In order to reconstruct the diet of various occupations of Middle Woodland Amerindians at Abbott Farm, New Jersey, nine different trace-element analyses were performed on bone specimens from the site. Contemporary bone specimens were also used as controls. Specimens of human bone from the site exhibited lower strontium levels and strontium-to-calcium ratios than deer specimens from the same site, reinforcing paleodemographic evidence that the human populations that inhabited this site included substantial amounts of meat in their diets. Strong evidence for diagenetic enrichment of strontium was also found. Copper levels were not affected by diagenesis, but dietary discrimination was not clear for this element. The results for lead were too inconsistent to permit conclusions. Magnesium levels were clearly depleted by diagenesis, suggesting that this element is less useful than others in dietary reconstruction studies. Manganese concentrations were greatly enriched by diagenesis, rendering this element useless in dietary reconstruction. Molybdenum was absent from virtually every specimen. Excellent dietary discrimination was found for sodium, despite significant leaching. Zinc was not affected by diagenesis, but interpretation of results was hampered by its complex metabolism in mammals. The results also suggest that the Middle Woodland aboriginal residents of Abbott Farm ate little seafood and utilized grain or other plants that contain phytate as a food source.  相似文献

Stable isotope analysis of skeletal tissues is widely used in archeology and paleoanthropology to reconstruct diet. In material that is poorly preserved or very old, the tissue of choice is frequently tooth enamel, since this is less susceptible to diagenesis. The relationships between carbon isotope ratios in tooth enamel (δ(13) C(enamel) ), bone collagen (δ(13) C(collagen) ), and bone apatite (δ(13) C(bone apatite) ) are, however, not well understood. To elucidate these, we have measured all three indicators in archeological humans from the western and southern Cape coastal regions of South Africa. The correlation between δ(13) C(enamel) and δ(13) C(collagen) is good (R(2) = 0.71 if two outliers are excluded, n = 79). The correlation between δ(13) C(enamel) and δ(13) C(bone apatite) is weaker (R(2) = 0.37, n = 33) possibly due to bone diagenesis. No systematic offset between δ(13) C(bone apatite) and δ(13) C(enamel) was observed in this sample of archeological humans. Intertooth comparisons of δ(13) C(enamel) in three individuals showed little variation, despite the different ages of crown formation. Carbon isotope ratios in both enamel and bone collagen are good proxies for δ(13) C(diet) .  相似文献

Carbon and oxygen isotopic analyses from upper Palaeogene molluscs collected in the Hampshire Basin (S. England) show that, in addition to long‐term trends in the data caused by climatic change, there is variation within samples collected from any one horizon. This variation is not attributable to diagenesis or other “noise”;. Linear trends in data from the meso‐ and oligohaline organisms are salinity‐dependent, as is a differentiation into clusters of the marine and brackish water animals. Within the marine organisms there is further distinction between taxa, controlled by micro‐environment. This is quite distinct from disequilibrium precipitation, as shell growth occurs in equilibrium with local isotopic ratios, though this may not necessarily be the same as contemporary mean ocean values. This “ecological fractionation”; can seriously affect the isotopic signal from a suite of fossils. Its existence should therefore be borne in mind when interpreting any biogenic isotope data from diverse taxa, localities, or micro‐habitats.  相似文献

Diagenesis of macromolecules is a not yet fully understood process that can be important for anthropological and forensic research. Trying to elucidate the diagenesis of DNA and proteins we investigated the process of fragmentation of DNA and razemisation of aspartic acid in human bone material. We created an in vitro-model of accelerated aging by incubating bone samples in hot water. A comparison of diagenesis of molecules in those artificially aged samples with altogether 30 historical bones from different regions and of different ages was carried out. The in vitro-model showed the expected positive correlation between the increase of razemisation of aspartic acid and DNA fragmentation, while there was a much lesser correlation when investigating historical bones. The in vitro-model showed the expected correlation between the increase of razemisation of aspartic acid and DNA fragmentation and to a much lesser extent in historical bones. This study shows that diagenesis is probably influenced by additional forces affecting different macromolecules in different ways.  相似文献

Subject-specific finite element (FE) computer models of the proximal femur in hip replacement could potentially predict stress-shielding and subsequent bone loss in individual patients. Before such predictions can be made, it is important first to determine if between subject differences in stress-shielding are sensitive to poorly defined parameters such as the load and the bone material properties. In this study we investigate if subject-specific FE models provide consistent stress-shielding patterns in the bone, independent of the choice of the loading conditions and the bone density-modulus relationship used in the computer model. FE models of two right canine femurs with and without implants were constructed based on contiguous computed tomography (CT) scans so that subject-specific estimates of stress-shielding could be calculated. Four different loading conditions and two bone density-modulus relationships were tested. Stress-shielding was defined as the decrease of strain energy per gram bone mass in the femur with the implant in place relative to the intact femur.The analyses showed that for the four loading conditions and two bone density-modulus relationships the difference in stress-shielding between the two subjects was essentially constant (1% variation) when the same loading condition and density-modulus relationship was used for both subjects. The severity of stress-shielding within a subject was sensitive to these input parameters, varying up to 20% in specific regions with a change in loading conditions and up to 10% for a change in the assumed density-modulus relationship. We conclude that although the choice of input parameters can substantially affect stress-shielding in an individual, this choice had virtually no effect on the relative differences in femoral periprosthetic stress-shielding between individuals. Thus, while care should be taken in the interpretation of the absolute value of stress-shielding calculated with these type of models, subject-specific FE models may be useful for explaining the variation in bone adaptation responsiveness between different subjects in experimental or clinical studies.  相似文献

Intraskeletal variation in the composition of carbon (delta(13)C) and nitrogen (delta(15)N) stable isotopes measured in collagen is tested from various human bones and dentine. Samples were taken from the femur, rib, and petrous part of the temporal bone from well-preserved skeletons of both adults (n = 34) and subadults (n = 24). Additional samples of dentine from the root of 1st molars were taken from 16 individuals. The skeletal material is from a medieval cemetery (AD 1200-1573) in Holbaek, Denmark. Our results indicate that the petrous bone has an isotopic signal that differs significantly from that of femur and rib within the single skeleton (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively), with only minor variation seen between femur and rib. On the other hand, there was no significant difference between the petrous bone and the 1st molar. The intraskeletal variation may reflect differences in turnover rate among skeletal elements. The inner periosteal layer of the petrous bone is formed in uterus and does not undergo any further remodelling after the age of 2 years, whereas the rib and femur have a continuous turnover rate of approximately 5 and 10-20 years, respectively. From the results of this study it is believed the petrous bone may be a new useful bone element and a supplement or a proxy for teeth in the analysis of early dietary patterns as it may reflect diet in fetal stages and early years of life.  相似文献

The rate of bone loss is subject to considerable variation between individuals. With the 'mechanostat' model of Frost, genetic variations in bone mechanoresponsiveness are modelled by different mechanostat 'setpoints'--which may also change with age or disease. In this paper, the following setpoints are used: epsilonmin (strain below which resorption is triggered); epsilonmax (strain above which deposition occurs); omegacrit (microdamage-level above which damage-stimulated resorption occurs). To simulate decreased mechanosensitivity, epsilonmax is increased. Analyses carried out on a simplified model of a trabecula show that epsilonmax is a critical parameter: if it is higher in an individual (genetics) or increases (with age) the mass deficit each remodelling cycle increases. Furthermore, there is a value of epsilonmax above which trabecular perforation occurs, leading to rapid loss of bone mass. Maintaining bone cell mechanosensitivity could therefore be a therapeutic target for the prevention of osteoporosis.  相似文献

Heterochrony is widely regarded as an important evolutionary mechanism, one that may underlie most, if not all, morphological evolution, yet relatively few studies have examined variation in the sequence of development. Even fewer studies have been designed so that intraspecific variation in the relative sequence of developmental events can be assessed, although this variation must be the basis for evolutionary change. Intraspecific variation in developmental ossification sequences was documented from the zebrafish (Danio rerio) by Cubbage and Mabee (1996) and from the Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) by Mabee and Trendler (1996), but a quantitative analysis of the patterns within this variation was not made. Here, we quantify the effect of rearing temperature on the sequence of ossification and characterize the levels and patterns of intraspecific variation in these fishes. For Danio, there were no temperature effects on the sequence of bone development across the cranium, cranial region development, cartilage versus dermal bones, or lateral line bone versus nonassociated bones. Likewise the level of variation in relative sequence (position) of ossification was low, about two ranks, across temperatures. At higher temperatures, we found higher levels of variation in iterated cranial bones and less in bones forming early in the sequence. No temperature effects on variation were found among regions, between lateral line-associated bones and nonassociated bones, between median and paired bones, or across the entire sequence, indicating concordant variability among the three temperatures. Individual bones with the highest levels of variability were not consistent among temperatures. Baseline patterns of intraspecific variation in Danio were compared to those of Betta. For both species, the level of intraspecific variation in sequence position was low and the variability of cranial bones was concordant. Individual bones with the highest levels of variability were not consistent between species. In both species, variation was widespread (distributed evenly across the sequence). We used comparisons (among regions, between dermal and cartilage bones, between lateral line-associated and other bones, between median and paired bones, between iterated and noniterated bones, between feeding-associated bones and others) to see which subsets were most variable and thus potentially useful in predicting high levels of evolutionary change. The only subset of bones that was significantly more variable than others was cartilage bones. If interspecific patterns are parallel to these intraspecific differences, cartilage bones would be expected to show higher levels of heterochrony. Although concordance across the cranial ossification sequence and among regions in Danio, Betta, and two other teleosts, Oryzias and Barbus, suggests an evolutionarily conserved pattern of ossification, identity in sequence position across taxa was not observed for any bone. Thus, variation existed in sequence position across temperatures and species. Intraspecific variation of this sort may influence the morphological outcome and evolutionary trajectories of species.  相似文献

Heterochrony, evolutionary modifications in the rates and/or the timing of development, is widely recognized as an important agent of evolutionary change. In this paper, we are concerned with the detection of this evolutionary mechanism through the analysis of long bone growth. For this, we provide a function sigma (t) for the ontogenetic variation of bone shape by taking the ratio of two Gompertz curves explaining, respectively, the relative contribution to long bone growth of (a) endochondral ossification and (b) periosteal ossification. The significance of the fitting of this function to empirical data was tested in Anas platyrhynchos (Anseriformes). In this function sigma (t), the time t(m) at which periosteal growth rate first equalizes endochondral growth rate was taken as the timing parameter to be compared between taxa. On the other hand, the maximum rate of ontogenetic change in bone shape (maximum slope, beta) from hatching to t(m) was taken as the rate parameter to be compared. Comparisons of these parameters between the plesiomorphic condition and the derived character state would provide evidence for hypomorphosis (earlier occurrence of t(m)), hyper-morphosis (delayed occurrence of t(m)), deceleration (smaller beta) or acceleration (higher beta).Regarding the phylogenetic context, the ancestral condition for the character of interest should be estimated to polarize the direction of the heterochronic change. We have quantified the influence of the phylogenetic history on the variation of adult bone shape in a sample of 13 species of Anseriformes and 17 species from other neornithine orders of birds by using permutational phylogenetic regressions. Phylogenetic effects are significant, and this fact allows the optimization of bone shape onto a phylogenetic tree of Anseriformes to estimate the ancestral condition for Anas platyrhynchos.  相似文献

Variation among modules of a single genet could provide a means of adaptation to environmental heterogeneity. Two mechanisms that can give rise to such variation are programmed developmental change and phenotypic plasticity. I quantified the relative roles of these two mechanisms in causing within-individual variation in six leaf traits of an annual plant. Under controlled temperatures, morphological, anatomical, and physiological traits of leaves produced by the same individual differed as a function of both the node at which they were produced and the temperature they experienced during development. Temperature, node, and interactions between them all contributed significantly to the pattern of within-individual variation in leaf traits, although the relative contributions of programmed developmental change and phenotypic plasticity differed for different traits. I hypothesize that these two mechanisms for generating within-individual variation in module phenotype are favored by different patterns of environmental heterogeneity; when the sequence of environments encountered by modules of a single individual is predictable, programmed developmental change may be favored, and phenotypic plasticity may be favored when the sequence of environments is irregular with respect to individual ontogeny and therefore not predictable.  相似文献

Bones have been collected from different geological sites, the sediment and the age of which being different. Comparizon between the mineral and organic phases shows the very fast alteration of the organic matrix in recent bones. Fossil bones show a loss in the organic matrices. Moreover, insoluble and soluble organic matrix alterations differ in a single bone. Implications of the diagenesis in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction and phylogeny are evoked.  相似文献

Temporal changes at 16 allozyme loci in the Diplodus sargus population of Banyuls-sur-Mer (Mediterranean Sea, France) were monitored. Temporal genetic variation within a single population was examined over two temporal scales: (i) among three year-classes sampled at the same age, and (ii) within a single year-class sampled three times over a two-year period. We observed a significant change in the genotypic structure within the same cohort during the first two years following settlement and before recruitment into the adult population. In addition, comparison of year-classes showed that cohorts differed significantly one year after settlement, whereas they became similar later on before recruitment into the adult population. The observed changes in the genetic structure within and between year-classes may be the result of complex selective processes or genetic drift. Linkage disequilibrium and genetic relatedness data suggest that these changes are due to large variation in reproductive success, followed by homogenization through adult movement. Overall, these results demonstrated a rapid genetic change within a population.  相似文献

Three experiments are reported as a contribution to the validation of the multiple treatment protocol presently under discussion. (1) In the single treatment experiment with hydroquinone (HQ) the time of maximum micronucleus response was determined to be 24 h with a dose of 75 mg/kg given intraperitoneally. In the subsequent dose-response study at the 24-h interval the lowest positive dose was 50 mg/kg of HQ (P less than 0.01). The increase in micronucleus frequencies was non-linear. (2) Daily treatments with 15 or 75 mg/kg of HQ and bone marrow sampling on days 2-4 after the start of treatment resulted in an increased micronucleus yield for the lower dose (P less than 0.05) and a decrease in micronucleus frequencies at the higher dose (P less than 0.01) with increasing numbers of treatments. At the same time no change in the composition of the erythrocyte population was observed. (3) With 25 mg/kg of cyclophosphamide (CP) the micronucleus yields increased from 1 to 3 daily doses but dropped significantly from 3 to 4 daily doses (P less than 0.01). The polychromatic to normochromatic erythrocyte ratio was significantly decreased after single (P less than 0.01) and marginally lower than the control value after 4 daily treatments with CP. The present data suggest that the response of the bone marrow micronucleus assay to multiple treatments may depend on the dose employed and may differ from chemical to chemical. The specific clastogenic action or other cellular effects of a chemical may influence the micronucleus yields of an individual chemical and it may be difficult to generate a strict protocol recommendation.  相似文献

Many research endeavors involve strength testing of long bones, frequently using whole-bone four-point bending models. Recently, diametral compression of short sections has been used to quantify local mechanical parameters and effects of treatment, but testing of biologically derived samples entails a number of added complications, such as the non-circularity of bone sections, ambiguity of load orientation during testing, thickness variation in a section, and size and shape variation between sections in a single sample. In order to quantify the effects of these confounding factors, finite element diametral compression models of a number of bone sections were compared with simplified circular and elliptical sections. Each anatomic section was tested in all rotationally stable load configurations. A high degree of correlation was observed between the anatomic sections and their circular and elliptic analogs, indicating that meaningful comparisons may be made between bone sections of disparate geometry. The aspect ratio and shape of the bone sections did not have a significant impact on the maximum in-plane principal stresses, whereas stresses were strongly dependant on the mean thickness and spatial thickness variation. Some variation due to load orientation was observed. These results indicate that diametral ring compression testing of anatomic sections can be used effectively to measure structural and material parameters of long bones, and that anatomic variation can be successfully accommodated. The ability to use diametral compression testing should allow researchers to obtain many more samples from each specimen than whole-bone bending without the difficulty of extracting solid core or dog-bone samples.  相似文献

Rough periwinkles are notoriously variable in shell characters. There are many reports of substantial local variation on single shores which not only make identification difficult but also may be difficult to understand in terms of likely selective pressures. We show that despite local variation in southern Britain there is evidence of a broader scale of change which is likely to be explicable in adaptive terms. At the same time, along an extreme environmental gradient on a single shore in south Wales we show that there are changes in morphology which are related to avoidance of water loss.  相似文献

An apparatus for cutting single or serial sections of calcified bone and teeth consists of a motor-driven shaft on which is mounted one saw (for single section cutting) or a gang (for serial sectioning at one cutting operation). The plastic-embedded specimen is attached to a cylindrical plastic holder which is in turn mounted on the machine and fed into the saw. Prior to cutting the specimen may be oriented in two planes, as well as rotated, with respect to the cutting edge. Single or serial sections made by means of repeated cuts with a single saw, may be 0.3 mm or more thick as determined by the setting of a micrometer screw. For serially sectioning a tooth or bone specimen at one cutting operation, the thickness of the separators between adjacent saws (0.5 mm or more) determines the section thickness. After sectioning, specimens may be ground and polished, with or without reimbedding in fresh plastic.  相似文献

The macroscopic mechanical properties of trabecular bone can be predicted by its architecture using theoretical relationships between the elastic and architectural properties. Microdamage caused by overloading or fatigue decreases the apparent elastic moduli of trabecular bone requiring these relationships to be modified to predict the damaged elastic properties. In the case of isotropic damage, the apparent level elastic properties could be determined by multiplying all of the elastic constants by a single scalar factor. If the damage is anisotropic, the elastic constants may change by differing factors and the material coordinate system could become misaligned with the fabric coordinate system. High-resolution finite element models were used to simulate damage overloading on seven trabecular bone specimens subjected to pure shear strain in two planes. Comparison of the apparent elastic moduli of the specimens before and after damage showed that the reduction of the elastic moduli was anisotropic. This suggests that the microdamage within the specimens was inhomogeneous. However, after damage the specimens exhibited nearly orthotropic material symmetry as they did before damage. Changes in the orientation of the orthotropic material coordinate system were also small and occurred primarily in the transverse plane. Thus, while damage in trabecular bone is anisotropic, the material coordinate system remains aligned with the fabric tensor.  相似文献

The luminol chemiluminescence reaction has, for some time, been used as a tool for the detection of haemoglobin at crime scenes. More recently, the luminol test has been suggested as a possible tool for estimating the post‐mortem interval (PMI) of skeletal remains. The preliminary results from the following study indicate that the chemiluminescent luminol test is a relatively easy and economical method for distinguishing between remains of medico‐legal (≤100 years) and historical (>100 years) interest. The femur was the preferred bone for PMI measurements using the luminol test, due to its robustness and relative resistance to diagenesis. Initial results suggest that bone that was historical in nature, produced a demonstrably weaker reaction than that of medico‐legal interest. These results suggest that the luminol test is a promising technique, albeit with some limitations, for the assessment of skeletal material that may be potentially of medico‐legal interest. Collagenic material has been extracted and analysed for stable carbon- and nitrogen-isotope ratios from Henschke Cave, a Late Pleistocene fossil locality, South Australia. The carnivore Thylacoleo carnifex most likely consumed omnivores ( Parameles spp.) with a palaeodiet of C3 plant material under a forest canopy, which was also recorded in the herbivores analysed ( Macropus spp., Sthenurus spp. and Diprotodon spp.). A forested environment supports previous interpretations of extant fauna and their modern habitats. The presence of negative nitrogen-isotope ratios in herbivores has been interpreted as non-diagenetic on the basis of carbon/nitrogen ratios and amino acid spectra, and in fact may be indicative of acidic soils. Analyses on bone and enamel carbonate hydroxylapatite from the same species support the conclusion that bone is unreliable for palaeoecological and palaeoclimatological research. However, bone carbonate hydroxylapatite may prove valuable in assessing the extent of isotopic fractionation during diagenesis. A review of carbon-isotope analyses on fossil collagenic material and enamel carbonate hydroxylapatite suggests a carnivore-herbivore boundary. The application of this boundary in palaeoecological research requires further investigation. Future palaeoecological research on fossils needs to incorporate stable-isotope analyses on the carbonate hydroxylapatite and collagenic components of fossils.  相似文献
