Mapping of salinization using the satellite derived vegetation indices (VIs) remains difficult at broad regional scales due to the low classification accuracy. Satellite derived VIs from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) have more potential because the MODIS balances the requirements of spatial detail, spectral and temporal density and tends to reflect vegetation responses through time. However, the relationship between MODIS data and salinity may be underestimated in previous studies because the MODIS time series data were not investigated thoroughly, especially regarding vegetation phenology. This study assessed the applicability of MODIS time series VI data for monitoring soil salinization with a series of MODIS pixels selected in the Yellow River Delta, China. The hidden information in vegetation phenology was investigated by improving the quality of VIs time series data with the Savitzky–Golay filter, extracting the phenological markers and differentiating VIs time series data based on vegetation types. The results showed that the quality of the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) time series data were improved by the Savitzky–Golay filter, which could provide more accurate thresholds of phenological stages than the empirical definition. The seasonal integral of EVI (EVI-SI) extracted from the smoothed EVI time series profile was verified as the best indicator of the degree of soil salinity. Additionally, the correlation of EVI-SI and soil salinity was highly dependent on land cover heterogeneity, and the ranges of correlation coefficients were as high as 0.59–0.92. EVI-SI was linearly correlated with ECe in cropland with a high model fit (R2 = 0.85). The relationship of EVI-SI and ECe fit best with a binomial line and EVI-SI was able to explain 70% of the variance of ECe. Despite the poor fit of the linear regression model in mixed sites limited by spatial resolution (R2 = 0.32), MODIS time series VI data, as well as the extracted seasonal parameters, still show great potential to assess large-scale soil salinization.  相似文献

Wetland creation is a common practice for compensatory mitigation in the United States. Vegetation attributes have been used as a quick measure of mitigation success in most post-creation monitoring, while little attention has been paid to soils that provide the substrate for flora and fauna to establish and develop. Created wetland soils are often found not indicative of ‘hydric soil’ with a lack of development of physicochemical properties (i.e., bulk density, moisture content, and carbon and nitrogen contents) comparable to those in natural wetlands. Moreover, soil bacterial communities are rarely examined though they are integrally involved in biogeochemical functions that are critical for ecosystem development in created wetlands. We analyzed soil physicochemistry and profiled soil bacterial community structure using amplicon length heterogeneity polymerase chain reaction (LH-PCR) of 16S ribosomal DNA in three relatively young wetlands (<10 years old) created in the Piedmont region of Virginia. We examined the data by site and by specific conditions of each site (i.e., induced microtopography and hydrologic regime). Multidimensional scaling (MDS) and analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) showed clear clustering and significant differences both in soil physicochemistry (Global R = 0.70, p = 0.001) and in soil bacterial community profiles (Global R = 0. 77, p = 0.001) between sites. Soil physicochemistry (Global R = 1, p = 0.005) and bacterial community structure (Global R = 0.79, p = 0.005) of soils significantly differed by hydrologic regime within a wetland, but not by microtopography treatment. A significant association was found between physicochemistry and bacterial community structure in wetland soils, revealing a close link between two attributes (ρ = 0.39, p = 0.002). C/N (carbon to nitrogen) ratio was the best predictor of soil bacterial community patterns (ρ = 0.56, p = 0.001). The diversity of soil bacterial community (Shannon's H′) differed between sites with a slightly higher diversity observed in a relatively older created wetland, and seemed also fairly determined by hydrologic regime of a site, with a relatively dry site being more diverse.  相似文献

An accurate and updated natural vegetation map is imperative for sustainable environmental management. This paper proposed a novel natural vegetation mapping algorithm based on time series images. Several indices of temporal dispersion and continuity were established for this purpose: low density (LD), medium density (MD), high density (HD) and medium continuity (MC). These indices were developed based on the particular percentiles-determined section of the EVI2 temporal profiles obtained through continuous wavelet transform. The natural vegetation was generally characterized as with lower temporal dispersion and greater temporal continuity compared with agricultural crops. The proposed methodology incorporated the indices of temporal dispersion and continuity and was applied to 13 provinces in central East China based on 500 m 8-day composite Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Enhanced Vegetation Index with two bands (EVI2) in 2013. An overall accuracy of 92.97% was obtained when compared with 2715 ground truth sites. There was also a good agreement (kappa index = 0.8049) on the distribution and areas of different vegetation types between the MODIS-estimated image and the Landsat 8 OLI interpreted data on two test regions. This study demonstrated the efficiency of the transform and metric integrated time series classification approaches in the fields of land and vegetation cover mapping.  相似文献

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the standard for assessing fragility fracture risk using areal bone mineral density (aBMD), but only explains 60–70% of the variation in bone strength. High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) provides 3D-measures of bone microarchitecture and volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), but only at the wrist and ankle. Finite element (FE) models can estimate bone strength with 86–95% precision. The purpose of this study is to determine how well vBMD and FE bone strength at the wrist and ankle relate to fracture strength at the hip and spine, and to compare these relationships with DXA measured directly at those axial sites. Cadaveric samples (radius, tibia, femur and L4 vertebra) were compared within the same body. The radius and tibia specimens were assessed using HR-pQCT to determine vBMD and FE failure load. aBMD from DXA was measured at the femur and L4 vertebra. The femur and L4 vertebra specimens were biomechanically tested to determine failure load. aBMD measures of the axial skeletal sites strongly correlated with the biomechanical strength for the L4 vertebra (r = 0.77) and proximal femur (r = 0.89). The radius correlated significantly with biomechanical strength of the L4 vertebra for vBMD (r = 0.85) and FE-derived strength (r = 0.72), but not with femur strength. vBMD at the tibia correlated significantly with femoral biomechanical strength (r = 0.74) and FE-estimated strength (r = 0.83), and vertebral biomechanical strength for vBMD (r = 0.97) and FE-estimated strength (r = 0.91). The higher correlations at the tibia compared to radius are likely due to the tibia’s weight-bearing function.  相似文献

Identification of stressors related to biological impairment is critical to biological assessments. We applied nationally derived tolerance indicator values for four water-quality variables to fish and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages at 29 sites along an urban gradient in New England. Tolerance indicator values (TIVs), as biologically based predictors of water-quality variables, were determined for dissolved oxygen, nitrite plus nitrate (nitrate), total phosphorus, and water temperature for each site based on observed biological assemblages (TIVO), and for expected assemblages (TIVE). The quotient method, based on a ratio of the TIVs for observed and expected assemblages (tolerance units), was used to diagnose potential water-quality stressors. In addition, the ratio of measured water-quality values to water-quality criteria (water-quality units) was calculated for each water-quality variable to assess measured water-quality stressors. Results from a RIVPACS predictive model for benthic macroinvertebrates and Bray-Curtis dissimilarity for fish were used to classify sites into categories of good or impaired ecological condition. Significant differences were detected between good and impaired sites for all biological tolerance units (fish and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages averaged) except for nitrate (P = 0.480), and for all water-quality units except for nitrate (P = 0.183). Diagnosis of water-quality stressors at selected sites was, in general, consistent with State-reported causes of impairment. Tolerance units for benthic macroinvertebrate and fish assemblages were significantly correlated for water temperature (P = 0.001, r = 0.63), dissolved oxygen (P = 0.001, r = 0.61), and total phosphorus (P = 0.001, r = 0.61), but not for nitrate (P = 0.059, r = −0.35). Differences between the two assemblages in site-specific diagnosis of water-quality stressors may be the result of differences in nitrate tolerance.  相似文献

Accurate and timely rice mapping is important for food security and environmental sustainability. We developed a novel approach for rice mapping through Combined Consideration of Vegetation phenology and Surface water variations (CCVS). Variation of the Land Surface Water Index (LSWI) in rice fields was relatively smaller than that in other crops fields during the period from tillering to heading dates. Therefore, the ratios of change amplitude of LSWI to 2-band Enhanced Vegetation Index 2 (EVI2) during that period were utilized as the primary metric for paddy rice mapping. This algorithm was applied to map paddy rice fields in southern China using an 8-day composite Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) in 2013. The resultant rice cropping map was consistent with the agricultural census data (r2 = 0.8258) and ground truth observations (overall accuracy = 93.4%). Validation with Landsat Thematic Mapper images in test regions also revealed its high accuracy (with overall accuracy of 94.3% and kappa coefficient of 0.86). The proposed CCVS method was more robust to intra-class variability and other related uncertainties compared with other related methods in rice mapping. Its successful application in southern China revealed its efficiency and great potential for further utilization.  相似文献

Global rivers connect three large carbon reservoirs in the world: soil, atmosphere, and ocean. The amount and spatial pattern of riverine carbon flux are essential for the global carbon budget but are still not well understood. Therefore, three linear regression models for riverine DOC (dissolved organic carbon), POC (particulate organic carbon), and DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon) fluxes were established with related generating and transfer factors based on an updated global database. The three models then were applied to simulate the spatial distribution of riverine DOC, POC, and DIC fluxes and to estimate the total global riverine carbon flux. The major conclusions of this study are as follows: the correlation analysis showed that riverine DOC flux is significantly related to discharge (r2 = 0.93, n = 109) and soil organic carbon amount (r2 = 0.60), POC flux increases with discharge (r2 = 0.55, n = 98) and amount of soil erosion (r2 = 0.48), and DIC flux is strongly linked to CO2 consumption by rock weathering (r2 = 0.66, n = 111) and discharge (r2 = 0.63). In addition, Asia exports more DOC and POC than other continents and North America exports more DIC. The Atlantic Ocean accepts the major portion of riverine DOC, POC, and DIC fluxes of all the oceans. The highest riverine DOC flux occurs in the 0–30°S zone, and the highest riverine POC and DIC fluxes appear in the 30–60°N zone. Furthermore, re-estimation revealed that global rivers export approximately 1.06 Pg C to oceans every year, including 0.24 Pg DOC, 0.24 Pg POC, 0.41 Pg DIC, and 0.17 Pg PIC.  相似文献

Brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP) was implicated in the regulation of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenocortical (HPA) responses to psychological stressors. However, HPA axis activation in different physical stress models and its interface with NT-pro-BNP in the prediction of cardiopulmonary performance is unclear. Cardiopulmonary test on a treadmill was used to assess cardiopulmonary parameters in 16 elite male wrestlers (W), 21 water polo player (WP) and 20 sedentary age-matched subjects (C). Plasma levels of NT-pro-BNP, cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) were measured using immunoassay sandwich technique, radioimmunoassay and radioimmunometric techniques, respectively, 10 min before test (1), at beginning (2), at maximal effort (3), at 3rd min of recovery (4). In all groups, NT-pro-BNP decreased between 1 and 2; increased from 2 to 3; and remained unchanged until 4. ACTH increased from 1 to 4, whereas cortisol increased from 1 to 3 and stayed elevated at 4. In all groups together, ΔNT-pro-BNP2/1 predicted peak oxygen consumption (B = 37.40, r = 0.38, p = 0.007); cortisol at 3 predicted heart rate increase between 2 and 3 (r = −0.38,B = −0.06, p = 0.005); cortisol at 2 predicted peak carbon-dioxide output (B = 2.27, r = 0.35, p < 0.001); ΔACTH3/2 predicted peak ventilatory equivalent for carbon-dioxide (B = 0.03, r = 0.33, p = 0.003). The relation of cortisol at 1 with NT-pro-BNP at 1 and 3 was demonstrated using logistic function in all the participants together (for 1/cortisol at 1 B = 63.40, 58.52; r = 0.41, 0.34; p = 0.003, 0.013, respectively). ΔNT-pro-BNP2/1 linearly correlated with ΔACTH4/3 in WP and W (r = −0.45, −0.48; p = 0.04, 0.04, respectively). These results demonstrate for the first time that HPA axis and NT-pro-BNP interface in physical stress probably contribute to integrative regulation of cardiopulmonary performance.  相似文献

A study was conducted to understand the potential of Landsat-8 in the estimation of gross primary production (GPP) and to quantify the productivity of maize crop cultivated under hyper-arid conditions of Saudi Arabia. The GPP of maize crop was estimated by using the Vegetation Photosynthesis Model (VPM) utilizing remote sensing data from Landsat-8 reflectance (GPPVPM) as well as the meteorological data provided by Eddy Covariance (EC) system (GPPEC), for the period from August to November 2015. Results revealed that the cumulative GPPEC for the entire growth period of maize crop was 1871 g C m−2. However, the cumulative GPP determined as a function of the enhanced vegetation index – EVI (GPPEVI) was 1979 g C m−2, and that determined as a function of the normalized difference vegetation index – NDVI (GPPNDVI) was 1754 g C m−2. These results indicated that the GPPEVI was significantly higher than the GPPEC (R2 = 0.96, P = 0.0241 and RMSE = 12.6%). While, the GPPNDVI was significantly lower than the GPPEC (R2 = 0.93, P = 0.0384 and RMSE = 19.7%). However, the recorded relative error between the GPPEC and both the GPPEVI and the GPPNDVI was −6.22% and 5.76%, respectively. These results demonstrated the potential of the landsat-8 driven VPM model for the estimation of GPP, which is relevant to the productivity and carbon fluxes.  相似文献

Purpose(1) Evaluate the reproducibility of segmentation methods depending on the preselection region for tumour volume determination on 18F-fluoro-ethyl-tyrosine (FET) PET. (2) Evaluate the intra and inter-operator reproducibility of the manual delineation. (3) Compare this delineation with the segmentation methods.Materials and methodsEighteen FET PET of patients with glioblastoma were analysed. Preselection regions were determined prior to any segmentation. Two physicians delineated the tumour volume manually. The tumour volume was also delineated with a threshold method (40 and 70% of SUVmax), and a random walk based method. Pearson coefficient (r) (P < 0.05 for r > 0.468) and Jaccard indices (JI) were used to compare the volumes.ResultsManual delineation was reproducible with r = 0.97 and IJ = 0.65 for intra-operator, and r = 0.76 and IJ = 0.45 for inter-operator reproducibility. The preselection regions for a given lesion were different and the segmentation varied with the preselection region: r = 0.55 JI = 0.58; r = 0.85 JI = 0.83; r = 0.70 JI = 0.39 respectively for the threshold of 40%, 70% and the random walk. The segmentation differed form de manual delineation with r = 0.37 and JI = 0.16; r = 0.54 and JI = 0.42; r = 0.43 and JI = 0.37 respectively for the threshold of 40%, 70% and the random walk.ConclusionThe reproducibility of the segmentation methods depends extensively on the preselection region. The intra-operator reproducibility of cerebral lesion delineation on FET PET is satisfactory. The inter-operator reproducibility could be improved.  相似文献

Trabecular bone is viscoelastic under dynamic loading. However, it is unclear how tissue viscoelasticity controls viscoelasticity at the apparent-level. In this study, viscoelasticity of cylindrical human trabecular bone samples (n = 11, male, age 18–78 years) from 11 proximal femurs were characterized using dynamic and stress-relaxation testing at the apparent-level and with creep nanoindentation at the tissue-level. In addition, bone tissue elasticity was determined using scanning acoustic microscope (SAM). Tissue composition and collagen crosslinks were assessed using Raman micro-spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. Values of material parameters were obtained from finite element (FE) models by optimizing tissue-level creep and apparent-level stress-relaxation to experimental nanoindentation and unconfined compression testing values, respectively, utilizing the second order Prony series to depict viscoelasticity. FE simulations showed that tissue-level equilibrium elastic modulus (Eeq) increased with increasing crystallinity (r = 0.730, p = .011) while at the apparent-level it increased with increasing hydroxylysyl pyridinoline content (r = 0.718, p = .019). In addition, the normalized shear modulus g1 (r = −0.780, p = .005) decreased with increasing collagen ratio (amide III/CH2) at the tissue-level, but increased (r = 0.696, p = .025) with increasing collagen ratio at the apparent-level. No significant relations were found between the measured or simulated viscoelastic parameters at the tissue- and apparent-levels nor were the parameters related to tissue elasticity determined with SAM. However, only Eeq, g2 and relaxation time τ1 from simulated viscoelastic values were statistically different between tissue- and apparent-levels (p < .01). These findings indicate that bone tissue viscoelasticity is affected by tissue composition but may not fully predict the macroscale viscoelasticity in human trabecular bone.  相似文献

Assessing the spatial variability of ecosystem structure and functioning is an important step towards developing monitoring systems to detect changes in ecosystem attributes that could be linked to desertification processes in drylands. Methods based on ground-collected soil and plant indicators are being increasingly used for this aim, but they have limitations regarding the extent of the area that can be measured using them. Approaches based on remote sensing data can successfully assess large areas, but it is largely unknown how the different indices that can be derived from such data relate to ground-based indicators of ecosystem health. We tested whether we can predict ecosystem structure and functioning, as measured with a field methodology based on indicators of ecosystem functioning (the landscape function analysis, LFA), over a large area using spectral vegetation indices (VIs), and evaluated which VIs are the best predictors of these ecosystem attributes. For doing this, we assessed the relationship between vegetation attributes (cover and species richness), LFA indices (stability, infiltration and nutrient cycling) and nine VIs obtained from satellite images of the MODIS sensor in 194 sites located across the Patagonian steppe. We found that NDVI was the VI best predictor of ecosystem attributes. This VI showed a significant positive linear relationship with both vegetation basal cover (R2 = 0.39) and plant species richness (R2 = 0.31). NDVI was also significantly and linearly related to the infiltration and nutrient cycling indices (R2 = 0.36 and 0.49, respectively), but the relationship with the stability index was weak (R2 = 0.13). Our results indicate that VIs obtained from MODIS, and NDVI in particular, are a suitable tool for estimate the spatial variability of functional and structural ecosystem attributes in the Patagonian steppe at the regional scale.  相似文献

Barrier islands shrub thickets, the dominant woody community of many Atlantic coast barrier islands, are very sensitive to changes in the freshwater lens and thus, constitute a strong indicator of summer drought. NDVI was computed from airborne images and multispectral images on Hog Island (VA, USA) to evaluate summer growing season changes in woody communities for better predictions of climate change effects. Patterns of NDVI were compared year to year and monthly relative to precipitation and water table depth at the appropriate temporal scale. The highest absolute values of NDVI as well as the larger surface covered by woody vegetation (NDVI > 0.5) occurred in the wet year (2004) with a bimodal distribution of NDVI values (around 0.65 and 0.9) while both dry years (2007 and 2008) showed similar values in maximum, mean and standard deviation and unimodal distributions (around 0.75) of NDVI values. Positive linear adjustments were obtained between maximum (r2 > 0.9) and mean NDVI (r2 > 0.87) and the accumulated rainfall in the hydrological year and the mean water table depth from the last rainfall event till the date of the image acquisition. The spatial variations revealed that water table depth behaved different in wet and dry years. In dry years there was a remarkable increase in mean and maximum values linearly related to water table depth. The highest slope of the adjustment in 2007 indicated a sharp response of vegetation in the driest year. Monthly series of NDVI showed the major role of lack of precipitation through July and August in 2007 with missing classes of NDVI above 0.8 and unimodal distributions in mid-late summer. Best linear fits (r2 close to 1) were obtained with rainfall at different temporal scales: accumulated rainfall in the hydrological year 2004 and accumulated rainfall in the last month previous to the date of 2007 image. Thus, in dry years productivity is closely related to water available from recent past as opposed to over the year for wet years. Good fits (r2 values higher than 0.88) were obtained between monthly decrease in water table depth and NDVI variables just in the dry year. These results demonstrate the important feedback between woody vegetation response to changes in the freshwater lens using empirical data and could apply to other systems with strong directional gradients in resources.  相似文献

We present a network of thirteen annual ring-width chronologies from high elevation whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis Engelm.) sites in the western Canadian Cordillera in order to assess the dendroclimatic potential of this long-lived tree species. The temperature signal within the chronologies is complex and strongly influenced by diverging trends in the summer temperature and ring-width records from across the region. A first differences transformation of the tree-ring and temperature records illustrates a loss of frequency coherence in growth response to summer temperatures following reduced radial growth in the 1950s. Prior to reduced growth, we note a positive association with summer temperatures for both first differenced (rd = 0.60) and traditional (r = 0.50) records. Following reduced growth, the association at first differences is maintained (rd = 0.49) whereas there is a change in the lower frequency component of tree growth response to summer temperatures (r = ?0.34). We suggest the cause of this reduced temperature sensitivity is related to the interaction between diurnal temperature and cloud cover patterns, the hydrological regime of snowpack, and site conditions which have been amenable to the initiation of moisture stress during the latter half of the 20th century. Reduced radial growth is coincident with the arrival of white pine blister rust (Cronatium ribicola J.C. Fisch. ex Raben) into the study region which suggests this infestation may be related to the observed reduction in radial growth. Whitebark pine has considerable potential for the field of dendroclimatology. Unfortunately, the decline of the species due to the combined effects of climate change, white pine blister rust, mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopk.), and forest fire exclusion practices indicate this potential may remain unfulfilled.  相似文献

Recent evidences suggested a possible relationship between zinc deficiency and leptin levels in pathogenesis of anorexia in chronic kidney disease. The present study addressed the relationship between zinc and leptin in hemodialysis (HD) patients.MethodsFifty HD patients (54.3 ± 12.7 years old, 62% men) were studied and compared to 21 healthy volunteers (50.7 ± 15.7 years old, 43% men). Biochemical data, serum zinc, plasma leptin, IL-6, TNF-α and C-Reactive Protein levels were determined. Anthropometric parameters, food intake and appetite score were also assessed.ResultsThe leptin levels were higher in HD patients (16.1 μg/mL (0.21–118.25) vs 6.0 μg/mL (0.50–23.10)) in healthy volunteers (p = 0.04), whereas serum zinc levels were lower (54.5 ± 16.3 μg/dL) compared to healthy volunteers (78.4 ± 9.4 μg/dL) (p = 0.0001). The plasma leptin was correlated negatively with plasma zinc (r = ?0.33; p = 0.007), energy (r = ?0.38; p = 0.002) and protein intake (r = ?0.34; p = 0.006) and, positively correlated with BMI (r = 0.54; p = 0.0001), % body fat (r = 0.70; p = 0.0001) and conicity index (r = 0.46; p = 0.001). Plasma zinc was associated with hemoglobin (r = 0.30; p = 0.04) and negatively associated with TNF-α (r = ?0.37; p = 0.002) and C-Reactive Protein (r = ?0.37; p = 0.004). There was no correlation among Zn, leptin and appetite score in these patients.ConclusionThis study showed that low plasma zinc levels are negatively associated with high leptin levels in HD patients.  相似文献

Introduction: Obesity is a well-established risk factor for postmenopausal breast cancer, but mechanisms underlying the association are unclear. Adipocyte-derived, cytokine-like adipokines have been suggested as contributory factors. To evaluate their association with breast cancer risk factors and breast cancer risk, we conducted a nested case-control study of 234 postmenopausal breast cancer cases and 234 controls in a cohort of U.S. women with prospectively-collected serum samples obtained in the mid 1970s and followed for up to 25 years. Methods: Adiponectin, absolute plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (aPAI-1), and resistin were measured by a multiplex immunoassay. Sex hormones were available for 67 cases and 67 controls. Results: Among controls, we found that lower levels of adiponectin and higher levels of aPAI-1 were correlated with increasing levels of estradiol (Spearman r = ?0.26, p-value = 0.033; r = 0.42, p = 0.0003), decreasing levels of sex hormone binding globulin (r = 0.38, p = 0.0013; r = ?0.32, p = 0.0076), and increasing body mass index (BMI) (r = ?0.31, p =  < 0.0001; r = 0.39, p =  < 0.0001). Hormones were not associated with resistin. Among the relatively small percentage of women using postmenopausal hormones at the time of blood collection (13.7%), aPAI-1 levels were higher than in non-users (p = 0.0054). Breast cancer risk was not associated with circulating levels of adiponectin (age-adjusted p for linear trend = 0.43), aPAI-1 (p = 0.78), or resistin (p = 0.91). The association was not confounded by BMI, parity, age at first full-term birth, age at menopause, current postmenopausal hormone use, and circulating sex steroid hormones. Furthermore, adipokine associations were not modified by BMI (p > 0.05). The lack of association with risk may be due to measurement error of the laboratory assays. Discussion: lower levels of adiponectin and higher levels of aPAI-1 measured in prospectively-collected serum from postmenopausal women were associated with increasing BMI but not breast cancer risk.  相似文献

Benthic, epiphytic, and phytoplanktonic diatoms, as well as soil and water physical–chemical parameters, were sampled from 70 small (average 0.86 ha) isolated depressional herbaceous wetlands located along a gradient of human disturbance in peninsular Florida to (1) compare diatom assemblage structure between algal types; (2) develop biological indicators of wetland condition; (3) examine synecological relationships between diatom structure and environmental variables, with the ultimate goal of developing an index of biological integrity using a single assemblage. Collected diatom samples were enumerated to 250 valves and identified to species or subspecies. An assessment of wetland condition was made using a landscape-scale human disturbance score (Landscape Development Intensity index, LDI), calculated for each site using land use maps and GIS.Assemblages from both impaired and reference sites were compared using blocked multi-response permutation procedures, the percent similarity index, and visually examined using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). No ecologically significant compositional differences were found within sites. Mantel's test (Mantel's r = 0.29, p < 0.0001) and NMDS (stress: 14.52, variance: 78.5%) identified epiphytic diatoms as the most responsive to human disturbance. Strong significant correlations (|rs| > 0.50, p < 0.05) were found between epiphytic NMDS site scores and soil pH, specific conductivity, water total phosphorous, and LDI, while soil pH, water color, soil TP, and turbidity were also significantly correlated (p < 0.05).Metrics to assess wetland condition were developed using epiphytic abundance data. Epiphytic taxa sensitive or tolerant to human landscape modification were identified using Indicator Species Analysis, and autecological indices relating diatom sensitivity to nutrients, pH, dissolved oxygen levels, saprobity, salinity, and trophic status were calculated. Fourteen final metrics were identified, scored on an ordinal scale, and combined into the Diatom Index of Wetland Condition (DIWC). The DIWC was highly correlated with the disturbance score (Spearman's rs = −0.71, p < 0.0001), although the results need to be validated.  相似文献

In this study, biological samples (slaughterhouse material) were collected from 30 sheep and 36 goats and classified according to gestational stage into either early or late gestation. Samples consisted of allantoic fluid, amniotic fluid, fetal liver, fetal kidney, fetal thyroid gland, maternal plasma and liver to determine selenium (Se) concentrations throughout gestation. The Se concentrations in the allantoic fluid, fetal liver and kidney increased significantly (p < 0.01) during late gestation. Concurrently, the Se concentrations in amniotic fluid, maternal plasma and liver decreased significantly (p < 0.01) over time. Significant (p < 0.01) positive relationships were recorded between the age of the fetus and Se concentrations in the allantoic fluid (r = 0.57–0.75), fetal liver (r = 0.43–0.59) and kidney (r = 0.80–0.81) in both sheep and goats. A significant (p < 0.05) positive relationships were also recorded between the Se concentrations in the allantoic fluid and fetal liver (r = 0.35–0.37), the maternal plasma and liver Se concentrations (r = 0.37–0.57) between sheep and goats. A significant (p < 0.05) negative correlation was recorded between the Se concentrations in the allantoic fluid with maternal plasma of sheep (r = −0.41) as well as between the fetal liver and maternal liver Se (r = −0.22 to 0.50) and a negative correlation (r = −0.42 to 0.43) (p < 0.01) between Se concentrations in the fetal liver and amniotic fluid in both sheep and goats, respectively. Se concentration in the fetal liver was significantly (p < 0.01) higher than that of the kidney and thyroid. In the thyroid gland no morphological differences were noted. Strong fetal–maternal relationships in Se concentration were evident throughout the gestational period and dams seem to sacrifice Se levels in order to maintain that in the fetus. Se concentrations in the amniotic and allantoic fluids could be used as a possible indicator of the Se status of the fetus throughout gestation.  相似文献

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by recurrent apnea during sleep that may unbalance oxidative stress, increasing atherosclerosis. Among oxidative stress markers, 15-F2t-isoprostane is considered one of the most sensitive and specific metabolites of lipid peroxidation. To explore the relationship between urinary 15-F2t-isoprostane with sleep apnea severity and carotid modifications in nonobese OSA patients, 31 nonobese sleep apnea patients were studied, along with 10 lean subjects without OSA. Patients were assessed by polysomnography, blood pressure measurement, and ultrasonography to determine the carotid intima–media thickness (IMT). Urinary 15-F2t-isoprostanes were measured by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Urinary 15-F2t-isoprostane concentrations were increased in severe OSA patients compared to control subjects (20.2 ± 7.3 vs 12.3 ± 2.8 ng/mmol creatinine; P = 0.020). Mean carotid IMT was correlated with 15-F2t-isoprostane (r = 0.532; P < 0.001) and with the apnea–hypopnea index (r = 0.345; P = 0.029). 15-F2t-Isoprostane level was related to the night time spent at SaO2 < 90% (r = 0.478; P = 0.002), the apnea–hypopnea index (r = 0.465; P = 0.003), and the mean nocturnal SaO2 (r = ? 0.424; P = 0.007). These results showed a relationship between lipid peroxidation, carotid intima–media thickness, and intermittent hypoxia in nonobese OSA patients, thus reinforcing the hypothesis that oxidative stress could be involved in the early atherosclerotic process.  相似文献

Thirty-three Holstein-Friesian cows were followed from 14 days pre partum until the fourth ovulation post partum. Housing conditions and basic ration were identical for all animals. Concentrates were individually supplemented according to the daily milk production level, using two different types of protein rich concentrates: soybean meal and rapeseed meal. Soybean and rapeseed meal are known to be respectively high and low in isoflavones. Cows were randomly divided into three groups and blocked for parity. Group I (n = 11) was supplemented with soybean meal and acted as control group. Groups II (n = 11) and III (n = 11) were respectively supplemented with soybean and rapeseed meal and were subjected to a biopsy sampling of the corpus luteum at day 9 of the first three postpartal estrous cycles.Soybean meal supplementation to lactating dairy cows (1.72 kg on average) induced an increase in the blood concentration of equol, dihydrodaidzein, o-desmethylangolensin in both soy groups and resulted in a reduced area occupied by steroidogenic (P = 0.012) and endothelial cells (P = 0.0007) in the luteal biopsies. Blood concentrations of equol and glycitein were negatively correlated with the areas occupied by steroidogenic (r = −0.410 with P = 0.0002, respectively r = −0.351 with P = 0.008) and endothelial cells (r = −0.337 with P = 0.01, respectively r = −0.233 with P = 0.085) in the 3 first estrous cycles. The latter however did not affect the diestrous peripheral blood progesterone concentration.  相似文献
