The authors investigated whether melatonin concentrations vary between the two jugular veins and whether absolute (nocturnal) or relative (nocturnal/diurnal ratio) plasma melatonin concentrations are associated with seasonal reproductive activity measured by oestrus or ovulatory activity in Payoya goats. Thirty-two adult Payoya goats were penned under natural photoperiod. Oestrus activity was tested daily using aproned males—twice a week plasma was sampled for progesterone. Melatonin plasma concentrations were studied at each equinox and solstice of the year in jugular samples taken simultaneously by venipuncture. Nocturnal and diurnal plasma melatonin concentrations from each jugular vein were assessed in 3 and 2 plasma samples per goat, respectively, taken at hourly intervals in each period. No differences in melatonin concentrations between the two veins were observed, but there was a significant interaction (P < 0.001) between jugular vein and animal in nocturnal melatonin concentrations. There was no effect of sampling period on melatonin concentrations and the coefficient of correlation between sampling periods was very high. The analyses performed indicated that neither absolute nor relative melatonin concentrations were related with the dates of onset or end of ovulatory/oestrus activity. Therefore, we concluded that in goats (1) melatonin concentrations are highly variable between jugular veins in the same individual but not in the general population, (2) melatonin concentrations are highly repeatable for each individual, and (3) absolute and relative amplitudes of melatonin concentrations are not linked to the seasonal breeding activity in Mediterranean goats.  相似文献

Effects of daily evening (just before the onset of darkness in a 24 h light dark cycle) administration of graded doses (25, 50, or 100 microg/100 g body wt./day for 30 days) of melatonin on the concentrations of blood glucose and adrenal catecholamines were studied in sexually active male roseringed parakeets under natural (NP; approximately 12L: 12D) and artificial long (LP; 16L: 8D) and short (SP; 8L: 16D) photoperiods. Blood samples and adrenal glands were collected from each bird during the mid-day on the following day of the last treatment. The concentrations of glucose in blood and epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE) in the adrenals were measured. The results of the study indicated that exogenous melatonin induces hypo- or hyperglycemia depending on the dose of hormone administered as well as to the length of photoperiod to which birds were exposed. The levels of E and NE in the adrenals were shown also to vary in relation to photoperiod and the dose of melatonin administered. But the nature of the influence of melatonin becomes different under altered photoperiodic conditions. It appears that short photoperiods are more effective than long photoperiods as a modulator of glycemic and adrenal catecholaminergic responses to exogenous melatonin. A statistically significant correlation between the levels of blood glucose and that of E and NE in the adrenals was found in the control birds, but not in the melatonin treated birds. The results suggested that the responses of blood glucose and adrenal catecholamines to the treatment with melatonin in the roseringed parakeets may not be dependent on each other.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Photoperiodic treatments have been of practical interest in controlling seasonal reproduction in sheep, goats and horses. Melatonin is the principal mediator of the environmental photoperiodic message. To investigate the intra- and inter-subject variability of melatonin 24 h rhythm, ten female Italian Saddle horses (8–10 yrs old, mean body weight 525 ± 30 kg), ten female Sarda breed sheep (2–3 yrs old, mean body weight 40.5 ± 2.8 kg) and ten female Sarda breed goats (3–4 yrs old, mean body weight 38.9 ± 4.1 kg), housed individually in a 4 × 4 m soundproof box equipped with 50 × 100 cm opening windows, were subjected to a natural photoperiod of the vernal equinox (sunrise 06:00 h; sunset 18:00 h). Blood samples were collected from each animal, every 3 h over a 48 h period starting at 00:00 h of day 1 and ending at 00:00 h of day 3. Plasma melatonin concentrations were determined by direct radioimmunoassay (MelatoninDirect RIA, Labor Diagnostika Nord GmbH, Nordhorn, Germany). The application of single cosinor method substantiated a circadian rhythm of melatonin with a nocturnal peak in all studied species. The application of two-way ANOVA on the rhythmic parameters indicated statistically significant differences between the three species in all of the cosinor analysis-derived parameters of MESOR, amplitude, acrophase and robustness of rhythm. Analyses of intra- and inter-subject variability indicate that organization of the melatonin 24 h rhythm is characterized by great accuracy of control within and between the individuals of a breed. In conclusion, features of the 24 h rhythm of melatonin among species; however, the 24 h rhythmicity of melatonin each species showed high stability within the various subjects and within the same subject. These findings must be taken into consideration when applying photoperiod and melatonin treatments for breeding purposes.  相似文献

Photoperiodic manipulation of young European starlings suggests that their reproductive physiology is incapable of responding to a short photoperiod until they are fully grown. This study aimed to determine whether the lack of response to a short photoperiod is reflected in the daily profile of plasma melatonin concentrations. Five-day-old starlings taken from nest boxes showed a significant (p < 0.0001) rhythm in plasma melatonin concentrations, with high values during night. In nestlings hand-reared from 5 days of age on a long photoperiod (LD 16:8), equivalent to natural photoperiod at the time, the amplitude of the daily rhythm in melatonin increased significantly (p < 0.01) with age until birds were fully grown (20 days old). In nestlings reared on a short photoperiod (LD 8:16), the daily melatonin profile remained almost identical to that of long photoperiod birds until they were fully grown. However, after 20 days old, the duration of elevated nighttime melatonin began to extend to encompass the entire period of darkness. In contrast, fully grown starlings transferred from a long to a short photoperiod had partially adapted to the short photoperiod after 5 days; by 10 days, the daily melatonin profile was identical to that of birds held chronically on a short photoperiod. Thus, consistent with responses of reproductive physiology, the pineal of young birds appears to be incapable of perceiving, or adapting to, a short photoperiod.  相似文献

To explore the heat and cold adaptation in Indian goats by the physiological, haematological, blood biochemical parameters and their seasonal variations, this study was conducted on heat- and cold-adapted Indian goats maintained in their natural habitat. Study was carried out in three different phases coincide with the three seasons (winter, spring and summer). The levels of physiological responses, that is rectal temperature, respiration rate and pulse rate, were observed to be significantly (p < 0.01) lower in heat-adapted breeds and higher in cold-adapted breeds, whereas the levels of Hb, PCV and TEC were significantly (p < 0.01) higher in cold-adapted goats. Significantly (p < 0.01) higher levels of plasma thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine) and plasma stress enzyme (AST and ALT) were also observed in cold-adapted goats. Significant (p < 0.01) seasonal variations in physiological responses, haematological and blood biochemical parameters in both heat- and cold-adapted breeds were reported in this study. Physiological responses, plasma enzymes and plasma cortisol levels significantly (p < 0.01) increased during summer in all the goat breeds. The levels of haematological parameters (Hb, PCV, TEC and TLC) and plasma thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine) decreased during summer. The changes in physiological parameters during summer due to heat stress were higher in cold-adapted goats whereas the levels of changes in these parameters during winter due to cold were higher in heat-adapted goats. High neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio during summer in cold-adapted breeds is an indicator of higher level of stress. Decrease in plasma electrolytes (Na and K) during summer also observed in cold-adapted breeds during summer. The variations in physiological, haematological, blood biochemical parameters in heat- and cold-adapted goats may be due to their adaptation to different environmental and geographical conditions essential for their survival.  相似文献

This study evaluates the pattern of plasma melatonin during the trough and the peak of its daily rhythm. Blood samples from 8 ewes were collected every 3 h for a 48-h period. On the third day, blood samples were collected from 10:00 to 13:00 (trough) and from 20:00 to 23:00 (peak) every 20 min. Our results showed a robust daily rhythm of melatonin in both days of monitoring, with nocturnal acrophase. During the trough, a significant decrease was observed starting from the 10:40 with a progressive decrease about every 40 min. During the peak of the plasma melatonin daily rhythm, an increase was observed starting from the 20:40 with a progressive increase about every 40 min. These data could be taken in consideration to monitor the plasma melatonin variations during the 24 h, and for the administration of melatonin for breeding in ewes.  相似文献

Early oestrous cycles were induced in adult, maiden, 18-month-old Suffolk-cross ewes, maintained from birth in natural photoperiod by the following treatments applied from mid-June: subcutaneous implantation of melatonin (1 g) in Silastic packets, daily, oral, melatonin administration (3 mg/ewe) at 15:30 h, an artificial photoperiod of 8L:16D (lights on 07:30 h). Ovarian cycles began 5-10 weeks before those of control ewes maintained in a natural photoperiod. In contrast, the onset of ovarian cycles in ewes given s.c. implants of melatonin (1 g) in April, and a further group in May, was highly variable, and not significantly different from that of the control ewes. Plasma melatonin profiles in sheep with implants showed a night-time rise super-imposed on a constant level, which was itself within the physiological night-time range. Implant-derived melatonin declined with time but remained at or above physiological night-time levels for at least 3 1/2 months. These results indicate that melatonin implants in June, but not in April or May, advance onset of oestrus in the non-lactating, adult ewe. The effects of melatonin implants in June on onset of ovarian cycles were indistinguishable from those of melatonin feeding or artificial short photoperiod initiated at this time of year.  相似文献

This work was designed to determine whether melatonin treatment at the spring equinox can induce reproductive activity in goats without separation from males (separation being the normal practice in Spanish farming systems) and whether this treatment modifies the onset of the natural breeding season. Twenty-nine entire does were distributed into two groups (Group M, n = 14; Group C, n = 15). A third group of ovariectomized, estradiol-treated goats (OVX group, n = 5) was used to study the effect of melatonin on reproductive activity. On March 18, Groups M and OVX received a subcutaneous melatonin implant. In entire females, estrus was tested daily using entire aproned males, and ovulation rate was assessed after identification of estrus. Plasma progesterone in entire goats, plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) in the OVX group, and live weight and body condition score for all animals were recorded once a week. In entire goats, a clear treatment by time interaction was observed for progesterone concentrations (P < 0.001), with a period of high progesterone concentrations during the natural seasonal anestrus in Group M. A similar period of high LH concentrations was observed in the OVX group. Whereas all females of Group M presented ovarian activity during this period, no female of Group C did. The resumption of the natural breeding season was retarded in Group M in comparison with that in Group C (P < 0.05). We can conclude that in Mediterranean goats, melatonin implants can induce reproductive activity without separation from males, and it causes a small retardation in the reactivation of reproductive activity in the natural breeding season.  相似文献

Exposure of rams to alternating 16-week cycles of long and short days (16L:8D and 8L:16D) results in periods of testicular regression followed by testicular redevelopment, and there is an inverse relationship between the blood levels of prolactin and testis activity. In this study, two groups of rams were held under long or short day lengths for a period of 94 weeks. When held under either long or short days for more than 16 weeks, the animals showed spontaneous changes in gonadal activity and in the secretion of prolactin, both of which were no longer correlated with the prevailing photoperiod, i.e., they became photorefractory. The photorefractoriness was characterized by cyclical changes in testis function which were independent of day length. The period of these spontaneous cycles was similar during both treatment regimens (long days: 40.9 +/- 1.5 weeks; short days: 38.1 +/- 0.33 weeks), suggesting the presence of an endogenous pacemaker for the reproductive system. The changes in blood prolactin levels during photorefractoriness were no longer correlated with testis activity, and though cyclical, the period lengths differed under the two regimens (long days: 31.8 +/- 1.4 weeks; short days: 48.6 +/- 0.3 weeks). The rates of change in testis function and prolactin secretion were slower during the refractory state than during the photosensitive state. Upon switching the rams to a different photoperiod after the 94 weeks of exposure to fixed day lengths, the rams showed relatively rapid testicular and prolactin responses. Photoperiodic information appears to be relayed to the endocrine system through the daily pattern of melatonin secretion by the pineal. We measured the daily blood levels of melatonin on several occasions during phases of photosensitivity and photorefractoriness in the same group of rams. During the first 21 weeks under both lighting treatments, the rams showed synchronized daily patterns in their blood levels of melatonin, with elevated levels occurring mainly during the daily period of darkness. Similar synchronized daily rhythms were also seen when the rams were switched to a different photoperiod following 94 weeks of exposure to either long or short days. Between Weeks 21 and 94, the daily rhythms of melatonin did not occur consistently in all rams; often, the patterns differed markedly between individual rams held under the same day length and peak levels of melatonin were not always confined to periods of darkness.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Sexual activity in sheep is under photoperiodic control, which is the main environmental factor responsible for the seasonality of reproduction. However, other natural environmental factors such as presence of conspecifics can slightly influence the timing of onset and offset of the breeding season. In goats, we have found that the continuous presence of bucks that were rendered sexually active out of season by previous exposure to long days, prevented goats from displaying seasonal anestrus, which suggests that the relative contribution of photoperiod in controlling seasonal anestrus should be reevaluated in small ruminant species. The aim of this study was to assess whether the presence of sexually active rams that had been stimulated by artificial photoperiod and melatonin implants, reduces seasonal anestrus in sheep, by prolonging ovulatory activity in spring. Ewes were assigned to one of two groups (n = 16 and 15), which were housed in two separate barns, and kept in contact, either with the treated or the control rams between March and July. Vasectomized rams were either exposed to 2 months of long days followed by the insertion of three subcutaneous melatonin implants (treated rams, n = 8), or exposed to natural light conditions (control rams, n = 2). Estrus was monitored daily, and weekly plasma progesterone analyses indicated ovulatory activity. Ewes that were exposed to treated rams exhibited a higher proportion of monthly estrus than ewes exposed to the control rams (P < 0.05). Thirteen of 15 ewes (one ewe was not considered because of the presence of persistent CL) exposed to stimulated rams exhibited estrous behavior in a cyclic manner. In contrast, all ewes exposed to control rams stopped estrous activity for a period of time during the study, such that this group exhibited a significantly longer anestrous season (mean ± standard error of the mean 89 ± 9 days) than did the ewes housed with treated rams (26 ± 10 days; P < 0.0001). Among 15 ewes housed with treated rams, 13 of them exhibited continuous ovulatory activity between March and July, whereas one stopped in June and two in July. All ewes kept with control rams stopped ovulating for some time; consequently, those ewes had a longer anovulation period than did the group exposed to treated rams (3 ± 3 vs. 18 ± 7 days, respectively; P < 0.05). In conclusion, continuous exposure to sexually activated rams induced by artificial photoperiod and melatonin implants in spring extended the ovarian activity of ewes in spring, which results in an increase in estrous expression.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to describe the progesterone profile, physiological response, milk composition, and blood chemistry at the early stage (DIM 30-90 days) of lactation (E1:30-50; E2:50-70; E3:70-90 days) in Baladi goats under Egyptian conditions. The serum progesterone level was significantly reduced with the progress of the early lactation period to reach the least concentration (0.24 ng/ml) at the E3 stage of lactation (P=0.001). The daily milk yield was significantly increased with the progress of the lactation to reach the peak at the E2 stage of lactation (P=0.015). The percentage of milk fat was significantly decreased with the progress of the early lactation period (P=0.032). However, the percentages of total solids and SNF were significantly increased in E2 and E3 stages when compared with the E1 stage (P=0.001 and 0.018, respectively). The serum glucose and total antioxidant capacity were considerably reduced with the progress of the lactation period (P=0.047 and 0.039, respectively). In conclusion, Baladi goats showed a decreased serum progesterone level with the progress of the early lactation period and produce milk with a relatively stable protein and lactose contents. Furthermore, Baladi does able to maintain the stability of most blood biochemical parameters during such period.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the concentration of abscisic acid (ABA) in current-year needles of two different genotypes (AB-NSD-004 and AB-NSD-184) were monitored in branches collected from 20-year-old balsam fir (Abies balsamea L. (Mill.)) trees over a period of 11 months. A significant genotype × harvesting time interaction was observed for endogenous ABA levels and postharvest needle retention duration (NRD). A consistent pattern of seasonal variation in ABA concentration was observed in both genotypes, with the highest amount of ABA (7,887 ng g?1 DW) accumulating in April and May. The highest levels of ABA coincided with the lowest postharvest NRD regardless of genotype. Nevertheless, genotypes differed in their ABA concentrations. Branches of genotype AB-NSD-184 sampled during August exhibited 170 days of NRD whereas those collected in May and June registered the lowest NRD of around 40 days. There was a significant negative correlation (P < 0.05) between endogenous ABA concentrations and postharvest NRD in genotype AB-NSD-184. Also, an inverse relationship was observed between the average daily photoperiod and the postharvest NRD (R 2 = 0.35; P = 0.000) in the same genotype. Together with average daily temperature, the R 2 value for this correlation reached the highest (0.75; P ≤ 0.00). Genotypes differed in their physiological responses to environmental cues and thus differed in their postharvest qualities. Average daily photoperiod and maximum daily temperature are strongly linked to the postharvest NRD through modulating endogenous ABA concentration.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Ecological artificial light at night (ALAN) has been increasingly associated with negative effects on the behavior and ecology of wild birds. However, the impacts of short-term bright ALAN on the temporal biology of companion animals and the underlying mediating mechanism are unknown. We evaluated impacts of 1X60-min/middle night ALAN (200 lux, λDominant = 460 nm) nightly with or without melatonin administration on growth performance, reproductive capacity, food and water intake, and stress responses in Australian budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) under captivity. 36 birds were housed in pairs under natural photoperiod and were equally divided into three groups: control, natural conditions; ALAN, control + ALAN; and melatonin, ALAN + melatonin in the drinking water during the dark period. Birds were regularly monitored for body mass, egg production, and hatchability over four months. Food intake, water consumption, and daily rhythm of fecal corticosterone were also evaluated. ALAN increased mass gain, food intake, water consumption, and drastically decreased reproductive capacity, whereas stress responses were markedly augmented. Melatonin restored food and water intake to control levels but partly reversed mass gain. Melatonin failed to ameliorate the impaired reproductive capacity despite reducing the stress responses to basal levels. These results suggest that the ALAN-induced negative impacts cannot be attributed solely to direct effects of melatonin suppression or/and exacerbated stress responses and the involvement of other photoperiodic pathway components warrant further studies. Finally, the results of our study may be of importance for improving the housing conditions of companion animals at least as concern bright ALAN exposures.  相似文献

Melatonin treatment in adult cashmere goats can increase cashmere yield and improve cashmere fibre quality by inducing cashmere growth during cashmere non-growth period, of which time cashmere goats are in the mid and late stages of lactation. However, whether melatonin treatment in adult cashmere goats affects their offspring’s growth performance remains unknown. Therefore, the objectives of the current study were to determine the effects of melatonin treatment in adult cashmere goats on cashmere and milk production performance in dams and on hair follicle development and subsequent cashmere production in their offspring. Twenty-four lactating Inner Mongolian Cashmere goat dams (50 ± 2 days in milk, mean ± SD) and their single-born female offspring (50 ± 2 days old, mean ± SD) were randomly assigned to one of two groups supplemented with melatonin implants (MEL; n = 12) or without (CON; n = 12). The melatonin implants were subcutaneously implanted behind the ear at a dose of 2 mg/kg live weight on two occasions – 30 April and 30 June 2016. The results demonstrated that melatonin treatment in adult cashmere goats increased cashmere production and improved cashmere fibre quality as indicated by greater cashmere yield, longer cashmere fibre staple length, finer cashmere fibre diameter and thicker cashmere fibre density. The milk fat content was higher in MEL compared with CON cashmere goats. The daily yields of milk production, milk protein and milk lactose were lower in MEL compared with CON cashmere goats. Serum melatonin concentrations were greater, serum prolactin concentrations were lower and milk melatonin concentrations and yields were greater in MEL compared with CON cashmere goats. With regard to offspring, there were no differences in cashmere yield, fibre staple length, fibre diameter and fibre density at yearling combing, and the primary and secondary hair follicles population and maturation between treatments. In conclusion, melatonin treatment in adult cashmere goats during cashmere non-growth period is a practical and an effective way in cashmere industry as indicated by not only increasing cashmere yield and improving cashmere fibre quality in adult cashmere goat dams but also having no impairment in hair follicle development and the subsequent cashmere production in their single-born offspring.  相似文献

Plasma melatonin was measured at the summer and winter solstices and the autumn and spring equinoxes in Romney Marsh sheep held under natural conditions in South Australia (35 degrees S). The amount of melatonin detected was generally related to the extent of natural darkness, though the melatonin onset was particularly delayed after dusk in winter compared with other seasons. The duration of detectable melatonin was shorter in summer than at any other season. After each initial 24 h sampling, the sheep were resampled for a further 24 h in acutely extended darkness to mark the phase and duration of suprachiasmatic nuclei activity which is believed to be the source of the melatonin signal. The onset of high plasma melatonin was earlier than the time of natural sunset in spring and summer, but not different from the time of natural sunset in autumn and winter. The offset of high plasma melatonin was later than the time of natural sunrise at all times of year and particularly so in summer. Under the extended dark conditions, the duration of detectable melatonin was longer than that under natural photoperiod at all seasons of the year and the duration of melatonin was again shorter in summer than winter. If melatonin measurements under the conditions of extended darkness do reflect the phase and duration of suprachiasmatic nuclei function then the natural light of the photoperiod can, particularly during long photoperiod conditions, mask the expression of the pacemaker. The findings may have implications for the timing of the breeding season in Romney Marsh sheep.  相似文献

One experiment was conducted to determine whether the treatment with artificial long days and exogenous melatonin can induce reproductive activity during spring (seasonal anoestrus) in Mediterranean goats that are in daily contact with bucks and whether this treatment causes a variation in the reactivation of the reproductive activity in the normal breeding season. The experiment started on 4 November 2005 and finished on 27 October 2006. Thirty-four adult and barren does were used, distributed into two groups balanced according to their live weight (LW) and body condition score (BCS). Seventeen females were exposed to long days (16 h of light/day) from 14 November 2005 to 20 February 2006. On 20 February, they received one s.c. melatonin implant (LD-M group) and were exposed to natural photoperiodic changes in an open shed. The other females during the experiment were placed in an open shed under natural photoperiod and remained as the control group (C group). The C and LD-M groups were keeping in contact with males during the whole experiment. During the experiment, the LW, BCS and plasma progesterone concentrations were measured weekly, oestrous activity was tested daily using entire aproned bucks, and ovulation rate was evaluated by laparoscopy 7 days after positive identification of the oestrus. A clear treatment-time interaction was observed for plasma progesterone concentrations (P < 0.001), with a period of high progesterone concentrations during the natural seasonal anoestrus in the LD-M group. Although 94.1% of females in the LD-M group presented ovarian activity during this period, no female in group C did. Resumption of ovarian activity in the subsequent natural breeding season was 2 weeks later in the LD-M group in comparison with group C (P < 0.05). We can conclude that in Mediterranean goat breeding systems, when females are in daily contact with bucks, the treatment with 3 months of long days and melatonin implant at the end of the light photoperiodic treatment can induce ovarian and oestrous activity during the seasonal anoestrus. Finally, this treatment causes a short delay in the subsequent reactivation of ovarian activity in the natural breeding season.  相似文献

Goat kids born in spring attain sexual maturity during the first autumn after birth in temperate regions, at about 30 weeks of age. This study observed sexual development in autumn-born kids and the influence of late-summer, prenatal light treatment on onset of puberty. The breeding season of 14 female British Saanen dairy goats was artificially advanced by 4 months, using a treatment of long days during the winter followed by melatonin treatment in spring. Five goats were treated with a photoperiod of 20 h light:4 h dark (lights on 04.00 h) for 62.1 +/- 1.4 days (mean +/- SEM, n = 5) prepartum (14 August to 15 October). The remaining nine goats were kept under a natural photoperiod: 20 kids from these mothers were followed, five males and five females from each group. Testicular development was assessed by means of weekly measurement of scrotal circumference. Blood samples were taken once a week from all kids from 4 weeks of age for 5 months. Plasma was assayed for progesterone in females and testosterone in males. Autumn-born female kids initiated oestrous cyclicity in January, at a mean age of 12.8 +/- 0.8 weeks. Puberty onset was significantly delayed (P less than 0.03, unpaired Student's t test) in females exposed to 20 h light:4 h dark in utero and occurred at a mean age of 16.5 +/- 1.4 weeks. Testicular development was significantly delayed and plasma testosterone concentrations were lower in autumn-born male kids that experienced 20 h light:4 h dark in utero than in kids from mothers in a natural photoperiod.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Understanding the seasonal patterns of estrus cycle in caprine is crucial to develop the efficient breeding plans in the subtropics. Thus, the aim of the current research was to evaluate the effects of breeding season on hormonal profile and blood biochemical indices at different stages of estrus cycle in normal breeding or out-of-season breeding in goats. Forty-four Baladi goats were monitored for a period of eight months (July–February). Baladi goats exhibit a normal seasonal breeding (NS) at midsummer and continue through the autumn season (68%), with a considerable percentage of females having estrus signs during out-of-season (OS) period (32%). At the mid and late luteal phases of estrus cycles, the NS breeding group had significantly higher serum progesterone level than that reported in the OS group (p = 0.013 and 0.039, respectively). At the estrus and late luteal phases of estrus cycles, the NS breeding group had significantly higher serum β-estradiol level than that reported in the OS group (p = 0.022 and 0.001, respectively). Compared to the OS group, the NS breeding group had significantly higher serum cholesterol at the mid and late luteal phases of estrus cycle (p = 0.001 and 0.016, respectively), and higher serum glucose level in the early luteal phase of the cycle (p = 0.009). In conclusion, the NS breeding goats had superior progesterone (mid-luteal and late luteal phases) and estradiol (estrus and late luteal phases) profiles than that reported in the OS group. This may indicate specific approaches to maintain the breeding efficiency of goats during the out-of-season period.  相似文献

Plasma melatonin rhythms in euthermic marmots (Marmota flaviventris)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Plasma melatonin concentrations were measured in marmots (Marmota flaviventris) maintained under three short-day (4L:20D; 8L:10D; 10L:14D) and one long-day (14L:10D) photoperiod(s). Each animal had a daily rhythm of plasma melatonin with elevated plasma melatonin levels occurring during the dark period of the lighting cycle. There were no significant differences between any peak values during the night. The mean duration of elevated night melatonin concentrations was significantly different between long-day (16L:8D) and 8L:16D or 4L:20D animals (P less than 0.01). Daytime plasma melatonin levels were not significantly different among the photoperiods. These results characterize plasma melatonin rhythms in a sciurid rodent and demonstrate that this rhythm is modified by photoperiod. Therefore, the plasma melatonin profile could convey information about day length to the animal or, alternatively, the rhythm may be acting as a time-keeping mechanism for other physiological functions.  相似文献

Daily variation in melatonin receptor (MT1 and MT2) density in three specific tissues-brain, retina, and ovary-and its temporal relationship with serum melatonin were evaluated for the first time in a freshwater teleost, the carp Catla catla, under natural as well as altered photoperiods in different reproductive phases of the annual cycle. Cosinor analysis was used to determine rhythmic features of the serum melatonin and receptors (MT1 and MT2) in different tissues. In each photoperiodic group, irrespective of season, the daily minimum serum melatonin level was noted at midday. However, the daily peak value of melatonin varied in relation to both photo-schedules and reproductive phases. Under natural photoperiods (NPs; duration varied with seasons) and short photoperiods (SPs; light [L]:dark [D] 8:16), it occurred in the late dark phase during the preparatory phase, and at midnight in the remaining parts of the annual cycle. On the other hand, in each reproductive phase, compared to corresponding NP carp, the daily melatonin peak under long photoperiods (LPs; L:D 16:8) exhibited a phase delay of ~2-3?h (occurring during the late dark phase). The melatonin levels at each sampling point were highest during the postspawning phase and lowest during the spawning phase, irrespective of the photoperiodic history of the fish. In each tissue, Western blot analysis revealed a band at ~37?kDa and a band at ~36?kDa corresponding to the molecular weights of native MT1 and MT2 receptor proteins, respectively, with the band intensity of MT1 always being higher than that of a 36-kDa protein. The content of both melatonin receptor proteins varied significantly according to the studied tissue (being highest in the retina, intermediate in the brain, and lowest in the ovary), time in the daily cycle (peak at midnight and fall at midday), and reproductive phase in the annual cycle (highest in the spawning phase and lowest in the postspawning phase). Remarkably, no significant effects of altered photoperiod were detected on any rhythm parameters of either MT1 or MT2 in any of the studied tissues. Collectively, the results of the present study suggest a role of photoperiod in determining daily and seasonal profiles of serum melatonin, but not its receptor proteins, on the ovary or on any nongonad tissues in carp.  相似文献
