Natural hybridization between an insular endemic species and a widely distributed congener may endanger the endemic through genetic assimilation or outbreeding depression. Furthermore, hybrids can exhibit complex morphological variation, causing taxonomic problems in the identification of the involved taxa. In this work, we used a combination of leaf morphological and molecular markers (RAPD) to establish the differentiation between Psidium sp. aff. sartorianum and the insular endemic P. socorrense. It was also determined if hybridization between these taxa occurs in the southern slope of Isla Socorro, Mexico. Plant collection was carried along an altitudinal gradient (100–800 m). We collected eight populations separated 100 m a.s.l. apart from each other; 25 individuals were collected per population. Psidium socorrense and P. sp. aff. sartorianum differed significantly in all but two morphological characters measured. Also, a high number of diagnostic RAPD markers were found for each taxon. These results suggest that two Psidium species occur at Isla Socorro. Furthermore, both morphological and RAPD markers revealed a hybrid zone located in the southern slope of Isla Socorro (400–700 m a.s.l.) with an asymmetrical pattern of gene flow towards P. socorrense. We suggest that the disturbance caused by the sheep population in the mixed stand favors the establishment of hybrids. We further discuss whether hybridization represents a threat to the insular endemic P. socorrense.  相似文献

Natural hybridization is widespread among food-deceptive orchids, whereas hybridization between deceptive and rewarding species is less common among Mediterranean species and its evolutionary consequences remain under-investigated. Here, we examine the morphological variation in floral traits, pollination success and demographic dynamics of natural hybrids between the widespread nectar-rewarding Anacamptis fragrans and the Mallorca endemic, food-deceptive A. robusta. We confirmed the status of hybrids using ribosomal DNA and assessed their maternal contribution using length polymorphism in the plastid tRNALEU intron. Genetic analyses confirmed that hybridization occurred in both directions, but the hybrids were morphologically closer in floral metric characters to A. fragrans and exhibited reduced among-individual variation in floral traits. No obvious secreting papillae were present in the hybrid spur, which more closely resembled the spur of non-rewarding A. robusta, reinforcing field observations that hybrids were probably nectarless. Compared with both rewarding and deceptive parents, the hybrids were less attractive for pollinators, most likely because of the absence of significant reward and of their combination of contrasting parental floral advertisements. In spite of its low pollination success, the hybrid population is presently expanding alongside the endemic A. robusta, suggesting that it follows the demographic dynamics of the parental species.  相似文献

Hybridization between the introduced and native plants may enhance invasiveness, especially in asexually reproducing species. Hybrid apomictic dandelions between native (Taraxacum platycarpum and T. japonicum) and exotic (T. officinale) species are distributed widely throughout Japan. To estimate the origin(s) and dispersal of the hybrids, we investigated the hybridization rate and genotypic diversity in mixed populations of T. japonicum, T. officinale and their hybrids at two green parks in western Japan. Among the plants identified as exotics from flower morphology, 86–96% were hybrids by genetic analysis. Genetic data with simple sequence repeat markers revealed a high clonal diversity of the hybrid both within and between populations, indicating multiple origins. A hybrid seed was found from among the 1891 seeds collected from T. japonicum in the parks, indicating ongoing hybridization in the field. T. officinale and hybrids were genetically differentiated between the two parks independent of the ploidy level; the allele frequency of T. officinale and tri- and tetraploid hybrids were similar within each park but different between the two parks. This suggests that the origins of hybrids were similar within the park but different between the parks. Overall, our results suggest that hybridization, including backcross, is an ongoing process, and that genetically diverse hybrids with various origins have been spreading in western Japan, probably because hybridization enhanced invasiveness at native habitat.  相似文献

Cytogenetic investigations have been made in the fourPetrorhagia species and hybrids of the sectionKohlrauschia. The three diploid species show close similarities in chromosome number, size and morphology, with the exception ofP. velutina, where one pair of metacentric chromosomes is represented by a pair of telocentrics. Meiotic studies in hybrids indicate close genomic homology between the diploid species and also between the two floral forms ofP. prolifera. The tetraploidP. nanteuilii behaves as an allotetraploid forming only bivalents at meiosis and results suggest thatP. velutina andP. prolifera are the diploid progenitors of this species. Since meiosis in diploid and triploid hybrids results in extensive intergenomic pairing it is concluded that the natural tetraploid has a bivalent promoting mechanism that prevents pairing between the genomes of its diploid progenitors.  相似文献

The current position regarding reports in the literature on interspecific hybridization in the pulses is confused. Two major reasons can he advanced in explanation. The first is that frequently conspecific wild and cultivated forms have received different binomials and crosses between such are frequently regarded as interspecific hybrids. The second arises from mistaken interpretation of results of attempted interspecific hybridization when progeny strongly resembling the maternal parent are produced. It is suggested that these progeny might have been produced by failures in emasculation or rare accidental apomixis. All cultigens of the generaArachis, Cajanus, Cicer, Phaseolus andPisum are able to some extent to produce viable true interspecific hybrids as are the Asiatic forms ofVigna. True interspecific hybrids have not been produced withVicia faba nor withVigna unguiculata the cowpea.  相似文献

Phlox pilosa ssp.pilosa andP. pilosa ssp.fulgida form a zone of secondary intergradation extending from northern Illinois and Indiana along the prairie-forest border to southwestern Missouri. The structure of the zone was analyzed in Illinois and Indiana. Trichome morphology offered the only diagnostic characteristic. Character gradients in the zone are highly irregular and steeply sloping. Closely adjacent populations often have disparate phenotype distributions. Most populations are strongly skewed toward the parental ends of the morphological spectrum. The properties of the zone are attributed to genome incompatibility, which is seen in the crossability barriers between the two subspecies and between the subspecies and hybrids, a reduction in pollen fertility, anther size and fecundity in hybrids, and the formation of multiple nucleoli in the hybrids. Subspeciesfulgida appears to be the primary recipient of alien gene flow. However, the position of the zone ostensibly is stabilized by the presence of an ecological barrier.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The potential for gene exchange between species with different ploidy levels has long been recognized, but only a few studies have tested this hypothesis in situ and most of them focused on not more than two co-occurring species. In this study, we examined hybridization patterns in two sites containing three species of the genus Dactylorhiza (diploid D. incarnata and D. fuchsii and their allotetraploid derivative D. praetermissa).

Methods

To compare the strength of reproductive barriers between diploid species, and between diploid and tetraploid species, crossing experiments were combined with morphometric and molecular analyses using amplified fragment length polymorphism markers, whereas flow cytometric analyses were used to verify the hybrid origin of putative hybrids.

Key Results

In both sites, extensive hybridization was observed, indicating that gene flow between species is possible within the investigated populations. Bayesian assignment analyses indicated that the majority of hybrids were F1 hybrids, but in some cases triple hybrids (hybrids with three species as parents) were observed, suggesting secondary gene flow. Crossing experiments showed that only crosses between pure species yielded a high percentage of viable seeds. When hybrids were involved as either pollen-receptor or pollen-donor, almost no viable seeds were formed, indicating strong post-zygotic reproductive isolation and high sterility.

Conclusions

Strong post-mating reproductive barriers prevent local breakdown of species boundaries in Dactylorhiza despite frequent hybridization between parental species. However, the presence of triple hybrids indicates that in some cases hybridization may extend the F1 generation.  相似文献

Protoplasts isolated from cell cultures of chlorophyll-deficient Nicotiana rustica cv. chlorotica and wild-type N. sylvestris were fused. The scheme for selection of somatic hybrids was based on the inability of the protoplast-derived colonies of the parental species to turn green; N. sylvestris protoplasts also had a very low plating efficiency in the medium employed. A total of 777 green colonies which were presumptive hybrids were isolated within four weeks of the fusion experiments. One hundred and eight green colonies formed shoots in vitro and 16 lines were rooted and grown in the greenhouse. Each of these hybrid plants displayed vegetative and floral traits intermediate to those of the parental species, except for plant height which in almost all cases was greater in the hybrids. Isozyme analyses by gel electrophoresis and isoelectric focussing of the small subunit of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RUBPCase) demonstrated that the nuclear genomes of both parents were expressed by the hybrids. Each of the eight somatic hybrid plants analyzed expressed only the N. rustica chloroplast genome as shown by isoelectric focussing of the large subunit of RUBPCase. This study demonstrated the value of N. rustica cv. chlorotica as a parental line in somatic hybridization with N. sylvestris and it might have widespread use with wild-type lines of other species.  相似文献

Somatic cell hybrids between cells of widely divergent mammalian species display a range of chromosomal and genetic anomalies which may be the equivalent of the “genomic shock” phenomena observed in many plant and animal interspecific hybrids. Mouse-kangaroo hybrids show extreme segregation and fragmentation of the kangaroo chromosomes. Here 1 show that, in addition to the chromosomal instability, some hybrids display unstable expression of three genes borne on the kangaroo active maternal X chromosome. These genes (HPRT, G6PD andPGK) may be co-ordinately inactivated at high frequency, then reactivated once more. I suggest that this reversible inactivation in interspecific hybrids may be the result of an unstable change at an X inactivation centre located in the kangaroo Xq.  相似文献

A systematic treatment based on genetic, biochemical, and morphological studies is presented for the 11 recognized taxa ofHulsea. A uniform diploid complement of 38 chromosomes was found in the 37 populations examined, including all species and representing first reports forH. brevifolia, H. californica, andH. mexicana. Thirteen flavonoid compounds, based on the aglycones quercetin, apigenin, cyanidin, and the 4′-O-methyl ether of luteolin, were detected inHulsea. Patterns of the flavonoid compounds are discussed with respect to the systematic treatment. The results of 595 synthetic crosses indicate thatHulsea species are self-incompatible, relatively cross-compatible, and that their F1 hybrids are relatively fertile. Heterozygosity for one or two translocations is reported for 11 interspecific and intersubspecific hybrid combinations.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Although there is evidence that both allopolyploid and homoploid hybridization lead to rapid genomic changes, much less is known about hybrids from parents with different basic numbers without further chromosome doubling. Two natural hybrids, Narcissus × alentejanus (2n = 19) and N. × perezlarae (2n = 29), originated by one progenitor (N. cavanillesii, 2n = 28) and two others (N. serotinus, 2n = 10 and N. miniatus, 2n = 30, respectively) allow us to study how DNA content and composition varies in such hybrids.

Methods

Flow cytometry measurements with two staining techniques, PI and DAPI, were used to estimate 2C values and base composition (AT/GC ratio) in 390 samples from 54 wild populations of the two natural hybrids and their parental species. In addition, 20 synthetic F1 hybrid individuals were also studied for comparison.

Key Results

Natural hybrids presented 2C values intermediate between those found in their parental species, although intra-population variance was very high in both hybrids, particularly for PI. Genome size estimated from DAPI was higher in synthetic hybrids than in hybrids from natural populations. In addition, differences for PI 2C values were detected between synthetic reciprocal crosses, attributable to maternal effects, as well as between natural hybrids and those synthetic F1 hybrids in which N. cavanillesii acted as a mother.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that natural hybrid populations are composed of a mixture of markedly different hybrid genotypes produced either by structural chromosome changes, consistent with classic cytogenetic studies in Narcissus, or by transposon-mediated events.  相似文献

Supernumerary (B) chromosomes and small aberrant chromosomes were detected in Lilium hybrids and characterized through genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) and florescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Two small, supernumerary or B chromosomes were detected as extra chromosomes in a tetraploid plant derived from chromosome doubling of a hybrid (2n = 2x = 24) between a cultivar of the Longiflorum (L) and the Trumpet (T) group. When this tetraploid LLTT hybrid was crossed with a triploid LLO hybrid (O = Oriental), the B chromosome was transmitted to 73.4 % of the progenies. Based on GISH and FISH characterization, it was shown that the B chromosome consisted of two identical arms, with 5S rDNA hybridizing to the majority of it, which were flanked by normal telomeres, suggesting that this is an isochromosome. In another population, which is a backcross progeny between a F1 hybrid of Longiflorum × Asiatic (LA) and its Asiatic parent, the former produced functional 2n gametes which resulted in a triploid LAA progeny (2n = 3x = 36), in which three exceptional plants possessed 35 normal chromosomes and a small aberrant chromosome instead of the expected normal number of 36. In all three cases, the small aberrant chromosomes were isochromosomes which had obviously originated during the first backcross generation. These three chromosomes showed normal telomeres and mitosis. In addition, one of the new generated chromosomes possessed two 45S rDNA sites in the proximal positions. These new arisen isochromosomes were proposed to originate from centric breakage and fusion of two short arms of the missing chromosome in three genotypes, respectively, based on the comparison of arm lengths as well as rDNA loci. Their relevance to the origin of Bs is discussed.  相似文献

The rock bass (Ambloplites rupestris) is a popular sport-fish native to the Mississippi and Great Lakes basins of North America. The species has been widely introduced outside its native range, including into Atlantic-slope streams of Virginia where it may hybridize with an imperiled, similar-looking congener, the Roanoke bass (Ambloplites cavifrons). In this study, we identified and evaluated novel molecular markers to facilitate identification of these species and study the extent of hybridization. Using molecular libraries developed from A. rupestris, we identified a suite of candidate nuclear microsatellite loci, synthesized primer sets, and tested these markers for amplification and polymorphism in populations of both species. We then calculated standard diversity statistics within and differentiation statistics between species, the latter providing an indication of marker power for distinguishing the species and their hybrids. Additionally, we evaluated our efficiency for identifying hybrids by classifying simulated genotypes of known ancestry. Eleven loci were polymorphic (2–22 alleles per locus) and reliably amplified in both species. Multilocus genetic differentiation between A. cavifrons and A. rupestris was quite high (F ST  = 0.66; D LR  = 19.3), indicating the high statistical power of this marker set for species and hybrid identification. Analyses of simulated data suggested these markers reliably distinguish between hybrids and non-hybrids, as well as between F1 hybrids and backcrossed individuals. This panel of 11 loci should prove useful for understanding patterns of hybridization between A. rupestris and A. cavifrons. As the first microsatellite markers developed for Ambloplites, these markers also should prove broadly useful for population genetic studies of this genus.  相似文献

Morphometric studies are useful for delineating the shapes of various populations and species over geographical ranges and as evidence of regional differences in crustaceans. Hydrological fluctuations in a floodplain system modulate the dispersal and presence of decapods among habitats and constitute an important macrofactor that regulate other environmental variables and which could explain the richness, distribution and abundance of organisms that live in these systems. Morphological variations among populations of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium borellii in a floodplain system at a microgeographical scale were studied using geometric morphometrics. Carapace structure was represented using 16 digitised landmarks. Allometry and sexual dimorphism was tested. Variation in shape was explored via Principal Component Analysis. Canonical Variate Analyses was applied to compare the differences in shape between species’ populations. The correlations and covariations among shapes and hydrometric level, current velocity, geographical location and hydrologic distances were analysed. The average carapace shape was different between sexes in all sites. Populations that were near each other in terms of hydrological distance had similar shapes, but all of the populations differed in shape from the farthest population. The environmental variables were not good predictors of the carapace shape. Instead, the shape was strongly related to the hydrologic distance and geographical location. The swimming characteristics of these prawns and their passive movements, together with the dynamics of a floodplain system, explain the low morphological variation between populations in this study. The dynamic characteristics of the system influence the dispersal of the prawns and allow populations to remain connected.  相似文献

Background and aims

Noccaea caerulescens is a model plant for the understanding of trace metal accumulation and a source of cultivars for phytoextraction. The aim of this study was to investigate natural variation for trace metal accumulation, major nutrient uptake and growth parameters in 22 populations. The correlations among these traits were particularly examined to better understand the eco-physiology and the phytoextraction potential of the species.

Methods

Populations from three edaphic groups, i.e. calamine (CAL), serpentine (SERP) and non metalliferous (NMET) sites were grown in hydroponics for seven weeks at moderate trace metal exposure. Growth indicators, element contents and correlations between these variables were compared.

Results

All the phenotypic characteristics showed a wide variability among groups and populations. The SERP populations showed a smaller plant size, higher cation contents and strong correlations between all element concentrations. NMET populations did not differ in plant size from the CAL ones, but had higher Zn and Ni contents. The CAL populations showed higher Cd and Mn accumulations and lower Ca contents. The trade-off between biomass production and Cd, Ni and Zn accumulation was high in SERP populations and low in the CAL and NMET ones.

Conclusions

N. caerulescens is a genetically diverse species, showing specific features depending on the group and the population. These features may reflect the wide adaptive capacities of the species, and also reveal promising potential for phytoextraction of Cd, Ni and Zn.  相似文献

Hybrids ofAletris lutea XA. obovata were found to occur extensively throughout the area of overlapping distribution of the two species in Florida and in southern Georgia. Hybrids were found only in disturbed habitats near the parental species. Colonization and dispersal of species and of hybrids were probably implemented by roadside maintenance operations. Fertility was high despite the high incidence of quadrivalent formation in parent and hybrid plants. Since all quadrivalents observed were aligned adjacently and since fertility is relatively high, it is suggested that duplicated chromosomes were present. It is further suggested thatAletris represents a tetraploid with a base number ofx = 6 or 7 that either lost or gained one pair of chromosomes to result inn = 13. Introgression in disturbed habitats is favored by zonation of plants in hybrid swarms, phenology of parents and hybrids, and pollinator behavior.  相似文献
