B-chromosomes were studied in two Spanish populations of Locusta migratoria. Both exhibit a high frequency of B-carrying individuals (75% and 94%). In both the B-chromosomes are mitotically unstable and they accumulate in the male germ line. The mean rate of accumulation is 28.5% in Baños de la Encina and 31.9% in Carboneras. There are no significant differences in mean cell chiasma frequency and between-cell variance of chiasmata between follicles with different number of B's within individual males. Likewise, there are no significant differences in mean cell chiasma frequency and between-cell variance between males with and without supernumeraries. However, a significant negative correlation exists between mean chiasma frequency and the rate of accumulation.  相似文献

The B-chromosome system of myrmeleotettix maculatus (thunb.)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
G. M. Hewitt  B. John 《Chromosoma》1967,21(2):140-162
It is established that in populations of Myrmeleotettix maculatus with B-chromosomes these chromosomes occur at stable frequencies and are present to the same extent in both the males and the females of the same population. It is also established that the B-chromosome content of a population is positively correlated with its chiasma frequency and that, within a population, individuals with single B-chromosomes tend to have higher chiasma frequencies than individuals lacking B-chromosomes. Since this effect is not increased by the addition of further supernumeraries it is argued that selection operates in favour of individuals with single B-chromosomes. Finally it is shown that the level of B-chromosomes in a population is related to temperature and especially to rainfall so that B-chromosomes are absent from populations in climatically stringent environments.  相似文献

Using the C-banding technique, the morphology and meiotic behaviour of four different types of B-chromosomes present in several populations of Eyprepocnemis plorans have been studied. The possible relationship between these four types is discussed. The analysis of chiasma frequency in A and B-chromosomes suggests the existence of interchromosomal interference and demonstrates that the chiasma frequency of B-s depends on the genetic background of the individual carrying them.  相似文献

The B-chromosome system of the grasshopper Melanoplus femur-rubrum   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
In a sample of 85 males of the grasshopper Melanoplus femur-rubrum, three different supernumerary chromosomes (B-chromosomes) were observed: a medium-sized metacentric, BM, present in 12.9% of the males and two small telocentrics, BT and Bt, present in 8.2% and 3.5% of the males, respectively. The BM element is mitotically stable, while the BT and Bt elements are mitotically unstable, exhibiting numerical variation among testicular follicles. The mean number of B's per male (testis) is 1.00, 1.62, and 1.38 for the BM, BT, and Bt elements, respectively. A study of chiasma frequency among A-chromosomes revealed that there are no significant differences among the zero B and various B classes either for chiasma frequency or for the variation in chiasma frequency between individuals. There was, however, evidence for a higher within-individual variation in B-containing males when these were pooled. Cells with two Bt-chromosomes were regularly missing the smallest pair of A-chromosomes, suggesting that the Bt element induces non-disjunction of a pair of A-chromosomes and, possibly, that the Bt-chromosome is derived from the missing A-chromosome.Portions of this study were submitted by R. A marginal population ofTettigidea lateralis was found to be polymorphic with respect to a large, mitotically stable supernumerary (B) chromosome. Male and female individuals may carry one or two B-chromosomes. In the male sex the frequency of individuals with one B was 33.8% whereas that of 2B-carriers was 2.9 %. A comparison with a small sample of female individuals suggests similar frequencies of B-chromosome carriers in the two sexes. The pycnocity cycle of the B's is virtually identical to that of the X chromosome which is always distinguishable by virtue of its larger size and other structural details. Persistent heterochromatic associations between the B and the X, which may last until metaphaseanaphase I, lead to a preferential migration of the B with the X to the same pole in male carriers of a single supernumerary. This distortional segregation of the B-chromosome may produce a differential transmission of the supernumerary to the two sexes if the various types of gametes are equally functional. Achiasmate, persistent B-B associations in 2B individuals can also cause segregation-distortion. The two supernumeraries segregate to the same pole in approximately 1/3 of the spermatocytes, but their poleward movement relative to that of the X is random. Both –B and +B individuals show only a single chiasma per individual bivalent. However, the presence of a single B raises very significantly the frequency at which the chiasma forms at the extreme distal ends of the L1-L2 and M3-M4 autosomes. The effect on recombination exerted by the supernumeraries and the possible implications of the segregation-distortion system ofT. lateralis are discussed in the light of recent studies on comparable B-chromosome polymorphisms.Research supported by N.R.C. of Canada.  相似文献

Summary T. aestivum var. Chinese Spring (monosomic 5B and 5D, respectively) was crossed with S. cereale (with and without B-chromosomes). The resulting nullisomic 5B hybrids exhibited a high degree of chromosome association both at 20°C and 10°C. The presence of B-chromosomes reduced association slightly whether 5B was present or not.In nullisomic 5D hybrids B-chromosomes of rye raise chromosome association at 20°C when compared to hybrids with 5D, with as well as without, B's. At 10°C, due to the absence of the Ltp gene on 5D, chromosome association in nullisomic 5D hybrids is low, and no effects of rye B-chromosomes is detectable. The hypothesis that B-chromosomes of rye carry (an) asynaptic gene(s) decreasing effective pairing, and (an) independent post-synaptic gene(s) increasing chiasma frequency on effective pairing sites, is presented. The work was supported by a fellowship of the Gulbenkian Foundation and partly carried out while the author was at the Department of Genetics, Agricultural University, Wageningen, the Netherlands  相似文献

Two karyotypic variants were recognized in populations of Acanthophyllum laxiusculum Schiman-Czeika. Variant A had 2N = 30 and variant B showed the presence of 0 to 3 B-chromosomes in addition to 2N = 30 chromosomes. Analysis of chromosome behaviour at meiosis showed that the presence of B-chromosomes increases chiasma frequency in A-chromosomes; this effect was higher for plants with odd numbers of B-chromosomes compared with plants with even numbers of B-chromosomes. Comparisons of variants A and B, suggests that B-chromosomes have an effect pollen stainability and seed production. It seems that the presence of B-chromosomes may increase pollen stainability and seed production in variant B.  相似文献

Transmission of B-chromosomes to S1 progenies and progenies of crosses involving parents with different numbers of B-chromosomes in Iseilema laxum Hack. is reported. The mean number of B's remained the same in S1 progenies. In the progenies of the crosses, the mean number of B's increased and the range of their number in the offspring also is wider when they are transmitted through the male parent. The inheritance of B's is more or less normal on the female side. The phenomena of nondisjunction and precocious division of B's are more frequent in the male parent. Apart from nondisjunction and precocious divisions in the PMC's, there seems to be some post-meiotic mechanism responsible for the wide range and increase in the mean number of B's in crosses where the male parents contain B-chromosomes.  相似文献

B-Chromosomes ofAllium flavum, A. stamineum andA. carinatum were C-banded. InA. flavum different types of B's were found, one of them possessing a nucleolus organizer. In the B's ofA. flavum andA. stamineum the banding patterns resemble those found in the standard chromosomes. The B inA. carinatum is only terminally banded. InA. flavum chiasma localization in the B's appears to be dependent on C-band location, just as is the case in the A-chromosomes. An increase in B's was found to cause a small (but significant) increase in chiasma frequency in the PMC's. This may result from an alteration in the nucleotype by the B's.  相似文献

Influence of B-chromosomes on meiosis in pearl millet   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

B-chromosome behaviour and the effects of B's on the endophenotype were studied in the third back-cross progeny of a cross between non-B and B-carrying parents ofPennisetum typhoides Stapf et Hubb. In the experimental material a regular increase in B-chromosome chiasma frequency and an increase in the variation of mean chiasma frequency with increased number of B's was observed. When four or more B-chromosomes were present quadrivalents occurred more frequently. In these respects the experimental material differed from the B-carrying parent. B's had no effect on the mean chiasma frequency of A-chromosomes when present in numbers of up to and including four but when present in numbers of more than four had a depressing effect. The variation of the mean chiasma frequency of the A-chromosomes increased with increasing number of B's. No correlation was observed between A-chromosome chiasma frequencies and B-chromosome chiasma frequencies. In the experimental material B's when present in larger numbers i.e. more than four had deleterious effects on A-chromosome behaviour and on fertility. In the effects of B's on the endophenotypic characters the experimental material differed from the B-carrying parent. It is suggested that the behaviour and effects of B's on the endophenotypic characters are the result of interaction between the A-chromosome genotype and the B-chromosomes.  相似文献

Upto 6 B-chromosomes occurred in natural populations of the fodder grass Iseilema laxum Hack. They were smaller than the A-chromosomes and stained darker. Although the number of B's varied in different PMC's of even the same anther presumably due to the phenomena of nondisjunction and precocious divisions, it was possible to assign a definite number to a particular plant. As seen from pachytene morphology, three types of B's were seen. More than one type can also occur in the same plant. Pairing can take place between homo-as well as heteromorphic B's resulting in bivalents. B-chromosomes in Iseilema laxum appear to have a common origin.  相似文献

The electrophoretic patterns of esterase (E-1), alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) isozymes were studied in two Spanish populations of the lily Scilla autumnalis with B-chromosome carrying individuals. The E-1 isozyme activity appears only in those individuals with B-chromosomes. None of the bulbs free of B's show it. Five bulbs, mosaic for B-content, were identified. Electrophoretic analysis shows that these bulbs are characterised by mosaicism for E-1 isozyme activity. An analysis of individual roots by both electrophoretic and cytological methods shows that tissue mosaicism for B-content correlates with tissue mosaicism for E-1 isozyme activity. The electrophoretic analysis of different roots from bulbs heterozygous for the Est-1 locus indicates that the structural gene for E-1 is not located on the B-chromosome itself. Rather there is a derepressor effect of Bs on E-1 isozyme activity. Since ADH and GOT patterns are unaffected by the presence of B-chromosomes it is clear that they do not exhibit a generalised derepressor effect.  相似文献

The heterochromatin characteristics and meiotic behavior of the B-chromosome system of the pocket mouse, Perognathus baileyi, are described. B-chromosomes are associated both with a meiotic accumulation mechanism and with an increase in average chiasma frequency in the A-chromosome set in males. Three morphological classes of B-chromosomes are recognizable, and the mechanisms of origin of each are discussed.  相似文献

Karyotype comparisons of both parents and progeny from single pair matings in the grasshopper Myrmeleotettix maculatus have shown that there is an accumulation of the large mitotically stable B-chromosome when transmitted through the female. This is presumed to result from a preferential segregation of univalent B-chromosomes at the first division of female meiosis and occurs irrespective of whether the B's are odd or even in number. In the male there is a loss of B-chromosomes. This loss does not appear to be due simply to the lagging and elimination of B-chromosomes in meiosis but probably involves sperm formation or function. When the balance of the gain and loss after one generation is calculated, it shows large overall accumulation in crosses involving individuals from a population in Wales, and a slight loss in individuals from a population in East Anglia. Such differences in transmission rates may be responsible for differences in B-frequency between populations. Since the B-chromosome frequency of these two populations has remained stable over five years, possible forces in the maintenance of the equilibria are examined. Females with B-chromosomes produce more aneuploid embryos than 0B females, but neither this cause of inviability nor general embryo mortality seem sufficient to produce an equilibrium situation. It is necessary to postulate that progeny with more than 2B chromosomes are inviable in order to approach equilibria. The presence of B-chromosomes in females has also led to the formation of polyploid embryos. The possible involvement of repetitive DNA in the formation of unreduced egg nuclei and preferential segregation is discussed.  相似文献

In A. frigida Willd., B-chromosomes are reported for the first time. Their number was limited to 2 in all the cells studied. Analysis of chromosome behaviour at meiosis showed that B-chromosomes reduced the mean chiasma frequency and modified the phenotypic and biochemical characteristics of the plants.  相似文献

Six diploid populations of Lolium rigidum were used in crosses with a standard homozygous line of Lolium temulentum in order to analyse the variation in the effect of B chromosomes on homoeologous pairing in the interspecific hybrid. — Large differences in chiasma frequency were found, both between the progeny of the different populations and, in one case, between the progeny of different plants from the same population. That this variation was due to differences in B chromosome genotype was ruled out by the use of appropriate 1B Lolium rigidum parents. It is concluded therefore that the effect of B's on homoeologous pairing in this interspecific hybrid can be modified quite substantially by the A chromosome genotype of the parents.  相似文献

In Atractomorpha bedeli the frequencies of males with B-chromosomes in the males from the Tofuro-ato population were 21, 30, 32, 40, and 26%, respectively, over five years. Numbers of B's (0 to 7) in the primary spermatocytes were usually constant within the follicles but were variable among the follicles within the individuals. In males from the Okazyo-ato population, 35% contained B's in their primary spermatocytes. The cells of the gastric caeca were observed in 8 males with B's in the primary spermatocytes but no cells of the gastric caeca contained B's. Cells of ovariole walls and those of gastric caeca were analysed in 80 females from the same population; none of them contained B's. These facts indicate that B's are present in the germ line but absent in the somatic line. The difference between the germ line and the somatic one was explained on the basis of elimination of B's from the somatic cells. The inter-follicular variation in number of B's was ascribed to mitotic non-disjunction in the germ line prior to differentiation of the follicles.Contribution No. 86 from the Institute of Biology, Oita University.  相似文献

Samples were taken from twenty three Australian mainland populations of the shorthorned grasshopper, Phaulacridium vittatum. Five of these populations were found to be polymorphic for B-chromosomes. The anaphase I segregation of the B-chromosome appeared to be random with respect to the X (contra Jackson and Cheung, 1967). The B-chromosomes did not appear to influence chiasma frequency in the population in which they were found.  相似文献

Cytogenetics of pearl millet   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary The somatic karyotype of pearl millet Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke. (2n = 14) has been studied in several cultivars, but few cytological markers have been discovered which could help in the easy identification of the chromosomes. Analysis of pachytene bivalents permits such identification but is feasible only in a few cultivars. Recently, several lines having telocentric chromosomes have been produced and classified but their potentialities as cytogenetic tools have yet to be explored. Some African populations of pearl millet carry B-chromosomes in their karyotype. Cytogenetics of B-chromosomes has been reported in great detail. Bs undergo spontaneous changes to produce deficient- and iso-chromosomes. The main effect of B-chromosomes is on chiasma frequency which is exerted by the relative amounts of chiasma promoting euchromatin and the chiasma depressing heterochromatin in the Bs. Haploid plants occur occasionally and sometimes show a low degree of seed set, offering a possibility of establishing homozygous inbred lines. Cytogenetics of several spontaneous and induced autotetraploids have been reported. In general quadrivalent formation between the seven sets of four homologues was random. Seed set of the autotetraploids could be improved by selection; improved seed fertility was found to be associated with increased chiasma frequency, increased quadrivalent frequency and regular distribution of chromosomes at anaphase I. Genes controlling morphological characters of plant phenotype segregate independent of those controlling fertility and in pearl millet polyploidy per se is not limiting to plant vigour. Primary trisomics represent the best studied among the aneuploids of pearl millet. All the seven primary trisomics have been identified and described. Some were used in assigning genes to specific chromosomes but in general trisomies have poor vigour and fertility, and show low frequency of transmission. Apart from B-chromosomes, cytogenetics of interchanges has been the best studied aspect of pearl millet. The frequency of co-orientation of an interchange complex at metaphase I, which determines the fertility or sterility of the interchange heterozygote, is influenced by the genetic background and thus is theoretically amenable for selection leading to improved fertility of the heterozygote. Interchange tester-stocks have been assembled which can be used to identify the chromosomes involved in any newly obtained interchange. A complex interchange line involving all the chromosomes of the complement has also been produced, but the ring-of-fourteen produces total male and female sterility.Genotypic control of mitosis and meiosis has been reported, with reference to chromosome numerical mosaicism, multiploid sporocytes, desynapsis and chromosome fragmentation, and male sterility. Pearl millet being a largely outbreeding species, forced inbreeding was mainly found to result in loss of morphological vigour and reduction in mean chiasma frequency per PMC. Interspecific hybrids between pearl millet and several related species have been cytologically investigated and homology of the seven chromosomes of pearl millet with seven of the fourteen chromosomes of P. purpureum has been demonstrated. Cytogenetic evidence from haploids, autopolyploids and interspecific hybrids has indications to suggest that the haploid number of x = 7 is derived from x = 5, but the evidence is inconclusive and needs critical evaluation.  相似文献
