The discovery of immense organic clouds of gas embedded in the dusty regions of our Galaxy is of tremendous importance to the origin of life. It is within these clouds that the formation of stars and planetary systems is believed to take place. The collapse of these clouds to form stars takes place in a very small fraction of the astronomical lifetime of a star. CIRCUMSTELLAR AND INTERSTELLAR SYNTHESIS OF ORGANIC MOLECULES   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We review the formation and evolution of complex circumstellar and interstellar molecules. A number of promising chemical routes are discussed which may lead to the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules, fullerenes, and unsaturated hydrocarbon chains in the outflows from stars. Some of the problems with these chemical schemes are pointed out as well. We also review the role of grains in the formation of complex molecules in interstellar molecular clouds. This starts with the formation of simple molecules in an ice grain mantle. UV photolysis and/or thermal polymerization can convert some of these simple molecules into more complex polymeric structures. Some of these species may be released to the gas phase, particularly in the warm regions around newly formed stars. Methanol and formaldehyde seem to play an important role in this drive towards molecular complexity and their chemistry is traced in some detail.  相似文献

The synthesis of a family of polymer stars with arms of varied tacticities is discussed. The effect of polymer tacticity on the physical properties of these polymer stars is presented. Dipentaerythritol cores support six poly(lactic acid) (PLA) arms. Lewis acidic tin and aluminum catalysts control the polymerization to afford polymer stars of variable tacticity. The analysis of these polymers by NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry reveals the effects of tacticity control on the physical properties of the polymer stars. Preliminary decomposition studies suggest that the biodegradation profile of a polymer star may also be tuned by stereochemical control. This is the first systematic altering of tacticity in PLA polymer stars, showing that polymer tacticity can have a great impact on star properties.  相似文献

Recent development of research on extrasolar planets are reviewed. About 120 extrasolar Jupiter-mass planets have been discovered through the observation of Doppler shift in the light of their host stars that is caused by acceleration due to planet orbital motions. Although the extrasolar planets so far observed may be limited to gas giant planets and their orbits differ from those of giant planets in our Solar system (Jupiter and Saturn), the theoretically predicted probability of existence of extrasolar terrestrial planets that can have liquid water ocean on their surface is comparable to that of detectable gas giant planets. Based on the number of extrasolar gas giants detected so far, about 100 life-sustainable planets may exist within a range of 200 light years. Indirect observation of extrasolar terrestrial planets would be done with space telescopes within several years and direct one may be done within 20 years. The latter can detect biomarkers on these planets as well.  相似文献

A recent thermodynamics and information study examined the basis of a scaling rule for simple living organisms. The present paper examines a scaling rule for the relationship between the integrated scaled metabolic energy and the mass of a system for a wide range of masses, from animals to the 4He cores of main-sequence stars, considering the effect of gravitational energy. The expected specific scaled energy for animals and the 4He cores of main-sequence stars is 1600 times greater than the specific scaled energy for fundamental living organisms, such as unicellular organisms. This difference results from their organization in a gravitational field or the lack thereof.  相似文献

The phenotypic characteristics of 26 ptg mutations in T4 gene 23 are described. All were located in three tight clusters in that gene and, by definition of ptg mutations, all produced giant phage. Intermediate petite phage, which invariably made up a substantial fraction of the progeny of these mutants, appeared to be a unique product of gene 23 mutations. Isometric petite phage were produced in significant numbers by strains with mutations at only 4 of the 10 sites identified with the PTG phenotype. The data presented indicate that there was little if any variation in the lengths of the normal, the intermediate petite, and the isometric petite classes. The frequencies of those capsid types were fairly specific for the individual mutations. The giant capsids that resulted from ptg mutations also had characteristic length distributions, of which three types were distinguished. These highly specific effects of gene 23 ptg mutations on capsid length regulation of T4 imply that the product of gene 23, gp23, plays a significant role in controlling the length of its capsid. The restrictions these observations place on a model for T4 capsid length regulation are discussed briefly.  相似文献

Within the last few decades, the existence of protoplanetary disks has been inferred on the basis of emission from T Tauri stars that does not arise from a stellar photosphere. More recently, high-resolution interferometric techniques have resolved the dust continuum emission, and millimeter arrays have imaged circumstellar molecular gas. These measurements corroborate the disk interpretation; many T Tauri stars are surrounded by centrifugally supported circumstellar disks with radial sizes of order 100 AU. Further proof issues from Hubble Space Telescope images of disks that are illuminated externally. The morphology of circumstellar dust is revealed in striking detail and affirms the prevalence and dimensions of disks imaged at longer wavelengths. The fate of circumstellar material around young stars must be understood in order to discern the degree to which these disks are proto-planetary. Observational studies of circumstellar disks which are in the beginning of a dispersal phase are challenging and place great demands on astronomical techniques. Nevertheless, the connection between disks and the formation of extra-solar planets is supported by increasing circumstantial evidence. Optically thin dust continuum emission persists in T Tauri stars and is detected around some young main sequence stars. Since the dust is subject to rapid dispersal by radiation pressure and Poynting-Robertson drag, some mechanism of replenishment is required. Disks around nearby young main sequence stars show evidence for inner voids and disk asymmetries that should also disappear on short timescales. The presence of large orbiting bodies which collide and interact with the resulting debris can explain both the persistence of optically thin dust and the maintenance of otherwise-ephemeral dynamical features. Together with recent detections of extra-solar planets, these observations lend some support to the hypothesis that circumstellar disks commonly give birth to planetary systems.  相似文献

The flagellar pocket of the bloodstream form of the African sleeping sickness parasite Trypanosoma brucei contains material that binds the beta-d-galactose-specific lectin ricin (Brickman, M. J., and Balber, A. E. (1990) J. Protozool. 37, 219-224). Glycoproteins were solubilized from bloodstream form T. brucei cells in 8 M urea and 3% SDS and purified by ricin affinity chromatography. Essentially all binding of ricin to these glycoproteins was abrogated by treatment with peptide N-glycosidase, showing that the ricin ligands are attached to glycoproteins via N-glycosidic linkages to asparagine residues. Glycans released by peptide N-glycosidase were resolved by Bio-Gel P-4 gel filtration into two fractions: a low molecular mass mannose-rich fraction and a high molecular mass galactose and N-acetylglucosamine-rich fraction. The latter fraction was further separated by high pH anion exchange chromatography and analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry, one- and two-dimensional NMR, electrospray mass spectrometry, and methylation linkage analysis. The high molecular mass ricin-binding N-glycans are based on a conventional Manalpha1-3(Manalpha1-6)Manbeta1-4-GlcNAcbeta1-4GlcNAc core structure and contain poly-N-acetyllactosamine chains. A significant proportion of these structures are extremely large and of unusual structure. They contain an average of 54 N-acetyllactosamine (Galbeta1-4GlcNAc) repeats per glycan, linked mostly by -4GlcNAcbeta1-6Galbeta1-interrepeat linkages, with an average of one -4GlcNAcbeta1-3(-4GlcNAcbeta1-6)Galbeta1- branch point in every six repeats. These structures, which also bind tomato lectin, are twice the size reported for the largest mammalian poly-N-acetyllactosamine N-linked glycans and also differ in their preponderance of -4GlcNAcbeta1-6Galbeta1- over -4GlcNacbeta1-3Galbeta1- interrepeat linkages. Molecular modeling suggests that -4GlcNAcbeta1-6Galbeta1- interrepeat linkages produce relatively compact structures that may give these giant N-linked glycans unique physicochemical properties. Fluorescence microscopy using fluorescein isothiocyanatericin indicates that ricin ligands are located mainly in the flagellar pocket and in the endosomal/lysosomal system of the trypanosome.  相似文献

A 31-year-old woman presented with a cystic mass in the left breast. At fine needle aspiration (FNA), the mass felt gritty, and a firm mass remained after drainage of the cyst. Cytologic examination of the aspirate showed mononucleated malignant cells and an array of bizarre malignant multinucleated giant cells. A diagnosis of carcinoma of breast with malignant giant cells was made. Subsequent histologic study of the lesion showed a central cystic cavity lined by bizarre tumor giant cells. Immunocytochemistry and lectin cytochemistry confirmed the epithelial nature of the malignant giant cells. The entities that may yield giant cells on FNA of breast masses are discussed.  相似文献

An extensive 2013 mass mortality event along the West Coast of North America due to Sea Star Wasting Disease (SSWD) has affected at least 20 species of sea stars. Among environmental factors potentially contributing to the timing of the current outbreak, increased coastal water temperatures are hypothesized to have contributed to previous and current outbreaks of SSWD. With a laboratory experiment, we tested whether cooler temperatures, similar to average winter temperatures, compared to average summer temperatures could slow the progression of morbidity or prevent SSWD mortality entirely in Pisaster ochraceus. Sea stars housed in cooler water progressed through SSWD states more slowly than sea stars housed at summer temperatures. However, the cooler temperature did not prevent SSWD mortality, and all stars died of the disease. Our data are consistent with experimental studies and field observations during previous and current outbreaks, and support the hypothesis that changes in coastal water temperatures have influenced one of the largest disease related mass mortality events in our oceans.  相似文献

The gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric properties of 19 catechol estrogens and catechol estrogen methyl ethers are reported. The gas chromatographic behaviour of the TMS-derivatives on the stationary phases OV-1, OV-3, OV-7, and OV-17 is examined and correlated with their molecular weight, shape, and polarity. The characteristic mass spectrometric features of the compounds result from the aromatic ring A, which is able to stabilize positive charge within the molecular ions. Consequently the molecular ions form the base peaks of the spectra. Fragmentation patterns highly specific for the catechols as well as for their monomethyl and dimethyl ethers are discussed and substantiated by determination of metastable ions and high resolution mass measurements.  相似文献

The solar system is thought to have begun in a flattened disk of gas and dust referred to traditionally as the solar nebula. Such a construct seems to be a natural product of the collapse of dense parts of giant molecular clouds, the vast star-forming regions that pepper the Milky Way and other galaxies. Gravitational, magnetic and thermal forces within the solar nebula forced a gradual evolution of mass toward the center (where the sun formed) and angular momentum (borne by a small fraction of the mass) toward the outer more distant regions of the disk. This evolution was accompanied by heating and a strong temperature contrast from the hot, inner regions to the cold, more remote parts of the disk. The resulting chemistry in the disk determined the initial distribution of organic matter in the planets; most of the reduced carbon species, in condensed form, were located beyond the asteroid belt (the outer solar system). The Earth could have received much of its inventory of pre-biological material from comets and other icy fragments of the process of planetary formation in the outer solar system.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Solid papillary carcinoma of the breast (SPCB) is a distinctive form of papillary carcinoma that tends to occur in older women and usually has a favorable prognosis. CASES: We report the cytologic and histologic findings in four cases of SPCB. All but one of the patients were elderly women (mean age, 66 years). Three patients presented with breast masses, and one patient presented with a breast mass and nipple discharge. Cytology demonstrated moderately to highly cellular smears with irregular groups of predominantly monolayered epithelium composed of small, polygonal or cuboidal cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm and rounded, eccentrically placed nuclei. Papillalike clusters with thin, fibrovascular cores were also observed. Immunocytochemical expression of synaptophysin was present in two cases. The diagnosis of SPBC was subsequently confirmed histologically and immunohistochemically. CONCLUSION: The FNA of SPCB displays some features that may be helpful in its correct identification preoperatively.  相似文献

Although bacterial polyketides are of considerable biomedical interest, the molecular biology of polyketide biosynthesis in Bacillus spp., one of the richest bacterial sources of bioactive natural products, remains largely unexplored. Here we assign for the first time complete polyketide synthase (PKS) gene clusters to Bacillus antibiotics. Three giant modular PKS systems of the trans-acyltransferase type were identified in Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB 42. One of them, pks1, is an ortholog of the pksX operon with a previously unknown function in the sequenced model strain Bacillus subtilis 168, while the pks2 and pks3 clusters are novel gene clusters. Cassette mutagenesis combined with advanced mass spectrometric techniques such as matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry revealed that the pks1 (bae) and pks3 (dif) gene clusters encode the biosynthesis of the polyene antibiotics bacillaene and difficidin or oxydifficidin, respectively. In addition, B. subtilis OKB105 (pheA sfp(0)), a transformant of the B. subtilis 168 derivative JH642, was shown to produce bacillaene, demonstrating that the pksX gene cluster directs the synthesis of that polyketide. "Greengold" is a large metallic cluster thought to contain 75 gold atoms in a compact 1.4-nm-diameter core surrounded by an organic shell. Scanning transmission electron microscope imaging shows uniform mass and size distributions with an apparent mass of 24 kDa, unaffected by radiation damage. The signal-to-noise ratio is adequate for visualization at low dose and in the presence of a relatively thick biological matrix. Under some conditions these clusters have a slight tendency to form linear chains and 2-D hexagonal arrays with a spacing of 2.6 nm. The parameters presented permit estimation of the feasibility of proposed labeling experiments.  相似文献

This study, using the cobalt chloride technique, clarifies the origin of the giant axons in the cockroach, Periplaneta. Each giant axon in the ventral nerve cord arises from a single cell body located in the sixth abdominal ganglion. The position of the soma is always contralateral to the giant axon; it projects anteriorly. In six giant neurons, the axonic and dendritic branches are ipsilateral while the somata are contralateral. In two neurons, both the soma and the dendritic branches are ipsilateral while the axons are contralateral. The dendritic arborizations of the giant neurons form a dense and compact mass of neuropile in each half of the posterior and middorsal part of the ganglion where sensory fibers, primarily from the cercal nerves terminate. The relation of these findings to earlier electrophysiological studies is discussed.  相似文献

Metallothioneins (MTs) are ubiquitous low molecular mass, cysteine-rich proteins with the ability to bind d10 metal ions in the form of metal-thiolate clusters. In contrast to the vertebrate forms, knowledge about the properties of members of the plant metallothionein family is still scarce. The amino acid sequences of plant MTs are distinctively different to the sequences of other MT species. The protein under investigation, Musa acuminata (banana) MT3, belongs to the plant MT fruit-specific p3 subfamily. With a total of 10 cysteine residues, MT3 features a cysteine content and percentage that is more comparable to fungal and prokaryotic MTs than to the well characterized mammalian iso-forms. The gene sequence encoding MT3 was cloned into a suitable vector and the protein was recombinantly overexpressed in Escherichia coli. MT3 is able to coordinate a maximum of four divalent d10 metal ions under the formation of metal-thiolate clusters. The hitherto unknown spectroscopic behavior of MT3 in combination with the metal ions Zn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, and Hg2+ will be presented and gives rise to the existence of a weaker metal ion coordination site. The pH stability of the investigated zinc and cadmium clusters is comparable to the values found for other plant metallothioneins though significantly lower than for the mammalian iso-forms. Possible metal-thiolate cluster structures will additionally be discussed.  相似文献

This review summarizes and integrates our current understanding of how sea stars make gametes. Although little is known of the mechanism of germ line formation in these animals, recent results point to specific cells and to cohorts of molecules in the embryos and larvae that may lay the ground work for future research efforts. A coelomic outpocketing forms in the posterior of the gut in larvae, referred to as the posterior enterocoel (PE), that when removed, significantly reduces the number of germ cell later in larval growth. This same PE structure also selectively accumulates several germ‐line associated factors—vasa, nanos, piwi—and excludes factors involved in somatic cell fate. Since its formation is relatively late in development, these germ cells may form by inductive mechanisms. When integrated into the morphological observations of germ cells and gonad development in larvae, juveniles, and adults, the field of germ line determination appears to have a good model system to study inductive germ line determination to complement the recent work on the molecular mechanisms in mice. We hope this review will also guide investigators interested in germ line determination and regulation of the germ line into how these animals can help in this research field. The review is not intended to be comprehensive—sea star reproduction has been studied for over 100 years and many reviews are comprehensive in their coverage of, for example, seasonal growth of the gonads in response to light, nutrient, and temperature.
