The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of inoculating granules on reducing membrane fouling. In order to evaluate the differences in performance between flocculent sludge and aerobic granular sludge in membrane reactors (MBRs), two reactors were run in parallel and various parameters related to membrane fouling were measured. The results indicated that specific resistance to the fouling layer was five times greater than that of mixed liquor sludge in the granular MBR. The floc sludge more easily formed a compact layer on the membrane surface, and increased membrane resistance. Specifically, the floc sludge had a higher moisture content, extracellular polymeric substances concentration, and negative surface charge. In contrast, aerobic granules could improve structural integrity and strength, which contributed to the preferable permeate performance. Therefore, inoculating aerobic granules in a MBR presents an effective method of reducing the membrane fouling associated with floc sludge the perspective of from the morphological characteristics of microbial aggregates.  相似文献

This paper is designed to critically review the recent developments of membrane bio-technologies for sludge reduction and treatment by covering process fundamentals, performances (sludge reduction efficiency, membrane fouling, pollutant removal, etc.) and key operational parameters. The future perspectives of the hybrid membrane processes for sludge reduction and treatment are also discussed. For sludge reduction using membrane bioreactors (MBRs), literature review shows that biological maintenance metabolism, predation on bacteria, and uncoupling metabolism through using oxic-settling-anaerobic (OSA) process are promising ways that can be employed in full-scale applications. Development of control methods for worm proliferation is in great need of, and a good sludge reduction and MBR performance can be expected if worm growth is properly controlled. For lysis-cryptic sludge reduction method, improvement of oxidant dispersion and increase of the interaction with sludge cells can enhance the lysis efficiency. Green uncoupler development might be another research direction for uncoupling metabolism in MBRs. Aerobic hybrid membrane system can perform well for sludge thickening and digestion in small- and medium-sized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and pilot-scale/full-scale applications have been reported. Anaerobic membrane digestion (AMD) process is a very competitive technology for sludge stabilization and digestion. Use of biogas recirculation for fouling control can be a powerful way to decrease the energy requirements for AMD process. Future research efforts should be dedicated to membrane preparation for high biomass applications, process optimization, and pilot-scale/full-scale tracking research in order to push forward the real and wide applications of the hybrid membrane systems for sludge minimization and treatment.  相似文献

Non-woven fabric filter- (NWFF) and microfilter-MBR modules were made using 100?μm polypropylene and 0.25?μm polyethylene materials, respectively. The performances and mechanisms of the two processes were investigated, including additional batch filtration tests to find the function of the dynamic gel layer on the membrane surface. The HRT of both MBRs was 9?h and the operating permeate flux was 13?L/m(2)/h. The two MBRs consisted of an anoxic and aerobic reactor. The NWFF or microfilter (MF) was submerged in each of the aerobic reactors. The two MBRs showed similar performances for the removal of organic matters, suspended solids and nitrogen. Cake formation on the NWFF contributed to major resistance, while the gel layer on the microfilter or internal fouling of the pores played a key role in the fouling of the membrane surface. The amount of soluble extracellular polymer substances (EPS) (13?mg/L) of the attached sludge on the NWFF surface was larger than that (11?mg/L) of that suspended sludge. Consequently, the functional gel layer for the coarse and microfilter is established based on the relationship among the EPS, transmembrane pressure and MLSS.  相似文献

A membrane bioreactor (MBR) and an activated sludge process (ASP) were operated side by side to evaluate the change of sludge supernatant characteristics and the evolution of the sludge fouling propensity. The MBR sludge had a higher organic concentration and more biopolymer clusters (BPC) in the supernatant compared with ASP. BPC increased in both concentration and size in the MBR. The results show that the change in the liquid-phase property had a profound effect on the sludge fouling propensity. MBR operation transformed typical activated sludge to MBR sludge with a higher fouling propensity. Distinct from the ASP, membrane filtration retained soluble microbial products (SMP) within the MBR, and the vast membrane surface provided a unique environment for the transformation of SMP to large size BPC, leading to further sludge deposition on the membrane surface. Thus, membrane filtration is the crucial cause of the inevitable fouling problem in submerged MBRs.  相似文献

Activated sludge is one of the most widely implemented technologies for municipal wastewater treatment. Yet, more restrictive environmental standards demand for more efficient technologies. Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is a promising alternative in this context since this technology has shown potential for simultaneous organic matter and nutrient removal using smaller bioreactors and consuming less energy. However, despite such engaging claims, only ca. 40 full-scale AGS systems have been installed worldwide after 30 years of development. This reduced implementation suggests the existence of significant bottlenecks for this technology, which currently only have partially been overcome. This overview aims to analyze the recent progress in R&D concerning aerobic sludge granulation for municipal wastewater treatment via the analysis of research articles and invention patents as well as to elucidate exiting technological gaps and development opportunities. Culturing methods aiming at fast granulation, long-term stability and excellent process performance are of utmost interest for promoting massive implementation of full-scale AGS systems. Moreover, the recovery of biomaterials from waste sludge could contribute to the implementation of the biorefinery paradigm in wastewater treatment plants.

Soluble extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) cause membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs), correlated with MBR sludge characteristics. Effects of F/M ratios on the evolution of soluble EPSs, fouling propensity of supernatants, and sludge metabolic activity were measured in this study in a two-period sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The experimental results show that fouling propensity was directly correlated with soluble-EPS concentration and composition. Sludge that had entirely lost active cells by long-term starvation released 64.4 ± 0.9 mg/L of humic acids, which caused a rapid increase in membrane resistance (40.67 ± 2.24 × 1011 m−1) during fouling tests. During short-term starvation, induced by incubation at a normal to low F/M ratio of 0.05 d−1, sludge can use previously secreted utilization-associated products (UAPs) to maintain endogenous respiration. Therefore, the strategies of accumulating sludge and prolonging sludge retention time in MBRs may create long-term starvation and promote membrane fouling.  相似文献

The impact of removable and irremovable fouling on the retention of viral and bacterial indicators by the submerged microfiltration membrane in an MBR pilot plant was evaluated. Escherichia coli, sulphite-reducing Clostridium spores, somatic coliphages and F-specific RNA bacteriophages were used as indicators. The membrane demonstrated almost complete removal of E. coli and sulphite-reducing Clostridium spores. However, there was no correlation with membrane fouling. The phage removal varied in accordance with the irremovable fouling, rising from 2.6 to 5.6 log10 units as the irremovable fouling increased (measured by the change in the transmembrane pressure). In contrast, removable fouling did not have any effect on the retention of viruses by the membrane. These results indicate that irremovable membrane fouling may affect the removal efficiency of MBRs and, therefore, their capacity to ensure the required microbiological standards for the permeate achieved.  相似文献

Membrane fouling by soluble microbial products (SMP) remains one of the limitations for widespread applications of membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems. Over the past two decades, the characteristics and behaviors of SMP have attracted much attention, and efforts have been dedicated to clarify their role in membrane fouling in MBRs. However, to date, there are only few reviews directly relating this area, and the objective of previous reviews is to concentrate on SMP and their implications in biological treatment systems and their effluents. This brief review relating only to SMP-caused membrane fouling evaluation at the fractional level (SMP key components, sub-fractions and hydrophilic and hydrophobic fractions) and at the overall level (SMP overall roles, characteristics and factors) is presented, which could greatly help researchers and engineers to better understand SMP actual contribution to membrane fouling and adopt effective measures to avoid SMP-caused fouling in MBRs.  相似文献

To alleviate the fouling of a filter, simple substrates, dynamic filtration, and granular sludge were applied in an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). The results showed that under a transmembrane pressure < 20 kPa, the filter flux ranged between 15 and 20 l (m?2 h)?1 for a period of 30 days. The flux was higher than the typical flux of AnMBRs with conventional membranes and most current dynamic filters. In addition, the low cost of the filter avoided the need for a higher flux. Moreover, a stable granular sludge bed, which consumed all volatile fatty acids, was maintained. A compact fouling/filtration layer formed on the filter, which contributed to low effluent chemical oxygen demand concentrations and turbidity. In addition, substrate scarcity in the filtration zone resulted in the evolution of diverse bacteria on the filter.  相似文献

In this paper, the differences between reinforced sequencing batch reactor, which was inoculated with superior mixed flora, and conventional sequencing batch reactor were compared in the process of treating papermaking wastewater under similar conditions. The results showed that the addition of superior mixed flora could not only shorten the sludge acclimation time, but also improve the treatment efficiency of reactor as well as make the reactor have higher ability to withstand high volume loading rate; the phenomenon of aerobic granulation only occurred in reinforced sequencing batch reactor, and superior mixed flora were the key reason that aerobic granular sludge could shape; aerobic granular sludge had many advantages over conventional activated sludge such as it possessed compacter microbial structure, better settling performance, and lower water content.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of solids retention time (SRT) on membrane fouling and the characteristics of biomacromolecules. Four identical laboratory-scale membrane bioreactors (MBRs) were operated with SRTs for 10, 20, 40 and 80 days. The results indicated that membrane fouling occurred faster and more readily under short SRTs. Fouling resistance was the primary source of filtration resistance. The modified fouling index (MFI) results suggested that the more ready fouling at short SRTs could be attributed to higher concentrations of soluble microbial products (SMP). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated that the SRT had a weak influence on the functional groups of the total extracellular polymeric substances (TEPS) and SMP. However, the MBR under a short SRT had more low-molecular-weight (MW) compounds (<1 kDa) and fewer high-MW compounds (>100 kDa). Aromatic protein and tryptophan protein-like substances were the dominant groups in the TEPS and SMP, respectively.  相似文献

A submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) with a working volume of 1.4 L and a hollow fiber microfiltration membrane was used to treat a contaminated raw water supply at a short hydraulic retention time (HRT) of approximately 1 h. Filtration flux tests were conducted regularly on the membrane to determine various fouling resistances, and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to characterize the biofouling development and sludge cake formation on the membrane. The experimental results demonstrate that the MBR is highly effective in drinking water treatment for the removal of organic pollutants, ammonia, and UV absorbance. During the MBR operation, the fouling materials were not uniformly distributed on the entire surface of all of the membrane fibers. The membrane was covered partially by a static sludge cake that could not be removed by the shear force of aeration, and partially by a thin sludge film that was frequently washed away by aeration turbulence. The filtration resistance coefficients were 308.4 x 10(11) m(-1) on average for the sludge cake, 32.5 x 10(11) m(-1) on average for the dynamic sludge film, and increased from 10.5 x 10(11) to 59.7 x 10(11) m(-1) for the membrane pore fouling after 10 weeks of MBR operation at a filtration flux of 0.5 m3/m2 x d. Polysaccharides and other biopolymers were found to accumulate on the membrane, and hence decreased membrane permeability. More important, the adsorption of biopolymers on the membrane modified its surface property and led to easier biomass attachment and tighter sludge cake deposition, which resulted in a progressive sludge cake growth and serious membrane fouling. The sludge cake coverage on the membrane can be minimized by the separation, with adequate space, of the membrane filters, to which sufficient aeration turbulence can then be applied.  相似文献

Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a promising alternative to conventional wastewater treatment methods. However this process is still under-used due to its high running costs. Its main power requirement comes from aeration, which is used to supply dissolved oxygen to the micro-organisms and to maintain the solids in suspension. In addition, in submerged MBRs, aeration is used for membrane cleaning. A complex matrix links the biomass characteristics, the aeration and the oxygen transfer. These parameters can impact on each other and/or delete one another effect. In order to understand the phenomena occurring in MBRs, similar aerobic biological processes, such as fermentation, mineral industry and slurry, were investigated. This review discusses the interrelations of the biomass characteristics (solids concentration, particle size and viscosity), the aeration intensity and the oxygen transfer in MBRs.  相似文献

This paper is designed to provide an overview of the main membrane-assisted processes that can be used for the removal of toxic inorganic anions from drinking water supplies. The emphasis has been placed on integrated process solutions, including the emerging issue of membrane bioreactors. An attempt is made to compare critically recently reported results, reveal the best existing membrane technologies and identify the most promising integrated membrane bio/processes currently being under investigation. Selected examples are discussed in each case with respect to their advantages and limitations compared to conventional methods for removal of anionic pollutants. The use of membranes is particularly attractive for separating ions between two liquid phases (purified and concentrated water streams) because many of the difficulties associated with precipitation, coagulation or adsorption and phase separation can be avoided. Therefore, membrane technologies are already successfully used on large-scale for removal of inorganic anions such as nitrate, fluoride, arsenic species, etc. The concentrated brine discharge and/or treatment, however, can be problematic in many cases. Membrane bioreactors allow for complete depollution but water quality, insufficiently stable process operation, and economical reasons still limit their wider application in drinking water treatment. The development of more efficient membranes, the design of cost-effective operating conditions, especially long-term operations without or with minimal membrane inorganic and/or biological fouling, and reduction of the specific energy consumption requirements are the major challenges.  相似文献

This study aimed at unfolding the role and mechanisms of chemically enhanced cleaning-in-place (CIP) regimes in fouling control of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) made flat sheet (FS) membrane bio-reactors (MBRs). The trans-membrane pressure (TMP) was successfully maintained below 10 kPa using a daily CIP regime consisting of 100 to 600 mg l?1 of NaOCl and cake layer resistance control was shown to be critical for effective high-flux MBR operation. In contrast, in the control unit without the CIP, the TMP exceeded 35 kPa at a flux of 40 LMH. The extracellular polymeric substances associated with proteins (EPSprotein) were also controlled effectively with a daily application of the CIP to the fouled membrane. Moreover, the CIP prompted a thinner and looser bio-cake layer on the membrane surface, suggesting that in situ CIP can be a favorable method to control FS membrane fouling at high-flux MBR operation.  相似文献

Novel aerobic granular sludge membrane bioreactor (GMBR) was established by combining aerobic granular sludge technology with membrane bioreactor (MBR). GMBR showed good organics removal and simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) performances for synthesized wastewater. When influent total organic carbon (TOC) was 56.8-132.6 mg/L, the TOC removal of GMBR was 84.7-91.9%. When influent ammonia nitrogen was 28.1-38.4 mg/L, the ammonia nitrogen removal was 85.4-99.7%, and the total nitrogen removal was 41.7-78.4%. Moreover, batch experiments of sludge with different particle size demonstrated that: (1) flocculent sludge under aerobic condition almost have no denitrification capacity, (2) SND capacity was caused by the granular sludge, and (3) the denitrification rate and total nitrogen removal efficiency were enhanced with the increased particle size. In addition, study on the sludge morphology stability in GMBR showed that, although some granular sludge larger than 0.9 mm disaggregated at the beginning of operation, the granular sludge was able to maintain the stability of its granular morphology, and at the end of operation, the amount of granular sludge (larger than 0.18 mm) stabilized in GMBR was more than 56-62% of the total sludge concentration. The partial disaggregation of large granules is closely associated with the change of operating mode from sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system to MBR system.  相似文献

Biomass characteristics and membrane performances in the MBRs operated at a high flux of 30 L/m2 h under different SRTs (10, 30 days, and infinity) were monitored. Results showed that more serious cake-fouling happened in the SRT-infinity MBR, which correlated with the activated sludge characteristics such as smaller floc size and greater EPS amount. DGGE analysis indicated that the microbial community shifted in different ways under various SRTs, which also influenced EPS productions in the MBRs. Different microbial communities were developed on the membrane surfaces at various operating stages and SRTs. Possibly, the activated sludge characteristics (such as MLSS concentration, EPS properties) and hydrodynamic conditions influenced by the SRTs were associated with cake layer development and membrane fouling propensity. Insight into the EPS characteristics and deposition behaviors of bacterial flocs will be crucial to explore appropriate biofouling control strategies in MBRs.  相似文献

Aerobic granular sludge can be classified as a type of self-immobilized microbial consortium, consisting mainly of aerobic and facultative bacteria and is distinct from anaerobic granular methanogenic sludge. Aerobic granular technology has been proposed as a promising technology for wastewater treatment, but is not yet established as a large-scale application. Aerobic granules have been cultured mainly in sequenced batch reactors (SBR) under hydraulic selection pressure. The factors influencing aerobic granulation, granulation mechanisms, microbial communities and the potential applications for the treatment of various wastewaters have been studied comprehensively on the laboratory-scale. Aerobic granular sludge has shown a potential for nitrogen removal, but is less competitive for the high strength organic wastewater treatments. This technology has been developed from the laboratory-scale to pilot scale applications, but with limited and unpublished full-scale applications for municipal wastewater treatment. The future needs and limitations for aerobic granular technology are discussed.  相似文献

Sewage treatment by a low energy membrane bioreactor   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A new membrane bioreactor (MBR) was developed for treatment of municipal wastewater. The MBR was mainly made up of an activated sludge reactor and a transverse flow membrane module, with an innovative configuration being in application between them. As a result, the transverse flow membrane module and low recirculation flow rate created advantages, such as lower energy consumption and more resistance to membrane fouling. The total energy consumption in the whole system was tested as 1.97+/-0.74 kWh/m(3) (permeate) while using periodical backwash with treated water and backflush with mixed liquor daily, being in the same level as a submerged membrane bioreactor, reported to be 2.4 kWh/m(3) (permeate). Energy consumption analysis in the system shows that the membrane module was more energy consuming than the other four parts listed as pump, aeration, pipe system and return sludge velocity lose, which consumed 37.66-52.20% of the total energy. The effluent from this system could be considered as qualified for greywater reuse in China, showing its potential application in the future.  相似文献
