The mode of action of inert dust insecticides on the grain weevil ( Calandra granaria L.) has been investigated by determination of mortality-time curves and by a detailed study of the influence of dusts on the water relations of the insects. It has been found that dusts do not depend for their action on any chemical reactivity, some highly inert substances such as diamond and carborundum being very effective. A physical process is therefore indicated.
Dusts do not penetrate into the respiratory system, and although large amounts are ingested these seem to have little harmful effect.
It has been demonstrated that effective dusts increase the rate of evaporation of water from insects to the air, and that the relative killing powers of different dusts run parallel with their capacities for promoting evaporation. The results are in harmony with the view (proposed by earlier workers) that inert dusts kill insects by inducing death by desiccation.  相似文献

We have studied the adsorption of the Gourlay Acholeplasma virus MVL-1 to the host cell Acholeplasma laidlawii JA-1. Successful adsorption depends primarily on some unknown action of the serum factor in the medium, but evaluation of various physical parameters indicates clearly that given this factor the kinetics is pseudo first order (K = 3 x 10(-9) cm(3)/min) and the mechanism ionic. Chiefly important are the ionic strength of the cation and pH (optimal Na(+) = 0.08 M, pH = 6). The system seems indifferent to whether the cation is Na, K, NH(4), Ca, or Mg. There is little effect of temperature over the range 0 to 42 C. The diffusion constant of the virus, calculated from its geometry or its maximum adsorption rate, is consistent with its reported size and shape.  相似文献

The National Poisons Information Services (NPIS) covering the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland currently receive over 40,000 telephone inquiries a year. Over the years there has been little change in the proportion of inquiries related to each of the main categories of poisons (drugs, household, chemical, agricultural, animals, and plants). More detailed analysis, however, shows pronounced changes in the inquiries relating to specific types of poisoning, particularly with drugs. By monitoring these trends and assessing the risks of toxicity, the NPIS has an important role in informing the medical profession of the need for preventive measures and for improved methods of treatment. At present, the NPIS cannot make full use of the available data due to inadequate staffing and lack of computer facilities. It is argued that for a modest increase in funding a much more comprehensive service could be provided.  相似文献

Glycopeptide dendrimers are branched structures containing both carbohydrates and peptides. Various classes of these compounds differing in composition and structure are mentioned, together with their practical use spanning from catalysis, transport vehicles to synthetic vaccines. The main stress is given to glycopeptide dendrimers, namely multiple antigen glycopeptides (MAGs). In MAGs, the core, branches or both are composed of amino acids or peptides. Other classes of glycodendrimers (PAMAM, polypropylene imine, cyclodextrin, calixarene, etc.) are mentioned too, but to a smaller extent. Their syntheses, physicochemical properties and biological activities are given with many examples. Glycopeptide dendrimers can be used as inhibitors of cell surface protein-carbohydrate interactions, intervention with bacterial adhesion, for studying of recognition processes, diagnostics, imaging and contrast agents, mimetics, for complexation of different cationts, as site-specific molecular delivery systems, for therapeutic purposes, as immunodiagnostics and in drug design. Biomedical applications of glycopeptide dendrimers as drug and gene delivery systems are also given.  相似文献

O-(2-Hydroxyethyl), O-(2-hydroxypropyl) and O-carboxymethyl derivatives of guar gum have been prepared under different experimental conditions. Several properties such as moisture regain, rate of hydration, solubility, viscosity and rheology of these derivatives have been studied. The properties depend upon polysaccharide chain length, and the nature and degree of chemical modification. The principles of bone biology and physiology permeate all subspecialty practices in plastic and reconstructive surgery from hand surgery to aesthetic surgery. Despite its importance in our practices, the biology of bone healing and bone physiology rarely surfaces within textbooks, literature reviews, or residency curricula.
