Electrochemical data were acquired for several categories of anthelmintic agents, namely, iminium-type ions, metal derivatives and chelators, quinones and iminoquinones, and nitroheterocycles. Reductions usually were in the favorable range of +0.2 to -0.7 V versus normal hydrogen electrode. The drug effect is believed to result in part from either the catalytic production of oxidative stress or disruption of helminth electron transport systems. In comparative studies of sexual size dimorphism (SSD), the methods used to quantify dimorphism are controversial. SSD is commonly expressed as a ratio between species mean values of males and females, such as M/F or (M-F)/([M+F]/2), but a number of investigators have suggested that ratios should not be used, mainly because their distributions usually violate the assumptions of parametric statistical tests, or because they lead to spurious relationships that invalidate the interpretation and statistical significance of regressions and correlations. As an alternative to ratios, the comparative study of SSD can be conducted by a combination of regression with sex-specific data and residuals from this regression. Twenty-five data sets were selected from the literature and used to duplicate a variety of statistical procedures commonly employed in studies of SSD. All analyses were repeated with five different ratios and with methods that avoid the calculation of any ratios. These data and a review of the statistical properties of ratios and residuals indicate that: (1) most of the ratios used in the SSD literature are unnecessary, and several commonly used ratios are statistically inferior to others. Only two ratios are needed, one on a logarithmic scale and one on a linear scale; (2) there is no problem with spurious correlation or non-normality when ratios are used in several types of statistical procedures commonly employed in studies of SSD; (3) residuals cannot replace ratios for the evaluation of many questions regarding the pattern of SSD among species; and (4) residuals usually are used incorrectly, leading to misspecified regression equations. Most of the questions for which residuals are used should be addressed by multiple regression. These results apply to studies using comparative methods with or without adjustments for phylogenetic effects.  相似文献

To conserve and manage wetland resources, it is important to inventoryand monitor wetlands and their adjacent uplands. Satellite remote sensing hasseveral advantages for monitoring wetland resources, especially for largegeographic areas. This review summarizes the literature on satellite remotesensing of wetlands, including what classification techniques were mostsuccessful in identifying wetlands and separating them from other land covertypes. All types of wetlands have been studied with satellite remote sensing.Landsat MSS, Landsat TM, and SPOT are the major satellite systems that have beenused to study wetlands; other systems are NOAA AVHRR, IRS-1B LISS-II and radarsystems, including JERS-1, ERS-1 and RADARSAT. Early work with satellite imageryused visual interpretation for classification. The most commonly used computerclassification method to map wetlands is unsupervised classification orclustering. Maximum likelihood is the most common supervised classificationmethod. Wetland classification is difficult because of spectral confusion withother landcover classes and among different types of wetlands. However,multi-temporal data usually improves the classification of wetlands, as doesancillary data such as soil data, elevation or topography data. Classifiedsatellite imagery and maps derived from aerial photography have been comparedwith the conclusion that they offer different but complimentary information.Change detection studies have taken advantage of the repeat coverage andarchival data available with satellite remote sensing. Detailed wetland maps canbe updated using satellite imagery. Given the spatial resolution of satelliteremote sensing systems, fuzzy classification, subpixel classification, spectralmixture analysis, and mixtures estimation may provide more detailed informationon wetlands. A layered, hybrid or rule-based approach may give better resultsthan more traditional methods. The combination of radar and optical data providethe most promise for improving wetland classification.  相似文献

The ability to track change in biodiversity is essential to guide sustainable management and meet biodiversity monitoring, evaluation and reporting requirements, yet long-term data are usually scarce. Birds Australia has developed a simple survey methodology for use by their nationwide network of volunteers; it involves the collection of data on the presence–absence of species at repeatedly visited sites. Here we present a statistical methodology for use with these binary data to examine long-term change, using as an example records from a major bioregion of eastern Australia, 1999–2007. Regression splines were employed to model trend as a smooth nonlinear function of time within a generalised linear modelling framework. Confidence intervals based on bootstrap resampling provided a basis for assessing the significance of change, and a method was incorporated for identifying important change points in the trajectory from second derivatives of the curve. The methodology proved sensitive to change and the impact of extended dry periods was evident. The populations of several woodland species were found to be in significant decline. Two composite indices to track change common to a group of birds were developed and/or adapted from the existing literature. The results confirm the usefulness of repeated 2-ha presence–absence survey data to provide insight into patterns of long-term trends in bird populations. The statistical methodology described offers a means of tracking trends and identifying important time points and is particularly useful in situations where surveys of presence–absence of species are the most efficient way to gather long-term data.  相似文献

The genus Quercus is one of the most important tree species in Turkey. However, little is known on the ecological preferences of Turkish oak species regarding climate. We analyzed species response curves using a HOF-model approach to describe the general pattern of oak distributions along climatic gradients and to identify the driving climatic factors for eight oak species in Turkey. While climate data were extracted from the free available worldclim dataset, occurrence data on oak species were assembled from the literature into a vegetation database (n = 1,104). From the analyzed species response curves, only fa ew (16%) showed unimodal responses, while most were linear (31%) or exhibited a threshold response (31%). The driving factors were seasonality of temperature and seasonality of precipitation, indicating that Turkish oak species can be characterized best by the preference of climatic stability. These findings have important implications for conservation and climate change research, which usually focuses on trends of the mean values of temperature or precipitation but less often on the seasonality. In this study, we further tested whether niche optima derived from raw mean values of occurrences could replace missing model optima due to non-responsiveness of HOF models of type I. However, we did not find this to be a satisfactory solution. Finally, we discuss the need for the construction of a national database based on phytosociological relevés for Turkey.  相似文献

For the majority of eriophyoid species, host ranges have been established purely on the basis of collection records, usually without quantitative data. The aim of this study was to: (1) quantitatively examine published literature to explore whether relevant analyses of field-collected quantitative data were used to assess host specificity of herbivores; (2) propose a protocol for data analysis that could be applied to plant-feeding mites; (3) analyse host specificity of the grass-feeding Aceria species as a case study. Field data were collected in Central and Northern Europe over a period of 11 years, and included 73 grass species. For the eight Aceria species found, infestation parameters and host specificity indexes were assessed. Accumulation curves were calculated to study how the sampling effort influenced estimates of host specificity indexes. A literature analysis showed that among the studies that declared an aim of estimating the host range only 56% of them applied any quantitative analysis or informed on estimation reliability. The analysis of field-collected data and its interpretation showed the most complete and reliable conclusions about the host specificity of Aceria species when all indices were considered and, if available, other information about the mite’s ecology and biology. It was shown that estimates of host specificity could be strongly affected by sampling effort, and that several hundreds of samples should be collected for measuring the host specificity of grass-infesting mites, at least. Recommendations regarding host specificity estimation on the basis of field data are given.  相似文献

The results of stationary observations of the beluga Delphinapterus leucas Pall. 1776 conducted in Anadyr Estuary in 2000 were compared with literature and unpublished data. The belugas were found to occur in Anadyr Estuary almost throughout the ice-free period, from the first half of June until mid-November. The largest schools usually concentrated during the spawning migration of salmon in the bottleneck of Anadyr Estuary and in waters near the city of Anadyr.  相似文献

Abstract. The relationship between mean Ellenberg indicator values (IV) per vegetation relevé and environmental parameters measured in the field usually shows a large variation. We tested the hypothesis that this variation is caused by bias dependent on the phytosociological class. For this purpose we collected data containing vegetation relevés and measured soil pH (3631 records) or mean spring groundwater level (MSL, 1600 records). The relevés were assigned to vegetation types by an automated procedure. Regression of the mean indicator values for acidity on soil pH and the mean indicator values for moisture on MSL gave percentages explained variance similar to values that were reported earlier in literature. When the phytosociological class was added as an explanatory factor the explained variance increased considerably. Regression lines per vegetation type were estimated, many of which were significantly different from each other. In most cases the intercepts were different, but in some cases their slopes differed as well. The results show that Ellenberg indicator values for acidity and moisture appear to be biased towards the values that experts expect for the various phytosociological classes. On the basis of the results, we advise to use Ellenberg IVs only for comparison within the same vegetation type.  相似文献

We present a literature survey of studies using molecular markers to investigate genet diversity and structure in clonal plants. The data from 40 studies comprised 45 species of which only two were studied by DNA methods, the rest by isozyme markers. Less than one third of the studies provided information about the spatial distribution of individual genets within populations, and only 12.5% of the studies used mapping of all ramets within plots or part of the population in combination with identification of multilocus genotypes. We also present two case studies. InGlechoma hederacea morphological criteria were used to select clones. Multi-samples of ramets within these “clones” turned out to be variable using isozymes indicating that these “clones” in most cases consisted of several genets. One individual multilocus genotype covered tens of square metres. InHylocomium splendens samples from 10×10 cm plots usually consisted of a mixture of multilocus genotypes, but occasionally the whole plot consisted of one genet.  相似文献

The most common sex chromosome complex in sex chromatin-positive males with Klinefelter''s syndrome is XXY. When the complex is XXYY or XXXY, the clinical findings do not seem to differ materially from those seen in XXY subjects, although more patients with these intersexual chromosome complements need to be studied to establish possible phenotypical expressions of the chromosomal variants.Two male children with an XXXXY sex chromosome abnormality are described. The data obtained from the study of these cases and five others described in the literature suggest that the XXXXY patient is likely to have congenital defects not usually seen in the common form of the Klinefelter syndrome. These include a triad of (1) skeletal anomalies (including radioulnar synostosis), (2) hypogenitalism (hypoplasia of penis and scrotum, incomplete descent of testes and defective prepubertal development of seminiferous tubules), and (3) greater risk of severe mental deficiency.That the conclusions are based on data from a small number of patients is emphasized, together with the need for a cytogenetic survey of a large control or unselected population.  相似文献

In most mammals, juvenile males tend to be more vulnerable to starvation than females and consequently experience a higher mortality. This has been attributed to selection on high male growth rates in response to strong intrasexual competition. Among primates, by contrast, it has been noted that females tend to be less viable as juveniles. This has been attributed to a greater ability of juvenile males to contest for food. An alternative explanation is that there is local resource competition, and adults of the resident sex (usually females) attempt to limit the recruitment of unrelated immatures of the same sex by harassing them. These ideas are not mutually exclusive. A set of predictions from these three hypotheses was derived for two social systems and two levels of food supply. They were tested using estimates of juvenile mortality and juvenile sex ratios of non-human primates based on over 40 data sets drawn from the literature. The results indicate that the local resource competition hypothesis provides the best explanation for the observed patterns in differential juvenile mortality in primates. The contrast between the findings for primates and those for other taxa is attributed to the low growth rate of immatures and the widespread occurrence of conditions conducive to local resource competition in primates.  相似文献

This review discusses the large-scale laboratory maintenance of Schistosoma mansoni. Emphasized are features which increase efficiency in such facilities, and problems most frequently encountered. Profiles are given of the long-term, high-level production of 3 strains of S. mansoni. Two of the strains, NMRI and PR-1, were of Puerto Rican origin and the other, LE, was from Brazil. Three to 8 million cercariae of each strain were usually obtained per week. The most obvious differences between the 3 strains were cercarial output per snail and snail mortality rates. Maintenance problems encountered were usually related to water quality, temperature, genetics of the parasite or snail host, predators or contaminants, feeding, or crowding of snails. Examination of the production data from these 3 life cycles led to identification of features that could be of benefit for increasing the productivity and efficiency of other S. mansoni life cycles used in research activities.  相似文献

For many purposes it is often desirable to estimate animal population densities over large areas. Where total counts are not possible and sightings are relatively rare, a range of methods exists to estimate densities from indirect sign. Such methods are frequently unreliable and usually require independent calibration or confirmation. We present an analytical method for estimating population density from track counts. The method, widely known in the Russian Federation but not in the English language scientific literature, requires counts of tracks of known age, together with estimates of animal daily travel distances. We use simulations to verify the theoretical basis of the approach and to indicate potential precision that may be achieved. We illustrate application of the approach using a large data set on ungulate track counts in the Russian Far East. We suggest that under most circumstances, nonparametric bootstrapping will be the most appropriate method for deriving estimates of confidence intervals about density estimates. As with other approaches to estimating density from indirect sign, the method that we discuss is vulnerable to violations of an array of underlying assumptions. However, it is easily applied and could represent an important method by which the relationship between indices of abundance and absolute density can be understood.  相似文献

There is considerable controversy in the literature concerning the topography of the parathyroid glands in the calf. In the present study, the position of the parathyroids III (external parathyroids) and of the parathyroids IV (internal parathyroids) was examined in 25 young calves, 10 veal calves and 5 adult oxen. Detailed data for the recognition and the collection of these glands are provided. The parathyroids III are well suited for removal in a fresh state, since they can readily be located. They are situated medial to the carotid bifurcation and ventrolateral to the vagus nerve, where the latter gives off the cranial laryngeal nerve. In all young calves and in most veal calves, they lie embedded in the sub-basilar portion of the thymus, from which they can usually be differentiated easily by their color. However, they should not be confused with lymph nodes and hemal nodes, which are located in the neighborhood. Light-microscopical substantiation is therefore advisable. The parathyroids IV are not suited for collection, since they cannot be distinguished macroscopically from the adjacent thyroid gland.  相似文献

Current textbooks are believed to provide an updated knowledge. Medical students usually read the textbooks but not the literature that contain the original research articles and reviews. Here, we examined the gap between the current textbooks and literature with the enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells as an example. A total of 70 textbooks that were published for medical education during the last 10 yr was examined. The literature has been searched mainly from the Internet. We found that most textbooks (59 of 70) fail to mention the ECL cells. Due to the lack of information on the ECL cells, the mechanisms behind gastric acid secretion are described variously from book to book. However, up to the year 2000, 574 research articles and reviews have been published on the various aspects of the ECL cells. The role of the ECL cells in the regulation of the acid secretion has been well demonstrated for more than 20 years. The fact that the textbooks are out of date cannot be explained by the time required to write and publish them. Therefore, we question whether or not the current textbooks are good enough for physiology education and suggest both teachers and students read not only the textbooks, but also utilize the other sources such as the Internet to find and fill the gaps between the textbooks and literature. This is one of the approaches of problem-based learning.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Copyright and licensing of scientific data, internationally, are complex and present legal barriers to data sharing, integration and reuse, and therefore restrict the most efficient transfer and discovery of scientific knowledge. Much data are included within scientific journal articles, their published tables, additional files (supplementary material) and reference lists. However, these data are usually published under licenses which are not appropriate for data. Creative Commons CC0 is an appropriate and increasingly accepted method for dedicating data to the public domain, to enable data reuse with the minimum of restrictions. BioMed Central is committed to working towards implementation of open data-compliant licensing in its publications. Here we detail a protocol for implementing a combined Creative Commons Attribution license (for copyrightable material) and Creative Commons CC0 waiver (for data) agreement for content published in peer-reviewed open access journals. We explain the differences between legal requirements for attribution in copyright, and cultural requirements in scholarship for giving individuals credit for their work through citation. We argue that publishing data in scientific journals under CC0 will have numerous benefits for individuals and society, and yet will have minimal implications for authors and minimal impact on current publishing and research workflows. We provide practical examples and definitions of data types, such as XML and tabular data, and specific secondary use cases for published data, including text mining, reproducible research, and open bibliography. We believe this proposed change to the current copyright and licensing structure in science publishing will help clarify what users -- people and machines -- of the published literature can do, legally, with journal articles and make research using the published literature more efficient. We further believe this model could be adopted across multiple publishers, and invite comment on this article from all stakeholders in scientific research.  相似文献

Egg deposition within plants is one of the most widely distributed and ancient behaviors in Odonata. The resulting clutch consists of eggs placed in peculiar pattern that can be a characteristic for certain groups of Odonata. Despite their importance for paleontological and evolutionary research, data on egg‐clutch positioning are missing or insufficient for most species. Here, patterning of egg clutches in Lestes virens was measured and described in detail for the first time. The female usually produces a linear row of single eggs directed at an angle rightward or leftward to the longitudinal axis of plant substrate. Less often eggs are arranged in egg‐sets consisting of up to 4 eggs. Apparently, the female insect follows the rigid behavior stereotypes during oviposition and is unable to easily switch to the alternate stereotypical behavior of single egg deposition or production of multiegg sets. Based on a literature review and original data, egg clutch patterning of European Lestidae is overlaid on preexisting phylogenies. The resulting evolutionary scenario of egg‐clutch patterning can be considered in the framework of egg‐laying behavior in Lestidae.  相似文献

The search for pollen in carbonate-rich sediments from the hominid site Sterkfontein has been justified because previous investigations suggested that although pollen contamination is a problem, speleothems (e.g. travertines and stalagmites) are most likely to contain reliable assemblages. The new results confirm that, although they have some potential, most sediment types from the site, even speleothems, are usually not suitable for analysis and that they contain very low concentrations of pollen, if any. The extraction of pollen from them is complicated by the problem of contamination from the modern environment. Such contamination has shown up in many previous investigations at this and similar sites and judging from published literature, its significance has not been fully appreciated. Cave palynology can be a very valuable tool in palaeoenvironmental research but the caveats associated with palynology of different sediment types especially carbonate impregnated sediments must be emphasized.  相似文献

Atrazine (ATR) is a commonly used agricultural herbicide that has been the subject of epidemiologic studies assessing its relation to reproductive health problems. This review evaluates both the consistency and the quality of epidemiologic evidence testing the hypothesis that ATR exposure, at usually encountered levels, is a risk factor for birth defects, small for gestational age birth weight, prematurity, miscarriages, and problems of fetal growth and development. We followed the current methodological guidelines for systematic reviews by using two independent researchers to identify, retrieve, and evaluate the relevant epidemiologic literature on the relation of ATR to various adverse outcomes of birth and pregnancy. Each eligible paper was summarized with respect to its methods and results with particular attention to study design and exposure assessment, which have been cited as the main areas of weakness in ATR research. As a quantitative meta‐analysis was not feasible, the study results were categorized qualitatively as positive, null, or mixed. The literature on ATR and pregnancy‐related health outcomes is growing rapidly, but the quality of the data is poor with most papers using aggregate rather than individual‐level information. Without good quality data, the results are difficult to assess; however, it is worth noting that none of the outcome categories demonstrated consistent positive associations across studies. Considering the poor quality of the data and the lack of robust findings across studies, conclusions about a causal link between ATR and adverse pregnancy outcomes are not warranted.  相似文献
