Fast repetition rate fluorometry (FRRF) was successfully applied to various studies in modern oceanography. In this study, for the first time, the seasonality of phytoplankton photosynthetic parameters in a deep alpine lake was observed using FRRF in combination with the traditional 14C incubation technique. Special attention was given to the differences in photosynthetic behaviour during mixed and stratified conditions, characterised especially during summer by a deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) dominated by the filamentous cyanobacterial species Planktothrix rubescens. Maximum light-utilisation efficiency (α*14C) was in the range of 0.01–0.03 mgC (mg Chl-a)−1 h−1 (μmol phot. m−2 s−1)−1, while maximum quantum yields for carbon fixation (ΦC,max) varied from 0.01–0.07 molC (mol phot.)−1. Higher values occurred during thermal stratification indicating acclimation of the phytoplankton assemblage. These findings were supported by FRRF-based estimates, although cyanobacterial blooms could not be characterised by FRRF-excitation due to methodological deficiencies. In general, however, instantaneous photosynthetic rates measured by FRRF-excitation correlate well at sub-saturating light-intensities with conventional 14C-uptake rates, although they operate on different time-scales.  相似文献

A comparison of photosynthesis-irradiance response curves (PEresponse curves) obtained through fast repetition rate (FRR)fluorometry and radiocarbon (14C) tracer method was made inthe chlorophyte, Dunaliella tertiolecta, grown under differentirradiance conditions. In FRR-based PE response curveexperiments, actinic light provided by white light-emittingdiodes (LEDs) was increased gradually from 0 to 1500 µmolquanta m–2 s–1 and the rate of photosyntheticelectron transport was determined at each light level. Short-termexperiments (20 min) of 14C-based PE response curvewere carried out with an improved photosynthetron, which containswhite LEDs as the light source. Irrespective of growth irradiance, the ratios of FRR to 14C-based initial slopes were almost uniform. The ratios of FRR- to 14C-based maximum rates were 25–36%higher than those of FRR- to 14C-based initial slopes. The relationshipbetween electron transport and carbon assimilation was non-linearwith increasing discrepancy towards high actinic light. Thisnon-linear relationship between FRR- and 14C-based estimatesis primarily due to the effect of physiological processes stimulatedat high levels of light, such as cyclic electron flow and theMehler reaction. The results of this study indicate that theFRR fluorometry can be used as a good indicator of photosyntheticrates from low to middle light levels, but becomes increasinglyquestionable as the maximum photosynthetic rate is approached. The degree to which this relationship is further affected bynutrient-status warrants investigation.  相似文献

During the ANTARES 3 cruise in the Indian sector of the SouthernOcean in October–November 1995, the surface waters ofKerguelen Islands plume, and the surface and deeper waters (30–60m) along a transect on 62°E from 48°36'S to the iceedge (58°50'S), were sampled. The phytoplankton communitywas size-fractionated (2 µm) and cell numbers, chlorophyllbiomass and carbon assimilation, through Rubisco and ß-carboxylaseactivities, were characterized. The highest contribution of<2 µm cells to total biomass and total Rubisco activitywas reported in the waters of the Permanent Open Ocean Zone(POOZ) located between 52°S and 55°S along 62°E.In this zone, the picophytoplankton contributed from 26 to 50%of the total chlorophyll (a + b + c) with an average of 0.09± 0.02 µg Chl l–1 for <2 µm cells.Picophytoplankton also contributed 36 to 64% of the total Rubiscoactivity, with an average of 0.80 ± 0.30 mg C mg Chla–1 h–1 for <2 µm cells. The picophytoplanktoncells had a higher ß-carboxylase activity than largercells >2 µm. The mixotrophic capacity of these smallcells is proposed. From sampling stations of the Kerguelen plume,a relationship was observed between the Rubisco activity perpicophytoplankton cell and apparent cell size, which variedwith the sampled water masses. Moreover, a depth-dependent photoperiodicityof Rubisco activity per cell for <2 µm phytoplanktonwas observed during the day/night cycle in the POOZ. In thenear ice zone, a physiological change in picophytoplankton cellsfavouring phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) activitywas reported. A species succession, or an adaptation to unfavourableenvironmental conditions such as low temperature and/or availableirradiance levels, may have provoked this change. The high contributionof picophytoplankton to the total biomass, and its high CO2fixation capacity via autotrophy and mixotrophy, emphasize thestrong regeneration of organic materials in the euphotic layerin the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Spectral water transparency and phytoplankton light absorbance were studied in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean during the Southern Ocean JGOFS ANT XIII/2 cruise in early austral summer 1995/1996. The study area comprised three zones, which differed markedly with respect to their hydrographic and planktological characteristics: the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone with adiatom bloom, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current outside frontal systems with phytoplankton-poor water and a higher flagellate abundance than in the other two areas, and the marginal ice zone with a Phaeocystis bloom. The influence of phytoplankton on spectral water transparency was assessed by two independent procedures: the pigment-specific beam absorption coefficient, aJ*[5], at all stations, as estimated by spectroscopy of in vivo light absorption of plankton on glass fibre filters, and the pigment-specific light attenuation, (kc[5]), as derived by regression analysis of spectral in situ vertical light attenuation coefficients in the sea against concomitant pigment concentrations. Values of aJ*[5] and vertical profiles of light attenuation by phytoplankton exhibited regional differences that corresponded with the three zones from which samples had been collected. These differences can be related to the specific characteristics of the three zones with respect to cell size distribution, pigment composition and biomass. The observed variations in aJ*[5] values should be considered when oceanic primary production is to be estimated by biooptical modelling.  相似文献

The surface distribution of netphytoplankton (>20 m) in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean was investigated along two transects during early and late austral summer 1990/91. Sampling was under-taken at intervals of 60 of latitude between 34° and 70°S for the analysis of nutrients and for the identification and enumeration of netphytoplankton. Peaks in total diatom abundances were recorded at the Antarctic Polar Front (APF), in the vicinity of the South Sand wich Islands, in the marginal ice zone and in the neritic waters of the Atlantic sector of Antarctica. Cluster analysis indicates the existence of two major zones between Southern Africa and Antarctica. Diatom abundance increased south of the Antarctic Polar From along both transects, which can be partially explained by gradients of silicate concentration. Small chain-forming species (e.g. Fragilariopsis kerguelensis and Nitzschia lineata) dominated the diatom assemblages in early summer, while larger species, such as Rhizosolenia hebetata f. semispina and Corethron criophilum, dominated late summer diatom assemblages. The predominance of typically ice-associated forms in early summer suggests that the release of epontic cells during ice melt provides the initial inoculum for the netphytoplankton biomass. These small diatoms are subsequently replaced by larger species.  相似文献

Aim Deep‐sea pelagic diversity is poorly understood. Local (SL) and regional (SR) ichthyonekton species richness are presented and analysed with respect to local and regional environmental factors, and biogeographical processes. Location Sixty‐six stations from the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent sector of the Southern Ocean, 65° N to 57° S. Methods Estimation of SL by means of rarefaction. Stepwise evaluation of SL and SR relationships by means of the second‐order corrected Akaike information criterion (AICc) after locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOESS) and linear fitting, analysis of saturation effects by means of slopes of species accumulation curves (log–log plots). Results Latitudinal gradients were present for SL and SR, and were asymmetric between the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Relatively low species richness was encountered for the Southern Ocean. Asymmetry at the regional level by means of higher SR was attributed to area effects in the South Atlantic. Log–log plots indicated saturation of local assemblages and dependence on environmental factors. SL was related to productivity; this relationship was hump‐shaped. SR was positively related to area size and negatively to seasonality of production. Biogeographical effects were indicated in that SR peaks coincided with overlap zones of boreal and tropical faunas as a consequence of historical faunal exchange processes. Main conclusions The stepwise approach allowed for distinction between effects of area size, productivity and biogeographical processes on diversity at local and regional scales. Productivity in particular is important in two ways. At the local scale, the link of productivity to SL is explained by a successional‐functional hypothesis of resource utilization, whereas the seasonality effect for SR reinforces the hypothesis of dependence of deep‐sea fishes on seasonality of production through changes of life‐history traits. The causes of low Antarctic faunal diversity remained unresolved.  相似文献

Krill larvae in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean during FIBEX 1981   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Summary During the First International BIOMASS Experiment krill larvae were sampled by several research vessels. The present paper compiles data gathered by of Polish, German and Argentinian expeditions undertaken during 19 January–19 March 1981 in the Scotia Sea, Drake Passage and Bransfield Strait regions. In the 1980/81 season the most intense spawing occurred at the end of December and in the beginning of January. In the eastern part of the region development of krill larvae was much more advanced than further to the west. The highest numbers of larvae were observed in the central part of the survey area, in the open ocean and on the shelf slope zones. In the Bransfield Strait larvae were most abundant in the north and north-east. These larvae appeard to have drifted to the north and north-east and occurred outside the region of the main concentrations of adult krill. As such, larval distribution reflected a meandering current at a reference level of 500 db, which was flowing in a general south-west to north-easterly direction. The Weddell Scotia Confluence did not form a border either to the occurrence of krill larvae or of adults.  相似文献

Knowledge of cetacean species composition and their distribution in the south-east Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean is scarce. During a survey in February–March 2008, systematic whale sightings were carried out along transect lines following the 5° and 15° E meridians between 35° and 67° S. In total, 67 toothed whales and 126 baleen whales were observed. Both fin whales (four animals) and Antarctic minke whales Balaenoptera bonaerenses (three animals) in addition to 16 individuals of unidentified species were among the observed baleen whales. The dominating baleen whale species in our study was humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae with 108 individuals observed. They occurred single or in groups up to seven individuals (N mean = 2.5 ind) and eight of the counts were of calves. The relationship between humpback whale occurrence and environmental variables including Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) abundance from acoustic recordings, hydrography, bathymetry and production was tested using general additive models. Only temperature increased the predictive power of the model with whale occurrence increasing with the decreasing temperature in more southern areas.  相似文献

Phytoplankton in the mixed layer is exposed to increasing levels of light when transported to the surface layer of the ocean. The photoprotective response of natural assemblages of phytoplankton can differ among community structures. We investigated photoprotective acclimation and xanthophyll cycle pigments in size-fractionated natural phytoplankton assemblages during the austral summer in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean. We estimated concentrations of phytoplankton pigments in the micro-size fractions (>20 μm) and nano-size fractions (2–20 μm) by subtracting concentrations in the <20 μm fractions from concentrations in the bulk samples, and by subtracting concentrations in the <2 μm fractions from concentrations in the <20 μm fractions, respectively. Changes in the ratios of the xanthophyll cycle pigments diadinoxanthin (DD) and diatoxanthin (DT) were determined at three optical depths in the mixed layer and during 48 h deck incubations under solar photosynthetically available radiation and ultraviolet radiation. Large variations in (DD + DT)/Chl a in the mixed layer (percent coefficient of variation >67 %) and in deck incubation bottles under variable light conditions (>75 % of the temporal variation) for the micro-size fractions suggest a higher potential for photoprotective acclimation than for the nano-size fractions. Decreases in DT/(DD + DT) with increases in the optical depth of the mixed layer (ζ MLD) suggest that larger variations in light availability in the mixed layer might predict lower values of DT/(DD + DT) at the surface, regardless of cell size.  相似文献

Phytoplankton samples were collected from the West Pacific Sector of the Southern Ocean to measure the growth rate from November 30 to December 1, 1995.Prorocentrum scuttellum was selected for growth rate measurement using the method of cell cycle analysis. During the 24 hr sampling cycle, cells ofP. scuttellum changed from 2,500 to 5,000 cells/L. The highest abundance was observed at 8:40 AM, December 1, and lowest at 11:40 PM, November 30. Cellular division seemed to occur sometime between 11:40 PM, November 30 and 2:40 AM, December 1. After cell division, DNA fluorescence shifted slowly towards the right, representing the S phase, and the majority of the cells were in S+G2 phases at 8:40 AM, December 1. Between the next six hours, a sharp drop in DNA fluorescence occurred, representing mitosis, and the majority of the cells returned to the G1 phase by 2:40 PM, December 1. We can not determine the duration time of the terminal event from this result However, the growth rate ofP. scuttellum was calculated as 0.43 d-1 with the help of curve fitting methods. This unexpected result seems to have resulted due to background noise, unsynchronous cell division, unequal sampling, water column unstability, and migrating behavior ofP. scuttellum.  相似文献

A high resolution study of chlorophyll a and primary production distribution was carried out in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean during the austral summer of 1990–91. Primary production (14C assimilation) and photosynthetic capacity levels at frontal systems were among the highest recorded during the cruise (2.8–6.3 mgC·m–3·h–1, and 1.3–4.7mgC·mgChl a –1·h–1, respectively). Blooms at ocean fronts were strongly dominated by specific size classes and species. This suggests that the increase in biomass was probably the result of an enhancement of in situ production by selected components of the phytoplankton assemblage, rather than accumulation of cells through hydrographic forces. This hypothesis is supported by the high variability of photosynthetic capacities at adjacent stations along the transects. Blooms (ca 2.7–3.5 mg Chl a·m–3) were found at three oceanic fronts (the Subtropical, Subantarctic and Antarctic Polar Fronts) during the early summer. These were equivalent to, or denser than, blooms in the Marginal Ice Zone and at the Continental Water Boundary. Seasonal effects on phytoplankton community structure were very marked. In early summer (December), netphyto-plankton (>20 m) was consistently the major component of the frontal blooms, with the chain-forming diatoms Chaetoceros spp. and Nitzschia spp. dominating at the Subantarctic and Antarctic Polar Fronts, respectively. During late summer (February), nanophytoplankton (1–20 m) usually dominated algal communities at the main frontal areas. Only at the Antarctic Polar Front did netphytoplankton dominate, with the diatom component consisting almost exclusively of Corethron criophilum. An early to late summer shift of maximum phytoplankton biomass from north to south of the Antarctic Polar Front was observed. Spatial covariance between silicate levels and water-column stability appeared to be the main factor controlling phytoplankton production at the Antarctic Polar Front. Low silicate concentrations may have limited diatom growth at the northern edge of the front, while a deep mixed layer depth reduced production at the southern edge of the front.  相似文献

We conducted multinet sampling during winter and summer in the Southern Ocean (Atlantic sector) to investigate the effect of water mass, season and water depth on abundance and species composition of meso- and bathypelagic chaetognaths. Eukrohnia hamata (mean 115 ind. 1,000 m−3) and Sagitta marri (mean 51 ind. 1,000 m−3) were dominant, complemented by E. bathypelagica (mean 19 ind. 1,000 m−3) and E. bathyantarctica (mean 19 ind. 1,000 m−3) below 1,000 m. A further six species were identified, among them the rare bathypelagic species Heterokrohnia fragilis and the subtropical Eukrohnia macroneura that is new to the Antarctic. Water depth and season were the principal determinants of abundance and species composition patterns, indicating vertical seasonal migration and vertical segregation of species. The life cycles of E. hamata and S. marri were studied additionally. Their maturity stages were vertically segregated and prolonged reproductive periods are suggested for both species.  相似文献

We examined deep-sea benthic data on polychaetes, isopods and bivalves from the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. Samples were taken during the expeditions EASIZ II (1998), ANDEEP I and II (2002) (depth: 742–6,348 m). The range between sites varies from 3 to 1,900 km. Polychaetes (175 species in total) and isopods (383 species) had a high proportion of species restricted to one or two sites (72 and 70%, respectively). Bivalves (46 species) had a higher proportion of species represented at more sites. Beta diversity (Whittaker and Jaccard) was higher for polychaetes and isopods than for bivalves. The impact of depth on species richness was not consistent among groups; polychaetes showed a negative relationship to depth, isopods displayed highest richness in the middle depth range (2,000–4,000 m), whereas bivalves showed no clear relationship to depth. Species richness was not related to latitude (58–74°S) or longitude (22–60°W) for any group.  相似文献

The faunas living in the vast deep sea regions around the Antarctic are very poorly known. This is especially true for the biodiversity of polychaetes inhabiting these remote areas. Therefore, we report new morphological data of Glyceriformia from the ANDEEP cruises to the South Atlantic Ocean and the Southern Ocean. Based on benthos samples from three expeditions aboard R/V POLARSTERN, two species of Glyceridae (Glycera capitata, G. diva) and four species of Goniadidae (Bathyglycinde sibogana, B. stepaniantsae, Goniada maculata, Progoniada regularis) were studied. Furthermore, new morphological details (especially for the previously unknown tail) for the rarely found taxon B. stepaniantsae are given. The distribution patterns of the different taxa demonstrated that some species have a high dispersal capability and show an extended level of eurybathy, whereas other species are restricted to the deep sea.  相似文献

Summary During the autumn of 1987 a survey was carried out in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean in order to study phytoplankton community structure in relation to hydrological features. The positions of the boundary zones, determined by means of hydrological and chemical properties (especially silicic acid) match with previous studies. The phytoplankton community structure was studied by means of algal pigment fingerprints. A cluster analysis of the main phytoplankton pigments revealed the presence of four distinctive phytoplankton communities in the area. In three cluster groups phytoflagellate pigments of different taxonomical groups were found which showed different relative abundance between the cluster groups. In between the Polar Front Zone and the Weddell Scotia Confluence a fourth group was found which was rich in diatoms as compared to the other cluster groups. High concentrations of the fucoxanthin related 19-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin indicated the relative importance of Prymnesiophyceae during fall in this area. The relative contribution of each taxonomical group to total phytoplankton biomass was estimated by using specific pigment ratios. This calculation showed that in this time of the year phytoflagellate biomass (especially Prymnesiophytes) surpasses diatom biomass.  相似文献

Seven Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites recovered during ODP Leg 177 in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean were analyzed to study the Pleistocene calcareous nannofossil record. Calcareous nannofossil events previously described from intermediate and low latitudes were identified and calibrated with available geomagnetic and stable isotope stratigraphic data. In general, Pleistocene southern high latitude calcareous nannofossil events show synchronicity with those observed from warm and temperate latitudes. The first occurrence (FO) of Emiliania huxleyi and the last occurrence (LO) of Pseudoemiliania lacunosa are observed in marine isotope stages (MIS) 8 and 12, respectively. A reversal in abundance between Gephyrocapsa muellerae and E. huxleyi is observed at MIS 5. MIS 6 is characterized by an increase in G. muellerae and MIS 7 features a dramatic decrease in the proportion of Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica. This latter species began to increase its proportions from MIS 14 to 13. The LO of Reticulofenestra asanoi is observed within subchron C1r.1r and the FO of R. asanoi occurs at the top of C1r.2r. A re-entry of medium-sized Gephyrocapsa can be identified in some cores during subchron C1r.1n. The LO of large morphotypes of Gephyrocapsa is well correlated through the studied area, and occurs during the middle-low part of subchron C1r.2r, synchronous with other oceanic regions. The FO of Calcidiscus macintyrei and FO of medium-sized Gephyrocapsa occur in the studied area close to 1.6 Ma.  相似文献

Pelagic communities of seabirds in the South Atlantic Ocean   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
RICHARD R. VEIT 《Ibis》1995,137(1):1-10
This paper presents quantitative analyses at the community level of the spatial dispersion of 44 species of pelagic birds in the South Atlantic Ocean. I have examined the extent to which assemblages of pelagic bird species are influenced by the combined influences of the abundances of other species and the physical structure of the pelagic environment. Results are based upon strip transects collected from oceanographic research vessels during the four consecutive austral summers of 1982–1986.
The distributions of most seabird species were statistically independent of the distributions of other species. Species assemblages, however, did occur and were correlated with the physical structure of the ocean. The study area was divided into four zones, each defined by a distinctive assemblage of birds. Physical oceanography proved to be important in determining the species composition of each zone. These relationships were apparent despite the potentially confounding influence of large numbers of immatures and non-breeding adults.  相似文献

Four ODP sites located between 64°S and 41°S in the eastern Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean were investigated to refine the Miocene diatom biostratigraphic zonation tied to the geomagnetic chronology. The Miocene diatom stratigraphy from two sites located on Maud Rise (ODP Leg 113) is revised considering the progress in diatom biostratigraphic research, diatom taxonomy and magnetostratigraphic age assignment during the past 10 years. A new diatom zonation was erected for Site 1092 (ODP Leg 177) located on Meteor Rise integrating a magnetostratigraphic interpretation of the shipboard data. This zonation was also applied to Site 1088 (ODP Leg 177) located on Astrid Ridge. The study is focused to Middle and Upper Miocene sequences. It reveals latitudinal differentiations in stratigraphic species ranges and species occurrence pattern that are related to latitudinal differences in surface water masses reflecting the climatic development of the Antarctic cryosphere. Considering the latitudinal differences two stratigraphic zonations are proposed that are applicable to the northern and southern zone of the Southern Ocean, respectively. The southern Southern Ocean Miocene diatom biostratigraphic zonation consists of 16 zones in which 11 represent new or modified zones. The northern biostratigraphic zonation contains 10 diatom zones allowing a stratigraphic resolution in the range of 0.2–2 Myr. This paper also includes the taxonomic transfer of seven Miocene diatom taxa from genus Nitzschia Hassal to Fragilariopsis Hustedt.  相似文献

This study documents horizontal distribution and demography of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) from the Southern Ocean during January–March 2008. The cruise predominantly occurred in CCAMLR Subarea 48.6, where knowledge about the ecosystem is limited. E. superba were not found north of 52°S. The biomass, estimated from trawl catches, was highest (63.09 g/m2) at a station 680 km southeast of Bouvetøya and at two stations 1,400 and 600 km southeast and southwest of Bouvetøya, 54.67 and 61.38 g/m2, respectively. Body length ranged from 19 to 61 mm (N = 8,538), with a mean of 42.0 ± 6.4 mm (SD). The overall sex ratio was 1:1, 46.2% males (13.2% adults and 33.0% subadults), 46.1% females (33.6% adults and 12.5% subadults), while 7.5% were juveniles. Trawl stations dominated by adults were found west and north of Bouvetøya. Stations with high proportions of subadults and juveniles were mainly found southeast of the island. Four cluster groups were differentiated: analyzing data on krill sex proportions, maturity stages, hydrography, nutrients and chlorophyll concentrations. Two groups represented stations located in the northern part of the study area, where E. superba were absent; water temperatures were higher and the nutrient concentrations lower compared to the groups where E. superba were present. This study shows that bathymetric features like the North Weddell Ridge including Bouvetøya are important for concentrating krill probably due to water mass characteristics and advective processes which influence regional krill demography. The southern regions of CCAMLR sector 48.6 are essential for understanding regional krill recruitment and production.  相似文献

The abundance and species composition of phytoplankton were investigated at stations in a permanently ice-free (61°S) and seasonally ice-covered area (64°S and 66°30′S) in the eastern Indian sector of the Southern Ocean between November 2001 and March 2002. Although a phytoplankton bloom occurred just after retreat of the sea ice at both stations in the seasonally ice-covered area, vertical stability of the water column during the bloom was weak at the most southerly station. This shows that a bloom can form even under weak vertical stability. In the bloom, diatoms dominated under weak vertical stability and Phaeocystis under strong vertical stability. In the latter case, ice algae largely contributed to development of the bloom. In the later observation period, a subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) was observed at 61°S and 64°S. Species composition was different between the mixed layer and SCM at 64°S, but was uniform with depth at 61°S, indicating that the SCM is formed by different mechanisms.  相似文献
