We tested the hypothesis that intrademic sexual selection has caused sexual isolation between populations of geographically isolated populations of cactophilic Drosophila mojavensis, and was mediated by epicuticular hydrocarbons (EHCs), contact pheromones in this system. Sexual selection and sexual isolation were estimated using a Baja California and mainland population by comparing the number of mated and unmated males and females in each of four pairwise population mating trials. EHC profiles were significantly different in mated and unmated males in the interdemic (Bajafemale symbol x Mainlandmale symbol and Mainlandfemale symbol x Bajamale symbol), but not the intrademic mating trials. A small number of EHCs was identified that best discriminated among mated and unmated males, mostly alkadienes with 34 and 37 carbons. Females showed population-specific preferences for male EHC profiles. However, EHC profiles between mated and unmated males in the intrademic mating trials were not significantly different, consistent with undetectable sexual selection estimated directly from numbers of copulating pairs vs. unmated adults. Thus, sexual isolation among populations was much stronger than sexual selection within these populations of D. mojavensis. 相似文献

Sexual signals in cactophilic Drosophila mojavensis include cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), contact pheromones that mediate female discrimination of males during courtship. CHCs, along with male courtship songs, cause premating isolation between diverged populations, and are influenced by genotype × environment interactions caused by different host cacti. CHC profiles of mated and unmated adult flies from a Baja California and a mainland Mexico population of D. mojavensis reared on two host cacti were assayed to test the hypothesis that male CHCs mediate within‐population female discrimination of males. In multiple choice courtship trials, mated and unmated males differed in CHC profiles, indicating that females prefer males with particular blends of CHCs. Mated and unmated females significantly differed in CHC profiles as well. Adults in the choice trials had CHC profiles that were significantly different from those in pair‐mated adults from no‐choice trials revealing an influence of sexual selection. Females preferred different male CHC blends in each population, but the influence of host cactus on CHC variation was significant only in the mainland population indicating population‐specific plasticity in CHCs. Different groups of CHCs mediated female choice‐based sexual selection in each population suggesting that geographical and ecological divergence has the potential to promote divergence in mate communication systems. 相似文献

Analysis of sexual selection and sexual isolation in Drosophila mojavensis and its relatives has revealed a pervasive role of rearing substrates on adult courtship behavior when flies were reared on fermenting cactus in preadult stages. Here, we assessed expression of contact pheromones comprised of epicuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) from eclosion to 28 days of age in adults from two populations reared on fermenting tissues of two host cacti over the entire life cycle. Flies were never exposed to laboratory food and showed significant reductions in average CHC amounts consistent with CHCs of wild‐caught flies. Overall, total hydrocarbon amounts increased from eclosion to 14–18 days, well past age at sexual maturity, and then declined in older flies. Most flies did not survive past 4 weeks. Baja California and mainland populations showed significantly different age‐specific CHC profiles where Baja adults showed far less age‐specific changes in CHC expression. Adults from populations reared on the host cactus typically used in nature expressed more CHCs than on the alternate host. MANCOVA with age as the covariate for the first six CHC principal components showed extensive differences in CHC composition due to age, population, cactus, sex, and age × population, age × sex, and age × cactus interactions. Thus, understanding variation in CHC composition as adult D. mojavensis age requires information about population and host plant differences, with potential influences on patterns of mate choice, sexual selection, and sexual isolation, and ultimately how these pheromones are expressed in natural populations. Studies of drosophilid aging in the wild are badly needed. 相似文献

Abstract Studies of behavioral isolation among geographically isolated populations of Drosophila mojavensis have provided an understanding of incipient speciation wherein phylogeny and ecology play a prominent role. Populations of D. mojavensis in mainland Mexico and southern Arizona exhibit low but significant premating isolation from Baja California populations in laboratory mate choice tests. These same populations have undergone considerable life-history evolution in response to use of different host plants, suggesting that behavioral isolation between populations is a pleiotropic consequence of adaptation to different environments, or Mayr's geographic speciation hypothesis. This hypothesis was tested using bidirectional artificial selection on egg-to-adult development time in replicate lines of a mainland and Baja population cultured on two host cacti for 13 generations. Response to selection was greatest in the slow lines cultured on one host, yet there was uneven response in some lines due to variation in cactus tissue quality. Realized heritabilities for development time ranged from 0.04 to 0.16, which is consistent with previous estimates from half-sib/full-sib analyses of genetic variation. In most lines that responded to selection, premating isolation decreased to near zero. Correlated responses in behavioral isolation suggest that adaptation to contrasting environments can cause secondary responses in mate recognition systems that can influence the formation of new species. 相似文献

Asymmetric mating preferences occur in two closely related species, if females of one species are highly selective against
males of the second, while females of the second show less selection against males of the first species. It has been suggested
that such asymmetry is an indicator of common ancestry between the two species, but actual observations are contradictory
and inconclusive. We developed a scenario of speciation history and asymmetric mating preference, incorporating invasion dynamicsvia frequency-dependent interspecific sexual competition. A newly isolated (derived) species may form at the periphery of the
ancestral species’ distribution by invading a new range. Only a few closely related species would be expected in the new area,
while many related species are expected to coexist with the ancestral species. In a peripherally derived species, female mating
preferences should be relaxed through sexual character release, owing to a lack of sympatric species and a scarcity of intraspecific
mating opportunities. Secondary contacts may then happen as: 1. repeated invasions, i.e. subsequent invasion by the ancestral
species into the new range or, 2. backward invasions, i.e. derived species incursions into the ancestral range. Repeated invasions
could lead to the coexistence of both the derived species and the newly invading ancestor. Backward invasions by the derived
species can succeed only when the derived females develop a strict mating discrimination against the ancestral males. We then
expect strong character displacement in the derived species. Thus, peripheral isolation and repeated invasions lead to the
relaxed female mating preferences in the derived species and backward invasions lead to stronger female mating preferences
in the derived species. This agrees withDrosophila data from Hawaii and the continents. Experimental data of theDrosophila arizonaemojavensis species cluster also support the hypothesis. 相似文献

Variation in copulation duration of Drosophila mojavensisstrains was influenced by both sexes. Males maintained predominant control, as copulation duration of pairs from different strains was more similar to that of the strain from which the male was derived, but female origin also contributed significantly to the duration of copulation. Variation among strains was controlled by genes acting additively in both sexes. The size of both males and females also affected copulation duration. Small males copulated longer on average than large males, while males paired with large females copulated longer than those paired with small females. The importance of copulation duration to fitness was tested by correlation analyses with male size, female size, female remating latency, and number of eggs laid prior to female remating. Longer copulations stimulated earlier oviposition, possibly by increasing accessory gland secretions that are passed by males during copulation. 相似文献

Drosophila mojavensis and Drosophila arizonae are cactophilic flies that have been used extensively in speciation studies. Incomplete premating isolation, evidence of reinforcement, and a lack of recent introgression between these species point to a potentially important role for post‐zygotic isolating barriers in this system. Other than hybrid male sterility, however, post‐zygotic isolation between D. mojavensis and D. arizonae has received little attention. In this study, we examined viability and life‐history traits of D. mojavensis/D. arizonae F1 hybrids from sympatric crosses. Specifically, we reared hybrids and purebreds on the natural host cacti of each parental species and compared viability, development time, thorax length, and desiccation resistance between hybrids and purebreds. Interestingly, hybrid females from both crosses performed similarly or even better than purebred females. In contrast, hybrid sons of D. arizonae mothers, in addition to being sterile, had shorter average thorax length than males of both parental species, and hybrid males from both crosses had substantially lower desiccation resistance than D. mojavensis males. The probable cost to hybridization for D. mojavensis females resulting from reduced desiccation resistance of hybrid sons may have been an important selective factor in the history of reinforcement for crosses involving these females. 相似文献

This study examined the effects of female deprivation on the mating propensity and size selectivity of male Requena verticalis,an Australian katydid in which males provide a large spermatophylax to females during mating. Specifically, I tested the hypotheses that mating readiness would increase, while mate discrimination would decrease (i. e., females would be accepted independently of their size, an indicator of fecundity) as the period of female deprivation increased. Fieldcaught males were held in isolation for 1, 5, or 14 days in the laboratory and then presented with virgin females. As expected, males held for 5 and 14 days were more likely to mate than males held only a single day. However, in none of the treatments did males discriminate among females on the basis of size. These results are compared with those obtained in a similar study on a zaprochiline katydid. 相似文献

Few studies have examined genotype by environment (GxE) effects on premating reproductive isolation and associated behaviors, even though such effects may be common when speciation is driven by adaptation to different environments. In this study, mating success and courtship song differences among diverging populations of Drosophila mojavensis were investigated in a two-environment quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis. Baja California and mainland Mexico populations of D. mojavensis feed and breed on different host cacti, so these host plants were used to culture F2 males to examine host-specific QTL effects and GxE interactions influencing mating success and courtship songs. Linear selection gradient analysis showed that mainland females mated with males that produced songs with significantly shorter L(long)-IPIs, burst durations, and interburst intervals. Twenty-one microsatellite loci distributed across all five major chromosomes were used to localize effects of mating success, time to copulation, and courtship song components. Male courtship success was influenced by a single detected QTL, the main effect of cactus, and four GxE interactions, whereas time to copulation was influenced by three different QTLs on the fourth chromosome. Multiple-locus restricted maximum likelihood (REML) analysis of courtship song revealed consistent effects linked with the same fourth chromosome markers that influenced time to copulation, a number of GxE interactions, and few possible cases of epistasis. GxE interactions for mate choice and song can maintain genetic variation in populations, but alter outcomes of sexual selection and isolation, so signal evolution and reproductive isolation may be slowed in diverging populations. Understanding the genetics of incipient speciation in D. mojavensis clearly depends on cactus-specific expression of traits associated with courtship behavior and sexual isolation. 相似文献

Sexual isolation has been considered one of the primary causes of speciation and its genetic study has the potential to reveal the genetics of speciation. In Drosophila, the importance of courtship songs in sexual isolation between closely related species has been well investigated, but studies analysing the genetic basis of the difference in the courtship songs associated with sexual isolation are less well documented. Drosophila ananassae and Drosophila pallidosa are useful for studies of sexual isolation, because of their sympatric distribution and absence of postmating isolation. Courtship songs are known to play a crucial role in sexual isolation between these two species, and the female discrimination behaviour against the courting male has been revealed to be controlled by a very narrow region on the second chromosome. In this study we investigated the genetic basis controlling the song differences associated with their sexual isolation, using intact and wingless males with chromosomes substituted between species. The results obtained from F1 hybrid males between these species indicate the dominance of the song characters favoured by D. pallidosa females. In addition, the results obtained from backcross F2 males indicate that chromosome 2 had a major effect on the control of the song characters associated with sexual isolation. 相似文献

Choice tests with whole plants and leaf discs indicated that fourth instar Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Noctuidae: Amphypyrini) were found more frequently and ate significantly more of the weed Chenopodium murale than the associated crop plant Apium graveolens. In order to explain the preference, plant extracts, plant volatiles, soluble protein concentrations, water contents, and leaf toughness of the two plants were investigated. Bioassays of aqueous methanol (90%) and hexane extracts of leaves on cellulose discs indicated that neither attractants in C. murale nor repellents in A. graveolens could account for the observed preference. No significant difference could be found between the effects of plant volatiles from C. murale, A. graveolens and a control on larval dispersal by S. exigua. Selective feeding for higher levels of proteins also was not a factor, because A. graveolens had nearly twice the soluble protein of C. murale. Water content was approximately 6% higher (by weight) in C. murale than A. graveolens but most polyphagous larvae do not typically show compensatory feeding for water alone. However, the potentially related characteristic of leaf toughness was significantly different, with A. graveolens exhibiting 1.53 times the toughness of C. murale. Studies comparing five types of larval behavior on both plant species showed that the time spent in swallowing behavior was significantly greater on the tougher A. graveolens leaves relative to C. murale. To test the hypothesis that leaf toughness was affecting larval host choice, both plants were finely ground and incorporated into agar blocks. No differences in feeding behavior were detected. The implications of leaf toughness for larval diet and host choice are discussed. 相似文献

Quantitative nutritional indices were measured in 3rd instar gypsy moths, Lymantria dispar L. Analyses of the main and interactive effects of host plant consumed (oak or pine), foliar phenology (early or late season) and larval dietary history (whether fed artificial diet or foliage as second instars) indicate that larval performance was significantly affected by all three variables tested. Relative Growth Rate (RGR) was higher on oak than pine early in the season, but the reverse occurred one month later, owing largely to the slower Relative Consumption Rate (RCR) of late season oak feeders. Efficiency of Conversion of Digested food (ECD) was depressed in larvae fed pine foliage for two instars compared with those fed oak. The interaction between larval dietary history and foliar phenology produced significant effects on all indices measured. Foliar analyses showed that, as the season progressed, oak had a higher percent dry weight than did pine. On a dry weight basis, pine foliage had significantly less total and protein nitrogen than did oak collected at the same time.
Résumé Les indices nutritionnels larvaires ont été évalués sur des chenilles de L. dispar L. du troisième stade. L'analyse des effets et des interactions de la nature de la plante consommée (Quercus microcarpa) ou Pinus strobus, de la phénologie foliaire (en début de saison, c'est-à-dire seconde quinzaine de mai, ou en fin de saison, c'est-à-dire à la mi-juin), de l'alimentation antérieure (régime artificiel de germes de blé ou feuillage pendant le second stade) montre que les performances larvaires sont fortement modifiées par ces 3 variables. Le taux de croissance relative (RGR) est plus élevé sur chêne que sur pin en début de saison, mais s'inverse un mois plus tard avec une forte diminution sur chêne. L'efficacité de conversion de l'aliment (ECD) est diminuée sur pin pendant les second et troisième stades. L'interaction entre l'alimentation antérieure et le phénologie foliaire a des effets significatifs sur la digestibilité approchée (AD), sur l'efficacité de la conversion de l'aliment ingéré (ECI), et sur ECD, RCR et RGR.Les analyses foliaires ont montré que, lorsque la saison avance, le poids sec du chêne devient supérieur à celui du pin. En considérant le poids sec, le feuillage de pin contient moins d'aliments et de protéines que le chêne récolté au même moment. La teneur en azote tend à diminuer chez les deux espèces, de 17% pour le pin et 26% pour le chêne.Nous pensons que certains de ces facteurs déterminent la valeur de ces plantes pour L. dispar. Les chenilles âgées peuvent compenser plus ou moins la faible assimilation sur pin par des RCR plus élevés. Le même comportement ne semble pas possible sur chêne, une plus grande quantité de chêne avancé en saison que de feuilles jeunes ne pouvant être consommée pour compenser la diminution de la digestibilité.相似文献

Some transposable DNA elements in higher organisms are active in somatic cells, as well as in germinal cells. What effect does the movement of DNA elements in somatic cells have on life history traits? It has previously been reported that somatically active P and mariner elements in Drosophila induce genetic damage and significantly reduce lifespan. In this study, we report that the movement of P elements in somatic cells also significantly reduces fitness, mating activity, and locomotion of Drosophila melanogaster. If other elements cause similar changes in life history traits, it is doubtful if transposable DNA elements remain active for long in somatic cells in natural populations. 相似文献

The effects of factors influencing sunflower protoplast isolation yield, plating efficiency (PE) and the early differentiation into embryoids (embryogenic capacity, EC) have been studied. Only hypocotyl-derived protoplasts divided. The variations of PE and EC in the various treatments did not seem to be linked to the protoplast yields. From statistical analysis of the data, we concluded that, the sunflower genotype, the age and height of seedlings, the part of hypocotyl used, the incubation time (from 6 to 16 hours) in enzymes of explants or of protoplasts alone, influenced PE but large variations were detected for EC. A comparison of the factors effecting EC suggested an origin, inside the hypocotyl, of cells able to give rise, after induction, to embryogenic protoplasts. 相似文献

Females of the gall midge Rabdophaga terminalis (H. Loew) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) are very selective in their choice of host plants at oviposition. In preference trials, eggs were laid almost exclusively on S. alba and S. fragilis. One single oviposition occurred on S. viminalis but none on S. triandra, S. daphnoides or S. smithiana. Significantly more eggs were laid on S. alba than on S. fragilis. No differences were detected between clones of the same species regarding oviposition in laboratory trials. Within the species of S. alba, larger buds were preferred. However, this did not explain the preference of S. alba to S. fragilis. There was agreement between plant species selected by the females and survival of the larvae. No galls developed when eggs were transferred to species that were not oviposited on. There was no difference between S. alba and S. fragilis in larval growth, but after two weeks of development there was a significantly higher proportion of larvae in cocoons and pupae on S. alba. There was a negative linear relationship between weight of larvae and larval number per gall, indicating larval competition. The negative slope was steeper for S. alba than for S. fragilis when larvae were weighed after two weeks of development. There were some discrepancies between laboratory and field data on infestation of S. alba and S. fragilis. Higher infestation levels were related to denser stands in the field.
Résumé Etude de la ponte et des performances larvaires de Rabdophaga terminalis (Diptera; Cecidomyiidae) sur plusieurs espèces de saules avec examen particulier de l'influence de la taille des bourgeons.La ponte et les performances larvaires de la cécidomyie galliforme, Rabdophaga terminalis (H. Loew) ont été étudiées sur plusieurs espèces et clones de saules cultivés en Suède. Les femelles sélectionnent avec soin les plantes hôtes lors de la ponte. Dans des essais préférentiels, les oeufs ont été pondus presque exclusivement sur S. alba et S. fragilis; une ponte a été observée sur S. viminalis et aucune sur S. triandra, S. daphnoïdes ou S. smithiana. Significativement plus d'oeufs ont été pondus sur S. alba que sur S. fragilis. Les essais au laboratoire n'ont pas permis de déceler des différences entre clones de la même espèce. Chez S. alba, les plus gros bourgeons étaient préférés, mais ceci ne permet pas d'expliquer la préférence pour S. alba par rapport à S. fragilis. Il y a coïncidence entre les plantes choisies par les femelles et al survie des larves; il n'y avait pas développement de galles quand des oeufs étaient transférés sur des espèces qui n'avaient pas reçu de pontes. La croissance larvaire sur S. alba et S. fragilis ne présentait pas de différences, mais après 2 semaines de développement il y avait significativement plus de larves en cocons et pupes sur S. alba. La corrélation entre le poids des larves et le nombre de larves par cellule était linéaire et négative, ce qui indique une compétition larvaire; la pente était plus raide pour S. alba que pour S. fragilis quand les larves étaient pesées au bout de 2 semaines de développement. Il y a eu quelques discordances entre les résultats au laboratoire et les données de terrain sur la contamination de S. alba et S. fragilis. Summary DNA-DNA hybridization was used to measure the average genomic divergence among the four chromosomal species of the Eurasian mole rats belonging to theSpalax ehrenbergi complex (Rodentia: Spalacidae). The percent nucleotide substitutions in the single-copy nuclear DNA among the species ranged from 0 to 5%, suggesting that speciation has occurred with minor genomic changes in these animals. The youngest chromosomal species appear to differ by 0.2–0.6% base pair mismatch, which is only between one and three base differences in a 500-bp fragment. The interspecific values of percent nucleotide differences permit the recognition of two well-separated speciation events in theS. ehrenbergi complex, the older (of Lower Pleistocene age) having isolated the chromosomal species 2n=54 before the divergence of the three other species.DNA-DNA hybridization was also used to compare the Spalacinae (Eurasian mole rats), Murinae (Old World rats and mice), and Arvicolinae (voles and lemmings). These data enabled us to estimate the time of divergence of the spalacids at ca. 19 million years ago. The dates of divergence among the other rodent lineages, as predicted by DNA hybridization results, agree well with paleontological data. These dates of divergence are obtained by the relation between geological time and single-copy nuclear DNA change, a relation that was calibrated by Catzeflis et al. (1987) through the use of fossil Arvicolinae and Murinae data. 相似文献

Two closely related wood-cricket species, Gryllus fultoni (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) and G. vernalis, produce similar calling songs, consisting of 3-pulse chirps. Analysis of field and laboratory recordings of calling songs
showed that, after correction to a common temperature, there was a divergence in chirp and pulse rates between far allopatric
populations of G. fultoni and populations sympatric with G. vernalis. To determine whether the divergence in calling songs potentially provides reproductive isolation between G. fultoni and G. vernalis throughout the temperature range over which these insects sing, we recorded calling songs of lab-reared G. fultoni and G. vernalis populations between 18 and 28°C. Mean chirp rate significantly differed between sympatric and far allopatric G. fultoni populations as well as between sympatric G. fultoni and G. vernalis populations. Although there was a significant difference in mean pulse rate between sympatric G. fultoni and G. vernalis populations, pulse rate did not differ between sympatric and far allopatric G. fultoni populations in the laboratory study. Considering the magnitudes of differences in calling song characters discriminated by
females of G. fultoni and the mean differences and the variability in calling song characters between the two species, the joint difference in
chirp and pulse rates may be adequate for species discrimination over most of the range at which these crickets breed. 相似文献

The effect of adult learning through an oviposition experience, and pre-adult learning through development inside a host was
investigated in two strains of an Australian egg parasitoid,Trichogramma nrivelae (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Host response was measured in two types of laboratory preference tests. In single host
tests, females reared on three lepidopteran hosts (Heliothis punctigera (Noctuidae),Papilio aegeus (Papilionidae), andHypolimnas bolina (Nymphalinae)) were presented host eggs individually, and allowed two ovipositions. Pre-adult experience affected host preference
in only one strain, while acceptance of a host was increased in both strains when they had previously oviposited in this host
species. An oviposition experience had a stronger effect on host preference than pre-adult experience. In choice tests, pairwise
combinations of hosts were arranged in an alternating grid. The ratio of host acceptances to host contacts was computed for
the whole test and up to the first oviposition. These indicated that effects of rearing host were weak or absent, but the
host chosen initially had a strong effect on host preference. Relative size of the hosts had a strong effect on choice of
the first host. The implications of learning inTrichogramma are discussed in relation to host preference testing procedures and the selection of candidate strains for mass rearing and

Flight responses of the parasitoid, Microplitis croceipes (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) to two phenological stages of spring host plants (crimson clover, Trifolium incarnatum L., hairy vetch, Vicia villosa Corbiere, and cutleaf geranium, Geranium dissectum L.) and summer host plants (cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., sorghum, Sorghum bicolor L., and soybean Glycine max (L.) Merr.) of Heliothis virescens (F.), were measured in a dual choice situation in a wind tunnel. Preflowering clover was more attractive than preflowering geranium, followed by preflowering vetch. Clover was preferred over geranium in flowering stages as well. No within species differences were detected for the two phenological stages. Preflowering and flowering cotton and soybean were preferred over preflowering and flowering sorghum. The findings could be important in pre-determining release sites for M. croceipes in the field. 相似文献
