Herbivorous insects use highly specific volatiles or blends of volatiles characteristic to particular plant species to locate their host plants. Thus, data on olfactory preferences can be valuable in developing integrated pest management tools that deal with manipulation of pest insect behaviour. We examined host plant odour preferences of the tomato leafminer, Liriomyza bryoniae (Kaltenbach) (Diptera: Agromyzidae), which is an economically important agricultural pest widespread throughout Europe. The odour preferences of leafminers were tested in dependence of feeding experiences. We ranked host plant odours by their appeal to L. bryoniae based on two‐choice tests using a Y‐tube olfactometer with five host plants: tomato, Solanum lycopersicum Mill.; bittersweet, Solanum dulcamara L.; downy ground‐cherry, Physalis pubescens L. (all Solanaceae); white goosefoot, Chenopodium album L. (Chenopodiaceae); and dead nettle, Lamium album L. (Lamiaceae). The results imply that ranking of host plant odours by their attractiveness to L. bryoniae is complicated due to the influence of larval and adult feeding experiences. Without any feeding experience as an adult, L. bryoniae males showed a preference for the airflow with host plant odour vs. pure air, whereas females did not display a preference. Further tests revealed that adult feeding experience can alter the odour choice of L. bryoniae females. After feeding experience, females showed a preference for host plant odour vs. pure air. Feeding experience in the larval stage influenced the choice by adults of both sexes: for males as well as females reared on bittersweet the odour of that plant was the most attractive. Thus, host feeding experience both in larval and/or adult stage of polyphagous tomato leafminer L. bryoniae influences host plant odour preference by adults.  相似文献

The anterior forebrain (AF) pathway of songbirds has an essential but poorly understood function during song learning, a process requiring auditory experience. Consistent with a role in processing auditory information, two nuclei of the AF, the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (lMAN) and Area X (X), contain some of the most complex auditory neurons known. In adult zebra finches, these neurons are strongly selective for both spectral and temporal properties of song: They respond more robustly to the bird's own song (BOS) than to songs of conspecific individuals, and they respond less well to BOS if it is played in reverse. lMAN and X neurons of young finches early in the process of song learning (30–45 days of age) are also song responsive, but lack the song and order selectivity present in adult birds. By an intermediate stage of learning (60 days), when birds have experience of both tutor song and their own developing (plastic) song, AF neurons have significant song and order selectivity for both tutor song and BOS (in this case, plastic song). The degree of BOS selectivity is still less than that found in adults, however. In addition, neurons at 60 days are heterogenous in their preference for BOS versus tutor song: Most prefer BOS, some prefer tutor song, and others respond equally to both songs. The selectivity of adult AF auditory neurons therefore arises rapidly during development from neurons that are initially unselective. These neurons are one of the clearest examples of experience-dependent acquisition of complex stimulus selectivity. Moreover, the neural selectivity for both BOS and tutor song at 60 days raises the possibility that experience of both songs during learning contributes to the properties of individual AF neurons. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Parasites can affect mate choice, with females preferentially selecting parasite-free males. Prior exposure to, or experience with, males has also been suggested to influence mate responses. Here, we examined the effects of an immediate, brief (1 or 15 min) pre-exposure to the urinary and associated odours of either an uninfected male house mouse,Mus domesticus , or a male infected with the natural murine nematode parasite, Heligomosomoides polygyrus, on the subsequent responses of female mice to the odours of infected and uninfected males. Using an odour preference test we found that females displayed a marked overall preference for the odours of uninfected males. Pre-exposure to the odours of a parasitized male decreased female preference for nonparasitized males and increased female preference for parasitized males. This ‘prior male’ effect was evident for both the total odour preference and initial odour choice. Females pre-exposed to the odour of a parasitized male displayed decreased choosiness and made no particular initial choice of a male, while still maintaining an overall preference for the odours of uninfected males. These shifts in initial choice and odour preference were not directly associated with either female stress responses or stress-related odour cues of the males. Our findings show that female mice can distinguish between parasitized and nonparasitized males on the basis of odour and suggest that a brief exposure to the odours of infected males influences females' immediate odour preferences, and their subsequent preference for and choice of males. This rapid, infection-associated ‘prior male’ effect may contribute to the reported variations in female mate preference and choice. Under laboratory conditions, the development of larvae of the sand dollar Scaphechinus mirabilis (Agassiz) took 28.5–29 days from fertilization to settling and the end of metamorphosis at a temperature 20°C and salinity 32.2–32.6‰ The cleavage divisions were completed in 12 hours after fertilization (AF) by the release of free swimming ciliary blastula from the egg membrane. The larvae attained pluteus I stage with one pair of arms at an age of 40 hours. In 4.5–5 days the pluteus II stage with three pairs of arms, and in 9 days the pluteus III stage with four pairs of arms were formed. On the 20–21st day AF the larvae developed a vestibule, in which the adult skeleton rudiments, spicules, plates and pedicellariae were formed on the 26–27th day AF. The size of the larvae at an age of 22.5 days was 1064.3 ± 44.7 μm. The settling of larvae was recorded on the 28–29th day of development. Most of the larvae completed their metamorphosis in 4.5–5 hours after settling.  相似文献

Human breast milk is primarily colostrum immediately following birth. Colostrum gradually changes to mature milk over the next several days. The role of colostrum in fighting infections and promoting growth and development of the newborn is widely acknowledged. This role is mediated by differences across cultures in the acceptability of colostrum and the prevalence of colostrum feeding. This study examined the prevalence of colostrum feeding and time to initiation of breast-feeding in 143 rural Bangladeshi women in Matlab thana. Structured interviews were collected during a 9-month prospective study conducted in 1993. Women were usually interviewed within 4 days of giving birth and were asked about whether or not they fed their child colostrum and the number of hours until they began breast-feeding the baby. Ninety per cent of the mothers reported feeding their newborn colostrum. A logistic regression found no effect on the prevalence of colostrum feeding from the following covariates: mother's age, parity, history of pregnancy loss, child's sex, mother's self-report of delivery complications, and the time from birth to interview. Fifty-nine per cent of mothers initiated breast-feeding within 4 h, and 88% within 12 h of parturition. Survival analysis was used to estimate the effects of covariates on the time from delivery to initial breast-feeding. Time to initial breast-feeding was delayed slightly, but significantly, for older mothers, for male infants, and by mothers who did not report delivery complications. The percentage of mothers who fed their child colostrum was higher, and times to initial breast-feeding were shorter, than almost all previous reports from South Asia. These findings might be explained, in part, by methodological differences among studies, but it is suggested that recent changes towards earlier initiation of breast-feeding have taken place in rural Bangladesh.  相似文献

In parasitoid insects, successful offspring development depends on the female’s ability to find a suitable host. Specific recognition is often based on responses to olfactory cues, but their source and nature have rarely been determined. –This paper deals with the recognition of odours involved in host location by Leptopilina boulardi[Barbotin, Carton & Kelner-Pillault] (Hymenoptera: Eucoilidae), a larval parasitoid of Drosophila species that develops in mature fruits. The nature and origin of volatile stimuli recognized among odours of the host–fruit complex, and the effect of learning on this recognition, were investigated. Oriented responses to these odours were observed in a four-armed olfactometer and were analysed with the observer software (Noldus Information Technology). Fruit odours alone (banana and pear) were not spontaneously attractive to naive parasitoids, whereas naturally-infested bananas were highly attractive. The attraction was related to the odour that adult Drosophila left on the substrate but not to Drosophila oviposition activity or larval development. A synergism between some fruit odours (banana and pear) and the odour left by adult Drosophila on damp filter paper was observed. However, when testing a non-fruit substrate (mushroom), no synergism was observed. Thus, female L. boulardi may innately recognize host–food substrate odours associated with odours from the adult stage of their host. In addition, an oviposition experience on an infested banana allows L. boulardi females to memorise the fruit odour itself through associative learning. The adaptive significance of this process is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Buffalo milk was completely desugared by fermentation for 17 h withSaccharomyces fragilis. A thin-layer chromatographic profile indicated the total absence of lactose, galactose, glucose and any oligosaccharides. Desugaring by fermentation did not alter the lipid composition or the protein content of the milk. Gas chromatographic studies indicated the formation of volatile compounds such as acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, ethyl alcohol, n-propanol, n-butanol and isoamyl alcohol. A pleasant fruity odour observed in the initial stage of fermentation changed to an overripe fruity odour on fermentation. The volatile compounds formed disappeared on spraydrying the milk, leaving only a residual yeasty odour in the desugared milk powder.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Hypernatremic dehydration in neonates is a potentially devastating condition. Recent reports have identified breast-feeding malnutrition as a key factor in its pathophysiology. METHODS: Using a theoretical framework for breast-feeding kinetics, a retrospective chart review of all neonates less than 28 days of age who were seen at either British Columbia''s Children''s Hospital or the Vancouver Breastfeeding Centre between 1991-1994 was conducted to identify and classify possible causes of breast-feeding malnutrition among neonates who developed hypernatremic dehydration. RESULTS: Twenty-one cases hypernatremic dehydration were identified. Infant weight loss ranged from 8% to 30% of birth weight, and serum sodium levels ranged from 146 mmol/L to 207 mmol/L. In each case, maternal or infant factors (e.g., poor breast-feeding technique, lactation failure following postpartum hemorrhage and infant suckling disorders associated with cleft palate or ankyloglossia) that could interfere with either lactation or breast-feeding dynamics and account for insufficient breast milk intake were identified. INTERPRETATION: Prenatal and in-hospital screening for maternal and infant risk factors for breast-feeding malnutrition combined with early postpartum follow-up to detect excessive infant weight loss are important for the prevention of neonatal hypernatremic dehydration.  相似文献

Lipidic components, as well as fatty acid composition and vitamin E content were determined in colostrum (days 3-5 of postpartum) and mature milk (day 21) in 8 women from Murcia (Spain). Triglycerides concentration was higher and cholesterol and esterified cholesterol were lower in mature milk than in colostrum, whereas phospholipid content was similar. These differences indicate that the diameter of milk fat globules increases in mature milk. The percentage of medium-chain fatty acids (12:0 and 14:0) increased in mature milk as compared to colostrum, reflecting de novo synthesis of fatty acids. With the only exception of stearic acid which was lower in mature milk than in colostrum, the remaining long-chain fatty acids was similar. The proportion of both linoleic (18:2) and eicosapentaenoic (20:5) acids found in mature milk and colostrum is higher than in studies from other countries and may reflect the intake of high proportions of polyunsaturated fat from vegetable oils and fish in the studied women. Both vitamin E content and vitamin E/linoleic acid ratio in mature milk are lower than in colostrum, evidencing the efficient mechanism of mammary gland vitamin E uptake around parturition.  相似文献

Abstract. Insects commonly improve the effectiveness with which they locate biotic resources through learning, but the mechanism by which experience exerts its effects has rarely been studied in detail. The effect of oviposition experience on upwind movement of the eucoilid parasitoid, Leptopilina heterotoma (Thomson) (Hym.: Eucoilidae), in odour plumes of host microhabitats, was quantified with the use of a Kramer-type locomotion compensator. A 2h exposure to host Drosophila melanogaster larvae in either fermenting apple-yeast or decaying mushroom substrate (known to affect their preference for these odours in glasshouse and field choice experiments) had a number of effects on movement in plumes of each substrate. Females experienced with a particular substrate walked faster and straighter, made narrower turns and spent more time in upwind movement (i.e. toward the source) in a plume of odour from that substrate than in odour from an alternative substrate. Inexperienced females, by contrast, generally showed little or no significant difference in responses to alternative odours. In addition to affecting the mean values of movement parameters, experience also affected variability around those means. When walking speed or path straightness in an odour plume was increased by experience, variability among individuals was correspondingly decreased. The consequences of odour learning for microhabitat choice is discussed briefly.  相似文献

目的探讨岩藻糖基化人乳低聚糖在新生儿无乳链球菌肺炎中的治疗作用。方法收集本院2015年7月至2017年2月痰培养阳性新生儿无乳链球菌、大肠埃希菌和肺炎克雷伯菌感染性肺炎病例,分析不同喂养方式、不同病原类别肺炎在住院时间、炎症、并发症等指标差异,探讨岩藻糖基化人乳低聚糖对无乳链球菌感染的独特治疗作用;使用含有不同浓度岩藻糖基化人乳低聚糖的培养基对无乳链球菌进行培养,研究岩藻糖基化人乳低聚糖抑制无乳链球菌的最佳浓度;分别使用岩藻糖基化人乳低聚糖或酸性人乳低聚糖加入培养基中对无乳链球菌、大肠埃希菌、肺炎克雷伯菌进行培养,进一步探讨岩藻糖基化人乳低聚糖对无乳链球菌的独特抑制作用。结果无乳链球菌肺炎患儿,母乳喂养组的住院时间较人工喂养组住院时间减少[(8.35±0.77)d vs(10.91±0.54)d,t=1.557 676,P<0.05)],PCT值较人工喂养组低[(2.38±0.63)ng/mL vs(8.69±2.23)ng/mL,t=1.419 964,P<0.05],白细胞计数较人工喂养组低[(13.28±1.08)×10^9/L vs(16.16±0.98)×10^9/L,t=1.878 447,P<0.05],脑膜炎发生率较人工喂养组低(5%vs 35%,χ^2=5.601 353,P<0.05),呼吸机使用率较人工喂养组低(10.0%vs 36.4%,χ^2=4.005 042,P<0.05);大肠埃希菌肺炎患儿、肺炎克雷伯菌肺炎患儿,母乳喂养组与人工喂养组比较,住院时间稍减少,PCT值、白细胞计数、脑膜炎发生率和呼吸机使用率均有所降低,差异无统计学意义;细菌培养实验发现岩藻糖基化人乳低聚糖在2.5 mg/L浓度的时候可以明显抑制无乳链球菌的生长,对大肠埃希菌和肺炎克雷伯菌无明显抑制作用,酸性人乳低聚糖对3种细菌均无抑制作用。结论岩藻糖基化人乳低聚糖可以明显抑制无乳链球菌的生长,可能成为未来无乳链球菌感染性肺炎治疗中新的靶点,值得深入研究。  相似文献

This study assessed the choline status in newborns, infants, children, breast-feeding women, breast milk, infant formula, breast-fed and formula-fed infants. The serum free choline level was 35.1+/-1.1 micromol/L at birth and decreased to 24.2+/-1.6, 18.1+/-0.8, 16.3+/-0.9, 14.3+/-0.8, 12.9+/-0.6 or 10.9+/-0.6 micromol/L at 22-28, 151-180, 331-365, 571-730, 731-1095 or 4016-4380 days after birth, respectively. The serum phospholipid-bound choline level was 1997+/-75 micromol/L at birth and increased gradually to 2315+/-190 or 2572 +/-100 micromol/L at 571-730 or 4016-4380 days after birth, respectively. In breast-feeding women, serum free and phospholipid-bound choline levels were doubled at 12-28 days after birth, they decreased toward the control values with time. Free choline, phosphocholine and glycerophosphocholine were major choline compounds in breast milk. Their concentrations in mature milk were much greater than in colostrum and serum. Choline contents of breast milk varied greatly between mothers, and milk free choline levels were correlated with serum free choline (r=.541; P<.001), phospholipid-bound choline (r=.527; P<.001) and glycerophosphocholine (r=.299; P<.01) concentrations and lactating days (r=.520; P<.001). In breast-fed infants, serum free choline concentrations were correlated with free choline (r=.47; P<.001), phosphocholine (r=.345; P<.002), glycerophosphocholine (r=.311; P<.01) and total choline (r=.306; P<.01) contents of breast milk. Serum free choline concentration in formula-fed infants was lower than breast-fed infants. These data show that (a) circulating choline status is elevated during infancy and lactation, (b) choline contents of breast milk vary between mothers and milk free choline contents are influenced by maternal circulating choline status, and (c) the choline contents of breast milk can influence infants' circulating choline status.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the accumulation and depletion of cadmium in the blood, milk, hair, feces, and urine of Holstein cows during and after treatment. Three Holstein cows received daily oral cadmium administrations (as cadmium chloride) of 0.182 mg/kg body weight/day for 21 days followed by a 63-day withdrawal period. Blood, milk, hair, feces, and urine were collected during treatment and withdrawal periods. Cadmium concentrations were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Cadmium concentrations in blood (0.61–1.12 μg/L), milk (0.39–1.04 μg/L), and urine (0.41–2.05 μg/L) were low. Comparatively, cadmium concentrations in feces were higher, especially on treatment day 14 (20.11 mg/kg dry matter). Fecal cadmium concentrations decreased to baseline levels (0.12 mg/kg dry matter) on withdrawal day 21. Hair cadmium concentrations increased with treatment, reaching the highest levels on withdrawal day 7 (24.33 μg/kg). Most of the cadmium was excreted via the feces and very little was present in urine or milk. Cadmium residues were detected in blood and milk more than 63 days after cadmium withdrawal. Hair cadmium concentrations may reflect exposure to the metal.  相似文献

Summary Snails were tested in an olfactometer for their orientation to food odours. Measures of odour choice, latency to make a choice and percentage of upwind orientations were obtained after experimental manipulations of dietary experience and hunger motivation. Juvenile snails, given an exclusive diet of a certain food for 12 h or less, oriented preferentially toward the odour of that food when subsequently presented with a choice between it and a novel food odour (Fig. 2). A 48 h period of exposure to a food resulted in a 21 day retention of the odour preference (Fig. 3). There was no evidence for an especially sensitive period for conditioning during the first 50 days of age (Fig. 4); however, adult snails (minimum 1 year old) required longer periods of dietary exposure to establish equivalent food odour memories (Fig. 5). Measures of latency and percentage of upwind orientations confirmed the choice data in demonstrating an effect of dietary experiences on olfactory orientation. Hunger motivation increased the selection for familiar food odours, and reduced the latency (Fig. 6 and Tables 3 and 4). Sensory adaptation appears inadequate to explain the conditioning phenomenon since formation of the preferences was contingent upon ingestion of the foods; exposure to the food odours alone was insufficient (Table 2). Damage and early destruction of Taenia taeniaeformis larvae in resistant hosts, and anomalous development in susceptible hosts: a light microscopic and ultrastructural study. International Journal for Parasitology15: 377–384. Taenia taeniaeformis larvae in resistant C57 mice have been studied from 5th to 15th day post-infection (L5–L15) both at the light and electron microscopic level. L5 stages were already damaged and total destruction occurred by approx. 15 days post-infection. In stage L5, unlike fertile larvae from C3H mice, the perilarval amorphous layer (PAL) was generally absent, and the host's cells were in close contact with the parasite surface. At this stage eosinophils were already present together with neutrophils and macrophages. Larvae were seen increasing in volume between stages L6 and L8, but remained constant from stages L9 to L14, while both the tegumental distal cytoplasm (TDC) and the subtegumental cellular layer (SCL) gradually decreased. In stages L10–L14 only a narrow TDC separated the larval cavity from host cells. After the larval tegument had been reduced in thickness the eosinophil lytic enzyme release onto the parasite surface contributed to produce a ‘hole’ in the TDC where host cells penetrated and gradually filled the larval cavity of L15, destroying the parasitic residues. Therefore anomalous small larvae (L50 and more) from C3H mice (susceptible host) have been studied: in these the scolex anlagen was absent or greatly reduced; the TDC was very narrow and the SCL greatly damaged. Outside the larva the ‘host tissue’ appeared as an unidentifiable amorphous material. These larvae cannot be considered ‘dead’ but are defined as sterile.  相似文献

Three commercial lipases (lipases A1 and A2 were pregastric lipases and lipase A3 was a fungal lipase) from three different manufacturers were studied to develop the characteristic pungent flavour of Idiazabal (sheep's raw milk) cheese in experimental productions (50 L vats), both in summer and in winter. In the experimental productions, all lipases significantly increased the concentration of total free fatty acids (FFA), both after 90 and 180 days of ripening. Lipases A1 and A2 increased primarily the concentration of short-chain FFA (C4, C6 and C10), whereas C16:0 and C18:1 were the main FFA obtained with lipase A3. Cheeses made with no lipase had the lowest concentrations of total FFA, with C16:0 and C18:1 as the major FFA. The percent of short-chain FFA was 70–80% of the total for lipases A1 and A2, but 30–40% in cheeses made with lipase A3 or with no lipase. Sensory analysis was performed after 90 and 180 days of ripening. Cheeses made with lipases A1 or A2 or with lamb rennet paste (which contains pregastric lipase and was used as control for sensory analysis) had significantly higher scores in 6 of the 22 attributes analyzed (odour and flavour intensity, sharp odour, pungent flavour and rennet odour and flavour) than cheeses made with lipase A3 or with no lipase added. Lipase A1 was selected to conduct commercial cheese productions (200 L vats) made by artisan cheese makers adding 94 lipase units (LU)/50 L (high amount) or 8 LU/50 L (low amount). Control cheeses were made with lamb rennet paste having comparable amounts of lipolytic activity. After 90 and 180 days of ripening, cheeses made with the same amount of lipase (either as lipase A1 or present in lamb rennet paste) were indistinguishable from each other, both from the sensory and analytical points of view (comparable amounts of total FFA, and percent FFA composition). Those with low amount of lipase were rated as ‘mild’, whereas those with high amount of lipase were rated as ‘strong’. An industrial production (5000 L vat) with 100 LU/50 L yielded cheeses of ‘intermediate strength’ and intermediate levels of lipolysis. A linear correlation was observed between percent of short-chain FFA and the score for pungent flavour, for all amounts of lipase used in this study. We conclude that lipase A1 is an adequate commercial lipase to develop the characteristic flavour of Idiazabal cheese, both in artisan and industrial fabrications.  相似文献

The zinc concentration of amniotic fluid (AF) of 129 pregnant women was analyzed by the flame atomic absorption spectrometry. This prospective study was performed in order to find out whether the determination of the AF zinc concentration can be used to monitor the growth and development of the fetus. There were two groups of patients: early stage (15th–19th gestation wk) in which the amniocentesis was performed as a prenatal genetic examination, and late stage (26th–40th wk) in which the amniocentesis was performed due to obstetric reasons. The average AF zinc concentrations were 1.2 and 1.0 μmol/L in the early and late gestation group, respectively. The AF zinc concentration did not correlate with the weight, height, or Apgar scores of the newborn nor with the maternal diseases, age, or parity. The AF zinc concentration in the late gestation group was significantly lower if the fetus was male than if it was female. If the AF was greenish the zinc concentration was elevated. One malformation, congenital nephrosis, with an exceptionally high zinc concentration (9.0 μmol/L), was found.  相似文献

Across phylogeny, early experience plays a critical role in nervous system development. In these experiments, we investigated the long-term effects that specific patterns of sensory experience during development had on the biology and function of the Caenorhabditis elegans nervous system. The delivery of a specific pattern of mechanosensory stimulation in the first larval stage (L1) produced significant enhancement in the tap withdrawal behavioral response, expression patterns of an ionotropic glutamate receptor (iGluR) subunit and mRNA levels for that receptor in 3-day-old adult worms and a depression of these same three measures in 5-day-old adult worms. A critical period for the 3-day enhanced behavior and GLR distribution was observed in L1, whereas there was no critical period for the depressed effects observed in 5-day-old worms. The spaced pattern of stimulation was essential for expression of this effect: Various forms of massed training produced neither the enhancement at 3 days nor the depression at 5 days. The 5-day depressed behavioral response had many features in common with long-term memory, including sensitivity to disruption following retrieval. The different behavioral and molecular effects that early patterned mechanosensory stimulation produced in 3 and 5-day-old worms led us to hypothesize that separate cellular phenomena produced the enhanced 3-day and depressed 5-day behaviors and molecular effects.  相似文献

Abstract.  Behavioural responses to odours of oilseed rape in bud and flower stage and to green and yellow colours are studied for the two main phenological stages of pollen beetles, Meligethes aeneus , a major pest of oilseed rape, Brassica napus . Over-wintered individuals oviposit in buds of oilseed rape. Adults of the new generation (i.e. the summer generation) feed on flowers of different plant species before over wintering. In olfactometer experiments, the over-wintered beetles display a higher preference for odour of oilseed rape at the bud stage compared with the summer generation, both with and without colour stimuli. Flower odours are preferred in combination with yellow colour. Colour stimuli presented alone do not affect the behaviour. The summer generation beetles respond to both bud and flower odour. Adding colour stimuli changes the summer generations preference towards yellow and flower odour.  相似文献

We investigated the ability of honeybees, Apis mellifera, to use olfactory information gained in a given experimental context, in other contexts. First, restrained bees were subjected to a Pavlovian associative learning procedure, based on the conditioning of the proboscis extension response (PER), where a floral odour was paired with a sugar reward. We observed the orientation behaviour of conditioned and na?ve bees in a four-armed olfactometer with four contiguous fields either scented with the conditioning odour or unscented. Information transfer was clearly shown, conditioned bees orienting towards the conditioning odour, whilst na?ve bees shunned it. Second, the effect of passive olfactory exposures during the bees' development was assessed in two behavioural contexts: either orientation in the olfactometer or a PER conditioning procedure. Two exposure periods were applied: (1) the pupal stage (9 days before emergence); (2) the early adult stage (8 days after emergence). No effect of preimaginal exposure was recorded, but exposure during the early adult stage induced a higher choice frequency of the odour field in the olfactometer, and lower learning performance in the PER conditioning assay. These observations show that olfactory information gained during development can modify bees' later behaviour in different contexts: this is another instance of olfactory information transfer in bees. These results also suggest that nonassociative learning phenomena, taking place at a critical period during development, might be involved in the maturation of the bees' olfactory system, and in the organization of odour-mediated behaviours.
