Summary Cyanobacteria-dominated biofilms involved in tufa deposition in the hardwater creek Deinschwanger Bach, Bavaria, were investigated with regard to their effect on the carbonate equilibrium and fabric formation. Current tufa deposition is evident by up to 1.5 mm thick crusts that have formed on substrate plates placed in the creek for 10 months. Hydrochemistry data indicate that carbonate precipitation along the creek is physicochemically driven by CO2 degassing, whereas photosynthetic carbon assimilation is without detectable effect on the macroscale carbonate equilibrium. However, stable isotope data indicate a minor photosynthetic effect, but only for the lower creek section where the pCO2 already drops to the two-fold of the atmospheric level. Though the initial process of external nucleation on cyanobacterial sheaths in the lower creck section might be promoted of by a photosynthetically-induced microscale pH gradient, the effect is not strong enough to cause a CaCO3 impregnation of the sheaths. The fabric of the laminated tufa crusts in the creek reflects the temporal alternation of porous microspariticPhormidium incrustatum-Phormidium foveolarum-diatom biofilms in spring, micrite-impregnatedPhormidium incrustatum-Phormidium foveolarum-diatom biofilms in summerautumn, and detritus-rich non-calcified diatom-biofilms in winter. By contrast, exopolymer-poor surfaces of cascade tufa mosses show large, euhedral spar crystals. Non-phototrophic bacteria, which occur in large numbers inPhormidium incrustatum-Phormidium foveolarums-diatom-communities, thrive on extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and dead cells of the cyanobacteria and are unlikely to promote CaCO3 precipitation.  相似文献

We studied Holocene speleothems and tufa samples collected in numerous caves and rivers in the Dinaric Karst of Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Serbia and Montenegro. Differences in the formation process of tufa and speleothems are discussed in the context of their isotopic composition (14C, 13C and 18O), as well as the chemistry of surface water (rivers, lakes) and drip water (in caves). The physical and chemical parameters monitored in the surface water (tufa precipitation) and drip water (speleothem precipitation) show that more stable conditions accompany speleothem rather than tufa formation. This is particularly obvious in the water temperature variations (2-22°C in surface water and 7-12°C in drip water) and in saturation index variation (3-11 in surface water and 1-6 in drip water). The range of 14C ages recorded by Holocene speleothems (∼12?000 yr) is wider by several thousands years than that of Holocene tufa samples (∼6000 yr). δ13C values for tufa samples range from −12‰ to −6‰ and for speleothem samples from −12‰ to +3‰ reflecting higher soil carbon and/or vegetation impact on the process of tufa than on speleothem formation. The differences in δ18O values of tufa and speleothem samples from different areas reflect different temperature conditions and differing isotopic composition in the water. The study shows that speleothems from the Dinaric Karst can be used as global palaeoclimatic records, whereas tufa records changes in the local palaeoenvironment.  相似文献

Background and aims

Subsoil acidity with a high aluminium (Al3+) soil content inhibits root growth and proliferation of durum wheat (tetraploid AABB, Triticum turgidum) leading to poor nutrient and water uptake. This study evaluated the impact of Al3+-tolerantTaMATE1B allele on root and shoot traits of durum wheat grown in an acidic soil with a high Al3+concentration.

Methods

Two durum wheat lines, Jandaroi–TaMATE1B with the TaMATE1B gene introgressed from Al3+-tolerant bread wheat and Jandaroi–null (a sister line lacking the Al3+-tolerant TaMATE1B allele), were grown in rhizoboxes in a glasshouse. We mapped root growth and proliferation over time and measured shoot traits and grain yield.

Results

Introgression of the Al3+-tolerant TaMATE1B allele into durum wheat enabled root growth and proliferation below 0.25 m of the soil profile, where the soil pH was low (4.1, CaCl2 extract) with high Al3+ content (16.5 mg kg−1), and increased total root length and biomass at 42 days after sowing (DAS; Z33) by 38.3 and 22%, respectively, relative to the Jandaroi–null. Differences in root growth between the two lines were apparent from tillering stage (Z33) and by 50% anthesis (Z64), respectively. Jandaroi–TaMATE1B had 69.2% greater root biomass, 76.2% greater root length, 5.89% greater leaf area and 18% greater shoot biomass than Jandaroi–null at 50% anthesis (Z64). Time to anthesis and physiological maturity was delayed 6–7 days in Jandaroi–TaMATE1B, compared to Jandaroi–null. Jandaroi–TaMATE1B tended to have relatively greater, but not significantly different, shoot biomass, grain yield and yield components than Jandaroi–null.

Conclusions

Introgression of the Al3+-tolerant TaMATE1B allele into durum wheat enabled root growth and proliferation down an acidic soil profile with a high Al3+ concentration. We assume that in the field where plants need to acquire water at depth differences in above-ground parameters would be amplified.

Background: Ziziphus lotus, wild jujube, is a xerophytic shrub of the Rhamnaceae family widely distributed in arid and semi-arid regions of Tunisia, where it occupies most soil types. Phenological patterns of desert plants are strongly affected by the seasonality of water availability and phreatophytes represent a particularly interesting case for studying such relationships.

Aim: This study aims to investigate the relationship between phenological traits and water potential patterns of the wild jujube as a tool for understanding how plants cope with extreme drought.

Methods: Phenophases and predawn (Ψpd) and midday (Ψmd) xylem water potentials of wild jujube were studied monthly (Nov 2007–Oct 2008) at Samaâliate and Oued El Hallouf in southern Tunisia. These sites receive164 mm and 191 mm of annual rainfall, respectively, and differ in slope and soil type.

Results: The Ψmd decreased progressively and concomitantly with increasing seasonal drought, reaching the lowest values in late summer (down to –3.9 MPa for both sites). Seasonality of Ψpd was less pronounced for plants established in Oued El Hallouf (–2.09 MPa) than in Samaâliate (–2.63 MPa) at the end of the dry season. Wild jujube is dormant from October through to March and mature plants flower in May and produce fruits in August.

Conclusions: Our results clearly demonstrate that wild jujube is a drought tolerant species reaching low water potentials during the driest months of summer.  相似文献

Summary

This study examined gonadal maturation in the sea urchin, Echinometra tsumajiroi, in relationship to body size. In the breeding season, E. tsumajiroi were collected and divided into six groups based on the length of the major axis (LM) as a measure of body size: Group 1 (6–10 mm in LM), Group 2 (11–15 mm in LM), Group 3 (16–20 mm in LM), Group 4 (21–25 mm in LM), Group 5 (26–30 mm in LM), and Group 6 (> 31 mm in LM). Although gonads were present in individuals larger than 8 mm in LM, the germ cells were undifferentiated in Group 1. Gonadal sex differentiation was first seen in Group 2: a few young oocytes appeared at the periphery of the ovary, and both spermatogonia and spermatocytes were also observed at the periphery of the testis. As size increased from Group 3 to Group 4, more mature germ cells such as ripe ova or spermatozoa were observed in ovaries and testes. In Group 5, the ovaries and testes were filled with a large number of mature eggs and spermatozoa, respectively. Spawning could be induced in this group by the injection of 0.5 M KCl into the coelomic cavity. In contrast, gonads of some of the biggest individuals, belonging to Group 6, appeared to be spent due to spawning, because few eggs were present in the ovary and relict spermatozoa were present in the testis. These results suggest that reproductive activity in the sea urchin, E. tsumajiroi, depends on body size.  相似文献

Carbonate microbialites in lakes can serve as valuable indicators of past environments, so long as the biogenicity and depositional setting of the microbialite can be accurately determined. Late Pleistocene to Early Holocene frondose draping tufa deposits from Winnemucca Dry Lake (Nevada, USA), a subbasin of pluvial Lake Lahontan, were examined in outcrop, petrographically, and geochemically to determine whether microbially induced precipitation is a dominant control on deposition. These observations were compared to modern, actively accumulating microbialites from Fayetteville Green Lake (New York, USA) using similar methods. In addition, preserved microbial DNA was extracted from the Lahontan tufa and sequenced to provide a more complete picture of the microbial communities. Tufas are texturally and geochemically similar to modern thrombolitic microbialites from Fayetteville Green Lake, and the stable isotopic composition of organic C, N, inorganic C, and O supports deposition associated with a lacustrine microbial mat environment dominated by photosynthetic processes. DNA extraction and sequencing indicate that photosynthetic microbial builders were present during tufa deposition, primarily Chloroflexi and Proteobacteria with minor abundances of Cyanobacteria and Acidobacteria. Based on the sequencing results, the depositional environment of the tufas can be constrained to the photic zone of the lake, contrasting with some previous interpretations that put tufa formation in deeper waters. Additionally, the presence of a number of mesothermophilic phyla, including Deinococcus–Thermus, indicates that thermal groundwater may have played a role in tufa deposition at sites not previously associated with groundwater influx. The interpretation of frondose tufas as microbially influenced deposits provides new context to interpretations of lake level and past environments in the Lahontan lake basins.  相似文献

Considerable amount of riparian leaf litter is annually supplied to the cascade Plitvice Lakes and trapped on tufa barriers where it decays together with aquatic macrophytes. These barriers are the sites of heavy calcite precipitation that can widely differ in terms of current velocity. We conducted a leafbag experiment at sites differing in flow velocity and tufa deposition rate. Decomposition of Petasites spp. and Fagus sylvatica was higher under high current (0.80 m/s) and high tufa deposition areas than in low current (< 0.20 m/s) and low tufa deposition areas (k = 0.085 vs. 0.021 for Petasites spp. and 0.009 vs. 0.002 for Fagus sylvatica). We concluded that although tufa deposition could interfere with decomposition by obstructing physical abrasion and also restricting microbial conditioning, thin calcite crusts developed on the surface of the leaves made them more fragile and thus accelerated their decomposition. This study reports a novel and efficient method for the synthesis of the first reported novel class of pyrazole thioglycosides 6a–h. These series of compounds were designed through the reaction of sodium 2-cyano-3-oxo-3-(4-substitutedphenylamino)prop-1-ene-1,1-bis(thiolate) salts 2 with hydrazine hydrate in ethanol at room temperature to give the corresponding sodium 5-amino-4-(substitutedphenylcarbamoyl)-1H-pyrazole-3-thiolates 3a–d. The latter compounds were treated with protected α-D-gluco- and galacto-pyranosyl bromides 4a,b in DMF at ambient temperature to give in a high yields the corresponding pyrazole thioglycosides 6a–h. Treatment of pyrazole salts 3a–d with hydrochloric acid at amobient temperature afforded the corresponding 3-mercaptopyrazole derivatives 5. The latter compounds were treated with peracetylated sugars 4 in sodium hydride in ethanol at ambient temperature to tolerate the S-glycosyl 6a–h compounds. Ammonolysis of the pyrazole thioglycosides 6a–h afforded the corresponding free thioglycosides 7a–h. The toxicity and antitumor activities of the synthesized compounds were studied.  相似文献

Summary

The oxygen consumption rate (?O2) for Potamonauteus warreni Calman (= Potamon warreni (Calman) kept in 25 °C water was 34,4 μmol 1?1 O2 kg?1 and after 72 hours in 98% R.H. air the rate was 31,9 μmol 1?1 O2 kg?1 min?1. The ?O2 values for each of the two groups are not significantly different (P > 0,05). The partial oxygen tension of pre-branchial (v = venous) haemolymph (PvCO2) is 15,3 mm Hg in water and 13,0 mm Hg in air); partial carbon dioxide tension of pre-branchial (v) haemolymph (PvCO2) is 13,2 mm Hg in water and 13,0 mm Hg in air); the total carbon dioxide concentration in pre-branchial (v) haemolymph (CvCO2) tot. is 12,3 mmol 1?1 in air and 13,9 mmol 1?1 in water) are not significantly different for the two groups (P > 0,05). The haemolymph pH and the lactate concentration for crabs in water was found to be 7,51 and 0,38 mmol 1?1 respectively. No significant differences were found in pre-branchial haemolymph oxygen tension, carbon dioxide tension, total carbon dioxide content, haemolymph pH, lactate level, chloride concentration, P50 and haemocyanin-oxygen cooperativity in control crabs kept in water, and experimental crabs held in air for 72 hours. The chloride concentration, (327,0 mmol 1?1) for crabs kept in water does not differ from that of crabs held in air for 72 hours but is at least 15% higher than the sodium concentration (255 mmol 1?1) for crabs kept in water. The gill surface area is 520 mm2 g?1 wet body mass; on average 9,2 gill platelets (lamellae) can be found on a gill length of one millimetre. Each lamella is spaced 60–70 μm apart, each with a thickness of 30–40 μm. It is concluded that P. warreni may be described as a truly amphibious fresh-water crab.  相似文献

Modern carbonate tufa towers in the alkaline (~pH 9.5) Big Soda Lake (BSL), Nevada, exhibit rapid precipitation rates (exceeding 3 cm/year) and host diverse microbial communities. Geochemical indicators reveal that carbonate precipitation is, in part, promoted by the mixing of calcium-rich groundwater and carbonate-rich lake water, such that a microbial role for carbonate precipitation is unknown. Here, we characterize the BSL microbial communities and evaluate their potential effects on carbonate precipitation that may influence fast carbonate precipitation rates of the active tufa mounds of BSL. Small subunit rRNA gene surveys indicate a diverse microbial community living endolithically, in interior voids, and on tufa surfaces. Metagenomic DNA sequencing shows that genes associated with metabolisms that are capable of increasing carbonate saturation (e.g., photosynthesis, ureolysis, and bicarbonate transport) are abundant. Enzyme activity assays revealed that urease and carbonic anhydrase, two microbial enzymes that promote carbonate precipitation, are active in situ in BSL tufa biofilms, and urease also increased calcium carbonate precipitation rates in laboratory incubation analyses. We propose that, although BSL tufas form partially as a result of water mixing, tufa-inhabiting microbiota promote rapid carbonate authigenesis via ureolysis, and potentially via bicarbonate dehydration and CO2 outgassing by carbonic anhydrase. Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation in BSL tufas may generate signatures preserved in the carbonate microfabric, such as stromatolitic layers, which could serve as models for developing potential biosignatures on Earth and elsewhere.  相似文献

Abstract

For the first time, growth of Mytilopsis leucophaeata, an important European fouling species, was investigated. By means of growth cages, individual shell growth of three cohorts, with, respectively, initial shell lengths of ≤5 mm, 10 mm and 15 mm, was monitored in the harbour of Antwerp, Belgium, during 2003 – 2004. M. leucophaeata followed an oscillatory growth pattern with a single summer growing period per year (May to August). Growth decreased during wintertime, but never ceased completely. M. leucophaeata has an average growth rate of <3 – 6 mm year?1. Temperature was found to be the main environmental factor affecting growth. The von Bertalanffy growth function was used to model growth of individuals ≤5 mm, resulting in L = 16.7 mm and K = 0.56. Based on a combination of growth of all three cohorts, the hypothetical growth of an average individual mussel could be modelled over a 5-year period, resulting in a maximum length >19 mm with a growth rate of 0.41. Its longevity (more than 5 years) and the positive effect of higher water temperatures on growth, combined with its high resistance to chlorination, provides M. leucophaeata with a high potential for severe and long-lasting biofouling  相似文献

Abstract

From January 1975 to June 1976, samples of Heterozius rotundifrons A. Milne Edwards, 1867 were taken monthly from the intertidal zone at First Bay, Kaikoura Peninsula (42°25′S, 173°42′E). Small crabs (< 8 mm carapace width) were never common; they were either too cryptic to be collected in quantity, or have a different habitat from larger crabs. Ovigerous females were present in all months except February (in both 1975 and 1976), but generally formed less than 50% of the total sample of females each month. The number of newly deposited eggs (0.75×0.81 mm) carried by females increased with increase in carapace width according to the equation y = -1123.56+102.97x (r 2 = 0.8213). Egg development lasted 3–5 months, and egg mortality during this period was almost 10%. The overall sex ratio for the 18-month sampling period was 1846 ♀ : 993 ♂, which suggests that females were approximately twice as numerous as males. However, when crabs were sorted into size classes it was evident that the sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1 in crabs of 6–12 mm carapace width, whereas females significantly (P<0.001) outnumbered males in the 13–21 mm size range. The right and left chela were approximately equal in length in females of all sizes, but the right chela of large males was greatly enlarged compared with the left, and with the chelae of females of comparable carapace width. Increase in the growth rate of the males’ right chela commenced at a carapace width of approximately 11.0 mm. Since the smallest ovigerous female collected also had a carapace width of 11.0 mm, it is concluded that both males and females attain sexual maturity at this size.  相似文献

Spatial variation in growth of stream‐dwelling brown trout Salmo trutta was explored in 13 populations using a long‐term study (1993–2004) in the Bay of Biscay drainage, northern Spain. The high variability in fork length (LF) of S. trutta in the study area was similar to the body‐size range found in the entire European distribution of the species. Mean LF at age varied: 0+ years, 57·4–100·7 mm; 1+ years, 111·6–176·0 mm; 2+ years, 155·6–248·4 mm and 3+ years, 194·3–290·9 mm. Average LF at age was higher in main courses and lower reaches compared with small tributaries and upper reaches. Annual specific growth rates (GL) were: 0+ to 1+ years, 0·634–0·825 mm mm−1 year−1; 1+ to 2+ years, 0·243–0·342 mm mm−1 year−1; 2+ to 3+ years, 0·166–0·222 mm mm−1 year−1, showing a great homogeneity. Regression models showed that water temperature and altitude were the major determinants of LF at age variability within the study area. A broader spatial analysis using available data from stream‐dwelling S. trutta populations throughout Europe indicated a negative relationship between latitude and LF of individuals and a negative interaction between latitude and altitude. These findings support previous evidence of the pervasive role of water temperature on the LF of this species. Altitude appeared as the overall factor that includes the local variation of other variables, such as water temperature or food availability. At a larger scale, latitude was the factor that encompassed these environmental gradients and explained the differences in LF of S. trutta. In summary, LF at age in stream‐dwelling S. trutta decreases with latitude in Europe, the converse of Bergmann's rule.  相似文献

New acetylenic nematicidal compound, penipratynolene (1), methy (2′R)-4-(2′-hydroxy-3′-butynoxy)benzoate, together with two known compounds, 6-methoxycarbonylpicolinic acid (2) and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (3), were isolated from the culture filtrate of Penicillium bilaiae Chalabuda. The structures of 13 were established by spectroscopic methods. The absolute configuration of 1 was confirmed by using a modified version of Mosher’s method. Compounds 13 showed nematicidal activity of 77%, 52%, and 98%, respectively, by a bioassay at 300 mg/l with the root-lesion nematode Pratylenchus penetrans.  相似文献

1. The diet of the invasive freshwater jellyfish, Craspedacusta sowerbyi (Lankester), was assessed by analysing its stomach contents. 2. The medusae ingested various zooplankton and benthic prey in the 0.1–3.0 mm size range. The selectivity indices for prey showed that larger zooplankton (0.4–1.4 mm) and active prey such as copepods were preferred; small potential prey, and the loricate rotifer Keratella cochlearis in particular, were almost never consumed. Measurements suggest that spacing between the tentacle branches could determine prey selection. Another possibility is that some prey are too small or slow to activate nematocysts after collision with the predator. Prey > 1.4 mm can probably escape or are otherwise too large to be handled. 3. The medusae of Craspedacusta medusae stayed in deep water during daytime and migrated upwards at night. The greatest number of prey in freshwater jellyfish stomachs was detected at night. 4. Calculation of consumption rates, based on mean stomach contents and digestion times of 4–5 h, showed that, on average, one medusa takes 190 zooplankton prey day??1 at a mean prey density of about 100 L??1. At the observed medusae density of 1 m??3, the cropping rate was about 0.2 zooplankton prey L??1 day??1.  相似文献

Novel 1-(1-aryl-4,5dihydro-1H-imidazoline)-3-chlorosulfonylourea derivatives 3a3f were synthesized in the reaction of 1-aryl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-amines with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate. The second series of compounds 4a4f was prepared from the respective 1-(1-aryl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazoline)-3-chlorsulfonylureas 3a3f and 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI). The selected compounds were tested for their activity against Herpes simplex virus and coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3). It was determined that three derivatives, i.e 3d, 4a and 4d are active against Herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). Compounds 3d and 4c are active against CVB3. Their favorable activity can be primarily attributed to their low lipophilicity values. Moreover, the lack of substituent in the phenyl moiety or 4-methoxy substitution can be considered as the most beneficial for the antiviral activity.  相似文献

Sulfamerazine and sulfaguanidine are clenched with p-nitrobenzoyl chloride and the products obtained are reduced to NaxS in ethanol–water. Novel sulfonamides (6ag and 9ag) were synthesized by the reaction of these reduced products (4 and 8) with various sulfonyl chlorides (5ag). The structures of these compounds were characterized using spectroscopic analysis (IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and HRMS) technique. Antimicrobial activity of sulfonamides (3, 4, 7, 8, 6a–g and 9ag) was evaluated by the agar diffusion method. These compounds showed antimicrobial activity against tested microorganism strains (Gram-positive bacteria, clinic isolate and yeast and mold). Compounds 9d, 9e, 9a, 6d and 6e showed particularly antimicrobial activity against tested Gram-positive (Bacillus cereus and B. subtilis) and Gram-negative (Enterobacter aerogenes) bacteria.  相似文献
