Abstract

Grimmia serrana, a new endemic species for California, is described and illustrated. The new species is readily distinguished by the presence of multi-stratose marginal bands that are rounded in cross-section. The leaf morphology displayed by Grimmia serrana is unique within the genus. The distribution of Grimmia serrana is along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada and in the northern Coast Range.  相似文献

Abstract

Analyses of populations of Grimmia doniana from Old Red Sandstone walls (Brecon Beacons, Breconshire) and vitrified lead slag (Charterhouse, Somerset) showed the former to have a low and the latter a high lead content. Lead in material from the field was shown to be ionically bound to an extracellular site. Uptake of lead from solutions of lead nitrate was by a passive physical process, without penetration of the cytoplasm. No difference in lead uptake capacity was detected between the two populations. The results are discussed in terms of a natural non-specific lead tolerance mechanism occurring in Grimmia doniana.  相似文献

Abstract

Grimmia anomala is reported from seven sites in Scotland and Ireland. Confusion in the past with Grimmia hartmanii has meant that this species has been overlooked. Its occurrence in Scandinavia and the Faroes means that its sites in Scotland are not unexpected but the Irish localities for this boreal-montane species are noteworthy.  相似文献

Abstract

In February 2000, a Grimmia collecting trip was made in the Nepalese Khumbu valley. Grimmia Hedw. is the most abundantly occurring moss genus in this area, and from Lukla (2866 m) up to Mt Everest base camp (5400 m) ten species were encountered. A key is presented. G. handelii Broth., hitherto only known by gametophytes from China, was found with sporophytes, and is described and illustrated. The other species are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Neotrombicula naultini (Dumbleton, 1947) was redescribed from the type specimen and additional specimens collected off Hoplodactylus granulatus (= Dactylocnemus granulatus), Hoplodactylus maculatus, and Hoplodactylus pacificus in New Zealand. Neotrombicula sphenodonti and Microtrombicula hoplodactyla were described, as new species, from specimens collected from New Zealand reptiles.  相似文献

Abstract

The desiccation-tolerant moss, Grimmia laevigata, dominates the vegetation on exposed granitic boulders at a semi-arid site in southern California but fails to occur in especially xeric microsites, on overhanging surfaces, and on boulders of southfacing hillsides. It was hypothesized that establishment, rather than adult survival, limits the microdistribution of the moss. As predicted, adult plants transplanted to these microsites outside the observed microdistribution of the species showed no evidence of reduced function after one year. However, direct studies of establishment are required to confirm the hypothesis. Differences in net photosynthesis and chlorophyll content among transplants suggested that these characteristics were phentotypically plastic and changed with light availability. In the absence of potential photodamage, G. laevigata can completely conserve chlorophyll during desiccation for at least twenty months.  相似文献

Grimmia curviseta Bouman is a moss species endemic to the Canary Islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, which has a very restricted distribution across the summit areas of Tenerife and La Palma islands. Using massive sequencing, we developed ten polymorphic microsatellite markers for this species. The pattern of microsatellite alleles per locus provides preliminary evidence that G. curviseta is allodiploid. The average number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 7, and observed heterozygosities varied from 0.022 to 1.000. A significant genetic differentiation was observed between the Tenerife and La Palma populations, suggesting that there are some limitations to dispersal. This set of microsatellites constitutes a valuable tool to investigate patterns of genetic diversity across the distribution range of G. curviseta, information that may eventually be used to establish conservation strategies for the species. Owing to the cross-amplification with the closely related species Grimmia montana Bruch & Schimp., our study also demonstrates the utility of these markers for population-level genetic analyses in the genus Grimmia.  相似文献

New records of 38 hepatics and 87 mosses are reported from Greece. Leiocolea heterocolpos, Cephaloziella calyculata, Dicranella schreberiana, Hennediella stanfordensis, Weissia levieri, Grimmia alpestris and Grimmia torquata are believed to be new to the country. Summary Photosynthetic capacity, chlorophyll content and leaf and cell morphology were compared in Grimmia antarctici from wet and dry sites in the Bailey Peninsula SSSI, near Casey Station, East Antarctica. In wet sites G. antarctici grew as a turf with tall shoots of loosely packed long leaves: in very dry sites it formed small cushions with short shoots of small tightly packed leaves. Intermediate forms (large cushions) were also frequently observed in less extreme situations. Cell size and number were greater in drier sites. The chlorophyll content, chlorophyll a/b ratio and the light saturated photosynthetic and dark respiration rates at full turgor and under enhanced conditions of CO2 were the same. This rules out a direct effect of water stress on the integrity of the photosynthetic apparatus and implies that the cushion form is a product of direct effects of water availability on cell division and differentiation and CO2 assimilation under field conditions.  相似文献

Abstract

The first records of Sitona discoideus and Trifolium repens on Norfolk Island are reported. The identities of both species were confirmed using morphological criteria and nucleotide sequences. Sequence data from the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 of the Norfolk Island S. discoideus specimens were compared with 33 specimens from Australia, New Zealand and France. These data represent the first published sequences for S. discoideus, and suggest that Australia or New Zealand was the source of Norfolk Island's population. The implications of the introduction of S. discoideus to Norfolk Island are discussed.  相似文献

Diversity and phylogenetic relationships of New Zealand representatives of the red algal order Gelidiales have been examined using rbcL sequence data. Extensive field collections have been made from throughout the New Zealand region. Six genera have been reported previously from New Zealand (Capreolia, Gelidium, Pterocladia, Pterocladiella, Pterocladiastrum, Ptilophora). This research has revealed species with very restricted local distributions, as well as the discovery of several undescribed, cryptic taxa. The common and widespread Gelidium caulacantheum is confirmed to be more closely related to Capreolia than to other species of Gelidium. The generic concept of Capreolia, based on life history characters, will need to be modified to accommodate additional species possessing “Gelidium” life histories. A species endemic to New Zealand, Gelidium ceramoides, has been found to differ significantly from all other members of the Gelidiales and requires reclassification in another genus and order. Examination of field collections and herbarium specimens in addition to molecular sequence data have led us to conclude that specimens previously placed in the genera Ptilophora and Pterocladiastrum belong within Pterocladia lucida.  相似文献

Abstract

A monotypic new genus, Bispiculum, is erected for B. inaequale n.sp. from the haemocoel of Platypus apicalis, P. caviceps, and P. gracilis, ambrosia beetles indigenous to New Zealand. B. inaequale is characterised by its possession of a pair of spicules and three rows of anal papillae in the male, and ‘escape-form’ juveniles. This is the first record of a tetradonematid in New Zealand, and the first of a tetradonematid from the Curculionidae. All stages are described, and the life history is discussed. The diagnosis of the Tetradonematidae is emended, the family is reviewed, and a key to species is provided.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Pselaphotumulus Owens and Carlton, gen. nov., is described as the sixth genus in the tribe Pselaphini known from New Zealand. Three new species are described: Pselaphotumulus aorerei, sp. nov., Pselaphotumulus dubius, sp. nov. and Pselaphotumulus unus, sp. nov.. Three species, Pselaphus cavelli (Broun 1893), Pselaphus oviceps (Broun 1917) and Pselaphus urquharti (Broun 1917) are transferred to Pselaphotumulus, nov. combs. Lectotypes from type series in the New Zealand Broun Collection (Natural History Museum, London) are designated for these three species. Habitus photographs, distributional maps and line drawings of diagnostic characters are provided for each species. A key to species is provided. Searches of museum collections have not yielded representatives outside of New Zealand, suggesting that this is the first endemic genus in the tribe Pselaphini described from the New Zealand’s main islands, specifically, the South Island. Pselaphotumulus species exhibit restricted distribution patterns that approximately coincide with the Pacific/Indo Australian Plate boundary.  相似文献

Gelidium allanii Chapman is endemic to northern New Zealand with a highly localised distribution. This species has remained little known, having been collected from only one locality for more than 40 years. We compare this species with other New Zealand members of the Gelidiaceae, in particularGelidium caulacantheum andPterocladia capillacea, presenting new data on morphology, distribution and agar chemistry to more fully characteriseG. allanii.G. allanii possesses a very distinctive, highly pyruvated agar. Abstract

Mnioloma fuscum, a liverwort species known to date primarily from tropical-montane regions, is reported for New Zealand for the first time. Its occurrence in New Zealand is unexpected as the next nearest known site is believed to be the Solomon Islands, some 3500 km distant. The occurrence of Mnioloma fuscum in New Zealand highlights the contribution tropical regions have made to the composition of New Zealand's hepatic flora.  相似文献

Specimens of the brown lanternshark,Etmopterus unicolor, reported here for the first time from the waters around New Zealand, were caught on bottom longlines. This study compares morphometeric and meristic characters of New Zealand and Japanese specimens ofE. unicolor and New Zealand specimens of the southern lanternshark,E. granulosus. E. unicolor andE. granulosus are clearly distinguishable by the height of the first dorsal fin, number of spiral valves, number of vertebrae, and shape of the dermal denticles and teeth.  相似文献

Examination of diseased aphids from the Christchurch area of New Zealand during summer 1974 established new records of Entomophthora aphidis and E. planchoniana attacking Macrosiphum hellebori and E. planchoniana parasitising Aulacorthum solani, plus the first record for New Zealand of E. aphidis infecting Myzus persicae.  相似文献
