The annual dynamics of the phototrophic bacterial populations developing in the anoxic layers has been monitored in three basins of the northern area of Lake Banyoles (Spain). Although two of the studied basins are meromictic and one is holomictic, chemical properties of the water are almost identical. Therefore, differences in both the spatial and temporal distribution, as well as in the composition of phototrophic bacterial communities, dominated by Chlorobium phaeobacteroides and Chromatium minus, are discussed on the basis of the structural and morphometric characteristics of each basin. Both species showed the same physiological adaptations to light intensity changes by modifying the carotenoid/bacteriochlorophyll ratio. Light reaching the oxic-anoxic boundary appears to be the most important factor controlling the growth of phototrophic bacteria in Lake Banyoles. The oxic-anoxic boundary becomes shallower as summer advances, until enough light is available for bacterial photosynthesis.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of rotifer populations has been analyzed in a meromictic basin (III) of the karstic Lake Banyoles. This basin had, at the time of the study, an anaerobic monimolimnion from around 17 m in summer or 21 in winter to 25 m, its maximum depth. However, below this layer a warmer microaerophilic zone with suspended marls is found in a chimney to a depth of 130 m.The rotifer distributions of several years are compared. The presence of large populations of rotifers at the oxic-anoxic interface is constant through the years, but highly variable regarding the total abundance and relative proportions of the species, depending on the importance of the vertical mixing in winter and the posterior segregation of water layers as a function of production and decomposition processes. Filinia hofmanni, Filinia longiseta longiseta are species with a restricted occurrence at the oxycline and are not present in the other non meromictic basins of the lake. Filinia terminalis, more broadly distributed, also has dense populations in summer at the oxycline in basin III, but disappears from the plankton during this season in the other basins. Other species, such as Polyarthra dolichoptera, Anuraeopsis fissa, Keratella cochlearis and Kellicottia longispina, also showed maxima at the oxycline in summer, as well as other maxima in the metalimnion. Populations at the oxycline are probably different ecotypes adapted to low oxygen conditions, but having the advantage of high food availability.  相似文献

The anoxygenic phototrophic bacterial community of the high-altitude meromictic Lake Gek-Gel (Azerbaijan) was investigated in September 2003. The highest concentration of bacteriochlorophyll e (48 μg/l) was detected at a depth of 30 m; the peak of bacteriochlorophyll a (4.5 μg/l) occurred at 29 m. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that brown-colored green sulfur bacteria Chlorobium phaeobacteroides predominated in the lake. Nonsulfur purple bacteria phylogenetically close to Blastochloris sulfoviridis were found in insignificant amounts; these organisms have not been previously reported in Lake Gek-Gel.  相似文献

Lobsigensee is a small kettle on the western Swiss Plateau in a tectonic depression of the tertiary Molasse. At present its maximum depth is 2.7 m. Analysis of ostracods and other organisms (Chaoborus) from a 13 m core indicates that the lake became meromictic during the Bølling and returned again to a holomictic stage during the Boreal when the lake was approximately 10 m deep. The meromictic period is characterized by the disappearance of ostracods — especially of Cytherissa lacustris and Limnocythere sanctipatricii — and the appearance of Chaoborus, whereas the onset of the second holomictic stage is marked by the recolonization of the profundal zone by ostracods not present before in the lake (Metacypris cordata, Darwinula stevensoni). A very similar case of fossil meromixis has been found in Kleinsee in Carinthia.  相似文献

The main limnological features of Lake Arcas-2 were followed through two consecutive stratification periods. Its morphometrical characteristics, such as the high relative depth (31%) and steep basin walls, enhance the sharp water stratification with the formation of an oxic-anoxic boundary at 8.8–9 m and a sulphide-rich hypolimnion during the thermal stagnation. The ionic sequence was SO 4 2- >Alkal.>Cl- and Ca2+>Mg2+>Na+>K+ and the mineralization was high, with water conductivity higher than 2500 S cm-1. It is mesotrophic with epilimnetic chlorophyll a concentrations of 2–5 g l-1 and metalimnetic of 8 g l-1. The depth of the euphotic zone was established at around 8 m. Phosphorus concentration in the oxic waters was low but largely accumulated in the anoxic hypolimnion, together with other compounds such as ammonium, silicate, sulphide, etc. Nitrate was abundant in the oxic waters and is related to the use of fertilizers in the surrounding fields. A fine-layer sampler was used to study the oxic–anoxic interface where a dense plate of Chromatiaceae developed. The dominant species, Chromatium weissei, reached a maximum integrated biomass of 121 gWW m-2 during August. Thiocapsa sp., representing less than 1% of total purple bacteria, had an integrated biomass of 0.8 gWW m-2 and Amoebobacter sp. (1%) had 1 gWW m-2. Other populations were sharply stratified i.e. Oscillatoria cf. ornata and Cryptomonas erosa. Those organisms, and mainly the cyanobacterium, accounted for the high chlorophyll a concentrations (>100 g l-1) recorded in the anoxic waters of the hypolimnion. Green bacteria were scarcely developed due to the shadowing effect caused mainly by the purple bacterial bloom.  相似文献

The utilization of sulfide by phototrophic sulfur bacteria temporarily results in the accumulation of elemental sulfur. In the green sulfur bacteria (Chlorobiaceae), the sulfur is deposited outside the cells, whereas in the purple sulfur bacteria (Chromatiaceae) sulfur is found intracellularly. Consequently, in the latter case, sulfur is unattainable for other individuals. Attempts were made to analyze the impact of the formation of extracellular elemental sulfur compared to the deposition of intracellular sulfur.According to the theory of the continuous cultivation of microorganisms, the steady-state concentration of the limiting substrate is unaffected by the reservoir concentration (S R).It was observed in sulfide-limited continuous cultures ofChlorobium limicola f.thiosulfatophilum that higherS R values not only resulted in higher steady-state population densities, but also in increased steady-state concentrations of elemental sulfur. Similar phenomena were observed in sulfide-limited cultures ofChromatium vinosum.It was concluded that the elemental sulfur produced byChlorobium, althouth being deposited extracellularly, is not easily available for other individuals, and apparently remains (in part) attached to the cells. Based upon their photosynthetic nature and the presence of a unique light-harvesting antenna structure, the chlorosome, the photosynthetic green bacteria are defined as a distinctive group in the Bacteria. However, members of the two taxa that comprise this group, the green sulfur bacteria (Chlorobi) and the filamentous anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria (Chloroflexales), are otherwise quite different, both physiologically and phylogenetically. This review summarizes how genome sequence information facilitated studies of the biosynthesis and function of the photosynthetic apparatus and the oxidation of inorganic sulfur compounds in two model organisms that represent these taxa, Chlorobium tepidum and Chloroflexus aurantiacus. The genes involved in bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) c and carotenoid biosynthesis in these two organisms were identified by sequence homology with known BChl a and carotenoid biosynthesis enzymes, gene cluster analysis in Cfx. aurantiacus, and gene inactivation studies in Chl. tepidum. Based on these results, BChl a and BChl c biosynthesis is similar in the two organisms, whereas carotenoid biosynthesis differs significantly. In agreement with its facultative anaerobic nature, Cfx. aurantiacus in some cases apparently produces structurally different enzymes for heme and BChl biosynthesis, in which one enzyme functions under anoxic conditions and the other performs the same reaction under oxic conditions. The Chl. tepidum mutants produced with modified BChl c and carotenoid species also allow the functions of these pigments to be studied in vivo.  相似文献

Oligochaeta assemblages from Lake Banyoles were composed of one species of Naididae and eight species of Tubificidae, Potamothrix heuscheri (8–1350 ind. m–2) being the most abundant and widely distributed species, followed by Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (25–858 ind. m–2) and Psammoryctides barbatus (12–792 ind. m–2). The remaining species were Potamothrix hammoniensis, Potamothrix bavaricus, Limnodrilus claparedeanus, Branchiura sowerbyi, Aulodrilus pigueti and Dero digitata, all of which occurred at lower densities and with restricted distributions.Regardless of sampling depth, maximum densities of oligochaetes were found in winter (up to 5,142 ind. m–2 in December) and secondarily in June. Immature Tubificidae with hair setae and mature P. heuscheri were present and dominant throughout the year. Cestode parasites were recorded infesting L. hoffmeisteri and P. heuscheri populations.Oligochaeta densities increased with depth, but low oxygen concentrations (less than 1 mg l–1) during a long period (4 months) in some basins of the lake acted as a key factor in reducing the density of worms and the species richness to one species, Potamothrix heuscheri.  相似文献

Comparative sequence analysis of a 16S rRNA gene clone library from the chemocline of the meromictic Lake Cadagno (Switzerland) revealed the presence of a diverse number of phototrophic sulfur bacteria. Sequences resembled those of rRNA of type strains Chromatium okenii DSM169 and Amoebobacter purpureus DSM4197, as well as those of four bacteria forming a tight cluster with A. purpureus DSM4197 and Lamprocystis roseopersicina DSM229. In situ hybridization with fluorescent (Cy3 labeled) oligonucleotide probes indicated that all large-celled phototrophic sulfur bacteria in the chemocline of Lake Cadagno were represented by C. okenii DSM169, while small-celled phototrophic sulfur bacteria consisted of four major populations with different distribution profiles in the chemocline indicating different ecophysiological adaptations.  相似文献

The first data on the ecology of rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) introduced to the Iberian peninsula are presented. The habitat and diet variation of rudd were studied in Lake Banyoles (Spain), an oligotrophic karstic lake dominated by exotic fish species. Rudd were strictly littoral and the diet was based on detritus and plant material. The most important animal prey were the cladocerans Daphnia longispinaand Scapholeberis rammneri, amphipods and several late stages of nematoceran dipterans. Rudd were more zooplanktivorous in spring and autumn and less in summer. There was also a size-dependent diet shift, from microcrustaceans to macroinvertebrates. The diet of rudd was also distinguished by the importance of plant material and various small neustonic invertebrates, particularly S. rammneriand late stages of nematocerans, showing a strong resource partitioning with other fish species. The degree of herbivory in Lake Banyoles was lower than usual.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Bosmina longirostris in a large tropical reservoir, Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, are described. Population density showed two peaks associated with periods of high nutrient fluxes. Fecundity was always low. Two eggs per female was the maximum ever recorded. Instantaneous rates of birth, death and population growth calculated from field data using the egg ratio method are discussed. The rate of biomass change fluctuated in a regular pattern, probably linked to food availability or predation by a clupeid, Limnothrissa miodon.  相似文献

In this paper we report studies on photosynthetic formation of inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) in three phototrophic bacteria. Formation of PPi was found in chromatophores from Rhodopseudomonas viridis but not in chromatophores from Rhodopseudomonas blastica and Rhodobacter capsulatus. The maximal rate of PPi synthesis in Rps. viridis was 0.15 mol PPi formed/(min*mol Bacteriochlorophyll) at 23°C. The synthesis of PPi was inhibited by electron transport inhibitors, uncouplers and fluoride, but was insensitive to oligomycin and venturicidin. The steady state rate of PPi synthesis under continuous illumination was about 15% of the steady-state rate of ATP synthesis. The synthesis of PPi after short light flashes was also studied. The yield of PPi after a single 1 ms flash was equivalent to approximately 1 mol PPi/500 mol Bacteriochlorophyll. The distribution of iron both in suspended sediment and in the water column has been studied during summer stratification in Lake Banyoles. In this lake, near bottom springs, a very fine material suspended sediment remains in suspension. Dissolved Fe2+ in interstitial water of this suspended sediment, is related to redox potential and to the bottom water inflow. In the water column, soluble iron is present in the hypolimnion of the six different basins forming Lake Banyoles. Under those conditions Fe2+ is partially removed by sulfide produced in the anoxic sediment. In addition, a peak of Fe2+ found at the density gradient level in basins C-III, C-IV and C-VI. A three compartment model on the dynamics of the processes involving iron in Lake Banyoles is proposed. The bottom springs supply oxygen to the anoxic hypolimnion affecting chemical processes of the iron cycle. The presence of phototrophic sulfur bacteria in the anoxic monimolimnion of basins C-III and C-IV can be related to the kinetics of Fe2+ and sulfide. In C-III sulfide concentration exceeds Fe2+ concentration whereas in C-IV sulfide is not detectable and iron reached values up to 60 mM. The presence of phototrophic sulfur bacteria in iron-containing environments with no detectable sulfide is explained by the ability of such microorganisms to use FeS as electron donor instead of H2S.  相似文献

Oxiclinal rotifer species show high concentrations just above the oxic-anoxic interface in the hypolimnion of some lakes. The stratification of their populations is best shown by sampling at close depth intervals and quantifying their densities by the Utermöhl technique. With this technique we were able to count males which otherwise pass through filters and more accurately count egg production. We evaluated female, male and egg numbers of the two main oxiclinal species of lake Arcas-2: Filinia hofmanni and Anuraeopsis fissa, during two annual cycles (1990–91). F. hofmanni was an exclusive oxiclinal species. It had an exponential growth phase at the onset of stratification giving a distinct spring peak. The population then maintained a high density during summer, but was almost absent the rest of the year. This cycle is repeated annually but population density can vary among years, depending on winter-spring circulation. Sexuality was always observed when the animal was present in the samples, with a maximum of males and resting eggs at the peak of the population. Resting eggs were always inside females. The annual cycle of A. fissa is displaced with respect to that of F. hofmanni: A. fissa attained greatest densities during summer, until the autumn overturn. Mixis in A. fissa was restricted to the end of the stratification period. Moreover, A. fissa occured throughout the vertical profile and secondarily occupied the oxicline.  相似文献

The microbial ecology of the filamentous phototrophic bacterium, Chloronema giganteum, has been studied in the water column of three central European lakes (Schlein, Buchen and Vechten). In these lakes an anoxic layer, termed the transition zone, was located between the oxycline and the redoxcline. The migration capacity of Chloronema through this zone appears to be responsible for the natural preponderance of either straight or spiral forms. When the transition zone is less than 1 m thick the straight form is dominant, but when this transition zone is wider than 2 m the spiral form is enriched. The intermediate situations favour both filamentous forms.  相似文献

Vertical distributions of zooplankton were studied in relation to profiles of temperature, oxygen and chlorophyll a in Roi Lake, a small meromictic lake in central Alberta. Zooplankton were distributed fairly evenly through the oxygenated part of the water column in early summer, but a gradual descent of several species became evident in June. The vertical distribution of chlorophyll was dominated by a huge peak at the 8- to 9-m-deep chemocline. the location of a plate of photosynthetic sulfur bacteria. Ambient concentration of chlorophyll was a poor predictor of the numbers of zooplankton and the fecundity of Daphnia pulicaria at different depths, and per capita birth rates of Daphnia were usually highest in the surface waters. The reproductively disadvantageous restriction of daphnids to deep water by late summer and their catastrophic decline in the face of high ambient concentrations of chlorophyll suggest that factors other than temperature and food supply are important in influencing the dynamics and distribution of zooplankton in this lake.  相似文献

The Danube Delta is one of the widest wetland systems in Europe and Lake Isacova is one of the biggest lakes in the Delta. The oligochaete community in the Lake comprised 52% of the total benthic fauna and Potamothrix hammoniensis (Michaelsen, 1901) (Tubificidae, Oligochaeta) represented more than 90% of the oligochaetes sampled. During September 1991 – August 1994, the proportion of ovigerous individuals of P. hammoniensis represented less than 20% of the total population, with localised differences in the Lake occurring over time. Breeding and cocoon production in the study period started in March of the year, when the water temperature was about 7 °C, and lasted until May 1992 and June 1993, respectively. The newly hatched individuals reached the highest proportion in May. Although large individuals were found again by the end of September (1991) and the beginning of October (1993), no spermatozeugmata in their spermathecae or cocoons were observed during November and October, respectively. Member of this cohort bred and started cocoon deposition during the following spring, after about 11 months of maturation (from April to March). A second, less intensive period of breeding was recorded during August 1992 and this lasted until the beginning of September 1993. However, cocoons from this latter period did not show embryonic growth and hatching until the autumn floods bring oxygenated water to the bottom level. This resulted in a period of rapid development followed by the mass hatching of cocoons. These specimens needed a maximum of 9 month (from October to July) to reach sexual maturity.  相似文献

Nickel was found to be required for expression of urease activity in batch cultures of Thiocapsa roseopersicina strain 6311, Chromatium vinosum strain 1611 and Thiocystis violacea strain 2311, grown photolithotrophically with NH4Cl as nitrogen source. In a growth medium originally free of added nickel and EDTA, the addition of 0.1–10 M nickel chloride caused an increase in urease activity, while addition of EDTA (0.01–2 mM) caused a strong reduction. Variation of the nitrogen source had no pronounced influence on the level of urease activity in T. roseopersicina grown with 0.1 M nickel in the absence of EDTA. Only nickel, of several heavy metal ions tested, could reverse suppression of urease activity by EDTA. Nickel, however, did not stimulate and EDTA did not inhibit the enzyme in vitro. When nickel was added to cultures already growing in a nickel-deficient, EDTA-containing medium, urease activity showed a rapid increase which was not inhibited by chloramphenicol. It is concluded that the (inactive) urease apoprotein may be synthesized in the absence of nickel and can be activated in vivo without de novo protein synthesis by insertion of nickel into the pre-formed enzyme protein.  相似文献

Potamothrix alatus paravanicus Poddubnaya & Pataridze (Tubificidae) is the most abundant species of benthic invertebrate in Lake Sevan and the only species in the deep profundal. Differences in annual temperature, length of the stratification period (low oxygen content) and bottom sediment characteristics influence the population of P. a. paravanicus in different depth zones of Lake Sevan. From shallow to deep water a regular increase of the following indices was observed in 1984–1987: annual biomass from 1.2–2.0 to 8.2–17.0 g m–2 wet weight; mean individual wet weight of clitellate specimens from 2.0–3.8 to 8.3–16.6 mg; total life span from one and a half to more than 20 years; the length of breeding season from 2–3 to 12 months.An important ecological distinction between P. a. paravanicus and allied Potamothrix hammoniensis (Michaelsen) is the much lower fecundity of the former species.  相似文献
