Conception et suites de la Paléontologie française d’Alcide d’Orbigny

The whole formed by his Paléontologie française, his Prodrome, and his Cours élémentaire, which are closely linked, constitutes one of the major parts of Alcide d’Orbigny’s scientific production, in which he exposed his concept of Palaeontology as a science closely related with Zoology and as an indispensable tool for Stratigraphy. The result was a remarkable impulsion for palaeontological and stratigraphical research, which from that time developed on new scientific foundations. Two annexes complete this communication, the first concerning the ‘Comité de la Paléontologie française’ (1860–1893), the second specifying the publication dates of four volumes of the Paléontologie française.     

Scintigraphie osseuse et déficit en IGF1 : présentation d’un cas clinique

Growth delay in adults with GH (growth hormone) or insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) deficiency is often associated to low bone mineral density (BMD), osteoporosis and a higher risk of fractures (Tritos et al., 2011 [1]; Wüster et al., 2001 [2]; Bex et Bouillon, 2003 [3]). However to date, the risk of fractures in children with GH or IGF1 deficiency is not clearly evaluated (Högler and Shaw, 2010 [4]). This is the case of a young woman aged 21, with a syndrome including a severe mental, growth and weight retardation (–4 SD), facial dysmorphism and partial epilepsy, who recently presented walking and muscle strength loss, without history of trauma. Bone scan revealed several hot spots related to cortical bone fractures and biological data showed an IGF1 deficiency. Through this case, we discuss the role played by GH and IGF1 in bone growth, and the basic procedures to follow in children when measuring BMD with dual absorptiometry X ray technique (DXA).     

Intérêt de la TEP-FDG dans le syndrome d’hyper-IgG4 : à propos d’un cas et revue de la littérature

Hyper-IgG4 syndrome, or IgG4-related systemic disease (IgG4-RSD), is a recently described entity of fibro-inflammatory systemic damage. Multiorgan lesions can occur synchronously or metachronously in a same patient. The common histological features include a lymphoplasmacytic infiltration (especially to IgG4), and fibrosis. Elevated serum level of IgG4 is also often present. The main concerned organs are: pancreas, biliary ducts, mediastinal lymph nodes, peritoneum, lacrimal and salivary glands. We report a case of an unusual location of this disease at the nasophyrnx in a patient of 84 years for which the diagnosis was made through immunolabelling with IgG4 in lesions biopsied, and we illustrate the potential role of PET-FDG in this systemic disease.     

Le « créationnisme » d’Alcide d’Orbigny et les fondements de la théorie biostratigraphique

D’Orbigny was more interested in the discontinuities of life history than in the origin of species. He looked for reference points to correlate geological strata and to reconstruct their history. This allowed him to formalise the concept of stratigraphic stage and to propose the first geological time scale. Therefore, one of the results was that he was unjustly considered as one of the leaders of the creationism school, because he used the ambiguous term ‘creation’ to designate the renewal of fauna after catastrophic events, but without providing a definition and with a meaning that was probably different from those of his successors.     

Zonage radiologique d’un service de médecine nucléaire : exemple de l’hôpital d’instruction des armées Sainte-Anne

According to the ministerial order of May 15th, 2006 (transposition of the EURATOM directive 96/29 from May 13th, 1996), each person in charge of a medical institution is compelled to classify the working areas dealing with sources of ionizing radiation. The approach to the delineation of radiological areas should appear in an internal document combining the analysis of heath risks. Without waiting for the publication of the official guidelines as announced in the notice DGT/ASN no. 1 of January 18th, 2008 and in accordance with the above mentioned order, we have already formalized the different steps towards a zoning in the new nuclear medicine department in the Military Hospital Ste Anne of Toulon by using a detailed methodology to measure exposition and contamination levels. The methodology is largely based on measurements and consideration of normal envelopes. Analysis of integrated doses over an hour in a room can ultimately determine radiological areas. We apply the new recommended values to define the different classified zones according to their specificity and discuss this new way of assessment of exposure risks as well as the consequences on the different staff categories concerned.     

Gentelles-Le Mont de l’Evangile (département de la Somme,France) : un site de plateau occupé de l’Acheuléen au Micoquien

The palaeolithic site of Gentelles (Somme, France) is situated on a chalky plateau unlike most Lower and Middle Palaeolithic sites of the Somme basin, which are related to fluvial environments (alluvial and slope deposits). The archaeological material of the site excavated at Gentelles on several thousand square meters is recovered from the infilling of a dolina. The archaeological sequence is attributed to Late Middle and Upper Pleistocene (MIS 10 to MIS 5). The assignment of the loess infilling the dolina to MIS 6 is supported by ESR/U-Th dates obtained on teeth and the IRSL age of the sediment. All lithic assemblages include bifacial production and debitage with cores showing one or several surfaces of debitage. There is no evidence of Levallois flaking methods, which are very common in many Middle Palaeolithic industries of Northern France. The first steps of the reducing sequences are not present in most lithic assemblages. Some faunal remains (equids, bovids) have been discovered in the loess deposits. In most cases, the function of the site corresponds to short occupations of hunters moving on the plateau. In contrast, the CLG assemblage (MIS 8) which shows many phases of the reducing sequence suggests longer occupations.     

Baïraki – un site du Paléolithique inférieur sur le territoire de la Plaine d’Europe orientale

The paper presents the preliminary results of five years’ multidisciplinary researches (2010–2014 years) of the new Lower Palaeolithic Bayraki site, situated in the vicinity of Dubossary town in Moldavia, on the high terrace (VII) of the Dniester River. In the Lower and Middle Pleistocene deposits are discovered six layers including lithic artefacts of Lower Palaeolithic character. Two layers (I and II) relate to deposits dated by the Brunhes period and four layers (III, IV, V and VI) are attributed to the Matuyama period. The highest number of artefacts (884 objects) is issue from the layer V (the Jaramillo period), whose lithic industry has an Oldowan character. In other layers are found few flint archaeological objects and sporadic fragments of indeterminable bones. In the layer III is found a fossil horse mandibular (Equus sussenbornensis). At present, this site presents the oldest Low Pleistocene across all East European Plain.     

Ostéite tuberculeuse de l’os frontal simulant une métastase lytique d’un carcinome papillaire de la thyroïde : à propos d’un cas

The authors report a case of patient followed for papillary thyroid carcinoma with osteolytic calvarial image at left frontal bone. Bone metastasis of thyroid carcinoma is suspected in the first. Histopathological examination of the material of craniotomy revealed granulomatous lesion in favour of tuberculous osteitis. Such an association is exceptional and only histology allows a definitive diagnosis.     

Le débitage Levallois du site d’Amane Oukider (Sud-Est du Maroc) : analyse technologique d’un assemblage standardisé

The Amane Oukider site (Tinghir, Anti-Atlas) was discovered by an Italo-Moroccan field crew during an archeological mapping project in South-East Morocco. It is an open-air site located near a outcrop of raw materials composed of dolerite. The only debitage method in evidence is the Levallois (lineal and recurrent centripetal) method; the plein débitage products were systematically exported from the site. The Levallois preferential flakes are characterized by a very high level of standardization and they were probably used as blanks for cleaver production.     

L’évaluation de l’industrie bifaciale chinoise d’un point de vue global

If Acheulean industry exists in China is a controversial issue for a long time. After the 1980, accompanying more surveys and excavations engaged in the Paleolithic Archaeology and more and more communication with western academic circles, Chinese researchers participate in the discussion and inquiry on Acheulean actively. This paper attempts to study the bifacial industry in China in global perspective by the theory of relativity between universality and particularity. We try to gather more sites, which are similar to those in China, and review the Acheulean assemblages in China by intersite comparisons.     

Apport de la tomoscintigraphie au technétium 99 m dans le diagnostic des duplications gastriques de l’enfant : à propos d’un cas

Gastric duplications (GD) are rare congenital digestive malformations of the child. Their diagnosis often involves multiple medical imaging modalities ranging from ultrasound to CT or MRI. Scintigraphy is an excellent diagnostic method rarely used especially when the discovery mode of GD is not associated with gastro-intestinal bleeding. We report a case of a non-communicating and non-hemorrhagic GD discovered in a 6-year-old girl whose exploration has benefited many ways including SPECT imaging after intravenous injection of Tc-99 m pertechnetate. Our goal is to focus on the role of scintigraphy in the diagnostic management of the DG of the child and to discuss the opportunity of the other imaging techniques in the exploration of this pathology.
