This paper provides a criterion to determine the age of live Pyrenean desmansGalemys pyrenaicus (E. Geoffroy, 1811) by observing dental wear. The criterion is based on the comparison of the estimated age by examining the growth rings on dental sections and the wear observed on the upper canine tooth. Bone matter from different areas in the north of Spain was studied. This species has a high life expectancy. In its natural environment, the desman may live to be over 5 years old.  相似文献

In this study, the interactions between two semi-aquatic mammals, the endangered Pyrenean desman Galemys pyrenaicus and the Eurasian water shrew Neomys fodiens, were investigated through the analysis of their summer diet using next-generation sequencing methods, combined with analyses of prey selectivity and trophic overlap. The diet of these predators was highly diverse including 194 and 205 genera for G. pyrenaicus and N. fodiens respectively. Overall, both species exhibited rather non-selective foraging strategies as the most frequently consumed invertebrates were also the most frequent and abundant in the streams. This supported a generalist foraging behaviour for G. pyrenaicus and N. fodiens in the study area. The Pianka index (0.4) indicated a significant but moderate dietary overlap as G. pyrenaicus mostly relied on prey with aquatic stages whereas prey of N. fodiens were mainly terrestrial. Moreover, no difference in G. pyrenaicus prey consumption was found in presence or absence of N. fodiens. A differential use of trophic resources through mechanisms such as plastic feeding behaviour or differences in foraging micro-habitat are likely to facilitate the coexistence between these two mammal species.  相似文献

Analysing the impact of anthropogenic and natural river barriers on the dispersal of aquatic and semi‐aquatic species may be critical for their conservation. Knowledge of kinship relationships between individuals and reconstructions of pedigrees obtained using genomic data can be extremely useful, not only for studying the social organization of animals, but also inferring contemporary dispersal and quantifying the effect of specific barriers on current connectivity. In this study, we used kinship data to analyse connectivity patterns in a small semi‐aquatic mammal, the Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus), in an area comprising two river systems with close headwaters and dams of various heights and types. Using a large SNP dataset from 70 specimens, we obtained kinship categories and reconstructed pedigrees. To quantify the barrier effect of specific obstacles, we built kinship networks and devised a method based on the assortativity coefficient, which measures the proportion between observed and expected kinship relationships across a barrier. The estimation of this parameter enabled us to infer that the most important barrier in the area was the watershed divide between the rivers, followed by a dam on one of the rivers. Other barriers did not significantly reduce the expected number of kinship relationships across them. This strategy and the information obtained with it may be crucial in determining the most important connectivity problems in an area and help develop conservation plans aimed at improving genetic exchange between populations of threatened species.  相似文献

Adult and fourth-stage larvae of Paracuaria hispanica n. sp., from the stomach of the Pyrenean desman Galemys pyrenaicus Geoffroy (Insectivora: Talpidae) in northern and central Spain, are described. The new species differs from the other members of the genus Paracuaria (P. adunca and P. soricis), among other morphological details, in its smaller body and spicule sizes, the presence of a cuticular ring around the tip of the female tail, and the existence of lateral alae running longitudinally along its body from the cervical region to the tail. In view of the latter feature, the genus Paracuaria is redefined. The fourth stage larva of the new species is distinguished from that of P. adunca by its monocuspid deirids. P. hispanica occurred in 45% of the 20 host specimens examined.  相似文献

The genetic structure of small semiaquatic animals may be influenced by dispersal across both rivers and land. The relative importance of these two modes of dispersal may vary across different species and with ecological conditions and evolutionary periods. The Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) is an endemic mammal of the Iberian Peninsula with a strong phylogeographic structure and semiaquatic habits, thus making it an ideal model to study the effects of river and overland dispersal on its genetic structure. Thanks to different types of noninvasive samples, we obtained an extensive sampling of the Pyrenean desman from the northwestern region of the Iberian Peninsula and sequenced two mitochondrial DNA fragments. We then analyzed, using an isolation‐by‐distance approach, the correlation between phylogenetic distances and geographical distances measured along both river networks and land to infer the relative importance of river and overland dispersal. We found that the correlations in the whole area and in a large basin were consistent with an effect of overland dispersal, which may be due to the postglacial colonization of new territories using terrestrial corridors and, possibly, a more extensive fluvial network that may have been present during the Holocene. However, in a small basin, likely to be less influenced by the impact of ancient postglacial dispersal, the correlations suggested significant overall effects of both overland and river dispersal, as expected for a semiaquatic mammal. Therefore, different scales and geographical regions reflect different aspects of the evolutionary history and ecology of this semiaquatic species using this isolation‐by‐distance method. The results we obtained may have crucial implications for the conservation of the Pyrenean desman because they reinforce the importance of interbasin dispersal for this species in the studied area and the need to protect the whole riverine ecosystem, including rivers, upland streams and terrestrial corridors between basins.  相似文献

We have sequenced partial fragments of DBX and DBY genes of the endangered Iberian desman (Galemys pyrenaicus). The sequences were used to design a sex determination protocol for non-invasive samples based on a PCR reaction, using only three primers. This protocol allows the simultaneous amplification of two fragments, one corresponding to the DBX gene and the other to the DBY gene, both differing in size. To increase sensitivity on the detection of positive amplifications and on the determination of fragment size we use a fluorescently labelled primer. The protocol has been tested in DNA samples from hair and stool, revealing major difficulties in sexing faecal samples, but unambiguous sexing of hair samples.  相似文献

Inferring and quantifying recent barriers to connectivity is increasingly important for conservation and management in a world undergoing rapid environmental change. Traditional measures of genetic differentiation can take many generations to reflect a new barrier to connectivity. Although methods that use the linkage disequilibrium signal in mixed genetic samples are able to reflect recent levels of gene flow, they are not suitable for use in situations with low levels of genetic differentiation. Kinship‐based methods, those that assess the spatio‐temporal distribution of related individuals, have been used in this context, but a formal statistical framework for such approaches has been lacking. In this issue of Molecular Ecology Resources, Escoda, et al. adapt the assortativity coefficient, AC, to analyse the networks of kin relationships in the Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) across potential barriers to dispersal. Their modified AC quantifies the proportion of missing kin relationships across putative dispersal barriers with respect to the expected proportion if there was no barrier. This application highlights that AC can be used to test the null hypothesis that a putative barrier has no effect on gene flow, in which case AC is not significantly different from 0. The method represents a useful step forward in conservation genomics by developing and adapting tools to assess contemporary connectivity using genomic data.  相似文献

The absence of sexual dimorphism in Pyrenean desmanGalemys pyrenaicus (E. Geoffroy, 1811) makes it difficult to sex live animals. This paper presents a method of sexing desmans observing their external genitals. Based in a sampling of 49 animals from the north of Spain, it was possible to identify the penis of males, independently of the age or season.  相似文献

The Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) is a small semi-aquatic mammal endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. The species has recently experienced a strong decline and some of its populations are severely threatened with extinction. To help in the preservation of this species, it is critical to understand its genetic structure and main evolutionary units, as these may have specific local adaptations and could be of great conservation value. Sequencing reduced representation libraries (ddRAD) from 26 specimens selected from across its entire range, we obtained around 45,000 loci per specimen and 1185 single nucleotide polymorphisms. Heterozygosity varied substantially among individuals from different areas. Interestingly, specimens from the southeastern Pyrenees had some of the lowest proportions of heterozygous positions inferred from genome-wide data in mammals so far. In addition, we estimated a tree reflecting genomic divergence, performed a principal component analysis, and carried out a Bayesian analysis of the population structure. Combined evidence supported the existence of five distinct genomic clusters largely coincident with the main mountain ranges where the species occurs, with few specimens presenting relevant admixture levels. There was good correspondence between these populations and the mitochondrial lineages detected in a previous study, yet substantial differences in some areas demonstrate the importance of performing genomic analysis to reveal the whole population history. Although the analysis of further specimens is necessary to better characterize the distribution of the different evolutionary units, the distinctive geographical structure of this species revealed by the genomic data should be considered in future conservation plans.  相似文献

Information about the degree of contemporary dispersal is important when trying to understand how populations interchange individuals and identify the specific barriers that prevent these movements. In the case of endangered species, this can represent crucial information when designing appropriate conservation strategies. Here we analyse relatedness between individuals from different localities and use these data to infer whether dispersal occurred in recent generations. We applied this approach to the Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus), a semiaquatic and endangered species endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. We studied this species in four primary rivers in the Iberian Range, where two ancient mitochondrial lineages are separated by a strict contact zone, suggesting the existence of complex dispersal patterns. Using next‐generation sequencing, we obtained 912 SNPs from each specimen and estimated relatedness values between them. While relatedness networks were dense within each river, we found surprisingly few relationships between individuals from different rivers despite their close proximity in some cases, indicating much lower dispersal between rivers compared to dispersal within a single river. In agreement with this result, the degree of inbreeding was exceedingly high in most individuals. These data show that relatedness information can be crucial to understand the contemporary dispersal patterns and conservation status of specific populations of endangered species.  相似文献

The morphology of the abdominal and pelvic arterial system was analysed in two talpid species, the common mole (Talpa europaea) and the Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus). Animals were studied by injection of coloured latex solution into the aorta by cannulation through the left ventricle of the heart, and subsequent dissection under a surgical microscope. In spite of the intra- and interspecific variation observed in the main abdominal and pelvic vessels examined, the general arrangements observed in talpids are consistent with the patterns described in other Insectivora, such as Soricinae and Crocidurinae. Interspecific morphological comparisons within the Insectivora and with representatives of other mammal orders revealed that the origin and arrangement of certain arteries, such as the renal, gonadal, caudal mesenteric, and median sacral arteries are clearly uncorrelated with function and phylogeny. Similar conclusions can be extended to the common or separate origin of the cœliac and the cranial mesenteric arteries. In contrast, other specific arterial traits can be interpreted from a functional and/or evolutionary standpoint. We discuss these implications for the following characteristics: the absence of gastroepiploic arteries; the presence of double lienal arteries and right gastric artery; the course of the cranial mesenteric artery; the presence of the ductus deferentis artery; and the origin of the cranial gluteal, deep iliac circumflex, and medial and lateral femoral circumflex arteries. Phenetic relationships among Soricomorpha were evaluated by cluster analysis. Congruence between the phenogram obtained and an accepted evolutionary hypothesis corroborates the phylogenetic significance of some arterial arrangements.  相似文献

The Pyrenean desman is considered a flagship species for biodiversity and evolution. However, its scientific knowledge is still under development and currently on debate, particularly in relation to its behavioural ecology and social organization. Based on the previous hypothesis of individual desmans being solitary and territorial, activity and space patterns were considered to be arranged to avoid conspecifics. However, recent insights into the species’ social behaviour revealed non-interspecific avoidance. With this study, we provide novel insights into the activity and space patterns of the desman, and their relation to its social behaviour. A total of 30 individuals were trapped, 18 of which provided informative radiotracking data to study (1) activity behaviour, (2) the proportion of the home range utilized and the distances travelled, and (3) the dominant movement directionality. Activity and space use patterns were affected by daylight and seasonality, but not by sex, age or number of other conspecifics sharing the home range. In contrast to the previous observations, individuals did not show a pattern of directionality in their movements. Noticeably, we observed encounters between individuals without evidence of aggressive behaviour. Our results suggest that desmans do not alter their activity or their spatial behaviour to avoid encounters with conspecifics, as previously suggested. These novel findings provide more evidence of a social structure and organization with social interactions and non-aggressive behaviour. This is of relevance for management actions and for the conservation of this endemic mammal.  相似文献

Geometric morphometrics was applied on the mandible of the Iberian desman, Galemys pyrenaicus, to determine for the first time possible sexual and post-weaning shape variation of this structure in a talpid species. Analyses were complemented by evaluating the effect of sex and age on size. The sample consisted of collection specimens from locations in the Cantabrian Mountains (northern Spain). Desmans were grouped into four relative age classes according to tooth wear. The shape of the internal side of the mandible was represented by 15 two-dimensional landmarks. Once young desmans leave the nest there is no significant variation in the form (size and shape) of the mandible. Thus, possible osseous changes and tooth abrasion derived from ageing do not produce obvious variation in mandible form. Mandible shape was significantly correlated with mandible size, resulting in a range of shapes that varies from a slender to a robust morphology. This variation was independent of geographic factors. Since the effect of non-heritable environmental influences on mandible size and shape was negligible, it can be considered that the mandible form of post-weaned desmans is the direct product of interactions between different developmental processes.  相似文献

Socioecological models suggest competition for food, foraging efficiency, predation, infanticide risk, and the costs of dispersal regulate primate social structure and organization. Wild populations of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.) appear to conform to the predictions of the predation/competition socioecological model (Sterck et al. in Behav Ecol Sociobiol 41:291–309, 1997) and the dispersal/foraging efficiency model (Isbell in Kinship and behavior in primates. Oxford University, New York, pp 71–108, 2004). However, squirrel monkeys in captivity are reported to maintain patterns of social behavior observed in their wild conspecifics despite different food distribution, predation risk, and dispersal options. This behavioral similarity suggests squirrel monkeys’ social behavior has limited flexibility to respond to environmental changes. In this study, we experimentally evaluated the flexibility of social behavior within a captive group of S. sciureus. First, we determined whether dominance and affiliative relationships observed under normal laboratory conditions (with abundant, widely distributed, food; no dispersal option; and no predators) better matched published reports of relationships among wild conspecifics or the predictions of the predation/competition model. Second, we made preferred food items defensible to determine whether dominance interactions would become more frequent and linear, as predicted by the model. The model correctly predicted rates of dominance behavior in both conditions and a linear hierarchy in the defensible food condition but did not predict the consistent affiliative relationships and linear dominance hierarchy observed in normal lab conditions. Although hierarchies were linear and male dominant, manipulating food distribution changed the dominant individual within each sex. Our findings suggest interaction rates adapt more rapidly than social structure to environmental changes in Saimiri and recommend caution in interpreting tests of socioecological models.  相似文献

Background

Climate change is already affecting the distributions of many species and may lead to numerous extinctions over the next century. Small-range species are likely to be a special concern, but the extent to which they are sensitive to climate is currently unclear. Species distribution modeling, if carefully implemented, can be used to assess climate sensitivity and potential climate change impacts, even for rare and cryptic species.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We used species distribution modeling to assess the climate sensitivity, climate change risks and conservation implications for a threatened small-range mammal species, the Iberian desman (Galemys pyrenaicus), which is a phylogenetically isolated insectivore endemic to south-western Europe. Atlas data on the distribution of G. pyrenaicus was linked to data on climate, topography and human impact using two species distribution modeling algorithms to test hypotheses on the factors that determine the range for this species. Predictive models were developed and projected onto climate scenarios for 2070–2099 to assess climate change risks and conservation possibilities. Mean summer temperature and water balance appeared to be the main factors influencing the distribution of G. pyrenaicus. Climate change was predicted to result in significant reductions of the species'' range. However, the severity of these reductions was highly dependent on which predictor was the most important limiting factor. Notably, if mean summer temperature is the main range determinant, G. pyrenaicus is at risk of near total extinction in Spain under the most severe climate change scenario. The range projections for Europe indicate that assisted migration may be a possible long-term conservation strategy for G. pyrenaicus in the face of global warming.

Conclusions/Significance

Climate change clearly poses a severe threat to this illustrative endemic species. Our findings confirm that endemic species can be highly vulnerable to a warming climate and highlight the fact that assisted migration has potential as a conservation strategy for species threatened by climate change.  相似文献

Colony social organization in the fire ant Solenopsis invicta appears to be under strong genetic control. In the invasive USA range, polygyny (multiple queens per colony) is marked by the presence of the Gp-9 b allele in most of a colony’s workers, whereas monogyny (single queen per colony) is associated with the exclusive occurrence of the Gp-9 B allele. Ross and Keller, Behav Ecol Sociobiol 51:287–295 (2002) experimentally manipulated social organization by cross-fostering queens into colonies of the alternate form, thereby changing adult worker Gp-9 genotype frequencies over time. Although these authors showed that social behavior switched predictably when the frequency of b-bearing adult workers crossed a threshold of 5–10%, the possibility that queen effects caused the conversions could not be excluded entirely. We addressed this problem by fostering polygyne brood into queenright monogyne colonies. All such treatment colonies switched social organization to become polygyne, coincident with their proportions of b-bearing workers exceeding 12%. Our results support the conclusion that polygyny in S. invicta is induced by a minimum frequency of colony workers carrying the b allele, and further confirm that its expression is independent of queen genotype or history, worker genotypes at genes not linked to Gp-9, and colony genetic diversity.  相似文献

We conducted field studies of ferret badgersMelogale moschata (Gray, 1831) during March–November 1994 and May–July 1996 at Taohong Village in southeastern China. Capture data suggested that they gave birth in May, and telemetry data on 11 individuals indicated that they were nocturnal. Size of resting home ranges (daybed locations only;n ≥ 20 re-locations) of 6 individuals averaged 11 ha (range 1–25 ha) and no sex-specific differences in size were detected. Distances between daily resting sites averaged 101 m, but ferret badgers often (51% of occasions) returned to sites used the previous day. Ferret badgers readily used a variety of shelters as daybeds, including rodent dens (47%), firewood stacks (20%), open fields (17%), and rock piles (5%) around houses.  相似文献

A competitive learning model was introduced in Mehta and Luck (Phys Rev E 60, 5:5218–5230, 1999), in which the learning is outcome-related. Every individual chooses between a pair of existing strategies or types, guided by a combination of two factors: tendency to conform to the local majority, and a preference for the type with higher perceived success among its neighbors, based on their relative outcomes. Here, an extension of the interfacial model of Mehta and Luck (Phys Rev E 60, 5:5218–5230, 1999) is proposed, in which individuals additionally take into account their own outcomes in arriving at their outcome-based choices. Three possible update rules for handling bulk sites are considered. The corresponding phase diagrams, obtained at coexistence, show systematic departures from the original interfacial model. Possible relationships of these variants with the cooperative model of Mehta and Luck (Phys Rev E 60, 5:5218–5230, 1999) are also touched upon.  相似文献

We have identified multiple alleles for a single gene termed W14/15. This gene encodes closely related but not identical proteins W14 and W15 that accumulate in overwinter buds of Gentiana triflora (Takahashi et al. in Breed Sci 56:39–46, 2006; Hikage et al. in Mol Genet Genomics 278:95–104, 2007). In this study, structural analysis of the W14/15 gene was carried out for 21 different gentian lines/cultivars consisting of 5 different species, to survey species- or line/cultivar-specific haplotypes. Within the samples examined, multiple variant forms were found. Those were categorized into seven major types (type I–VII) and ten subtypes based on the presence of three short insertion/deletion sites, three RFLP sites, and several SNP sites. Each line/cultivar had a distinct set of W14/15 gene variants for an allelic pair. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the W14/15 alleles cluster into groups that are characteristic of gentian species, i.e., G. triflora, G. scabra, G. pneumonanthe, G. septemfida and an unknown species other than the former four. In addition, within the same gentian species, different sets of haplotypes were found. Thus, the W14/15 alleles provide useful landmarks to resolve phylogenies of the genus or section Gentiana, as well as to analyze pedigree and breeding history of the cultivars derived from those Gentiana sp.  相似文献

We investigate the role of heterogeneous expression of IP3R and RyR in generating diverse elementary Ca2+ signals. It has been shown empirically (Wojcikiewicz and Luo in Mol. Pharmacol. 53(4):656–662, 1998; Newton et al. in J. Biol. Chem. 269(46):28613–28619, 1994; Smedt et al. in Biochem. J. 322(Pt. 2):575–583, 1997) that tissues express various proportions of IP3 and RyR isoforms and this expression is dynamically regulated (Parrington et al. in Dev. Biol. 203(2):451–461, 1998; Fissore et al. in Biol. Reprod. 60(1):49–57, 1999; Tovey et al. in J. Cell Sci. 114(Pt. 22):3979–3989, 2001). Although many previous theoretical studies have investigated the dynamics of localized calcium release sites (Swillens et al. in Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 96(24):13750–13755, 1999; Shuai and Jung in Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 100(2):506–510, 2003a; Shuai and Jung in Phys. Rev. E, Stat. Nonlinear Soft Matter Phys. 67(3 Pt. 1):031905, 2003b; Thul and Falcke in Biophys. J. 86(5):2660–2673, 2004; DeRemigio and Smith in Cell Calcium 38(2):73–86, 2005; Nguyen et al. in Bull. Math. Biol. 67(3):393–432, 2005), so far all such studies focused on release sites consisting of identical channel types. We have extended an existing mathematical model (Nguyen et al. in Bull. Math. Biol. 67(3):393–432, 2005) to release sites with two (or more) receptor types, each with its distinct channel kinetics. Mathematically, the release site is represented by a transition probability matrix for a collection of nonidentical stochastically gating channels coupled through a shared Ca2+ domain. We demonstrate that under certain conditions a previously defined mean-field approximation of the coupling strength does not accurately reproduce the release site dynamics. We develop a novel approximation and establish that its performance in these instances is superior. We use this mathematical framework to study the effect of heterogeneity in the Ca2+-regulation of two colocalized channel types on the release site dynamics. We consider release sites consisting of channels with both Ca2+-activation and inactivation (“four-state channels”) and channels with Ca2+-activation only (“two-state channels”) and show that for the appropriate parameter values, synchronous channel openings within a release site with any proportion of two-state to four-state channels are possible, however, the larger the proportion of two-state channels, the more sensitive the dynamics are to the exact spatial positioning of the channels and the distance between channels. Specifically, the clustering of even a small number of two-state channels interferes with puff/spark termination and increases puff durations or leads to a tonic response.  相似文献
