Groups of juvenile chum salmon were reared on food that was either dispersed throughout, or localized in one area of, the rearing tank. Groups receiving localized food displayed more aggression than those receiving dispersed food. This led to differences in growth, with fish reared on localized food having greater individual growth variability, i.e. growth depensation. However, after several months of rearing in these different feeding/social environments, fish reared on dispersed food were just as aggressive when first exposed to localized food as were fish reared on localized food. Furthermore, in competitive contests between fish of the two rearing histories, those reared on dispersed food were just as likely to become dominant as those reared on localized food. These results suggest that the behavioural development of aggressiveness is not amenable to alteration by manipulation of food distribution.  相似文献

This study measured the effects of regular and irregular intervals between feeds on the growth performance of juvenile Gasterosteus aculeatus . The experimental period was 21 days at 14) C and photoperiod of 10L: 14D. The fish were housed individually. The control fish received a constant ration every day. Fish on a constant interval were fed on days 1, 5, 9, 13, 17 and 21. Fish on a random regime were fed with the same average interval between feedings, but the interval varied randomly between 1 and 5 days. The rations were calculated so that over the 21-day period, all fish were supplied with the same total quantity of food. The two ration levels were: 2% (maintenance ration) and 6% of the initial body weight per day. At a given ration, the feeding interval had no significant effect on specific growth rate, RNA/DNA ratio and lipid contents. The percentage dry matter was slightly, but significantly lower in treatment groups than in the control group. Groups receiving a mean 2% ratio consumed all the food supplied. At a mean ration of 6%, the control group ate 100%, the regular interval group 95·4% and the irregular interval 98·3% of the total food supplied. For the temporal patterns of feeding used, the fish were able to adjust their food intake, when food become available, to compensate for short periods of food deprivation and maintain their growth performance except for a decrease in dry matter content.  相似文献

Compensatory growth responses of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were studied by examining food intake and growth of individual fish held within groups that were switched between regimes that involved full and restricted feeding. Restricted feeding led to marked interindividual variability in food intake, probably as a result of the establishment of feeding hierarchies. This disparity in food acquisition was reflected in highly heterogeneous growth amongst the fish fed low rations. When fish were transferred from restricted to full rations, they became hyperphagic and displayed high rates of growth. Growth compensation was most marked amongst those fish which had shown the poorest growth during the period of feed restriction. These results suggest that the feeding hierarchies established under feed restriction did not persist, but were rapidly broken down when food became increasingly available, enabling the previously suppressed fish to gain access to food and to display rapid growth.  相似文献

Growth of the subordinates (small flounder) was markedly suppressed by the presence of the dominants (large flounder). Dominants did not significantly suppress the overall food intake of the subordinates, but exhibited high aggressive attacking on the subordinates and consequently inhibited their activity. Size dominant interactions had little influence on the aggressive behaviour, feeding, activity and growth of the dominants. Results substantiated the hypothesis that the retardation in the growth of the subordinate flounder was attributed to the physiological costs of 'stress' by the aggression of the dominants. Individual differences in aggressive behaviour, feeding and activity were at least partly responsible for the growth depensation of the juvenile flounder. The dominants could not effectively defend the food in excess and disproportional food acquisition of the subordinates and dominants was not the primary mechanism responsible for the size hierarchy effect. In culture, size grading of the early juvenile flounder could markedly improve the growth and survival and thus possibly increase the overall biomass production of the flounder.  相似文献

The effects of food ration and social context, as well as possible interactions, on the antipredator behaviour of juvenile rainbow trout Onchorhynchus mykiss were investigated in a pair of laboratory studies. In experiment 1, pairs of dominant and subordinate O. mykiss were exposed to conspecific alarm cues when maintained under high or low food rations. Under high food rations, dominant individuals responded to predation risk, whereas subordinates used the opportunity to feed. Under low food ration, however, the opposite pattern was observed, where subordinates responded to predation cues and dominants did not. Experiment 2 consisted of performing the same experiment, however separating the dominant and subordinate O. mykiss 3 h before testing. When tested separately, dominant and subordinate individuals did not differ in their responses to alarm cues, regardless of food ration. These results demonstrate that there is a complex interaction between current energy status and social context on decision making by prey animals.  相似文献

Three groups of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss , (initial weight 40 g) were fed one of three rations (low, medium or high) for 73 days. Consumption by individual fish within the three ration groups was measured on four occasions (days 27, 55, 64 and 72) using radiography. Food intake by individual fish varied between days and this variability was expressed using the coefficient of variation (CV). Dominant fish within each ration group were defined as individuals with the greater share of the group meal and these fish had low CVs for food intake indicating relatively little variation in daily consumption. By contrast, the fish which had consumed a low mean proportion of the group meal displayed high CVs for food intake, indicating considerable variability in the sizes of individual meals consumed by these fish. As group ration increased, the range of meal sizes and individual CVs in daily feeding decreased, suggesting that the strength of the feeding hierarchy and the variability in individual consumption decreased as food availability increased. It is suggested that radiography can be used to assess social relationships within groups of fish allowing the assessment of feeding hierarchies in larger groups of fish than would be possible by observational techniques.  相似文献

Synopsis The relationships between food availability, consumption and growth were analyzed from the onset of feeding to an age of 90 days in three cyprinid species. Fish were held at 20 ± 0.5° C and given two (three) constant rations of approximately 30, (40) or 100% dry body weight (dbw) ind-1 day-1. Food consisted of living zooplankton, the size of which correlated with fish size. At high food densities consumption rates decreased rapidly with fish size in all three species. At reduced rations, fish consumed most of the food offered until they were larger than 10 mg dbw. In all species and at each feeding level daily rations consumed increased allometrically with body size. Respiration rate, expressed as routine metabolic rate differed insignificantly between the three species. At high ration levels, growth rates of small bleak, Alburnus alburnus, were distinctly lower than those of roach, Rutilus rutilus, and blue bream, Abramis ballerus. At low food supply all three species grew at similar rates. Assimilation efficiency at low food conditions was approximately twice that of the well-fed groups. If the caloric equivalents of oxygen consumption as measured in well-fed fish are applied to fish fed at low rations their energy budgets do not balance. This indicates the limitations of fish larvae in the partitioning of energy for growth or activity at such conditions.  相似文献

The interactions between dominance status, feeding rate and growth in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, were analyzed using published data on experimental populations. There was a positive correlation between metabolic expenditure and food intake in both dominant and subordinate fish, but dominants obtained a greater intake for a given expenditure than did subordinates. Subordinates that adopted a high–return/high–cost foraging strategy actually expended more energy than they acquired, whereas those that minimized energy expenditure obtained a net energy gain. This led to the surprising finding that the growth rate of subordinates was negatively correlated with food intake.  相似文献

The feeding behavior of 16 adult female rhesus monkeys living in three captive social groups was observed. Estimates of relative food intake, feeding rate, and location of feeding in relation to food sources were compared between females of different dominance ranks. Higher-ranking females had greater access to feeding sites and were supplanted or threatened less frequently while feeding than subordinates. However, no consistent differences in estimates of total intake were found between females of high and females of low rank. The effects of dominance on feeding behavior were most pronounced in the group receiving the least food relative to estimates of overall group nutritional requirements. Higher-ranking females, both over the long term and during the study period, tended to produce more surviving offspring. The effects of dominance on reproductive performance appeared to be less related to food intake than to competitive and aggressive interactions, potentially resulting in higher levels of stress for subordinates.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of body size and food ration on over-winter survival of age-0 Atlantic cod. Cod were divided into two groups based on standard length (large=76.95±1.10 mm SL; small=57.65±1.02 mm SL; mean±1 SE) and wet weight (large=4.02± 0.21 g; small=1.52±0.09 g). Replicate tanks (n=2) of 10 large and 10 small cod were exposed to one of two food rations (0.25% and 1.0% body weight day-1) for the entire experiment (December to June). Tanks were examined daily for mortalities and feeding was adjusted accordingly. The experiment was run under ambient light and seawater conditions. All but large age-0 cod exposed to the low food ration grew over the course of the experiment. The specific growth rate (SGR) of small cod was significantly higher (0.2425% wet weight day-1) than that of the large fish (0.0443% wet weight day-1). Food ration had no significant influence on SGR or over-winter survival. Significantly more of the large age-0 cod survived the winter (58.5% of those originally introduced) compared to the smaller fish (14%). Our results are consistent with those from studies of several other fish species, and are discussed in relation to the ecology of age-0 cod, and their potential use in aquaculture in Newfoundland.  相似文献

Somatic growth and reproductive investment in female Tanichthys albonubes (Cyprinidae) individually cultured at the laboratory from larva to sexual maturity were examined under low, medium, and satiation food rations. All the 72‐day post‐hatch fish reached sexual maturity under all rations. The standard length, wet body mass, dry ovarian mass, dry liver mass, condition factor, energy content, and number of vitellogenic oocytes were all increased with ration levels. However, food conversion efficiency decreased with ration. There were no significant differences in total number of oocytes per female between rations. The species is a continuous batch‐spawner. The size‐frequency distributions of oocyte diameters showed a continuous pattern, ranging from 0.03 to 0.70 mm, at different rations. The proportion of energy intake allocated to growth decreased with ration levels. Only 3.29–4.60% of energy intake was stored in the ovary. These biological and energetic characteristics allow this fish to reach first maturity with low food intake, although it produced fewer vitellogenic oocytes at lower rations. We studied changes in body mass in response to priority to foodaccess by repeatedly weighing free-living willow tits in dominance-structuredflocks. Priority to food access did not correlate to eitheracquisition rate or net turnover of body reserves, but subordinateswith low food availability had larger body reserves than dominants.Removal experiments suggest a causal relationship between rankand the size of reserves. Body reserves of subordinates decreasedwhen their access to food increased after the dominant was removed.Low variability in body mass of subordinates shows that theydo not maintain large reserves in response to uncertain acquisitionof food. Rather, large reserves of low-rank individuals couldserve as insurance for conditions with increasing requirements.Under such conditions, dominants are more likely to claim theirpriority to food, and subordinates would not be able to increasetheir body reserves by feeding.  相似文献

The effects of genetic and environmental factors on aggression and feeding hierarchies were studied using X-radiography to measure food intake by hatchery-reared individuals of two strains (Hammerfest and Svalbard) of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus . A reduction in food rations and/or water current speed increased intraspecific aggression, and both factors led to increased interindividual variability in food intake, increasing the coefficient of variation (CV). Following a return to pre-manipulation conditions, CVs decreased to their original level. In control groups, CVs and share of group meals were stable throughout the experiment. The increase in CVs following manipulation was the result of a small number of dominant individuals obtaining a high share of the meal. Restriction in food ration affected share of meals, specific growth rates and the frequencies of non-feeding fish, while reductions in water current speed affected only share of meals. Feeding hierarchies were size-dependent in the control groups. In contrast, no relationships between body weight and feeding rank were evident in groups in which food ration or water current speed were reduced. A small, but consistent, difference was revealed in feeding hierarchy responses between the two strains.  相似文献

The effect of random fluctuations in daily ration on the growth performance of individual juvenile three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus was studied in experiments lasting 21 days at 14°C and a photoperiod of 10L:14D. Two mean ration levels were used: a maintenance ration of 2%, and a high ration of 6% of initial body weight per day. For experimental fish, the daily ration varied randomly about the required mean value with a coefficient of variation of 33%. The controls received a constant daily ration. The experiment was replicated in winter (Dec.-Jan.) and spring (Mar.-Apr.). At a given ration, there was no significant difference between the specific growth rates of fish receiving constant or varying ration. Neither the final dry weight, final body water content nor final lipid content (% dry weight) differed significantly. As expected, ration had a significant effect on growth rate, final dry weight and body lipid and water content. There was a significant difference in mean growth rate between the winter and spring replicates. The growth rates observed in these experiments were compared with those predicted from a previously described empirical growth model developed for sticklebacks fed constant rations. Groups of four Atlantic salmon parr were established and the dominant individual identified. Feeding responses were then observed in the remaining (subordinate) fish housed in one of three conditions: in the same compartment as the dominant fish (full exposure), separated from it by a transparent partition (visual exposure) or behind an opaque partition (isolated). Subordinate parr in the full exposure condition responded to and ate fewer food pellets than did the dominant fish. However, subordinate parr in the visual exposure condition and in the isolation condition fed actively, indicating that neither visual intimidation nor long-term stress-induced reduction of appetite were responsible for the reduced food intake of subordinate parr in direct contact with dominants. Dominant parr and subordinates in the visual exposure condition, but not subordinates in the exposed condition, moved further from their feeding station when attacking food items that were contested by a competitor compared with the distance moved for uncontested items. The presence of a competitor therefore forced both dominant and visually exposed subordinates to pay higher costs while foraging.  相似文献

The development and severity of fin damage was examined in groups of juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss of different strength of feeding hierarchies. The development of dorsal and caudal fin damage over time was compared between four groups fed different ration levels (0·25, 0·5, 1·0 and 1·5% body weight day−1) and between individuals of different feeding rank within each group. Dominance hierarchies were assessed from repeated daily measurements of food consumption of individuals using radiography. The feeding and growth data indicated that the strength of the social hierarchy weakened with increasing ration. Caudal fin damage developed with time in all groups whereas dorsal fin damage developed only under limited rations. The severity of both dorsal and caudal fin damage was significantly dependent on the ration size fed to the group, with lower ration groups sustaining more fin damage. The severity of dorsal fin erosion was greater than for the caudal fin. Within the two lower ration groups, subordinate fish suffered the most dorsal fin damage. The results suggested that the severity of dorsal fin damage within groups of juvenile rainbow trout can be used as an indicator of hierarchy Strength.  相似文献

The growth rates of rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri , which ranged in size from 0.6 to 5.2 g and were provided rations of three different sizes, were measured during a 15-day study. The relative maintenance rations (food/gram of fish at zero growth rate) decreased with increases of fish size. Consequently when fish were kept at low ration levels the growth rates and gross efficiencies of food conversion of 'large' fish were greater than those of 'small' fish. However, as ration level increased, the effects of fish size grew at the same rates or slower than small fish. With increases of ration to the highest levels (9–12%/day) gross efficiency values for large fish began to decline while those for small fish continued to increase.  相似文献

To investigate differences in behaviour associated with social rank and environmental conditions, a comparison was made between swimming and feeding activities of dominant and subordinate angelfish, housed in groups of six, with those of angelfish housed singly in identical laboratory aquaria. Subordinate individuals were less active, less ready to feed and consumed less food items than dominants, but their feeding and activity levels were still greater than those displayed by isolated fish used as controls. When fish from each of the above categories were transferred to a novel, identical tank to be tested individually for a 6-day period, little change was observed in previously isolated fish. In contrast, the previous social experience had a marked influence on the behaviour of the other individuals, the effects being related to the social status. The strongest initial response to the new environment was shown by subordinate individuals, with a significant increase in swimming and a significant decrease in feeding compared to the group situation. Subordinates were significantly more active than dominants, who in turn moved more than previously isolated fish. Dominants and subordinates were now similarly reluctant to feed, and their food consumption was less than that of previously isolated fish. With time in the novel environment a significant reduction of swimming activity and a recovery of feeding measures were detected, but levels were still depressed in relation to the group condition, and lower in subordinates than in dominants, indicating the long-lasting effects of the previous social interactions. The results have clear implications for laboratory studies using groups of fish in which social hierarchies may be established prior to individuals being tested singly in a novel environment.  相似文献

We examined the response of growth hormone (GH), total plasma insulin-like growth-factor I (IGF-I), and growth rate to a change in ration in coho salmon. Tanks of individually tagged fish were placed on high, medium, or low ration, and sampled every 2 weeks for 8 weeks to create a range of growth rates. Some fish received non-lethal blood draws, while others were sampled terminally. Plasma IGF-I levels were higher in high ration fish than in low ration fish from 4 weeks after the beginning of experimental diets to the end of the experiment. GH levels were low and similar in all fish after changing rations, except for the fish in the low ration group at week 2. IGF-I was strongly correlated with specific growth rate in weight in terminally sampled fish after 4 weeks. GH did not correlate with growth rate or IGF-I levels. Growth parameters (length, weight, specific growth rates in weight and length, and condition factor) responded to ration. Serial sampling reduced growth rates and hematocrit, but did not change hormone levels. This study shows that IGF-I responds to changed rations within 2-4 weeks in salmonids.  相似文献
