The present study examined a costly signaling model of human apology. The model assumes that an unintentional transgressor is more motivated to restore the relationship with the victim than an intentional transgressor who depreciates the relationship. The model predicts the existence of a separating equilibrium, in which only sincere apologizers will pay a certain cost to restore the relationship, while dishonest apologizers will not. Accordingly, we hypothesized that the receivers of an apology would be sensitive to the cost involved in the apology. 2 Experiment 1, 3 Experiment 2 were vignette experiments, in which participants imagined that they were victims of an interpersonal transgression and received either a costly or no-cost apology. The costliness of the apology was manipulated by the presence of an apology gift in Experiment 1, and by inconvenience voluntarily experienced by the transgressor to make an apology in Experiment 2. In both experiments, participants found the costly apologizer to be more sincere than the no-cost apologizer. Experiment 3 employed a modified dictator game, in which a fictitious partner behaved in an unfair manner and apologized to the participants. The apology cost was manipulated as a fee for sending the apology message. The results of 2 Experiment 1, 3 Experiment 2 were replicated. In addition, when given a chance to send a complaint message to the unfair person, participants in the costly apology condition abstained from doing so. Implications of the study are discussed in relation to applications of the costly signaling theory to interpersonal behavior.  相似文献

Researchers at the Institute of Medicine have reported a staggering number of medical errors, that is, adverse effects as a result of treatment, in healthcare in America. This article argues against a no-faults systems view as a corrective for these events and calls us instead to trust the motivations of providers and the peer review process to bring about the needed cultural revolution. Philosophers intent upon characterizing the difference between physics and biology often seize upon the purported fact that physical explanations conform more closely to the covering law model than biological explanations. Central to this purported difference is the role of laws of nature in the explanations of these two sciences. However, I argue that, although certain important differences between physics and biology can be highlighted by differences between physical and biological explanations, these differences are not differences in the degree to which those explanations conform to the covering law model, which fits biology about as well as it does physics.  相似文献

It is commonly agreed in the literature on laws of nature that there are at least two necessary conditions for lawhood--that a law must have empirical content and that it must be universal. The main reason offered for the requirement that laws be empirical is as follows: a priori statements are consistent with any imaginable set of observations, so they cannot be informative about the world and therefore they cannot provide explanations. However, we care about laws because we think that laws provide explanations and allow us to make predictions. Thus, if one of the functions of laws is to provide explanations and a priori propositions cannot fulfill this function, they cannot properly be viewed as laws. In this paper, I will aim to show that this argument for the claim that laws must be empirical does not work.  相似文献

Genetic testing of genes that encode proteins expressed by liver hepatocytes (clotting factors, alpha 1-antitrypsin, cytochrome P450 enzymes) is common in clinical practice. These tests use DNA extracted from peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) and are based on the assumption that PBL DNA can be used as a surrogate for hepatocyte DNA. However, in individuals who have undergone liver transplantation, hepatocyte DNA is that of the donor while PBL DNA remains that of the recipient. It follows that in liver transplant patients, genetic testing of the recipient's PBL DNA does not provide accurate results for proteins expressed by donor hepatocytes. Therefore, genetic testing of clotting factors, alpha 1-1-antitrypsin, cytochrome P450 enzymes, and other proteins expressed by hepatocytes is unreliable and inappropriate in liver transplant patients (inappropriate genetic testing). A review of the records of 215 consecutive liver transplant patients at our institution identified: one medical error and one near-miss medical error related to inappropriate genetic testing, 14 cases of inappropriate genetic testing, and 21 unnecessary duplicate genetic testing requests. We recommend laboratories performing genetic testing create systems to prevent inappropriate and duplicate genetic testing and that physicians be cognizant of the appropriate indications for genetic testing in liver transplant patients.  相似文献

Recently, behaviors that seem to function as punishment or apology have been reported among non-human primates as well as humans. Such behaviors appear to play an important role in maintaining cooperation between individuals. Therefore, the evolution of these behaviors should be examined from the viewpoint of the evolution of cooperation. The iterated prisoner's dilemma (IPD) game is generally considered to be a standard model for the evolution of cooperation. In the present study, strategies accompanied by punishment-like attacks or apology-like behavior were introduced into the common IPD simulation. Punishment and apology were represented by the P signal and the AS signal given immediately after defection. A strategy with the P and AS signals, named the pPAS strategy, was proved to be an evolutionarily stable strategy under certain conditions. Numerical simulations were carried out according to different assigned values of the costs of punishment and apology. The simulations showed that pPAS could dominate the population (1) when the cost of giving P is relatively small, (2) when the cost of receiving P is relatively large, or (3) when the cost of giving AS is relatively large. The relative cost of giving AS had the clearest effect on the success of pPAS. pPAS can dominate the population even when a dominance asymmetry of the costs between two players was introduced. The present results suggest the possible evolution of social behaviors like punishment or apology as a means of maintaining cooperation. Screening for cervical carcinoma by cervicovaginal cytology has led to a marked reduction in the incidence of and mortality from this tumor over the last 50 years in essentially all countries with a functioning screening program. It is the most successful cancer prevention program of all times. Consequently, approximately 80% of the current incidence of and mortality from this disease occurs in geographic areas of underserved and underscreened women. Essential components of a successful program are a high coverage rate of the female population, screening at regular intervals, well-trained clinical and laboratory staff, and an efficient follow-up and treatment system. Deficiencies in any of these areas may lead to a failing screening system. Thus, the most important reason for the remaining mortality from cervical carcinoma in developed countries is lack of complete coverage. It is questionable if new and more expensive technologies will be able to renmedy the remaining failures of the system if no improvement in the coverage rate is achieved. Screening errors do occur but represent only a small fraction of screening failures. Currently, there are a number of terminology systems around the world; thus, a unified terminology is currently not a realistic goal.  相似文献

Although genotyping errors affect most data and can markedly influence the biological conclusions of a study, they are too often neglected. Errors have various causes, but their occurrence and effect can be limited by considering these causes in the production and analysis of the data. Procedures that have been developed for dealing with errors in linkage studies, forensic analyses and non-invasive genotyping should be applied more broadly to any genetic study. We propose a protocol for estimating error rates and recommend that these measures be systemically reported to attest the reliability of published genotyping studies.  相似文献

A number of investigators have invoked a cascading local interaction model to account for power‐law‐distributed fluctuations in ecological variables. Invoking such a model requires that species be tightly coupled, and that local interactions among species influence ecosystem dynamics over a broad range of scales. Here we reanalyse bird population data used by Keitt & Stanley (1998, Dynamics of North American breeding bird populations. Nature, 393, 257–260) to support a cascading local interaction model. We find that the power law they report can be attributed to mixing of lognormal distributions. More tentatively, we propose that mixing of distributions accounts for other empirical power laws reported in the ecological literature.  相似文献

We report some novel 'lighting' and 'backlighting' effects in plane figures similar to those which induce the 'watercolor illusion', that is, figures made with outlines composed of juxtaposed parallel lines varying in brightness and chromatic color. These new effects show 'illumination' as an emergent percept, and show how arrangements of 'dark and light' along the boundaries of various plane figures model the volume and strengthen the illusion of depth. To account for these various effects we propose several phenomenological 'laws of figurality' to add to the Gestalt laws of organization and figure-ground segregation. We offer a set of meta-laws which are speculative but which serve to integrate and organize the phenomenological laws. These laws indicate how luminance gradient profiles across boundary contours define both the 3D appearance of figures and the properties of the light reflected from their volumetric shapes.  相似文献
