Summary Flowers of Aesculus hippocastanum L. are bisexual and zygomorphic, and are positioned on a 20–30 cm long inflorescence. Those located in the basal part of the panicle are female and fertile (segment A), flowers in the middle are bisexual (segment B), and those on top of the panicle are male (segment C). Androgenesis was achieved in anther culture which originated from three types of flowers cultured on modified Murashige and Skoog medium containing 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (4.5 μM) and kinetin (4.6 μM). Differences in viability of uninuclear microspores were found between female (90.0%) and other flowers (bisexual 61.1%; male 72.7%.). Both the percentage of embryogenic anthers and the number of androgenic embryos formed per inflorescence differed according to the segment of origin. The highest embryogenic response was obtained in segment A (47.3%) and the lowest in segment C (24.1%). A significant difference was found between the number of androgenic embryos formed per inflorescence in segments A (921.0) and C (286.7). The highest germination percentage (21.3%) and plantelet formation (41.0%) were obtained on woody plant WPM liquid medium supplemented with 1% activated charcoal. Acclimation and regeneration were best from plantelets originating from female flowers (62.5%). Plantlets originating from bisexual and male flowers have much poorer survival (29.3 and 22.2%, respectively).  相似文献

Anthesis in individual flowers of Nuphar pumila (Timm) DC. occurs for four consecutive days. First-day flowers are protogynous and functionally female. Flowers can open completely on the first day of anthesis. This contrasts with all previous reports, which state that first-day flowers of Nuphar are characterized by partial expansion of the calyx, leaving a distal small triangular opening just above the stigmatic disc. Flowers close completely on the first night of anthesis and remain partially open on the subsequent three nights. During the entire anthesis period the stigmas emit a sweet, fruity odor and the petal nectaries produce visible nectar drops. The stigma of N. pumila is secretory and unicellular-papillate. Pollen grains are monosulcate with long spines. Our observations on the mating system of N. pumila indicate that neither asexual seed production nor spontaneous self-pollination occurs. Cross-pollination of second-, third- and fourth-day flowers produced few seeds. Flowers of N. pumila were mainly pollinated by sweat bees, with flies playing a minor pollination role. No beetle visits were observed. Our insect-pollination observations substantiate the view that the relative contribution of flies, bees, and beetles to pollination in a single Nuphar population depends on two factors: the relative abundance of the insects, and presence of alternative food sources.  相似文献

Summary Flower and fruit characters were measured in ten female, five male and five fruiting male selections of A. deliciosa var deliciosa (A. Chev) Liang and Ferguson. Flowers from female vines had functional pistils, which contained many ovules. Stamens appeared to be fully developed but produced only empty pollen grains. Flowers from male vines had functional stamens that produced high percentages of pollen grains with stainable cytoplasmic contents. Pistils did not contain ovules and were generally small with vestigial styles. Fruiting male vines had both staminate and bisexual flowers. Staminate flowers were similar to those found on strictly male vines. Bisexual flowers produced ovules and stainable pollen. Pistils were smaller than in pistillate flowers. Although the three flower sexes differed in style length, ovary dimensions and ovules per carpel, staminate and bisexual flowers were similar in number of flowers per inflorescence, stamen filament length, pollen stainability, inflorescence rachis length and carpel number, and differed from pistillate flowers in these characters. The three flower sexes had similar sepal and petal numbers. The fruit of fruiting males were considerably smaller than those of females. Low ovule number appears to be the major factor limiting fruit size in the fruiting males studied. Prospects for developing hermaphroditic kiwifruit cultivars through breeding are discussed.  相似文献

Flowering and pollination biology of the monoecious palmEuterpe precatoria was studied in the forest of the Reserva Ducke near Manaus, Brazil, during two annual flowering periods (middle of October to end of March) between 1991 and 1993. Individuals produced one to four bisexual inflorescences per flowering period. Inflorescences have staminate and pistillate flowers in triads. The anthesis of the whole inflorescence averaged 26 days, with the male phase extending over the first 17 days, followed by six days without any open flowers, and the female phase covering the last three days. The distinct dichogamy of the inflorescence results in obligate outcrossing. The pollen-ovule ratio is high (42000). Both male and female flowers emit an almond oil-like scent and produce nectar in septal nectaries. The concentration and total amount of sugar of the nectar of female flowers (37% and 0.021 mg) were significantly higher than that of male flowers (9% and 0.007 mg). The nectar is hexose-rich and with a moderately high amino acid concentration (68 µg/ml).Euterpe precatoria seems to be a generally entomophilous palm with a predominance of beetles and bees as potential pollinators. The most constant visitors were beetles of the familiesCurculionidae, Chrysomelidae, Staphylinidae, and bees of the familyHalictidae. The actual composition of the insect spectrum depends on climatic and biotic factors. Additionally, wind pollination may occur. Fruit development lasted four months and ripe fruits are swallowed by toucans who thus disperse the seeds.This study is part of an unpublished doctoral thesis of the first author. Relationships between microgametophyte numbers per flower and fruit-set were sought inPhlox drummondii Hook. This was accomplished by counting fluorescentstained pollen tubes in flowers with and without fruits in 21 populations, and in flowers subject to either supplemental or sparse pollination, and then determining whether the flowers initiate fruits. There was a conspicuous variation in mean pollen tubes per flower (3–38) and in percent fruit-set (17%–92%) among populations. Neighboring populations often differed strikingly in these respects. Flowers with fruits had an average of 15.2 pollen tubes per stigma whereas those without had an average of 3 7 tubes. Over all flowers, there was a mean of 3.7 tubes per ovule. There was a strong correlation between mean tube number within populations and their percent fruit-set (r = 0.86). Supplemental pollination significantly enhanced fruit-set, thereby supporting the notion that fruit-set was pollen-limited in most populations. In both natural and artificial pollinations a portion of flowers without fruits still had several pollen tubes. The occurrence of fruitless flowers containing tubes is explained by attrition factors, like late-acting pollen-pistil incompatibility, and resource limitation. Fruit-set could be initiated with one pollen tube, but this rarely occurred in nature. Higher pollen loads were accompanied by higher percents of fruit-set and number of seeds per flower.  相似文献

The flowering biology and pollination ecology ofLoranthus acaciae was studied at Hazeva in the northern Arava Valley in Israel. Flowers at anthesis had red anthers, a red stigma and a green corolla which turned red as a postfloral phenomenon. Their flowering period was approximately 10 months long (from mid-June until mid-April) during which time two main flowering patterns were distinguished. Some plants flowered twice a year, with separate summer and winter flowering periods; other plants flowered continuously, with two peaks, one in the summer and one in the winter. Several significant differences between summer and winter flowering and fruiting were found: (1) the summer flowering period was shorter than that of winter, (2) flowering synchrony between individual plants was lower in summer than in winter, (3) in summer the plants produced a larger proportion of female flowers, whereas in winter most of the plants produced a larger proportion of hermaphrodites, (4) in summer a limited number of plants produced smaller flowers while the majority produced normal-sized flowers, whereas in winter the entire population produced only normal-sized flowers, and (5) fruit set percentage was lower in summer than in winter.L. acaciae was found to be self-compatible, but, since it was not spontaneously self-pollinated, it showed high dependence on pollinator activity. In summer the flowers were visited by a wide spectrum of pollinators, both birds and insects, while in winter flowers were visited almost exclusively by the orange-tufted sunbird (Nectarinia osea osea, Nectariniidae). These seasonal changes in flowering characteristics and pollinator activity could explain why reproductive success is higher in winter than in summer.  相似文献

The flowers ofOpuntia basilaris andO. littoralis in southern California are visited commonly by beetles(Carpophilus, Trichochrous) and bees (especially anthophorids, megachilids, and halictids), but are pollinated mainly by the bees. This agrees with observations presented in the previous papers in this series for other cactus species in Arizona and Texas. The available evidence indicates that the large, diurnal, cup-shaped flowers in cacti of the American Southwest are primarily bee-pollinated. Our earlier view that theseOpuntia flowers are also pollinated to a significant extent bynitidulid andmelyrid beetles must be modified now in the light of further evidence. Cnidoscolus urens is a monoecious, selfcompatible herb. Male and female flowers differ structurally, but appear superficially similar and the principal dry season pollinator, a butterfly (Eurema daira) did not discriminate between them. Female flowers offered little or no nectar reward and may mimic males in order to receive pollen. Male flowers last only 1 day; female flowers usually last 1 day but may remain receptive for 7 days if unpollinated. Flowers opened between 00.00 hours and 01.00 hours, opening earlier as the wet season approached. This shift is probably correlated with a change to nocturnal moth pollination in the wet season.
Within an inflorescence there are c. 16 times more male than female flowers. Female flowers occur in the lowermost positions and open first. Female flowering is followed by a brief period when no flowers open and then by an extended period of male flowering.
Although there is no overlap between male and female phases within an inflorescence, nonsynchronous development of several inflorescences on one individual means that selfing is possible for nearly all female flowers. However, observations of pollinator behaviour indicate that butterflies frequently move to another plant after visiting one inflorescence. Gibberellic acid (GA,), chlorflurenol and ethrel were applied at different concentrations to either male or female trees of Myrica esculenta. GA3 induced intersexual flowers both on the male and female trees whereas chlorflurenol and ethrel induced similar (intersexual) flowers but only on the male plants. When GA3 was applied in combination with chlorflurenol, fewer intersexual inflorescences appeared on the male plants along with a significant decline in the number of flowers per inflorescence. In combination, chlorflurenol and ethrel induced copious female and intersexual inflorescences per male plant, especially when two successive treatments of 100 mg/I of chlorflurenol and 1920 mg/l of ethrel were applied. Summary Flowering patterns of four Heliconia (Heliconiaceae) species in Trinidad, West Indies were examined for their predictability and availability to the nectarivores that rely on Heliconia floral nectar. Principal flower visitors are trapling hermit hummingbirds; inflorescences are inhabited by nectarivorous hummingbird flower mites that move between inflorescences by riding in the hummingbirds' nares. Heliconia inflorescences flower for 40–200 days, providing long-term sources of copious nectar (30–60 l per flower), but each Heliconia flower lasts only a single day. As an inflorescence ages the interval increases between open flowers within a bract; wet-season inflorescences produce open flowers more slowly than dry-season conspecifics.Estimated daily energy expenditures for hermit hummingbirds demonstrate that slow production of short-lived open flowers plus low inflorescence density preclude territorial defense of Heliconia by the hermits. Heliconia flowering patterns are viewed as a means of (i) regulating reproductive investment by the plants through staggered flower production over long periods of time, and (ii) maintaining outcrossing by necessitating a traplining visitation pattern by its hummingbird pollinators. I suggest that Heliconia exhibit a two-tiered pollination system by using hermit hummingbirds primarily for outcrossing and using hummingbird flower mites primarily for self-pollination.  相似文献

Silene acaulis (Caryophyllaceae) is an alpine-arctic plant with a gynodioecious breeding system, but significant variation in sex expression has been reported. In addition, population sex ratio may be modified by the anther-smutMicrobotryum violaceum (Pers.)Deml & Oberwinkler, which sterilizes individuals of both sexes. A survey was undertaken at several sites on Baffin Island, Canada, to determine sex ratio and assess variation in female function among morphologically hermaphroditic individuals. The degree of anthersmut infection was also measured. Six sites had high female frequencies ranging from 72–80% and < 2% smut infection. High female frequencies may indicate cytoplasmic control of male-sterility. A seventh site from a mesic habitat had only 50% females and a higher rate of smut infection (22%). Of the three sites studied in detail, 84% of females set at least one capsule compared to only 25% of the hermaphrodites, indicating reduced female function. Hermaphrodites displayed significant variability in female function. Flowers with short styles (< 4.0mm) had degenerated ovules, and field estimates confirmed that only 5% of these individuals set capsules, but comprised the majority (> 55%) of hermaphrodites. Although hermaphrodites with short-styled flowers functioned solely as males, there was no increase in pollen production compared to long-styled hermaphrodites. Long-styled hermaphrodites produced the same number of ovules as females, and all set at least one capsule but these plants were uncommon (< 11%) at all sites.  相似文献

The annual Mediterranean herbTheligonum cynocrambe shows a peculiar combination of morphological characters, e.g., switch from decussate to spiral phyllotaxis with 90–100° divergence, combined with a change from interpetiolar to lateral stipules, anemophily, lack of calyx, flowers often dimerous to trimerous, corolla fused in both male and female flowers, male flowers extra-axillary, with 2–19 stamens per flower, female flowers axillary, with inferior uniovulate ovary, basilateral style and perianth, nut-like fruits with elaiosome. In male flowers the androecium emerges as an (uneven) elliptical rim with a central depression. This common girdling primordium is divided up into several stamen primordia. In male flowers with low stamen number the stamen primordia may occupy the corners alternating with the corolla lobes. There are no epipetalous androecial primordia that secondarily divide into stamens. Male flowers occasionally show a hemispherical base that may be interpreted as remnant of the inferior ovary. In female flowers a ring primordium grows into a tube on which the petal lobes arise. The perianth and style become displaced adaxially by uneven growth of the inferior ovary. The ovary is basically bilocular. The lower region of the ovary is provided with a septum that is overtopped and hidden by the single curved ovule.Theligonum is referred to theRubiaceae-Rubioideae, with theAnthospermeae andPaederieae as most closely related tribes.  相似文献

Summary In rain forest study plots, the sexes of Compsoneura sprucei (Myristicaceae) were radomly distributed and similar in vegetative dimensions. The sex ratio among adults was estimated as 1.25 male: female. The population showed two flowering episodes per year, of unequal intensity. Sexual dimorphisms in order of increasing difference included the frequency of flowering, the number of flowers per inflorescence and the number of inflorescences per tree. Most females matured only 0–10 seeds per tree per flowering episode. Tree size was a better indicator of fecundity in males than females. Reproduction in both sexes was dominated by a very few prolific trees.  相似文献

Individual flowers ofMoraea inclinata are nectariferous and last about six hours. They appear to be pollinated largely by bees in the familyHalictidae (Lasioglossum spp.,Nomia spp.,Zonalictus) and to a lesser extent by bees in the familyAnthophoridae (Amegilla). The mechanism of bee-pollination inM. inclinata is the Iris type; i.e., each flower consists of three pollination units (an outer tepal, a partly exserted anther, and the opposed style branch which terminates in a pair of petal-like crests). Bees rarely visit more than one pollination unit per flower. Transferral of pollen to the bee is passive and nototribic although all bees collected on the flowers were female and 55% of the bees carried pollen loads with 2–5 pollen taxa in their scopae.Moraea brevistyla flowers are nectariferous but lack scent and last two days. They are visited infrequently by bees and only one femaleLasioglossum spec. carried the pollen ofM. brevistyla. Unlike flowers ofM. inclinata those ofM. brevistyla deposit pollen only on the head and thorax. Bee-mediated autogamy in both species is avoided due to the erratic foraging patterns of the bees and the flexibility of each stigma lobe as the bee backs out of the flower. Approximately 2–4 flowers in the inflorescences of both species (6–8 flowers/infloresence) develop into capsules.  相似文献

Darwin pointed out that plants with vertical inflorescences are likely to be outcrossed if the inflorescence is acropetalous (flowers from the bottom up), the flowers are protandrous (pollen is dispersed before stigmas are receptive), and pollinators move upward on the inflorescence. This syndrome is common in species pollinated by bees and flies, and very few exceptions are known. We investigated flowering phenology and pollinator behavior in Besseya bullii (Scrophulariaceae) and found that it did not fit Darwin's syndrome. The vertical inflorescence was acropetalous but the flowers were distinctly protogynous, so flowers with newly receptive stigmas appeared on the inflorescence above those with dehiscing anthers. A number of small insects visited B. bullii; bees in the family Halictidae (Augochlorella striata and Dialictus spp.) were most common. When insects moved between gender phases within inflorescences, they moved up more often than down (61% versus 39% of observations, respectively) but this difference was only marginally significant. Most visits were to male-phase flowers only, and this preference was more pronounced for pollen-foraging insects than for nectar-foraging insects. B. bullii was self-compatible, so its flowering characteristics potentially could result in considerable self-pollination. However, an average of 38% of the lowermost flowers opened before any pollen was available on the same inflorescence; these solo females had a high probability of outcrossing (though fruit set was relatively low in the bottom portion of the inflorescence). Upper flowers may also be outcrossed because downward insect movement was not uncommon. Therefore protogyny in B. bullii may not necessarily lead to more selfing than would protandry.  相似文献

Ethyl hydrogen-1-propylphosphonate (Niagara 10637) at concentrations of 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/l had two different effects on sex expression ofRicinus communis L. cvIari 132. Higher concentrations (1000 and 2000 mg/l), applied just before emergence of inflorescence i.e. to 90 day old plants, induced a marked increase in female flower number and reduced the number of male flowers on the first inflorescence. However, there was a tendency towards maleness on the second and third inflorescences. When applied to 60 day old plants, the test compound induced a high degree of maleness on the first and second inflorescences. Gender and the structure of the inflorescence and flowers of Pappea capensis (Sapindaceae) are investigated in a locality around Pretoria (22-27°S and 25-32°E). The trees flower over a long period (December to April) and are basically monoecious, starting with male flowers followed by female flowers towards the end of the flowering period, although some trees may be predominantly male and some predominantly female. The inflorescence is a reduced thyrse with small flowers. Male flowers have five ephemeral petals, eight stamens and a rudimental pistil. Female flowers comprise a 3-lobed ovary, a single style and stigma and eight staminodes.  相似文献

It has been controversial how extensively ants contribute to pollination, and we evaluated the contribution of the Japanese carpenter ant, Camponotus japonicus, to the pollination of an orchid, Epipactis thunbergii. Two-year field studies revealed that (1) the ant workers foraged even in cool/cloudy conditions and accordingly visited orchid flowers more frequently (about 40% of all the visitors) than hover flies, the principle pollinators (10–20%), and that (2) the flower-visiting ants occasionally removed pollinia from the anther and then delivered pollen onto the stigmatic surface of other flowers, although self-pollination might frequently occur in the consecutive visits of flowers within an inflorescence. An artificial pollination experiment with pollinia which had been transferred to the ant integument showed that (3) the treated flowers produced as many fruits and seeds as control flowers. We concluded that C. japonicus workers could actually pollinate E. thunbergii flowers and their relative importance as pollinators appeared to be largely dependent on the abundance of flower-visiting workers or weather conditions during the flowering period, which mainly determined the availability of hover flies.  相似文献

The combined occurrence of both herkogamy and dichogamy in a hermaphrodite species has been considered to strongly favour outcrossing. In this study, we investigated in detail the reproductive ecology of Gentiana straminea Maxim. (Gentianaceae), a hermaphrodite perennial endemic to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In a series of observations and experiments over four consecutive years, we examined whether the combination of dichogamy and herkogamy in individual flowers completely prevents geitonogamous pollen transfer in this species. The mode of floral development clearly indicates that autonomous self-pollination is completely avoided through herkogamy and dichogamy in individual flowers. This implication was confirmed by the breeding experiments, since no seed was produced when flowers were isolated. However, this gentian proved to be highly self-compatible when geitonogamous selfing was artificially induced. Many flowers opened simultaneously on individual plants, the ratio of male to female phase flowers was close to 2:1 in each inflorescence at the full anthesis phase, and they were randomly distributed amongst the upper, middle and lower parts of each stem's inflorescence. On average, Bombus sushikini Skorikov, the most frequent visitor and only legitimate pollinator of G. straminea, visited nearly two flowers per inflorescence, and four flowers per plant. Among the pollinators' foraging bouts, the proportions of geitonogamous visits to inflorescences or flowers within an individual plant were 29% and 37%, respectively. Therefore, despite the strict dichogamous and herkogamous characteristics of the individual flowers, geitonogamous selfing might still prevail in G. straminea because of the size of its floral displays and the continuous visiting behavior of B. sushkini.  相似文献
