We studied the water relations of 6 shrub and 3 tree species typical of the mediterranean climate region of central Spain to identify differential responses to water stress between and within species, and to determine if free proline concentration in leaves could be used as a water stress indicator. Predawn and midday water potentials (w) on a seasonal basis, relative water content (RWC), leaf mass per area, foliar nitrogen and free proline concentrations were measured. The lowest water potentials were observed at the end of the summer, with recovery to higher water potentials in the fall and winter seasons. Species differed regarding the annual w fluctuation. Thymus zygis, Halimium viscosum, Genista hirsuta and Juniperus oxycedrus exhibited the most negative midday and predawn w (both less than -6 MPa) with a large magnitude of response to changing conditions in soil moisture of the upper horizon of the soil. Lavandula pedunculata and Cistus ladanifer showed a moderate response. Quercus rotundifolia, Quercus faginea and Retama sphaerocarpa showed a modest response. The w of different size individuals of Quercus rotundifolia and Cistus ladanifer were compared. The annual w fluctuation was greater in small individuals as compared to large individuals. In every species, there was an increase in proline concentration of bulk leaf tissues when predawn w dropped below -5 MPa. Small plants of Cistus ladanifer reached lower water potentials and also higher concentration of proline than bigger plants. Proline could possibly be used as a drought stress indicator in every species except Q. rotundifolia. It is suggested that in addition to water stress avoidance due to deep root systems, some mechanisms of water stress tolerance may operate among shrub and tree species of central Spain.  相似文献

Cistus ladanifer L. (Cistaceae) is a Mediterranean shrub covering different kinds of soils in the Western Mediterranean area. This species has colonised several metalliferous areas (serpentine outcrops as well as human-polluted sites) throughout its distribution range, and is therefore an interesting species to study the possible effects on genetic diversity and differentiation produced by the colonisation of areas polluted with heavy metals. The genetic structure of 33 natural populations distributed across its entire natural distribution range (Morocco, Portugal and Spain) and growing on either metalliferous or non-metalliferous soils was investigated using chloroplast microsatellites. Population genetic parameters were estimated and genetic groups were identified using Bayesian inference. In addition, we compared the genetic diversity and differentiation among metallicolous and non-metallicolous populations within each Bayesian-defined group. The cpSSR data suggested that metallicolous populations of Cistus ladanifer have arisen through multiple independent evolutionary origins within two different chloroplast lineages. Evidence that the soil type provoked genetic bottlenecks in metallicolous populations or genetic differentiation among metallicolous and non-metallicolous populations was not observed. Historical factors are the main cause of the present genetic structure of C. ladanifer. The nature of tolerance to heavy metals as a species-wide trait in this shrub is discussed.  相似文献

In order to analyze the extent to which allelopathic action of Cistus ladanifer may influence the successional progression towards Mediterranean sub-climacic shrublands and the geographical distribution of other species, the inhibitory effect of Cistus ladanifer extracts on the germination of 20 Mediterranean species was analyzed. Five of the species tested were characteristic of maquis sub-climacic shrublands: Arbutus unedo, Adenocarpus argyrophyllus, Phillyrea angustifolia, Phillyrea latifolia, and Rhamnus alaternus. Tests were also carried out on 6 Cistaceae species in order to evaluate the auto-toxicity rate of allelopathic extracts: Halimium umbellatum subsp. viscosum, Halimium ocymoides, Cistus ladanifer, Cistus salvifolius, Cistus monspeliensis, and Cistus populifolius. Nine herbaceous species sharing the natural habitat with C. ladanifer were also examined. Results confirmed a clear inhibitory and delaying effect of aqueous C. ladanifer-leaf extracts on the germination of P. angustifolia, P. latifolia, R. alaternus, H. ocymoides, C. populifolius, Erysimum lagascae, Brassica barrelieri, Silene tridentata, and Moricandia moricandioides. Assays with soil collected below the canopy of the C. ladanifer community showed more pronounced inhibitory effect on sub-climacic shrub species than the aqueous extracts. In contrast, the opposite pattern was detected when analyzing the allelopathic effect of natural soil on Cistaceae and herbaceous species. Allelopathic compounds produced by C. ladanifer showed little auto-toxicity. The inhibitory effect of phytotoxic compounds accumulated in the jaral soil upon germination of A. unedo, B.␣barrelieri, and M. moricandioides was eliminated by heating soil at 150 °C for 10 min. Phenolic compounds (i.e. ferulic, p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, p-coumaric, and caffeic acids) and terpenes (i.e. α and β-pinene) with allelopathic documented effect were detected in the aqueous extracts and soil samples used in the analyses. We suggest that the allelopathic effect of C. ladanifer may influence the composition and structure of Mediterranean communities where the species is present, since it hinders the establishment of some sub-climacic species and may reduce the area occupied by numerous herbaceous species.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to compare the recovery dynamics in three shrub communities subjected to experimental burning and cutting, and situated on an altitudinal gradient. Climatic features are different in each area, but all had the common characteristic of very homogeneous vegetation cover before the disturbances, with only one shrub species clearly dominant, a different taxon in each area, and with different regeneration strategies. The first area was a heathland dominated by Calluna vulgaris, situated at an altitude of 1600 m, with a continental climate (mean annual precipitation 1320 mm). The second area was a heathland dominated by Erica australis, located at an altitude of 1000 m (mean annual precipitation 840 mm). The third area was a Cistus ladanifer shrubland, located at 900 m altitude, with a Mediterranean climate similar to that of the previous area, but with lower mean annual precipitation (470 mm). Erica australis recovers by vegetative resprouting, but Cistus ladanifer is an obligate seeder, as is Calluna vulgaris in these areas. Each experimental disturbance was carried out over 100 m2 in each area. Post-fire recovery is faster in Cistus ladanifer: 2 years after burning there was 40% cover vs. less than 20% in the other two species. However, recovery after cutting was similar for Cistus ladanifer and Erica australis. Calluna vulgaris recovers very slowly, with cover values below 20% even 10 years after both disturbances. Cover of dominant shrub species is negatively correlated with cover of herbaceous species. So different recovery of dominant species lead a different community dynamic in each area.  相似文献

As part of an integrated forest vegetation and soil survey, tree species composition (DBH 10 cm) was recorded in 95 plots of 0.1 ha, distributed over the principal physiographic units in the middle Caquetá area, Colombian Amazonia. A total of 1077 tree species was found, classified into 271 genera and 60 families. Leguminosae and Sapotaceae show high familial importance values in all physiographic units. Lauraceae, Chrysobalanaceae, Moraceae, and Lecythidaceae are more important on well drained (flood plain or upland) soils, while Palmae, Guttiferae, Bombacaceae, and Apocynaceae are more important in swamps and on podzolised (white sand'rs) soils. Plots on well drained soils show a lower degree of dominance than plots in swamps or on podzolised (white sand) soils. The composition of the most dominant species in the plots changes continuously. Most species (59%) are only recorded in one plot. Individual plot pairs generally show a low overlap of about 2–5 tree species, resulting in Jaccard coefficients below 20%.complementary to a previous forest classification based on TWINSPAN analyses, detrended and canonical correspondence analyses were carried out, using CANOCO 3.1. Despite of a low amount of tree species variance explained (only 6.2% by the first two canonical axes), meaningful patterns of tree species composition were recognised. These are most strongly related to drainage, flooding, humus forms, and soil nutrient status. Forest types are well separated in the CCA ordination diagram. The most frequently found tree species are listed according to their preference with respect to drainage, flooding, and soil nutrient status.Tree species composition in the well drained upland forests was analysed separately. In view of the model explaining high NW Amazonian tree species diversity on the basis of dense community packing and high beta diversity along soil gradients, the canonical analysis here focused on the effect of soils. By means of partial canonical ordination it was found that patterns of tree species composition depended significantly on soil properties, even though the edaphic component explains only a small fraction of the tree species variance. The results show that the well drained uplands of the middle Caquetá area are covered by a complex of two intergrading tree species assemblages. The first assemblage (community of Goupia glabra-Clathrotropis macrocarpa) is associated to some-what less poor, clayey soils developed in Andean origin deposits or Tertiary sediments from the Pebas formation. The second assemblage (community of Swartzia schomburgkii-Clathrotropis macrocarpa) shows affinities to very poor, loamy soils developed in parent materials derived from the Guiana shield. This simple dichotomous pattern of geology, soils, and forest types is incompatible with concepts of high soil heterogeneity and associated beta diversity controlling tree species diversity in well drained uplands of NW Amazonia. The gradient length of tree species in the detrended correspondence analysis was low (3.7 SD), also suggesting a low beta diversity.  相似文献

A desirable property of a diversity index is strict concavity. This implies that the pooled diversity of a given community sample is greater than or equal to but not less than the weighted mean of the diversity values of the constituting plots. For a strict concave diversity index, such as species richness S, Shannon's entropy H or Simpson's index 1-D, the pooled diversity of a given community sample can be partitioned into two non-negative, additive components: average within-plot diversity and between-plot diversity. As a result, species diversity can be summarized at various scales measuring all diversity components in the same units. Conversely, violation of strict concavity would imply the non-interpretable result of a negative diversity among community plots. In this paper, I apply this additive partition model generally adopted for traditional diversity measures to Aczél and Daróczy's generalized entropy of type . In this way, a parametric measure of -diversity is derived as the ratio between the pooled sample diversity and the average within-plot diversity that represents the parametric analogue of Whittaker's -diversity for data on species relative abundances.  相似文献

A recently described protocol for thein vitro production of ascomata was employed to determine the sexual incompatibility systems of five species ofCapronia. The formation of mature ascomata in isolates derived from single ascospores demonstrated thatC. epimyces, C. mansonii, andC. munkii n. sp. are homothallic. In contrast, fertile ascomata were observed only in mass-ascospore isolates and pairwise crosses between specific single-ascospore isolates inC. dactylotricha n. sp. andC. moravica. TheExophiala anamorphs ofC. dactylotricha andC. munkii are described and aPhialophora-like synanamorph is reported for the former species. Germinating ascospores ofC. munkii formed conidiogenous cells directly, while the ascospores of the remaining species germinated to produce germ tubes and hyphae. The application of the terms microcyclic conidiation to secondary conidium production and sclerotial body and stroma to the multicellular structures produced by species ofCapronia andExophiala are discussed.  相似文献

Introduction – Cistus ladanifer is an aromatic shrub that is widespread in the Mediterranean region. The labdanum exudate is used in the fragrance industry and has been characterised. However, there is not enough information about the phenolic content of the raw plant, the aerial part of it being a very rich source of bioactive compounds. Objective – Characterisation of the bioactive compounds of the raw plant and its aerial parts. Methodology – High‐performance liquid chromatography with diode array and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometric detection was used to carry out the comprehensive characterisation of a Cistus ladanifer shrub aqueous extract. Two different MS techniques were coupled to HPLC: time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry. Results – Many well‐known compounds present in Cistus ladanifer were characterised, such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, ellagitanins, hexahydroxydiphenoyl and derivatives, and other compounds. Conclusion – The method described simultaneously separated a wide range of phenolic compounds and the proposed characterisation of the major compounds of this extract was carried out. It is important to highlight that, to our knowledge, this is the first time that a Cistus ladanifer aqueous extract from the raw plant has been characterised. Autotoxic species are those which adversely affect their own seeds’ germination and/or seedling development. Cistus ladanifer L (labdanum or jara) has been shown to have a pattern of allelopathic behaviour against the herbs that share its habitat. The present work studied whether an autotoxic effect also exists. The aqueous solution obtained from washing jara leaves was found by itself to inhibit germination and cotyledon emergence of the species’ seeds. When these same trials were carried out in soils, autotoxicity was observed only from leaves and soils collected in winter. This was so both in soils collected away from the influence of the jaral to which was added the greatest concentration of aqueous extract prepared from the leaves, and in soils collected within the jaral, except that in the latter group of soils germination was inhibited with or without the addition of C. ladanifer extracts. This autotoxic behaviour could be involved in the species’ own population control, and would explain the scant self-regeneration within established C. ladanifer stands.  相似文献

Summary A restriction fragment of DNA carrying the P gene was cloned in the high copy number plasmid RSF2124. Cells harbouring this new plasmid RSF2124/E complement Pam80 phage. A lac promoter-operator region (lacP), produced by EcoRI digestion of plasmid pKB252, was inserted into RSF2124/glE such that induction of the lac promoter by IPTG or lactose leads to increased production of the P gene product. A high amount of P protein in E. coli cells results in a slow inhibition of bacterial DNA synthesis, suggesting that the initiation reaction is blocked by P protein. Synthesis of DNA proceeds normally under these conditions.Nonsuppressing groPA15 mutant bacteria which are unable to support the replication of wild-type (wt), acquire the ability to replicate Pam80 phage but not wt when they are transformed with a plasmid carrying the P gene. When harbouring a plasmid containing the mutant Pamber 80 gene, groPA15 mutants are able to support the replication of wt phage when infected at a high multiplicity. Summary The relationships of Agropyron intermedium chromosomes in two wheat-Agropyron addition series were determined. Chromosome pairing behaviour revealed that the alien chromosome in lines TAF-2 and L7 of Vilmorin-A. intermedium set are homologous to the alien chromosomes in lines P and C of the Caribo-A. intermedium set respectively. Localization of alcohol dehydrogenase isozyme genes in Vilmorin-Agropyron addition line L4 and in Caribo-Agropyron line O indicated relationships with wheat chromosomes of homoeologous group 4.  相似文献

4-O-Glycosylation of 2-azidoethyl 2,3,6-tri-O-benzyl-4-O-(2,3-di-O-benzyl-6-O-benzoyl--D-galactopyranosyl)--D-glucopyranoside with a disaccharide donor, 4-trichloroacetamidophenyl 4,6-di-O-acetyl-2-deoxy-3-O-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl--D-galactopyranosyl)-1-thio-2-trichloroacetamido--D-galactopyranoside, in dichloromethane in the presence of N-iodosuccinimide and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid resulted in a tetrasaccharide, 2-azidoethyl (2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl--D-galactopyranosyl)-(1 3)-(4,6-di-O-acetyl-2-deoxy-2-trichloroacetamido--D-galactopyranosyl)-(1 4)-(2,3-di-O-benzyl-6-O-benzoyl--D-galactopyranosyl)-(1 4)-2,3,6-tri-O-benzyl--D-glucopyranoside, in 69% yield. Selective 3-O-glycosylation of 2-azidoethyl 2,3,6-tri-O-benzyl-4-O-(2,6-di-O-benzyl--D-galactopyranosyl)--D-glucopyranoside with thioglycoside methyl (ethyl 5-acetamido-4,7,8,9-tetra-O-acetyl-3,5-dideoxy-2-thio-D-glycero--D-galacto-2-nonulopyranosyl)oate in acetonitrile in the presence of N-iodosuccinimide and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid afforded 2-azidoethyl [methyl (5-acetamido-4,7,8,9-tetra-O-acetyl-3,5-dideoxy-D-glycero--D-galacto-2-nonulopyranosyl)oate]-(2 3)-(2,6-di-O-benzyl--D-galactopyranosyl)-(1 4)-2,3,6-tri-O-benzyl--D-glucopyranoside, the selectively protected derivative of the oligosaccharide chain of GM3 ganglioside, in 79% yield. Sialic acids and the majorO-glycosidic oligosaccharide of glycophorin MK from monkey (Japanese monkey,Macaca fuscata) erythrocyte membranes were characterized.N-Glycolylneuraminic acid (neu5Gc) was found as the major sialic acid, which was confirmed by gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry as the trimethylsilyl methyl ester. ThreeO-glycosidic oligosaccharide units were obtained from a tryptic glycopeptide that contained all of the carbohydrate units in glycophorin MK by mild alkaline borohydride/borotritide treatment. Carbohydrate analyses of the oligosaccharides revealed that they were composed of Neu5Gc, galactose andN-acetylgalactosaminitol in the molar ratios of 111 (trisaccharide), 211 (tetrasaccharide) and 111 (pentasaccharide). The content of oligosaccharide units was estimated to be 1125 for penta-, tetra- and trisaccharide, respectively, based on the yields, the molecular weight, and the number of oligosaccharide attachment sites in the amino-acid sequence. The tetrasaccharide was the major oligosaccharide and its structure was proposed to be Neu5Gc2-3Gal1-3[Neu5Gc2-6]GalNAcol.  相似文献

We report here studies which characterize further the interaction ofN,N-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide with cytochromec oxidase leading to inhibition of H+ translocation by the enzyme. Further evidence is presented to show that the inhibition results from a real interaction of DCCD with the enzyme and cannot be accounted for by uncoupling and, contrary to recent criticisms, this interaction occurs specifically with subunit III of the enzyme even at relatively high inhibitor-to-enzyme stoichiometries. Summary Olfactometer tests with Asobara tabida (Nees 1834), a larval endo-parasitoid of frugivorous Drosophilidae showed that females are attracted to the odour of host food: a suspension of living yeast. This attraction decreased as the fermenting medium grew older and became less likely to contain suitable host stages. Olfactometer tests with — what was considered to be — A. tabida from two different microhabitats (fermenting fruits and decaying plants) showed a genetically determined difference in microhabitat odour preference between the two microhabitat strains. Each strain preferred the odour of its own microhabitat. This odour preference was not modified by larval conditioning. Hybridization tests indicated that we were dealing with two sibling species: A. tabida and A. rufescens (Foerster 1862), reproductively isolated by a pre-mating isolation mechanism only. Enforced matings resulted in fertile female offspring. Some small morphological differences were detected. The two species live sympatrically, although each inhabits and is most attracted to its own microhabitat.  相似文献

Studying biodiversity change in existing typical ecosystems of the world under possible global climate change and local human activities is important for diversity conservation. An adapted forest dynamics model is used to simulate tree diversity change of the remaining primary mixed-broadleaved Korean pine forest (RPMKPF) in northeast China under global climate change and local human activities for the next 50 years. Human activities include logging, which removes all big trees (DBH > 50 cm), removing all individuals of each single species and all species of each functional type (shade tolerant, shade intolerant and medium type tree species). As results for RPMKPF, the index of tree diversity decreases under climate change, but it increases significantly under a combination of climate change and logging. Removing all individuals of each single species significantly affects the tree diversity of the ecosystem. After the removal of shade tolerant species, both and c indices of tree diversity experience a significant change. The index decreases significantly under climate change when shade intolerant or medium type tree species are removed, but the c index does not change significantly. The results of this study have implications for tree diversity management in RPMKPF under climate change and human activities.  相似文献

The purified isopropylmalate synthase of Alcaligenes eutrophus H 16 reacted with the following -keto acids and acyl-coenzyme A derivatives (in the sequence of decreasing affinities): -ketoisovalerate, -keto-n-valerate, -ketobutyrate and pyruvate; acetyl-CoA, propionyl-CoA, butyryl-CoA. malonyl-CoA, valeryl-CoA, and crotonyl-CoA. -Ketoisocaproate, however, is a strong inhibitor of the enzyme. All reactions catalyzed by isopropylmalate synthase were inhibited to the same extent by the endproduct l-leucine. the substrate saturation curves of -ketoisovalerate or other -keto acids and of acetyl-coenzyme A or other acyl-CoA derivatives had intermediary plateau regions; the Hill coefficient alternated between n H -values higher and lower than 1.0, indicating changes from positive to negative and from negative to positive cooperativity for the substrates. The products, isopropylmalate and free coenzyme A, showed competitive inhibition patterns against both substrates (-ketoisovalerate and acetyl-CoA). Free coenzyme A (1 M) inactivated the enzyme irreversibly. The 3-phosphate of coenzyme A and the free carboxyl group of -ketoisovalerate were involved in optimal binding of these substrates, but 3-dephospho-acetyl-coenzyme A and the methylester of -ketoisovalerate were also converted by this enzyme. Nine different F2 families of peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] were analyzed for linkage relationships between 14 morphological and two isozyme loci. Linkage was detected between weeping (We) and white flower (W), 33 cM; double flower (Dl) and pillar (Br), 10 cM; and flesh color (Y) and malate dehydrogenase (Mdh1), 26 cM. A leaf variant phenotypically distinct from the previously reported wavy-leaf (Wa) mutant in peach was found in progeny of Davie II. The new willow-leaf character (designated Wa2) was closely linked (0.4 cM) to a new dwarf phenotype (designated Dw3). Two families derived from the pollen-fertile cultivar White Glory segregated for pollen sterility, but segregation did not follow a 31 ratio. Evidence is presented suggesting that White Glory possesses a pollen-sterility gene (designated Ps2) that is non-allelic to the previously reported pollen-sterility gene (Ps) in peach. Ps2 was linked to both weeping (We-Ps2, 15.5 cM) and white flower (Ps2-W, 25.3 cM). A genomic map of peach containing 83 RAPD, one isozyme, and four morphological markers was generated using an F2 family obtained by selfing an NC174RL x Pillar F1. A total of 83 RAPD markers were assigned to 15 linkage groups. Various RAPD markers were linked to morphological traits. Bulked segregant analysis was used to identify RAPD markers flanking the red-leaf (Gr) and Mdh1 loci in the NC174RL x Pillar and Marsun x White Glory F2 families, respectively. Three markers flanking Mdh1 and ten markers flanking Gr were identified. The combination of RAPD markers and bulked segregant analysis provides an efficient method of identifying markers flanking traits of interest. Markers linked to traits that can only be scored late in development are potentially useful for marker-aided selection in trees. The reaction of methanol dehydrogenase with cytochrome c L from Methylophaga marina and the reactions of the non-physiological substrates, Wurster's blue and ascorbic acid, with both proteins were studied as a function of temperature (4–32 °C), pressure (1–2000 bar) and ionic strength using the optical high pressure stopped-flow method. The thermodynamic parameters H, S and V were determined for all reactions where electron transfers are involved. These data allowed the determination of the Maxwell relationships which proved the internal thermodynamic consistency of the system under study. Four fluorescence parameters [Fv/Fm = the intrinsic efficiency of energy conversion via photosystem 2 (PS2); Fv/Fm= the efficiency of energy conversion via PS2 in the light; P = fraction of absorbed radiant energy utilized for photosynthesis; and D = fraction of absorbed radiant energy dissipated as heat] were measured on leaves of seven species of succulents having epidermal windows. While the function of leaf windows has reportedly been to increase absorption of radiant energy and, hence, the rate of photosynthesis in these species, recent evidence indicates that this translucent portion of epidermal tissue, lacking chlorophyll, may also result in photoinhibition in these species, especially for those with growth habits aboveground. Species with aboveground and belowground growth habits were compared with their leaf windows covered with reflective tape and with windows unobstructed. Results showed no increase in photoinhibition for these species resulting from the radiant energy penetrating the window tissue. Although the efficiency of the photosynthetic mechanism was not significantly influenced by the additional radiant energy provided by the window for individual species, there were significant differences in the efficiencies of radiant energy capture (Fv/Fm) and utilization (P) between the two growth habits. Species with an aboveground growth habit were less efficient in radiant energy utilization compared with the species having a belowground growth habit.  相似文献
