Abstract

In theory, the E-W location and high elevation of the Neovolcanic Belt have reduced floristic flow between parts of northern and southern Mexico. However, this barrier effect is not complete, as may be inferred from the distribution of moss taxa in adjacent areas. Migration across the Neovolcanic Belt may account for the presence of many moss species on either side of this mountain range. Moss exchange may take place through topographic discontinuities herewith designated as floristic corridors. There are at least seven such inland corridors as well as the two coastal plain areas. The latter are probably very important in the latitudinal distribution of lowland species from the tropics northward. The moss flora of the Tuxpan corridor in Michoacan includes lowland species and corridor taxa which have reached or crossed the Neovolcanic Belt from the south if of tropical derivation. The remaining mosses are high elevation species or taxa of broad altitudinal distribution which have spread along the mountains.  相似文献

The widespread, lowland toad Bufo valliceps has an unusual distribution in North and Middle America that straddles two major biogeographic areas; previous morphological studies of this species suggested the existence of two species. We used mitochondrial DNA sequences to examine the phylogeography of this species and discovered the existence of two distinct clades. We recognize these as two species: B. valliceps and B. nebulifer. These molecular data support morphological data from previous studies. Our results show low levels of molecular variation in a morphologically uniform temperate species (B. nebulifer) and high levels of molecular variation in a morphologically variable tropical species (B. valliceps), providing an example of molecules matching morphology. Two biogeographic hypotheses are tested to explain the current distribution of these species, based on a calibrated rate of evolution and the percent sequence divergence between the two species. A more recent Pleistocene dispersal event, followed by vicariance associated with rising sea level, is rejected in favor of an earlier Miocene-Pliocene vicariant hypothesis associated with the formation of the Trans-Mexican Neovolcanic Belt.  相似文献

Lake Zempoala was studied throughout 16 months in 1996–1997. It is a shallow monomictic lake situated at 2800 masl at the Neovolcanic Belt, well within the Mexican tropical zone. Most of the phytoplankton species in this lake may be characterized as temperate, according to their geographical distribution. A break down in phytoplankton biomass was observed before the lake's circulation, and open to question if a clear-water phase could be present in a tropical lake.  相似文献

Aim In this study, we investigate phylogeographic structure in two different species groups of lowland toads. First, we further investigate strict parapatry of the Pliocene‐vicariant Bufo valliceps/B. nebulifer species pair. Secondly, we test for similar phylogeographic structure in the distantly related toad B. marinus, a species we hypothesize will show a Pleistocene dispersal across the same area. Location The eastern extension of the Trans‐Mexican Neovolcanic Belt (TMNB) contacts the Atlantic Coast in central Veracruz, Mexico. Although it is not a massive structure at this eastern terminus, the TMNB has nonetheless effected vicariance and subsequent speciation in several groups of animals. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec unites the North American continent with Nuclear Central America and is also known to be a biogeographic barrier for many taxa. Methods We use sequence data from two mitochondrial DNA genes (c. 550 base‐pairs (bp) of 16S and c. 420 bp of cyt b) from 58 individuals of the B. valliceps/nebulifer complex, collected from 24 localities. We also present homologous sequence data from 23 individuals of B. marinus, collected from 12 localities. We conduct maximum‐parsimony, maximum‐likelihood and Bayesian analyses to investigate phylogeographic structure. We then use parsimony‐ and likelihood‐based topology tests to assess alternative phylogenetic hypotheses and use a previously calibrated molecular rate of evolution to estimate dates of divergence. Results Our results further define the parapatric contact zone across the TMNB between the Pliocene‐vicariant sister species B. valliceps and B. nebulifer. In contrast, phylogenetic structure among populations of B. marinus across the TMNB is much shallower, suggesting a more recent Pleistocene dispersal in this species. In addition, we found phylogeographic structure associated with the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in both species groups. Main conclusions The existence of a Pliocene–Pleistocene seaway across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec has been controversial. Our data depict clades on either side of the isthmus within two distinct species (B. valliceps and B. marinus), although none of the clades associated with the isthmus, for either species, are reciprocally monophyletic. In the B. valliceps/B. nebulifer complex, the TMNB separation appears to predate the isthmian break, whereas in B. marinus dispersal across the TMNB has occurred subsequent to the presence of a barrier at the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.  相似文献

Abstract

Selected examples of pollen and seed dispersal in Mediterranean plants are described. The aspects of pollination considered are: comparison between cleistogamous and chasmogamous forms in the same species; differences in attractants and rewards; duration of pollen viability according to pollination syndrome. The aspects of seed dispersal considered are: presence or absence of specialized structures for dispersal; examples of active, passive and induced dispersal; animals involved in seed dispersal and their reward; type and functions of elaiosomes.  相似文献

Background: As seed dispersal can vary among years and individuals, studies that focus on a single year or on a few individuals may lead to erroneous conclusions.

Aims: To study temporal and spatial intraspecific variation of seed dispersal in Scrophularia canina, a widespread species with capsule-type fruit.

Methods: Primary seed dispersal was quantified by placing traps in each cardinal direction around 10 individuals during two consecutive years. We correlated several seed shadow parameters (modal dispersal distance, kurtosis, skewness, percentiles, slope, and seed percentage beneath the plant canopy) with three plant features (maximum height, lateral spread and seed production).

Results: Scrophularia canina dispersed their seeds by boleochory, giving rise to a typical leptokurtic curve, but behaving as a barochorous species, because about 90% of seeds landed beneath the plant canopy. Temporal dispersal in S. canina included several seed waves associated with maximum wind speeds. Plant lateral spread was significantly positively correlated with seed percentiles and percentage of seeds beneath the plant canopy regardless of year. A seed production effect was only evident when both years were considered together.

Conclusions: Although time-consuming, investigation of the dispersal process for more than 1 year provides more realistic information on seed dispersal. Lateral spread is the main plant feature determining seed shadow.  相似文献

AimHabitat loss and fragmentation impose high extinction risk upon endangered plant species globally. For many endangered plant species, as the remnant habitats become smaller and more fragmented, it is vital to estimate the population spread rate of small patches in order to effectively manage and preserve them for potential future range expansion. However, population spread rate has rarely been quantified at the patch level to inform conservation strategies and management decisions. To close this gap, we quantify the patch‐specific seed dispersal and local population dynamics of Minuartia smejkalii, which is a critically endangered plant species endemic in the Czech Republic and is of urgent conservation concern.LocationŽelivka and Hrnčíře, Czechia.MethodsWe conducted demographic analyses using population projection matrices with long‐term demographic data and used an analytic mechanistic dispersal model to simulate seed dispersal. We then used information on local population dynamics and seed dispersal to estimate the population spread rate and compared the relative contributions of seed dispersal and population growth rate to the population spread rate.ResultsWe found that although both seed dispersal and population growth rate in M. smejkalii were critically limited, the population spread rate depended more strongly on the maximal dispersal distance than on the population growth rate.Main conclusionsWe recommend conservationists to largely increase the dispersal distance of M. smejkalii. Generally, efforts made to increase seed dispersal ability could largely raise efficiency and effectiveness of conservation actions for critically endangered plant species.  相似文献

Background: There is limited understanding about bird dispersal behaviour and seedling distribution of endangered tree species in patchy environments, although these processes are important for plant species persistence.

Aims: We tested how patch features affected bird behaviour and seed dispersal, and thus seedling distribution of the endangered Chinese yew tree (Taxus chinensis).

Methods: In the present study, we combined field data of bird dispersal behaviour and GIS-based information to elucidate the influence of spatial features of habitat patches on bird dispersal behaviour, and the resulting effects on the seedling distribution of the endangered Chinese yew in two patchy habitats.

Results: Our results showed that the only seed source patch could attract eight bird species for dispersal at the two sites. Post-foraging movements of bird dispersers was strongly related to both topography and the relative locations of habitat patches. Yew seedlings aggregated only at the seed source and bamboo recruitment patches, which was affect by both the spatial distribution of recruitment patches and patch use by dispersers.

Conclusions: Our results emphasise that bamboo patches in both patchy environments provide the necessary conditions for germination of yew seeds, and the post-foraging behaviour of dispersers determines seed deposited in these patches. Our study highlights the importance of the dispersal behaviour of frugivorous birds in the successful regeneration and colonisation of yew populations in patchy habitats.  相似文献

Background: Urbanisation filters species in communities depending on their adaptability to conditions in built-up areas, especially in semi-natural habitats. Roadside vegetation is widespread along urban-rural gradients and is therefore a good place to study landscape-scale factors influencing plant community composition.

Aim: Our study aimed to assess how plant species distributions vary between urban and rural landscape contexts and to identify biological traits favoured in urban areas.

Methods: Presence/absence data for 63 indigenous common species were collected in 296 road verge patches distributed along the urban–rural gradient in three French cities. We investigated the effects of landscape composition on species assemblages and related individual species responses to urbanisation to functional traits associated with dispersal and persistence capacity.

Results: Many grassland species were negatively affected by increasing proportion of built-up areas in the landscape. Insect-pollination and high seed production appeared to be key traits favoured in grassland communities in urban areas, whereas dispersal modes were less related to plant distribution.

Conclusions: This study has demonstrated that urban filters affect common species of widespread, managed road verges. Better knowledge of the flora of these herbaceous roadsides may contribute to the conservation of common biodiversity within other grassland habitats found in urban areas.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Ophiocordyceps is a genus comprised by entomopathogenic fungi known to infect ten orders of insects, including Hymenoptera. Amongst the nearly 250 species described in the genus, few are known to manipulate their hosts, which are most notably ants. These species cause their hosts to die in an exposed position high above the ground while grabbing and/or biting the abaxial surface of leaves or branches, which in turn optimizes the fungus spore production and dispersal. Herein, we report on 14 social wasp species belonging to four genera (Agelaia, Mischocyttarus Polybia, and Pseudopolybia) infected by Ophiocordyceps humbertii, a common wasp pathogen. This study broadens the geographic and host range for O. humbertii and provides the first record of its ability to manipulate its host.  相似文献

Background: It is critical to understand the ecological factors shaping seed dispersal in plant communities in order to predict their fate in the face of global change. Communities restricted to patchy habitats may contain more species with ‘directed’ dispersal syndromes that facilitate successful seed dispersal to other patches; however, habitat quality may constrain the presence of and efficiency of dispersal syndromes found within those habitats.

Aims: The aim of this study was to hypothesise that if habitat patchiness is an important filter on dispersal syndromes, ‘directed’ vertebrate dispersal should be more prevalent in serpentine habitats because of their patchiness. Alternatively, if habitat quality is more important, wind dispersal should be more prevalent in serpentine habitats because of their low fertility.

Methods: Using three datasets representing grassland, chaparral and forest vegetation types, we analysed differences in the composition of dispersal syndromes (vertebrate, wind, passive, water and ant) between communities on patchy infertile serpentine soils and on continuous, fertile non-serpentine soils. Our analyses also accounted for correlated functional traits and phylogenetic relatedness.

Results: Across and within all three vegetation types, serpentine communities had significantly higher proportions of wind dispersed and lower proportions of vertebrate-dispersed species. These patterns were not independent of functional traits. Proportions of the other dispersal syndromes did not differ.

Conclusions: Our results suggest that on low-fertility soils, habitat quality may outweigh habitat patchiness as a filter on the availability of dispersal syndromes, potentially adding to the vulnerability of such communities to stochastic extinctions and global change.  相似文献

Background: Propagule production and dispersal largely determine the distribution and potential migration ability of alpine plant species. Variation in reproductive success caused by year-to-year variation in climate may critically influence these processes.

Aims: To obtain estimates for the propagule rain in high-alpine plant communities and detect potential dispersal events from lower elevations.

Methods: The magnitude and composition of the propagule rain was studied in different plant communities along an elevation gradient from the upper alpine to subnival zone. Propagules were trapped at eight elevations from 2760 to 3070 m a.s.l. for three years from July to September 2003–2005. Vascular plant species and their cover were recorded in an area with a radius of 10 m surrounding the traps.

Results: A five- to 10-fold higher propagule rain was observed in 2003, a year with an exceptionally hot summer, compared to 2004 and 2005. Propagule and species numbers varied highly among years and community types. Few propagules of non-local origin were recorded in any year.

Conclusions: Extremely hot summers are likely to greatly magnify the propagule rain size of species in alpine habitats. Such ‘mast years’ may contribute to enhanced and accelerated vegetation changes in alpine habitats in the absence of limiting factors.  相似文献

Dispersal is a key element of a species' invasiveness. Although considerable work has addressed how dispersal influences the pattern of spatial spread of invading organisms, few studies investigate whether invasive species are in fact better dispersers than either the species they displace or less successful invaders. Recent work suggests that variation in dispersal may be due to variation in an underlying behavioral trait, boldness. Our study examined the link between dispersal, boldness, and invasiveness by comparing the dispersal characteristics and refuge use of two invasive Gambusia species to two congeners in experimental streams. The streams consisted of a series of pools (no flow) connected to a flowing channel. For each species, small groups of females were released at the middle pool, and their movement and activity were recorded over a 1-h period. We found invasive Gambusia to be more likely to disperse out of the introductory pool, to disperse sooner, to travel a greater distance in the artificial streams, and thus to exhibit greater dispersal tendencies than their close relatives. Among the invasives, Gambusia affinis had a greater dispersal tendency than G. holbrooki. We suspect this result indicates variation in the contribution of dispersal to the relative invasiveness of these species. Certain dispersal measures were correlated to time spent out of refuge, although invasive Gambusia and their relatives did not differ in the predicted manner. These results argue for the greater incorporation of experimental approaches and analyses of behavioral mechanisms in the study of invasive species.  相似文献

Background and AimsIn angiosperms, many species disperse their seeds autonomously by rapid movement of the pericarp. The fruits of these species often have long rod- or long plate-shaped pericarps, which are suitable for ejecting seeds during fruit dehiscence by bending or coiling. However, here we show that fruit with a completely different shape can also rely on pericarp movement to disperse seeds explosively, as in Orixa japonica.MethodsFruit morphology was observed by hard tissue sectioning, scanning electron microscopy and micro-computed tomography, and the seed dispersal process was analysed using a high-speed camera. Comparisons were made of the geometric characteristics of pericarps before and after fruit dehiscence, and the mechanical process of pericarp movement was simulated with the aid of the finite element model.Key ResultsDuring fruit dehydration, the water drop-shaped endocarp of O. japonica with sandwich structure produced two-way bending deformation and cracking, and its width increased more than three-fold before opening. Meanwhile the same shaped exocarp with uniform structure could only produce small passive deformation under relatively large external forces. The endocarp forced the exocarp to open by hygroscopic movement before seed launching, and the exocarp provided the acceleration for seed launching through a reaction force.ConclusionsTwo layers of water drop-shaped pericarp in O. japonica form a structure similar to a slingshot, which launches the seed at high speed during fruit dehiscence. The results suggest that plants with explosive seed dispersal appear to have a wide variety of fruit morphology, and through a combination of different external shapes and internal structures, they are able to move rapidly using many sophisticated mechanisms.  相似文献

Background and AimsSeveral biogeographical models have been proposed to explain the colonization and diversification patterns of Macaronesian lineages. In this study, we calculated the diversification rates and explored what model best explains the current distribution of the 15 species endemic to the Canary Islands belonging to Helianthemum sect. Helianthemum (Cistaceae).MethodsWe performed robust phylogenetic reconstructions based on genotyping-by-sequencing data and analysed the timing, biogeographical history and ecological niche conservatism of this endemic Canarian clade.Key ResultsOur phylogenetic analyses provided strong support for the monophyly of this clade, and retrieved five lineages not currently restricted to a single island. The pristine colonization event took place in the Pleistocene (~1.82 Ma) via dispersal to Tenerife by a Mediterranean ancestor.ConclusionsThe rapid and abundant diversification (0.75–1.85 species per million years) undergone by this Canarian clade seems the result of complex inter-island dispersal events followed by allopatric speciation driven mostly by niche conservatism, i.e. inter-island dispersal towards niches featuring similar environmental conditions. Nevertheless, significant instances of ecological niche shifts have also been observed in some lineages, making an important contribution to the overall diversification history of this clade.  相似文献

Dendroctonus mexicanus is polyphagous within the Pinus genus and has a wide geographical distribution in Mexico and Guatemala. We examined the pattern of genetic variation across the range of this species to explore its demographic history and its phylogeographic pattern. Analysis of the mtDNA sequences of 173 individuals from 25 Mexican populations allowed to us identify 53 geographically structured haplotypes. High haplotype and low nucleotide diversities and Tajima’s D indicate that D. mexicanus experienced rapid population expansion during its dispersal across mountain systems within its current range. The nested clade phylogeographic analysis indicates that the phylogeographic pattern of D. mexicanus is explained by continuous dispersion among lineages from the Sierra Madre Occidental, the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. However, we also observed isolation events among haplotypes from the Cofre de Perote/Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt/Sierra Madre Oriental and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt/Sierra Madre del Sur, which is consistent with the present conformation of mountain systems in Mexico and the emergence of geographical barriers during the Pleistocene.  相似文献

Summary

Bryozoans are common encrusting organisms in many shallow-water marine environments. Although reproducing sexually, their success as space occupiers resides largely in their capacity for colonial growth by zooidal budding (regarded by some as a form of asexual reproduction). This paper examines the reproductive strategies of several bryozoan species commonly associated with the fronds of coastal macroalgae. These range from ephemeral species that grow rapidly, reproduce and die (Electra pilosa, Celleporella hyalina, Membranipora membranacea) to more or less annual species with well-developed reproductive and growth cycles (Flustrellidra hispida, Alcyonidium spp.). Whilst many of these bryozoans brood relatively few short-lived lecithotrophic larvae, others produce large numbers of longer-lived planktotrophic larvae. The seasonal and daily patterns of larval release are described for selected species. Resource allocation to sexual and colonial functions is considered in the context of environment-genotype interactions. Reproductive strategy is especially important in determining dispersal and colonising ability, and these in turn are major determinants of ecological pattern in epialgal bryozoan communities.  相似文献

A new species, Cuscuta cotijana, is described and illustrated from the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt in northwestern Michoacán, Mexico. The species is most closely related to Cuscuta jalapensis, C. mitriformis, C. rugosiceps and C. lindsayi, from which it differs by the large spur-like projections on the outer calyx lobes and the ovoid to conical capsule with a small intrastylar aperture.  相似文献

Abstract

In this study of the reproductive ecology of wall plants, adaptation to wall habitats was observed to be influenced by characteristics of the vegetative and reproductive structures. Perennial species were more numerous than annuals. Diaspore dispersal was principally anemochorous, due to the small size and weight of diaspores, together with anatomical features and aerostatic organs favouring wind dispersal. Species adaptability and the efficiency of reproductive mechanisms are evidently the main factors ensuring the survival and dispersal of wall plants.  相似文献
