Patterns of relationships inTrichostomoideae (Pottiaceae, Musci)

Ribosomal DNA sequences were employed to infer relationships among EuropeanPottiaceae. Intragenic spacer I was sequenced for sixTrichostomoideae (Eucladium verticillatum, Pleurochaete squarrosa, Tortella flavovirens, T. nitida, T. tortuosa, Trichostomum brachydontium) and seven taxa from the other European subfamilies included inPottiaceae (Bryoerythrophyllum recurvirostrum, Didymodon vinealis, Microbryum starkeanum, Tortula muralis, Syntrichia ruralis, Weissia controversa andTimmiella cf.barbuloides). Cladistic analysis of sequence data shows close relationships betweenPleurochaete, Tortella andWeissia. Tortella appears to be paraphyletic, as it includesPleurochaete, Weissia andTrichostomum. Weissia, therefore, seems to be better placed inTrichostomoideae than, as traditionally done, inPottioideae. NeitherMerceyoideae norPottioideae appear to be monophyletic sensu stricto, at least within the limits of the taxa in analysis. Within the latter subfamily,Syntrichia is clearly separated fromTortula. These results would suggest that taxonomy inPottiaceae does not depict the pattern of descent, and therefore is in need of revision.     

New and noteworthy records of mosses from Italian national and regional Parks

Some remarkable mosses, as a result of the study of both recent collections and a review of herbarium specimens, are reported in this paper. They are: Anomodon rugelii (Müll.Hal.) Keissl., new record from southern Italy, a moss very rare in the Mediterranean region and considered threatened in many European countries; Blindia acuta (Hedw.) Bruch & Schimp. and Dichodontium palustre (Dicks.) M. Stech, both new records from Sicily, are very rare mosses in Italy. Moreover, a new locality in Sicily for the little-known species Tortula bolanderi (Lesq. & James) M. Howe is reported.     

Diospyros foliosa: the correct name for D. elliptica, and new combinations in Fijian and Samoan Diospyros (Ebenaceae)

The correct name in Diospyros L. (Ebenaceae) for a species from Tonga first described as Maba elliptica J. R. Forst. & G. Forst. and incorrectly known as D. elliptica (J. R. Forst. & G. Forst.) P. S. Green is D. foliosa (A. Gray) Bakh. In addition to the nominate variety, six additional varieties are recognised from Fiji and Samoa. As these varieties lack names under D. foliosa, the following new combinations are proposed: D. foliosa var. elliptica (J. R. Forst. & G. Forst.) Dorr, D. foliosa var. fijiensis (Bakh.) Dorr, D. foliosa var. fructuosa (A. C. Sm.) Dorr, D. foliosa var. iridea (Fosberg) Dorr, D. foliosa var. opaca (A. C. Sm.) Dorr, and D. foliosa var. savaiiensis (Christoph.) Dorr.     

A review of the Gymnostomum calcareum Nees & Hornsch. complex (Bryopsida: Pottiaceae) in southern Europe and the Macaronesian Islands,including G. calcareum var. atlanticum var. nov.

Abstract

New taxonomic observations, based on rhizoidal and protonemal gemmae of material from southern Europe and the Macaronesian Islands, are given in this work for sibling taxa of the Gymnostomum calcareum Nees & Hornsch. complex. Gymnostomum calcareum var. atlanticum Sérgio from the Iberian Peninsula, Madeira and Azores is described as a new variety, and its diagnostic characters are described and illustrated. This moss has a bistratose margin in the upper parts of the perichaetial and vegetative leaves, and the perichaetial leaves are markedly acute. It is closely related to Gymnostomum lanceolatum Cano, Ros & J. Guerra, here reduced to a variety of G. calcareum. The occurrence of fusiform or claviform protonemal gemmae provides a diagnostic feature for the different taxa.     

Diversity and ecology of desmids of peat bogs in the Jizerské hory Mts

The present study focuses on diversity and ecological preferences of desmids in peat bogs in the Jizerské hory Mts (Czech Republic). Altogether 76 desmid algae taxa have been recorded at 18 sites of the study area during our investigation in 2003–2006. Taxa Actinotaenium crassiusculum (De Bary) Teiling, Hyalotheca dissiliens var. tatrica Racib., Staurastrum avicula var. subarcuatum (Wolle) West & G. S. West, S. borgeanum Schmidle, S. simonyi var. semicirculare Coesel, Staurodesmus extensus var. isthmosus (Heimerl) Coesel, S. extensus var. vulgaris (Eichler & Racib.) Croasdale and S. spencerianus (Mask.) Teiling are new for the Czech Republic. In addition, several rare and remarkable taxa were also encountered. The species richness was relatively high in comparison to similar localities in the Czech Republic. Desmid distribution was influenced by pH and conductivity. A new check-list of the mosses of Turkey

Abstract

The check-list includes a list of genera, species, subspecies and varieties of Turkish mosses. It is composed of 726 species, subspecies and varieties representing 164 genera and 42 families. Accompanying the lists are a systematic arrangement of the genera, species and varieties and lists of synonyms, excluded species and of annotations. Three mosses, Pseudoleskeella rupestris (Berggr.) Hedenäs & L. Söderstr., Isothecium myosuroides Brid. var. brachythecioides (Dixon) C.E.O. Jensen, Eurhynchium hians (Hedw.) Sande. Lac. var. rigidum (Boulay) J.-P. Frahm are recorded as new for the moss flora of Turkey.     

Increments to genus Chamaecrista (Caesalpiniaceae: Cassiinae) from Bolivia and from Atlantic and Planaltine Brazil

Six taxa of genusChamaecrista are described: In sect.Apoucouita (Bentham) Irwin & Barneby,Ch. amorimii Barneby andCh. pteropoda Barneby, both from Atlantic Bahia; in sect.Absus ser.Incurvatae Irwin & Barneby,Ch. caspariifolia Barneby andCh. linearifolia var.latifolia Barneby, both from interior Minas Gerais; in sect.Absus ser.Hedysaroides Irwin & Barneby,Ch. fulgida Barneby, from northern Goiás; and in ser.Prostratae (Bentham) Irwin & Barneby,Ch. chiquitana Barneby, from lowland Bolivia. The affinities and differential characters of each are pointed out, and all but var.latifolia are illustrated.     

The taxonomy,phytogeography and conservation of the Fissidens flora of Singapore,with one new species,F. pseudoceylonensis

Abstract

The Fissidens flora of Singapore has been investigated and shown to consist of 16 species, including one new species, F. pseudoceylonensis . F. crispulus var. robinsonii is proposed as a new combination and two taxa (F. mittenii var. javensis M.Fleisch. and F. ceylonensis ssp. simplex M.Fleisch.) are reduced to synonyms of F. pellucidus Hornsch. and F. ceylonensis Dozy & Molk. respectively. The biodiversity of Singapore's Fissidens flora is compared with that of Peninsular Malaysia and Pulau Tioman and the ecological and conservation implications are discussed.     

Jaltomata II: new combinations for five South American species (Solanaceae)

The following species, originally described in the genusSaracha Ruiz & Pav., are transferred toJaltomata, in accordance with contemporary generic boundaries.Jaltomata auriculata (Miers) Mione is distributed from Venezuela to Peru;J. contorta (Ruiz & Pav.) Mione andJ. diversa (J. F. Macbr.) Mione both occur in Peru;J. herrerae (C. V. Morton) Mione is distributed in Peru and Bolivia;J. nitida (Bitter) Mione occurs in Venezuela.     

Euglenophyta of Bangladesh. I. Genus Trachelomonas EHR.

A total of 55 taxa belonging to Trachelomonas (Euglenophyta) are reported from Bangladesh. Of these, 5 varieties (Tr. allorgei var. madaripurense, Tr. anguste-ovata var. ellipsoidea, Tr. armata var. rangpurense, Tr. hispida var. subcoronata, Tr. asymmetrica var. crenulata) and one forma (Tr. anguste-ovata fa. minor) are described as new to science.     

Observations of spore morphology of some Pottiaceae Schimp. species (Bryophyta) in Turkey

The spores of Syntrichia ruralis (Hedw.) F. Weber and D. Mohr., S. princeps (De Not.) Mitt., S. subulata (Hedw.) F.Weber and D.Mohr var. subulata, S. subulata (Hedw.) F.Weber and D.Mohr var. angustata (Schimp.) J.J. Amann and S. subulata (Hedw.) F.Weber and D.Mohr var. graeffii Warnst. were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy for the first time. The apertural region consists of a leptoma in all spores. All taxa of the family are uniform in their spore morphology. The spores of the five taxa are of granuloid type. The spore wall of the Pottiaceae family includes sclerine (the distinction between exine and perine may be difficult to define) and intine. The taxonomy of the genus Syntrichia is discussed on the basis of its spore morphology.     

Striking autapomorphic evolution in Physotheca J.J.Engel & Gradst. (Marchantiophyta: Lophocoleaceae) blurred its actual relationships with Leptoscyphus Mitt.

Abstract

The taxonomic status and phylogenetic position of the monotypic liverwort genus Physotheca J.J.Engel & Gradst., including P. autoica J.J.Engel & Gradst. endemic to Ecuador, are inferred from phylogenetic analyses of two cpDNA loci. The results indicate that the genus is nested within Leptoscyphus and the new combination, L. autoicus (J.J.Engel & Gradst.) Vanderp. & Gradst., is made. This indicates, along with an increasing body of evidence, that extreme morphological transformations can obscure the phylogenetic signal present in morphological data.     

A second species of Ligaria (Loranthaceae)

The combinationLigaria teretiflora (Rizzini) Kuijt is proposed, based onPsittacanthus teretiflorus Rizzini, adding a second species to the genus.Ligaria teretiflora differs fromL. cuneifolia (Ruiz & Pavón) Van Tieghem in having articulated pedicels and obovate leaves which lack a necrotic apex.     

Additional reports for Italian moss flora

As a result of the study of both recent collections and a review of herbarium specimens, the following taxa are reported for the first time from various Italian regions: Hedwigia stellata Hedenäs, Hedwigia ciliata var. leucophaea Bruch & Schimp., Pleurozium schreberi (Willd. ex Brid.) Mitt. and Ptychostomum compactum Hornsch. var. compactum. The last taxon is new for southern Italy, while the report of Pleurozium schreberi confirms the occurrence of this species in southern Italy after more than half a century. Moreover, Crossidium laxefilamentosum Frey & Kürschner represents the second report of this species from Italy.     

Weissia multicapsularis,a rare moss species new to Turkey and Asia

The bryophyte flora of Karacabey (Bursa) Floodplain Forest in Turkey was investigated in 2017. Here, we report Weissia multicapsularis (Sm.) Mitt. from forest. This globally important moss species is a new record for Turkey and the continent of Asia. Illustrations, details of the location in Turkey and comparisons with morphologically similar taxa are provided.     

Aloina and Aloinella (Bryopsida, Pottiaceae) in northern Argentina

Except for a robust habit, two specimens ofAloina collected in northern Argentina are morphologically similar and are tentatively attributed toA. rigida (Hedw.) Limpr. This represents an addition to the moss flora of Argentina. In addition, two specimens ofAloinella represent significant findings: one shows features that agree with those given in the protologue forA. galeata (Müll. Hal.) Broth. and is treated here asA. galeata var.galeata to show the relationship toA. galeta var.andina (Delgad.) Delgadillo & Schiavone stat. nov.; the other belongs inA. cucullifera (Mitt.) Steere, a new record for Argentina. A key to the known species ofAloinella with updated ranges is included.     

Hepaticae Borneenses (Oxford University Expedition to Sarawak, 1932)

Abstract

The taxonomic status of Barbula montenegrina Breidl. &; Szyszyl., a putative synonym of Tortula lingulata Lindb., was re-evaluated, considering its morphological characters and the habitat conditions of the known localities. The taxon is typified here and synonymized with Tortula muralis subsp. obtusifolia (Schwägr.) Culm.

算盘子属(Glochidion J.R.G.Forst.)是叶下珠科(Phyllanthaceae)叶下珠族(Phyllantheae)中一个分类极为困难的类群。基于广泛野外考察与馆藏标本查阅,对中国该属部分物种进行分类学处理。其中,长柱算盘子[G.khasicum(Müll.Arg.)Hook.f.]与倒卵叶算盘子(G.obovatum SieboldZucc.)在中国的分布予以排除,菲岛算盘子[G.philippicum(Cav.)C.B.Rob.]在中国被发现仅分布于台湾地区;G.bodinieri H.Lév.,G.pseudo-obscurum var.glabrum Pamp.与G.pseudo-obscurum var.lanceolatum Pamp.这三个名称被处理为湖北算盘子(G.wilsonii Hutch.)的新异名;G.vaniotii H.Lév.被排除在算盘子属外,并接受为芸香科臭常春(Orixa japonica Thunb.)的异名。另外,对G.khasicum(Müll.Arg.)Hook.f.,G.obovatum SieboldZucc.,G.philippicum(Cav.)C.B.Rob.,G.pseudo-obscurum var.lanceolatum Pamp.及G.wilsonii Hutch.这五个名称进行了后选模式的指定。
