Survival and growth of Asian clamsmay be more sensitive endpoints than benthicmacroinvertebrate community richness parametersat distinguishing biotic impairmentattributable to complex effluents fromcoal-burning utilities. We conducted (1) fieldbioassays with the Asian clam (Corbiculafluminea) during 2000–02 and (2) rapidbioassessments of benthic macroinvertebratecommunities during 2000–01 at sitesupstream/downstream of American ElectricPower's (AEP) Clinch River Plant (CRP) inRussell County, Virginia (U.S.A). Survival andgrowth of transplanted C. fluminea weresignificantly impaired within the CRP effluentplume (averages of 35% and 0.21 mm,respectively) relative to all other study siteswithin the Clinch River (averages of 89% and1.58 mm). Conversely, richness metrics forEphemeroptera,Ephemeroptera-Plecoptera-Trichoptera (EPT), andtotal taxa were not reduced downstream of theCRP. However, relative abundance metrics forEphemeroptera and EPT were minimally reduced atthe CRP-influenced site during 2000–01. Moreimportantly, our results suggest that richnessmetrics for benthic macroinvertebratecommunities may be inadequate for assessing theeffects of complex industrial effluents on C. fluminea. These findings have implicationsfor bioassessment techniques employed tomonitor streams inhabited by imperiledfreshwater mussels because (1) C. flumineaand Unionoidea are ecologicallysimilar and (2) recent findings suggest certaingenera of Unionidae may be more sensitive thanC. fluminea.  相似文献

Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine mollusk distributions in proximity to waste-water treatment plants (WTP's) in the upper Clinch River and to test the tolerance of two mollusk species to monochloramine and unionized ammonia, the major toxicants in domestic effluent. River reaches up to 3.7 km downstream of WTP's were devoid of freshwater mussels (Unionidae), and tolerance to effluents varied among snails, sphaeriid clams, and the asian clam Corbicula fluminea. Residential communities with septic systems had no measurable impact on mollusk assemblages downstream.Laboratory bioassays with glochidia of Villosa iris yielded the following results: 24 h EC50 and LC50 values of 0.042 mg l–1 and 0.084 mg l–1 monochloramine, respectively; and 24 h EC50 and LC50 of 0.237 mg l–1 and 0.284 mg l–1 unionized ammonia, respectively. Glochidia rank among the most sensitive invertebrates in their tolerance to these toxicants. The snail Pleurocera unciale unciale was moderately sensitive, with 96 h LC50 values of 0.252 mg l–1 monochloramine and 0.742 mg l–1 unionized ammonia. Monitoring of monochloramine and unionized ammonia concentrations 0.1 km below WTP outfalls indicated that monochloramine was the toxicant likely inhibiting mollusk recovery below these plants.The Unit is jointly supported by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, The Wildlife Management Institute and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.  相似文献

Since the 1990s, biological invasions have captured the attention of the scientific community as an important element of global change and a major threat to biodiversity. The inland waters of South America provide two examples of biological invasions. This review examines bivalve invasions in South America, summarizes the research results for two species, the Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea) and the golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei), and suggests further studies. The rapid expansion of invasive bivalves into these environments involves significant changes. Until now, C. fluminea, the Asian clam, did not produce generalized macrofouling in the Neotropical region, as is common in the Holarctic region. However, the first specific cases of macrofouling by C. fluminea were recently detected in heat interchangers of power stations in Brazil. On the other hand, L. fortunei is provoking new economic impacts in South American freshwaters through macrofouling. Before the invasion by the golden mussel, macrofouling was recorded only in the marine and estuarine environments of the Neotropical region. The impact caused by invasive bivalves in this region is not only economic, however. Rapid changes in the benthic community, favoring the presence of Oligochaeta and Hirudinea, as well as the displacement of native species of mollusks, are among the problems related to the presence of the golden mussel. Another issue is the settlement of golden mussels on native bivalves. This bivalve is now a new element in the diet of some native fish species, being the main food item in some cases.  相似文献

  • 1 Within the past 10 years the introduced exotic bivalve, Corbicula fluminea, has spread from the Savannah River through a riverine swamp into a third-order blackwater tributary on the Savannah River Site (SRS). We examined the effects of this invasion on a native bivalve, Elliptio cornplanata, and on seston concentration in the stream.
  • 2 Corbicula fluminea has not yet colonized the entire stream and its distribution limit is coincident with the occurrence of gravel beds.
  • 3 Corbicula fluminea appears to cause localized reduction of seston concentration and may rapidly clear the sediment boundary layer of food. There was no evidence of a negative impact on the distribution of the native bivalve in spite of high measured rates of water clearance by C. fluminea.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the consumption of alternative food sources (water column and sediment) and the potential competition under different conditions between Diplodon parallelopipedon (native) and Corbicula fluminea (non-native). We evaluated filtration and ingestion rates of water column at 6 and 24 h, held with and without organic matter and different phytoplankton types: needle-shaped green algae (Ankistrodesmus sp.) and filamentous cyanobacteria (Planktothrix agardhii) dominated communities. Our results confirmed higher filtration and ingestion rates per biomass unit for C. fluminea in the presence of sediment without organic matter. However, when we compared the filtration of bivalves held in sediment with organic matter, D. parallelopipedon rates were not significantly different from C. fluminea values. Moreover, in the presence of filamentous cyanobacteria, only C. fluminea filtration and ingestion rates decreased significantly. Our experimental results and previous field evidence concur that C. fluminea were not able to outcompete the native bivalves in organic matter rich sediment and cyanobacteria blooms conditions. The differential responses to the eutrophication process between exotic and native bivalves, apparently favoring the later, might buffer the potential competition interactions allowing their coexistence.  相似文献

Unionid mussels are among the most threatened group of freshwater organisms globally. They are known for their ability to filter food particles from flowing and standing waters. However, invasive bivalve species, such as the Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea) in North America, have the potential to overlap in feeding and potentially out-compete the native species. Yet, the feeding preferences of unionid mussels and C. fluminea are incompletely understood. We hypothesized that Elliptio crassidens (native) and C. fluminea (invasive) would select for specific organic components present within seston. We examined changes in seston (dry mass and ash-free dry mass) resulting from bivalve feeding activity for three size classes of material that were isolated using gravimetric filtration. The treatments were also sub-sampled for flow cytometry (FC) which separated the suspended materials in the stream water into five categories: detritus, heterotrophic bacteria, picoautotrophs, nanoautotrophs, and heterotrophic nanoeukaryotes. Our results indicated that both species of bivalve showed preferences for organic and living materials. E. crassidens preferentially filtered nanoeukaryotes, whose decreases were associated with an increase in bacteria. In contrast, C. fluminea preferred smaller materials through selective filtration of picoautotrophs. In addition, both species increased the concentration of large materials toward the end of the experiment because of the suspension of their pseudofeces biodeposits. To our knowledge, this study is the first to examine grazing by bivalve species on natural stream particulate matter using FC. Our results suggest that native and non-native mussels have different functional roles, which has important implications for organic matter processing and food webs in streams.  相似文献

In order to improve the molecular basis for the use of bivalve cholinesterases as a reliable biomarker for aquatic pollution, the polymorphism and characterization of these enzymes in Mytilus edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis and Corbicula fluminea were investigated. All results are consistent with the presence of only one pharmacological form of cholinesterase in each species. The molecular masses were 180 kDa for the two marine mussels and 240 kDa for C. fluminea. The cholinesterases are anchored to the membrane by a glycosyl inositol phosphate like the Ga form (type I) described in vertebrates. Surprisingly, these cholinesterases were poorly inhibited by organophosphorous compounds compared to enzymes from other sources. This suggests that these bivalves could be used as a biomarker for acute rather than chronic contaminations by anticholinesterase insecticides.  相似文献

Using the bivalve macrofouler Corbicula fluminea, the suitability of in vitro testing as a stepping stone towards the improvement of control methods based on chemical mixtures was addressed in this study. In vitro cholinesterase (ChE) activity inhibition following single exposure of C. fluminea tissue to four model chemicals (the organophosphates dimethoate and dichlorvos, copper and sodium dodecyl phosphate [SDS]) was first assessed. Consequently, mixtures of dimethoate with copper and dichlorvos with SDS were tested and modelled; mixtures with ChE revealed synergistic interactions for both chemical pairs. These synergic combinations were subsequently validated in vivo and the increased control potential of these selected combinations was verified, with gains of up to 50% in C. fluminea mortality relative to corresponding single chemical treatments. Such consistency supports the suitability of using time- and cost-effective surrogate testing platforms to assist the development of biofouling control strategies incorporating mixtures.  相似文献

Background  

Doubly uniparental inheritance (DUI) is an atypical system of animal mtDNA inheritance found only in some bivalves. Under DUI, maternally (F genome) and paternally (M genome) transmitted mtDNAs yield two distinct gender-associated mtDNA lineages. The oldest distinct M and F genomes are found in freshwater mussels (order Unionoida). Comparative analyses of unionoid mitochondrial genomes and a robust phylogenetic framework are necessary to elucidate the origin, function and molecular evolutionary consequences of DUI. Herein, F and M genomes from three unionoid species, Venustaconcha ellipsiformis, Pyganodon grandis and Quadrula quadrula have been sequenced. Comparative genomic analyses were carried out on these six genomes along with two F and one M unionoid genomes from GenBank (F and M genomes of Inversidens japanensis and F genome of Lampsilis ornata).  相似文献

软体动物贝壳表型是适应性进化的结果,为探究贝壳形态特性与软体动物随水流扩散功能的相关性,实验选取9种具代表性的腹足纲和双壳纲贝类作为研究对象,研究了其成体的壳-体质量比与静水沉降特性及二者的相关性。结果表明:体质量的变异系数(C.V.=1.11)大于壳长(C.V.=0.67)、壳宽(C.V.=0.54)的变异系数;壳-体质量比具较强的种属特异性,种内变异系数小(C.V.=0.20),而种间差异极显著(P < 0.01)。受试贝类的平均壳-体质量比为0.32±0.13,陆生贝类的壳-体质量比显著小于水生贝类(P < 0.01),壳-体质量比最大的河蚬(0.54±0.06)是最小的非洲大蜗牛(0.17±0.04)的3倍,福寿螺的壳-体质量比为0.50±0.06。双壳类和螺类的沉降行为差异明显,只有中华园田螺、铜锈环棱螺和河蚬不能在静水中漂浮;沉降速度最大的河蚬((24.99±4.22)cm/s)是最小的椭圆萝卜螺((4.13±0.96)cm/s)的6倍,入侵种非洲大蜗牛((18.30±3.64)cm/s)和福寿螺((21.77±5.23)cm/s)与土著种铜锈环棱螺((19.48±3.14)cm/s)和中华园田螺((21.44±3.92)cm/s)在沉降速度上无显著差异(P < 0.01)。成体贝类的壳-体质量比与沉降速度(R2=0.28)、沉降加速度(R2=0.39)之间存在一定的相关性。在此基础上,贝类沉降特性随生活史变化的研究将进一步揭示贝类进化与种群扩散中的生态水力学作用。  相似文献

Several species of bivalves coexist at the lower intertidal of large tidal flats located in the enclosed or inland coast of the northern area of the Nord-Patagonic archipelagos on the Chilean coast (ca. 40–42°S): Tagelus dombeii (Lamarck), Mulinia edulis (King & Broderip), Venus antiqua King & Broderip, Semele solida (Gray), Gari solida (Gray) and Diplodonta insconspicua Philippi. To explore possible spatial variation in the community structure of the macroinfauna inhabiting sediments with different assemblages of these bivalves, seasonal sampling was carried out during 2003–2004 at two tidal flats of that area. Higher species richness and specimen densities of the macroinfauna occurred in sediments with the higher densities of bivalves, especially in sediments where the deep burrower T. dombeii reaches its greatest abundances. Our results suggest that, apart from presence of bivalves, the burrowing depth of these organisms is also important in promoting the abundance of macroinfauna. Our results are in contrast with earlier conceptualizations for community organization of the soft bottom macroinfauna inhabiting intertidal flats, related to biological interactions occurring among different phyletic groups, such as that arguing that suspension feeding bivalves (such as T. dombeii and V. antiqua) will negatively affect the recruitment of species with planktonic larvae, by filtering them before they become established in the substrate. Thus, it is concluded that beneficial effects of bivalve bioturbation overcome that negative effects on the macroinfauna, although detrimental effects may well occur at bivalve densities higher than those studied here. Unionid (Mollusca: Unionidae) densities have declined dramatically throughout the Laurentian Great Lakes after the introduction of dreissenid mussels (Mollusca: Dreissenidae). Recent surveys in some Great Lake coastal wetlands have found abundant unionid populations, but the factors that reduce zebra mussels on unionids in these habitats are not well understood. In 2001–2002, we tested effects of predation and unionid burrowing on corbiculids, sphaeriids and dreissenids in a Great Lake coastal wetland in western Lake Erie. In one experiment, we reduced access by molluscivores using exclosures with two mesh sizes (1.3 cm × 1.3 cm; 5 cm × 10 cm) and sampled bivalves after 15 months. Small mesh exclosures had higher numbers of dreissenids, Corbicula fluminea and sphaeriids (54.9, 3.8, 22.6 individuals/m2, respectively) than large mesh exclosures (0.0, 1.13, 0.13 individuals/m2, respectively) or open controls (0.3, 1.0, 0.1 individuals/m2, respectively). Numbers of dreissenids on C. fluminea were higher in small mesh exclosures (3.8 dreissenids/Corbicula) than in large mesh exclosures (0.1 dreissenids/Corbicula) or cageless controls (0␣dreissenids/Corbicula). In a second experiment, we held two species of live unionids (Leptodea fragilis, Quadrula quadrula) and immobile Pyganodon grandis shells in exclosures (2.5 cm × 2.5 cm mesh) with either 5 cm, 10 cm, or 20 cm deep sediments and sampled bivalves after 2 months. There were fewer dreissenids on L. fragilis than P. grandis shells, but there was no difference in the number of dreissenids on Q. quadrula and P. grandis shells. Numbers of attached dreissenids were higher inside (189–494 dreissenids/unionid) than outside (8–11 dreissenids/unionid) exclosures, and densities of sphaeriid and C. fluminea clams were also higher inside (21.8, 4.7 individuals/m2, respectively) than outside (0.4, 0.9 individuals/m2, respectively) exclosures. Numbers of attached dreissenids were higher on unionids that could burrow below the sediments (20 cm depth) than unionids in shallow sediments (5 cm depth) for unexplained reasons. Our data suggest that molluscivores can play a pivotal role in limiting numbers of bivalves including dreissenids in coastal wetlands.  相似文献

Summary Concentrations of phosphoadenylate nucleotides and the adenylate energy charge ((ATP+1/2ADP)/(ATP+ADP+AMP)) have been suggested as sensitive integrating measures of the energy state of organisms. This synoptic study investigated the seasonal and spatial variation of phosphoadenylate concentrations and AEC in two freshwater bivalve molluscs, the paper-shell clam, Anodonta imbecillis and the asian clam, Corbicula fluminea. Concentrations of all three adenylates, as well as the total adenylate concentration and adenylate energy charge of both species varied seasonally. These fluctuations were closely related to reproductive periods in both species. Total adenylate concentrations and ATP concentrations were slightly negatively correlated with shell length in A. imbecillis but the ADP and AMP concentrations and AEC were not significantly correlated with shell length. In C. fluminea the AEC was negatively correlated were positively correlated with shell length. Neither species exhibited significant differences in AEC between two collection locations. When C. fluminea collected from the Savannah River were acclimated and fed in the laboratory their AEC increased significantly.  相似文献

太浦河连接东太湖和黄浦江,是东太湖向下游行洪的主河道,也是黄浦江上游重要的引水水源。分别于2017年10月、12月和2018年3月、6月在太浦河沿程设置的5个站点开展了大型底栖动物季节频次的取样调研,分析了太浦河大型底栖动物群落的结构特征及其主要影响因子。调查期间共采集到大型底栖动物25种,隶属于3门6纲14科,其中以河蚬(Corbicula fluminea)为代表的双壳类和以铜锈环棱螺(Bellamya aeruginosa)为代表的腹足类处优势地位。太浦河大型底栖动物群落的密度、生物量及多样性特征在不同站点间均存在显著差异(P<0.05);而在不同季节间均不存在显著差异(P>0.05)。聚类排序分析表明,太浦河大型底栖动物群落在空间上的差异较季节间的变化更为明显。太浦河大型底栖动物群落的物种组成特征与太浦河、东太湖的水文连通格局密切相关;而沿程不同程度人为干扰下的水体营养水平以及底质类型与生境异质性等生境条件对太浦河大型底栖动物群落的分布特征具有重要影响,其综合作用机理有待进一步研究。  相似文献

Synopsis The longheaded eagle ray, Aetobatus flagellum, has recently increased significantly in numbers in Ariake Sound. It is assumed that it feeds on bivalves and so, to prevent predation by eagle rays on bivalves, a ‘predator control program’ aimed at reducing the ray population has been in place since 2001. We examined their occurrence, age, growth and food in Ariake Sound to obtain data on the ecology of the eagle ray and provide basic information on their potential impact on bivalve stocks in Ariake Bay. The eagle ray is a seasonal visitor to Ariake Sound, increasing in numbers from April, and peaking during the summer. None were captured during surveys in December and February. Their movement pattern around the bay differed according to sex. Pregnant females were caught in the estuary during August and September. Females grew to a larger size than males and apparently lived longer. The maximum ages were 19 years for females and 9 years for males. Growth until two years was similar in both sexes, but after 2 years females grew larger. The eagle ray fed only on bivalves, especially Ruditapes philippinarum and Atrina pectinata, very important fishery species farmed in Ariake Bay.  相似文献

Introduced species are having major impacts in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems worldwide. Given that resources for management are limited and that only a small percentage of invaders are likely to cause large ecological change, management priorities should be based on the severity of immediate and anticipated impacts on native assemblages and commercial species. This paper synthesizes work on the current and predicted impacts of an introduced predatory seastar (Asterias amurensis) on soft sediment assemblages, including native species subject to commercial fishing, in the Derwent Estuary and other areas of southeast Tasmania. Due to the absence of baseline data prior to the arrival of the seastar and the presence of other anthropogenic stressors in the estuary, estimating the impact of the seastar is difficult. To help overcome the weaknesses of any single method, our assessment of impact rests on 'weight of evidence' from multiple approaches. Results from experimental manipulations at small scales, detailed observations of feeding, and field surveys over a range of spatial scales in areas with and without the seastar provide strong evidence that predation by the seastar is likely to be responsible for the decline and subsequent rarity of bivalve species that live just below or on the sediment surface in the Derwent Estuary. The data suggest that should seastar densities in other areas on the Tasmanian coast attain the current levels in the Derwent Estuary, there are likely to be large direct effects on native assemblages, particularly on populations of large surface dwelling bivalves, including several commercial species. Given the seastar's ability to exploit a broad range of food resources other than bivalves, and the functional importance of bivalves in native systems, we predict broader direct and indirect effects on native assemblages. We would be unable to reach these same conclusions from a single approach to assessing impacts. The overall picture from the combination of methods at different scales provides more information than the sum of the results of the separate lines of investigation.  相似文献

This pilot study explored the potential of juvenile European Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser sturio to feed on two invasive bivalve species, the Asian clam Corbicula fluminea and the Eurasian zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha. Preliminary results indicate that native A. sturio were feeding on D. polymorpha at a very limited rate and their potential to prevent the establishment of invasive bivalve species, in new and previously invaded areas, is considered limited.  相似文献

It is often difficult to accurately assess the long-term effects of invaders because of a lack of data and the changing nature of ecosystems. However, available historical information can be used to make comparisons with current conditions and generate hypotheses that can be tested experimentally. This approach was used to examine changes in the bivalve community of Mission Bay, San Diego, California, USA. A 20-year dataset on subtidal bivalves shows a marked increase in abundance of the exotic mussel Musculista senhousia, and concomitant declines in species richness and the abundance of the native Solen rostriformis. Currently, Musculista also dominates the tidal creeks of a remnant salt marsh and an adjacent restored marsh, and is 100 times more abundant than any native bivalve species. A comparison of the bivalves now present in the remnant marsh creek to the community present 35 years ago demonstrates that while Musculista increased in abundance, the native Chione fluctifraga disappeared from the creek. In the same time frame, two other natives, Macoma nasuta and C. undatella, appeared in the system. Experiments demonstrate that the growth and survivorship of the surface-dwelling, suspension-feeding Chione spp. significantly decrease in the presence of Musculista, whereas the deeper-dwelling, deposit-feeding Macoma nasuta shows no such inhibition. Viewing these results in the broader context of physical change within the wetland explains some patterns of observed change and suggests effects due at least in part to Musculista, but also demonstrates the complexities associated with assessing long-term patterns in systems affected by multiple factors. Inhibition of the mitochondrial electron transfer chain and induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production are one of the roots of cadmium (Cd) toxicity. To appreciate the impact of Cd on mitochondria, we focused on the expression of CoxI gene which encodes the subunit I of the Cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV of the respiratory chain). CoxI gene expression was studied by real-time quantitative PCR in three species: two freshwater bivalves (Corbicula fluminea and Dreissena polymorpha) and one marine bivalve (diploid or triploid Crassostrea gigas). Bivalves were exposed for 10 or 14 days to 0.13 μM Cd2+ and 15.3 μM Zn2+ in controlled laboratory conditions. We demonstrate that in the three mollusk species CoxI gene was up-regulated by Cd. Zinc (Zn), which is known to have antioxidant properties, had no effect on CoxI gene expression. In the presence of Cd and Zn, CoxI gene inducibility was lower than after a single Cd exposure, in each species; result that could not be fully explained by a decreased Cd accumulation. CoxI gene induction by Cd was 4.8-fold higher in triploid oysters than in diploid ones, indicating a possible influence of triploidy on animal responses to Cd contamination.  相似文献

Suspension feeding by bivalves has been hypothesized to control phytoplankton biomass in shallow aquatic ecosystems. Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina, USA is a shallow lake with a diverse bivalve assemblage and low to moderate phytoplankton biomass levels. Filtration and ingestion rates of two relatively abundant species in the lake, the endemic unionid, Elliptio waccamawensis, and an introduced species, Corbicula fluminea, were measured in experiments using natural phytoplankton for durations of 1 to 6 days. Measured filtration and ingestion rates averaged 1.78 and 1.121 ind.–1 d–1, much too low to control phytoplankton at the observed phytoplankton biomass levels and growth rates. Measured ingestion rates averaged 4.80 and 1.50 µg chlorophyll a ind.–1 d–1, too low to support individuals of either species. The abundance of benthic microalgae in Lake Waccamaw reaches 200 mg chlorophyll a m–2 in the littoral zone and averages almost an order of magnitude higher than depth-integrated phytoplankton chlorophyll a. Total microalgal biomass in the lake is therefore not controlled by suspension feeding by bivalves.  相似文献
