On a new species of electric catfish from Kainji, Nigeria, with some observations on its biology

A new species of electric catfish, Malapterurus minjiriya , from Kainji, Nigeria, is described and a key for separating it from the two other known species is given. Notes on some aspects of the biology of the electric catfishes in Lake Kainji, Nigeria are included.     

Thamnobryum subserratum and T. subseriatum (Musci) in Asia

A review of the nomenclatural history ofThamnobryum subserratum andThamnobryum subseriatum shows that the former, which ranges widely from the Himalayas to Southeast Asia, has been misrepresented in the literature asThamnobryum “subseriatum,” and that the latter, which appears to be a Japanese endemic, has been called a superfluous name,Thamnobryum sandei. A new combination,Thamnobryum subseriatum (Mitt. ex Sande Lac.) Tan, is proposed for the Japanese endemic and its lectotype hereby designated. In addition, morphological differences between the two taxa are discussed.     

Trichoderma eijii and T. pseudolacteum, two new species from Japan

Trichoderma eijii and T. pseudolacteum, are described here as new species from Japan. These species were isolated from decaying wood in the Tomakomai Experimental Forest in Hokkaido Prefecture and from bedlogs on shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes) farms, respectively. The species were characterized using a combined approach that included cultural studies, holomorph morphology, and phylogenetic analyses of internal transcribed spacer and protein coding gene sequences (RNA polymerase subunit II, translation elongation factor 1-α, endochitinase, and actin). The results of phylogenetic analyses of these gene sequences indicate that T. eijii belongs to the Hamatum clade and is closely related to Hypocrea pezizoides, H. flaviconidia, and H. atroviridis/T. atroviride, from which it differs mainly in part-ascospore size and anamorphic characteristics. Trichoderma pseudolacteum, which was previously recognized as H. lactea sensu Doi, is morphologically distinct from H. lactea (= Hypocrea citrina) and is strongly supported as a separate lineage based on our phylogenetic analyses.

Studies on the species of Sedum sarmentosum and S. angustifolium

The Chinese medicine “Chuipencao” is studied. But, as a matter of fact, this Chinese name represents two distinct forms, one with broad leaves and the other with narrow leaves. As a result of a comprehensive study on gross morphology, pollen morphology, histological structure, isozymes, GC analysis of chemical constituents of the plants in question has shown that the narrow-leafed form is different from the broadleafed form and therefore is considered as a new species, Sedum angustifolium Z. B.Hu et X. L. Huang sp. no     

Further observations on the genus Geonemertes with a description of a new species from the Philippine Islands

Intraspecific variation in the histological appearanceof several morphological characters is examined in 33specimens of the land nemertean, Geonemertespelaensis, obtained from many separate geographiclocations. Variations in the external appearance,together with other characters not previously reportedfor this species, are also discussed. A new speciesof Geonemertes from the Philippine Islands, G. philippinensis sp. nov., is described andillustrated, and an emended diagnosis of the genus isprovided.     

Two new species of Tubificoides (Oligochaeta, Tubificidae) and new records of T. brownae and T. imajimai from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, with a redescription of T. bakeri

Two new species of Tubificoides are described from the west coast of Florida. Both species have large lateral openings of the penis sheaths with proximal flap-like projections. Tubificoides pollex sp.n. is characterized by (1) papillate body wall in postclitellar segments; (2) possession of hair and bifid setae anteriorly, and only bifid setae in pcstclitellar segments; and (3) conical penis sheaths with a lateral opening and a flap-like projection on the proximal margin. The setal distribution of the new species is similar to that of T. bakeri Brinkhurst, 1986, which is redescribed on the basis of new material. Tubificoides lunatus sp.n. is similar to T. pollex except that the flap-like projections of the penis sheaths are crescent shaped, all the somatic setae are bifid, and body wall papillae are absent. Records of Tubificoides brownae Brinkhurst & Baker, 1979, and T. imajimai Brinkhurst, 1986, from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, respectively, are also presented. The latter species was previously known only from subtropical regions of Japan and the People's Republic of China.     

A new species of Tephrosia (Leguminosae) from southern Yemen, with a note on the identity of T. geminiflora

Tephrosia hadramautica , a new species from the coastal plain of Hadramaut in southern Yemen, is described and illustrated. T. geminiflora , previously regarded as an endemic of Hadramaut, is reduced to a synonym of T. suhtriflora .     

Staphylococcus muscae, a new species isolated from flies.

A new coagulase-negative species of the genus Staphylococcus, Staphylococcus muscae, is described on the basis of the results of a study of four strains that were isolated from flies. 16S rRNA sequences of the type strains of S. muscae, Staphylococcus schleiferi, and Staphylococcus sciuri were determined and used, together with the corresponding sequences of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, for a comparative analysis. The new species is characterized taxonomically; this species is differentiated from the other novobiocin-susceptible staphylococci by its physiological and biochemical activities, cell wall composition, and levels of genetic relatedness. The type strain of this species is strain MB4 (= CCM 4175).

Three new species of Tropodiaptomus from southern Africa are described, Tropodiaptomus zambeziensis, T. bhangazii, and T. capriviensis. Type localities are a rice paddy on the Zambezi river delta, a coastal lake in Zululand, and temporary pools in Bushmanland and the eastern Caprivi in Namibia. Speciation of Tropodiaptomus in the warm inland waters of southern Africa is much more extensive than was formerly realised.

Field observations on some dwarf chameleons (Brookesia spp.) from rainforest areas of Madagascar, with description of a new species

Six species of Brookesia dwarf chameleons were recorded during two rainforest expeditions in Madagascar. One of these is described as a new species Brookesia valerieae based on the arrangement of the nine pairs of dorso-lateral spines, the lack of a pelvic shield, and dorsal chevron markings. Observations were made on the defence and roosting behaviours shown by these six species. Aspects concerning the evolution and conservation in Madagascar are discussed for this poorly studied group of endemic Malagasy reptiles.
