Twelve new South American species of Loranthaceae (Aetanthus, Cladocolea, Oryctanthus, and Struthanthus) and Viscaceae (Dendrophthora and Phoradendron) are described and illustrated: Aetanthus trifolius, Cladocolea rostrifolia, Dendrophthora lanceolata, Dendrophthora rotundata, Dendrophthora tenuis, Dendrophthora werffii, Oryctanthus minor, Phoradendron pascoi, Phoradendron vasquezianum, Struthanthus apiculatus, Struthanthus schultesii, and Struthanthus sessiliflorus. Additionally, Cladocolea alternifolia, previously thought to be probably extinct, is reported to occur on Ilha Grande, just west of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  相似文献

Background: Species-rich Nardus stricta grasslands are a priority habitat for conservation in Europe. They typically occur on siliceous substrates and less frequently are found on calcareous bedrock.

Aims: The present paper aimed to identify the environmental factors (i.e. bedrock type, topographic, and climatic factors) that are related with community diversity and to assess if differences in plant diversity between N. stricta communities on calcareous and siliceous bedrock occur. We hypothesised that Nardus grasslands on calcareous bedrock hosted a higher vascular plant diversity than those on siliceous bedrock.

Methods: Based on 579 vegetation surveys carried out in the south-western Alps, we assessed vascular plant diversity (species richness, Shannon diversity, and Pielou’s equitability index) of species-rich Nardus grasslands and compared it between N. stricta communities on calcareous and siliceous bedrock.

Results: Elevation was identified as the main factor related to species composition, while species diversity was mostly related to mean annual precipitation and bedrock type. Species richness, Shannon diversity, and Pielou’s equitability index were higher within the communities on calcareous rather than on siliceous bedrock and a total of 89 and 34 indicator species were detected, respectively.

Conclusions: Based on our results, we suggest to protect primarily, as a habitat of priority interest, N. stricta grasslands on calcareous substrates for the higher vascular plant diversity hosted.  相似文献

Background and Aims: High elevation treelines occur worldwide at similar mean growing season temperatures. Does this result from direct impact of low temperature on growth or carbon metabolism, or does nutrient limitation, induced by low soil temperature, play a role? Similar treeline elevations at contrasting soil fertility argue against the latter, but the actual nutritional status of treeline trees (here addressed as foliage nitrogen concentration) has never been assessed systematically. Although needle nitrogen (N) concentration does not necessarily indicate growth limitation by N, the relative abundance of N would indicate obvious depletions at the treeline.

Methods: A central problem with any foliage nutrient assay is that the units for describing the element concentration are dependent on elevation themselves. Here we separate changes in N per unit tissue from changes in reference units.

Results: Needles of Pinus cembra and Picea abies in the Alps do not show elevational differences in N concentration per dry weight, water content, area or volume, thus, there is no N depletion near the elevational tree limit. Hence, nutrient supply is either unaltered, or growth is adjusted so that nutrient depletion in needle tissue does not occur.

Conclusions: Chronic N shortage at needle level is not an explanation for low tree vigour at the treeline.  相似文献

Summary

The embryosac development in Nerine rosea Herb. has been found to occur according to the Normal type and indications of an identical development were found for Nerine curvifolia Herb., contrary to the observations of Schlimbach (1924), who reported a Lilium type for this species. Embryosacs of the Normal type also occur in Amaryllis Belladonna, to which a tetrasporic development had been erroneously ascribed by Schlimbach (1924). In Nerine rosea Herb. the formation of the microspores is of the «successive» type; the aploid cromosome number is n=12, in accordance with the describtions of Heitz.  相似文献

Summary

Male nymphs of the pentastome Kiricephalus pattoni become sexually mature in the second intermediate host, the water snake Tropidonotus piscator. Pairing of male and female nymphs, and sperm transfer, occur at the same stage. Males (but not females) retain nymphal characters within the definitive host, the rat snake Ptyas mucosus.  相似文献

In combining the author's theories of organismic sets (Rashevsky,Bull. Math. Biophysics,31, 159–198, 1969a) and Robert Rosen's theory of (M, R)-systems (Bull. Math. Biophysics,20, 245–265, 1958), a conclusion is reached that the number of either normal or pathological phenomena in organismic sets may occur. Those phenomena are characterized by occurring spontaneously once in a while but are not exactly periodic. Some epilepsies are an example of such pathological phenomena in the brain.  相似文献

Abstract

The 5’ flanking region of the α‐lactalbumin gene from Bos indicus (Brahman) and Bos taurus (Holstein) have been sequenced. The sequences were compared to detect potential sequence variations. The 538 bp of 5’ flanking region contained nine sequence variations between the two breeds. Seven of the variations occur in the 5’ flanking region of the α‐lactalbumin gene and two occur in the region encoding the 5’ untranslated region of the mRNA. Seven of the variations are conservative purine to purine or pyrimidine to pyrimidine variations, while two are purine to pyrimidine variations.  相似文献

Some probability distributions connected with distinct hits on targets, using two different firing schemes, are developed. It is assumed that any shot has a probabilityp, not necessarily unity, of hitting the target at which it was aimed. The development uses a well-known expression for the probability that exactlyt ofN possible events occur simultaneously. Mesozoic orthopterans of the family Elcanidae are reported (as nymphs) in amber, from the latest Albian-Cenomanian of northern Myanmar and the Albian of northern Spain. Four distinct new species in two new genera occur, Burmelcana longirostris n. gen, n. sp. in amber from Myanmar and Hispanelcana arilloi n. gen, n. sp., H. alavensis n. sp. and H. lopezvallei n. sp. from Spanish amber. Detailed preservation reveals the fine structure of the tibial spurs and spines that are so distinctive to Elcanidae, as well as details of the abdominal styli, cerci, tarsomeres, and mouthparts. Elcanidae and their stem group, Permelcanidae, are known from the Early Permian to the Early Cretaceous (Aptian), so the amber fossils represent the latest known occurrence of this clade.  相似文献

The continuous model of Anderson et al. (1981), Nature 289, 765–771, is successful in describing certain characteristics of rabies epizootics, in particular, the secondary recurrences which follow the initial outbreak; however, it also predicts the occurrence of exponentially small minima in the infected population, which would realistically imply extinction of the virus. Here we show that inclusion of a more realistic distribution of incubation times in the model can explain why extinction will not occur, and we give explicit parametric estimates for the minimum infected fox density which will occur in the model, in terms of the incubation time distribution.  相似文献

Abstract

Antheridia that are undoubtedly axillary occur in species of Bryum, Mnium and Aulacomnium. It is suggested that this is a primitive feature and that the typical moss antheridial head, with all the antheridia apparently terminal, has been derived from species with axillary antheridia, either by restriction of the antheridia to the axils of the uppermost bracts, as in the liverwort Haplomitrium blumei, or by the suppression of the upper bracts.  相似文献

Abstract

Three endemic taxa of Cominella Gray are recorded from the Three Kings Islands, New Zealand. Cominella (Josepha) regalis n.sp. and C. (Josepha) quoyana griseicalx n.ssp. occur sympatrically in relatively shallow water (to c.50m), whereas C. (Eucominia) mirabilis mirabilis Powell is known only from c.180m. Following revision of Dendroceros specimens from West Africa and South Atlantic islands, three species are recognized for this geographical area: Dendroceros adglutinatus, D. africanus and finally D. herasii which is described as new. On the other hand, D. crispatus is excluded from Africa while Folioceros fuciformis (Megaceros lacerus, Anthoceros fuciformis) is excluded from Equatorial Guinea. Burmeistera, Centropogon, and Siphocampylus together comprise more than 500 species endemic to the Neotropics, Current knowledge of these genera is unsatisfactory, with much diversity yet to be described. Over the past seven years, one out of every 28 specimens received for identification has represented a new species, many characterized by unique or unusual character states. Siphocampylus smilax (Bolivia) is unique in the genus in its parallelodromous leaf venation and extra-floral nectaries. Centropogon dianae (Peru) cannot be accommodated in any recognized infrageneric taxon, and a new section, Centropogon sect. Niveopsis, is proposed for it. The flowers of C. steinii (Ecuador) are the smallest known in the genus, while C. connatilobatus (Venezuela) is the first species to combine arbusculiform pubescence and connate calyx lobes. Burmeistera venezuelensis is only the second species of the genus known to occur in Venezuela and the first to be endemic; similarly, Centropogon wilburii is only the third species of Centropogon known from Mexico and the first to be endemic to that country. Frequency and localization of mitosis in lateral root primordia of Marsilea strigosa. At different stages of development of the root primordium of Marsilea strigosa the apical cell undergoes a strong decline in mitotic activity whilst active divisions occur in the mass of cells sorrounding the apical.
