Acclimation of light sensitivity of hydraulic conductance of shoots of silver birch (Betula pendula) and hybrid aspen (Populus × wettsteinii) to growth environments with three different air humidities was studied. Hydraulic conductance of shoots kept for 1–2 h in darkness (D) or in light (L) was measured by the pressure chamber method, and light sensitivity was defined as a significant difference between D and L shoots. Light sensitivity of shoots grown in three different air humidities was found to vary. Amongst shoots grown in current natural air, only the hydraulic conductance of the whole shoot and that of the leaf blades of birch upper foliage were significantly light sensitive. Amongst shoots grown in decreased air humidity, hydraulic conductance of the whole shoot, the leaf blades, and the stem and petioles of birch upper foliage, the conductance of the whole shoot and the leaf blades of birch lower foliage, and the conductance of the whole shoot of aspen upper foliage were light sensitive. None of the shoots grown in increased air humidity were significantly light sensitive. We predict that light sensitivity will become more widespread among species in regions where air humidity decreases as a result of global climate change, and vice versa. Low white light always caused the same increase in hydraulic conductance as high white light, and blue and white light always caused an increase in conductance about two times greater than red light, indicating that growth environment did not markedly modify the mechanism of light sensitivity.  相似文献

Variation in leaf and shoot hydraulic conductance was examined on detached shoots of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth), cut from the lower third (shade leaves) and upper third of the crown (sun leaves) of large trees growing in a natural temperate forest stand. Hydraulic conductances of whole shoots (K S), leaf blades (K lb), petioles (K P) and branches (i.e. leafless stem; K B) were determined by water perfusion using a high-pressure flow meter in quasi-steady state mode. The shoots were exposed to irradiance of photosynthetic photon flux density of 200–250 μmol m−2 s−1, using different light sources. K lb depended significantly (P < 0.001) on light quality, canopy position and leaf blade area (A L). K lb increased from crown base to tree top, in parallel with vertical patterns of A L. However, the analysis of data on shade and sun leaves separately revealed an opposite trend: the bigger the A L the higher K lb. Leaf anatomical study of birch saplings revealed that this trend is attributable to enhanced vascular development with increasing leaf area. Hydraulic traits (K S, K B, K lb) of sun shoots were well co-ordinated and more strongly correlated with characteristics of shoot size than those of shade shoots, reflecting their greater evaporative load and need for stricter adjustment of hydraulic capacity with shoot size. K S increased with increasing xylem cross-sectional area to leaf area ratio (Huber value; P < 0.01), suggesting a preferential investment in water-conducting tissue (sapwood) relative to transpiring tissue (leaves), and most likely contributing to the functional stability of the hydraulic system, essential for fast-growing pioneer species.  相似文献

Structural and hydraulic correlates of heterophylly in Ginkgo biloba   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study investigates the functional significance of heterophylly in Ginkgo biloba, where leaves borne on short shoots are ontogenetically distinct from those on long shoots. Short shoots are compact, with minimal internodal elongation; their leaves are supplied with water through mature branches. Long shoots extend the canopy and have significant internodal elongation; their expanding leaves receive water from a shoot that is itself maturing. Morphology, stomatal traits, hydraulic architecture, Huber values, water transport efficiency, in situ gas exchange and laboratory-based steady-state hydraulic conductance were examined for each leaf type. Both structure and physiology differed markedly between the two leaf types. Short-shoot leaves were thinner and had higher vein density, lower stomatal pore index, smaller bundle sheath extensions and lower hydraulic conductance than long-shoot leaves. Long shoots had lower xylem area:leaf area ratios than short shoots during leaf expansion, but this ratio was reversed at shoot maturity. Long-shoot leaves had higher rates of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration than short-shoot leaves. We propose that structural differences between the two G. biloba leaf types reflect greater hydraulic limitation of long-shoot leaves during expansion. In turn, differences in physiological performance of short- and long-shoot leaves correspond to their distinct ontogeny and architecture.  相似文献

The impact of xylem cavitation and embolism on leaf (K leaf) and stem (K stem) hydraulic conductance was measured in current-year shoots of Cercis siliquastrum L. (Judas tree) using the vacuum chamber technique. K stem decreased at leaf water potentials (ΨL) lower than ?1.0 MPa, while K leaf started to decrease only at ΨL L K leaf changes. Field measurements of leaf conductance to water vapour (g L) and ΨL showed that stomata closed when ΨL decreased below the ΨL threshold inducing loss of hydraulic conductance in the leaf. The partitioning of hydraulic resistances within shoots and leaves was measured using the high-pressure flow meter method. The ratio of leaf to shoot hydraulic resistance was about 0.8, suggesting that stem cavitation had a limited impact on whole shoot hydraulic conductance. We suggest that stomatal aperture may be regulated by the cavitation-induced reduction of hydraulic conductance of the soil-to-leaf water pathway which, in turn, strongly depends on the hydraulic architecture of the plant and, in particular, on leaf hydraulics.  相似文献

Leaf veins undergo cavitation at water potentials (Psi(leaf)) commonly experienced by field-growing plants. Theoretically, embolism reversal should not be possible until xylem pressures rise by several kilopascals of atmospheric pressure, but recent evidence suggests that embolized conduits can be refilled even when surrounded by others at substantial tension (novel refilling). The present study reports 'novel refilling' occurring in leaf veins of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) while at Psi(leaf) = -0.33 MPa. Sixty per cent loss of vein hydraulic conductance (K(vein)) was recorded at Psi(leaf) < -0.65 MPa, while stem hydraulic conductance (K(stem)) was unaffected even at Psi(leaf) = -1.1 MPa. Loss of K(vein) was accompanied by stomatal closure. Water-stressed plants (Psi(leaf) = -1.1 MPa) were rehydrated overnight to different target water potentials achieved by using PEG at different concentrations as irrigation medium. K(vein) recovered by 50% at Psi(leaf) = -0.47 MPa and vein refilling was complete at Psi(leaf) = -0.33 MPa, i.e. well below the theoretical limit for conduit refilling (-0.05 MPa as calculated for sunflower minor veins). Mercurials supplied to detached leaves had no effect on the refilling process. Upon rehydration, recovery of K(vein) was not paralleled by recovery of whole-plant hydraulic conductance or leaf conductance to water vapour (g(L)), as a likely consequence of hydraulic failure of other components of the water pathway (root system or extravascular leaf compartments) and/or root-to-leaf chemical signalling. This is the first study providing experimental evidence for 'novel refilling' in a herbaceous dicot and highlighting the importance of this process in the leaf.

Ethephon, (2-chloroethyl)phosphonic acid, was sprayed at concentrations up to 69.2 millimolar to enhance gum formation in 1-year-old shoots of mature Prunus cerasus L. cv Montmorency trees. Gum accumulation caused rupturing of the shoot periderm, followed by gum extrusion. Lower ethephon concentrations were required to induce gum formation in spring and early summer (1.7-3.5 millimolar) then in late summer and fall (13.8-69.2 millimolar). The number of functional vessels, shoot hydraulic conductance, and water potential of both leaf and internode tissue decreased as gum content of shoots increased. Nontreated control shoots also contained small quantities of gum. There was no difference in neutral sugar composition of gum exuded by the tree, obtained from aqueous shoot extracts, or flushed from the vessels of shoots, whether induced by ethephon or not. Severe decrease in shoot and leaf water potential was associated with shoot die-back. Recovery of xylem function may occur where gummosis is less severe. Discrepancy between measured and predicted hydraulic conductance increased as shoot gum content increased, suggesting that decrease in number of functional vessels alone was not sufficient to explain the effects of gum on loss of shoot hydraulic conductance. Increased gum content in those vessels remaining functional would increase vessel sap viscosity and further reduce hydraulic conductance. The viscosities necessary to account for discrepancy between measured and predicted hydraulic conductance were calculated. Gum concentration less than 1.0% (w/v) would produce these viscosities.  相似文献

Variation in vulnerability to xylem cavitation was measured within individual organs of Populus balsamifera L. and Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. Cavitation was quantified by three different techniques: (a) measuring acoustic emissions, (b) measuring loss of hydraulic conductance while air-dehydrating a branch, and (c) measuring loss of hydraulic conductance as a function of positive air pressure injected into the xylem. All of these techniques gave similar results. In Populus, petioles were more resistant than branches, and branches were more resistant than roots. This corresponded to the pattern of vessel width: maximum vessel diameter in 1- to 2-year-old roots was 140 [mu]m, compared to 65 and 45 [mu]m in rapidly growing 1-year-old shoots and petioles, respectively. Cavitation in Populus petioles started at a threshold water potential of -1.1 MPa. The lowest leaf water potential observed was -0.9 MPa. In Alnus, there was no relationship between vessel diameter and the cavitation response of a plant organ. Although conduits were narrower in petioles than in branches, petioles were more vulnerable to cavitation. Cavitation in petioles was detected when water potential fell below -1.2 MPa. This value equaled midday leaf water potential in late June. As in Populus, roots were the most vulnerable organ. The significance of different cavitation thresholds in individual plant organs is discussed.  相似文献

Hydraulic vulnerability of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) branchlets decreases with height, allowing shoots at greater height to maintain hydraulic conductance (K shoot) at more negative leaf water potentials (Psi l). To determine the basis for this trend shoot hydraulic and tracheid anatomical properties of foliage from the tops of Douglas-fir trees were analysed along a height gradient from 5 to 55 m. Values of Psi l at which K shoot was substantially reduced, declined with height by 0.012 Mpa m(-1). Maximum K shoot was reduced by 0.082 mmol m(-2) MPa(-1) s(-1) for every 1 m increase in height. Total tracheid lumen area per needle cross-section, hydraulic mean diameter of leaf tracheid lumens, total number of tracheids per needle cross-section and leaf tracheid length decreased with height by 18.4 microm(2) m(-1), 0.029 microm m(-1), 0.42 m(-1) and 5.3 microm m(-1), respectively. Tracheid thickness-to-span ratio (tw/b)2 increased with height by 1.04 x 10(-3) m(-1) and pit number per tracheid decreased with height by 0.07 m(-1). Leaf anatomical adjustments that enhanced the ability to cope with vertical gradients of increasing xylem tension were attained at the expense of reduced water transport capacity and efficiency, possibly contributing to height-related decline in growth of Douglas fir.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aimed at clarifying how the water potential gradient (deltapsi) is maintained in the shoots of evergreen trees with expanding leaves, whose leaf water potentials at the turgor loss point (psi(tlp)) are generally high. MATERIALS: The water relations were examined in current-year expanding (CEX) and 1-year-old (OLD) leaves on the same shoots in temperate (Osaka, Japan) and tropical (Bogor, Indonesia) areas. A temperate evergreen species, Quercus glauca growing in both sites, was compared with a temperate deciduous species, Q. serrata, in Osaka, and two tropical evergreen species, Q. gemelliflora and Q. subsericea, in Bogor. KEY RESULTS: (1) In Osaka, the midday leaf water potential (psi(midday)) was slightly higher in OLD (-0.5 MPa) than in CEX leaves (-0.6 MPa), whereas psi(tlp) was significantly lower in OLD (-2.9 MPa) than in CEX leaves (-1.0 MPa). In Bogor, psi(midday) was also higher in OLD leaves (-1.0 MPa) despite the low psi(tlp) (-1.9 MPa), although stomatal conductance was not always low in OLD leaves. In the branch bearing CEX and OLD leaves, most of the hydraulic resistance (86 %) exists in the current-year branch, leading to differences in water supply between CEX and OLD leaves. The removal of buds just before breaking did not affect the high psi(midday) in OLD leaves after 1 month. Psi(midday) in OLD leaves thus appears to be independent of that in CEX leaves. CONCLUSIONS: The moderate decrease in psi(midday) in OLD leaves would contribute to maintenance of deltapsi in the shoots during leaf expansion.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Light extinction through crowns of canopy trees determines light availability at lower levels within forests. The goal of this paper is the exploration of foliage distribution and light extinction in crowns of five canopy tree species in relation to their shoot architecture, leaf traits (mean leaf angle, life span, photosynthetic characteristics) and successional status (from pioneers to persistent). METHODS: Light extinction was examined at three hierarchical levels of foliage organization, the whole crown, the outermost canopy and the individual shoots, in a tropical moist forest with direct canopy access with a tower crane. Photon flux density and cumulative leaf area index (LAI) were measured at intervals of 0.25-1 m along multiple vertical transects through three to five mature tree crowns of each species to estimate light extinction coefficients (K). RESULTS: Cecropia longipes, a pioneer species with the shortest leaf life span, had crown LAI <0.5. Among the remaining four species, crown LAI ranged from 2 to 8, and species with orthotropic terminal shoots exhibited lower light extinction coefficients (0.35) than those with plagiotropic shoots (0.53-0.80). Within each type, later successional species exhibited greater maximum LAI and total light extinction. A dense layer of leaves at the outermost crown of a late successional species resulted in an average light extinction of 61% within 0.5 m from the surface. In late successional species, leaf position within individual shoots does not predict the light availability at the individual leaf surface, which may explain their slow decline of photosynthetic capacity with leaf age and weak differentiation of sun and shade leaves. CONCLUSION: Later-successional tree crowns, especially those with orthotropic branches, exhibit lower light extinction coefficients, but greater total LAI and total light extinction, which contribute to their efficient use of light and competitive dominance.  相似文献

Responses of leaf and shoot hydraulic conductance to light quality were examined on shoots of silver birch (Betula pendula), cut from lower (‘shade position’) and upper thirds of the crowns (‘sun position’) of trees growing in a natural temperate forest stand. Hydraulic conductances of leaf blades (Klb), petioles (KP) and branches (i.e. leafless stem; KB) were determined using a high pressure flow meter in steady state mode. The shoots were exposed to photosynthetic photon flux density of 200–250 µmol m?2 s?1 using white, blue or red light. Klb depended significantly on both light quality and canopy position (P < 0.001), KB on canopy position (P < 0.001) and exposure time (P = 0.014), and none of the three factors had effect on KP. The highest values of Klb were recorded under the blue light (3.63 and 3.13 × 10?4 kg m?2 MPa?1 s?1 for the sun and shade leaves, respectively), intermediate values under white light (3.37 and 2.46 × 10?4 kg m?2 MPa?1 s?1, respectively) and lowest values under red light (2.83 and 2.02 × 10?4 kg m?2 MPa?1 s?1, respectively). Light quality has an important impact on leaf hydraulic properties, independently of light intensity or of total light energy, and the specific light receptors involved in this response require identification. Given that natural canopy shade depletes blue and red light, Klb may be decreased both by reduced fluence and shifts in light spectra, indicating the need for studies of the natural heterogeneity of Klb within and under canopies, and its impacts on gas exchange.  相似文献

Dual effect of light on flowering and sprouting of rose shoots   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Shade, caused by a dense leaf canopy in the light conditions of a normal greenhouse, reduced sprouting of the third axillary bud (from the top) on decapitated rose branches ( Rosa hybrida cv. Marimba) in comparison to less shaded buds on branches protruding above the canopy and sparsely spaced. Flowering of the third young shoot on shaded branches bearing 3 lateral shoots was totally inhibited. Mixed fluorescent and incandescent light in a growth chamber reduced sprouting of the third bud on decapitated rose branches in comparison to decapitated branches on rose plants held in fluorescent light of similar photon flux density. This was attributed to the higher R:FR ratio in fluorescent vs mixed light that reached the third bud, and in exposed vs shaded branches. Flowering of the third shoot was promoted by several factors: high photon flux density, 0.5 m M gibberellic acid (GA) or 0.2 m M benzyladenine (BA). BA was the most effective treatment. Treatments promoting flowering of the third shoot did not reduce growth or flowering of the upper shoots. However, spraying the uppermost shoot with BA suppressed the growth of the shoots below. It is concluded that light affects flowering in two ways. The effect on bud sprouting is related mainly to R:FR ratios, while the effect on flower development is related mainly to photon flux density. Cytokinins may substitute for the light effect on flower development.  相似文献

Main resistances of the plant water transport system are situated in leaves. In contrast to angiosperm leaves, knowledge of conifer needle hydraulics and of the partitioning of resistances within needles is poor. A new technique was developed which enabled flow-meter measurements through needles embedded in paraffin and thus quantification of the specific hydraulic conductivity (K(s)) of the needle xylem. In Picea abies, xylem K(s) of needle and axes as well as in needles of different age were compared. In Pinus mugo, resistance partitioning within needles was estimated by measurements of xylem K(s) and leaf conductance (K(leaf), measured via 'rehydration kinetics'). Mean K(s) in P. abies needles was 3.5×10(-4) m(2) s(-1) MPa(-1) with a decrease in older needles, and over all similar to K(s) of corresponding axes xylem. In needles of P. mugo, K(s) was 0.9×10(-4) m(2) s(-1) MPa(-1), and 24% of total needle resistance was situated in the xylem. The results indicate species-specific differences in the hydraulic efficiency of conifer needle xylem. The vascular section of the water transport system is a minor but relevant resistance in needles.  相似文献

We compared soil-to-leaf hydraulic conductance (G T), hydraulic conductivity and water-relations characteristics of leaves between reiterated axes (produced by sprouting of suppressed buds) and sequential axes (produced by elongation of terminal buds) on the same branch to investigate how basal reiteration affected the hydraulic architecture of mature Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Sieb. trees. Given similar light conditions, G T was higher for leaves on reiterated shoots than for those on sequential shoots. However, where leaves on sequential shoots received more light, G T was similar to that of leaves on reiterated shoots, suggesting that some compensatory mechanism worked to increase hydraulic conductance to the more distal sequential shoots, which have higher potential for carbon gain. Both xylem- and leaf-specific conductivities were higher for reiterated than sequential shoots. Pressure–volume measurements indicated that leaves on reiterated shoots were more vulnerable to water stress, suggesting that they developed under favorable water status. Because basal reiteration occurs on lower-order branch axes, reiterated shoots have better connectivity to higher conducting xylem and this may contribute to favorable water status. As trees grow larger, hydraulic pathlength and hydraulic resistance both increase as numbers of branch junctions and nodes increase. Our results suggest that basal reiteration improves the hydraulic functional status of mature C. camphora trees by shortening the hydraulic pathway and increasing hydraulic conductance to transpiring leaves.  相似文献

Using the heat pulse and other techniques, the hydraulic architecture of apricot trees was mapped out. The flows (overall flow, flow across the four main branches) and forces (water potential differences between xylem and leaves) measured allowed us to quantify hydraulic conductance of branches and of the root/soil resistance. The experiment was carried out in a commercial orchard of 11-year-old apricot trees (Prunus armeniaca L., cv. Búlida, on Real Fino apricot rootstock) during 1 week (October 27–November 3, 1998). Three representative trees with a cylindrical trunk divided into four main branches of different sizes, orientation and local microclimate were chosen for the experiment. Sap flow was measured throughout the experimental period. Twelve sets of heat-pulse probes were used, one for each main branch. The diurnal course of the environmental conditions, the fraction of the area irradiated and leaf water relations were also considered in each main branch. The relationships between leaf water potential, xylem water potential and transpiration were established for different branches and also for the total plant. Using the slopes of these regressions, total plant conductance, the hydraulic conductance of the stem and root pathway, the hydraulic conductance of the canopy and the hydraulic conductance of each branch were estimated. Our findings show that the root conductance and the canopy hydraulic conductance are similar in magnitude. Leaf hydraulic conductance per leaf area unit was similar for each of the four branch orientations, indicating that, while the light microclimate has a dominant influence on transpiration, in this case it had little effect on the hydraulic properties of the canopy.  相似文献

* In the apple tree (Malus domestica), shoot architecture - the distribution of lateral bud types and growth along the parent shoot - has been extensively investigated. The distal zone of a shoot is characterized by a high proportion of vegetative or floral axillary branches mixed with latent buds and aborted laterals. The hypothesis tested here was that bud development was related to hydraulic conductance of the sap pathway to the bud, independently of an acrotonic (proximal vs distal) effect. * The distal zone of 1-yr-old shoots was studied on five cultivars for bud size and composition (number of appendages) and hydraulic conductance before bud burst. * Bud size, composition and hydraulic conductance were highly variable for all cultivars. A positive correlation was demonstrated between both the number of cataphylls and green-leaf primordia, and hydraulic conductance. Cultivar and bud size affected the intercept of these relationships more than the slope, suggesting similar scaling between these variables, but different hydraulic efficiencies. A great proportion of small buds were also characterized by null values of hydraulic conductance. * This study suggests that hydraulically mediated competition exists between adjacent buds within the same branching zone, prefiguring the variability of lateral types in the following growing season. It is hypothesized that this developmental patterning is driven by hydraulic characteristics of the whole metamer, including the subtending leaf, during bud development.  相似文献

The leaf is a hydraulic bottleneck, accounting for a large part of plant resistance. Thus, the leaf hydraulic conductance (K(leaf) ) is of key importance in determining stomatal conductance (g(s) ) and rates of gas exchange. Previous studies showed that K(leaf) is dynamic with leaf water status and irradiance. For four species, we tested the combined impacts of these factors on K(leaf) and on g(s) . We determined responses of K(leaf) and g(s) to declining leaf water potential (Ψ(leaf) ) under low and high irradiance (<6 and >900 μmol photons m(-2) s(-1) photosynthetically active radiation, respectively). We hypothesized greater K(leaf) vulnerability under high irradiance. We also hypothesized that K(leaf) and g(s) would be similar in their responses to either light or dehydration: similar light-responses of K(leaf) and g(s) would stabilize Ψ(leaf) across irradiances for leaves transpiring at a given vapour pressure deficit, and similar dehydration responses would arise from the control of stomata by Ψ(leaf) or a correlated signal. For all four species, the K(leaf) light response declined from full hydration to turgor loss point. The K(leaf) and g(s) differed strongly in their light- and dehydration responses, supporting optimization of hydraulic transport across irradiances, and semi-independent, flexible regulation of liquid and vapour phase water transport with leaf water status.  相似文献

The impact of water deficit on stomatal conductance (g(s)), petiole hydraulic conductance (K(petiole)), and vulnerability to cavitation (PLC, percentage loss of hydraulic conductivity) in leaf petioles has been observed on field-grown vines (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Chasselas). Petioles were highly vulnerable to cavitation, with a 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity at a stem xylem water potential (Ψ(x)) of -0.95?MPa, and up to 90% loss of conductivity at a Ψ(x) of -1.5?MPa. K(petiole) described a daily cycle, decreasing during the day as water stress and evapotranspiration increased, then rising again in the early evening up to the previous morning's K(petiole) levels. In water-stressed vines, PLC increased sharply during the daytime and reached maximum values (70-90%) in the middle of the afternoon. Embolism repair occurred in petioles from the end of the day through the night. Indeed, PLC decreased in darkness in water-stressed vines. PLC variation in irrigated plants showed the same tendency, but with a smaller amplitude. The Chasselas cultivar appears to develop hydraulic segmentation, in which petiole cavitation plays an important role as a 'hydraulic fuse', thereby limiting leaf transpiration and the propagation of embolism and preserving the integrity of other organs (shoots and roots) during water stress. In the present study, progressive stomatal closure responded to a decrease in K(petiole) and an increase in cavitation events. Almost total closure of stomata (90%) was measured when PLC in petioles reached >90%.  相似文献

Canopies of heterophyllous trees expand by production of long shoots. We have previously shown in mountain birch ( Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii ) that damage to internode leaves within long shoots does not impede shoot growth, indicating that long-shoot elongation occurs by means of external resources. To study to what extent leaves other than true long-shoot leaves are necessary for the normal growth of mountain birch long shoots, we simulated herbivore damage to the two basal leaves of shoots (which flush simultaneously with short-shoot leaves) and the short-shoot leaves nearest to the long shoot within the branch. Damage to the two basal long-shoot leaves significantly reduced long-shoot growth. Additional damage to short-shoot leaves, situated proximally to the long shoot, did not retard long-shoot growth any more than damage to basal leaves alone. To determine the extent to which short-shoot leaves within a large branch are responsible for the pooled long-shoot production of the branch, we clipped differing proportions of short-shoot leaves from such branches. We found small but significant reduction in the pooled length of the long shoots of the branch, presumably indicating a limited role in long-shoot elongation of current photosynthates within the branch. Our experiments indicate that long shoots are not independent modular units in their carbon economy.  相似文献
