs and 137Cs contamination in fungi from eastern Europe and eastern North America. Mean activities of 25 Ukrainian, 6 Swedish, and 10 North American collections were 4,660, 9,750, and 205 Bq/kg (dry weight), respectively. Additional measurements were made on samples from the Moscow, southern Belarus, and Yugoslavia/Bulgaria regions. Activity values were found to vary by several orders of magnitude within all geographic areas, even for the same mushroom species. Significantly higher specific activities were observed in mycorrhizal species than in saprophytic and parasitic fungi. Unfortunately, many of the European mycorrhizal species considered as prized edibles contained unacceptably high levels of 137Cs (> 1,000 Bq/kg [dry weight]) and should be used sparingly as food. By contrast, no mushrooms collected in Ontario or northern Michigan exceeded 1,000 Bq of 137Cs per kg (dry weight). The excessive 137Cs contamination was evident in mushrooms from areas that had substantial fallout from the 1986 accident in reactor 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power station. However, observations suggest that about 20% of the 137Cs in eastern Europe (Moscow area, Belarus, and Ukraine) is of non-Chernobyl origin.  相似文献

The results of research of horizontal migration of 137Cs with soils water erosion are presented. It was found that quantitative parameters of 137Cs migration depended on radioactive pollution of cultivated soil layer, volume of water erosion of soils and character of usage of sloping lands. Activity of 137Cs in lower parts of slopes was 37-295 kBq/m2 higher than in the middle and apex parts of slopes. Increase in 137Cs activity varied from 10 to 18 percent in accumulation zone as compared to outwash zone with soil losses 5.0 t/ha and from 17 to 35 percent with soil losses 5.1-10.0 t/ha and from 30 to 127 percent with soil losses 10. 1-20.0 t/ha.  相似文献

Depth distributions and inventories of137Cs (mCi km2) were determined in sediment from several fresh water lakes in the New York State Adirondack Preserve. Included were Big Moose and Darts Lakes, part of the North Branch of the Moose River system, as well as North, Sagamore, South, and Woods Lakes and the seepage pond, Tamarack Lake. Comparisons were made between the137Cs inventories in these lakes and large inpoundments in the Adirondacks (Hinkley, Great Sacandaga, Stillwater and Cranberry Lake Reservoirs) and other large impoundments and lakes located in various regions of the U.S., especially Cayuga Lake, Ithaca, NY.None of the Adirondack Lakes had137Cs distributions with depth in sediment that closely resembled the deposition pattern of weapons testing as a function of time. All of the natural lakes and small impoundments, including the seepage pond, were found to have significantly lower inventories of137Cs than expected; while the large reservoirs were generally enhanced in137Cs. We suggest that more than one mechanism may be responsible for the low sediment inventories: for the majority of lakes, flushing of137Cs out of the lakes during periods of thermal stratification and ice thaw; and for the seepage pond, remobilization of137Cs into the water column due to biological recycling.  相似文献

The paper deals with a comparative study of 137Cs contamination in forest, old arable and cultivated soils of Tula Region. Initial interception of Chernobyl derived 137Cs is higher in forest ecosystems: oak-forest > birch-forest > pine-forest > agricultural ecosystems. Vertical migration of 137Cs in deeper layers of soils was intensive in agricultural ecosystems: cultivated soils > old arable soils > birch-forest soils > oak-forest soils > pine-forest soils. In study have been evaluated spatial variability of 137Cs in soil and asymmetrical distribution, that is a skew to the right. Spatial heterogeneity of 137Cs in agricultural soils is much lower than in forest soils. For cultivated soil are determined the rate of resuspension, which equal to 6.1 x 10(-4) day(-1). For forest soils are described the 137Cs concentration in litter of different ecosystems. The role of main accumulation and barrier of 137Cs retain higher layers of soils (horizon A1(A1E) in forest, horizon Ap in agricultural ecosystems) in long-term forecast after Chernobyl accident.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate distribution of (137)Cs in leg and breast meat of broilers and pheasants following single alimentary contamination and administration of two protectors (AFCF and clinoptilolite). The birds were administered a single dose of (137)CsCl, with an activity of 750?Bq. Protectors were given via gastric tube or mixed in the forage pellets. AFCF given via gastric tube decreased the (137)Cs concentration by a factor of 7.8 in broilers leg meat and 7.4 in broilers breast meat. When AFCF was mixed in pellets, the (137)Cs concentration was 19.5 times lower in broilers leg meat and 22.1 times lower in broilers breast meat, than in the control group. In pheasants, AFCF administered via gastric tube decreased the (137)Cs concentration by a factor of 12.4 in leg meat and by a factor of 13.7 in breast meat, respectively. In group 4, where pheasants were administered AFCF mixed in pellets, the (137)Cs concentration was 3.7 times lower in leg and breast meat, than in the control group. For comparison, clinoptilolite administered via gastric tube decreased the (137)Cs concentration 1.8 times in broilers leg meat and 2.0 times in breast meat, compared to the control group. In pheasants, (137)Cs concentration was 2.9 times lower in leg meat and 2.6 times lower in breast meat. Clinoptilolite mixed in the feed had relatively low efficiency of protection in broilers ((137)Cs concentration was 1.4 times lower in leg meat and 1.6 lower in breast meat). A similar trend was observed in pheasants ((137)Cs concentration was 1.6 lower in leg and breast meat).  相似文献

The range of researches was made on 137Cs and 90Sr distribution regularities in pine tree plantations depending on different edaphic conditions. It is shown that total radionuclide amount in the forest litter depends on its thickness and is thought to be 10 to 70% for 137Cs and 20 to 60% for 90Sr. When soil fertility come increases from trophotop "A" to "C", 137Cs and 90Sr transfer factors for wood reduce. Soil humidity increase for each grade of trophic net results in increase of 137Cs transfer factors to wood and decrease for 90Sr. Total activity of 37Cs and 90Sr in pine wood plantation depends on plantation productivity and radionuclide transfer factors depending on different plantation conditions. In the most prevailing edaphotops pine wood accumulates 1-3% of 137Cs and 6-11% of 90Sr from total activity of radionuclides in biogeocenosis.  相似文献

The soil-potato transfer factor for 137Cs (TF) was estimated by using results of 137Cs activity concentration measurements in 214 samples of soil and potato taken at fields with various level of contamination with 137Cs. The relationships between the coefficient TF and soil characteristics (acidity pH (KCl), content of K2O, P2O5, CaO and MgO in soil) and soil contamination with 137Cs have been analysed. The results show that the TF values tend to decrease with increasing concentration of 137Cs, K2O, P2O5, and CaO in considered sod-podsolic sandyloam soil. The regression function describing the TF dependence of 137Cs, K2O, P2O5, and CaO content in soil has been derived.  相似文献

The distribution of 137Cs and 239,240Pu in sediment core samples of the Finnish lakes Laukunlampi, Lovojärvi and Pääjärvi were determined. The sediment samples were collected using dry ice and liquid nitrogen freezing methods. The sediments of these lakes are annually laminated. A clear maximum concentration of 137Cs and 239,240Pu was found in sediment layers formed during 1962–1964, the years of maximum fallout, and the middle of the 1950's can be estimated from the 137Cs and 239,240Pu profiles. The highest concentrations, 11 500 and 820 pCi kg–1 dry wt for 137Cs and 239,240Pu, respectively, were found in the sediment of Laukunlampi. The vertical distribution was similar for 137Cs and 239,240Pu in the lakes investigated. A slight migration of 239,240Pu and 137Cs was found and the migration of 137Cs seems to be higher than that of 239,240Pu. The advantages of 137Cs dating method are rapidity and simplicity. 239,240Pu is preferable when the sample size is small. The agreement found between 137Cs and 239,240Pu dates and the annual laminae show that these fallout radio isotopes can be used for dating sediments formed during the past 25 years.  相似文献
