Examining the relevance of ‘animal personality’ involves linking consistent among- and within-individual behavioural variation to fitness in the wild. Studies aiming to do this typically assay personality in captivity and rely on the assumption that measures of traits in the laboratory reflect their expression in nature. We examined this rarely tested assumption by comparing laboratory and field measurements of the behaviour of wild field crickets (Gryllus campestris) by continuously monitoring individual behaviour in nature, and repeatedly capturing the same individuals and measuring their behaviour in captivity. We focused on three traits that are frequently examined in personality studies: shyness, activity and exploration. All of them showed repeatability in the laboratory. Laboratory activity and exploration predicted the expression of their equivalent behaviours in the wild, but shyness did not. Traits in the wild were predictably influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and sunlight, but only activity showed appreciable within-individual repeatability. This suggests that some behaviours typically studied as personality traits can be accurately assayed in captivity, but the expression of others may be highly context-specific. Our results highlight the importance of validating the relevance of laboratory behavioural assays to analogous traits measured in the wild.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to analyse the effect of PLCD4, PECR, FN1 and PNKD mutations on pig productive traits and tested the usefulness of targeted enrichment DNA sequencing method as tool for preselection of genetic markers. The potential genetic markers for pig productive traits were identified by using targeted enrichment DNA sequencing of chromosome 15 region that is QTL-rich. The selected mutations were genotyped by using HRM, Sanger sequencing and PCR-ACRS methods. The association study was performed by using GLM model in SAS program and included over 500 pigs of 5 populations maintained in Poland. The variation (C/T) of PLCD4 gene affected feed conversion, intramuscular fat and water exudation. The PNKD mutations were associated with texture parameters measured after cooking. In turn, the variation rs792423408 (C/T) in the FN1 gene influenced toughness measured in semimembranosus muscle and growth traits that was observed particularly in Duroc breed. Summarizing, the investigated gene variants delivered valuable information that could be used during developing SNP microarray for genomic estimated breeding value procedure in pigs. Moreover, the study showed that the TEDNA-seq method could be used to preselect the molecular markers associated with pig traits. However, the further association study that included large number animal populations is necessary.  相似文献

Pigs are increasingly used in medical research as transgenic laboratory animals; however, little knowledge is presently available concerning their welfare assessment. The aim of the present study was to investigate some welfare-related parameters of transgenic pigs intended for xenotrasplantation (human decay-accelerating factor (hDAF)) when compared with their conventional (i.e. not transgenic) close relatives (full sibs and half sibs). A total of 14 Large White female transgenic pigs and 10 female non-transgenic (conventional) pigs from four litters were used. All pigs were from the same conventional boar, donor of the semen treated for sperm-mediated gene transfer. During the experiment, BW ranged from 50 to about 80 kg and pigs were weighed at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. Animals were subjected to a set of behavioural tests: a human approach test (HAT), a novel object test (NOT) and an open-door test (ODT). Food preferences were tested through the offer of different foods (banana, apple, carrot, cracker and lemon). During a 4-day period, pigs were diurnally videotaped to study the prevalence of the different behaviours and social interactions (aggressive and non-aggressive interactions). At the end of the trial, cortisol level had been assessed on bristles. No significant differences (P>0.05) were observed between hDAF transgenic and conventional pigs with respect to growth traits, reactivity towards unexpected situations (HAT, NOT, ODT), food preferences, main behavioural traits, social interactions and hair cortisol.  相似文献

Consumers perceive pork products from local breeds reared in extensive systems positively because of their specific quality properties and regional identity. The sensory, nutritional and technological qualities of these products depend, among other things, on pig production, especially its climatic conditions and the availability of feed resources, which can influence traits of muscle and fat tissue. The present study (part 1) was part of a larger project that assessed the influence of the finishing season and feeding resources on carcass and tissue traits and the quality of meat and dry-cured ham from Gascon pigs in an extensive system. Following the specifications of the Protected Designation of Origin “Noir de Bigorre”, castrated Gascon males were reared on rangelands (grassland and forest areas) and received a supplementary diet from 5 to 6 months of age until slaughter at a minimum of 12 months of age and ca. 170 kg live weight. Three finishing seasons were considered as follows: Winter (n = 18), Spring (n = 22) and Autumn (n = 23). To estimate specific effects of season on productive and quality traits and avoid bias due to effects of genes known to influence these traits, polymorphisms in the RYR1, PRKAG3, MC4R and LEPR genes were included in the analysis models. The finishing season did not influence growth rate. Compared to Winter pigs, Spring and Autumn pigs had slightly lower carcass fatness (P < 0.05), higher ultimate pH and redder and darker color of the Longissimus muscle (LM) (P < 0.01). Loin drip loss was low overall, but was higher for Spring pigs, whereas cooking loss and shear force were similar among seasons. Spring pigs tended to have the lowest LM lipid content, whereas LM myoglobin content remained unaffected. Autumn pigs had lower potential of lipid oxidation in LM than Winter and Spring pigs (P < 0.01), but muscle metabolic traits assessed via glycolytic and oxidative enzyme activities did not differ among seasons. The finishing season modified the backfat fatty acid (FA) profile, with a lower polyunsaturated FA percentage in Autumn pigs than Winter or Spring pigs (P < 0.001), even though the saturated and monounsaturated FA percentages did not differ. In particular, Spring pigs had the lowest n-6:n-3 and C18:2:C18:3 ratios (P < 0.001), as a result of grazing. Overall, Spring and Autumn finishing seasons seem more favorable to technological and sensory pork attributes, with an additional positive effect of Spring finishing on pork nutritional value.  相似文献

There is now abundant evidence that propagule pressure, a composite measure of the number of individuals released into the nonnative location that varies between introduction events, is the most consistent predictor of success in the establishment of exotic species. However, the reasons why we expect propagule pressure to be important – because larger propagules ameliorate the effects of demographic, environmental or genetic stochasticity, or of Allee effects – also predict an influence of species traits on success. Here, we use a quantitative meta-analytical approach to assess the effect of three categories of species-level traits in the successful establishment of nonnative bird species: traits relating to population growth rates, traits that predispose species to Allee effects, and traits that enable a species to cope with novel environments. Traits that predispose species to Allee effects tend to decrease introduction success, whereas traits that enable a species to cope with novel environments tend to increase success. The breadth of habitats a species uses has the strongest mean effect of all variables analysed here. Mean effects for traits relating to population growth rates conflict in sign: in general, success is greater for species with large body mass whereas clutch size is not consistently related to establishment success. These results suggest a likely influence of some species-level traits on exotic bird establishment success, especially traits that enable a species to cope with novel environments. We suggest that considering such traits in terms of the small-population paradigm from conservation biology may be a productive avenue for future research.  相似文献

A phenotypic matrix was established for 512 marine Vibrio species previously surveyed for plasmid incidence and characteristics. The organisms were subjected to a variety of tests to determined phenetic groups and plasmid functions. Both physiologic and plasmid function tests were used to cluster the strains by numerical taxonomy. The resulting phenotypic clusters showed an uneven distribution of plasmids. Some clusters contained isolates with no plasmids and other clusters contained isolates with a high incidence of plasmids. Traits correlating with plasmid occurrence in clusters included bioluminescence and antibiotic and heavy metal resistance. These characteristics were assumed to be either plasmid-mediated or plasmid-associated traits. Cluster analysis was found to be a successful method for relating the presence of plasmids with specific traits.  相似文献

Sujiang pigs are a synthetic breed derived from Jiangquhai, Fengjing, and Duroc pigs. In this study, we sequenced the genome of 62 pigs with a coverage depth of 10× to 20×, including 27 Sujiang and 35 founder breed pigs, and we collected 360 global pigs’ genome sequence data from public databases including 39 Duroc pigs. We obtained a high-quality variant dataset of 365 Sujiang pigs by imputing the porcine 80 K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) Beadchip to the whole-genome scale with a total of 422 pigs as a reference panel. A dataset of 365 imputated Sujiang pigs was used to perform single-trait genome-wide association study (GWAS) and meta-analyses for growth and fatness traits. Single-trait GWAS identified 1 907, 18, and 14 SNPs surpassing the suggestively significant threshold for backfat thickness, chest circumference, and chest width, respectively. Meta-analyses identified 2 400 genome-wide significant SNPs and 520 suggestively significant SNPs for backfat thickness and chest circumference, and 719 genome-wide significant SNPs and 1 225 suggestively significant SNPs for all seven traits. According to the meta-analysis of backfat thickness and chest circumference, a remarkable region of 2.69 Mb on Sus scrofa chromosome 4 containing FAM110B, IMPAD1, LYN, MOS, PENK, PLAG1, SDR16C5 and XKR4 was identified as a candidate region. The haplotype heat map of the 2.69 Mb region verified that Sujiang pigs were derived from Duroc and Chinese indigenous pigs, especially Jiangquhai pigs. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed that haplotypes of the 2.69 Mb region significantly affected backfat thickness and chest circumference traits. We then focused on PLAG1, an important growth-related gene, and identified two synonymous SNPs with obvious differences among different breeds in the PLAG1 gene. We then performed genotyping of 365 Sujiang, 150 Duroc, 95 Jiangquhai, and 100 Fengjing pigs to confirm the above result and verified that the two variants significantly affected phenotypes of growth and fatness traits. Our findings not only provide insights into the genetic architecture of porcine growth and fatness traits but also provide potential markers for selective breeding of these traits in Sujiang pigs.  相似文献

Since decades, production traits such as growth rate, feed efficiency or body composition have been drastically increased in pigs by genetic selection. Whether this selection impacted animal robustness is still unclear. In this study, we compared Large White (LW) pigs, a breed submitted to intense genetic selection for production traits, and Basque (B) pigs, a local rustic breed, reared in two different housing environments (conventional v. enriched). Adaptation to housing conditions among each breed was evaluated at the level of endocrine and immune traits. These are known to be impacted by housing conditions and breed; however, the interaction effects between genotype and environment are less described. Animals (20 per breed and housing environment) entered the experiment at 35 kg of live weight. Levels of cortisol, acute-phase inflammatory proteins, immunoglobulins and hydrogen peroxide, blood formula, lymphocyte proliferation and in-vitro cytokine expression were measured at ∼115 kg of live weight. Animals were checked for skin injuries during the growing period. At slaughter, at the average live weight of 145 kg, carcasses were examined for pathological conditions of the respiratory tract. The major result was that the two breeds exhibited differences in response to the housing environment. Among the 24 sanitary, endocrine or immune traits investigated, the housing conditions affected eight variables in both breeds (salivary cortisol at 0700 and 1900 h, severity of pneumonia at slaughter) or only in B pigs (severe skin lesions) or LW pigs (salivary cortisol at 1500 h, granulocyte numbers and lymphocyte/granulocyte ratio and lymphocyte proliferation). These observations strengthen the hypothesis that selection for high meat production level might be associated with an increased susceptibility of animals to environmental stressors.  相似文献

Breeding entire males is an alternative to surgical castration to improve their welfare. However, entire males may have a major quality defect called boar taint. Boar taint is partly due to the presence of androstenone in fat. In this study, we estimated the genetic parameters between androstenone and production traits to evaluate the consequences of selection against boar taint for traits of interest. We focused on growth traits, meat quality, lesions, hormone levels and computerised tomography measurements in purebred Piétrain (P) or Piétrain cross Large White (X) entire males. The number of measured animals varied from 670 P and 734 X for hormones concentrations to 553 P and 645 X for computerised tomography measurements. Skin lesions were measured on live pigs shortly after mixing, at the end of the fattening period, and on carcasses. Heritabilities of traits measured by tomography ranged from low to high: femur density (P: 0.34, X: 0.69), loin eye area (P: 0.53, X: 0.88) and loin eye density (P: 0.12, X: 0.18). The mean number of lesions at each stage was lower in purebred pigs than in crossbreds (entering the fattening stage 4.01 in P and 4.68 in X; before slaughter 3.72 in P and 4.22 in X; on carcass 4.50 in P and 4.96 in X). We also observed a decrease in the average number of lesions between the two stages in live pigs. We found high genetic correlations between stages in purebred pigs (0.74 to 0.76) but low correlations (−0.30 to 0.29) in crossbred pigs. Selection aiming to decrease fat androstenone is feasible (h2 = 0.57 in P and h2 = 0.71 in X). It would have overall positive effects on meat production and quality traits. Selection aiming to reduce plasma oestradiol would strongly reduce the level of fat androstenone (rg = 0.89 in P and rg = 0.84 in X). Selection against oestradiol is easier and less invasive since it would only require a blood sample rather than a fat biopsy in live animals.  相似文献

Health traits are of paramount importance for economic dairy production. Improvement in liability to diseases has been made with better management practices, but genetic aspects of health traits have received less attention. Dairy producers in Canada have been recording eight health traits (mastitis (MAST), lameness (LAME), cystic ovarian disease (COD), left displaced abomasum (LDA), ketosis (KET), metritis (MET), milk fever (MF) and retained placenta (RP)) since April 2007. Genetic analyses of these traits were carried out in this study for the Holstein breed. Edits on herd distributions of recorded diseases were applied to the data to ensure a sufficient quality of recording. Traits were analysed either individually (MAST, LAME, COD) or were grouped according to biological similarities (LDA and KET, and MET, MF and RP) and analysed with multiple-trait models. Data included 46 104 cases of any of the above diseases. Incidence ranged from 2.3% for MF to 9.7% for MAST. MET and KET also had an incidence below 4.0%. Variance components were estimated using four different sire threshold models. The differences between models resulted from the inclusion of days at risk (DAR) and a cow effect, in addition to herd, parity and sire effects. Models were compared using mean squared error statistic. Mean squared error favoured, in general, the sire and cow within sire model with regression on DAR included. Heritabilities on the liability scale were between 0.02 (MET) and 0.21 (LDA). There was a moderate, positive genetic correlation between LDA and KET (0.58), and between MET and RP (0.79).  相似文献

Background

Increasing robustness via improvement of resistance to pathogens is a major selection objective in livestock breeding. As resistance traits are difficult or impossible to measure directly, potential indirect criteria are measures of immune traits (ITs). Our underlying hypothesis is that levels of ITs with no focus on specific pathogens define an individual''s immunocompetence and thus predict response to pathogens in general. Since variation in ITs depends on genetic, environmental and probably epigenetic factors, our aim was to estimate the relative importance of genetics. In this report, we present a large genetic survey of innate and adaptive ITs in pig families bred in the same environment.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Fifty four ITs were studied on 443 Large White pigs vaccinated against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and analyzed by combining a principal component analysis (PCA) and genetic parameter estimation. ITs include specific and non specific antibodies, seric inflammatory proteins, cell subsets by hemogram and flow cytometry, ex vivo production of cytokines (IFNα, TNFα, IL6, IL8, IL12, IFNγ, IL2, IL4, IL10), phagocytosis and lymphocyte proliferation. While six ITs had heritabilities that were weak or not significantly different from zero, 18 and 30 ITs had moderate (0.10.4) heritability values, respectively. Phenotypic and genetic correlations between ITs were weak except for a few traits that mostly include cell subsets. PCA revealed no cluster of innate or adaptive ITs.

Conclusions/Significance

Our results demonstrate that variation in many innate and adaptive ITs is genetically controlled in swine, as already reported for a smaller number of traits by other laboratories. A limited redundancy of the traits was also observed confirming the high degree of complementarity between innate and adaptive ITs. Our data provide a genetic framework for choosing ITs to be included as selection criteria in multitrait selection programmes that aim to improve both production and health traits.  相似文献

Dietary methionine affects protein metabolism, lean gain and growth performance and acts in the control of oxidative stress. When supplied in large excess relative to growth requirements in diets for pigs, positive effects on pork quality traits have been recently reported. This study aimed to decipher the molecular and biochemical mechanisms affected by a dietary methionine supply above growth requirements in the loin muscle of finishing pigs. During the last 14 days before slaughter, crossbred female pigs (n = 15 pigs/diet) were fed a diet supplemented with hydroxy-methionine (Met5; 1.1% of methionine) or not (CONT, 0.22% of methionine). Blood was sampled at slaughter to assess key metabolites. At the same time, free amino acid concentrations and expression or activity levels of genes involved in protein or energy metabolism were measured in the longissimus lumborum muscle (LM). The Met5 pigs exhibited a greater activity of creatine kinase in plasma when compared with CONT pigs. The concentrations of free methionine, alpha-aminobutyric acid, anserine, 3-methyl-histidine, lysine, and proline were greater in the LM of Met5 pigs than in CONT pigs. Expression levels of genes involved in protein synthesis, protein breakdown or autophagy were only scarcely affected by the diet. Among ubiquitin ligases, MURF1, a gene known to target creatine kinase and muscle contractile proteins, and OTUD1 coding for a deubiquitinase protease, were up-regulated in the LM of Met5 pigs. A lower activity of citrate synthase, a reduced expression level of ME1 acting in lipogenesis but a higher expression of PPARD regulating energy metabolism, were also observed in the LM of Met5 pigs compared with CONT pigs. Principal component analysis revealed that expression levels of many studied genes involved in protein and energy metabolism were correlated with meat quality traits across dietary treatments, suggesting that subtle modifications in expression of those genes had cumulative effects on the regulation of processes leading to the muscle transformation into meat. In conclusion, dietary methionine supplementation beyond nutritional requirements in pigs during the last days before slaughter modified the free amino acid profile in muscle and its redox capacities, and slightly affected molecular pathways related to protein breakdown and energy metabolism. These modifications were associated with benefits on pork quality traits.  相似文献

Myopalladin (MYPN) and titin (TTN) play key roles in skeletal muscle structural organisation and for this reason they may be functional candidates for meat production traits in pigs. We analysed by PCR–RFLP two polymorphisms previously identified and described in the 3′UTR of MYPN and TTN genes in a group of Italian Large White (ILW) and Italian Duroc (ID) pigs with extreme divergent estimated breeding values for some production traits. Significant allele frequency differences were observed for lean cuts (LC) at the MYPN locus in ILW breed and for visible intermuscular fat (VIF) at MYPN and TTN loci in ID breed. Moreover, association analysis between the two genes and some production traits (average daily gain, LC, backfat thickness, ham weight, feed conversion ratio and VIF) was performed in a sample of 409 ILW and 381 ID pigs. On the whole, the results showed significant effects of both genes on some of the considered traits in ID breed, and for TTN gene in ILW animals. These results indicate that both genes can be considered as candidates for meat and carcass traits in ID pigs.  相似文献

Conversion of tropical forests into intensely managed plantations is a threat to ecosystem functions. On Sumatra, Indonesia, oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) plantations are rapidly expanding, displacing rain forests and extensively used rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) agro-forests. Here, we tested the influence of land use systems on root traits including chemical traits (carbon, nitrogen, mineral nutrients, potentially toxic elements [aluminium, iron] and performance traits (root mass, vitality, mycorrhizal colonization). Traits were measured as root community-weighed traits (RCWTs) in lowland rain forests, in rubber agro-forests mixed with rain forest trees, in rubber and oil palm plantations in two landscapes (Bukit Duabelas and Harapan, Sumatra). We hypothesized that RCWTs vary with land use system indicating increasing transformation intensity and loss of ecosystem functions. The main factors found to be related to increasing transformation intensity were declining root vitality and root sulfur, nitrogen, carbon, manganese concentrations and increasing root aluminium and iron concentrations as well as increasing spore densities of arbuscular mycorrhizas. Mycorrhizal abundance was high for arbuscular and low for ectomycorrhizas and unrelated to changes in RCWTs. The decline in RCWTs showed significant correlations with soil nitrogen, soil pH and litter carbon. Thus, our study uncovered a relationship between deteriorating root community traits and loss of ecosystem functionality and showed that increasing transformation intensity resulted in decreasing root nutrition and health. Based on these results we suggest that land management that improves root vitality may enhance the ecological functions of intense tropical production systems.  相似文献

Conventional pork production, based on highly selected breeds for growth efficiency and carcass leanness, is generally considered to decrease pork quality. In contrast, non-selected breeds produced in extensive systems are associated with high pork quality, which is generally attributed to higher intramuscular fat (IMF) content and less glycolytic muscle metabolism. The present study aimed to determine biochemical, histological and quality traits of loin and ham muscles of pigs from selected Large White (LW) and local French, non-selected Basque (B) breeds. Pigs were reared in a conventional indoor (C, slatted floor), alternative (A, indoor bedding and outdoor area) or extensive system (E, free range, B pigs only). A total of 100 castrated males were produced in 2 replicates, each containing 5 groups of 10 pigs based on breed and system: LWC, LWA, BC, BA and BE. The glycolytic longissimus muscle (LM) and semimembranosus muscle (SM), and the deep red (RSTM) and superficial white (WSTM) portions of semitendinosus muscle (STM) were studied at 145 kg BW. Overall, breed induced stronger effects on muscle traits than the rearing system, among which the E system induced greater changes. The lower muscle growth of B pigs was associated with fewer muscle fibers and a smaller cross-sectional area (CSA) of glycolytic fibers (P < 0.01). The SM was less glycolytic and more oxidative in B than in LW pigs (P < 0.001). The WSTM followed a similar trend, with a larger relative area of type I fibers in B pigs. In contrast, the LM and RSTM were more oxidative in LW pigs. B pigs had higher IMF content and ultimate pH in all muscles, along with lower glycolytic potential, less light and redder meat in the LM and SM (P < 0.001). Compared to the C system, the A system induced only a shift towards a more oxidative metabolism in the LM and a smaller fiber CSA in the RSTM of LW pigs (P < 0.05), without influencing pork quality traits. Compared to BC pigs, BE pigs had a more oxidative and less glycolytic muscle metabolism, along with higher ultimate pH, lower lightness and redder meat (P < 0.01), but similar IMF content. Overall, results indicate that influences of breed and rearing system on muscle properties depend on muscle type, and that IMF content and fiber-type composition are unrelated traits that can be modified independently by genetic or rearing factors.  相似文献

Animal personality has received increasing interest and acknowledgment within ecological research over the past two decades. However, some areas are still poorly studied and need to be developed. For instance, field studies focused on invertebrates are currently highly underrepresented in the literature. More studies including a wider variety of traits measured and species tested are needed to improve our understanding of trait‐correlation patterns and generalities. We studied nine behavioral traits, in the damselfly Calopteryx splendens, from an array of three experiments: (i) courtship, (ii) aggressiveness, and (iii) boldness, and calculated their repeatability. The behaviors were measured twice in two different contexts: (i) undisturbed territory and (ii) partially deteriorated territory. Traits related to courtship and boldness were all repeatable across the two contexts. Among aggressive behaviors, only one trait (number of hits) was repeatable. This work demonstrates, for the first time, the presence of within‐population personality differences in an adult damselfly in the wild. We further propose C. splendens as a promising model species for testing personality in the wild under highly controlled environmental conditions.  相似文献

Many common diseases are accompanied by disturbances in biochemical traits. Identifying the genetic determinants could provide novel insights into disease mechanisms and reveal avenues for developing new therapies. Here, we report a genome-wide association analysis for commonly measured serum and urine biochemical traits. As part of the WTCCC, 500,000 SNPs genome wide were genotyped in 1955 hypertensive individuals characterized for 25 serum and urine biochemical traits. For each trait, we assessed association with individual SNPs, adjusting for age, sex, and BMI. Lipid measurements were further examined in a meta-analysis of genome-wide data from a type 2 diabetes scan. The most promising associations were examined in two epidemiological cohorts. We discovered association between serum urate and SLC2A9, a glucose transporter (p = 2 x 10(-15)) and confirmed this in two independent cohorts, GRAPHIC study (p = 9 x 10(-15)) and TwinsUK (p = 8 x 10(-19)). The odds ratio for hyperuricaemia (defined as urate >0.4 mMol/l) is 1.89 (95% CI = 1.36-2.61) per copy of common allele. We also replicated many genes previously associated with serum lipids and found previously recognized association between LDL levels and SNPs close to genes encoding PSRC1 and CELSR2 (p = 1 x 10(-7)). The common allele was associated with a 6% increase in nonfasting serum LDL. This region showed increased association in the meta-analysis (p = 4 x 10(-14)). This finding provides a potential biological mechanism for the recent association of this same allele of the same SNP with increased risk of coronary disease.  相似文献

Genomic selection has proven effective for advancing genetic gain for key profit traits in dairy cattle production systems. However, its impact to-date on genetic improvement programs for beef cattle has been less effective. Despite this, the technology is thought to be particularly useful for low heritability traits such as those associated with reproductive efficiency. The objective of this study was to identify genetic variants associated with key determinants of reproductive and overall productive efficiency in beef cows. The analysis employed a large dataset derived from the national genetic evaluation program in Ireland for two of the most predominant beef breeds, viz. Charolais (n = 5 244 cows) and Limousin (n = 7 304 cows). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified as being statistically significantly associated (adj. P < 0.05) with both reproductive and productive traits for both breed types. However, there was little across breed commonality, with only two SNPs (rs110240246 and rs110344317; adj. P < 0.05) located within the genomic regions of the LCORL and MSTN genes respectively, identified in both Charolais and Limousin populations, associated with traits including carcass weight, cull-cow weight and live-weight. Significant SNPs within the MSTN gene were also associated with both reproduction and production related traits within each breed. Finally, traits including calving difficulty, calf mortality and calving interval were associated with SNPs within genomic regions comprising genes involved in cellular growth and lipid metabolism. Genetic variants identified as associated with both important reproductive efficiency and production related traits from this study warrant further analyses for their potential incorporation into breeding programmes to support the sustainability of beef cattle production.  相似文献

One of the major aims of pollination ecology has been to understand the role and relative importance of different pollinator species in both natural and agricultural systems. This study explores how the quantity of pollen delivered in a single visit to a stigma (SVD) differs across insect species from a wide range of taxa (Orders: Hymenoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera) and assesses the morphological and behavioural traits that lead to differences in pollen delivery. We used oilseed rape (OSR) (Brassica napus L.), an economically important crop with open self-fertile flowers, as a test system. Behavioural traits and SVD were measured in the field for individuals of all frequent flower-visiting species of OSR. Individuals were collected and morphological traits were measured in the laboratory. The quantities of free pollen on different body parts of flower visitors, or ‘pollen load’, were also measured. Behavioural and morphological traits were then assessed as predictors of SVD. The individuals that delivered most pollen were (in order of greatest median number of pollen grains delivered): bumblebees (Bombus spp.), mining bees (Andrenidae) and honeybees (Apis mellifera). However, all but one family of flies tested delivered a significantly greater median number of pollen grains than the control, and most delivered more than sweat bees (Halictidae). Behavioural and morphological traits were important in determining pollen delivery, with greater body length, hairiness and visit duration all resulting in greater SVD. Pollen load was measured for a proportion of individuals and we found that for momentary flower visits, a greater quantity of pollen on the head of the flower visitor was linked to a greater SVD. This study demonstrates that, while bees are important pollinators in this system, many fly taxa are also effective at delivering pollen and this is linked to morphological and behavioural traits found in both groups.  相似文献
