This study assessed changes in biomass, filament length, and cell morphology in Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz. along a suspended sediment gradient in the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona. Suspended sediments ranged from 2.0 mg·L−1 at Lees Ferry (Rkm 0.8) to 4.2 mg·L−1 at Gorilla Island (Rkm 352). There was a 74% decrease in Cladophora biomass along the river transect through Grand Canyon National Park and a significant decrease in filament and cell length, but cell width increased. Similar changes in cell morphology occurred after 19 days when C. glomerata was transplanted from a low suspended sediment site (2.0 mg·L−1) at Lees Ferry to a habitat with high suspended sediments (≥20.0 mg·L−1). Cell length increased and cell width decreased when plants were transplanted back to the low suspended sediment habitat for 24 days. In situ studies with reduced light in the absence of suspended sediments showed no change in cell morphology. These in situ experiments imply that changes in cell morphology by C. glomerata in waters with high suspended sediments are adjustments in structural integrity to accommodate the abrasive force of suspended particles. Our study suggests that cell dimensions in Cladophora might be too plastic under varying environmental conditions to be used in taxonomic determinations.  相似文献

The winter desiccation of needles is thought to limit tree growth and survival within alpine timberline ecotones of the southern Rocky Mountains, USA. To better understand the factors contributing to this desiccation damage, the extent to which stem water was available to needles of Picea engelmannii undergoing desiccation at timberline near Monarch Pass, Colorado, was monitored throughout the winter. Severed shoots experienced significantly greater desiccation than did intact shoots, indicating the availability of stem water to needles despite presumably frozen soil, roots, and stems. A model of water relations during winter predicted more extreme desiccation of severed shoots than observed. This suggests that one or more of the common assumptions concerning the winter water relations of timberline trees is in error. The influence of cold, dry conditions on the cuticular conductance of Picea engelmannii needles is not known and therefore not accounted for in current models of winter water relations. The assumption that cuticular conductance is not influenced by temperature or humidity is a likely source of error in such models.  相似文献

Species invasions are often associated with large-scale human alteration of ecosystems. One classic example is the increasing dominance of non-native taxa below and above dams on large rivers. These dams substantially alter the physical template of river ecosystems, and exotic taxa often proliferate with potentially large impacts on coexisting taxa and ecosystem processes. Here we document the invasion of New Zealand mud snails (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) in the Colorado River directly below Lake Powell in Glen Canyon, Arizona, USA. We also quantified the magnitude and variability in growth and secondary production of P. antipodarum during 2006–2007 to gain a functional measure of their role in the ecosystem. Snails were first detected in Glen Canyon in 1995, and have since become a dominant component of the invertebrate fauna. Throughout the invasion of P. antipodarum, biomass of other dominant taxa was variable and did not appear to be positively or negatively influenced by the presence of P. antipodarum. Specific growth rates of P. antipodarum were moderate (0.001–0.030 day−1) and strongly related to body size. Mean annual habitat-weighted biomass and production were relatively high (biomass: 4.4 g/m2; secondary production: 13.3 g m−2 year−1) and similar among habitats. Mean monthly biomass and daily secondary production were much more variable, with highest values occurring in autumn. We show that invasion of a productive aquatic consumer to a highly disturbed river ecosystem had little detectable influence on the biomass of other invertebrate taxa. However, additional research will be necessary to fully understand and predict effects of P. antipodarum on coexisting taxa.  相似文献

The attack rate of a population of the braconid parasitoid Cotesia glomerata, introduced into the USA over 100 years ago as a parasitoid of Pieris rapae, was compared with that of a native British population, which normally attacks P. brassicae, and with that of a P. rapae specialist, Cotesia rubecula. British C. glomerata attacked P. brassicae at a much higher rate than it attacked P. rapae. In comparison with British C. glomerata, C. rubecula showed a higher attack rate with P. rapae. American C. glomerata attacked P. rapae at a slightly higher rate than did British C. glomerata, but not at as high a rate as that achieved by C. rubecula. The differences in each comparison were statistically significant. The possible causes of the differences between British and American C. glomerata attacking P. rapae are discussed. They may be due to genetic or environmental effects. Egg load did not appear to be a factor limiting the number of hosts parasitized under the conditions of the experiments.  相似文献

Two tetraploid subspecies of Dactylis glomerata L., subsp. reichenbachii (Hausm.) Stebbins et Zohary and subsp. glomerata , occur in the French Alps. The former is confined to dolomitic, south-facing, alpine lawns above 2000 m, whereas the latter occurs in non-dolomitic habitats in subalpine meadows mainly below 1900 m. Previous studies of allozyme variation have shown that genetic introgression between the two subspecies occurs over large areas. By contrast, morphologically intermediate individuals only occur in an extremely narrow area, suggesting that the morphological and physiological differences between the two subspecies is of adaptive significance. A reciprocal clone transplant experiment was set up to examine (1) any genetic differences between subspecies indicative of ecotypic differentiation in relation to habitat characteristics and (2) the level of phenotypic plasticity in the two subspecies. Genetic differentiation was confirmed by a statistically significant taxon × site interaction effect in anova for all traits studied. The glomerata populations produced more tillers, longer leaves and higher culms in all sites, especially in their home environment. However, reichenbachii populations produced more seeds than the glomerata populations in the original reichenbachii environment, suggesting ecotypic differentiation between the two subspecies. This result might also explain why the glomerata subspecies is unable to colonize dolomitic habitats occupied by the reichenbachii subspecies. The reichenbachii populations showed less plasticity than the glomerata populations for leaf length and floriferous tiller number, a result which is discussed in the context of the response of plants from productive and non-productive habitats to environmental variation.  相似文献

Scorpions successfully inhabit some of the most arid habitats on earth. During exposure to desiccating stress water is mobilized from the scorpion hepatopancreas to replenish the hemolymph and retain hydration and osmotic stability. Carbohydrate catabolism is advantageous under these conditions as it results in high metabolic water production rate, as well as the release of glycogen-bound water. Hypothesizing that metabolic fuel utilization in scorpions is regulated in order to boost body water management under stressful conditions we used a comparative approach, studying energy metabolism during prolonged desiccation in four species varying in resistance performance. We used respirometry for calculating respiratory gas exchange ratios, indicative of metabolic fuel utilization, and measured metabolic fuel contents in the scorpion hepatopancreas. We found that hydrated scorpions used a mixture of metabolic fuels (respiratory exchange rates, RER~0.9), but a shift towards carbohydrate catabolism was common during prolonged desiccation stress. Furthermore, the timing of metabolic shift to exclusive carbohydrate oxidation (RER not different from 1.0) was correlated with desiccation resistance of the respective studied species, suggesting triggering by alterations to hemolymph homeostasis.  相似文献

Transitions from fresh to saline habitats are restricted to a handful of insect lineages, as the colonization of saline waters requires specialized mechanisms to deal with osmotic stress. Previous studies have suggested that tolerance to salinity and desiccation could be mechanistically and evolutionarily linked, but the temporal sequence of these adaptations is not well established for individual lineages. We combined molecular, physiological and ecological data to explore the evolution of desiccation resistance, hyporegulation ability (i.e., the ability to osmoregulate in hyperosmotic media) and habitat transitions in the water beetle genus Enochrus subgenus Lumetus (Hydrophilidae). We tested whether enhanced desiccation resistance evolved before increases in hyporegulation ability or vice versa, or whether the two mechanisms evolved in parallel. The most recent ancestor of Lumetus was inferred to have high desiccation resistance and moderate hyporegulation ability. There were repeated shifts between habitats with differing levels of salinity in the radiation of the group, those to the most saline habitats generally occurring more rapidly than those to less saline ones. Significant and accelerated changes in hyporegulation ability evolved in parallel with smaller and more progressive increases in desiccation resistance across the phylogeny, associated with the colonization of meso‐ and hypersaline waters during global aridification events. All species with high hyporegulation ability were also desiccation‐resistant, but not vice versa. Overall, results are consistent with the hypothesis that desiccation resistance mechanisms evolved first and provided the physiological basis for the development of hyporegulation ability, allowing these insects to colonize and diversify across meso‐ and hypersaline habitats.  相似文献

Oscillatoria spp. are generally very abundant in many shallow,eutrophic lakes in the Netherlands. However, this is less truefor Daphnia galeata. The main aim of this study was to investigatewhether the edibility of live Oscillatoria limnetica by Daphniagaleata, and of the detritus derived from this filamentous cyanobacterium,was, among others, an important limiting factor for the daphnids.We measured the consumption and assimilation rates of Daphniausing dual-labelling radio-tracer techniques (14C and 32P) tolabel separately the live Oscillatoria filaments and detritusprepared from these filaments. The two food types were mixedin different proportions, and both the food ingestion and foodincorporation rates by daphnids were measured. The main findingsof this study were that specific clearance rates of Daphniaon shorter Oscillatoria filaments were significantly higherthan on the longer filaments, in other words the weight-specificingestion rates were higher on the shorter Oscillatoria filamentsthan on the longer filaments from the batch cultures. The longerOscillatoria filaments are more likely to clump and, therefore,are more liable to be rejected by Daphnia during the food collectionand ingestion processes. The shorter filaments, in comparison,are apparently less prone to clumping and, therefore, are clearedby the daphnids at higher rates than the longer filaments. Feedingthe daphnids on double-labelled (14C and 32P) shorter filamentsrevealed that the assimilationefficiency of shorter Oscillatoriafilaments was generally higher for P than for C, probably becauseof a high C/P ratio of Oscillatoria. Daphnia (0.75–1.85mm in size) fed significantly better on dead (detritus) Oscillatoriafilaments than on live Oscillatoria filaments, even if the relativeproportion of detritus in the food was only about one-quarterthat of the live filaments. This preference for detritus overlive Oscillatoria, as indicated by Chesson's selectivity coefficienta, was apparently a passive process, rather than a case of activefood selection. This ‘selective’ feeding on detrituswas apparently facilitated by the relatively greater rejectionof the live filaments than the detrital filaments. At very highfood concentrations (15–25 mg C l–1), with the shareof the live Oscillatoria filaments 2 to 2.5 times greater thanthat of the detritus, the ingestion rates increased proportionallyless with increase in daphnid size than was expected on thebasis of the allometric relationship between the length andweight of these animals. This implies that the larger animalshad greater interfering effects of the Oscillatoria filamentson the food collection and ingestion processes.  相似文献

1. Cladophora glomerata is the dominant filamentous green alga in the tailwaters of the Colorado River, U.S.A., below Glen Canyon Dam, but becomes co-dominant with filamentous cyanobacteria, Oscillatoria spp., below the confluence of the Paria River (26km below the dam) where suspended sediments are elevated. 2. Benthic algal assemblages played an important role in the distribution of the amphipod, Gammarus lacustris, in the dam-controlled Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. Cladophara and G. lacustris showed a weak positive relationship at ten cobble-riffle habitats in the Colorado River from Lees Ferry (25km below the dam) to Diamond Creek (362km downstream), while no relationship was found between Oscillatoria and G. lacustris. 3. The relationship between algal substrata and G. lacustris was tested by a series of in situ habitat choice experiments. G. lacustris showed a significant preference for Cladophora (with epiphytes) over Oscillatoria spp., detritus and gravel in treatment pans at Lees Ferry. 4. Epiphytic diatoms (i.e. food) were the overriding determinant of subtratum choice by G. lacustris in laboratory experiments. Gammarus chose the Cladophora/epiphytic diatom community over sonicated Cladophora with few diatoms. The amphipods also chose string soaked in diatom extract over string without diatom extract. 5. Importance of mutualistic interactions in aquatic benthic community structure is discussed.  相似文献

Energy availability can limit the ability of organisms to survive under stressful conditions. In Drosophila, laboratory experiments have revealed that energy storage patterns differ between populations selected for desiccation and starvation. This suggests that flies may use different sources of energy when exposed to these stresses, but the actual substrates used have not been examined. We measured lipid, carbohydrate, and protein content in 16 Drosophila species from arid and mesic habitats. In five species, we measured the rate at which each substrate was metabolized under starvation or desiccation stress. Rates of lipid and protein metabolism were similar during starvation and desiccation, but carbohydrate metabolism was several-fold higher during desiccation. Thus, total energy consumption was lower in starved flies than desiccated ones. Cactophilic Drosophila did not have greater initial amounts of reserves than mesic species, but may have lower metabolic rates that contribute to stress resistance.  相似文献

Sin Nombre virus (SNV) is an etiologic agent of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. To better understand the natural history of this virus we studied population dynamics and temporal pattern of infection of its rodent hosts in southeastern Colorado (USA) from 1995 to 2000. We present evidence for the presence of two hantaviruses, SNV in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) and El Moro Canyon virus in western harvest mice (Reithrodontomys megalotis), at our study sites. Sin Nombre virus appeared only sporadically in deer mouse populations; overall prevalence of antibody to SNV was 2.6%. El Moro Canyon virus was enzootic: seroconversions occurred throughout the year; antibody prevalence (11.9% overall) showed a delayed-density-dependent pattern, peaking as relative abundance of mice was declining. Males of both host species were more frequently infected than were females. An apparently lower mean survivorship (persistence at the trapping site) for SNV antibody-positive deer mice could indicate a detrimental effect of SNV on its host, but might also be explained by the fact that antibody-positive mice were older when first captured.  相似文献

1. Trade-offs between competitive ability and tolerance of abiotic stress are widespread in the literature. Thus, condition-specific competition may explain spatial variability in the success of some biological invaders and why, in environments where there is small-scale environmental variability, competitively inferior and superior species can coexist. 2. We tested the hypothesis that differences in abiotic stress alter the outcome of competitive interactions between the native Sydney rock oysters Saccostrea glomerata and exotic Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas by experimentally testing patterns of intra- and interspecific competition across a tidal elevation gradient of abiotic stress at three sites on the east coast of Australia. 3. At low and mid-intertidal heights, exotic C. gigas were able to rapidly overgrow and smother native S. glomerata, which grew at c. 60% of the exotic's rate. In high intertidal areas, where C. gigas displayed about 80% mortality but similar growth rates to S. glomerata, the native oyster was not affected by the presence of the exotic species. 4. Asymmetrical effects of the exotic species on the native could not be replicated by manipulating densities of conspecifics, confirming that effects at low and mid-intertidal heights were due to interspecific competition. 5. Our results suggest that the more rapid growth of C. gigas than S. glomerata comes at the cost of higher mortality under conditions of abiotic stress. Thus, although C. gigas may rapidly overgrow S. glomerata at low and mid tidal heights, the native oyster will not be competitively excluded by the exotic due to release from competition at high intertidal elevations. 6. The success of trade-offs in explaining spatial variation in the outcome of competitive interactions between C. gigas and S. glomerata strengthen the claim that these may be a useful tool in the quest to produce general predictive models of invasion success.  相似文献

Fynbos Proteaceae that are killed by fire and bear their seeds in serotinous cones (proteoids), are entirely dependent on seedling recruitment for persistence. Hence, the regeneration phase represents a vulnerable stage of the plant life cycle. In laboratory-based experiments we investigated the effect of desiccation on the survival of newly emerged seedlings of 23 proteoid species (Leucadendron and Protea) occurring in a wide variety of fynbos habitats. We tested the hypothesis that species of drier habitats would be more tolerant of desiccation than those from more moist areas. Results showed that with no desiccation treatment, or with desiccation prior to radicle emergence, all species germinated to high levels. However, with desiccation treatments imposed after radicle emergence, there were significant declines in seedling emergence after subsequent re-wetting. Furthermore, other than three species that grow in waterlogged habitats, germination responses could not be reliably modeled as a function of soil moisture variables. An important finding was that the species had highly individualistic responses to desiccation. In conclusion, early seedling emergence represents a species-specific stage that is highly sensitive to a decrease in soil moisture. Since species are killed by fire (non-sprouting), vulnerability to increasing aridity associated with anthropomorphic climate change would increase the odds of local and global extinction.  相似文献

We examined short- and long-term desiccation tolerance of 31 strains of thermophilic and hyperthermophilic Archaea and thermophilic phylogenetically deep-branching Bacteria. Seventeen organisms showed a significant high ability to withstand desiccation. The desiccation tolerance turned out to be species-specific and was influenced by several parameters such as storage temperature, pH, substrate or presence of oxygen. All organisms showed a higher survival rate at low storage temperatures (−20°C or below) than at room temperature. Anaerobic and microaerophilic strains are influenced negatively in their survival by the presence of oxygen during desiccation and storage. The desiccation tolerance of Sulfolobales strains is co-influenced by the pH and the substrate of the pre-culture. The distribution of desiccation tolerance in the phylogenetic tree of life is not domain specific. Surprisingly, there are dramatic differences in desiccation tolerance among organisms from the same order and even from closely related strains of the same genus. Our results show that tolerance of vegetative cells to desiccation is a common phenomenon of thermophilic and hyperthermophilic microorganisms although they originated from quite different non-arid habitats like boiling acidic springs or black smoker chimneys.  相似文献

Some parasitoid wasps appear to control the behaviour of their hosts. However, altered behaviours of parasitised hosts are not necessarily caused by parasitoids but are sometimes the result of traumatic side effects of parasitism. However, it was difficult for us to discriminate the cause of host's behaviours between manipulation by parasitoids and traumatic side effects. Larvae of the parasitoid wasp Cotesia glomerata form cocoon clusters after egression from the parasitised host caterpillar Pieris brassicae . Following parasitoid egression, host caterpillars survive for several days and remain near the cocoon clusters. These caterpillars may repel solitary pteromalid hyperparasitoid wasps, Trichomalopsis apanteloctena , that attempt to parasitise fresh C. glomerata pupae. We allowed hyperparasitoids to attack cocoon clusters in the field and laboratory and then assessed the costs and benefits to C. glomerata of attachment by the parasitised caterpillars. The eclosion success of C. glomerata in cocoon clusters with attached caterpillars was higher than that in clusters without attached caterpillars in both field and laboratory experiments. This difference was attributed to shorter hyperparasitoid visits to cocoon clusters with attached host caterpillars. However, large cluster size was potentially costly for host attachment, because the duration of host caterpillar attachment decreased with increasing numbers of C. glomerata per caterpillar. This trade-off may be related to shortages of fat body resources, which are shared between the development of wasp larvae and the survival of host caterpillars. Therefore, we concluded that caterpillar attachment satisfied some requirements of host manipulation by C. glomerata .  相似文献

The morphologically unique and endangered humpback chub, Gila cypha, is found in canyon-bound reaches of the Colorado River and its tributaries. Now limited to six isolated reproducing populations, this species is believed to have been once distributed over a large portion of the mainstem river. Because the species inhabits remote canyon areas, little is known about its spawning ecology. The largest remaining population occurs in the lower Little Colorado River (LCR) near Grand Canyon, where we conducted a three-year study of spawning ecology during spring (March-June) 1993–1995. We analyzed seasonal patterns of movement, population density, relative condition, spawning scores, and frequency of ripe condition and fin abrasions and compared these data with seasonal discharge and water temperature to determine spawning phenology and ecology. Spawning commenced in late March, peaked in mid-April, and waned in mid-May. A high proportion of males remained ripe over this period, whereas ripe females were relatively abundant only in April. Increased densities of adult fish in March-April and rapid declines in May-June coupled with recaptures of 18.4% of these adults in the Colorado River suggest that a portion of the population migrated from the Colorado River into the LCR to spawn and then returned. Ripe males aggregated in areas of complex habitat structure with high angular variation in bottom profiles (matrix of large boulders, travertine masses combined with chutes, runs and eddies, 0.5–2.0 m deep) and were associated with deposits of clean gravel. Ripe females appeared to move to these male aggregations to spawn. Near-spawning (including gravid) females and non-spawning fish used similar habitats and were segregated but close (< 50 m) to habitats occupied by aggregations of ripe males. Abrasions on anal and lower caudal fins of males and females suggest that spawning involves contact with gravel substrates, where semi-adhesive eggs are deposited and fertilized. The findings of this study should aid recovery efforts for humpback chub by identifying spawning habitat within the historic distributional range where additional spawning stocks could be established.  相似文献

Predators are often more sensitive to habitat size than their prey and frequently occur in only the largest habitats. Four explanations have been proposed for this pattern: (a) Small habitats do not have enough energy to support higher trophic levels; (b) small habitats are less likely to contain particular prey required by specialist predators; (c) small habitats are risky for predators with slow life histories or large body sizes; and (d) small habitats are numerically unlikely to be colonized by regionally rare species, such as predators. We critically examine these four hypotheses in relation to the predatory damselfly larva, Mecistogaster modesta Selys. (Pseudostigmatidae), which occurs almost exclusively in bromeliads > 100ml in capacity. We synthesize multiple years of survey data and three manipulative experiments from the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica, to conclude that damselflies do not occur in small bromeliads due to their higher risk of desiccation—not because of energetic limitation, trophic specialization, risk of terrestrial predation, or pure numerical effects. These results suggest that recent and predicted declines in precipitation in northwestern Costa Rica may further restrict bromeliad occupancy by damselflies, with cascading consequences for the rest of the aquatic food web.  相似文献

Haberlea rhodopensis plants, growing under low irradiance in their natural habitat, were desiccated to air-dry state at a similar light intensity (about 30 μmol m−2 s−1) under optimal (23/20°C, day/night) or high (38/30°C) temperature. Dehydration of plants at high temperature increased the rate of water loss threefold and had a more detrimental effect than either drought or high temperature alone. Water deficit decreased the photochemical activity of PSII and PSI and the rate of photosynthetic oxygen evolution, and these effects were stronger when desiccation was carried out at 38°C. Some reduction in the amount of the main PSI and PSII proteins was observed especially in severely desiccated Haberlea leaves. The results clearly showed that desiccation of the homoiochlorophyllous poikilohydric plant Haberlea rhodopensis at high temperature had more damaging effects than desiccation at optimal temperature and in addition recovery was slower. Increased thermal energy dissipation together with higher proline and carotenoid content in the course of desiccation at 38°C compared to desiccation at 23°C probably helped in overcoming the stress.  相似文献

Dam removal is a potentially powerful tool for restoring riverine habitats and communities. However, the effectiveness of this tool is unknown because published data on the effects of dam removal on in-stream biota are lacking. We investigated the effects of a small dam removal on unionid mussels in Koshkonong Creek, Wisconsin (USA). Removal of the dam led to mortality both within the former impoundment and in downstream reaches. Within the former reservoir, mortality rates were extremely high (95&p e r c n t;) due to desiccation and exposure. Mussel densities in a bed 0.5km downstream from the dam declined from 3.80±0.56 musselsm?2 in fall 2000 immediately after dam removal to 2.60±0.48 musselsm?2 by summer 2003. One rare species, Quadrula pustulosa, was lost from community. Mortality of mussels buried in deposited silt was also observed at a site 1.7km below the dam. Silt and sand increased from 16.8 and 1.1% of total area sampled in fall 2000 to 30.4 and 15.9%, respectively, in summer 2003. Total suspended sediment concentrations in the water column were always higher downstream from the reservoir than upstream, suggesting that transport and deposition of reservoir sediments likely contributed to downstream mussel mortality. Thus, while benefits of the dam removal included fish passage and restoration of lotic habitats in the former millpond, these changes were brought about at some cost to the local mussel community. Pre-removal assessments of potential ecological impacts of dam removal and appropriate mitigation efforts should be included in the dam removal process to reduce short-term negative ecological effects of this restoration action.  相似文献

Pithophora oedogonia and Cladophora glomerata survived lowest 60 and 58%, respectively, in June when the pond diurnal water temperature (PDWT) increased to a maximum of 28 degrees C. The lowering of PDWT only by 1 degrees C in July improved survivability of both algae to their almost maximum level of 100 and 96%, respectively. Further lowering of PDWT to 17-22 degrees C in November initiated akinete formation in P. oedogonia. The process of akinete initiation, maturation and germination continued till April when PDWT increased to 20-24 degrees C, but not beyond that in May when PDWT was 21-26 degrees C. By this time, probably all akinetes have germinated in situ, and the alga was entirely vegetative. P. oedogonia population is not synchronous in nature, since during the 5-6-month reproductive season, some filaments were in active vegetative stage, some had akinete initiation, some had completed akinete formation, and some had akinetes germinating. C. glomerata grew dense vegetative in November and initiated (zoo)sporangial primordia formation (to some extent) in February (when PDWT was lowest, viz. 10-14 degrees C) till April. Meanwhile, no (zoo)-sporangial primordia either produced any zoospore or germinated into a germ tube; and all released their cytoplasmic content and died (along with some vegetative cells) with an increase in PDWT to 21-26 degrees C in May. Vaucheria geminata vegetative patches appeared on the soil surface, 2nd week of January by lowering of atmospheric diurnal temperature (ADT) to 9-16 degrees C in the 1st week. The alga started sexual reproduction by the 2nd week of March (when ADT increased to 20-23 degrees C) and completed the process of reproduction by the 1st week of April (when ADT increased to 24-26 degrees C) and died thereafter. P. oedogonia, C. glomerata and V. geminata survived better and longer in submerged conditions than air-exposed (which was true for P. oedogonia and C. glomerata aquatic habitat and also indicated that the soil alga V. geminata could survive to some extent if submerged in rain water). P. oedogonia formed akinetes and C. glomerata (zoo)sporangial primordia only in submerged condition and not when air-exposed on moist soil surface. V. geminata did not complete the life cycle both under submerged and air-exposed conditions. Vegetative survival in P. oedogonia, C. glomerata, V. geminata, Aphanothece pallida, Gloeocapsa atrata, Scytonema millei, Myxosarcina burmensis, Phormidium bohneri, Oscillatoria animalis, O. subbrevis, Lyngbya birgei, L. major, Microcoleus chthonoplastes and Rhizoclonium crassipellitum, reproduction in P. oedogonia, C. glomerata and V. geminata, cell division in A. pallida and G. atrata, heterocyst and false branch formation in S. millei, all, were adversely affected at approximately 28.5 degrees C for t12 h at light intensity of approximately 160 micromol m(-2) s(-1); high intensity does not ameliorate high temperature damage to any algae. The presence of liquid water, than its absence, outside the different algae moderated the severity of heat to some extent but not when the heat was severe.  相似文献
