The isotypes of sarcoplasmic Ca2+ binding protein (SCP) were purified from shrimp tail muscle. SCP exists in a dimeric form. One sample of shrimp contained only alpha A chain, whereas another contained alpha B and beta chains, and a heterodimer of alpha B beta which was not analyzed precisely. The amino acid sequences of the two alpha chains were determined. The two alpha chains are composed of 190 and 192 amino acid residues, respectively. The sequences of the two alpha chains differed in only four amino acids out of 192 residues. The sequences indicate that the alpha chain has three Ca2+-binding sites which are common to EF-hand type Ca2+-binding protein. In the absence of added Ca2+ and Mg2+, the amounts of bound Ca2+ in alpha A, alpha B, and beta chains were 3.0, 3.3, and 2.4 mol/22,000 g protein, respectively. Thus, it is suggested that all three isotypes of shrimp SCP have three Ca2+-binding sites which have high affinity to Ca2+. The sequence homology of shrimp SCP with other EF-hand type Ca2+-binding proteins is very low. The protein having the greatest homology with this SCP was cod parvalbumin; the sequence homology is 18%.  相似文献

The highly polymorphic major histocompatibility complex class II (MHCII) polypeptides assemble in the ER with the assistance of invariant chain (Ii) chaperone. Ii binds to the peptide-binding pocket of MHCII heterodimers. We explored the mechanism how MHCII subunits attach to Ii. Expression with single alpha or beta subunits from three human HLA and two mouse H2 class II isotypes revealed that Ii co-isolates predominantly with the alpha polypeptide. Co-isolation with alpha chain requires the groove binding Ii-segment and depends on M91 of Ii. Immunoprecipitation of Ii from pulse chase labeled cells showed sequential assembly of alpha and beta chains.  相似文献

In the American lobster, Homarus americanus, oxygen is transported by a hemocyanin that is composed 2 x 6 subunits. N-terminal sequencing show the presence of three distinct subunit types (alpha, beta and gamma). We cloned the cDNA of one of these subunits that belong to the alpha-type. It encodes a hemocyanin subunit of 654 amino acids with a molecular mass of 84.8 kDa, which is synthesized in the hepatopancreas. Phylogenetic analyses of the crustacean hemocyanin sequences show two well-separated clades, which correspond to the alpha and gamma-type subunits. Sequences of beta-type subunits are still unknown. The gamma-sequences have evolved about 15% faster than the alpha-subunits, consistent with the proposed conservative function of the latter. Under the assumption of a molecular clock we calculated that alpha- and gamma-subunits split about 214 +/- 14 million years ago, suggesting their divergence only in the decapod Crustacea.  相似文献

NAD-specific isocitrate dehydrogenase from pig heart is composed of three dissimilar subunits present in the native enzyme as 2 alpha:1 beta: 1 gamma, with a tetramer being the smallest form of complete enzyme. The role of these subunits has been explored using affinity labeling. Specifically labeled subunits are separated and then recombined with unmodified subunits to form dimers. Recombination of beta or gamma subunits modified by the isocitrate analogues, 3-bromo-2-ketoglutarate and 3,4-didehydro-2-ketoglutarate, with unmodified alpha subunit led to the same activity in the dimer as when unmodified beta or gamma was combined with alpha. Contrastingly, modification of alpha with these isocitrate analogues led to loss in activity either alone or when recombined with beta or gamma. Hence, the isocitrate site on alpha is required for catalytic activity but the isocitrate sites on beta or gamma are not necessary for the activity of the functional dimer. Reaction of isolated subunits with 3-bromo-2-ketoglutarate shows that alpha and the alpha beta dimer are modified at about the same rate as holoenzyme, suggestive of similarity of the isocitrate site in native enzyme and in isolated active entities containing alpha subunit; in contrast, beta and gamma subunits react more slowly. Modification by the 2',3'-dialdehyde derivative of the allosteric effector, ADP, led to loss of activity in reconstituted dimers, independent of which subunit was modified. Reaction of isolated subunits with the dialdehyde derivative of ADP is slow compared to the initial reaction with native enzyme, indicating differences in the effects of ADP on intact enzyme and subunits. The ADP sites on all subunits may thus be important in intersubunit interactions, which in turn modulate catalytic activity.  相似文献

The tubulin molecule is a heterodimer composed of two polypeptide chains, designated alpha and beta; both alpha and beta exist in numerous isotypic forms, which differ in their assembly and drug binding properties. 2-(4-Fluorophenyl)-1-(2-chloro-3, 5-dimethoxyphenyl)-3-methyl-6-phenyl-4(1H)-pyridinone (IKP-104) is an antimitotic compound which inhibits polymerization and induces depolymerization of microtubules [Mizuhashi, F., et al. (1992) Jpn. J. Cancer Res. 83, 211]. Since the previous work was undertaken with isotypically unfractionated tubulin, we have investigated the interactions of IKP-104 with the isotypically purified tubulin dimers (alpha beta(II), alpha beta(III), and alpha beta(IV)). We find that IKP-104 binds to alpha beta(II) and alpha beta(III) at two classes of binding sites. However, affinities for each class of site are much weaker for alpha beta(III) than for alpha beta(II). Interestingly, the low-affinity site on alpha beta(IV) was not detectable. Its high-affinity site was weaker than those of either alpha beta(II) or alpha beta(III). In a pattern consistent with these results, IKP-104 inhibited assembly better with alpha beta(II) than with the other two dimers. Higher concentrations of IKP-104 induced formation of spiral aggregates from alpha beta(II) and alpha beta(III) but not from alpha beta(IV). Our results suggest that the interaction of IKP-104 with tubulin isotypes is very complex: alpha beta(II) and alpha beta(III) differ quantitatively in their interaction with IKP-104, and alpha beta(IV)'s interaction differs both quantitatively and qualitatively from those of the other two dimers.  相似文献

Correlations between the energetics of cooperativity and quaternary structural probes have recently been made for the intermediate ligation states of Hb [Daugherty et al. (1991) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. US 88, 1110-1114]. This has led to a "molecular code" which translates configurations of the 10 ligation states into switch points of quaternary transition according to a "symmetry rule"; T-->R quaternary structure change is governed by the presence of at least one heme-site ligand on each of the alpha beta dimeric half-molecules within the tetramer [see Ackers et al. (1992) Science 255, 54-63, for summary]. In order to further explore this and other features of the cooperative mechanism, we have used oxygen binding to probe the energetics and cooperativities for the vacant sites of the cyanomet ligation species. We have also probed structural aspects of all eight cyanomet ligation intermediates by means of sulfhydryl reaction kinetics. Our oxygen binding results, obtained from a combination of direct and indirect methods, demonstrate the same combinatorial aspect to cooperativity that is predicted by the symmetry rule. Overall oxygen affinities of the two singly-ligated species (alpha +CN beta)(alpha beta) and (alpha beta +CN)(alpha beta) were found to be identical (pmedian = 2.4 Torr). In contrast, the doubly-ligated species exhibited two distinct patterns of oxygen equilibria: the asymmetric species (alpha +CN beta +CN)(alpha beta) showed very high cooperativity (nmax = 1.94) and low affinity (pmedian = 6.0 Torr), while the other three doubly-ligated species showed diminished cooperativity (nmax = 1.23) and considerably higher oxygen affinity (pmedian = 0.4 Torr). Extremely high oxygen affinities were found for the triply-ligated species (alpha +CN beta +CN)(alpha beta +CN) and (alpha +CN beta +CN)(alpha +CN beta) (pmedian = 0.2 Torr). Their oxygen binding free energies are considerably more favorable than those of the alpha and beta subunits within the dissociated alpha beta dimer, demonstrating directly the quaternary enhancement effect, i.e., enhanced oxygen affinity at the last binding step of tetramer relative to the dissociated protomers. Oxygen binding free energies measured for the alpha subunit within the isolated (alpha beta +CN) dimer and for the beta subunit within the isolated (alpha +CN beta) dimer sum to the free energy for binding two oxygens to normal hemoglobin dimers (-16.3 +/- 0.2 versus -16.7 +/- 0.2, respectively), arguing against cooperativity in the isolated dimer. Correlations were established between cooperative free energies of the 10 cyanomet ligation microstates and the kinetics for reacting their free sulfhydryl groups.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

The interaction of several preparations of purified beta gamma dimers with two types of guanosine-nucleotide-binding-regulatory-(G)-protein alpha subunits, a recombinant bv alpha i3, made in Sf9 Spodoptera frugiperda cells by the baculovirus (bv) expression system, and alpha s, either purified from human erythrocyte Gs-type GTP-binding protein, and activated by NaF/AlCl3, or unpurified as found in a natural membrane, were studied. The beta gamma dimers used were from bovine rod outer segments (ROS), bovine brain, human erythrocytes (hRBC) and human placenta and contained distinct ratios of beta subunits that, upon electrophoresis, migrated as two bands with approximate M(r) of 35,000 and 36,000, as well as distinct complements of at least two gamma subunits each. When tested for their ability to recombine at submaximal concentrations with bv alpha i3, ROS, brain, hRBC and placental beta gamma dimers exhibited apparent affinities that were the same within a factor of two. When bovine brain, placental and ROS beta gamma dimers were tested for their ability to promote deactivation of Gs, brain and placental beta gamma dimers were equipotent and at least 10-fold more potent than that of ROS beta gamma dimers; likewise, brain beta gamma and placental dimers were equipotent in inhibiting GTP-activated and GTP-plus-isoproterenol-activated adenylyl cyclase, while ROS beta gamma dimers were less potent when assayed at the same concentration. The possibility that different alpha subunits may distinguish subsets of beta gamma dimers from a single cell was investigated by analyzing the beta gamma composition of three G proteins, Gs, Gi2 and Gi3, purified to near homogeneity from a single cell type, the human erythrocyte. No evidence for an alpha-subunit-specific difference in beta gamma composition was found. These findings suggests that, in most cells, alpha subunits interact indistinctly with a common pool of beta gamma dimers. However, since at least one beta gamma preparation (ROS) showed unique behavior, it is clear that there may be mechanisms by which some combinations of beta gamma dimers may exhibit selectivity for the alpha subunits they interact with.  相似文献

Tubulin, the 100-kDa subunit protein of microtubules, is a heterodimer of two 50-kDa subunits, alpha and beta. Both alpha and beta subunits exist as numerous isotypic forms. There are four isotypes of beta-tubulin in bovine brain tubulin preparations; their designations and relative abundances in these preparations are as follows: beta I, 3%; beta II, 58%; beta III, 25%; and beta IV, 13%. We have previously reported the preparation of monoclonal antibodies specific for beta II and beta III (Banerjee, A., Roach, M. C., Wall, K. A., Lopata, M. A., Cleveland, D. W., and Luduena, R. F. (1988) J. Biol. Chem. 263, 3029-3034; Banerjee, A., Roach, M. C., Trcka, P., and Luduena, R. F. (1990) J. Biol. Chem. 265, 1794-1799). We here report the preparation of a monoclonal antibody specific for beta IV. By using this antibody together with those specific for beta II and beta III, we have prepared isotypically pure tubulin dimers with the composition alpha beta II, alpha beta III, and alpha beta IV. We have found that, in the presence of microtubule-associated proteins, all three dimers assemble into microtubules considerably faster and to a greater extent than does unfractionated tubulin. More assembly was noted with alpha beta II and alpha beta III than with alpha beta IV. When assembly is measured in the presence of taxol (10 microM), little difference is seen among the isotypically purified dimers or between them and unfractionated tubulin. These results indicate that the assembly properties of a tubulin preparation are influenced by its isotypic composition and raise the possibility that the structural differences among tubulin isotypes may have functional significance.  相似文献

Voltage gated Ca(2+) channel (VGCC) auxiliary beta subunits increase membrane expression of the main pore-forming alpha(1) subunits and finely tune channel activation and inactivation properties. In expression studies, co-expression of beta subunits also reduced neuronal Ca(2+) channel regulation by heterotrimeric G protein. Biochemical studies suggest that VGCC beta subunits and G protein betagamma can compete for overlapping interaction sites on VGCC alpha(1) subunits, suggesting a dynamic association of these subunits with alpha(1). In this work we have analyzed the stability of the alpha(1)/beta association under physiological conditions. Regulation of the alpha(1A) Ca(2+) channel inactivation properties by beta(1b) and beta(2a) subunits had two major effects: a shift in voltage-dependent inactivation (E(in)), and an increase of the non-inactivating current (R(in)). Unexpectedly, large variations in magnitude of the effects were recorded on E(in), when beta(1b) was expressed, and R(in), when beta(2a) was expressed. These variations were not proportional to the current amplitude, and occurred at similar levels of beta subunit expression. beta(2a)-induced variations of R(in) were, however, inversely proportional to the magnitude of G protein block. These data underline the two different mechanisms used by beta(1b) and beta(2a) to regulate channel inactivation, and suggest that the VGCC beta subunit can unbind the alpha1 subunit in physiological situations.  相似文献

Pig heart NAD-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase has a subunit structure consisting of alpha 2 beta gamma, with the alpha subunit exhibiting a molecular weight of 39,000 and the beta and gamma each having molecular weights of 41,000. The amino-terminal sequences (33-35 residues) and the cysteinyl peptide sequences have now been determined by using subunits separated by chromatofocusing or isoelectric focusing and electroblotting. Displacement of the N-terminal sequence of the alpha subunit by 11-12 amino acids relative to that of the larger beta and gamma subunits reveals a 17 amino acid region of great similarity in which 10 residues are identical in all three subunits. The complete enzyme has 6.0 free SH groups per average subunit of 40,000 daltons, but yields 15 distinguishable cysteines in isolated tryptic peptides. Six distinct cysteines in sequenced peptides have been located in the alpha subunit. The beta and gamma subunits contain seven and five cysteines, respectively, with tryptic peptides containing three cysteines being common to the beta and gamma subunits. The three subunits appear to be closely related, but beta and gamma are more similar to each other than either is to the alpha subunit. The NAD-specific isocitrate dehydrogenase from pig heart has been shown to have 2 binding sites/enzyme tetramer for isocitrate, manganous ion, NAD+, and the allosteric activator ADP [Colman, R. F. (1983) Pept. Protein Rev. 1, 41-69]. It is proposed that the catalytically active tetrameric enzyme is organized as a dimer of dimers in which the alpha beta and alpha gamma dimers are nonidentical but functionally similar.  相似文献

Presynaptic Ca2+ channels are inhibited by metabotropic receptors. A possible mechanism for this inhibition is that G protein betagamma subunits modulate the binding of the Ca2+ channel beta subunit on the Ca2+ channel complex and induce a conformational state from which channel opening is more reluctant. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed the binding of Ca2+ channel beta and G protein beta subunits on the two separate binding sites, i.e. the loopI-II and the C terminus, and on the full-length P/Q-type alpha12.1 subunit by using a modified mammalian two-hybrid system and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) measurements. Analysis of the interactions on the isolated bindings sites revealed that the Ca2+ channel beta1b subunit induces a strong fluorescent signal when interacting with the loopI-II but not with the C terminus. In contrast, the G protein beta subunit induces FRET signals on both the C terminus and loopI-II. Analysis of the interactions on the full-length channel indicates that Ca2+ channel beta1b and G protein beta subunits bind to the alpha1 subunit at the same time. Coexpression of the G protein increases the FRET signal between alpha1/beta1b FRET pairs but not for alpha1/beta1b FRET pairs where the C terminus was deleted from the alpha1 subunit. The results suggest that the G protein alters the orientation and/or association between the Ca2+ channel beta and alpha12.1 subunits, which involves the C terminus of the alpha1 subunit and may corresponds to a new conformational state of the channel.  相似文献

When phosphorylase kinase from rabbit skeletal muscle was activated by phosphorylation and then cross-linked with 1,5-difluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene at pH 6.8, dimers of beta subunits were formed that were not observed during cross-linking of nonphosphorylated enzyme under the same conditions. The ability to form these dimers was due to phosphorylation of the beta subunit because when enzyme phosphorylated in the alpha and beta subunits was incubated with a protein phosphatase relatively specific for the beta subunit (Ganapathi, M.K., Silberman, S.R., Paris, H., and Lee, E.Y.C. (1981) J. Biol. Chem. 256, 3213-3217), the ability to form the cross-linked beta dimers was lost. Significant amounts of two complexes also judged to be dimers of beta subunits were observed when nonphosphorylated phosphorylase kinase was cross-linked after preincubation with Ca2+ plus Mg2+ ions, after proteolysis by chymotrypsin, or when it was cross-linked at pH 8.2, three conditions known to stimulate the activity of the nonphosphorylated enzyme. From these results, we conclude that 1,5-difluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene can serve as a structural probe for activated states of phosphorylase kinase. The activation is associated with a conformational change in which two beta subunits either move closer together or have a reactive group on one, or both, of them unmasked. Our results suggest that the diverse mechanisms listed above for stimulating phosphorylase kinase activity cause a common conformational change to occur.  相似文献

8-Azido-ATP is a substrate for the ATP synthase in submitochondrial particles with a Vmax equal to 6% of the Vmax with ATP. The Km values for 8-azido-ATP are similar to those for ATP. ATP synthase in submitochondrial particles can bind maximally 2 mol 8-N-ATP or 8-N-ADP per mole and the inhibition of ATP hydrolysis by covalently bound N-ATP or N-ADP is proportional to the saturation of the enzyme with inhibitor, similar to the results obtained with isolated F1. Both 8-N-ATP and 8-N-ADP are bound mainly to the beta subunits and at all levels of saturation the distribution of the label is 77% to the beta and 23% to the alpha subunits. It is proposed that the binding of 8-azido-AXP itself is mainly to the beta subunit, but that part of the nitreno radicals formed during excitation with light reacts with an amino acid of the alpha subunit, due to the location of the binding site at an interface between a beta and an alpha subunit. Partial saturation with 8-N-ATP, under conditions that the concentration of 8-azido-ATP during the incubation is intermediate between the low and high Km values, does not abolish the apparent negative cooperativity of ATP hydrolysis. It is concluded that this apparent cooperativity is not due to the presence of two different catalytic sites, nor to a cooperativity between the two catalytic sites, but to interaction between the catalytic sites and regulatory sites.  相似文献

Reported are results on the subunit composition of octameric hemerythrin (Hr) from the brachiopod Lingula reevii. Unlike most other Hrs, L. reevii Hr shows cooperativity in O2 binding. Purified L. reevii Hr was found to consist of two different subunits in approximately equimolar proportions. These two subunits differ in molecular weight by approximately 1000. Amino acid sequence data for the first 24 residues of the two subunits, labeled alpha and beta, show 70% identity with each other. Comparisons to amino acid sequences of other Hrs show approximately 50% identity in the first 24 residues and that both the alpha and beta subunits of L. reevii Hr have one residue deleted at their amino termini. Very recently, one other Hr, that from the brachiopod Lingula unguis, was also shown to contain equimolar proportions of two different subunits [Satake, K., Yugi, M., Kamo, M., Kihara, H., & Tsugita, A. (1990) Protein Seq. Data Anal. 3, 1-5], and this Hr also shows cooperativity in O2 binding. An alpha 4 beta 4 octamer is, therefore, proposed to be a common feature of those Hrs that show such cooperativity. Likely arrangements of alpha and beta subunits within an alpha 4 beta 4 octamer having the same configuration of subunits as that in other octameric Hrs are proposed. The most probable arrangements can be readily derived from physically reasonable restrictions on the types of intersubunit interactions and on transmission of allosteric effects.  相似文献

We constructed chimeras of the rat beta 2 and beta 4 neuronal nicotinic subunits to locate the regions that contribute to differences between the acetylcholine (ACh) dose-response relationships of the alpha 3 beta 2 and alpha 3 beta 4 receptors. Expressed in Xenopus oocytes, the alpha 3 beta 2 receptor displays an EC50 for ACh approximately 20-fold less than the EC50 of the alpha 3 beta 4 receptor. The apparent Hill slope (n(app)) of alpha 3 beta 2 is near one whereas the alpha 3 beta 4 receptor displays an n(app) near two. Substitutions within the first 120 residues convert the EC50 for ACh from one wild-type value to the other. Exchanging just beta 2:104-120 for the corresponding region of beta 4 shifts the EC50 of ACh dose-response relationship in the expected direction but does not completely convert the EC50 of the dose- response relationship from one wild-type value to the other. However, substitutions in the beta 2:104-120 region do account for the relative sensitivity of the alpha 3 beta 2 receptor to cytisine, tetramethylammonium, and ACh. The expression of beta 4-like (strong) cooperativity requires an extensive region of beta 4 (beta 4:1-301). Relatively short beta 2 substitutions (beta 2:104-120) can reduce cooperativity to beta 2-like values. The results suggest that amino acids within the first 120 residues of beta 2 and the corresponding region of beta 4 contribute to an agonist binding site that bridges the alpha and beta subunits in neuronal nicotinic receptors.  相似文献

White kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) contains two kinds of alpha-amylase inhibitors, one heat-stable (alpha AI-s) and one heat-labile (alpha AI-u). alpha AI-s has recently been revealed to be a tetrameric complex, alpha(2)beta(2), with two active sites [Kasahara et al. (1996) J. Biochem. 120, 177-183]. The present study was undertaken to reveal the molecular features of alpha AI-u, which is composed of three kinds of subunits, alpha, beta, and gamma. The gamma-subunit, in contrast to the alpha- and beta-subunits that are indistinguishable from the alpha- and beta-subunits of alpha AI-s, was found to correspond to a subunit of an alpha-amylase inhibitor-like protein, which has been identified as an inactive, evolutionary intermediate between arcelin and the alpha-amylase inhibitor in a P. vulgaris defense protein family. The polypeptide molecular weight of alpha AI-u determined by the light-scattering technique, together with the polypeptide molecular weights of the subunits, suggests that alpha AI-u is a trimeric complex, alpha beta gamma. The inhibition of alpha AI-u by increasing amounts of porcine pancreatic alpha-amylase (PPA) indicates that an inactive 1:1 complex is formed between alpha AI-u and PPA. Molecular weight estimation of the complex by the light-scattering technique confirmed that it is a complex of alpha AI-u with one PPA molecule. Thus it seems probable that alpha AI-u is an evolutionary intermediate of the P. vulgaris alpha-amylase inhibitor.  相似文献

Echicetin is a heterodimeric protein from the venom of the Indian saw-scaled viper, Echis carinatus. It binds to platelet glycoprotein Ib (GPIb) and thus inhibits platelet aggregation. It has two subunits, alpha and beta, consisting of 131 and 123 amino acid residues, respectively. The two chains are linked with a disulphide bond. The level of amino acid sequence homology between two subunits is 50%. The protein was purified from the venom of E.carinatus and crystallized using ammonium sulphate as a precipitant. The crystal structure has been determined at 2.4A resolution and refined to an R-factor of 0.187. Overall dimensions of the heterodimer are approximately 80Ax35Ax35A. The backbone folds of the two subunits are similar. The central portions of the polypeptide chains of alpha and beta-subunits move into each other to form a tight dimeric association. The remaining portions of the chains of both subunits fold in a manner similar to those observed in the carbohydrate-binding domains of C-type lectins. In echicetin, the Ca(2+)-binding sites are not present, despite being topologically equivalent to other similar Ca(2+)-binding proteins of the superfamily. The residues Ser41, Glu43 and Glu47 in the calcium-binding proteins of the related family are conserved but the residues Glu126/120 are replaced by lysine at the corresponding sites in the alpha and beta-subunits.  相似文献

Voltage-gated Ca(2+) channel beta subunits are important modulators of the pore-forming alpha(1) subunit. We have cloned two schistosome beta subunits that confer sensitivity to the antischistosomal drug praziquantel (PZQ) to an otherwise insensitive mammalian alpha(1) subunit. The primary site of beta subunit interaction with alpha(1) subunits is the beta interaction domain (BID). The BID contains two conserved serines (225, 235 in rat beta2a) that constitute consensus sites for protein kinase C phosphorylation. However, these serines are absent in these schistosome beta subunits. Here we show that the capability to confer PZQ sensitivity can be created in the rat beta2a subunit by eliminating both serines in the BID. These results are consistent with, and should help our understanding of, the selective toxicity of PZQ.  相似文献

The crustacean dactyl opener neuromuscular system has been studied extensively as a model system that exhibits several forms of synaptic plasticity. We report the ultrastructural features of the synapses on dactyl opener of the lobster (Homarus americanus) as determined by examination of serial thin sections. Several innervation sites supplied by an inhibitory motoneuron have been observed without nearby excitatory innervation, indicating that excitatory and inhibitory inputs to the muscle are not always closely matched. The ultrastructural features of the lobster synapses are generally similar to those described previously for the homologous crayfish muscle, with one major distinction: few dense bars are seen at the presynaptic membranes of these lobster synapses. The majority of the lobster neuromuscular synapses lack dense bars altogether, and the mean number of dense bars per synapse is relatively low. In view of the finding that the physiology of the lobster dactyl opener synapses is similar to that reported for crayfish, these ultrastructural observations suggest that the structural complexity of the synapses may not be a critical factor determining synaptic plasticity. This work was supported by funds from the University of Virginia Research and Development Committee.  相似文献
