AbstractBranching in Fontinalis occurs primarily in the range of 5 to 15°C and differs among the species. Pool conditions reduce branching significantly among most species and can account for the reduction in growth observed in those conditions.Data on six species of Fontinalis support the hypothesis that Fontinalis produces more rhizoids in response to temperatures above 10°C and that this production will correspond with the summer season in the north temperate and arctic zones. Since branch production is not inhibited at 15°C and is only slightly reduced at 20°C, it appears that rhizoid production does not interfere significantly with branch production. Since rhizoid clumps often originate at branch innovations, the continuation of branching throughout the summer could aid the moss in attaching during the summer when its chances of success are maximum. 相似文献

Selective acylation of the phenolic hydroxyl group of 10-hydroxycamptothecin has been accomplished using phenyl dichlorophosphate. Additional modification of the 10-OH as an ether permits a 20-acyl derivative to be synthesized. This result along with data from a 6-hydroxyquinoline model strongly suggests that powerful intermolecular hydrogen bonding exists in the parent molecule. 相似文献

Changes in the concentrations of endogenous polyamines and ethylene were determined in two diverse species of rose viz. Rosa damascena and Rosa bourboniana during post-harvest periods. At full bloom, the concentrations of free putrescine was significantly higher than rest of the
polyamines, i.e. spermine and spermidine in both the species. The concentrations of all the polyamines decreased during subsequent
periods upto 48 h after full bloom. Similar situation was also observed in conjugated fraction but in bound fraction, during
full bloom, the concentration of spermine was higher than rest of the polyamines. In both the species, ethylene showed higher
levels during full bloom with maximum in R. damascena, which increased, during post-harvest periods. The possible significance of polyamines, ethylene and their interactions is

The two alkylating agents ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) were compared for genotoxic effectiveness in various test systems. The study was undertaken partly to shed light on the difference between the compounds found after chronic exposure of monkeys (Lynch et al., 1984) where EO but not PO was able to induce SCE and chromosomal aberrations. In the present study EO was found to be 5–10 times more effective than PO with respect to gene conversion and reverse mutation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae D7 and sister-chromatid conversion in S. cerevisiae RS112. In contrast, the abilities of the two compounds to induce point mutation in S. typhimurium strains and SCE in human lymphocytes were approximately equal. One possible cause of EO being more effective than PO in certain respects, discussed on the basis of inference from earlier studies, is an expected difference in ability to cause strand breaks via alkylation of DNA-phosphate groups. 相似文献

Summary Rough lemon (Citrus jambhiri Lush.) and sour orange (C. aurantium L.) seedlings were grown at constant soil temperatures of 16, 24, and 33 C for 3 months. Shoot and root growth of rough lemon was greatest at 33 C while growth of sour orange was greatest at 24 C. There were no significant effects of soil temperature on shoot: root ratio, leaf water potential or stomatal conductance. The hydraulic conductivity of intact root systems of both species was highest when seedlings were grown at 16 C. Thus, acclimation through greater root conductivity at low soil temperature may have compensated for decreased root growth at 16 C and negated effects of soil temperature on plant water relations. Half the plants growing at each soil temperature were subsequently flooded. Within 1 week, the soil redox potential (Eh) dropped below zero mV, reaching a minimum Eh of –250mV after 3 weeks of flooded conditions. Flooded plants exhibited lower root conductivity, a cessation of shoot growth, lower leaf water potentials, lower stomatal conductances, and visual sloughing of fibrous roots. The growth and development of fifteen species of Acridoidea were studied, with and without the addition of tannic acid in concentrations of up to 20% dry weight. In no case was digestion disturbed, and only at the high levels was there a significant reduction in consumption. Polyphagous species showed no deleterious effects, and in two species tannin was beneficial, while graminivorous acridids showed reduced growth rates and poor survival. The difference lies mainly in the fact that tannic acid penetrates the peritrophic membrane in the graminivorous species, and causes damage to the midgut epithelium with the eventual development of lesions and the occurrence of tannin in the haemocoel.

Zusammenfassung Wachstum und Entwicklung von 15 Acridoidea-Arten wurde studiert und zwar mit und ohne Zugabe von Tanninsäure zur Nahrung in Konzentrationen bis zu 20% Trockensubstanz. In keinem Fall wurde die Verdauung beeinträchtigt; nur in den hohen Konzentrationen wurde die Futteraufnahme gesichert vermindert. Polyphage Arten zeigten keine ungünstige Effekte, und bei zwei Arten wirkte Tannin günstig. Dagegen wurde bei grasfressenden Heuschrecken das Wachstum reduziert, und die Überlebensrate war gering. Der Unterschied liegt im wesentlichen darin, dass bei grassfressenden Arten Tanninsäure in die peritrophische Membran eindringt und das Mitteldarmephithel beschädigt, wobei es zu Läsionen kommt und wobei Tannin in die Körperhöhle gelangt.相似文献

Summary Individual-based simulations were conducted to examine the effect of a small ecological neighbourhood (an area in which ecological processes such as density-dependent factors operate) and the genetic neighbourhood size (the size of an area from which the parents may be assumed to be drawn at random) on the coevolution of two competing species. For the simulations, individuals of two consumer species compete for two types of food organisms. Different genotypes (one locus and two alleles) have different efficiencies of food acquisition for different food types. Individual consumer organisms search for food within their home ranges and reproduce depending on the amount of food eaten. The dispersal distance of the offspring follows a normal distribution with a zero mean and

standard deviation. Simulations were conducted by varying the home range size, mating area (area from where individuals choose their mates), standard deviation of dispersal distance, food generation time, the reproductive rates of food populations and the sizes and number of independent food populations. Food organisms reproduce either within one population or independently within 16 spatially divided populations. For all the simulations, competitive exclusion was the most frequent outcome and character displacement was the least frequent outcome. Through a 200-generation simulation, the two consumer species could co-exist longer and maintain a polymorphic resource use longer when the home range and mating size were small in 16 spatially divided populations than when random mating and homogeneous interaction occurred within a community (perfect mixing population). For perfect mixing populations, the frequency of character displacement increased as the food generation time became short and the reproductive rates of food decreased. It follows from the results that the sizes of the genetic and ecological neighbourhoods and the mode of resource dynamics can affect the evolution of two competing species. 相似文献

Background
As a first step to explore the possible relationships existing between the effects of low oxygen pressure in the first trimester placenta and placental pathologies developing from mid-gestation, two subtracted libraries totaling 2304 cDNA clones were constructed. For achieving this, two reciprocal suppressive/subtractive hybridization procedures (SSH) were applied to early (11 weeks) human placental villi after incubation either in normoxic or in hypoxic conditions. The clones from both libraries (1440 hypoxia-specific and 864 normoxia-specific) were spotted on nylon macroarrays. Complex cDNAs probes prepared from placental villi (either from early pregnancy, after hypoxic or normoxic culture conditions, or near term for controls or pathological placentas) were hybridized to the membranes.Results
Three hundred and fifty nine clones presenting a hybridization signal above the background were sequenced and shown to correspond to 276 different genes. Nine of these genes are mitochondrial, while 267 are nuclear. Specific expression profiles characteristic of preeclampsia (PE) could be identified, as well as profiles specific of intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR). Focusing on the chromosomal distribution of the fraction of genes that responded in at least one hybridization experiment, we could observe a highly significant chromosomal clustering of 54 genes into 8 chromosomal regions, four of which containing imprinted genes. Comparative mapping data indicate that these imprinted clusters are maintained in synteny in mice, and apparently in cattle and pigs, suggesting that the maintenance of such syntenies is requested for achieving a normal placental physiology in eutherian mammals.Conclusion
We could demonstrate that genes induced in PE were also genes highly expressed under hypoxic conditions (P = 5.10-5), which was not the case for isolated IUGR. Highly expressed placental genes may be in syntenies conserved interspecifically, suggesting that the maintenance of such clusters is requested for achieving a normal placental physiology in eutherian mammals. 相似文献14.

Plants have evolved many defenses against insect herbivores, including numerous chemicals that can reduce herbivore growth, performance, and fitness. One group of chemicals, the tropane alkaloids, is commonly found in the nightshade family (Solanaceae) and has been thought to reduce performance and fitness in insects. We examined the effects of the tropane alkaloid scopolamine, an alkaloid constituent of Datura wrightii, which is the most frequent host plant for the abundant and widespread insect herbivore Manduca sexta in the southwestern United States. We exposed caterpillars of two different species to scopolamine: M. sexta, which has a shared evolutionary history with Datura and other solanaceous plants, and Galleria mellonella, which does not. We showed that the addition of ecologically realistic levels of scopolamine to both the diet and the hemolymph of these two caterpillar species (M. sexta and G. mellonella) had no effect on the growth of either species. We also showed that M. sexta has no behavioral preference for or against scopolamine incorporated into an artificial diet. These results are contrary to other work showing marked differences in performance for other insect species when exposed to scopolamine, and provide evidence that scopolamine might not provide the broad-spectrum herbivore resistance typically attributed to it. It also helps to clarify the coevolutionary relationship between M. sexta and one of its main host plants, as well as the physiological mechanism of resistance against scopolamine. 相似文献

The role of ethylene (ET) signaling in the responses of two hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L. x P. tremuloides Michx.) clones to chronic ozone (O(3); 75 nL L(-1)) was investigated. The hormonal responses differed between the clones; the O(3)-sensitive clone 51 had higher ET evolution than the tolerant clone 200 during the exposure, whereas the free salicylic acid concentration in clone 200 was higher than in clone 51. The cellular redox status, measured as glutathione redox balance, did not differ between the clones suggesting that the O(3) lesions were not a result of deficient antioxidative capacity. The buildup of salicylic acid during chronic O(3) exposure might have prevented the up-regulation of ET biosynthesis in clone 200. Blocking of ET perception with 1-methylcyclopropene protected both clones from the decrease in net photosynthesis during chronic exposure to O(3). After a pretreatment with low O(3) for 9 d, an acute 1.5-fold O(3) elevation caused necrosis in the O(3)-sensitive clone 51, which increased substantially when ET perception was blocked. The results suggest that in hybrid aspen, ET signaling had a dual role depending on the severity of the stress. ET accelerated leaf senescence under low O(3), but under acute O(3) elevation, ET signaling seemed to be required for protection from necrotic cell death. 相似文献

1. Variations in the strength of ecological interactions between seasons have received little attention, despite an increased focus on climate alterations on ecosystems. Particularly, the winter situation is often neglected when studying competitive interactions. In northern temperate freshwaters, winter implies low temperatures and reduced food availability, but also strong reduction in ambient light because of ice and snow cover. Here, we study how brown trout [Salmo trutta (L.)] respond to variations in ice-cover duration and competition with Arctic charr [Salvelinus alpinus (L.)], by linking laboratory-derived physiological performance and field data on variation in abundance among and within natural brown trout populations. 2. Both Arctic charr and brown trout reduced resting metabolic rate under simulated ice-cover (darkness) in the laboratory, compared to no ice (6-h daylight). However, in contrast to brown trout, Arctic charr was able to obtain positive growth rate in darkness and had higher food intake in tank experiments than brown trout. Arctic charr also performed better (lower energy loss) under simulated ice-cover in a semi-natural environment with natural food supply. 3. When comparing brown trout biomass across 190 Norwegian lakes along a climate gradient, longer ice-covered duration decreased the biomass only in lakes where brown trout lived together with Arctic charr. We were not able to detect any effect of ice-cover on brown trout biomass in lakes where brown trout was the only fish species. 4. Similarly, a 25-year time series from a lake with both brown trout and Arctic charr showed that brown trout population growth rate depended on the interaction between ice breakup date and Arctic charr abundance. High charr abundance was correlated with low trout population growth rate only in combination with long winters. 5. In conclusion, the two species differed in performance under ice, and the observed outcome of competition in natural populations was strongly dependent on duration of the ice-covered period. Our study shows that changes in ice phenology may alter species interactions in Northern aquatic systems. Increased knowledge of how adaptations to winter conditions differ among coexisting species is therefore vital for our understanding of ecological impacts of climate change. 相似文献

Species of the freshwater planarian genus Polycelis have a variable number of eyes in the head, typically more than a hundred. To elucidate the mechanisms determining the number of eyes, we investigated the relation between eye number and body length in Polycelis sapporo (Ijima & Kaburaki), a non-fissioning species, and P. auriculata Ijima & Kaburaki, a fissioning species. In P. sapporo reared at 7–8 °C, a positive correlation existed between number of eyes and body length. Eye number decreased with starvation. A similar correlation was true of P. auriculata. In specimens of P. auriculata undergoing regeneration, the rate of eye formation was higher in newly formed heads originating from larger tail-pieces than in those from smaller pieces. As a head regenerated from a tail piece or as the body size increased with feeding, the number of eyes increased. These results suggest that the number of eyes in an individual of Polycelis is determined by body length. The fine structure of the photoreceptor and pigment cells in the eyes of P. auriculata is similar to that of comparable cells in the pair of eyes in Dugesia despite the difference in the number of cells comprising an eye. 相似文献

The modification of the carboxyl groups of the subunits of bovine luteinizing hormone to neutral derivatives by carbodiimide-mediated coupling with glycine methyl ester has been studied. The modified alpha subunit, which has 8 residues of glycine methyl ester incorporated, will no longer recombine with native beta (hormone-specific) subunit, but the modified beta subunit, with 6 to 7 glycine methyl esters incorporated, will recombine with native alpha to yield a partially active hormone. Derivatization of the intact hormone results in dissociation to subunits together with formation of a major side product which is covalently cross-linked. Significant cross-linked product was not obtained during modification of individual subunits, thus indicating an orientation between an activated carboxyl group(s) and a nucleophile(s) in the intact hormone which favors coupling. Separation of subunits from the derivatized, noncross-linked fraction by countercurrent distribution reveals a heterogeneous preparation of the modified alpha subunit which also will not recombine with either a native or modified beta subunit. The beta subunit from the modified intact hormone was indistinguishable from the modified isolated beta subunit in amino acid composition and in ability to recombine with native alpha subunit. The results are consonant with data from this and other laboratories in which various modifications of the alpha chain, the subunit common to the glycoproteins, more seriously affect recombination than similar modifications of the beta subunits. The number of carboxyl groups modified in each subunit is compatible with but not in total agreement with assignments of amides reported from sequence studies. 相似文献
