ABSTRACT. Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrows ( Ammodramus caudacutus ) build ground nests, often with a closely-woven dome, in marshes that frequently flood during high tides. To test the hypothesis that domed nests help reduce the loss of eggs and chicks due to flooding or predation, we examined the characteristics and fate of 102 nests at sites along the coast of Connecticut. To test whether nest structure was tailored to suit microhabitat conditions, we also measured vegetation characteristics around nests. Finally, we conducted artificial nest-flooding experiments to determine whether removal of domes reduced egg retention during flooding. We found no significant effects of nest structure on breeding success or failure, and few significant correlations between nest structure and microhabitat. The height of nests above the ground, however, increased with vegetation height, supporting the hypothesis that nest construction is influenced by flooding, but not supporting the hypothesis that predation risk is important. Dome removal experiments showed that domes have a highly significant effect on the retention of eggs during flooding, suggesting that domes help eggs survive the regular tidal flooding of marshes. 相似文献

All birds construct nests in which to lay eggs and/or raise offspring. Traditionally, it was thought that natural selection and the requirement to minimize the risk of predation determined the design of completed nests. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that sexual selection also influences nest design. This is an important development as while species such as bowerbirds build structures that are extended phenotypic signals whose sole purpose is to attract a mate, nests contain eggs and/or offspring, thereby suggesting a direct trade‐off between the conflicting requirements of natural and sexual selection. Nest design also varies adaptively in order to both minimize the detrimental effects of parasites and to create a suitable microclimate for parents and developing offspring in relation to predictable variation in environmental conditions. Our understanding of the design and function of birds' nests has increased considerably in recent years, and the evidence suggests that nests have four nonmutually exclusive functions. Consequently, we conclude that the design of birds' nests is far more sophisticated than previously realized and that nests are multifunctional structures that have important fitness consequences for the builder/s. 相似文献

Ground-nesting species are vulnerable to a wide range of predators and often experience very high levels of nest predation. Strategies to reduce nest vulnerability can include concealing nests in vegetation and/or nesting in locations in which nests and eggs are camouflaged and less easy for predators to locate. These strategies could have important implications for the distribution of ground-nesting species and the success rates of nests in areas with differing vegetation structure. However, the factors influencing the success of nest concealment and camouflage strategies in ground-nesting species are complex. Here we explore the effects of local vegetation structure and extent of nest concealment on nest predation rates in a range of ground-nesting, sympatric wader species with differing nest concealment strategies (open-nest species: Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus, Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria and Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus; concealed-nest species: Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa, Redshank Tringa totanus and Snipe Gallinago gallinago) in south Iceland, in landscapes that comprise substantial variability in vegetation structure at a range of scales. We monitored 469 nests of these six wader species in 2015 and 2016 and ~40% of these nests were predated. Nest predation rates were similar for open-nest and concealed-nest species and did not vary with vegetation structure in the surrounding landscape, but nest-concealing species were ~10% more likely to have nests predated when they were poorly concealed, and the frequency of poorly concealed nests was higher in colder conditions at the start of the breeding season. For concealed-nest species, the reduced capacity to hide nests in colder conditions is likely to reflect low rates of vegetation growth in such conditions. The ongoing trend for warmer springs at subarctic latitudes could result in more rapid vegetation growth, with consequent increases in the success rates of early nests of concealed-nest species. Temperature-related effects on nest concealment from predators could thus be an important mechanism through which climate change affecting vegetation could have population-level impacts on breeding birds at higher latitudes. 相似文献

Songbird nests are an important life‐history component with multiple functions, including the creation of a suitable microclimate for offspring development. Thus, functional nest characteristics may influence fitness correlates, such as nestling size traits, and may co‐vary with prevailing environmental conditions. We investigated among‐ and within‐female variation in nest substrate, lining and decoration structures with associated fitness consequences (hatching success, nestling size traits, nest survival) across two breeding seasons for an alpine population of Horned Lark Eremophila alpestris. We combined these observations with explicit measures of nest temperature to address the influence of nest characteristics on microclimate. Nests in heather substrate had the coldest microclimates compared with grass and bare‐ground substrate, but also the greatest nest survival rates (68% versus 37–44% in other substrates), indicating the potential for substrate use decisions to reflect a trade‐off between microclimate and nest survival in response to prevailing weather and predation risk conditions. Furthermore, nest lining and nest decoration patterns indicated some support for a thermoregulatory function. Nests that were lined with willow (Salix sp.) seed‐down were associated with larger, heavier nestlings and the use of down lining decreased in frequency as the season warmed up. Nest decoration placed in front of the nest (e.g. stones or dirt clumps varying in mass from 5.3 to 186.6 g) was positively associated with warmer nest microclimates. Females demonstrated high phenotypic flexibility, as 61–94% of the observed variance in nest characteristics was explained by within‐female rather than among‐female differences. Such flexible nesting behaviour suggests the capacity to adjust to changing environmental conditions to maintain vital fitness correlates such as nest survival and nestling size development. 相似文献

We used x-ray computed tomography to study the elaboration of nest structures in small sand-filled nest boxes by Argentine
ant (Linepithema humile) colonies composed of 10, 100, and 1000 workers. The pattern of nest growth was consistent with a process of density-dependent
stimulation of excavation, which subsided as nests grew and the density of digging stimuli declined. Thus, nest excavation
would be auto-regulating, and final nest size should be adjusted to colony size. We found that excavation rates and final
nest sizes increased with colony size, but were not tenfold greater in 1000-worker colonies than in 100-worker colonies. In
the largest colonies, the internal surface area scaled allometrically with volume, so that more surface was obtained relative
to volume excavated as the nest grew. Although the gross features of Argentine ant nests, such as total size, seem explicable
by a simple, self-organized regulatory process, other features of the nest architecture will require further investigation.

Across the brains of different bird species, the cerebellum varies greatly in the amount of surface folding (foliation). The degree of cerebellar foliation is thought to correlate positively with the processing capacity of the cerebellum, supporting complex motor abilities, particularly manipulative skills. Here, we tested this hypothesis by investigating the relationship between cerebellar foliation and species-typical nest structure in birds. Increasing complexity of nest structure is a measure of a bird''s ability to manipulate nesting material into the required shape. Consistent with our hypothesis, avian cerebellar foliation increases as the complexity of the nest built increases, setting the scene for the exploration of nest building at the neural level. 相似文献

Abstract: This work was carried out to determine the internal and external structures of Atta bisphaerica (Forel) nests. Six nests were excavated and during excavation, all data referring to chambers and tunnels were recorded. Three nests had been internally cement-moulded, which enabled a better view of the chamber and tunnel structures. Atta bisphaerica nests presented a similar structural pattern, varying only in the number of chambers as a function of external mound area. Chambers were spherical with two communication tunnels. Internal tunnels had an elliptical section, sometimes circular, indirectly linked to chambers through ramifications and directly through short tunnels. Entrance holes were linked to the area of highest chamber concentration by tunnels from the elliptical section, which led to the nest in a radial manner. Knowledge of the colony's three-dimensional architecture permits successful application of chemical control processes, reduces the quantity of product applied, and consequently diminishes costs and environmental damage. 相似文献

Validating the use of temperature data loggers to measure survival of songbird nests 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

ABSTRACT. Accurate determination of nest fates and nest predators is possible through continuous video monitoring, but such monitoring is relatively expensive and labor intensive. If documenting of the timing of nest termination events is sufficient, then data loggers (DL) may allow more extensive sampling and may represent a viable alternative. I validated temperature DL records of nest survival time by simultaneous videotaping and compared results derived from DL records with those obtained by regular nest visits by an observer. I estimated the fate of 937 nests of nine species of open cup-nesting songbirds, including 673 nests monitored using DL, 165 monitored using video cameras, 33 validation nests monitored simultaneously using both DL and video cameras, and 132 control nests monitored only by observer visits. Deployment of DL did not negatively influence nest survival rate. DL reliably recorded survival time and allowed classification of nest fates based on the potential fledging age, regardless of the frequency of nest visits by an observer. The true fate of nests that survived beyond the potential fledging age can not be safely determined from time of failure, except for nocturnal events that suggest partial predation. Video revealed frequent partial or complete predation on nests with old nestlings that would have been categorized as successful by other methods. I conclude that temperature DL are efficient, reliable, and relatively inexpensive tools for recording exact nest survival times and classification of nest fates, with implications for nest survival modeling and discriminating between diurnal and nocturnal predation. 相似文献

For federally listed species such as Least Tern Sternula antillarum and Piping Plover Charadrius melodus, correct determination of nest fates and causes of nest failure is crucial for understanding population dynamics and improving monitoring programmes. We used video cameras to evaluate nest fate misclassification rate and to identify factors that may cause researchers monitoring nests at different intervals to classify Least Tern and Piping Plover nest fates incorrectly. During the 2013–2015 breeding seasons, we installed miniature surveillance cameras at 65 of 294 Least Tern and 89 of 551 Piping Plover nests under observation on the Missouri River in North Dakota. Nest fates were assigned in the field from remains found at the nest‐site and then again by an independent researcher who reviewed camera footage. We used ordinal logistic regressions to examine whether monitoring interval, clutch age or temporal factors influenced a correct, partially misclassified (probable successful in the field vs. successful by camera) or misclassified nest fate classification. During a 7‐day monitoring interval between visits, 45% of nests were partially and 27.5% were fully misclassified. The percentage of partially (20%) and fully (8.0%) misclassified nests decreased with a more intensive (3‐day) monitoring schedule. Researchers were also less likely to correctly classify nest fates for Least Terns than for Piping Plovers, and as clutch age and monitoring interval increased for both species. Furthermore, causes of failure (e.g. predators, weather) as determined from field evidence vs. video disagreed for 53.5% of nests. The ability to identify accurately nest fate and cause of nest failure will facilitate a better understanding of factors that limit productivity and will lead to better informed management decisions for improving nest survival. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Grallaria and Grallaricula antpittas are poorly known ground antbirds (Formicariidae), which reach their center of diversity in the tropical Andes region. Here we review published literature on the reproductive ecology of these two genera, summarizing and synthesizing the information. Nests have been described for 13 of the 31 species of Grallaria and four of the eight species of Grallaricula. For both genera, nests are open cups placed either against a strong support (e.g., tree trunks; Grallaria) or with multiple small supports (e.g., vine tangles; both genera). Nest lining is generally sparse, with nest cup composition ranging from humid material (e.g., moss) to primarily sticks and leaf material, depending on the species. Grallaria typically lay two bluish‐green to turquoise eggs, sometimes with spotting, whereas Grallaricula lay 1–2 eggs with heavy markings and pale brown or buffy (rarely light green) background coloration. For the few species where information is available, both male and female parents are believed to participate in building, incubation, and nestling provisioning, with high incubation attentiveness (often >90%, especially later in incubation), and incubation periods of 17–21 d (Grallaria) and 15–20 d (Grallaricula). Grallaria nestlings are frequently fed earthworms (Oligochaeta) in addition to a variety of arthropods. Nestlings have pale skin (Grallaria) or dark skin (both genera), with pale or dark down (Grallaria) or red‐brown down (Grallaricula). Nestlings in both genera usually have brilliant orange mouth linings and cloacas, and usually fledge 15–19 d post hatching. Rapid probing, where adults rapidly thrust their bills into the nest and lining, is commonly observed across species during incubation and nestling periods, but its function remains unknown. Overall, our knowledge of the breeding biology of antpittas has improved significantly in recent years. However, much remains to be learned for most species. 相似文献
