Differences in snake color pattern have been demonstrated to affect behaviors involved in antipredator defense. Snakes with blotched or banded color patterns are concealed when not moving, and tend to rely on concealment and aggression for defense. In contrast, snakes with uniform or striped color patterns are easily seen when stationary, but their speed and direction are difficult to track when moving. They tend to rely on flight for protection. Some snake taxa exhibit ontogenetic change in color pattern, but the behavioral consequences of this change have not been investigated. I present results of a behavioral study in the racer, Coluber constrictor, which has a blotched juvenile color pattern but is uniformly colored as an adult. Hatchling racers were significantly more likely than adults to show aggressive behavior when confronted with a model predator, whereas adults were more likely to flee. This supports the hypothesis that changes in behavior and color pattern are correlated in this species to provide effective antipredator defense at different stages of life history. I also examined sprint speed, which may be an important factor in antipredator defense. Juvenile and adult racers showed a similar relationship between length and speed, a pattern also seen in other species that lack color change. This result suggests that sprint speed is not a causal factor in the evolution of ontogenetic color change.  相似文献

Most phylogeographic studies examine organisms that do not have transcontinental distributions and therefore the genetic and temporal effects of barriers across an entire continent cannot be assessed with respect to a single species. We examined the phylogeographic structure, lineage age, and historical demography using sequences from the mtDNA cytochrome b gene of the widespread North American racer (Coluber constrictor), one of the few abundant transcontinental snakes that occurs throughout many diverse biomes. Our results indicate that this complex is comprised of six lineages differing greatly in geographic extent, with the largest (a central US clade) being approximately 26 times greater than the smallest (a lineage restricted to the Florida Panhandle and nearby portions of adjacent States). Most of the six lineages appear to be separated at previously identified genetic barriers for several vertebrates with similar ranges. Lineage diversification in this species began in the late Miocene, separating populations in the Florida Peninsula from the remainder of the US. Diversification of lineages continued throughout the Pliocene and early Pleistocene. Four of the six lineages occur east of the Mississippi River, with only two distinctly young ( approximately 1.5 mya) lineages found west of the Mississippi River (one occurs west of Continental Divide). All methods of demographic inference, including the mismatch distribution, Fu and Li's D and Tajima's D , and Bayesian skyline plots revealed population expansion occurring in the mid-to-late Pleistocene for every lineage, regardless of size or proximity to formerly glaciated areas. Population expansion for lineages found east of the Mississippi River occurred earlier and was much greater than those found west of the River.  相似文献

We used extracellular recording of the infrared (IR)-sensitive trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons (primary neurons) of a crotaline snake, Trimeresurus flavoviridis, which has very sensitive thermoreceptors, to examine changes in the IR response induced by dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), in vivo.2. The responses in the TG were recorded after each concentration of DMSO (1, 10, and 25%) was administered in the bloodstream.3. At a constant temperature, DMSO dose-dependently potentiated the IR-triggered discharges of IR-sensitive TG neurons in this snake.4. It is suggested that the increased IR response to DMSO is due to its chemical effect, or to an indirect effect via its vasoactive role in the thermoreceptors of IR-sensitive snakes.  相似文献

Hepatozoon priapus n. sp. from Coluber constrictor priapus has robust gamonts with broadly rounded ends, 18.0 x 4.2 microm (17.0-20.0 x 3.5-6.0), with LW 76.4 microm2 (59-105) and L/W 4.31 (2.9-5.4). The nucleus is always present in second quarter of gamont, seldom extend into first quarter but often into third quarter, 6.0 x 3.0 (5.0-7.0 x 2.5-4.0), with LW 17.9 (13.7-21.0). Erythrocyte cytoplasm is always thin, appearing dehemoglobinized, with infected cells always distorted. Infected erythrocytes are much longer and wider than uninfected cells, with longer nuclei. Oocysts are spherical to ovoid, 92.5 x 86.0 (55-123 x 47-115) and L/W 1.08 (1.0-1.3), contain 14.0 (6-31) sporocysts. Sporocysts, which are also spherical to ovoid, 26.3 x 23.3 (19-50 x 16-38), LW 641.2 (320-1,500) and L/W 1.13 (1.0-2.2), contain 12.6 (5-18) sporozoites. Hepatozoon confusus n. sp., also from C. constrictor priapus, has slender gamonts with rounded ends, 15.6 x 4.1 (14.0-17.0 x 3.5-5.0), with LW 64.3 (52-80) and L/W 3.82 (2.8-4.4). The nucleus is always present in second quarter of gamont, commonly extending into first and third quarters, 5.0 x 2.7 (2.5-4.4 x 4.0-6.0), with LW 13.5 (11.0-16.5). Erythrocyte cytoplasm is sometimes thin, appearing partially dehemoglobinized, with infected cells usually distorted. Infected erythrocytes are longer than uninfected cells but similar in width, with erythrocyte nuclei longer. Oocysts are spherical to ovoid, 115.5 x 108.9 (52-278 x 50-278), with L/W 1.06 (1.0-1.2), and contain 25.0 (7-111) sporocysts. Sporocysts are spherical to ovoid, 27.6 x 25.2 (21-38 x 20-33), LW 701.3 (420-1,125) and L/W 1.09 (1.0-1.4), containing 20.2 (12-32) sporozoites.  相似文献

Verapamyl administered to the intestine circulation in the dose evoking no shifts in the arterial and venous resistance or in the vascular capacity, decreased 2- or 3-fold both the constrictor and dilatory responses of the arterial vessels. Against the background of Verapamyl, noradrenaline and isoproterenol did not practically change either capacity or resistance in the veins. Responses of veins to angiotensin II increased 10-fold and more, whereas they were absent after administration of atropine into the intestine circulation. Constrictor and dilatory responses of veins need to a greater extent than the arteries penetration of external calcium ions to their myocytes.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The pulmonary and systemic circulations are not completelyseparated in reptiles and amphibians, so oxygen-rich blood returningfrom the lungs can mix with oxygen-poor blood returning fromthe systemic circuit (cardiac shunts). In these animals, thearterial blood gas composition is determined by both lung ventilationand the cardiac shunt. Therefore, changes in cardiac shuntingpatterns may participate actively in the regulation of arterialblood gases. In turtles the cardiac shunt pattern changes independentlyof ventilation and the cardiac R-L shunt (pulmonary bypass ofsystemic venous blood) is reduced under circumstances wherethe demands on efficient gas exchange are high (hypoxia, hypoxemiaor exercise). We propose, therefore, that the size of cardiacshunts is regulated independently of ventilation and hypothesizethat there exist at least two groups of peripheral chemoreceptorswith different reflex roles.  相似文献

目的观察甘露醇对血循毒蛇咬伤患者肌酸激酶(CK)值的影响,降低和预防横纹肌溶解症及骨筋膜室综合征的发生率。方法将我院2009~2013年血循毒蛇咬伤住院患者104例随机分成两组,A组(观察组)患者入院后3h内开始使用甘露醇125~250ml每12h1次输注作CK预处理;B组(对照组)未使用甘露醇。观察比较两组CK值差异、横纹肌溶解症及骨筋膜室综合征发生率、平均住院天数。结果 A组CK值水平明显低于B组(P0.05);横纹肌溶解症发生率为5%、骨筋膜室综合征发生率为0%、平均住院天数为4.78天,明显低于B组的20.45%、4.55%和6.89天,差异有统计学意义。结论使用甘露醇对CK干预是减少及预防血循毒蛇咬伤后横纹肌溶解症及骨筋膜室综合征的有效措施,对血循毒蛇咬伤无明显禁忌证的患者甘露醇可以常规使用。  相似文献

Our contribution to this symposium is a review of recent modelsand experimental cdata on oxygen homeostasis in vertebrateswith normal intracardiac shunts; i.e., amphibians and reptiles.We focus on the interactions among hemoglobin function, bodytemperature regulation, and cardiovascular shunts under normalconditions (i.e., breathing fresh air at or near sea level)and during external hypoxia (e.g., altitude, burrows) and internalhypoxia (e.g., anemia, hemorrhage). Mathematical models andexperimental data suggest that animals with venous admixturefrom cardiovascular shunts will show biphasic arterial and mixedvenous Po2 responses to warming; i.e., first increasing andthen, as the dissociation curve shifts too far to the right,decreasing. This has implications for many physiological functionsincluding oxygen consumption by tissues, control of breathing,as well as preferred body temperature and its regulation. Seven patients in acute exacerbation of chronic respiratory failure were given 24·5% and later 28% oxygen through Ventimasks. The mean increases in arterial PO2 were 11 and 21 mm. Hg while breathing 24·5% and 28% oxygen respectively compared with control values while breathing air. Associated increases in arterial PCO2 were 4 and 8 mm. Hg, respectively. In five of the patients these increases in inspired oxygen concentration resulted in useful increases in tissue oxygen supply without significant deterioration in ventilation, but in two patients arterial PCO2 rose excessively and artificial ventilation was required.  相似文献

Stress and physical exertion may affect the physiology and behavior of wildlife during and after capture, and consequently, survival following release. Such effects may reduce the quality and quantity of the data obtained from captured wildlife. We captured spectacled eiders (Somateria fischeri), a species listed as threatened under the United States Endangered Species Act, in western Alaska, USA, during spring 2018 for surgical implantation of satellite transmitters. We evaluated the efficacy of midazolam, a benzodiazepine sedative given at capture, to reduce stress and physical exertion. We dosed spectacled eiders with either midazolam (5 mg/ml, = 2.2 mg/kg intramuscular; n = 20) or saline (0.7 ml intramuscular; n = 20) at the point of capture. We assessed sedation level and collected blood samples upon arrival to the field surgery site and at anesthetic induction. We found that midazolam reduced mean corticosterone concentration by 29% and median lactate concentration by 30.3% at the mean arrival time (42 min post-dosing) relative to the control group. These effects had abated by the mean induction time (99 min post-dosing). Unexpectedly, blood pH was reduced in the midazolam treatment relative to controls at both arrival and induction, which likely resulted from sedative-induced respiratory depression that was easily treated with intubation and mechanical ventilation, and administration of the reversal drug, flumazenil. Low blood pH was not associated with negative post-surgical outcomes, as had been found in spectacled eiders with acidosis caused by anaerobic metabolism typical of physical exertion. Intramuscular injection of midazolam in the field effectively reduced stress and physical exertion in spectacled eiders prior to surgical implantation of transmitters. © 2021 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Analyses of the histology, histochemistry, and ultrastructre of the Harderian gland of Coluber viridiflavus prove the gland to be compound acinar and to produce a seromucous secretion. Acinar cells (type I) contain secretory granules that are composite, consisting ultrastructurally of three distinct parts that are sharply separated. They are similar to the “special secretory granules” described in the cells of the Harderian gland of the lizard Podarcis s. sicula. Some acini of the most anterior and posterior parts of the gland are mucous. Acinar cells (type II) of this type contain secretory granules that are Alcian blue/PAS positve. At the ultrastructural level, they appear homogeneous and of low density, characteristic of mucous secretions. These mucus-secreting anterior and posterior parts of the Harderian gland may by considered as regions of intial differentiation of the anterior and posterior lacrimal galnds.  相似文献

The thermal dependence of enzyme kinetic parameters has beenpresented as an indicator of species’ thermal optima andtolerance limits. Previous studies suggest the relationshipbetween temperature and the apparent Michaelis–Mentenconstant (Km) of an enzyme system can be used to predict wholeplant success at specific temperatures. The apparent Kmfor glutathionereductase (EC 1.6.4.2; GR) (oxidized glutathione as substrate)extracted from leaves of American sloughgrass (Beckmannia syzigachneSteud.), tufted hairgrass (Deschampsia caespitosa L.), tallfescue (Festuca arundinaceae Schreb. ‘Titan’), andmaize (Zea mays L.), was determined over a range of temperatures(1–40 °C). For all species, minimum apparent KmforGR was observed at 1 °C, and Kmvalues increased as temperatureincreased. The apparent Kmvalues differed among all speciesat the lower temperatures (1–15 °C), but were similarat higher temperatures. The enzyme from tufted hairgrass hadthe lowest apparent Kmat low temperatures (<15 °C), followedin increasing order by American sloughgrass, tall fescue andmaize. Our experimental system failed to reproduce thermal kineticwindow profiles similar to those reported elsewhere. With respectto the enzyme systems reported here, results suggest that thesecool-season grasses can be ranked as more to less eurythermicwithin the temperature range from 1 to 15 °C. Astroglia are a major cell type in the brain and play a key role in many aspects of brain development and function. In the adult brain, astrocytes are known to intimately ensheath blood vessels and actively coordinate local neural activity and blood flow. During development of the neural retina, blood vessel growth follows a meshwork of astrocytic processes. Several genes have also been implicated in retinal astrocytes for regulating vessel development. This suggests a role of astrocytes in promoting angiogenesis throughout the central nervous system. To determine the roles that astrocytes may play during brain angiogenesis, we employ genetic approaches to inhibit astrogliogenesis during perinatal corticogenesis and examine its effects on brain vessel development. We find that conditional deletion from glial progenitors of orc3, a gene required for DNA replication, dramatically reduces glial progenitor cell number in the subventricular zone and astrocytes in the early postnatal cerebral cortex. This, in turn, results in severe reductions in both the density and branching frequency of cortical blood vessels. Consistent with a delayed growth but not regression of vessels, we find neither significant net decreases in vessel density between different stages after normalizing for cortical expansion nor obvious apoptosis of endothelial cells in these mutants. Furthermore, concomitant with loss of astroglial interactions, we find increased endothelial cell proliferation, enlarged vessel luminal size as well as enhanced cytoskeletal gene expression in pericytes, which suggests compensatory changes in vascular cells. Lastly, we find that blood vessel morphology in mutant cortices recovers substantially at later stages, following astrogliosis. These results thus implicate a functional requirement for astroglia in promoting blood vessel growth during brain development.  相似文献

Abstract The knowledge of dispersal is essential to understand the ecology of any species, since population dynamics, spatial distribution and genetic structure are closely tied to patterns of movement. In this paper we estimate dispersal patterns in natural populations of the endangered snake Boa constrictor occidentalis (Serpentes, Boidae), using allozymes as genetic markers. Blood samples were obtained from a total of 120 adult individuals of nine localities from two areas, Sobremonte and Pocho, in Argentina. Only four out of a total of 24 loci were polymorphic: 6‐Pgdh‐1, Cat‐1, Ldh and Hp. The values of expected and observed mean heterozygosities, the percentage of polymorphic loci and mean number of alleles per locus for each population confirm the low levels of genetic variability in this snake. FST and Nem mean values were 0.0089 and 46.1 for Sobremonte and 0.0379 and 7.46 for Pocho, indicating important levels of gene flow. A comparison of FST between genders in both areas suggests a male‐biased dispersal, which could be explained by the characteristics of the mating system: males carry out an active mate search of receptive females, and philopatry could be selected in females due to the benefits of the familiarity with the natal area in the use of local resources.  相似文献

The green turtle, Chelonia mydas, is an endangered marine chelonian with a circum-global distribution. Reference blood parameter intervals have been published for some chelonian species, but baseline hematology, biochemical, and blood gas values are lacking from the Galapagos sea turtles. Analyses were done on blood samples drawn from 28 green turtles captured in two foraging locations on San Cristóbal Island (14 from each site). Of these turtles, 20 were immature and of unknown sex; the other eight were males (five mature, three immature). A portable blood analyzer (iSTAT) was used to obtain near immediate field results for pH, lactate, pO2, pCO2, HCO3, Hct, Hb, Na, K, iCa, and Glu. Parameter values affected by temperature were corrected in two ways: (1) with standard formulas; and (2) with auto-corrections made by the iSTAT. The two methods yielded clinically equivalent results. Standard laboratory hematology techniques were employed for the red and white blood cell counts and the hematocrit determination, which was also compared to the hematocrit values generated by the iSTAT. Of all blood analytes, only lactate concentrations were positively correlated with body size. All other values showed no significant difference between the two sample locations nor were they correlated with body size or internal temperature. For hematocrit count, the iSTAT blood analyzer yielded results indistinguishable from those obtained with high-speed centrifugation. The values reported in this study provide baseline data that may be useful in comparisons among populations and in detecting changes in health status among Galapagos sea turtles. The findings might also be helpful in future efforts to demonstrate associations between specific biochemical parameters and disease.  相似文献
