African Hepatics: VI. Euosmolejeunea

Abstract

(1) The ratio of ¹⁴CO₂ uptake of fully expanded capsules to that of corresponding gametophytes in the species studied was about 1 : 15 in Mnium hornum, 1 : 35 in Pleurldium acuminatum and around 1 : 1 in Funaria hygrometriea.

(2) Translocation of photosynthate from gametophyte to sporophyte took place within 1 to 4 days of exposure to ¹⁴CO₂; in expanded capsules the final activity was at least equal to that remaining in the gametophyte.

(3) In M hornum there was no evidence of reverse translocation from sporophyte to gametophyte.

(4) Translocation from gametophyte continued at a high level throughout the expansion and differentiation of the capsule in M. hornum. The activity reaching the sporophyte was approximately proportional to its fresh weight.

(5) Both in situ photosynthesis and translocation to the capsule of F. hygrometrica rose to a maximum during the latter part of capsule expansion and ensuing differentiation, subsequently declining as the green tissues of the capsule senesced.

(6) Fully expanded (but premeiotic) capsules of M. hornum contributed approximately 20% of the assiinilate necessary for their growth. The corresponding figure for P. acuminatum was about 10%, and for F. hygrometrica about 50%.

Abstract

A new species of Amphicephalozia, A. africana Váňa &; M. Wigginton from Mt Karisimbi, Rwanda is described and illustrated. This is the third species to be recognised from the genus.

Lophocolea bispinosa, new to the British Isles, is described in detail. This small dioecious species, which may have been introduced from New Zealand, is well established in the Isles of Scilly, especially in and around the Abbey Gardens in Tresco.

Abstract

The following new species are described: Colura usambariea E. W. Jones from Tanzania (Usambara Mountains) and Malawi; Colura saroltae T. Pócs and C. hedbergiana T. Pócs, both from Tanzania (Kilimanjaro).

Abstract

Lejeunea obtusata Gott. is described and recorded from Madagascar, Mauritius, Tanzania, Ghana, Sierra Leone and probably Uganda. L. cantabrigiensis E.W. Jones sp. nov. is described from Cameroon Mountain. L. obtusistipula (Steph.) E.W. Jones, comb. nov. (Cheilolejeunea obtusistipula Steph.) is described from Sierra Leone. Taxonomic notes on allied species, including L. confusa E.W. Jones, are included.

Abstract

Lejeunea brenanii sp. nov. and Microlejeunea ankasica sp. nov. are described. Lejeunea autoica Schuster and Pycnolejeunea contigua (Nees) Grolle are described and recorded as new to Africa. Lejeunea longirostris (Steph.) E.W. Jones, nom. inval., is a synonym of L. grossecristata (Steph.) E.W. Jones. Critical notes and/or new localities are provided for Colura digitalis (Mitt.) Steph., C. dusenii Steph., C. humbertii S. Jovet-Ast, C. sp. ad inornata Jovet-Ast, Marchesinia moelleriana Pearson.
