Glucose oxidation and oxygen consumption of isolated guinea pig and muskrat hearts

Glucose in Krebs-Henseleit buffer was presented to isolated Langendorff perfused muskrat and guinea pig hearts that were paced at 240 beats/min. Glucose uptake (amount removed from the perfusion fluid) was 3 times greater in the muskrat hearts than in the guinea pig heart. Glucose oxidation (amount converted to CO2) and oxygen consumption did not differ in the hearts of the two species. When glucose is the only exogenous substrate, isolated muskrat hearts extract more glucose than guinea pig hearts but oxidize similar amounts of glucose and have a similar myocardial oxygen consumption.     

Cholinergic innervation of the cornea and iris of the guinea pig

Cholinergic innervation of the cornea and iris of the newborn and adult guinea pig was studied by the technique of Karnovsky and Roots (1964). The given structures are both richly innervated. The cholinesterase reaction of the cornea is more strongly positive in adult animals, whereas the intensity of the reaction of the iris in newborn and adult guinea pigs is almost identical.     

Glucose effect on respiration: possible mechanism for capacitation in guinea pig spermatozoa.

Guinea pig sperm respiration was determined in minimal capacitation medium (MCM) with different energy sources. The ZO2 observed for spermatozoa suspended in media containing pyruvate and lactate was 35.7 +/- 5.9, pyruvate alone, 27.9 +/- 3.8 and D-glucose alone 3.4 +/- 1.1. When D-glucose was added to spermatozoa rapidly respiring in media containing pyruvate as the only exogenous energy source, an immediate suppression in respiration was observed. Further reduction was caused by continued addition of D-glucose. Fructose and mannose also produced a suppression in respiratory rate. However, lactose, fucose, sucrose, L-glucose, and galactose did not alter the respiratory rate. The suppression of respiration by metabolizable sugars is paralleled by a suppression of acrosome reaction in guinea pig spermatozoa. The possibility that suppression of respiration is the mechanism for retardation of capacitation and the subsequent acrosome reaction by D-glucose and other metabolizable sugars is suggested.     

Normal electrocardiogram in guinea pig

For establishing normal mean values of the parameters of the electrocardiographic curve and their standard deviations 50 male guinea pigs were studied. The directions of temporary vectors of atrial (AP) and ventricular (AQRS) depolarization times, and ventricular repolarization time (AT) were determined, and the position of the heart was evaluated. In all animals limb leads I, II, III, aVR, aVL, aVF were used, and in 38 animals additionally the precordial leads V1, V2, V3, V4, V5, V6 were applied. The investigations were done by a non-invasive method with a specially designed plate making possible immobilization of the animals in supine position under general anaesthesia with urethane. In 10% of the animals abnormalities were detected in the ECG curve and these guinea pigs were eliminated from further analysis. The investigations showed that, after consideration given to the differences in the ECG curves in relation to man, guinea pigs might be used for preclinical cardiological studies.     

Dermal cryptococcosis in a guinea pig

A case of cryptococcosis in a guinea pig with lesions confined to the dorsum of the nose is described. Results of clinical, postmortem and histological examination are discussed. The diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities and problems of cryptococcosis are mentioned.
