Four approaches were used to assess the effect ofinundation on methane emissions from floodplainwetlands in Victoria, Australia: (i) fieldobservations following natural rainfall events; (ii)experimental manipulation of water levels in smallfloodplain depressions; (iii) experimentalmanipulation of water levels in replicated mesocosms;and (iv) in vitro incubation of floodplainsediment under laboratory conditions. Raftery'sSwamp, a large (150 ha) wetland on the floodplain ofthe Goulburn River, became inundated in June 1993following autumn-winter rainfall. Methane emissionspeaked (1.7 ± 0.05 mmol m-2 h-1) somesix months later, and the methane content of sedimentgas bubbles reached 59% v/v, even though the positivesediment redox potentials (176 to 243 mV) indicatedthat sediments were only moderately reducing. Threesmall (< 1 ha) depressions on the floodplains of theRiver Murray and Kiewa River were inundated eithernaturally (by rain and/or overflow from nearby rivers)or artificially by flooding at specific times of year;emissions from these sites were usually negligibleafter flooding in autumn or winter. In contrast, theonset of methane emission was very rapid (within 3 to6 days) after the depressions had been flooded insummer, and the methane content of sediment gasbubbles could then reach 36% v/v. At their peak,emissions from the ephemeral wetlands were similar topeak emissions from permanent wetlands insouth-eastern Australia. Emissions from replicatedwetland mesocosms (4.5 m diameter, 0.9 m deep) werealways very small (<0.2 mmol m-2 h-1),regardless of time of flooding, water depths, orseason. In vitro incubation of wetland sedimentunder anaerobic conditions indicated a progressivedecrease in benthic methanogenesis with sedimentdesiccation and exposure to air. Ephemerallyinundated floodplain wetlands may be sites ofsignificant methane emission, especially over thesummer months. Moreover, the survival and rapidreactivation of methanogenic archaea after prolongeddrying of wetland sediments suggests thatmethanogenesis is possible even from re-wettedfloodplain environments that had earlier experiencedan extended dry phase.  相似文献

Iron can stimulate cyanobacterial growth. Determining iron availability to cyanobacteria is therefore essential for timely warnings of bloom development. The objectives of this study were to determine the key spectral parameters indicating cellular iron status in cyanobacteria and to establish reliable equations for estimating iron nutrition in cyanobacterial cells. Cells, pigments, cellular iron, and spectra of cyanobacteria were measured monthly at 17 sites in Meiliang Bay of Taihu Lake during the summer period of cyanobacterial blooms from 2010 to 2013. Pronounced spatial and temporal variability of cellular iron of cyanobacteria was observed. The previously developed structure-insensitive pigment index (SIPI) and plant senescence reflectance index (PSRI) and the newly proposed chlorophyll a/phycocyanin index (RChl/PC) exhibited strong relationships with cyanobacterial cellular iron content. The relationships between the cellular iron concentration and SIPI, PSRI and RChl/PC could be expressed as linear, quadratic and cubic functions, respectively. The equations derived herein were tested using independent data from 2008 to 2009, obtained from 31 sites within Taihu Lake. For the three models that included SIPI, PSRI and RChl/PC as predictors, the coefficients of determination (R2) between the measured and estimated cellular iron concentration were 0.549, 0.584 and 0.909, and the mean relative errors (RE) were 17.1%, 18.1% and 8.0%, respectively. The overall results indicated that use of the three key hyperspectral parameters, SIPI, PSRI and RChl/PC, could be used for non-destructive and real-time monitoring of the iron nutritional status of cyanobacteria-dominant algal blooms in eutrophic lakes.  相似文献

An environmental reconstruction of the last 10,000 14C years of a frequently flooded wetland ecosystem in the lower Magdalena valley in northern Colombia is presented, on the basis of a multi-disciplinary study of the sediments of the upper 15 m of the core from Boquillas (74°33'E, 9°7'N; 20 m a. s. l.). We used the following studies: pollen, lithology, organic structures, clay mineralogy, soil and sediment geochemistry, and δ13C values. The chronology is based on 13 AMS radiocarbon dates; the humic acid fractions were used in the case of seven samples. Pollen from local origin (swamps, open grass-rich vegetation, and gallery forest) show the development of the wetland area. River-transported pollen from a greater distance (dry forest, montane forest, Alnus) show changes in river activity and reflect large-scale changes of climatic conditions in the Momposina basin. From c. 10,010 to 9370 uncal B. P. (zone BQS-Ia) the river system was of high energy, as inferred by the lithological changes. The landscape was dominated by open grass-rich vegetation with gallery forest along the streams. A marked representation of Alnus and montane forest taxa indicate significant water transport and river dynamics. Climatic conditions were dry. From c. 9370-8430 uncal B. P. (zone BQS-Ib) wetlands were isolated from the main river system, and clayey sediments with kaolinite, smectite and illite as the main minerals accumulated in a lower-energy environment. Climatic conditions were dry and changes in the seasonal precipitation favoured the expansion of the gallery forest. From c. 8430 to 8040 uncal B. P. (zone BQS-Ic) low values of river-transported pollen indicate dry climatic conditions and open vegetation became more abundant. The flooding frequency of the Boquillas site diminished. From 8040 to 4900 uncal B. P. (zone BQS-Id) the Boquillas site was dominated by open vegetation with patches of gallery forest along the streams. Supply of river-transported allochthonous pollen (from many sources) was minimal. Clay minerals from the sediments suggest variable temperature and precipitation. From c. 4900 to 1550 uncal B. P. )zone BQS-II) the site was within the reach of the main river system as is the case today. Frequent flooding, coinciding with peaks of river-transported grains of Alnus and high sediment supply, point to high precipitation in the composite catchment area of the Magdalena, Cauca, San Jorge, and Cesár rivers. High values of phosphorous in the upper part of the core point to the presence of a pre-Hispanic civilization, approximately from 2000 uncal B. P. onward. Construction of an extensive drainage system allowed irrigation as well as drainage depending the annual cycle of precipitation. Temperature data are presented from the littoral zones of two lakes in North Wales, Llyn Coron and Llyn Dinas. Recording, mainly on a continuous basis, was over a two year period. Despite their different situations, the lakes had similar temperature regimes. Regional weather factors were of greater importance than local variations. However, some differences were present, especially during the summer months. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the temperature relationships of Nemoura avicularis Morton (Plecoptera) and Leptophlebia vespertina (L.) (Ephemeroptera), common species in Llyn Dinas but absent from Llyn Coron. Aspects considered included nymphal temperature tolerance and the effect of temperature on egg development and emergence. From the background of the results, it was concluded that the differences in temperature regime between the two lakes were insufficient to explain the absence of the two species from Llyn Coron.  相似文献

Inland aquatic ecosystems play a critical role in the global carbon cycle, processing a great fraction of the organic matter coming from terrestrial ecosystems, and the microbial food web is crucial in this process. Thus, we aimed to evaluate whether the food resource of planktonic protozoa comes mainly from small primary producers or heterotrophic bacteria in tropical shallows lakes, assuming the hypothesis that, in general, picocyanobacteria would be the main food resource for protists. We also expected that the autotrophic fraction would be mainly related to protists at the surface of the environments, while the heterotrophic fraction would be more important at the lower strata of the water column. We performed size-fractionation experiments to evaluate the effects of predation of protists on heterotrophic bacteria and picocyanobacteria. We also sampled planktonic organisms at the subsurface and bottom of 20 lakes in a Neotropical floodplain. We found an herbivory preference of heterotrophic flagellates, while ciliates seem to exert a stronger impact on heterotrophic bacteria. We also found no relationship between heterotrophic bacteria and protists in the field data, whereas positive relationships between picocyanobacteria and protists were observed in environments where there was sunlight. Thus, both heterotrophic bacteria and picocyanobacteria were important components in the food webs of tropical shallow lakes. Moreover, the trophic cascade caused by zooplankton predation suggests that protists are efficient in transferring the energy from the base of microbial food webs to higher trophic levels.  相似文献

Floodplain lakes along the lower River Murray are subject to a wide range of human impacts including regulation, abstraction, elevated saline groundwater tables, increased nutrient and sediment fluxes and introduced biota. These perturbations are superimposed on those arising from high inter-annual rainfall variability, driven, at least in part, by variations in the southern oscillation. Sediment-based archives from two lakes within a complex of wetlands, situated near to the first site of irrigation development in the lower River Murray, reveal substantial changes over the last 800 years. While high levels of salinity are not foreign to the sites, the recent trend is towards sustained high salinity levels. As a result of European impact, freshwater diatom plankton now dominates Loch Luna, whilst Loveday Wetland is both more saline and nutrient rich than in the pre-European period. In Loveday Wetland, the post-1960 increase in Haslea spicula (Hickie) Lange-Bertalot, may be driven by increases in sulphur salt concentrations that are believed to be a cause of recent acidification episodes. A recent increase in more salt tolerant diatoms in Loch Luna suggests that this site, which has been largely buffered from substantial change, is becoming more vulnerable to perturbation. Synopsis A comparison of a suite of morphometric measurements and meristic counts of individuals of two landlocked lacustrine and two diadromous riverine populations of Galaxias truttaceus was carried out utilising both univariate and canonical variate analyses. Lacustrine fish had fewer dorsal and anal fin rays than did riverine fish. Differences were not as clear for gill rakers and vertebrae. Comparisons of serial counts were made with two derived lacustrine species, G. auratus and G. tanycephalus, also from Tasmania. Lacustrine G. truttaceus varied in the same direction as the derived species, relative to riverine G. truttaceus. From an analysis of 12 body measurements, the first canonical variate clearly separated lacustrine fish from riverine fish largely based on measurements associated with fins (pre-anal fin length, length of anal base, pre-dorsal fin length, maximum length of dorsal fin and inter-orbital width). An overall value for the correct classification of fish into groups based on locality was 84%. The percentage of fish classified into the wrong habitat (lake or stream) was much less than the percentage classified between localities within habitats. Overall morphological variation was greater between than within habitats. It is suggested that the differences in water movement and food type may in part account for the differences shown and that selective pressures peculiar to the lacustrine environment may be causing the lake populations to diverge from the riverine populations.  相似文献

A hydrogeochemical study conducted in the southern Wimmera of western Victoria, south-eastern Australia reveals a small group of lakes that possess a range of chemical character so diverse that it compares to that recorded for lakes from the entire region of western Victoria and south-eastern South Australia. Principal Components Analysis and reaction path modelling using PHRQPITZ confirm that the chemical diversity of the lakes is largely inherited from the groundwater system. Three end-members (in the Eugster–Jones–Hardie framework) were identified: (i) Path 1B groundwaters transmitted via the fractures of a sandstone monolith; (ii) Path 2A-1A groundwaters derived, in part, from a limestone aquifer; and (iii) groundwaters that carry an essentially meteoric, Path 2A signature. The relative contribution of these path 1B and/or path 2A end-members largely determines the evaporative pathway (1B or 2A) that is subsequently followed, and creates a broad spread in the data. Sulphate reduction, ion exchange, silicate hydrolysis and carbonate mineral solubility also play important roles locally, in some cases displacing lake waters from one evaporation field to another. The chemical processes identified likely contribute to aquatic biodiversity in the region, due to the strong control on the ionic composition of the lakes.

Seasonal fluctuation in river stage strongly affects the ecological functioning of tropical floodplain lakes. This study was conducted to assess the influence of hydrological seasonality on bacterial production and abundance in two floodplain lakes of the Autana River, a blackwater river in the Middle Orinoco basin, Venezuela. Water samples for nutrient chemistry, chlorophyll a, and microbiological determinations were collected in two floodplain lakes and in the mainstem of the river during 1997–98. DOC and chlorophyll a concentrations were similar between mainstem and lake sites during high water when river and lakes were well connected but became different during the period of low water when the interaction was minimal. Higher values of bacterial production were observed in the floodplain lakes (0.62–1.03 g C l–1 h–1) compared to the mainstem sites (0.17–0.19 g C l–1 h–1) during the period of low water, while during the period of high water river and lake sites showed similar levels (0.04 g C l–1 h–1). Bacterial numbers followed bacterial production in the floodplain lakes, reaching higher numbers during the period of low water (1.41–2.40 × 106 cells ml–1). Availability of substrate and inorganic nutrients, pH, and inputs and losses of bacterial cells could be determining the observed seasonal patterns in bacterial production and abundance. The Autana lakes exhibited a strong seasonal pattern in the chemical and biological conditions, showing higher productivity during the lentic phase that lasted between 5 and 6 months.  相似文献

It is widely accepted that clear water phases constitute a regular stage in the seasonal succession of plankton in dimictic lakes and reservoirs (i.e. PEG Model). The occurrence of such a phenomenon in Mediterranean shallow lakes is characterised by a marked interannual variability, which makes it difficult to establish reliable predictions on the dynamics and functioning of plankton in these ecosystems. In the present paper we analyse the factors influencing the occurrence of the clear water phases in the two shallow lakes of the Albufera of Adra, a coastal wetland region of south-eastern Spain: Lake Honda and Lake Nueva. Despite their geographical proximity, both lakes depicted large hydrological and limnological differences. Lake Honda is an epigenic and recharge lake that is strongly influenced by the hydrological conditions in its watershed, while Lake Nueva can be classified as a hypogenic and discharge lake and, as such, is less affected by the hydrological regime. In contrast, the morphometry, exposure and fetch of Lake Nueva make this ecosystem especially sensitive to wind forcing. Clear water phases in these shallow lakes were linked with periods of low thermal stability and the dominance of small-edible algae in the phytoplankton community, both of which allowed a Daphnia magna population to grow up and induce the algae collapse by grazing. In Lake Honda, those conditions were met during the spring of 2002 under the influence of intense rainfall-events, while in Lake Nueva the clear water phase was induced in the spring of 2003 by the occurrence of strong and frequent wind events. In both lakes, a relatively high water column thermal stability and the abundance of cyanobacteria early in the spring prevented the development of the Daphnia magna population and the occurrence of the clear water phase.  相似文献

This study examines the seasonal variation in the underwater spectral distribution of light in a mesotrophic (Lake Cromwell) and an oligo-mesotrophic (Lake Croche) temperate lake. Gilvin is primarily responsible for the strong selective attenuation of blue light in both lakes. As a result of differing gilvin concentrations light transmission maxima of downwelling and upwelling spectra are near 615 nm in Lake Cromwell and 599 nm in Lake Croche. With increases in depth both upwelling and downwelling radiance fluxes decrease, are shifted to longer wavelengths and become more monochromatic. The greatest penetration of light occurs in the summer and spring after which a gradual decrease occurs through fall to a minimum value in winter. Under the winter cover the P 50 of downwelling light shifts 10 to 20 nm towards shorter wavelengths. Seasonal changes in downwelling irradiance are related to solar altitude, concentration of suspended particles, phytoplankton populations, amount of gilvin, mixing and winter cover. The brownish colouration of these lakes is explained by reflectance of spectrally impure orangish-red light.  相似文献

Summary. The effects of demineralized water (DEMI H2O) and 0.5 M ammonium acetate (0.5 M AAc) on losses of L-glutamic acid and L-arginine in the course of shaking and filtration at low temperature (6 °C) were tested. The concentration of L-glutamic acid decreased by 6.3% in DEMI H2O and by 4.9% in 0.5 M AAc, whereas the L-arginine concentration decreased by 6.0% (DEMI H2O) and 10.7% (0.5 M AAc). We found a significantly (P < 0.05) higher degradation of L-arginine in 0.5 M AAc compared with that of DEMI H2O.  相似文献

The hydraulic conductivity of roots (Lpr) of 6- to 8-d-old maize seedlings has been related to the chemical composition of apoplastic transport barriers in the endodermis and hypodermis (exodermis), and to the hydraulic conductivity of root cortical cells. Roots were cultivated in two different ways. When grown in aeroponic culture, they developed an exodermis (Casparian band in the hypodermal layer), which was missing in roots from hydroponics. The development of Casparian bands and suberin lamellae was observed by staining with berberin-aniline-blue and Sudan-III. The compositions of suberin and lignin were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively after depolymerization (BF3/methanol-transesterification, thioacidolysis) using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Root Lpr was measured using the root pressure probe, and the hydraulic conductivity of cortical cells (Lp) using the cell pressure probe. Roots from the two cultivation methods differed significantly in (i) the Lpr evaluated from hydrostatic relaxations (factor of 1.5), and (ii) the amounts of lignin and aliphatic suberin in the hypodermal layer of the apical root zone. Aliphatic suberin is thought to be the major reason for the hydrophobic properties of apoplastic barriers and for their relatively low permeability to water. No differences were found in the amounts of suberin in the hypodermal layers of basal root zones and in the endodermal layer. In order to verify that changes in root Lpr were not caused by changes in hydraulic conductivity at the membrane level, cell Lp was measured as well. No differences were found in the Lp values of cells from roots cultivated by the two different methods. It was concluded that changes in the hydraulic conductivity of the apoplastic rather than of the cell-to-cell path were causing the observed changes in root Lpr. The hydrodynamics of the two Maarsseveen Lakes are the main cause of the difference in water quality. The meso-oligotrophic Lake I is mainly supplied by groundwater and rainwater while the eutrophic Lake II is fed by water from the River Vecht. Both lakes, however, have a relative high concentration of Zn and Cd in their water system and sediment. The mean concentrations of Zn and Cd in the water system are even higher than in the River Vecht. Measurements of atmospheric deposition (dry and wet) illustrated high levels of Zn, Cd and Cu transported to this area. There are indications that three metallurgical industries located in this region are responsible for the high deposition of these metals in the lakes (PULLES, 1986).  相似文献

Spatial processes are increasingly associated with species distributions in freshwaters. However, these processes are usually neglected in bioassessment techniques, which may introduce uncontrolled variation in ecological indicators used to express human disturbance. We used partial linear regression to quantify the relative importance of natural variables, human disturbance and spatial variables in structuring variation in boreal lake status indicators based on six biological indicator groups (phytoplankton, macrophytes, diatoms, littoral and profundal macroinvertebrates and fish). We found that, of the pure fractions, human disturbance explained most variation (7–32%) of the ecological quality ratios (EQRs) for all groups, with the exception of littoral macroinvertebrate metric, which was most controlled by natural and spatial variables (15% and 16%, respectively). In addition, pure fractions of natural and spatial variables and joint fractions of different explanatory variable groups structured all biological metrics to various degrees. Phytoplankton, diatom and profundal macroinvertebrate EQRs responded purest to human disturbance but only weakly to pure natural or spatial variation. Our work demonstrates that spatial processes and spatial structuring of the environment can bias bioassessment techniques and hinder the detection of human impact. Thus, it is important to acknowledge spatial autocorrelation, context of metacommunity dynamics, species dispersal traits and variable spatial extent when defining reference conditions and bioassessment techniques for different biological groups. More research is needed to better understand the relative role of spatial processes on ecological metrics originated from different freshwater ecosystems. To this end, our work provides an example of how sources of variation can be identified to increase accuracy in freshwater bioassessment.  相似文献

In order to assess the importance of gas vacuoles in planktonic bacteria we carried out a survey of 35 lakes of different types. At least 39 morphologically distinct species of gas-vacuolate bacteria were encountered. All of the freshwater lakes, and one of two seawater-flooded quarries, which became thermally stratified in summer, contained gas-vacuolate bacteria in their anaerobic hypolimnia; however, with one exception, none was found in isothermally mixed lakes. This pattern of distribution supports the idea that gas vacuoles are important in providing buoyancy, a function which is relevant only in non-turbulent aquatic systems.  相似文献

Although well-known methods for the detection of intestinal parasitic protozoans in water samples exist, they are insufficiently sensitive, expensive, of little practical value in the routine monitoring of waterborne pathogens and time- and labour-consuming. In the investigation reported here we have assessed Cryptosporidium oocyst detection using both the so-called Method 1623[recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)] and a direct method involving the determination of oocysts of Cryptosporidium in rotifers as detection tools of surface water contamination by dispersive stages of intestinal protozoans. Rotifers were sampled from three lakes located near the city of Poznan (Poland). To detect the oocysts of Cryptosporidium, we applied the fluorescent in situ hybridisation technique, an immunofluorescent assay and an enzyme immunoassay. Oocysts of Cryptosporidium were detected both in water collected from the lakes and in rotifers. The FISH technique applied to rotifers enabled the detection of biological contamination of surface water through an assessment of the dispersive stages of the parasite and was found to be more sensitive, less time-consuming and cheaper than the method recommended by the USEPA.  相似文献

The diets of two sympatric, morphologically similar species of Moenkhausia were studied to investigate whether the manner in which they exploit food resources can help to explain their coexistence. Fish diets were evaluated during the low‐water season in six lakes of the upper Paraná River floodplain (Brazil). The results indicate that these two species segregate in relation to food resources and that the differential use of resources is probably a strategy that reduces competition during periods of a potential food shortage (the low‐water season).  相似文献

Short-term responses of producers highlight that key nutrients (e.g., N, P)—or combinations of these nutrients—limit primary production in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. These discoveries continue to provide highly valuable insights, but it remains important to ask whether nutrients always predominantly limit producers despite wide variation in nutrient supply and herbivory among systems. After all, predictions from simple food chain models (derived here) readily predict that limitation by grazers can exceed that by nutrients, given sufficient enrichment. However, shifts in composition of producers and/or increasing dominance of invulnerable stages of a producer can, in theory, reduce grazer limitation and retain primacy of nutrient limitation along nutrient supply gradients. We observed both mechanisms (inter- and intra-species variation in vulnerability to herbivory) working in a two-part mesocosm experiment. We incubated diverse benthic algal assemblages for several months either in the presence or absence of benthic macro-grazers in mesocosms that spread a broad range of nutrient supply. We then conducted short-term assays of nutrient and grazer limitation on these communities. In the “historically grazed” assemblages, we found shifts from more edible, better competitors to more resistant producers over enrichment gradients (as anticipated by the food web model built with a tradeoff in resistance vs. competitive abilities). However, contrary to our expectations, “historically ungrazed” assemblages became dominated by producers with vulnerable juvenile forms but inedible adult forms (long filaments). Consequently, we observed higher resource limitation rather than grazer limitation over this nutrient supply gradient in both “historically grazed” (expected) and “historically ungrazed” (not initially expected). Thus, via multiple, general mechanisms involving resistance to grazing (changes in species composition or variation in stage-structured vulnerability), producer assemblages should remain more strongly or as strongly limited by nutrients than grazers, even over large enrichment gradients.
