Abstract

S. subsecundum Nees and S. auriculatum Schimp. are distinct species which can always be separated when well grown. Poorly grown S. auriculatum can resemble S. subsecundum, but can almost invariably be distinguished by careful selection of the larger stem leaves in any gathering. When the size of both stem and branch leaves is taken into account, confusion can hardly ever arise, even with depauperate forms. S. inundatum Russ. is not specifically distinct from S. auriculatum, and is recombined as S. auricula tum Schimp. var. inundatum (Russ.) M. O. Hill.  相似文献

Abstract

An examination of eighty-six samples of Sphagnum subsecundum sensu lato, using principal components analysis, discriminant analysis and cultivation experiments, has shown that the samples fall into two well-defined groups corresponding to S. subsecundum var. inundatum and S. subsecundum var. auriculatum. The best characters for separating these include the relative number of pores on the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the stem-leaves, the form of the branches and branch-leaves, and the proportion of the length of the stem-leaf with fibrils in the hyaline cells. The results provide limited evidence in favour of the inclusion of bavaricum and rufescens within var. inundatum and var. auriculatum respectively. The status of S. subsecundum var. subsecundum requires further study.  相似文献

Abstract

The length of the annual growing season of five Sphagnum species was investigated on the Silver Flowe N.N.R. It ranged from five to six months for S. papillosum and S. magellanicum through approximately seven and ten months for S. capillifolium and S. auriculatum var. inundatum to twleve months for S. cuspidatum A mechanism of hollow and pool enlargement is proposed.  相似文献

Several complexes of species in Sphagnum (peat mosses) originated through hybridization and allopolyploidy, suggesting that these processes have played a major evolutionary role in this genus. The Sphagnum subsecundum complex includes gametophytically haploid and diploid species in North America. Analyses of 12 microsatellite loci and sequences from two plastid DNA markers show that the evolutionary history of this group is substantially more complex than previously thought. Two taxonomic species, Sphagnum lescurii and Sphagnum inundatum, include both haploid and diploid populations. Within each ploidal level, S. lescurii and S. inundatum are not genetically differentiated. The diploid taxa show patterns of fixed heterozygosity for the microsatellite markers, consistent with an allopolyploid origin. Diploid S. lescurii is an allopolyploid between haploid S. lescurii and (haploid) S. subsecundum. Sphagnum carolinianum is an allopolyploid between haploid S. lescurii and an unknown parent. We detected homoploid hybridization between the haploids Sphagnum contortum and S. subsecundum. Finally, we report three samples of diploid Sphagnum platyphyllum (otherwise haploid) that have an allopolyploid origin involving north‐eastern haploid S. platyphyllum and an unidentified taxon. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 135–151.  相似文献

Moss functioning in different taiga ecosystems in interior Alaska   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5

Summary Carbon dioxide exchange rates in excised 2-year-old shoot sections of five common moss species were measured by infrared gas analysis in mosses collected from different stands of mature vegetation near Fairbanks, Alaska. The maximum rates of net photosynthesis ranged from 2.65 mg CO2 g-1h-1 in Polytrichum commune Hedw. to 0.25 in Spagnum nemoreum Scop. Intermediate values were found in Sphagnum subsecundum Nees., Hylocomium splendens (Hedw.) B.S.G., and Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt. Dark respiration rates at 15°C ranged from 0.24 mg CO2 g-1h-1 in S. subsecundum to 0.57 mg CO2 g-1h-1 in H. splendens. The dark respiration rates were found to increase in periods of growth or restoration of tissue (i.e., after desiccation). There was a strong decrease in the rates of net photosynthesis during the winter and after long periods of desiccation.Due to increasing amounts of young, photosynthetically active tissue there was a gradual increase in the rates of net photosynthesis during the season to maximum values in late August. As an apparent result of constant respiration rates and increasing gross photosynthetic rates, the optimum temperature for photosynthesis at light saturation and field capacity increased during the season in all species except Polytrichum, with a corresponding drop in the compensation light intensities. Sphagnum subsecundum seemed to be the most light-dependent species.Leaf water content was found to be an important limiting factor for photosynthesis in the field. A comparison between sites showed that the maximum rates of net photosynthesis increased with increasing nutrient content in the soil but at the permafrostfree sites photosynthesis was inhibited by frequent moisture stress.  相似文献

Abstract

Comparative morphological and physiological studies were carried out on three species of Malaysian Pogonatum collected from habitats exposed to different light intensities ranging from 28±4 W/m2 for P. cirratum subsp. macrophyllum (Dozy & Molk.) Hyvönen, to 230±39 W/m2 for P. subtortile (Müll.Hal.) A. Jaeger to 751±45 W/m2 for P. neesii (Müll.Hal.) Dozy. Total chlorophyll and beta-carotene content were higher in P. cirratum subsp. macrophyllum and P. subtortile than in P. neesii when calculated on a fresh weight basis. However, soluble protein content was higher in the sun species compared to its shade-adapted counterparts, and the soluble protein to total chlorophyll ratio was highest in P. neesii. The chloroplasts in the leaves of P. cirratum subsp. macrophyllum were significantly larger than those in the other two species, and had more grana and thylakoids per chloroplast profile. The numbers of starch grains in P. cirratum subsp. macrophyllum and P. subtortile were more than double that observed in P. neesii. Morphological studies of the leaves showed specific differences in the shapes and heights of the lamellae found on the adaxial surfaces of the leaves. The lamellae of P. cirratum subsp. macrophyllum were rudimentary whilst those of P. subtortile were 2–3 cells high and P. neesii possessed lamellae 5–7 cells high. These findings indicate a direct correlation between the height of the lamellae and the light irradiances received by the plants. Determination of the in vitro Photosystem II photochemical rates, with an oxygen electrode, of chloroplasts isolated from these plants, showed that P. neesii and P. subtortile exhibited higher rates than P. cirratum subsp. macrophyllum. Similarly in vivo light saturation studies with an infrared gas analyzer showed that CO2 assimilatory rates were highest in P. neesii, even at low light intensities, suggesting a relationship between photosynthesis and light irradiance in these mosses that is different from vascular plants.  相似文献

Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. dextranicum strain J24 synthesized a bacteriocin named Dextranicin 24 (Dex-24), which inhibited only other Leuconostoc sp. strains. It was purified by a two-step procedure from the fraction of the bacteriocin bound to the producer cells at the end of the growth: desorption form the cells at acidic pH, followed by reserve phase HPLC. The N-terminal sequence of Dex-24 was the following: NH2− K G V L G W L S M A S S A L T G P Q Q . . . Received: 26 January 1996 / Accepted: 28 March 1996  相似文献

Twenty-four seeds were formed in 34 hand-emasculated E. canadensis florets exposed to A. subsecundum pollen. Fifteen of the 24 seeds germinated, and 12 plants were raised to maturity. Each of the 12 plants proved to be a hybrid. The hybrids were morphologically intermediate between the parents, although they favored A. subsecundum in general appearance. The parent plants were meiotically regular and behaved cytologically as strict allotetraploids, 2n = 28. Fourteen bivalents were formed in 12.6% of the hybrid cells interpreted at metaphase I. All other hybrid cells contained various combinations of univalents, bivalents, and multivalents. Mean chromosome associations of 0.22 univalents, 11.70 bivalents, 0.11 trivalente, 0.23 quadrivalents, 0.01 pentavalents, and 0.55 hexavalents were observed in 135 hybrid cells. All hybrid pollen examined was shriveled and non-staining. Five hybrids produced eight seeds, and seven hybrids were completely sterile. The ready cross-compatibility of E. canadensis and A. subsecundum and the relatively good chromosome pairing in their hybrids suggest a much closer relationship between the parent species than is implied by the prevailing taxonomic treatment. Structural rearrangements appear to be responsible for the relatively few differences between E. canadensis and A. subsecundum genomes and for the sterility of the hybrids. Cytological data from this and other investigations indicate a close relationship between many self-fertilizing Agropyron, Elymus, and Sitanion species. It is postulated that this composite of self-fertilizing Agropyron, Elymus, and Sitanion species originated by hybridization between A. spicatum and an unidentified Hordeum species.  相似文献

Interspecific hybrids between woody Parthenium argentatum Gray (guayule), native to Mexico and Southwest Texas, and herbaceous perennial P. hispidum var. auriculatum (Britton) Rollins, native to the United States, were obtained successfully. The F1 hybrids were intermediate for most morphological characters with the exception of the short woody stem, yellow pollen color, and the trichome morphology. Chromosome counts revealed the presence of 2n = 36 A-chromosomes in P. argentatum. The same number of A-chromosomes and four B-chromosomes were found in P. hispidum var. auriculatum. Observations of pollen mother cells showed regular meiosis in both parental species. At diakinesis, chiasmata averaged 1.12 and 1.24 per bivalent for P. argentatum and P. hispidum var. auriculatum, respectively. Meiotic behavior of the F1 hybrids was irregular. F1 hybrids averaged 4.43 univalents at metaphase I, 1.95 laggards at anaphase I, and 1.62 micronuclei at the tetrad stage. The low pollen stainability (5.1%) in the F1 hybrids and the limited number of viable BC1 seeds (4.07%) may be reflections of the irregular meiosis. Although these primary hybrids are partially fertile, they can be used to introduce desirable characteristics of P. hispidum var. auriculatum, such as herbaceous perennial habit, regrowth ability, and cold tolerance into guayule.  相似文献

In this paper, the genusPinguicula is revised in the Iberian Peninsula. The taxa studied areP. vulgaris, P. nevadensis, P. grandiflora subsp.grandiflora, P. dertosensis, P. vallisneriifolia, P. longifolia subsp.longifolia, P. mundi, P. alpina andP. lusitanica. Five taxa are endemic to the area studied (P. nevadensis, P. dertosensis, P. vallisneriifolia, P. longifolia subsp.longifolia andP. mundi). Two of them are confined to restricted areas:P. nevadensis is endemic to the Sierra Nevada (S Spain) andP. longifolia subsp.longifolia is endemic to the central Pyrenees (N Spain). Taxonomical, nomenclatural, morphological, chromosomal, biogeographical and ecological data are reported for each taxon. A new combination is proposed:Pinguicula Sect.Longifolia (Casper) G. The composition of the epicuticular leaf n‐alkanes of eight populations of three Satureja montana subspecies (S. montana L. subsp. pisidica (Wettst.) ?ili? , S. montana L. subsp. montana, and S. montana L. subsp. variegata (Host ) P. W. Ball ), from central and western areas of the Balkan Peninsula was characterized by GC‐FID and GC/MS analyses. In the leaf waxes, 15 n‐alkane homologs with chain‐lengths ranging from C21 to C35 were identified. The main n‐alkane in almost all samples was n‐nonacosane (C29), but differences in the contents of three other dominant n‐alkanes allowed separating the coastal from the continental populations. The diversity and variability of the epicuticular‐leaf‐n‐alkane patterns and their relation to different geographic and bioclimatic parameters were analyzed by several statistical methods (principal component, discriminant, and cluster analyses as well as the Mantel test). All tests showed a high correlation between the leaf n‐alkane pattern and the geographical distribution of the investigated populations, confirming the differentiation between S. montana subsp. pisidica and the other two subspecies. The S. montana subsp. variegata and S. montana subsp. montana populations are geographically closer and their differentiation according to the leaf‐n‐alkane patterns was not clear, even though there was some indication of discrimination between them. Moreover, most of the bioclimatic parameters related to temperature were highly correlated with the differentiation of the coastal and the continental populations.  相似文献

The O-polysaccharides were isolated from the lipopolysaccharides of emerging human pathogens Photorhabdus asymbiotica subsp. asymbiotica US-86 and US-87 and subsp. australis AU36, AU46, and AU92. Studies by sugar analysis and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy before and after O-deacetylation showed that the O-polysaccharide structures are essentially identical within, and only slightly different between, the subspecies. The following structures of the repeating units of the O-polysaccharides were established:→3)-β-d-Quip4NGlyFo-(1→4)-α-d-GalpNAcAN3Ac-(1→4)-α-d-GalpNAcA3R-(1→3)-α-d-QuipNAc-(1→where GalNAcA stands for 2-acetamido-2-deoxygalacturonic acid, GalNAcAN for amide of GalNAcA, QuiNAc for 2-acetamido-2,6-dideoxyglucose, and Qui4NGlyFo for 4,6-dideoxy-4-(N-formylglycyl)aminoglucose; R = Ac in subsp. asymbiotica or H in subsp. australis. The structures established resemble those of a number of taxonomically remote bacteria including Francisella tularensis (Vinogradov, E. V.; Shashkov, A. S.; Knirel, Y. A.; Kochetkov, N. K.; Tochtamysheva, N. V.; Averin, S. P.; Goncharova, O. V.; Khlebnikov, V. S. Carbohydr. Res.1991, 214, 289–297), which differs in (i) the presence of a formyl group on Qui4N rather than the N-formylglycyl group, (ii) the mode of the linkage between the repeating units (β1→2 vs α1→3), (iii) amidation of both GalNAcA residues rather than one residue, and iv) the lack of O-acetylation.  相似文献
