Of 30 bats belonging to four species, only one species, Brachyphylla cavernarum, yielded positive for Histoplasma capsulatun. Bats were collected at the Aguas Buenas Caves in Puerto Rico. The other species are: Artibeus jamaicensis, Monophyllus redmani portoricensis, and Erophylla bibombifrons; these resulted negative for the fungus.  相似文献

White mice were used to isolate H. capsulatum from the air in the Aguas Buenas Caves, Puerto Rico. Based on the infection of mice, the ten test sites yielded positive results for the presence of the fungus. Air currents through this cave are believed to be the most important factor responsible for the even distribution of H. capsulatum. Cultural differences concerning spore concentrations were observed. Age and sex of the exposed mice do not seen to play a role in acquiring histoplasmosis.  相似文献

Gypsum outcrops of southeastern Spain (Almeria) have been highlighted as the most outstanding for the conservation of Iberian gypsum flora by flora rarity and richness, as vascular as cryptogamic plants. However, plant community distribution patterns according to soil chemical properties have been little studied in these gypsum areas. Spatial distribution pattern of plant communities in gypsum hills and its relation to soil chemical properties was surveyed in this study. Twenty-one plots (5 × 5 m) were settled along a semiarid gypsum gradient in Rio de Aguas Basin. Soil samples were taken from each plot’s superficial layer for chemical analysis. Plant canopy cover was sampled at species level. Three plant community bands are identified (from bottom to top) as level I (Flat Piedmont Zone), level II (Hill Slope Zone), and level III (Hill Top Zone). Gypsophyte species (mainly found in level II) appear to be specifically adapted to nutrient-stressed environments (high sulfate content and deficiency in some soil nutrients). Nutrients play an essential ecological role in determining species distribution and community composition. Since this area is a very important site for extracting very high quality gypsum, the pattern described here can be used as a useful tool for ecological restoration of gypsum quarries. Considering environmental heterogeneity of gypsum areas (as an “ecosystem of reference”) is crucial for a successful ecological restoration.  相似文献

Distribution and abundance of disease vectors are directly related to climatic conditions and environmental changes. Remote sensing data have been used for monitoring environmental conditions influencing spatial patterns of vector‐borne diseases. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST) obtained from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and climatic factors (temperature, humidity, wind velocity, and accumulated rainfall) on the distribution and abundance of Anopheles species in northwestern Argentina using Poisson regression analyses. Samples were collected from December, 2001 to December, 2005 at three localities, Aguas Blancas, El Oculto and San Ramón de la Nueva Orán. We collected 11,206 adult Anopheles species, with the major abundance observed at El Oculto (59.11%), followed by Aguas Blancas (22.10%) and San Ramón de la Nueva Orán (18.79%). Anopheles pseudopunctipennis was the most abundant species at El Oculto, Anopheles argyritarsis predominated in Aguas Blancas, and Anopheles strodei in San Ramón de la Nueva Orán. Samples were collected throughout the sampling period, with the highest peaks during the spring seasons. LST and mean temperature appear to be the most important variables determining the distribution patterns and major abundance of An. pseudopunctipennis and An. argyritarsis within malarious areas.  相似文献

For the first time, a volumetric study ofBuenos Aires city atmosphere was conductedusing a Lanzoni collector from March 1997through March 1998. Fifty-four pollen typeswere recorded of which 13 had a relativeconcentration of more than 1% of the yearlytotal. The lowest concentration of pollengrains was recorded in June, when Urticas,pp., Morus spp., and Myrtaceae were low.On the other hand, the highest concentration ofpollen grains was reached in September, with anincrease in Fraxinus spp. Theaeropalynological record may be divided intothree periods: *AP Dominant from July toOctober, *NAP Dominant from November toMarch, and *Residual Period from April toJune with low pollen concentrations.The greatest number of species was recorded inNovember, when 32 types were present, and thelowest number of species in June, when only 13pollen types were recorded. In June, the pollenconcentration was not dominated by any specieswhereas in September 85% of the pollen wasderived from one species of Fraxinus.Earlier studies on the aeropalynology of BuenosAires City were performed using Tauber andRotorod samplers. They were comparable to thisstudy, especially since the pollen peak wasreached in September, although the main pollenproducing species were different.  相似文献

1 The objective of this study was to examine the structure of parasitoid assemblages attacking soybean defoliator Lepidoptera in north-western Buenos Aires province, Argentina. 2 Through larvae sampling from 1992 to 1996, and laboratory data plus the known biology of the species recorded during the study, parasitoid species composition, richness, number of guilds per host species, and levels of parasitism, were determined. 3 Total species richness was 23, all species were primary endoparasitoids, and categorized as koinobionts. They belonged to Hymenoptera (11 species) and Diptera (12 species). Rachiplusia nu (Noctuidae) hosted the highest number of parasitoid species. 4 Four parasitoid guilds were recorded for R. nu (egg–prepupal endoparasitoid, early larval endoparasitoid, late larval endoparasitoid, and larval–pupal endoparasitoid); two for Spilosoma virginica (Arctiidae) (late larval endoparasitoid and larval–pupal endoparasitoid) and Colias lesbia (Pieridae) (early larval endoparasitoid and larval–pupal endoparasitoid); and one for Anticarsia gemmatalis (Noctuidae) and Loxostege biffidalis (Pyralidae) (early larval endoparasitoid). 5 Only four out of seven potential parasitoid guilds defined for Lepidoptera were recorded in a soybean agroecosystem located in north-western Buenos Aires province, suggesting that potential host niches were not totally utilized. 6 Soybean lepidopteran defoliators supported a mean species richness of 4.8 parasitoids, a result that is similar to that reported for exophytic hosts in the Neotropics. 7 Parasitoid assemblages from each host differed in species composition, richness, number of guilds, and levels of parasitism.  相似文献

The spatial variation in gene frequencies of four unlinked polymorphic loci was studied in the teleost Fundulus heteroclitus. Three loci (Idh-A, Idh-B, and Est-S) exhibit significant north-south clinal variation in allelic frequencies along the Atlantic Coast of North America, while a fourth locus (6-Pgdh-A) shows a modest clinal variation. These data, together with our previous data for Ldh-B, Mdh-A, Gpi-B, and Pgm-A, reveal a pattern of low gene diversity in the colder northern extremes of the species range and high gene diversity in warmer southern latitudes.This work was supported by Grants DEB76-19877 and DEB79-12216 from the National Science Foundation and by Grant P60-80-04 from the State of Maryland. Moniligerum n. g. is erected for Moniligerum blairi n. sp. (Opisthotrematidae) and Nudacotyle undicola n. sp. (Nudacotylidae) is described, both from the small intestine of Trichechus manatus L. from Martin County, Florida. The new genus is placed in the family Opisthotrematidae Poche, 1926, subfamily Lankatrematinae Yamaguti, 1958. Moniligerum differs from other genera in the subfamily (Lankatrema Crusz & Fernand, 1954, and Lankatrematoides Blair, 1981) by the possession of an anterior collar and in the form of the ovary (compact and not transversely elongated) and vitellarium (single median lobed mass). Nudacotyle undicola differs from N. valdevaginatus, the most similar species, in body size, the length of the caeca, the shape of the vitellarium and the position of the genital pore, cirrus pouch and ovary.Supported in part by Cooperative Agreement No. 14-16-0008-1204 from the US Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Serivice. We analysed microhabitat use by the rodents Calomys tener, Necromys lasiurus and Thalpomys lasiotis and the factors that may influence their abundances in “murundu” grasslands (open fields with termite mounds) at Aguas Emendadas Ecological Station, Planaltina, Federal District, Brazil. Two grids with 100 sampling points were established and traps were placed at each intersection of the grid, where five microhabitat variables were also measured. Rodents were trapped from June through October 2008. Microhabitat explained 21% of the variation in community structure, with grass density and the number of termite mounds explaining most of the variation. Necromys lasiurus was most often captured in areas with dense grasses, whereas T. lasiotis and C. tener were most often in areas less dense with grasses.  相似文献

Summary Six hundred and seventy microorganisms were screened for the ability to perform stereoselective aromatic hydroxylation reactions of industrial significance, using aniline as a model substrate. TLC and HPLC analyses with diode array detection were used to identify and characterize hydroxylase activities. Of 79 cultures belonging to the speciesAspergillus alliaceus, A. albertensis, andA. terreus, 26 strains produced 2-aminophenol. Thirty strains were able to hydroxylate aniline in thepara position. Five strains ofA. terreus produced an unidentified phenolic compound in high yield.The mention of firm names or trade products does not imply that they are endorsed or recommended by the US Department of Agriculture over other firms or similar products not mentioned.  相似文献

Natural populations of Fundulus heteroclitus show extensive spatial variation in gene frequencies at four unlinked polymorphic loci. Large clinal changes in gene frequencies were found for Ldh-B, Mdh-A, and Gpi-B, whereas the spatial variation for the Pgm-B locus was small. Since the geographical area over which these clines are found is characterized by a steep thermal gradient, the clines in gene frequency are correlated with a directional change in mean water temperature. Maximum gene diversity of these four loci was correlated with annual fluctuations in water temperature. A total of 120 freshly harvested wheat samples from the 2004 season in nine locations from Northern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, were analysed for trichothecene natural occurrence and associated mycoflora, and for determining the influence of commonly used fungicide field treatment and the cultivar type on trichothecene contamination. The trichothecenes T-2 tetraol, T-2 triol, HT-2 and T-2 toxin (HT-2, T-2), diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS), nivalenol (NIV), deoxynivalenol (DON), 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3-ADON) and 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (15-ADON) were analysed by gas chromatography and electron capture detection. Detection limits ranged from 4 to 20 μg/kg. The isolation frequencies of species were calculated. Alternaria alternata, Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium poae and Fusarium semitectum were the predominant fungal species identified as endogenous mycoflora. The type of cultivar and the fungicide field treatment did not affect significantly the trichothecene contamination. The trichothecenes type A detected were HT-2 and T-2 triol toxins and the type B were DON, NIV and 3-ADON. Based on 120 samples the incidences were 21.7% for 3-ADON, 22.5% for HT-2, 27.5% for T-2 triol and 85% for DON. NIV was confirmed in one sample. Mean levels of trichothecene positive samples were between 7 and 2788 μg/kg.  相似文献

Aim To establish the relationship between coastal dune vegetation and its pollen representation as an aid to interpret Holocene vegetation dynamics and environmental changes from pollen assemblages. Location The study area is situated on the temperate Atlantic coast of south Buenos Aires Province, Argentina (c. 39° S and 61°20′ W). Methods The vegetation of the active dune area adjacent to the beach was described on the basis of its floristic composition from 25 plots. Classification of the vegetation into distinct zones was carried out by cluster analysis. Surface samples were collected from each vegetation stand and analysed for their pollen composition. Pollen percentage data were analysed using principal components analysis in order to investigate the degree to which the different vegetation units can be distinguished by their pollen spectra. Pollen–vegetation relationships for selected taxa were explored using simple scatter plots and indices of association, under‐ and over‐representation. Indices of floristic diversity and palynological richness were used to assess the representation of the vegetation in the pollen spectra. Results and conclusions Five vegetation zones are defined on the basis of species composition and their quantitative variation: back shore, mobile dunes, slacks, semi‐fixed and fixed dunes. Pollen assemblages from back shore, mobile dunes and slacks are clearly differentiated from semi‐fixed and fixed dunes. Pollen assemblages differ considerably from the associated vegetation composition. Major discrepancies are caused by large differences in pollen and vegetation proportion of Hyalis argentea and Discaria americana. There is a considerable proportion of non‐local pollen in every spectrum. Pollen representation in the coastal dunes at Monte Hermoso is influenced by differences in pollen production, dispersal and preservation of individual taxa as well as by the spatial distribution of the vegetation, the topography of the dune system and the wind pattern. The pollen–vegetation relationship established in this study has important implication for understanding and interpreting fossil pollen records from coastal dune environments.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of Psolus patagonicus Ekman 1925 was studied. The species exhibits an annual reproductive cycle with one reproductive period in austral summer (February–March). During spring and summer, females showed the highest gonad-index (GI) values, while the GI values of males did not vary significantly throughout the year. Males had higher GI values than females. Maximum oocyte diameters ranged from less than 300?µm in spring to 900?µm in summer. In February, there is an increase in phytoplankton bloom for the bottom community in which P. patagonicus inhabits. The annual range in water temperature is small (6–7°C). Spawning coincided with increase in available food rather than the increase in water temperature.  相似文献

Background: Helicobacter pylori infection is declining in developed and developing countries. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate over an 8‐year period the rate of H. pylori infection in children with gastrointestinal symptoms from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Materials and Methods: We reviewed the records of children referred from 2002 to 2009 to the gastroenterology unit of the Children Hospital “Superiora Sor Maria Ludovica” for evaluation of upper gastrointestinal signs and symptoms in which the 13C‐urea breath test was performed to diagnose H. pylori infection and a sociodemographic questionnaire was obtained. Results: Records of a total of 1030 children and adolescents with a mean age of 9.99 years were included in the analysis. We found an H. pylori prevalence of 41.2% (95% CI, 36.9–46.0%) for the triennium 2002–2004, dropping to 26.0% (95% CI, 20.7–31.8%) in the triennium 2007–2009. Conclusion: Our results showed a significant decrease in H. pylori infection rates from children referred for upper gastrointestinal symptoms evaluation from 2002 to 2009, following the H. pylori epidemiologic trend reported in other countries.  相似文献

In 1981 the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Biological Control of Weeds Laboratory (BCWL, Rome, Italy) started investigating the host specificity ofP. inspersa as a candidate for biological control ofC. diffusa andC. maculosa, and in 1985 the investigation was completed at the USDA Biological Control of Weeds Laboratory at Albany, California. Thirty five species of plants in the familyAsteraceae and 23 other species in 8 related families were tested. Larval survival beyond 1st instar occurred only onCentaurea spp. except for 1 larva found inCnicus benedictus L.P. inspersa is stenophagous onCentaurea, therefore, a good candidate for introduction into North America.   相似文献

The embryo sac of Linum usitatissimum consists, as in most angiosperms, of the egg, two synergids, central cell and antipodals. In Linum the embryo sac is strongly polarized in the longitudinal axis, but rotationally random relative to the vascular bundles of the ovule and ovary. Synergids designated right or left based on their orientation relative to the egg can be distinguished unambiguously if viewed from one pole of the embryo sac — in this case, the chalaza was used as the reference point. The synergid most likely to degenerate is the left (60%), proximal (52.3%) or septal-facing (52.7%) synergid. The volume and the surface area of the filiform apparatus of the left synergid is significantly smaller than that of the right synergid. Synergid-degeneration patterns varied between individual plants, indicating genetic control; however, the preference for the proximal and septal-facing synergid, although weak, indicates the possibility of some physiological influence. The cotyledons appear to assume bilateral symmetry with respect to the ovule only once endosperm digestion has begun. As the cotyledons grow, the embryo rotates to occupy the widest part of the embryo sac, thus imposing bilateral symmetry between the embryo and seed; prior to that time, the early and heart-shaped embryos are randomly oriented.This research was supported by U.S. Department of Agriculture grant 88-37261-3761. Sex is genetically determined in Histoplasma capsulatum, governed by a sex-specific region in the genome called the mating-type locus (MAT1). We investigate the distribution of isolates of two H. capsulatum mating types in the clades circulating in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Forty-nine H. capsulatum isolates were obtained from the culture collection of the Mycology Center. The MAT1 locus was identified by PCR from the yeast suspension. The analysis of forty-eight isolates from clinical samples exhibited a ratio of 1.7 (MAT1-1:MAT1-2) and the only isolate from soil was MAT1-1. Forty-five H. capsulatum isolates belonged to the LAm B clade (H. capsulatum from Latin American group B clade) and showed a ratio of 1.8 (MAT1-1:MAT1-2). These results suggest an association between the mating types in isolates belonging to the LAm B clade. It remains to be defined whether a greater virulence should be attributed to the differences between the strains of the opposite mating type of the LAm B clade.
