Yucca moths are most well known for their obligate pollination mutualism with yuccas, where pollinator moths provide yuccas with pollen and, in exchange, the moth larvae feed on a subset of the developing yucca seeds. The pollinators, however, comprise only two of the three genera of yucca moths. Members of the third genus, Prodoxus, are the bogus yucca moths and are sister to the pollinator moths. Adult Prodoxus lack the specialized mouthparts used for pollination and the larvae feed on plant tissues other than seeds. Prodoxus larvae feed within the same plants as pollinator larvae and have the potential to influence yucca reproductive success directly by drawing resources away from flowers and fruit, or indirectly by modifying the costs of the mutualism with pollinators. We examined the interaction between the scape-feeding bogus yucca moth, Prodoxus decipiens, and one of its yucca hosts, Yucca filamentosa, by comparing female reproductive success of plants with and without moth larvae. We determined reproductive success by measuring a set of common reproductive traits such as flowering characteristics, seed set, and seed germination. In addition, we also quantified the percent total nitrogen in the seeds to determine whether the presence of larvae could potentially reduce seed quality. Flowering characteristics, seed set, and seed germination were not significantly different between plants with and without bogus yucca moth larvae. In contrast, the percent total nitrogen content of seeds was significantly lower in plants with P. decipiens larvae, and nitrogen content was negatively correlated with the number of larvae feeding within the inflorescence scape. Surveys of percent total nitrogen at three time periods during the flowering and fruiting of Y. filamentosa also showed that larval feeding decreased the amount of nitrogen in fruit tissue. Taken together, the results suggest that although P. decipiens influences nitrogen distribution in Y. filamentosa, this physiological effect does not appear to impact the female components of reproductive success.  相似文献

Summary A number of inhibitors of DNA-, RNA-, and protein synthesis were applied to prothallia of Anemia phyllitidis, and their effects were investigated with regard to cell division and inhibition of antheridium formation (after induction by gibberellin A3). All compounds tested cause a significant inhibition of growth accompanied by teratologies typical for each inhibitor. Only 5-bromouracil proved to be inactive, even at a concentration of 8×10-4m.None of the inhibitors blocked the induction of the biplanar growth form in continuous light.With the exception of 5-bromodeoxyuridine and 5-iododeoxyuridine all the antimetabolites investigated cause a significant lag in antheridium formation. The result of an analysis of this inhibition on the basis of the critical cell number (Schraudolf, 1966a) demonstrates that this time lag is clearly a direct consequence of the retardation of cell division caused by the inhibitors. There is no inhibition of the induction process proper. So therefore it appears highly improbable that antheridium induction in Anemia by gibberellins is based on a specific gene activation in the sense of Jacob and Monod.The results presented in this paper demonstrate that the production of a time lag in the realisation of a process of differentiation or morphogenesis is not sufficient evidence to permit definite conclusions to be drawn about the basic mechanism of induction; the effect of inhibition of cell division caused by the inhibitors must be excluded or at least taken in to account.The possible function of gibberellins as realisators of already present but inactive m-RNA is discussed.5-Bromo- and 5-iododeoxyuridine do not cause a time lag in antheridium formation; both inhibitors, however, cause a deformation of the cell pattern of the antheridia. The degree of this deformation depends on inhibitor concentration as well as on exposure time. Probably a competition exists between these halogensubstituted pyrimidines and thymidine for incorporation into DNA.  相似文献

Summary The effects of destruxin B, a host-specific toxin of Alternaria brassicae that causes black spot disease in oilseed brassicas, were studied on in vitro pollen germination and pollen-tube growth of Brassica campestris var brown sarson, B. juncea, B. napus cvs Westar and Cresor, B. nigra and Sinapis alba. Pollen grains of B. nigra, B. juncea and B. campestris were the most sensitive and those of S. alba the least sensitive to the toxin. Effects of the toxin were also studied on the leaves of these species, and the degree of sensitivity of leaves of different species was comparable to that of their pollen grains. The results on the responses of pollen grains as well as leaves to the toxin are in agreement with the degree of susceptibility/resistance of these species to A. brassicae reported in the literature, indicating that the genes imparting susceptibility/restistance are expressed in the pollen, a prerequisite for pollen selection. Results are also presented which show that the toxin fed to the cut end of isolated inflorescence axis is readily taken up by the developing pollen and results in the inhibition of germination of susceptible pollen. This technique offers a simple and effective method for application of selection pressure to eliminate pollen grains susceptible to the toxin from effecting fertilization.  相似文献

-Glucan synthetase activity has been demonstrated in a Golgi vesicle fraction isolated from pollen tubes ofPetunia hybrida. This-glucan synthetase activity differs from that of most other higher plants in its inability to incorporate [14C]glucose from GDP-[14C]glucose. UDP-[14C]glucose, however, is an appropriate glucose donor for this enzyme. The optimum conditions for this-glucan synthetase activity are: 1 mg Golgi vesicle protein/ml reaction mixture; pH=±8 and a temperature of 25°C. The newly synthesized alkali-insoluble glucan contains-1,3- as well as -1,4-glucosidic linkages.  相似文献

Summary A technique adapting the traditional slide method for quantitative study of periphyton populations is described. A substrate of known area and composition (a microscope slide) is exposed to colonization by periphyton in a body of water. At the end of the exposure time the periphyton is fixed while still on the slide and (as suggested by Bodian) impregnated with protargol. This impregnation reveals clearly all the autotrophic and heterotrophic forms in the periphyton population. A contextualizing image (CI) is a powerful central image of a dream which appears to contextualize (provide a picture-context for) the dreamer's emotion. For instance, dreamers who have experienced any serious traumatic event sometimes dream, I was overwhelmed by a tidal wave. This appears to picture their feeling of terror and/or vulnerability.A scoring system for CIs is examined here and is applied to dreams and daydreams supplied by 40 students. Two raters scoring dreams on a blind basis showed good inter-rater reliability. Recent dreams were shown to have more as well as more intense CIs than recent daydreams; likewise, dreams that stand out had more intense CIs than daydreams that stand out. Students with thin boundaries had more and more intense CIs than students with thick boundaries in their recent dreams and nightmare, but not so clearly in dreams and nightmares that stand out. The emotions judged as contextualized by the powerful images tended towards fear/terror and helplessness/vulnerability in dreams (especially in dreams that stand out) whereas emotions contextualized by images in daydreams showed a wide range with no clusters.  相似文献

Summary The pollination biology as related to divergent post-fire reestablishment strategies was examined during flowering sequences for two years in sympatric populations of Arctostaphylos pringlei and A. glandulosa var. mollis. Arctostaphylos pringlei reestablishes post-fire populations by means of fire-stimulated germination of previously dormant seeds, while A. glandulosa var. mollis resprouts from large subsurface burls. Arctostaphylos pringlei produced more flowers per unit plant size, exhibited faster nectar production and higher nectar concentration, attracted nearly twice the number of pollinator visitations, and set more seed when self-pollinated. This substantiated the hypothesis that in these two species the amount of reproductive energy allocated to flower, nectar, and seed production reflected the relative significance of seeding compared to a resprouting post-fire establishment strategy.  相似文献

Photosynthesis-irradiance (P-E) curves are widely used to describe photosynthetic efficiency and potential. Contemporary models assume maximal photosynthetic quantum yield () at low irradiances. But P-E observations made with both oxygen evolution and carbon uptake techniques show that this is not always the case. Using new and published data in conjunction with modeling exercises, we demonstrate that regardless of the mechanism there can be reductions in at low irradiances that are not readily observable using conventional P-E analyses. We also show that analytical errors, such as inaccurate estimation of dark oxygen consumption or carbon uptake, can markedly affect the structure of -E curves with negligible effect on P-E curve structure. Whether from respiration `corrections' or other mechanisms, these deviations in at low light levels from the maximum quantum yield of photosynthesis (max) can lead to significant errors (> 50%) in the estimation of the linear portion of the P-E curve and ultimately max. Non-linear models of P-E, such as the rectangular hyperbola, quadratic, exponential and hyperbolic tangent that are commonly used to estimate the initial slope () of the P-E curve assume that is maximal at low light levels and therefore can err in the estimation of max when is reduced at low light levels. Using a diverse data set of 622 P-E curves with a total of 7623 points, we show that although model skills are high (r 2 = 0.96 ± 0.05, 0.97 ± 0.04, 0.97 ± 0.04 and 0.97 ± 0.04, respectively), a large fraction of the model-predicted max differ by greater than 10% from true max values (91%, 50%, 82% and 46%, respectively). Data from these observations and modeling exercises lead us to suggest that max be determined by directly estimating the true maximum of a -E curve rather than using the more conventional methodology employing the initial slope of the P-E curve.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The quaternary ammonium compound glycinebetaine has been tested for cryoprotective properties, using isolated spinach thylakoids as a model membrane system. The effect of a 3-h,-20°C freezing regime on different photosynthetic parameters was measured. These parameters were the light-stimulated pH formation and dark pH decay, light-stimulated proton uptake, electron flow through photosystem II, photosystem I and total linear electron flow, and pyocyanine-mediated cyclic photophosphorylation. It was shown that below 100 mM glycinebetaine was superior as a cryoprotectant to sucrose on a molar, a molal and an activity basis. At higher concentrations, glycinebetaine was less efficient in preventing inactivation of thylakoids during freezing than sucrose. These observations are discussed in relation to the permeability of biomembranes to glycinebetaine and the colligative theory of cryoprotection. We investigated the effect of petal-size variation in tall bellflower, Campanula americana, on pollen removal rates, seed set, and pollinator behavior. Pollen removal, seed set, and the behavior of two bee visitors (Bombus and Halictus) were assessed in flowers that had 0%, 50%, or 100% of their petal lobes removed. Pollen removal rates did not differ significantly among the three treatment groups, probably due to the presence of an ineffective (ugly) pollinator (Halictus), which quickly removed pollen from completely reduced flowers. Seed set was significantly positively correlated with petal size. Bumblebees discriminated against reduced flowers, thereby lowering pollen movement to reduced flowers. Halictid bees rarely contacted stigmatic surfaces and thus pollen delivery to reduced flowers was limited. The presence of an ugly pollinator probably obscured the effect of petal reduction on pollen receipt, thus masking the impact of attractive structures on male fitness. Given the positive relationship between seed set and petal size, we caution against ascribing expenditure on attractive structures exclusively to male function. In plants with many olules, expenditure on attractive structures may affect seed set.  相似文献

Summary Although the importance of pollinators has most often been examined in the evolution of floral characters, seed predators may also play a role in shaping floral evolution. In this study, I examined the role of interplant distance, plant size, and flower morphology on Ipomopsis aggregatás (Polemoniaceae) attractiveness to a pre-dispersal seed predator, Hylemya sp. (Anthomyiidae) and to hummingbird pollinators. The attractiveness of I. aggregata individuals to Hylemya was nonlinearly related to interplant distance in experimental arrays. Clumped and highly dispersed plants were preyed upon more frequently than those at intermediate distances. I found no relationship between interplant distance and visitation rates by hummingbird pollinators in these experimental arrays. However, in natural populations studied, clumped plants were more frequently approached by hummingbirds than those growing more widely dispersed. Display size was unrelated to visitation by Hylemya on inflorescences I clipped and maintained as large, small and control. Display size was also unrelated to the total number of visits by hummingbird pollinators to each of these experimental plants, however large display plants were more likely to be visited first in any given visitation sequence. Of various morphological measurements, corolla length showed the strongest positive correlation with Hylemya egg presence. To the extent that plant spacing and morphology is correlated with pollinator visits and ultimate seed set, Hylemya could be choosing flowers optimally, and playing a role in the evolution of floral traits.  相似文献

In many species with animal-pollinated flowers, pollen arrives on the stigma in pulses and late-arriving pollen may be precluded from fertilizing ovules. When seed set per fruit is not pollen limited, the fate of pollen from later cohorts is affected by the time between pollinator visits, variation in pollen tube growth rates, and the amounts of pollen deposited relative to the availability of stigmatic area and unfertilized ovules. In a natural population of Hibiscus moscheutos, we found that consecutive pollinator visits to individual flowers occurred within 15 min of each other in more than half of our observations. We then conducted hand-pollination experiments using equal doses of early and late pollen bearing unique allozyme markers for paternity analysis (each dose was more than sufficient to result in full seed set). When pollen was applied 15 or 30 min after an earlier pollen load, the proportions of seeds sired by late-arriving pollen were reduced by 13–30% and 21–57%, respecitively. A few pollen-tubes from the late pollen load sired seeds even when a large dose of pollen was applied 1–2 h earlier, suggesting that the performance of pollen grains within each cohort was highly variable. The advantage of arriving early was greater when the first pollen load was applied at 0930 hours as compared with 1130 hours. We found no effect of previous pollination on the growth rates of late-arriving pollen-tubes. Taken together, these results demonstrate that pollen from later visits can compete with pollen from earlier visits, but the success of late-arriving pollen typically declines to very low levels after an interval of about 2 h. Given that surplus pollen often arrives on stigmas by mid-morning, we conclude that male reproductive success is more likely to be affected by the timing of pollen dispersal and pollen-tube competitive ability than by the total amount of pollen that is exported from flowers.  相似文献

Summary Previous experiments showed that the sympatric herbs Delphinium nelsonii and Ipomopsis aggregata compete for hummingbird pollination and that deleterious effects of the former species on seed set of the latter involve interspecific pollen transfer. However, seed set was not reduced when pollen of both species was applied simultaneously to I. aggregata stigmas. Hence a competitive effect may require arrival of foreign pollen before conspecific pollen. To explore this possibility we subjected I. aggregata flowers to a competition treatment in which they received D. nelsonii pollen 6 h before I. aggregata pollen, or to a control in which they received only the conspecific pollen. Foreign pollen precedence decreased mean seed set by almost 50%, which is consistent with effects observed in previous experiments. Reduced seed set can be explained by the fact that foreign pollen often caused stigma lobes to close together within 1.5–6 h, reducing subsequent receptivity. Stigma closure was also elicited by conspecific pollen, but not by mechanical stimulation, and was influenced by size of the pollen load and identity of the plant being pollinated.  相似文献

The malting quality of two barley cultivars, Kymppi and Golden Promise, was modified to better meet the requirements of the brewing process. The egl1 gene, coding for fungal thermotolerant endo-1,4--glucanase (EGI, cellulase), was transferred to the cultivars using particle bombardment, and transgenic plants were regenerated on bialaphos selection. Integration of the egl1 gene was confirmed by Southern blot hybridization. The transgenic seeds were screened for the expression of the heterologous EGI. Under the high-pI -amylase promoter, the egl1 gene was expressed during germination. The heterologous enzyme was thermotolerant at 65 °C for 2 h, thus being suitable for mashing conditions. The amount of heterologous EGI produced by the seeds (ca. 0.025% of soluble seed protein), has been shown to be sufficient to reduce wort viscosity by decreasing the soluble -glucan content. A decrease in the soluble -glucan content in the wort improves the filtration rate of beer.  相似文献

Summary Strains of Schizophyllum commune carrying mutations at the B incompatibility locus were crossed to strains with wildtype B alleles to determine the recombinational spectra of the mutations. Summary Fractionation of the rat ovarial tissue homogenate was performed using gel filtration on Sephadex G 200 and by starch gel electrophoresis. The activities hydrolysing l-leucyl--naphthylamide (Leu--NA) and dl-alanyl--naphthylamide (Ala--NA) were determined and partially characterized. Leu--NA was hydrolysed by four separate enzyme activities separated by both methods. Two of them were thiol-activated, one metal-activated and inhibited by EDTA. One was affected by neither metal chelators nor by sulfhydryl reagents. Ala--NA was hydrolysed by the three first-mentioned activities, but not by the last one. In addition, Ala--NA was hydrolysed by two other activities which were totally inhibited by metal chelators. These were clearly separated only using starch gel electrophoresis. The possibilities for the histochemical demonstration of these activities are discussed.  相似文献

Treatment with 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) to promote the flowering of female strobili and to increase seed production in a seed orchard was examined at different times of conebud differentiation for Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora) and Japanese black pine (P. thunbergii), from late August to mid-September 1998. BAP was mixed with lanolin and Vaseline to prepare a paste (BAP, 2000 mg/L), which was used for a terminal bud treatment and also applied in a girdling treatment. The BAP treatment in early September transformed lateral buds on lower branches that would have normally differentiated as male strobili into female strobili. The highest percentages of female flowering branches were 21.1% (red) and 40.5% (black) produced by the terminal bud treatment, while control branch percentages were 5.0% and 7.1%, respectively. Girdling combined with BAP treatment further promoted female flowering branches to 32.3% (red) and 64.3% (black), while those of controls were 8.3% and 9.9%, respectively. Moreover, the numbers of female strobili per female flowering branch were 6 to 11-fold greater than controls. Mature seed cones were harvested in October two years later from which full seeds with a high germination ratio were recovered. Use of BAP treatment is thus highly effective for enhancing seed production in seed orchards of these two pine species.  相似文献

Summary Pinealectomy of house sparrows on 3L:21D (3 h light per 24 h) resulted in a significant increase in the time between the onset of perch-hopping activity and lights on (on) as well as the time between the offset of activity and lights of (off). The daily variance in on and off was also increased following the removal of the pineal gland. On longer light cycles (i.e., 5L:19D; 7L:17D), neither on or off, nor the variance of on or off was different between sham-pinealectomized and pinealectomized sparrows. Upon returning the birds to an ultrashort light cycle, 1L:23D, off, as well as the variance in on and off were again found to be significantly larger in the pinealectomized birds when compared to sham-operated controls. These results indicate that the effects of pinealectomy on the entrained rhythm of locomotor activity are most pronounced when birds are exposed to a weak entraining agent, such as an ultrashort light: dark cycle. In view of the observation that pinealectomy can alter the phase relationship between activity onset and offset, it is suggested that the pineal gland may be involved in the coupling of the oscillators that regulate activity onset and offset.  相似文献

InEchinops the flowers are surrounded by several scales and initiated in an acropetal and spiral succession on a cone-like inflorescence axis (Figs. 1–6). The floral organs originate in the following sequence: petals—stamens—carpels—pappus. The petals arise from a meristematic rim and therefore are already interconnected when they arise as primordia. This sympetalous zone remains rather inconspicuous for a long period, but eventually, the elongated corolla tube is formed through intercalary growth in a ring zone. Thereby, the stamens are moved upwards and form ledges on the corolla tube (Fig. 34). In the inferior ovary the usual zones of the typical angiospermous gynoecium can be distinguished, namely a synascidiate, symplicate and hemisymplicate zone. The ovule is borne on carpellary tissue.

A method for regenerating whole plants from nodal (axillary bud) cultures of seedlings was developed for flowering dogwood (Cornus florida L.). The seed source significantly influenced the rate of proliferation, although cultures initiated from each of the seven mother trees produced some shoots. Woody plant medium (WPM) was superior to either Murashige and Skoog or Schenk and Hildebrandt basal medium. 6-Benzyladenine (BA) at 2.2 or 4.4 m stimulated the generation of significantly more useable shoots (1 cm) compared to all other concentrations (0.5–22.5 m tested. Thidiazuron (TDZ) at 0.6 and 1.1 m supported proliferation, but strongly inhibited shoot elongation. TDZ initiated cultures transferred to medium containing 4.4 m BA produced usable shoots after five additional subcultures. Shoots generated adventitious roots when exposed to either a 12-h pulse of relatively high concentrations (246–1230 m or continuous lower concentrations (0.5–49.0 m of indolebutyric acid (IBA) for longer periods. Microshoots produced the significantly greatest number of roots when subjected to 4.9 m IBA in WPM over a 4-week period. Whole plants were acclimatized to the laboratory conditions and subsequently to the greenhouse. The methodology described here should be useful in a breeding program by supplying multiple copies of unique, recombinant genotypes.  相似文献
