The rich biodiversity of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi is subject to a high rate of deforestation and other pressures. Its plight is symbolized by the deteriorating conservation status of the maleo, an iconic galliform bird that is both striking in appearance and intimately bound up with local traditions. After a series of international-led projects during the 1980s and early 1990s conservation efforts petered out until recently when there has been an upsurge in local-led concern and action. To capitalize on this a workshop was held in 2010 to share local perceptions, lessons and concerns about the species and these conservation efforts. The workshop was dominated by members of local communities and their elected or traditional representatives, although there was also a wide variety of other stakeholders present, including from national species conservation and local government agencies. Whilst there is a need for more information to underpin the actions necessary to ensure the survival of this species, the overwhelming perception of participants was that continued decentralization of policy making and budgetary responsibility would enhance the conservation efforts for this species (and other elements of biodiversity) considerably. This would allow the upsurge in locally-led conservation activities to be continued and expanded.  相似文献

We present comments on an article recently published in Ecology and Evolution (“High‐resolution melting of the cytochrome B gene in fecal DNA: A powerful approach for fox species identification of the Lycalopex genus in Chile”) by Anabalon et al. that reported the presence of Darwin's fox (Lycalopex fulvipes), a temperate forest specialist, in the hyperarid Atacama Desert of northern Chile. We argue that this putative record lacks ecological support in light of ongoing research on this endangered species, and contains numerous methodological flaws and omissions related to the molecular identification of the species. Based on these issues, we suggest the scientific community and conservation decision‐makers disregard the alleged presence of the Darwin's fox in the Atacama Desert.  相似文献

Southeast Asia is a critical area for biodiversity conservation; levels of species richness and endemism are among the highest in the world, but rapid land-use changes endanger much of the region’s fauna. Bats are a critical component of this diversity, comprising nearly a third of Southeast Asia’s mammal species and providing vital ecological and economic services. However, nearly half the species are of conservation concern and as many as 40% of bat species are predicted to be extinct by the end of this century if current deforestation rates persist. Conservation efforts are urgently needed, and the taxonomic continuity of Southeast Asia and the prevalence of major threats throughout suggest that a region-wide initiative could be an effective approach. The Southeast Asian Bat Conservation Research Unit (SEABCRU) was established in 2007 to provide an organizational framework to both accelerate the advancement of bat research, and to coordinate conservation efforts. The SEABCRU is an informal collaboration among institutes, NGOs and individuals and provides a web-based forum for the growing number of researchers and outreach workers to interact and coordinate activities. It was launched at the 1st International Southeast Asian Bat Conference in Thailand (May 2007), during which a forum was held to derive conservation research priorities using a consensus approach. Four priorities were identified by participants: flying fox conservation and monitoring, taxonomy, conservation of cave-dependent bats, and conservation of forest-dependent bats. Here I provide an overview of the rationales behind these priorities and list the specific recommendations for the actions identified.  相似文献

Biodiversity is under threat worldwide. Over the past decade, the field of population genomics has developed across nonmodel organisms, and the results of this research have begun to be applied in conservation and management of wildlife species. Genomics tools can provide precise estimates of basic features of wildlife populations, such as effective population size, inbreeding, demographic history and population structure, that are critical for conservation efforts. Moreover, population genomics studies can identify particular genetic loci and variants responsible for inbreeding depression or adaptation to changing environments, allowing for conservation efforts to estimate the capacity of populations to evolve and adapt in response to environmental change and to manage for adaptive variation. While connections from basic research to applied wildlife conservation have been slow to develop, these connections are increasingly strengthening. Here we review the primary areas in which population genomics approaches can be applied to wildlife conservation and management, highlight examples of how they have been used, and provide recommendations for building on the progress that has been made in this field.  相似文献

Parrot conservation and ecotourism in the Windward Islands   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The genus Amazona is represented on three islands in the Windward Islands. Since Europeans first visited the region in the fifteenth century, at least three parrot species have become extinct in the Windward Islands, and today all the extant parrots of the region are endangered. Several factors have contributed to the current plight of the parrots. The authorities in each of the islands of the Windward Islands that have endemic parrots have come to the realization that sound environmental management measures can complement rather than hinder national socioeconomic goals and objectives. Consequently, regional governments have begun to explore and foster linkages between conservation and other sectors of the economy. This article examines current parrot conservation efforts in the Windward Islands and the linkages which are being fostered between tourism and other sectors of the economy. Policy and research implications of the region's current parrot conservation efforts and ecotourism programme are also considered.  相似文献

Long-lived perennials are a species-rich, ecologically important component of the North American deserts, yet we know little about their genetic structure, information important for their conservation. Agave victoriae-reginae is an endemic of the Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico that is endangered by collection for the ornamental trade. We examined levels and patterns of variation at ten polymorphic allozyme loci in ten populations representing the range of the species. Levels of genetic variation (mean He= 0.335) and differentiation (mean FST = 0.236) were high. Phenetic clustering suggested the existence of at least three distinct groups of populations. If this pattern of variation is representative of other long-lived desert perennials, it may explain the species richness of this group and will pose a real challenge to gene conservation efforts.  相似文献

Despite early menageries being the source of much useful biological information on anatomy and taxonomy, it is only more recently that the potential for research in zoos has been recongnized. Collections of captive animals are unique and irreplaceable resources for conservation; but without research in zoological parks, progress in conservation science would diminish. There is a flow of information from zoo researchers to field scientists that assists in providing new insights into species biology. Reciprocally, data collected in the field enhance efforts in captive breeding. This paper summarizes the new research initiatives undertaken in zoos, e.g., in the fields of reproductive and genetic technologies, and highlights their significance for conservation and management of threatened species. It is evident that zoo research has a vital role in linking in situ and ex situ conservation. This role needs to be expanded and developed to meet the challenge posed by expanding human and declining wildlife populations and ecosystems.  相似文献

The biodiversity of the 5,000 km-long Great Escarpment of southern Africa is currently poorly known, despite hosting half of the subcontinent’s centres of plant endemism and to have a rich endemic vertebrate fauna, particularly in the north-west and east. A country-based overview of endemism, data deficiencies and conservation challenges is provided, with Angola being the country in most need of Escarpment research and conservation. Given that the Escarpment provides most of the subcontinent’s fresh water, protection and restoration of Escarpment habitat providing such ecological services is urgently required. Key research needs are exhaustive biodiversity surveys, systematic studies to test refugia and migration hypotheses, and the effects of modern climate change. Such research results can then be consolidated into effective conservation planning and co-ordinated international efforts to protect the rich biodiversity of the Escarpment and the ecological services it provides.  相似文献

The conservation of tortoises poses a unique situation because several threatened species are commonly kept as pets within their native ranges. Thus, there is potential for captive populations to be a reservoir for repatriation efforts. We assess the utility of captive populations of the threatened Agassiz’s desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) for recovery efforts based on genetic affinity to local areas. We collected samples from 130 captive desert tortoises from three desert communities: two in California (Ridgecrest and Joshua Tree) and the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center (Las Vegas) in Nevada. We tested all samples for 25 short tandem repeats and sequenced 1,109 bp of the mitochondrial genome. We compared captive genotypes to a database of 1,258 Gopherus samples, including 657 wild caught G. agassizii spanning the full range of the species. We conducted population assignment tests to determine the genetic origins of the captive individuals. For our total sample set, only 44 % of captive individuals were assigned to local populations based on genetic units derived from the reference database. One individual from Joshua Tree, California, was identified as being a Morafka’s desert tortoise, G. morafkai, a cryptic species which is not native to the Mojave Desert. Our data suggest that captive desert tortoises kept within the native range of G. agassizii cannot be presumed to have a genealogical affiliation to wild tortoises in their geographic proximity. Precautions should be taken before considering the release of captive tortoises into the wild as a management tool for recovery.  相似文献

Desert riparian ecosystems are among the most threatened biodiversity hotspots in the United States, and efforts to conserve them have been increasing. In 2010–2011 and 2014–2016, we examined shifts in the distribution, habitat characteristics, diet, nest success, and productivity of the gray hawk (Buteo plagiatus), 25 years after a Riparian National Conservation Area was established along the San Pedro River in Arizona, USA, to determine how the removal of grazing and agriculture may have affected the ecosystem. The gray hawk population increased and expanded from mesquite (Prosopis spp.)-dominated areas that they historically occupied into areas that were dominated by grassland. In contrast with the 1990s, percent of mesquite cover in pairs' territories did not correlate with their productivity. Gray hawk diets also included more mammals in our study period, particularly in territories with more grassland. We propose that conservation measures created habitat for gray hawks in areas that were previously unsuitable by allowing grasslands to regenerate and become habitat for their prey, and that management strategies in the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area could serve as a model for conservation of other desert riparian ecosystems. © 2020 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Protection of natural environments sought through management plans varies greatly between countries; characterizing these differences and what motivates them can inform future regional and international conservation efforts. This research builds on previous work addressing the spatial distribution of marine protected areas in the Mediterranean Sea. Particularly, it examines the relationship between a “protection level” (PL) score and a set of variables pertaining to each country's conservation efforts, economic conditions and human impact along the coast using regression analysis. Four sets of models demonstrated country characteristics that correlate with higher protection levels within marine protected areas (MPAs). Certain contextual factors – economic dependence on the marine environment, efforts at terrestrial conservation and greater human impact – were found to be significantly associated with higher PLs among the northern littoral countries of the Mediterranean. Such findings can inform policy makers about where efforts and investments should be directed for marine conservation.  相似文献

Native vegetation restoration and conservation works have been ongoing for three decades in the South West Slopes Bioregion of NSW's Murray Catchment. Monitoring of extensive areas of protected remnants and revegetation undertaken through a major partnership between ANU researchers and the Murray CMA shows early benefits of restoration efforts to biodiversity and helps to refine future efforts.  相似文献

A number of litigated Australian native title cases concern lands located within the area of Australia known as the Western Desert. In these cases, legal arguments concerning the nature of the land‐owning group and the ‘society’ at the time of colonisation have inevitably drawn on anthropological writings about Western Desert local and social organisation. The impetus for this paper was provided by the Yulara case, a compensation claim over the township of Yulara near Uluru, in which the trial judge concluded that land tenure systems in the Western Desert are based on patrilineal principles. One of the significant factors in the Court's decision was an apparently uncritical acceptance of early anthropological models and data, which had reported supposedly patrilineal socio‐territorial organisation in the Western Desert. Researchers currently working in this region and Indigenous peoples themselves, however, reject this model. In this paper, we question the validity of some of the earlier investigations, and propose an alternative understanding of Western Desert territorial organisation based on data gathered from one of the Pitjantjatjara‐speaking people's neighbouring dialectal groups, which is also consistent with most of the other recent and extensive work done in this cultural bloc.  相似文献

The tropical forests of the Congo Basin and Gulf of Guinea harbor some of the greatest terrestrial and aquatic biological diversity in the world. However, our knowledge of the rich biological diversity of this region and the evolutionary processes that have shaped it remains limited, as is our understanding of the capacity for species to adapt or otherwise respond to current and projected environmental change. In this regard, research efforts are needed to increase current scientific knowledge of this region's biodiversity, identify the drivers of past diversification, evaluate the potential for species to adapt to environmental change and identify key populations for future conservation. Moreover, when evolutionary research is combined with ongoing environmental monitoring efforts, it can also provide an important set of tools for assessing and mitigating the impacts of development activities. Building on a set of recommendations developed at an international workshop held in Gabon in 2011, we highlight major areas for future evolutionary research that could be directly tied to conservation priorities for the region. These research priorities are centered around five disciplinary themes: (1) documenting and discovering biodiversity; (2) identifying drivers of evolutionary diversification; (3) monitoring environmental change; (4) understanding community and ecosystem level processes; (5) investigating the ecology and epidemiology of disease from an evolutionary perspective (evolutionary epidemiology). Furthermore, we also provide an overview of the needs and priorities for biodiversity education and training in Central Africa.  相似文献

The conservation literature provides an important resource for conservation practice and reflects key areas of current research interest, but not necessarily those of highest priority, in the field of conservation science. In one of the most comprehensive studies of its kind, this paper evaluates 4388 articles from three leading conservation journals with different impact factors (Biological Conservation, Conservation Letters, and Oryx) for the period 2010–2019. The analysis shows that previously identified trends still hold true in many instances, including a continuing taxonomic bias towards vertebrates and particularly in favour of mammals. Geographical biases also persist, favouring Europe and North America with respect to where research is undertaken, who writes about it, and how it is funded, although publication of research conducted in Africa is increasing. It is difficult to evaluate changes in author gender outside the decade studied as this topic has not been widely considered in previous studies, but parity in authorship has not yet been achieved in any of the journals examined. To overcome the biases identified, researchers, editors, and funding organisations collectively still need to do more to redirect conservation efforts where they are most urgently needed and encourage more women and more researchers from lower income countries to participate in research by helping to remove the barriers that currently limit them.  相似文献

  • 1 The importance of taxonomy to the determination of conservation priorities and actions is widely accepted. It should be not surprising therefore that the taxonomic treatment of mammal species that have been subject to human actions in antiquity may well influence the contemporary assessment of conservation priorities at various levels.
  • 2 As a result of early extinctions caused by humans and protohistoric and historic introductions, we suggest that the Mediterranean Basin and its islands are particularly prone to misdirection of efforts towards biodiversity conservation.
  • 3 The two main risks associated with the failure to use an evolutionary and palaeoecological approach to conservation efforts are (i) an underestimation of the conservation importance of distinctive continental taxa vs. the apparent endemicity of island taxa; and (ii) a serious risk for native and endemic island species when anthropochorous mammals, especially ungulates, misguidedly become the focus of conservation actions, particularly inside protected areas.
  • 4 Urgent measures, including refinement of mammal taxonomy, the exclusion of known anthropochorous taxa from conservation lists and implementation of protective legislation, are necessary to maintain the uniqueness and richness of the Mediterranean biodiversity hotspot.

The Amazon and Atlantic Forest are considered the world's most biodiverse biomes. Human and climate change impacts are the principal drivers of species loss in both biomes, more severely in the Atlantic Forest. In response to species loss, the main conservation action is the creation of protected areas (PAs). Current knowledge and research on the PA network's conservation efficiency is scarce, and existing studies have mainly considered a past temporal view. In this study, we tested the efficiency of the current PA network to maintain climatically stable areas (CSAs) across the Amazon and Atlantic Forest. To this, we used an ecological niche modeling approach to biome and paleoclimatic simulations. We propose three categories of conservation priority areas for both biomes, considering CSAs, PAs and intact forest remnants. The biomes vary in their respective PA networks' protection efficiency. Regarding protect CSAs, the Amazon PA network is four times more efficient than the Atlantic Forest PA network. New conservation efforts in these two forest biomes require different approaches. We discussed the conservation actions that should be taken in each biome to increase the efficiency of the PA network, considering both the creation and expansion of PAs as well as restoration programs.  相似文献

Conservation status assessments are one of the key scientific measures to inform solutions aiming at minimizing the biodiversity crisis of the Anthropocene, being the IUCN’s Red List approach the most widely used and accepted tool for species-level assessment. However, Red Lists are time-consuming because they necessarily rely on expert evaluation. Thus, the development of automated tools, able to handle the huge increasingly amount of data in less time, are useful for guiding conservation actions. In this sense, the aim of this research is to evaluate an automated preliminary conservation status assessment for all known endemic flora from the megadiverse Brazil. Vascular taxa were derived from the Brazilian Flora 2020 project and occurrences were retrieved from GBIF and SpeciesLink. Data was filtered and then evaluated with the aid of ConR package and high resolution nationwide vegetation maps. The current approach estimates that 28.78 % (22.72–43.75 %) of the endemic flora is threatened by extinction, with different patterns between the six Brazilian ecoregions: from 30.75 % (Amazonia’s lower) to 100 % (Pantanal’s best/upper). The high variation in the estimate is because more than a fifth of the vascular flora is poorly known (<3 records). Accuracy assessment reveals a good agreement between the reference from the Brazilian Flora 2020 project and a binary classification (threatened/not- or near-threatened), with an overall accuracy of 61.67 % (58.84–64.47 %), but with limited capacity to distinguish between the IUCN’s threat levels (Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable to extinction). Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae are the families with higher estimated number, proportion in relation to the whole family and uncertainty of estimated threatened species, reflecting that herb is the life form with far more threatened species, followed by shrubs. The presented approach can serve as rapid assessment tool for optimizing efforts and to identify potentially threatened species and hotspots of species that could be considered for timely and effective conservation actions. As a practical recommendation, botanists could prioritize the assessment of the species indicated here as threatened, as there is a high chance of confirming this status, and efforts can be properly addressed for their conservation. Moreover, the automated approach can be useful for monitoring the progress of conservation targets. Finally, further scientific research is urgent to fill the knowledge gap on the Brazilian flora aiming at its conservation.  相似文献

Aim The Mohave ground squirrel (Xerospermophilus mohavensis) is one of a few endemic species of the Mojave Desert of south‐western North America. We describe phylogeographic patterns within this species and its sister taxon (Xerospermophilus tereticaudus) and test hypotheses concerning their biogeographical history using genetic signatures of stable versus expanding populations. We compare these patterns with those of other Mojave species to evaluate the role of vicariance in producing phylogeographic structure during the assembly of the Mojave Desert biota. Location The Mojave Desert and adjacent desert regions of south‐western North America. Methods Complete cytochrome b gene sequences of X. mohavensis (46 individuals representing 11 localities) and X. tereticaudus (38 individuals representing 14 localities) were analysed using Bayesian methods to infer phylogenetic relationships. Genetic signals of stable or expanding populations were examined based on the distribution of recent mutations and pairwise differences, as well as with a coalescent‐based approach. Results The two species are reciprocally monophyletic and may have diverged in response to the late Pliocene–early Pleistocene uplift of the Transverse Ranges and Mojave block. Little phylogeographic structure is evident within X. mohavensis, but there is a signature of northern expansion from a presumably full‐pluvial refugium in the Mojave River basin. Four geographic subgroups are evident within X. tereticaudus, and there is a signature of northern expansion from a presumably full‐pluvial refugium in the Sonoran coastal plains. Roughly congruent phylogeographic patterns are found within five arid‐adapted taxa, indicating a strong element of vicariance during the assembly of the generally transitional Mojave Desert biota. Main conclusions We present a preliminary model for the historical assembly of the Mojave Desert biota that indicates a strong vicariant element producing autochthonous lineages (including X. mohavensis) that diverged during the major geological and climatic events of the last 5 Myr. Phylogeographic partitioning within the Mojave Desert underscores the necessity of immediate conservation measures for this unique and fragile arid ecosystem that is locked between two large metropolitan population centres and is the target of continued adverse environmental impact.
