This study investigated some aspects of the reproductive biology of male and female greater bandicoot rats,Bandicota indica,in southern Thailand from September 2004 to September 2006. In females,body,uterine and preputial gland weights,occurrences of pregnancies and placental scars,and in males,testicalar weights and histology,and sizes of accessory sex glands,were recorded. Pregnancies occurred predominantly,but not exclusively,in the wet season,with a higher incidence pregnancies in the second,than in the first,dry season. Uterine and preputial gland weights tended to be lower in the first,but not the second dry season,with placental scars occurring at all times of year. Males tended to have heavier testes in the wet season but some seminiferous tubules contained sperm even in the dry season. Seminal vesicles,but not prostates and preputial glands,tended to be heavier in animals in the wet season. We conclude that the greater bandieoot rat in southern Thailand shows maximal reproductive activity in the wet season with some reproductive activity,albeit variable from year to year,occurring in the dry season depending upon environmental conditions. This study has also shown that females,as well as males,have large preputial glands,and that males invariably have small testes regardless of the time of year. These observations suggest a similar timing of reproduction,but a different breeding biology and perhaps social organisation,from that of the sympatric ricefield rat,Rattus argentiventer.  相似文献

The reproductive activity of two species of wild rodents was studied in the Serra do Rola‐Moça State Park (PERM), in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. From October 1998 to October 1999 specimens of Akodon montensis (Thomas 1913) were captured in an area of seasonal semi‐deciduous forest, while specimens of Bolomys lasiurus (Lund 1840) were captured in a cerrado area (a savannah‐like grassland). The determination of the reproductive condition was based on histological and histometric analyses of testes and external characteristics of gonads. The volume of the testes, diameter of the seminiferous tubules and depth of the seminiferous epithelium were measured. Akodon montensis showed a seasonal annual reproductive cycle divided into four stages (recrudescence, activity or proliferation, regression and rest) with the reproductive activity mainly occurring during the rainy season. In contrast, B. lasiurus presented reproductive activity during almost the whole year. For both species the volume of the testes was an effective indicator of their reproductive condition. We suggest that the histological and histometric analysis of the gonads of males, together with the observations of external characteristics of gonads of males and females, may assist in identifying the reproductive condition of these animals.  相似文献

Testis and ovarian maturation status, maturity profile and gonado-somatic index (GSI) were assessed in pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) collected from Mirgenbach, a cooling-water reservoir associated with a nuclear power plant, and from the River Moselle 7 km downstream of the reservoir's thermal outflow. Histological investigation indicated that in both sexes, gonadal development of pumpkinseed in the heated reservoir was more advanced than in the cooler Moselle River throughout the breeding season. The histological maturity profile of reservoir males ranked by the advancement of sperm cells was highly correlated with its GSI (rs=0.73, P<0.001). GSI of females in the reservoir increased with the stage at maturity, but GSI was not significantly correlated with total length, age or growth rate of the individual. All sampled individuals of both sexes were mature at age 1 in the heated reservoir, whereas 48% of age 1 males and 57% of age 1 females were not mature in the river. GSI patterns suggest that males in the reservoir adopted one of two reproductive strategies (nesters or cuckolders), whereas no small males with large enough testes to be considered cuckolders were apparent in the river. The warm thermal regime of Mirgenbach Reservoir led to precocial maturity, early season reproduction, and the greater prevalence of apparent cuckolder males than would normally occur in this climatic zone.  相似文献

Dasyurid marsupials show a remarkable diversity of reproductive patterns ranging from aseasonal polyoestry to restricted annual breeding in which males synchronously die after a brief mating season. Previous studies have categorized dasyurid reproduction into six strategies, defined on the basis of five life-history characters. We provide an up-to-date summary of reproductive traits in dasyurid species and examine the evolution of these characters on a phylogeny for the family recently obtained from DNA sequence data. Our results suggest that reproductive evolution in modern dasyurids is characterized by a basal separation of subfamily lineages employing Strategy II (monoestrous females, restricted breeding season, 11 months to maturity; Dasyurinae) and Strategy V (polyoestrous females, extended breeding season, 8–11 months to maturity; Sminthopsinae). Strategies I (male die-off) and III (facultative polyoestry) appear to have arisen several times from Strategy II or V ancestors, and Strategy IV appears to have arisen within Sminthopsis from a Strategy V ancestor. Strategy VI (aseasonal breeding) has arisen independently in each of the four major dasyurid lineages (tribes), and is highly (but not perfectly) correlated with New Guinean endemism. This scenario is not strongly affected if reproductive characters are optimized on an alternative phylogeny more consistent with morphology-based opinions on species relationships. When evaluated in light of current habitat associations and geographic distributions, the reproductive data suggest that the Miocene diversification of modern dasyurids may have been correlated with the invasion of dry forest or woodland habitats.  相似文献

With a nearly global distribution the vespertilionid bat Myotis represents one of the most exceptional examples of adaptive radiation among mammals. We investigated the reproductive activity of the vespertilionid bat yellowish myotis, Myotis levis, from a highland area in Southeastern Brazil. The data were obtained through histological analyses of the male and female genital systems from February 2010 to May 2011. The testes of the adult yellowish myotis showed seasonal morphological characteristics which were categorized in the following stages: rest, maturing, mature, and mating. Rest and maturing males were recorded throughout the rainy season (October‐March). In the rest stage no spermatogenesis was observed and the epididymal duct was devoid of spermatozoa. Maturing individuals had started spermatogenesis and few spermatozoa were found in the epididymal duct. Mature males were found toward the end (February‐March) of the rainy season, when full spermatogenic activity was recorded and spermatozoa were packed in the epididymal duct. Although not recorded, mating probably occurred in the middle of the dry season (April–September) when the cauda epididymis was enlarged and packed with sperm. The spermatozoa remained stored in the cauda epididymis for at least three months when the testes entered into regression. The ovaries showed all types of ovarian follicles throughout the study period except mature follicles which were registered only in July (mid‐dry season). Lactating females were captured in the beginning of the rainy season. The seasonal reproductive characteristics of the yellowish myotis from this Neotropical highland area were similar those of epididymal sperm‐storing temperate vespertilionids. J. Seasonal reproduction is a common characteristic of many small mammals which inhabit seasonal environments in temperate regions, the sub-tropics as well as the tropics. It is important for an animal to reproduce during the most favourable time of the year to ensure the survival of the young and maximize reproductive success. In southern Africa, female spiny mice (Acomys spinosissimus) breed during the warm and wet spring and summer months, whereas the reproductive pattern of males is unknown although an opportunistic breeding pattern has been implicated. We investigated testes mass and volume, seminiferous tubule diameter, spermatogenesis and plasma testosterone concentrations in a South African population of male spiny mice on a 2-monthly basis over one year. Testes mass and volume started to increase in July/August and was high from September until December. Seminiferous tubule diameter and spermatogenesis increased during the same months. Plasma testosterone concentration was elevated from July/August to November/December. Development of the reproductive characteristics of male spiny mice was correlated with high rainfall and high ambient temperatures, but reproductive development had already started during the dry season and the coldest months. This shows that reproductive development in males may not be dependent on climatic conditions, and other factors, such as photoperiod, may trigger the onset of reproduction. The data, however, suggest that A. spinosissimus is a true seasonal breeder with reproduction confined to the spring and summer months in southern Africa.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism patterns provide an opportunity to increase our understanding of trait evolution. Because selective forces may vary throughout the reproductive period, measuring dimorphism seasonally may be an interesting approach. An increased male head size may be important in intersexual and intrasexual interactions. In Tupinambis lizards, a big head is attributed in part to a large adductor muscle mass. Competition for mating can differ in species with different sex ratio and different degrees of sexual size dimorphism. We examined sexual differences in mass of the pterygoideus muscle, its temporal variation throughout the reproductive period and the relationship between muscle and reproductive condition in Tupinambis merianae and T. rufescens. We characterized sexual size dimorphism and sex ratio in both species. Mature males had larger jaw muscles than mature females in both species, mainly during the reproductive season. The dimorphism in jaw muscle was due to an increase in muscle mass in sexually active males. Seasonal increases in muscle mass and variation between immature and mature individuals suggest that the jaw muscle might be a secondary sexual character. We propose that the pterygoideus muscle may act as a signal of reproductive condition of males because it is associated with testis size and sperm presence. The patterns of sexual dimorphism in jaw muscle in both species were similar; however, the comparison shows how sexual characters remain dimorphic in different competition contexts and in species with different degrees of body size dimorphism. Our results suggest that jaw muscle as sexual character could be influenced by inter- and intrasexual selective pressures.  相似文献

Pocket gophers (Orthogemys cherriei) is a pest in agriculture in Limón, Costa Rica; 232 animals were trapped in several farms. They reproduce continuously throughout the year. Adults of both sexes are found in reproductive condition at any time. The females produce at least 2 litters per year (1-4 newborns each). There is no correlation between position of testes and production of sperm. The position of the testes is not a reliable factor to establish the reproductive condition in males. There is a correlation between length of os penis (baculum) and length of the testes, irrespectively of its reproductive condition. These pocket gophers disperse above-ground.  相似文献

A population of cloud forest mice (Peromyscus nudipes) at latitude 10 degrees N near Monteverde, Costa Rica, was sampled four times by live-trapping twice during the 7-8 month wet season and twice during the 4-5 month dry season in 1989 and 1990. Body weights were lower during the early part of the dry season in males and throughout the dry season in females than at other times. Testes and seminal vesicles were somewhat lighter early in the dry season, but epididymal spermatozoa were abundant in most males throughout the year. Adult females ovulated, mated and became pregnant in the wet and dry seasons, but young were produced only during the wet season. Most embryos failed to implant during the dry season, and the few that did complete implantation were reabsorbed before midpregnancy. Apparently, every year, the females in this population spend several months actively engaged in a behavioural and metabolically costly process that is doomed to be unsuccessful. This reproductive strategy is termed pseudoseasonal, because reproductive success is highly seasonal, but attempts to reproduce are nonseasonal. Implantation failures similar to those seen in the wild were induced in the laboratory using mild restriction of food or water. Field evidence points to food restriction as the more important cause of pregnancy losses in the wild. Exposure to the gradually changing daylengths typical of Costa Rica had no effect on the production of young by adults, and maintenance on light cycles of 8 h light: 16 h dark, 11 h light: 13 h dark, 13 h light: 11 h dark and 16 h light: 8 h dark had no effect on the reproductive development of young animals of either sex.  相似文献

In this paper we describe the timing and correlates of molt for a native population of golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia). We conducted 820 examinations of 267 adult tamarins over a 7.75 year period to determine the annual molting cycle in this population. Dorsal molt was an annual event for most individuals in the study population; however, 10% of sampled individuals apparently molted twice in a 12 month period. Duration of molt was estimated at 5–6 weeks. The proportion of samples in which tamarins were in molt was significantly greater during the wet season than the dry season and positively correlated with mean monthly precipitation and minimum temperature but not tamarin births, suggesting an environmental component to timing of molt. We found no sex differences in the occurrence of molt during wet or dry seasons. However, the relative frequency of samples in molt was significantly less for gravid females than for nongravid females. In four polygynous groups, socially dominant females gave birth before subordinate females, and younger reproductive females completed molt before older reproductive females. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Male investment in testes and sperm duct gland in the polygamous nest breeding two-spotted goby Gobiusculus flavescens (Fabricius) was investigated in relation to time in reproductive season and individual physical parameters. This small teleost fish is most likely the most abundant species found along the rocky shores of the North East Atlantic. The two-spotted goby has a single reproductive season, during which nest-caring males can raise several clutches of offspring. According to the literature the males are on average larger than the females. Here we report for the first time a population showing a reversal of this trend, with males on average being smaller than females, a difference likely caused by a large proportion of small males. Early in the breeding season these small males have typical sneaker characters, with relatively large testes and small seminal duct glands compared to the larger dominant territorial males. The presence of these two alternative male reproductive tactics is confirmed by histological studies, which shows the presence of sperm in the sperm duct glands (SDG) of smaller males, but not in the SDG of intermediate and larger males. To our knowledge, males with typical sneaker characters have not been reported in earlier studied populations of two-spotted goby. Interestingly we found that testes investment declined significantly over the course of the breeding season, and that this reduction was significantly more pronounced in small compared to the large males. Further, a significant increase in seminal duct gland (SDG) mass was observed for the smaller males over the breeding season. We propose that this indicates a possible shift in mating tactic by smaller males from a parasitic to a nest-holding tactic over the course of the breeding season. Thus, the observed size dependent plasticity in investment in SDG over time suggests that the reproductive tactic of G. flavescens is conditional, and possibly influenced by mate availability and male—male competition.  相似文献

We describe the gonadal and abdominal fat storage cycles for a population of Caiman crocodilus fuscus kept in captivity at a breeding farm. The reproductive cycles of males and females are clearly seasonal. Vitellogenic follicles were observed in females year‐round; however, the follicular growth that produces the preovulatory follicles for the breeding season occurs in November–May (most of the dry season to the beginning of the rainy season). These months correspond with the presence of physiologically reproductive males. Oviposition takes place during the wet season (April–August) and the births occur at the end of this season (September–November). Fat storage was not related to reproductive activity, and did not vary by month or between sexes. Although environmental and hormonal conditions have been improved for these captive animals, they maintain a strongly seasonal reproductive cycle, historically fixed to oviposit in the most favorable period for nest construction and hatching during the rainy season. Early puberty may increase lifetime reproductive success, but may also entail diverse costs. In male European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus), age at sexual maturity varies among individuals. We compared sexually active and inactive yearling males under standardized conditions in outdoor enclosures. Non-reproductive yearling males hibernated significantly longer than mature males and emerged when the mating period had already started. Testosterone concentrations peaked in the precocious males during premating and mating, and were depressed in the non-reproductive individuals throughout the study period. Emergence body mass was similar in both groups, although sexually immature males were significantly heavier at the end of the active season. Additionally, non-reproductive yearlings grew faster than precocious individuals. Male–male aggression peaked during mating and the following 4 weeks. Intense aggressive interactions like chases and fights were mostly initiated by reproductive males and were directed towards mature competitors. Aggressive behavior in immature males was mainly expressed as spatial displacements. Non-agonistic interactions with females were only observed in sexually active males. Concentrations of fecal cortisol metabolites did not differ between the two male groups and were elevated in the second half of the active season. Leucocyte numbers were reduced during mating in mature males, whereas in immature animals, cell numbers did not change significantly. Our results indicate that early puberty in European ground squirrels involves lower growth rates, high intrasexual aggression, lower prehibernatory body mass, and probably worse immunological condition during mating.  相似文献

Mexico has the largest number of leporid species in the world but most have been little studied. The endemic Mexican cottontailSylvilagus cunicularius (Waterhouse, 1848) is the largest Mexican rabbit, and although not in danger of extinction, it is increasingly threatened. Since little is known about its annual pattern of reproduction, we studied this species in La Malinche National Park, central Mexico, whereS. cunicularius is still common. For 7 years we trapped and marked 157 different individuals (plus 59, sometimes multiple, re-captures), determining across the year the percent of adult females that were reproductively active, the number of juveniles as a percent of total captures, and the percent of males with scrotal testes. Reproductively active females were present throughout the year but with a notable peak from March to October, juveniles were present throughout the year but with a peak from September to December, and adult males had scrotal testes throughout the year with no seasonal change in testis length. Onset of the breeding season coincided with increasing day length and temperature, and births with high rainfall. Thus, in central MexicoS. cunicularius breeds throughout the year but particularly during the warmer, wetter summer months. We therefore recommend that hunting only be permitted from November to February.  相似文献

In four large aviaries, we studied social assortment and reproductive behaviour of female brown-headed cowbirds housed with males differing in age class and in corresponding levels of intrasexual interaction. Juvenile and adult females resided with either (1) adult males, (2) juvenile males, (3) adult and juvenile males, or (4) no males. We observed social behaviour of males and females from September 1999 through to the 2000 breeding season. Throughout the year, males in the different conditions showed different levels of social interaction, with adult males being most engaged in male-male interactions and juvenile males being least engaged in male-male interactions. Females in the four conditions differed in their associations with males and with other females. In conditions with adult males, females spent more time near males, approached males more often, and associated with females less. During the breeding season, females in conditions with more adult males copulated more and produced more fertile and viable eggs. In the condition where females were housed with juvenile males, they copulated less, laid fewer eggs and destroyed more of their eggs. Results indicate that throughout the year, females are sensitive to male age and behaviour in their social group, and that this sensitivity can have reproductive consequences. The reproductive biology of blacktip sawtail catsharks,Galeus sauteri, in northeastern Taiwan waters was investigated. Male catsharks possessed paired testes producing spermatozoa, which were then stored in the epididymides all year round. No spermatophores were observed in the lower ductus deferens. Only the right ovary was functional in females, oogonia being formed in the ovarian cortex and then developing into mature ova. Ova exceeding 17 mm in diameter were ovulated. Pregnant individuals contained one eggcase only, in each side of the uterus. No hatched embryos were observed in such eggcases. The size at which 50% of blacktip sawtail catshark specimens were mature was 410–420 mm and 350–360 mm for females and males, respectively. The species does not have a well-defined reproductive season.  相似文献

Synopsis Testicular maturation indices (TMI) were determined for wild-caught males ofPoecilia mexicana by quantitative analysis of the frequency of ongoing stages of spermatogenesis and spermatid differentiation in sections of testes stained with the Feulgen reaction for DNA. In nature, males maintain essentially constant levels of sperm production throughout the year and show no significant variations in mean TMI values associated with season, microhabitat, standard body length, or rank in male dominance hierarchies. Winter males or males isolated from females in the laboratory show accumulation of mature spermatophores. These findings suggest that fluctuations in the microstructure of wild populations ofPoecilia from northeastern Mexico may be due primarily to differences in the temporal scheduling of female reproductive cycles and not to limitations imposed by sperm availability or male reproductive competence. The data are discussed in terms of competitive interactions within unisexual-bisexual breeding complexes involving the Amazon mollyP. formosa, its related triploid hybrids, and the bisexual species,P. mexicana.  相似文献

A total of 1248 rabbits ( Oryctolagus amiculus ) were shot on farmland in Cambridgeshire, UK over a period of three years. This provided pooled estimates of changes in reproductive and body condition and of fecundity during the annual cycle. Both males and females showed a significant annual cycle in reproductive condition as indicated by changes in the size of the gonads and accessory glands of reproduction. No females were pregnant during October, November and December, but males with active spermatogenesis were found during every month of the year. The distribution of pregnancies through the year showed that the reproductive season varied greatly between individuals. Peak fecundity occurred during April, May and June. On average, each female conceived 23.9 and suckled 17.2 young per breeding season. Proportionately more young died during the early stages of the reproductive season. The body weight of adult males, but not of females, varied seasonally. Body condition (kidney fat index) in adults was maximal at the start of the breeding season and minimal at the end.  相似文献

Sportive lemurs are threatened species in the IUCN Red Data Book. However, quantitative information on their reproduction, urgently required for conservation, has been lacking. We collected first data on reproductive activity of Milne-Edwards’ sportive lemurs in a population inhabiting the dry deciduous forest of the Ankarafantsika National Park in northwestern Madagascar during 1998, 2001, and 2003. The species showed a seasonal reproduction. The main mating season extended from May to June, as indicated by the presence of males with high testes volumes and estrus females. In the mating and early postmating season and in the postparturition season, sexes did not differ in body mass. Females had a significantly higher body mass than males in August and November, indicating pregnancy, which together with the presence of small infants in October and November implies that gravidity in females lasted for about 4–5 mo. All litters consisted of singletons. Individuals with body mass at the lower limit of the population either did not develop measurable testes volumes (males) or were not in estrus (females). They were probably juveniles from the previous birth season that achieved sexual maturity not before their second year after birth. The first data on reproduction suggest a low reproduction rate for Lepilemur edwardsi and a request for a higher conservation status than previously attributed and the need for further management strategies.  相似文献
