Geodia species north of 60°N in the Atlantic appeared in the literature for the first time when Bowerbank described Geodia barretti and G. macandrewii in 1858 from western Norway. Since then, a number of species have been based on material from various parts of the region: G. simplex, Isops phlegraei, I. pallida, I. sphaeroides, Synops pyriformis, G. parva, G. normani, G. atlantica, Sidonops mesotriaena (now called G. hentscheli), and G. simplicissima. In addition to these 12 nominal species, four species described from elsewhere are claimed to have been identified in material from the northeast Atlantic, namely G. nodastrella and G. cydonium (and its synonyms Cydonium muelleri and Geodia gigas). In this paper, we revise the boreo‐arctic Geodia species using morphological, molecular, and biogeographical data. We notably compare northwest and northeast Atlantic specimens. Biological data (reproduction, biochemistry, microbiology, epibionts) for each species are also reviewed. Our results show that there are six valid species of boreo‐arctic Atlantic Geodia while other names are synonyms or mis‐identifications. Geodia barretti, G. atlantica, G. macandrewii, and G. hentscheli are well established and widely distributed. The same goes for Geodia phlegraei, but this species shows a striking geographical and bathymetric variation, which led us to recognize two species, G. phlegraei and G. parva (here resurrected). Some Geodia are arctic species (G. hentscheli, G. parva), while others are typically boreal (G. atlantica, G. barretti, G. phlegraei, G. macandrewii). No morphological differences were found between specimens from the northeast and northwest Atlantic, except for G. parva. The Folmer cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) fragment is unique for every species and invariable over their whole distribution range, except for G. barretti which had two haplotypes. 18S is unique for four species but cannot discriminate G. phlegraei and G. parva. Two keys to the boreo‐arctic Geodia are included, one based on external morphology, the other based on spicule morphology. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

The deep sea has a high biodiversity and a characteristic bathyal fauna. Earlier evidence suggested that at least some shallow‐water species invaded the ecosystem followed by radiation leading to endemic deep‐sea lineages with a genetic and/or morphological similarity to their shallow‐water counterparts. The nematode Halomonhystera disjuncta has been reported from shallow‐water habitats and the deep sea [Håkon Mosby mud volcano (HMMV)], but the morphological features and the phylogenetic relationships between deep‐sea and shallow‐water representatives remain largely unknown. Furthermore, nothing is known about the genetic structure of the H. disjuncta population within the HMMV. This study is the first integrative approach in which the morphological and phylogenetic relationships between a deep‐sea and shallow‐water free‐living nematode species are investigated. To elucidate the phylogenetic relationships, we analysed the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (COI) and three nuclear ribosomal genes (Internal Transcribed Spacer region, 18S and the D2D3 region of 28S). Our results show that deep‐sea nematodes comprise an endemic lineage compared to the shallow‐water representatives with different morphometric features. COI genetic divergence between the deep‐sea and shallow‐water specimens ranges between 19.1% and 25.2%. Taking these findings into account, we conclude that the deep‐sea form is a new species. amova revealed no genetic structure across the HMMV, suggesting that nematodes are able to disperse efficiently in the mud volcano.  相似文献

Carnivorous sponges characteristically inhabit the deep sea, so extensive observations of the biology of living specimens are rare. We report on newly discovered shallow‐water (<30 m depth) populations of the carnivorous sponge Asbestopluma occidentalis and on observations of living adults and larvae from this unique group of sponges. In the Salish Sea, British Columbia, Canada, populations of A. occidentalis exist at depths as shallow as 18 m, where they co‐occur with hexactinellid sponges. Adults with and without embryos (n =127) were collected and easily maintained in the laboratory for several months, allowing continuous examination of live specimens. Parent sponges naturally disassociated their tissue, facilitating larval release and dispersal. Dispersed larvae had actively beating cilia, but no swimming was observed. Larvae settled and attached from several hours to several days post‐release. After larval release, parent sponges reaggregated their disassociated bodies into spherical balls of apparently undifferentiated tissue, which could also disperse and settle. Sexually mature adults were sampled in the field from August to November, with a high proportion of adults containing mature embryos in late November. High‐resolution photography and electron microscopy verified that adults were covered with anisochelae spicules, and used these to capture nauplii of Artemia sp. under experimental conditions; however, time‐lapse photography showed that some captured prey could free themselves with vigorous swimming. The occurrence of abundant shallow‐water populations of A. occidentalis in the Salish Sea provides a rare opportunity to study the evolution and ecology of carnivory in the Porifera.  相似文献

Species of the marine benthic dinoflagellate genus Gambierdiscus are the principal cause of Ciguatera fish poisoning. This genus has been recorded from tropical to temperate oceans, although Gambierdiscus species have rarely been found in Chinese waters. Our work revealed the morphological and genetic characteristics of three potentially toxic Gambierdiscus species observed in the temperate to subtropical waters of China. The fine thecal morphology was determined based on light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses, and these species were also characterized by sequencing the D1–D3 and D8–D10 regions of the LSU rDNA. The morphological and genetic data indicated that these three Gambierdiscus species were G. pacificus, G. australes and G. caribaeus. This work provides the first report of these species in Chinese waters, which increases the known species distribution of this genus.  相似文献

To determine the stability and specificity of microbes associated with the marine cold-water sponge Geodia barretti during cultivation, we compared the microbial community of freshly retrieved specimens to that of cultivated explants by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). G. barretti hosts a specific homogeneous microbial community in its mesohyl, which is maintained during a cultivation period of 8 months. In 10-day-old explants, bright colonies of unusually large bacterial cells, located predominantly at canal walls, were observed in addition to the common bacteria. Bacteria of the aberrant type included both lineages present in whole sponges and foreign ones, notably numerous genera of sulfate-reducing bacteria. We assume that these represent infectious bacteria that eluded the innate immune system of the sponge. Explants that resist these microbial attacks during the critical phase of cultivation eliminate infectious bacteria. The intrinsic microbial community of G. barretti is not affected by these infections and remains persistent over a cultivation period of at least several months.  相似文献

Exceptionally preserved specimens of Ernietta in a shallow‐marine gutter cast from southern Namibia reveal that all previously figured specimens of this iconic Ediacaran megafossil are incomplete, representing only the base of a larger and more complex organism. The complete organism is interpreted as comprising a buried, sand‐filled anchor exhibiting the classical Ernietta morphology that passes distally into a trunk that is crowned by two facing fans that extended into the overlying water column. All parts of Ernietta, from the base of its buried anchor to the tip of its fans, appear to have been composed of a palisade of tubular elements that have been variably preserved. Similarity of tubule morphology despite the inherent difference in function between these constructions supports the view that these tubes were integral to all anatomical parts and functions of Ernietta. This style of architecture, construction and function is unique to the Erniettomorpha, supporting the view that it represents an extinct Ediacaran clade in the early evolution of multi‐cellular life.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships in the family Delphinidae have been widely debated. We examined 347 skulls of Tursiops, Stenella, Delphinus, Steno, Lagenodelphis, and Sousa in order to resolve the phylogenetic position of Australian species of Tursiops. Five Tursiops type specimens were included. Cranial morphology was described using 2‐dimensional (2‐D) and 3‐dimensional geometric morphometrics (3‐GM), counts and categorical data. Analyses showed a clear morphological separation of Tursiops, including type specimens, from other genera. The three Stenella species did not cluster together. Stenella attenuata clustered with Delphinus delphis, and Stenella coeruleoalba with Lagenodelphis hosei. Length and width of the skull and rostrum were important discriminators in both methods. For 3‐D data, round vs. angular posterior skull shape distinguished some genera. Taxa that overlapped in the multivariate analyses had different mean tooth counts. Our study challenges genetic studies that identified Tursiops as polyphyletic, with T. aduncus closer to S. attenuata.  相似文献

The dorid nudibranchs Peltodoris lentiginosa and Archidoris odhneri were found on glass sponges (Porifera, Hexactinellida) during remotely operated vehicle surveys of three reefs in the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, Canada. Eight nudibranchs were sampled from 2009 to 2011. Identification of sponge spicules found in their gut and fecal contents confirmed the nudibranchs to be predators of the reef‐forming hexactinellids Aphrocallistes vastus and Heterochone calyx, as well as of the demosponge Desmacella austini, which encrusts skeletons of the glass sponges. Four of five nudibranchs dissected for gut content analysis had stomachs containing sponge spicules. Counts from high‐definition video footage taken during systematic surveys done in 2009 showed that nudibranchs were found in only two of the three glass sponge reefs. These data provide the first quantitative evidence of a molluscan predator on glass sponges found outside of Antarctica, and establish the first trophic link between glass sponges and their associated community of animals in a sponge reef ecosystem on the western Canadian continental shelf.  相似文献

Recent molecular analyses based on mitochondrial and nuclear markers place the Micrabaciidae in the basal clade of scleractinian corals. The molecular distinctiveness of micrabaciids is supported by a set of unique morphological characters, among which the microstructure of thickening deposits is the most characteristic one. In all extant and well‐preserved Mesozoic micrabaciids (extinct Micrabacia, and still living Letepsammia, Rhombopsammia, Stephanophyllia, Leptopenus), thickening deposits consist of irregular meshwork of small chip‐like bundles of fibres. Here, we document Neogene (Miocene and Pliocene) forms identified as Stephanophyllia whose thickening deposits consist of long and thin parallel fibres that, instead of bundles (like in majority of Scleractinia), form layers of thatch‐like structures that thicken the septa. This microstructural pattern distinguishes Neogene Stephanophyllia from all examined so far micrabaciids and suggests that mechanisms of biologically controlled mineralization within this clade were more diverse. Nonetheless, the group as a whole is still clearly separated microstructurally from other scleractinians. Despite their basal position in scleractinian phylogeny, the fossil record of Micrabaciidae starts only in the Lower Cretaceous. No Palaeozoic, Triassic or Jurassic forms that could be considered ancestral to micrabaciids and would share some microstructural or morphological (e.g. septal insertion pattern) characters have yet been found. Possible explanations of such morphological disparity of micrabaciids from other scleractinians are either sudden emergence by skeletonization of long evolved, soft‐bodied group of basal hexacorallians or migration of their skeletonized, deep‐water ancestors to shallow‐waters.  相似文献

In the red algal genus Gloiopeltis, five species (G. complanata, G. dura, G. frutex, G. furcata and G. tenax) are currently recognized, but genetic analyses have suggested considerably greater species diversity. Gloiopeltis specimens formed nine highly supported clades, six of which are morphologically referable to G. furcata. In order to identify the clade corresponding to true G. furcata, we examined the morphology and genetics of the type specimen of Dumontia furcata Postels & Ruprecht, the basionym of G. furcata, housed in the Herbarium of V.L. Komarov Botanical Institute (LE). A clade comprising the type and specimens from the northwestern to northeastern Pacific Ocean was determined to correspond G. furcata. We concluded that the type locality of G. furcata is Sitka, Alaska, based on the identity of haplotypes. We investigated the genetic divergence of populations within this species, using specimens covering most of its distributional range. We confirmed the merger of G. minuta and G. dura with G. furcata.  相似文献

Botting, J.P., Muir, L.A., Xiao, S., Li, X. & Lin, J.‐P. 2012: Evidence for spicule homology in calcareous and siliceous sponges: biminerallic spicules in Lenica sp. from the Early Cambrian of South China. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 463–475. The relationships of the extant sponge classes, and the nature of the last common ancestor of all sponges, are currently unclear. Early sponges preserved in the fossil record differ greatly from extant taxa, and therefore information from the fossil record is critical for testing hypotheses of sponge phylogenetic relationships that are based on modern taxa. New specimens of the enigmatic sponge Lenica sp., from the Early Cambrian Hetang Biota of South China, exhibit an unusual spicule structure. Each spicule consists of a siliceous core with an axial canal, an organic outer layer and a middle layer interpreted to have been originally calcium carbonate. This finding confirms previous work suggesting the existence of biminerallic spicules in early sponges. Combined with data from other early sponges, the new findings imply that the two fundamental spicule structures of modern sponges were derived from a compound, biminerallic precursor. Spicules are therefore homologous structures in Calcarea and Silicea, and if sponges are paraphyletic with respect to Eumetazoa, then spicules may also have been a primitive feature of Metazoa. □Calcarea, Early Cambrian, Hetang Biota, phylogeny, Silicea, taphonomy.  相似文献

Vegetation in water‐limited ecosystems relies strongly on access to deep water reserves to withstand dry periods. Most of these ecosystems have shallow soils over deep groundwater reserves. Understanding the functioning and functional plasticity of species‐specific root systems and the patterns of or differences in the use of water sources under more frequent or intense droughts is therefore necessary to properly predict the responses of seasonally dry ecosystems to future climate. We used stable isotopes to investigate the seasonal patterns of water uptake by a sclerophyll forest on sloped terrain with shallow soils. We assessed the effect of a long‐term experimental drought (12 years) and the added impact of an extreme natural drought that produced widespread tree mortality and crown defoliation. The dominant species, Quercus ilex, Arbutus unedo and Phillyrea latifolia, all have dimorphic root systems enabling them to access different water sources in space and time. The plants extracted water mainly from the soil in the cold and wet seasons but increased their use of groundwater during the summer drought. Interestingly, the plants subjected to the long‐term experimental drought shifted water uptake toward deeper (10–35 cm) soil layers during the wet season and reduced groundwater uptake in summer, indicating plasticity in the functional distribution of fine roots that dampened the effect of our experimental drought over the long term. An extreme drought in 2011, however, further reduced the contribution of deep soil layers and groundwater to transpiration, which resulted in greater crown defoliation in the drought‐affected plants. This study suggests that extreme droughts aggravate moderate but persistent drier conditions (simulated by our manipulation) and may lead to the depletion of water from groundwater reservoirs and weathered bedrock, threatening the preservation of these Mediterranean ecosystems in their current structures and compositions.  相似文献

Cyanobacterial diversity associated with sponges remains underestimated, though it is of great scientific interest in order to understand the ecology and evolutionary history of the symbiotic relationships between the two groups. Of the filamentous cyanobacteria, the genus Leptolyngbya is the most frequently found in association with sponges as well as the largest and obviously polyphyletic group. In this study, five Leptolyngbya‐like sponge‐associated isolates were investigated using a combination of molecular, chemical, and morphological approach and revealed a novel marine genus herein designated Leptothoe gen. nov. In addition, three new species of Leptothoe, Le. sithoniana, Le. kymatousa, and Le. spongobia, are described based on a suite of distinct characters compared to other marine Leptolyngbyaceae species/strains. The three new species, hosted by four sponge species, showed different degrees of host specificity. Leptothoe sithoniana and Le. kymatousa hosted by the sponges Petrosia ficiformis and Chondrilla nucula, respectively, seem to be more specialized than Le. spongobia, which was hosted by the sponges Dysidea avara and Acanthella acuta. All three species contained nitrogen‐fixing genes and may contribute to the nitrogen budget of sponges. Leptothoe spongobia TAU‐MAC 1115 isolated from Acanthella acuta was shown to produce microcystin‐RR indicating that microcystin production among marine cyanobacteria could be more widespread than previously determined.  相似文献

Systematic revision of the globally distributed deep‐sea ostracod genera Pennyella Neale, 1974 and Rugocythereis Dingle, Lord and Boomer, 1990, which have been considered to correspond, at least partially, to nomen nudum but widely used genus name ‘Oxycythereis,’ was conducted to reduce taxonomic uncertainty of these important components of the Modern and fossil deep‐sea ostracod community. Approximately 100 specimens from 18 species were examined, ranging in age from the Cretaceous to the present day. Nine new species are described: Pennyella rexi, Pennyella sanfordae, Pennyella liowae, Pennyella schellenbergi, Pennyella majorani, Pennyella iani, Pennyella ayressi, Rugocythereis melonis and Rugocythereis zarikiani. Emended generic concepts of Pennyella and Rugocythereis are proposed, and the palaeobiogeographical distributions of these two genera are discussed.  相似文献

The stem‐group priapulid Ottoia Walcott, 1911, is the most abundant worm in the mid‐Cambrian Burgess Shale, but has not been unambiguously demonstrated elsewhere. High‐resolution electron and optical microscopy of macroscopic Burgess Shale specimens reveals the detailed anatomy of its robust hooks, spines and pharyngeal teeth, establishing the presence of two species: Ottoia prolifica Walcott, 1911, and Ottoia tricuspida sp. nov. Direct comparison of these sclerotized elements with a suite of shale‐hosted mid‐to‐late Cambrian microfossils extends the range of ottoiid priapulids throughout the middle to upper Cambrian strata of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. Ottoiid priapulids represented an important component of Cambrian ecosystems: they occur in a range of lithologies and thrived in shallow water as well as in the deep‐water setting of the Burgess Shale. A wider survey of Burgess Shale macrofossils reveals specific characters that diagnose priapulid sclerites more generally, establishing the affinity of a wide range of Small Carbonaceous Fossils and demonstrating the prominent role of priapulids in Cambrian seas.  相似文献

A new basal land plant, Teruelia diezii gen. et sp. nov., is described from the shallow‐water marine deposits of the Lower Devonian (Lochkovian–Pragian) Nogueras Formation of the Iberian Peninsula (north Gondwana palaeocontinent). Teruelia is preserved as a compression fossil and consists of isotomously branched, robust stems terminated in large, fusiform, twisted sporangia. This morphology suggests that Teruelia is very probably equivalent to Aglaophyton, a permineralized early polysporangiophyte known up to now only from the Lower Devonian (early Pragian to ?earliest Emsian) Rhynie Chert in Scotland (Laurussia palaeocontinent), which represents an early terrestrial hot‐spring ecosystem. Accepted phylogenies identify Aglaophyton as sister to vascular plants. Our phylogeny‐based results identify the Aglaophyton/Teruelia biological entity (i.e. Aglaophyton anatomical characters plus Teruelia external morphology) as the most direct vascular plant precursor. It shows that at least one Rhynie Chert type plant had a much wider distribution than previously known and suggests that Aglaophyton was not restricted to hydrothermal environments, unlike other Rhynie Chert plants.  相似文献

The trace fossil Zoophycos characterized by complex, three‐dimensional morphology with systematic internal structures occurs throughout the Phanerozoic marine sediments. The specimens of Zoophycos examined herein consist of a downward and helical spreite and are a product of the excretory behaviour of endobenthic detritus feeders. They are divided into two basic types: pre‐Jurassic and post‐Cretaceous types on the basis of whorls of spreiten in a single specimen. The pre‐Jurassic type has fewer than four whorls. In contrast, most of the post‐Cretaceous specimens exhibit spreite with multiple coils more than ten whorls. The abrupt increase in whorl number during the Cretaceous suggests that the sedentary lifestyle of the producer should change from a short‐term stay to long‐term or permanent occupation of the same burrow. Timing of the lifestyle change the Zoophycos producers seems to be closely related to the deep‐seaward migration of their habitats. The change in lifestyle and migration of Zoophycos‐producing animals during the Cretaceous might be attributable to the establishment of eutrophic bottom conditions in the deep sea. These changes seem to be associated with the flux of large amounts of phytodetrital food produced by phytoplankton, which experienced an explosive increase in species diversity during the Late Jurassic to the Late Cretaceous. The series of changes in lifestyle and habitat of the Zoophycos animals during the Late Mesozoic can serve as one piece of geological evidence for the ‘benthic‐pelagic coupling model’.  相似文献

  • Temperate tree species differ in their physiological sensitivity to declining soil moisture and drought. Although species‐specific responses to drought have often been suggested to be the result of different water uptake depths, empirical evidence for such a mechanism is scarce.
  • Here we test if differences in water uptake depths can explain previously observed species‐specific physiological responses of temperate trees to drought and if the water uptake depth of different species varies in response to declining soil moisture. For this purpose, we employed stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopes of soil and xylem water that we collected over the course of three growing seasons in a mature temperate forest in Switzerland.
  • Our data show that all investigated species utilise water from shallow soil layers during times of sufficient soil water supply. However, Fraxinus excelsior, Fagus sylvatica and Acer pseudoplatanus were able to shift their water uptake to deeper soil layers when soil water availability decreased in the topsoil. In contrast, Picea abies, was not able to shift its water uptake to deeper soil layers.
  • We conclude from our data that more drought‐resistant tree species are able to shift their water uptake to deeper soil layers when water availability in the topsoil is becoming scarce. In addition, we were able to show that water uptake depth of temperate tree species is a trait with high plasticity that needs to be characterised across a range of environmental conditions.
