海洋溢油污染不仅关系到天然渔业资源、海鸟等生物、海域环境、海岸线生态的破坏,而且对渔业、捕捞业、旅游业都会造成巨大损失,甚至会直接或间接地危害人类的健康。短期来看,一方面石油、燃料油等进入海洋后,对海洋生物资源造成影响;另一方面会危害附近海区的海洋环境,侵害海洋生物以及海鸟赖以生存和栖息的环境。长期来看,持续的海洋污染会导致的生态环境失衡,海洋的生产力也随之下降。溢油事故中的渔业资源损失评估作为追究污染事故责任,尽快恢复海域资源与环境的重要一环需要不断改进创新。为了定量确定海洋溢油事故发生后渔业资源的损失程度,将传统的评估模式与现代科学技术相结合,通过海洋动力学、流体力学、海洋生物学、环境化学等多个学科交叉融合,将流场风场模型、溢油模型、海域调查监测、卫星遥感技术、毒性效应和渔业资源的损失评估方法相结合,形成一种渔业资源损失评估的数值模拟评估模式,以完善溢油事故中渔业资源损失评估体系。在溢油事故现场监测数据的基础上,运用数学计算理论选择相对应的溢油模型,结合具体溢油事故案例的潮流数据和风场数据,模拟海上溢油污染的时空分布情况。采用卫星遥感技术根据不同油品在海水中不同的亮度表现,处理得到溢油油膜信息,与模拟得到的油膜信息进行比对验证,并对模型进行修正,通过模拟得出污染海域油浓度分布与溢油污染范围信息,结合溢油污染对不同海洋生物的毒性效应,得到渔业资源的损失程度,为溢油事故的渔业资源损失评估提供一种思路,为溢油事故发生后的损失评估和事故处理起到一定的参考辅助作用。  相似文献

The studies of aquatic parasitology and of aquatic pollution effects both have experienced increasing interest during the recent fifteen years. Although considerable effort has been spent on studying the role of pollution as a cause or a trigger of anomalies, tumors and infectious diseases in aquatic organisms, the interactions between pollution and parasitism have been largely neglected by scientists.Pollution and other man-made alterations of the aquatic environment may affect a parasite community directly by acting on free-living parasite stages or on ectoparasites, or indirectly by acting on the intermediate or the definitive host population. Certain pollution conditions favour the propagation of parasites by excluding their natural predators, by reducing the resistance of their hosts or by providing improved living conditions for their intermediate hosts. In a number of experimental studies parasitized organisms have been shown to suffer from greater mortalities when exposed to high temperature, to low oxygen stress or to high levels of dissolved heavy metal salts, when compared to nonparasitized control animals. Unfortunately, field studies on synergistic effects of pollution and parasites on host populations are still scarce and seldom offer more than qualitative observations and theoretical evaluations.The complexity of the pollution-parasite-host system complicates the use of parasites as indicators of pollution effects. However, experience from aquaculture practice teaches that a number of (mostly ecto-) parasites are more susceptible to certain chemicals (used as parasiticides) and to artificial alterations of salinity, temperature or oxygen content of the water than their hosts. Accordingly, it is postulated that during future studies the composition of ectoparasitic faunas of aquatic organisms might turn out to become a useful and quickly reacting indicator for effects of certain pollution conditions, such as anthropogene oxygen deficiency, salt introduction from salines into freshwater ecosystems, and introduction of certain heavy metal salts.  相似文献

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are recognized as priority pollutants that can negatively impact the environment and human health. These chemicals enter the environment from both natural and anthropogenic sources where they can persist and cause detrimental effects to biological systems. Like with most other environmental pollutants, the most important mechanism by which PAHs are removed occurs through the activities of certain types of bacteria (i.e. the PAH degraders). In recent years we have dramatically increased our knowledge on the types of bacteria playing key roles in the removal of PAHs in the marine environment. However, there remains a lack of complete understanding regarding the full breadth of species and their ecological functioning in PAH removal from contaminated waters. This paper discusses efforts to identify new species of marine bacteria that degrade PAHs using a DNA-based targeted approach called stable-isotope probing (DNA-SIP). In addition to providing greater insight on the identity and functioning of the marine microbial world, this information is anticipated to enhance our design of more efficient ways in cleaning up marine hydrocarbon pollution.  相似文献

Sublethal effects of pollution may be significant to survival of a stock of marine fish or even a species. Such effects sometimes lead to reproductive failure and have been identified so far only in freshwater systems. Atlantic salmon have disappeared from many streams in Europe and eastern North America, partly as a result of pollution in their freshwater spawning areas and in their estuarine nursing grounds. Reductions in populations of marine fishes due to pollution solely have not yet been demonstrated. However, Baltic Sea seals, where reproductive failure is apparently associated with high concentrations of DDT and polychlorinated biphenyl in the blubber, may have suffered a decline owing to the presence of these organochlorines. Sublethal effects of pollutants have been studied in the laboratory, essentially under four categories: (1) physiology (growth, swimming performance, respiration, circulation); (2) biochemistry/cell structure (blood chemistry, enzyme activity, endocrinology, histochemistry); (3) behaviour/neurophysiology; and (4) reproduction. Not all pollutants elicit meaningful responses in all categories, and a response is not always linear with pollutant concentration. For application to survival of populations the response has to be ultimately related to a healthy progression through a full life cycle, including successful reproduction. In recent time, physiological studies have moved into polluted marine environments with mobile laboratories having continuous sampling capability, to observe effects of pollutants in situ on marine organisms. The Controlled Ecosystem Pollution Experiment (Cepex) in Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, endeavours to investigate the effects of low concentrations of pollutants on marine organisms in large plastic silos having a slow replacement of water.  相似文献

Recently, the impact of petroleum pollution on marine plankton has been complemented by a great concern. This review summarizes the reports about toxic effects of oil water accommodated fraction (WAF) on marine phytoplankton, zooplankton and early life stage of animal. For the oil WAF, toxicants are mainly composed of the aromatic hydrocarbons, such as the benzene hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with 2–5 rings. The oil WAF, especially the PAHs, can be accumulated in plankton due to their great lipophilic abilities, and thus elicites various deleterious effects. Toxicological tests show that marine plankton is very sensitive to the petroleum WAF, as the order of median effective/lethal concentration is merely μg/L or mg/L. There are species and developmental stages differences of plankton tolerance to petroleum WAF, and the toxicity of different oil WAF is various. Generally, its toxicity enhances with increasing carbonic chain length and benzene ring number. Many studies on the acute and sub-acute toxic effects of oil WAF have been done, however few researches on its chronic toxic effects has been carried out till now. Besides, most reports focused on the levels from molecule to individual, though very little work of petroleum toxic effects has ever been performed on the marine plankton population or community levels. BackgroundExposure to air pollution contributes importantly to excess morbidity and mortality. And while regulatory actions under the “Clean Air Act” have saved millions of lives by improving air quality, there are still millions of people in the U.S. who live in areas where particulate air pollution (PM) levels exceed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Therefore, apart from such localities working to attain such standards the protection of the health of public and in particular those at high risk might benefit from interventional strategies that would ameliorate air pollution's adverse health effects. Because inflammation and oxidative stress appear to mediate the health effects of air pollution, one interventional approach to consider is the use of dietary supplementation or medication with anti-inflammatory or antioxidant properties to block the biological responses that initiate the pathophysiological process that culminates in adverse health effects.Scope of reviewThis article reviews the capability of dietary supplementation, such as antioxidant vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and medications as a strategy to mitigate air pollution-induced subclinical cardiopulmonary effects.Major conclusionsAntioxidant vitamins C and E protect the lungs against short-term ozone and PM exposure. Polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as fish oil and olive oil appear to offer protection against short-term air pollution-induced adverse cardiovascular responses.General significanceTaking dietary supplements or medications with antioxidant or anti-inflammatory properties has the potential to provide at least partial protection against air pollution-induced adverse health effects in those individuals who are known to be most susceptible, namely those with pre-existing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Of all substances threatening life in the seas, oil has received by far the most attention from the public, administrators, politicians and scientists. The main reasons for this are: (1) even limited amounts of oil are easily visible; (2) oil can exert obvious negative effects, e. g. extensive damage to birds and other animals, impairment of the recreational value of beaches and marinas, losses in fisheries due to tainting of catches and rejection by the public of seafood from areas known to have been recently polluted. In addition, dramatic tanker accidents are widely publicized. During the last decade tens of thousands of papers have been published about the impact of oil on the marine environment, and we are well informed about most basic facts, such as input and fate of oil, toxicity to adult organisms and recolonization. Due to considerable sophistication of analytical techniques, especially the introduction of glass-capillary gas chromatography, we are well aware that recently formed biogenic hydrocarbons by far extend the input directly due to pollution. Large gaps exist in our knowledge about sedimentation and transport of weathered oil, natural degradation rates, and the flow of hydrocarbons through the food web. Relatively little is known about the influence of oil and dispersants upon complex ecosystems. The often mentioned suspicion of increased cancer probability in humans due to seafood contaminated by hydrocarbons has not been substantiated; in fact, it seems unlikely that such an effect exists. By far the greatest uncertainty about potential oil impact concerns possible negative effects of hydrocarbons on chemical communication mechanisms between organisms. Intensive studies of behaviour scientists working with concentrations far below the toxic level are needed in fisheries biology, zoology and botany. Most cases of oil contamination known thus far have been limited in space and time; the oil has turned out to be degradable by natural processes. Such oil pollution neither endangers nor considerably impairs the future of mankind. In future research, more than anything else, objective critical evaluation and careful quantification are needed. The International Oil Pollution Compensation Fund is a successful international scheme providing supplementary compensation for vessel source oil pollution damage. Some domestic schemes such as the Ship-Source Oil Pollution Fund in Canada and the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund in the United States have also been successful. China established its Vessel-Source Oil Pollution Compensation Fund in July 2012. This article examines the international and domestic schemes that provide supplementary compensation for vessel source oil pollution and makes some suggestions for amendment of the newly established Chinese national compensation fund.  相似文献

Information on possible effects of pollution on fish life is reviewed with special emphasis to the North Sea. Concentrations of heavy metals are high in onshore waters, sediments and organisms. Offshore regions are considered to be not endangered. In estuaries concentrations of certain heavy metals are often surpassing thresholds, which have been experimentally demonstrated to produce sublethal effects on marine organisms. Also mussel culture areas had to be closed due to excess of cadmium contamination. Mercury in fillets of cod in the southern North Sea sometimes reaches 0.3 ppm representing 1/3 of the legal limit. Reductions of inputs are necessary due to the bioaccumulative and toxic potential of heavy metals. Organochlorine contamination of water, sediments and organisms is higher in the southern than in the northern North Sea. In offshore areas clearly elevated levels of PCB's, which are the dominating organochlorine compound in marine organisms, have been analyzed. At present only a minor fraction of total organochlorine residues accumulated in marine biota is analyzed. Margins between experimentally derived lethal levels and those occurring in marine biota are narrow suggesting that sublethal effects might occur. One of the special concerns in the context of organochlorine contamination has to be seen in the potential of these substances affecting the reproductive capacity of marine organisms. Reduction measures are urgently necessary and should include substances with bioaccumulative and toxicological potential, which are not presently included in Marine Monitoring Programmes. Impact of oil pollution is considered to be a regional problem, although especially in estuaries concentrations in the water column might be high. Input through oil platforms has led to local reductions in benthic communities. Measures have to be taken, to further reduce these inputs also in view to avoid contamination of fish in the vicinity of oil fields. Oxygen depletion in German and Danish coastal waters has been shown to be a severe degradation in coastal water quality resulting in significant impact on fish populations. Indications for large-scale avoidance reactions of low DO-areas and mortalities of fish and benthos organisms have been demonstrated. It is suspected that the low DO-situations are related to increased nutrients input and high phytoplankton production. Improvement of the situation can only be expected, if input of nutrients is reduced. Reasons for the occurrence of toxic plankton blooms are not understood. An intensified research is necessary, to avoid damage to fisheries and mariculture. Although activity of radionucleids in North Sea waters is increased due to input of radioactive material from La Hague and Sellafield reprocessing units, the present levels of activity are not considered to be a threat for marine life. The same holds for thermal pollution, which is, depending on the recipient area, expected to have only local effects. Sewage sludge dumping and discharge of untreated sewage introduce significant amounts of accompanying heavy metals, which can be expected to have a negative influence on the total metal budget of recipient waters. Nutrient input through sewage will exhibit only local effects. Dumping of wastes from titanium dioxide industry are suspected to be causally linked to the occurrence of increased prevalences of certain diseases of dab in the German Bight. Present management strategies should take account of the fact that through dumping of waste from titanium dioxide production significant quantities of heavy metal are introduced into the southern North Sea. Also the incineration of chemical wastes at sea should be reduced due to uncertainties concerning quantities and toxicity of incineration products and their potential impact on marine life. It is concluded that clear evidence exists for pollution impact in estuarine regions. Most of the major estuaries at the North Sea coast show benthos reductions, which can be related to water quality and it has to be assumed that areas of a sublethal effect are located in the vicinity of those areas of well demonstrated effects. They are of unknown size and attempts have to be undertaken to quantify areas of sublethal impact. The occurrence of fish diseases is interpreted as an expression of degraded water quality. Some of the diseases detected can produce mortality, thereby having an as yet unquantified impact on fish populations. The presence of fish diseases also reduces the marketability of catches. It cannot be excluded that changes in species composition of fish populations in German Wadden Sea areas are related to pollution. Concentrations of organochlorine substances in fishes of the southern North Sea give rise to the concern that their reproductive capability might be impaired. Future work has to be directed to this problem. Impact of pollution on populations of marine organisms has so far not been demonstrated.  相似文献

Experimental studies on some genetic effects of marine pollution   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Following the results of a series of investigations carried out to estimate the degree of marine pollution by utilizing certain marine filter feeders, such as the blue musselMytilus galloprovincialis, research has been planned to detect possible genetic effects of pollutants, with special attention to those acting at the population level. The possible selective role of pollutants has been studied both in natural (Mytilus) and in experimental (Tisbe holothuriae) populations by utilizing some electrophoretically-detected gene-enzyme systems as genetic markers. For some of the seven polymorphic loci studied inMytilus (AP, LAP, 6-PGD, IDHs, IDHm, PGI, PGM) significant changes in gene frequencies have been detected which can be related to the degree of pollution in the sampling areas. In the more polluted areas these changes were accompanied by a decrease in the frequency of heterozygotes. Similar changes in gene frequencies also occurred in laboratory populations of the copepodTisbe, reared under various experimental conditions. In particular, certain alleles of two loci, PGI-1 and AP-1, exhibited an increase in frequency, especially in populations cultured at various levels of oil pollution. This trend appeared more significant for the locus PGI. The fact that equilibria are reached and that the less favoured alleles are nevertheless maintained in the populations, even at extremely low frequencies, suggests the balanced nature of these enzyme polymorphisms. The significance of the above findings is briefly discussed.  相似文献

海洋微塑料污染已成为全球性环境问题。微塑料粒径小,易与海洋生物发生相互作用,可通过多种途径进入海洋生物体内,并在其组织和器官中蓄积和转移,对机体产生毒害。微塑料可沿食物链进行传递,威胁海洋生态系统的健康与稳定。因此,海洋生物与微塑料的相互作用以及海洋微塑料污染的生态效应成为当前研究的热点。综述微塑料的生物附着、生物摄入、对海洋生物的毒性效应及其与化学污染物的复合毒性效应研究的基础上,提出未来微塑料生态效应研究应重点关注我国海洋环境中微塑料的污染现状及生物摄入状况、微塑料的生物效应及其毒理学机制研究、微塑料与其他污染物的复合效应、以及微塑料在海洋生态系统中的作用及其生物地球化学行为等。  相似文献

Oil pollution and climate have wide-scale impacts on seabird demographics   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Oil spills often spell disaster for marine birds caught in slicks. However, the impact of oil pollution on seabird population parameters is poorly known because oil spills usually occur in wintering areas remote from breeding colonies where birds may be distributed over a wide area, and because it is difficult to separate the effects of oil pollution from the effect of natural environmental variation on seabird populations. Using a long-term data set we show that over-winter survival of adult common guillemots (Uria aalge) is negatively affected by both the incidence of four major oil-spills in their wintering grounds and high values of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index. After controlling for the effect of the NAO index, we show that winter mortality of adult guillemots is doubled by major oil pollution incidents. Our results demonstrate that oil pollution can have wide-scale impacts on marine ecosystems that can be quantified using populations of marked individuals to estimate survival.  相似文献

The stomach oil produced by many marine birds of the order Procellariiformes is an important aspect of their breeding ecology. Fifty-seven samples of stomach oil from six species of subantarctic sea birds were examined by thin-layer and gas chromatography to determine the degree of variation in stomach oil composition between individuals of the same species. The wide variability detected, the typically marine composition of the component fatty acids and alcohols of the wax esters and triacyglycerols examined and the presence of pristane, squalene, and astaxanthin in the stomach oils all indicate that the bulk of the oil is derived directly from the food. This is in contrast to the nutritive fluids produced by secretion in several other groups of birds. Many of the stomach oils contain large amounts of wax ester and marine birds represent a significant link in the marine food web for the reconversion of zooplankton wax ester to triacylglycerol. No substantial offshore pollution by petroleum hydrocarbons was indicated by the samples; stomach oil samples from pelagic birds may be valuable in monitoring offshore pollution.  相似文献

Pollutants, originating from both land and sea, are responsible for significant lethal and sub-lethal effects on marine life. Pollution impacts all trophic levels, from primary producers to apex predators, and thus interferes with the structure of marine communities and consequently ecosystem functioning. Here we review the effects of sediments, eutrophication, toxics and marine litter. All are presently major concerns in Southeast Asia (SE Asia) and there is little indication that the situation is improving. Approximately 70% of SE Asia’s human population lives in coastal areas and intensive farming and aquaculture, rapid urbanization and industrialisation, greater shipping traffic and fishing effort, as well as widespread deforestation and nearshore development, are contributing towards the pollution problem. As SE Asia encompasses approximately 34% of the world’s reefs and between a quarter and a third of the world’s mangroves, as well as the global biodiversity triangle formed by the Malay Peninsular, the Philippines, and New Guinea, the need to reduce the impacts of marine pollution in this region is all the more critical.  相似文献

There is growing concern that modifications to the global environment such as ocean acidification and increased ultraviolet radiation may interact with anthropogenic pollutants to adversely affect the future marine environment. Despite this, little is known about the nature of the potential risks posed by such interactions. Here, we performed a multifactorial microcosm experiment to assess the impact of ocean acidification, ultraviolet B (UV‐B) radiation and oil hydrocarbon contamination on sediment chemistry, the microbial community (composition and function) and biochemical marker response of selected indicator species. We found that increased ocean acidification and oil contamination in the absence of UV‐B will significantly alter bacterial composition by, among other things, greatly reducing the relative abundance of Desulfobacterales, known to be important oil hydrocarbon degraders. Along with changes in bacterial composition, we identified concomitant shifts in the composition of oil hydrocarbons in the sediment and an increase in oxidative stress effects on our indicator species. Interestingly, our study identifies UV‐B as a critical component in the interaction between these factors, as its presence alleviates harmful effects caused by the combination of reduced pH and oil pollution. The model system used here shows that the interactive effect of reduced pH and oil contamination can adversely affect the structure and functioning of sediment benthic communities, with the potential to exacerbate the toxicity of oil hydrocarbons in marine ecosystems.  相似文献

The health benefits of seafood consumption have primarily been associated with protective effects against cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, intake of seafood has also been associated with improved foetal and infant development, as well as several other diseases and medical conditions. The health promoting effects have chiefly been attributed to the long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In addition, the general fatty acid profile is considered favourable. On the other hand, recent and emerging research on seafood proteins and other seafood derived components suggest that these nutritional components contribute to the health effects. In this paper we review the nutritional characteristics and health benefits of marine foods and ingredients, and discuss some current and future trends in marine food production.  相似文献

A recent rise in the reporting of diseases in marine organisms has raised concerns that ocean health is deteriorating. The goal of this study was to determine whether or not there has been a recent deterioration in marine mammal health by investigating the trends in disease reports over the past 40 years (categorized by the method of study, the species affected, and the etiology of the disease) and by exploring the changes in frequency of mass mortality events among marine mammals reported in the United States since 1978. The number of papers on marine mammal disease published each year has increased since 1966, although the annual publication rate appears to have stabilized since ∼1992. Those published in the 1960s and 1970s were largely about helminth and bacterial disease, those investigating viruses emerged in the late 1970s and increased in the 1980s and 1990s, whereas protozoal diseases and harmful algal toxins were largely not reported until the 1990s. The annual number of mass mortality events in the U.S. approximately doubled between 1980 and 1990 but since 2000 has been between seven and eight events per year. Causes of mass mortality events have included biotoxins, viruses, bacteria, parasites, human interactions, oil spills, and changes in oceanographic conditions. Events due to biotoxins appear to be increasing, but the change in the frequency of mass mortality events from other causes over the past 40 years cannot be determined from the available published literature due to changes in marine mammal abundance, inconsistencies in effort and extent of resources for pathological investigation, and advances in technology that have allowed improved detection of pathogens and toxins in more recent years. To ensure future information on the true incidence of marine diseases and their underlying causes is more reliable, specific and directed marine health monitoring programs, well-equipped stranding networks, and dedicated diagnostic laboratories are needed.  相似文献

Air quality in Christchurch has been debated widely over the last 30 years and at present there is a Draft Plan from the Canterbury Regional Council which has the main aim of improving air quality in the region. It has been shown in an inventory of emissions, that the main source of particulate pollution in the city is the use of solid fuel domestic heating appliances such as open fires and wood burners. Pollution from road traffic is considered a significant contributor to other contaminants but is less that 10% for particulate. There is local evidence that during the winter months, when atmospheric inversion conditions occur, levels of PM10 (particulate matter less than 10 µm in diameter) exceed local guidelines (50 mcg m-3 -24 hr average) approximately 30 times each year. Research performed in Christchurch suggests that these levels of air pollution account for both premature mortality and an increase in symptoms and medication requirements in susceptible sub-groups such as those with chronic obstructive airways disease. Ongoing research is planned in Christchurch and a collaborative approach between public health physicians, biostatisticians, toxicologists and clinical researchers is likely to yield further useful information which will inform the decision-making process by the Canterbury Regional Council.  相似文献

Pollution from road traffic is considered a significant contributor to other contaminants but is less that 10% for particulate. There is local evidence that during the winter months, when atmospheric inversion conditions occur, levels of PM10 (particulate matter less than 10 µm in diameter) exceed local guidelines (50 mcg m-3 -24 hr average) approximately 30 times each year. Research performed in Christchurch suggests that these levels of air pollution account for both premature mortality and an increase in symptoms and medication requirements in susceptible sub-groups such as those with chronic obstructive airways disease. Ongoing research is planned in Christchurch and a collaborative approach between public health physicians, biostatisticians, toxicologists and clinical researchers is likely to yield further useful information which will inform the decision-making process by the Canterbury Regional Council.  相似文献
