Temperature and salinity tolerances of Tilapia rendalli were determined experimentally. Results indicate that they are tolerant over a wide range of temperatures (11-37°C), but are incapable of surviving in salinities above 19 ‰ The maximum salinity tolerance is at temperatures between 20–28°C. The osmotic concentration of the blood rises from 255 mosmol/1 in freshwater to 340 mosmol/1 in a salinity of 19‰ T. rendalli is restricted to the warmer waters of the Zambezi river system in central Africa and southwards to the Pongolo river, as well as certain tropical and subtropical brackish water lagoons and lakes. Evidence from these experiments suggest that the distribution of T. rendalli isgoverned by both temperature and salinity.  相似文献

Summary Limnothrissa miodon is a clupeid from Lake Tanganyika which has been introduced to Lakes Kivu and Kariba and which invaded Lake Cahora Bassa. These lakes differ considerably from one another but the biology of Limnothrissa is similar in many respects in all of them. Similarities include its feeding and breeding biology, whilst its populations fluctuate, on both an annual and a seasonal basis, in relation to environmental changes. The major differences between the lakes concern the size to which Limnothrissa grows. Their average length in the two natural lakes, Lakes Tanganyika and Kivu, is about twice the average length in the two artificial lakes, Lakes Kariba and Cahora Bassa. This in turn affects their age of maturity and they breed during their first year in the reservoirs but during their second in the natural lakes. Their growth rates and performance are comparable up to about 6 months of age and the difference in their size seems to be due to high mortality in the artificial lakes where few Limnothrissa survive for more than a year. Possible explanations for their small size include the genetic composition of the original introduction and the unpredictability of the environment. Neither of these explanations is supported by evidence at present. Deficiencies in the available food and the effects of intense predation are probably the most likely causes. In both natural lakes, Limnothrissa are predatory or cannibalistic from 100 mm in length and 12 months in age, and fish in their diet may enable them to survive into their second year. The fish in Lakes Kariba and Cahora Bassa, in contrast, are neither predatory nor cannibalistic to any degree. There are no predatory fish species in Lake Kivu but there is a diverse community of pelagic piscivores in Lake Tanganyika which tends to contradict the predation hypothesis. However, the position of Limnothrissa in the reservoirs probably resembles that occupied in Lake Tanganyika by Stolothrissa which is also a small, annual species. The significance of this phenomenon is that Limnothrissa can maintain a high biomass and productivity in the face of intense predation. This trait may be of importance to fisheries management because it means that their yield can be greatly increased.  相似文献

The productivity and ecological role of benthos in man-made Lake Kariba was assessed through the use of P/B-ratios and by measuring the metabolism (respiration, N and P excretion) of the most abundant mussel species (Aspatharia wahlbergi, Corbicula africana and Caelatura mossambicensis) in laboratory experiments. For A. wahlbergi also filtration rate was estimated. The annual production of benthos for the populated 0–12 m interval was estimated at 11.0 g m –2 yr–1 (shellfree dry weight) of which mussels contributed for 8.81 g (80%), snails 2.16 g (20%) and insects 0.03 g (0.3%) respectively. The most important mussel species in the lake were Caelatura mossambicensis (4.97 g m–2 yr–1) and Corbicula africana (3.33 g). The dominant snail species was Melanoides tuberculata (1.63 g). For the total lake, also including deeper unpopulated bottoms, the annual production of benthos was 2.70 g m–2 yr–1 (shell-free dry weight).Respiration and excretion varied with temperature displaying a bell-shaped relationship. Metabolic rates in Aspatharia wahlbergi increased about 5× between 16.5 °C and the maximum at 34.0 °C and then decreased again at 39.0 °C, when the mussels showed signs of severe stress. Metabolism in Corbicula africana had a lower optimum with fairly constant activity between 18.6 and 29.2 °C, rapidly decreasing above this temperature. The average respiration, nutrient excretion and water filtration rates for mussels in Lake Kariba at 25.2 °C were estimated to about 0.6 mg O2 85 µg NH4–N, 1.5 µg PO4–P and 0.51 water filtered h–1 g–1 shellfree dry weight. This gives that a volume corresponding to about the total epilimnion of the lake is filtered by the mussels annually. Further, mussels can be estimated to remineralise % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGak0Jf9crFfpeea0xh9v8qiW7rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGaaGymaiaac+% cacaaI0aaaaa!3A2B!\[1/4\] of the total load of phosphate, and 8 times the total load of nitrogen every year. The population needs 3.5 × 104 tons of organic carbon for its maintainance, which indicates that about 5% of the annual phytoplankton production is channeled through mussels. We conclude that the mussels, rather than being an important food source for fish, seem to play a large role in the nutrient dynamics of Lake Kariba.  相似文献

Chironomidae (Diptera) of Baldwin Lake,Illinois, a cooling reservoir   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The chironomid fauna of Baldwin Lake, a closed-cycle cooling reservoir for a power plant, was sampled monthly to semi-monthly for one year at four stations, two in the discharge channel and two in the main basin. Qualitative samples were also taken elsewhere and with multiple-plate samplers. Twenty-four species were collected. Annual mean population density was less than 100 larvae m–2 in the channel, 1037 M–2 in the main basin. Three species of Tanypodinae formed over 96 percent of the larval population in the main basin: Tanypus stellatus Coquillett, Procladius bellus (Loew), and Coelotanypus concinnus (Coquillett). The principal species on the multiple-plate samplers were Dicrotendipes nervosus (Staeger), Glyptotendipes lobiferus (Say), and Parachironomus monochromus (Wulp). Temperatures of 35°C or more in the channel virtually eliminated the chironomids, whereas temperatures up to 32°C in the main basin increased the number of generations of T. stellatus from the usual two to four at Station 3 and three at Station 4. Station 3 had almost 1,000 degree-days more heat than Station 4.  相似文献

The fish population of the lower reaches of the Sanyati River was studied using multifilament gillnets and monthly sampling was conducted over 13 consecutive months. A total of 15 fish species belonging to seven families were collected and variations in monthly catches and catch per unit effort and condition were observed. The five most common species exhibited a seasonal breeding pattern, with most breeding occurring in the rainy season. The exotic Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus was found to have established itself in the Sanyati River. The results of this study were compared with those of previous workers on Lake Kariba.  相似文献

The periodicity of growth zone formation in sagittal otoliths of Oreochromis andersonii, Oreochromis macrochir and Coptodon rendalli from the Upper Zambezi region, southern Africa, was validated to test the hypothesis that a single growth zone is deposited annually. Edge analysis was carried out on 754 O. andersonii (54–492 mm TL), 601 O. macrochir (83–438 mm TL) and 622 C. rendalli (45–379 mm TL) caught between August 2010 and August 2011 in Lake Liambezi and the Kavango, Kwando and Upper Zambezi rivers. This was corroborated for O. andersonii (n = 17) and C. rendalli (n = 16) using a fluorochrome marking experiment conducted in a large earthen pond (625 m2, 1.5 m deep) adjacent to the Kavango River. Both methods demonstrated that growth zone deposition occurred annually in juvenile and adult fishes. For edge analysis, the highest proportion of otoliths with an opaque margin was observed in summer from October to December. The fluorochrome marking experiment, however, revealed that opaque zone deposition took place in winter between June and September when water temperatures were lowest (17°C), indicating a lag between opaque zone deposition and detection on the otolith edge.  相似文献

SUMMARY

Clarias gariepinus were sampled from eight water bodies in southern Africa between 1973 and 1975. Aging results indicate a similar growth pattern for most areas with a near linear age-length relationship. Between year growth compensation was found to be present in Lakes Kyle and Mcllwaine in Zimbabwe, and to a lesser extent in Hardap Dam, South West Africa, but not present in Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe.

The fishable biomass of catfish from Lake Kyle is estimated between 0,61 to 1,14 kg ha?1. Fishable biomass for all species is in the range 12,1 to 22,7 kg ha?1.

The instantaneous growth rate was found to be between 0,20 and 0,25 for fully recruited age groups. The fishing mortality appears to be in the range of 0,4 for Lakes Kyle and Kariba and 0,5 for Lake McIlwaine. All of these levels are above the yield per recruit F0, 1 levels of 0,27, 0,28 and 0,24 respectively which would normally indicate that each of these stocks is being overexploited. However, this does not appear to be the case in these tropical impoundments.  相似文献

The chironomid fauna of Baldwin Lake, an off-stream closed-cycle cooling reservoir for an 1800-megawatt coal-fired power plant, was sampled semi-monthly to monthly at four stations for six years, beginning five months after the reservoir was filled and ending 23 months after the third unit of the power plant went into operation. In the main basin three species dominated: Coelotanypus concinnus (Coquillett), Procladius bellus (Loew), and Tanypus stellatus Coquillett. The last did not become established until the lake was two years old, probably because temperatures were too low the first winter. Populations of all three species were initially large and sharply fluctuating, but later became smaller and less fluctuant in C. concinnus and P. bellus, due, probably, to more intense predation on them. Only in T. stellatus were changes in voltinism clearly evident: it changed from bivoltine to tri- and quatrivoltine as degree-days of heat increased. Photoperiod also affected its life cycle, as evidenced by synchronous development of summer generations each year. Temperature and perhaps food supply affected development time of its overwintering generation. All three species tolerated a temperature of 38 °C; their populations were kept low in the discharge channel by the current, not the temperature. Six species of Chironominae were sporadically abundant in the discharge channel.  相似文献

Synopsis Spawning of razorback suckers,Xyrauchen texanus, in Lake Mohave occurred from 10–22°C and larvae were collected at water temperatures from 10–15°C in 1982 and 1983. In the laboratory, hatching success was similar from 12–20°C, but reduced hatching success was found at 10°C while none hatched a 8°C. Development rate and oxygen consumption were positively related to incubation temperature. Direct effects of ambient Lake Mohave water temperatures on hatching success of razorback sucker embryos are considered minimal. Historical spawning temperatures for the species are hypothesized based upon successful incubation temperatures and comparison to the white sucker,Catostomus commersoni.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of dormant copepodids of 3 species of cyclopoid copepods — Cyclops vicinus, Mesocyclops leuckarti and Thermocyclops crassus — was studied in 4 small lakes in South Germany. The rate of emergence from diapause and times from the resting stage to adulthood and from adulthood to the appearance of the first clutch was studied at 4 constant temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20 °C) in the laboratory. Resting stages of C. vicinus were always concentrated in the deepest parts of the lakes and were found relatively deep in the mud. M. leuckarti- and T. crassus-copepodids preferred shallow areas in deep lakes but were concentrated in the deep areas in shallow lakes. Copepodids of both species were always concentrated in the uppermost mud layers.Rate of emergence from diapause was strongly temperature-dependent. At high temperatures (20 °C) copepodids of all species under study emerged within 2 weeks. At lower temperatures C. vicinus copepodids showed the highest rate of emergence. At 5 to 10 °C only few M. leuckarti- and T. crassus-copepodids had emerged after the investigation period (7 weeks). Both C. vicinus and T. crassus showed the highest rate of emergence at the natural end of diapause but even at that time only few T. crassus-copepodids emerged at 5 °C. Times to adulthood at 5 °C were shortest in C. vicinus. At higher temperatures this species was passed by M. leuckarti. Times from adulthood to the appearance of the first clutch at 5–15 °C were shortest in C. vicinus. T. crassus produced no clutch at 5 and 10 °C.  相似文献

Summary

Hustler, K. &; Marshall, B.E. 1996. The abundance and food consumption of piscivorous birds on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe-Zambia. Ostrich 67:23-32.

About 40 species of piscivorous birds have been recorded on Lake Kariba (Zimbabwe-Zambia) but only 26 were observed during this study, carried out in 1986–87. The Reed Cormorant Phalacrocorax africanus was the most numerous and made up 51.4% of all the birds seen, followed by the Whitewinged Black Tern Chlidonias leucoptera (26.7%), and the Darter Anhinga melanogaster (10.8%). Several species roosted or bred in the drowned trees which project above the lake surface but gently sloping shores were the most important feeding grounds. Relatively few birds were seen on steeply sloping shores or in open water. There was a distinct pattern of seasonal abundance, with birds being most numerous in the rainy season (November-April). The relative abundance of some fish species also was greatest during this period. There was a positive relationship between the numbers of some bird species and the relative abundance of these fish. The mean density of piscivores (0.05 ha?1) was low compared to some other African waters. This is attributed to the fact that Lake Kariba is relatively deep and its shoreline is mostly steep. The mean population of 25 000 birds consumed less than 1000 t of fish per annum, compared to almost 40000 t taken by the commercial fisheries. A considerable portion of the birds' diet was fish that were not taken commercially.  相似文献

The ability to utilise dietary components differs among fish species. Digestive enzymes may be used to determine the efficiency of the digestive process. In this study, the activities of the digestive enzymes in Tilapia rendalli, Oreochromis mossambicus and Clarias gariepinus were explored. Protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase activities were measured in different parts of the digestive tract of the three fish species. The pH dynamics along the digestive tract were monitored. In all fish species, the presence of food led to a reduction in stomach pH, whereby pH values of 1.54, 1.58 and 2.01 were recorded 12 h after feeding in O. mossambicus, T. rendalli and C. gariepinus, respectively. Protease and amylase activities were significantly higher (P < 0.05, anova ) in the tilapias than in C. gariepinus. The tilapias may be pre‐adapted to produce more protease and amylase to digest plant material, which is more difficult to digest than animal matter. In all species amylase activity was significantly higher in the proximal intestine than in the other parts of the digestive tract (P < 0.05, anova ). The highest protease activity was recorded in the distal intestines. This is because of the alkaline pH recorded in the proximal and distal intestines, which favours amylase and protease activity, respectively. Lipase activities were significantly higher (P > 0.05) in C. gariepinus than in both tilapias. Marginal cellulase activities were recorded in all species. It is inferred here that phylogeny and not diet may be the main factor influencing enzyme activities, as all fish were fed a similar diet.  相似文献

The hydrobiid snailPotamopyrgus jenkinsi (E.A. Smith), characterized by parthenogenesis and ovovivipary, was quantitatively sampled monthly between June, 1982, and December, 1986, on sandy bottoms in the shallow zones of the meso-oligotrophic Lake Maarsseveen I and the eutrophic Lake Maarsseveen II. The snail demonstrated a very clumped distribution in both lakes. The mean numbers of juveniles and adults taken together fluctuated strongly. Organisms in Lake I showed relatively high densities (up to 25,000 per m2) in 1982, followed by a sudden drop to values approaching zero in December, 1982, with a subsequent rapid increase in densities, fluctuating between 2,000 and 200 per m2. In Lake II, densities of snails fluctuated between 13,000 and 300 per m2 with decreases in the spring of 1985 and 1986. The various types of decreases in the lakes are extensively discussed, but no explanation is presently available. The reduction in Lake I was of catastrophic proportions, but the speed of recovery of the population was remarkable.Floating was observed only in Lake I, and only during the occurrence of the highest densities on the sediment. Burrowing behaviour was very common, but strongly suppressed under an uninterrupted dark regime. A shift of temperature from 15 to 22°C had the same effect. A number of submerged macrophyte species from Lake I proved to attractP. jenkinsi in the absence of sandy substrate, though these plants were only covered by the snail during the period of the highest densities in 1982. Temperatures of 20°C or lower were well tolerated, unlike temperatures of 25 and 30°C. Growth was distinct at 10, 15 and 20°C. Keeled individuals were encountered in much higher numbers in Lake I than in Lake II.  相似文献

Summary

Many marine invertebrates exhibit highly seasonal and synchronised reproduction, with offspring production often being confined to just two or three days each year. Several models have been proposed to explain the fitness benefits of this reproductive pattern, many of which assume enhanced offspring survival due to temperature constraints placed on fertilization and development at other times of the year. In this investigation the temperature limits and optimum for fertilization were determined for two polychaete species, Arenicola marina and Nereis virens. These two polychaete species are exposed to the same environmental conditions throughout the year, yet breed at very different times. Other seasonal impacts on fertilization, i.e., reduced salinity due to rainfall and the effect of sub-zero temperatures on sperm of A. marina, were also investigated. In both A. marina and N. virens fertilization success was significantly influenced by temperature, with the maximum success recorded at 15–18°C. The ambient seawater temperature at the time of natural spawning for both worms is around 10°C, which means that both species are spawning right at the lower limit for maximum fertilization. Salinity and exposure of A. marina sperm to sub-zero temperatures were also found to influence fertilization success, but only at levels that would not be experienced by these polychaetes under natural conditions at the time of spawning. These results suggest there must be additional selective pressures acting on the fitness of these two polychaetes causing A. marina to breed later than, and N. virens to breed earlier than, the optimum time for fertilization. A. marina apparently waits as late as possible to maximise adult fecundity and survival. N. virens breeds as soon as it can achieve high fertilization to maximise larval and juvenile competitiveness.  相似文献

Like many cichlids living in shallow tropical freshwater systems of Africa, Tilapia rendalli exhibit a marked daily movement into warm shallow water during the day and return to cooler, deeper water at night. Such movements have an important impact on the growth of juvenile fish. Growth is enhanced by this movement and is predicted to be optimal if the fish occupy water with a temperature of 30°C during the day but retire to nocturnal habitats with temperatures of 18°C. The reasons for this phenomenon are discussed using a bio-energetic model incorporating measurements of feeding intensity, metabolic energy demands and assimilation efficiencies at temperatures ranging from 18°C—3°C and the ecological implications discussed using examples from natural systems.  相似文献

Summary Unexplained high mortality ofTilapia mossambica (Peters) has at times been noted during winter in dams on the South African Highveld and prompted an investigation into the temperature tolerance and temperature preference of this species. This work deals with the temperature selected by the fish. The history of temperature selection experiments is outlined and a relatively simple technique of establishing a temperature gradient in a horizontal test tank is described. Results obtained with juvenile fish previously acclimated to various controlled temperatures showed that these fish selected a range of temperatures of 27.0°C to 33.5°C, with a theoretical median selection temperature of 28.5°C.The findings are discussed with reference to previous relevant literature. It is concluded thatT. mossambica was a thermophilic species which could succumb during cold spells in the Highveld dams.

The effects of the removal of a heated water discharge from Lake Wabamun, Alberta (longitudes 114°26 and 114°44W; latitudes 53°30 and 53°35N) upon epiphytic algae has been documented. Due to the timing of the cessation of flow the first year without elevated temperatures was one of transition. Standing crops returned to normal lake levels the following year. Species composition changes occurred, and species such as Epithemia turgida, Amphipleura pellucida, Nitzschia fonticola, Rhopalodia gibba, Rivularia haematites, and Scytonema alatum, all of which were detrimentally affected by the elevated temperatures, returned to the previously affected area, while species such as Oedogonium sp., Spirogyra sp. and Cladophora glomerata, dominant at times in the heated area, diminished in importance. The ability of Cocconeis placentula to grow at low light intensities (15–110 µEinsteins m–2 s–1) was again demonstrated.  相似文献
