Long-term studies of invasive populations are rare, which is unfortunate because important aspects of their dynamics may only be detected over long term. For instance, invasive populations can experience substantial population declines, or even crashes, sometime after their introduction and invasion. Potamopyrgus antipodarum (Caenogastropoda) is a successful invader, and is rarely parasitized in introduced areas. In France, the snail is parasitized as first intermediate host by only one trematode species (Aporocotylid sp. I), native to the snail’s home range, New Zealand. Here, we examined the dynamics of the molluscan assemblage in a French stream on a 14-year interval (2000–2004 and 2009–2013), focusing on this introduced host-parasite association. Overall, P. antipodarum was numerically dominant (90.80%) among molluscs, also including sphaeriid clams (9.12%) and pulmonate snails (0.08%). However, during the last monitoring period, we found a substantial population decline of P. antipodarum, potentially driven by environmental change, such as decreased water temperature and depth, and possibly competitive interactions with sphaeriids, which became numerically dominant (56.34%). P. antipodarum was the only mollusc found infected and only by Aporocotylid sp. I. Interestingly, despite low monthly prevalence (from 0 to 1.52%) and snail host population decline, the P. antipodarum-aporocotylid relationship appeared to be persistent over time.  相似文献

The vulnerability of gastropods to their predators varies with life history traits such as morphology, body size, behavior, and growth rates as well as predator size. A recent study suggested that the invasive apple snail, Pomacea maculata, was considerably more vulnerable to crayfish predators than the native Florida apple snail, P. paludosa. The difference was hypothesized to be caused by the relatively small hatchling size of P. maculata. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a series of feeding assays designed to quantify maximum feeding rates and selective foraging of crayfish on apple snails. The rate at which crayfish killed individual P. maculata (i.e., kill rates) decreased with snail size, and kill rates on both species increased with crayfish size. Kill rates on juvenile P. maculata were higher than kill rates on size-matched hatchling P. paludosa, and crayfish fed selectively on P. maculata when offered mixed groups of size-matched snails. Further analyses revealed that hatchling P. paludosa possess shells 1.8× heavier than size-matched P. maculata suggesting differences in vulnerability to crayfish were consistent with interspecific differences in shell defenses. Differences in hatchling size and defensive traits in combination make crayfish kill rates on hatchling P. maculata approximately 15.4× faster than on hatchling P. paludosa, but the relative contribution of hatchling size to differences in apple snail vulnerability was >3× greater than the contribution of defensive traits.  相似文献

This study describes and quantifies morphological valve traits of the ostracod Limnocythere rionegroensis from Patagonian steppe lakes and explores their association with lake water characteristics. Surface ornamentation was examined by scanning electron and transmitted light microscopy, and valve size and shape were analyzed using morphometric techniques. Limnocythere rionegroensis shows remarkable variations in surface ornamentation, based on which three morphotypes (MI, MII, and MIII) were identified. Valves of morphotypes MI and MIII are larger, show slight to moderate external reticulation, and a higher shape variability, whereas MII is characterized by a very conspicuous reticulation, lower shape variability, and smaller valves. Outline analysis yielded a great shape disparity related to the dorsal margin slope. MI was found in sexual populations from euhaline to mesohaline ephemeral lake; MII occurs in parthenogenetic populations from mesohaline to oligohaline permanent or ephemeral lakes; and MIII, from both sexual and asexual populations, inhabits a broad range of environmental conditions in terms of salinity and stability. Limnocythere rionegroensis intraspecific variations may be caused by environmental parameters and genetic factors associated to reproductive strategies. These results contribute to the knowledge of extant L. rionegroensis morphological variability and provide additional clues to improve the environmental interpretation of fossil assemblages.  相似文献

Predators may have consumptive (lethal) and non-consumptive (sub-lethal) effects on prey. Non-consumptive effects include altered behavior and reduced growth and fecundity. Native prey may not recognize non-native predators as a threat, and therefore may suffer pronounced effects. Additionally, non-native predators may elicit different behavioral responses from prey compared to native predators. Theory predicts that consumptive effects should be greater for non-native predators (due to prey naiveté), and non-consumptive effects should be greater for native predators (due to predator recognition). To test these hypotheses, I monitored bicolor damselfish (Stegastes partitus) in the presence of invasive predatory Pacific lionfish (Pterois spp.), a native predator (graysby, Cephalopholis cruentata), and an egg predator (bluehead wrasse, Thalassoma bifasciatum). Body size and location of lionfish and graysby were monitored on reefs in the Bahamas. Bicolor fecundity was measured as the number and size of egg-masses that individual fish laid. Bicolor fecundity was negatively correlated with lionfish density but not graysby or bluehead density. Neither predator had a detectable effect on bicolor body size, but lionfish density was negatively correlated with the size of mature adult damselfish. I observed behavioral responses of bicolors to the two piscivores, to bluehead wrasse, and to two herbivorous fishes (Acanthurus coeruleus, Scarus spp.) as non-aggressive controls. Bicolors changed behavior (feeding and aggression) in the presence of all native fishes, but not in the presence of lionfish. Thus, differential effects exist between native and non-native predators, and invasive lionfish pose a non-consumptive threat to bicolor damselfish via reduced growth and fecundity.  相似文献

Organisms featuring wide trait variability and occurring in a wide range of habitats, such as the ovoviviparous New Zealand freshwater snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum, are ideal models to study adaptation. Since the mid‐19th century, P. antipodarum, characterized by extremely variable shell morphology, has successfully invaded aquatic areas on four continents. Because these obligately and wholly asexual invasive populations harbor low genetic diversity compared to mixed sexual/asexual populations in the native range, we hypothesized that (1) this phenotypic variation in the invasive range might be adaptive with respect to colonization of novel habitats, and (2) that at least some of the variation might be caused by phenotypic plasticity. We surveyed 425 snails from 21 localities across northwest Europe to attempt to disentangle genetic and environmental effects on shell morphology. We analyzed brood size as proxy for fitness and shell geometric morphometrics, while controlling for genetic background. Our survey revealed 10 SNP genotypes nested into two mtDNA haplotypes and indicated that mainly lineage drove variation in shell shape but not size. Physicochemical parameters affected both shell shape and size and the interaction of these traits with brood size. In particular, stronger stream flow rates were associated with larger shells. Our measurements of brood size suggested that relatively larger slender snails with relatively large apertures were better adapted to strong flow than counterparts with broader shells and relatively small apertures. In conclusion, the apparent potential to modify shell morphology plays likely a key role in the invasive success of P. antipodarum; the two main components of shell morphology, namely shape and size, being differentially controlled, the former mainly genetically and the latter predominantly by phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

A phenotypic response, either plastic or evolved, is often required for successful invasion of novel environments. Populations of the invasive snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum have colonized a wide range of environments in the western U. S. since 1985, but the extent of plastic adjustment and evolved adaptation to local environments is largely unknown. We examined variation in shell morphology among four sites in the Snake River, Idaho, including both still-water and free-flowing river habitats and compared the variation to that of a native snail (Pyrgulopsis robusta) using geometric morphometric techniques. Using Generalized Procrustes analysis, we tested for phenotypic responses by determining (1) whether Po. antipodarum from the four locations differed in shell morphology, and (2) whether these snails exhibited corresponding shell shape variation with sympatric populations of a native snail. Both native and invasive snails exhibited similar variation in shell morphology across three of the four sites. The Canonical Variate assignment test grouped 85 % of both snail species to their rightful sample site. In addition, the Principal Component Analysis displayed similar patterns of shell variation across the four sites, indicating parallel variation in shell shape. For three of the four sites, both the native and invasive snails exhibited differences in shell shape consistent with water flow variation (still-water versus fast free-flowing river). Taken together, these results suggest that the shell shape of the invasive snail has changed either through plasticity or evolution, and that both native and invasive snail populations responded to local environmental conditions in a similar manner.  相似文献

A new species of Orbilia related to O. luteorubella is described mainly based on morphological characters of its asexual morph and molecular data. The sexual morph does not significantly differ from O. luteorubella, whereas the asexual morph obtained from its ascospore isolate resembles members of the non-predacious genus Dactylella, because it has fusiform phragmoconidia borne singly at the apex of conidiophores. Phylogenetic analysis showed that this strain clustered with a clade that included available strains of the O. luteorubella aggregate and was distant from all analysed Dactylella species. Within this clade, the new strain fell between species with filiform conidia and those of a Pseudotripoconidium anamorph. By combining morphological and phylogenetic analyses, we conclude that our isolate belongs to a new taxon. Pleomorphism of the new taxon is described and discussed.  相似文献

Successive generations of bi- and multivoltine species encounter differing biotic and abiotic environments intra-annually. The question of whether selection can independently adjust the relationship between body size and components of reproductive effort within successive generations in response to generation-specific environmental variation is applicable to a diversity of taxa. Herein, we develop a conceptual framework that illustrates increasingly independent life history adjustments between successive generations of taxa exhibiting complex life cycles. We apply this framework to the reproductive biology of the gall-forming insect, Belonocnema treatae (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae). This bivoltine species expresses cyclical parthenogenesis in which alternating sexual and asexual generations develop in different seasons and different environments. We tested the hypotheses that ecological divergence between the alternate generations is accompanied by generational differences in body size, egg size, and egg number and by changes in the relationships between body size and these components of reproductive effort. Increased potential reproductive effort of sexual generation B. treatae is attained by increased body size and egg number (with no trade-off between egg number and egg size) and by a significant increase in the slope of the relationship between body size and potential fecundity. These generation-specific relationships, interpreted in the context of the model framework, suggest that within each generation selection has independently molded the relationships relating body size to potential fecundity and potential reproductive effort in B. treatae. The conceptual framework is broadly applicable to comparisons involving the alternating generations of bi- and multivoltine species.  相似文献

The Golovinomyces biocellatus complex consists of powdery mildew (Erysiphales) species restricted to hosts of the family Lamiaceae. Previous authors used minor morphological features of the sexual state and host range data to split the complex. The data, however, were not sufficient to define a convincing species concept. Our taxonomic study is based on molecular phylogenetic and asexual state morphology data. For morphological studies, mainly features of the asexual morph (conidiophores, conidia, germination patterns) were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Detailed line drawings of asexual state features are provided. For phylogenetic analyses, two markers (rDNA: ITS, LSU) of 64 specimens were applied. The phylogeny resulted in two major clades. Clade I consists of specimens with Lamiaceae hosts and three specimens of Verbena. Clade II consists of two sister groups, the first (IIa) with Salvia spp. and the second (IIb) with Lycopus europaeus (the type host G. biocellatus) and Glechoma. Clades I and IIb and two subclades of IIa with Salvia hosts are characterized by specific morphological traits (differences in conidiophore length, conidial shape, width, and germination patterns). Based on these data, we suggest to consider specimens of clades I (including specimens on Verbena) and IIb and the two subclades of IIa as distinct species, namely G. monardae, G. biocellatus, G. salviae, and G. neosalviae sp. nov. A key for the identification of species based on asexual state features is provided. The results are discussed with respect to host range, jumps, co-evolutionary aspects, and distribution patterns.  相似文献

Cryptic species may cause biological invasions to be overlooked leading to underestimation of the potential impacts of invaders on the new ecosystems. Identification of freshwater snails is challenging because of the scarcity of discriminative morphological characters and the limited taxonomic knowledge of some taxa. Here, molecular and morphological analyses were performed to investigate the identity of viable populations of the genus Physa in aquatic ecosystems of different basins in northern and central Chile, including habitats where the native species Physa chilensis and Physa nodulosa have been traditionally recognized. Molecular analyses based on mitochondrial DNA sequences from the small subunit 16S rDNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 identified all specimens sequenced as belonging to the globally invasive species Physa acuta. Microscopic examination of the radula and morphological observations of the reproductive system were congruent with these findings. Highly divergent haplotypes found in El Salto suggest multiple introductions of different lineages of the invader in this locality. It is clear that for future management planning a more reliable assessment of the status of P. chilensis and P. nodulosa is required.  相似文献

Changes in the composition of biological communities can be elicited by competitive exclusion, wherein a species is excluded from viable habitat by a superior competitor. Yet less is known about the role of environmental change in facilitating or mitigating exclusion in the context of invasive species. In these situations, decline in a native species can be due to the effects of habitat change, or due to direct effects from invasive species themselves. This is summarized by the “driver-passenger” concept of native species loss. We present a multi-year study of tree squirrels that tested the hypothesis that tree canopy fragmentation, often a result of human development, influenced the replacement of native western gray tree squirrels (Sciurus griseus) by non-native eastern gray tree squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis). We tested this hypothesis along a continuum of invasion across three study sites in central California. We found that within the developed areas of the University of California at Santa Cruz campus and city of Santa Cruz, S. carolinensis excluded S. griseus from viable habitat. The competitive advantage of S. carolinensis may be due to morphological and/or behavioral adaptation to terrestrial life in fragmented hardwood forests. We classify S. carolinensis as a “driver” of the decline of native S. griseus in areas with high tree canopy fragmentation. Future habitat fragmentation in western North America may result in similar invasion dynamics between these species. Our study warrants consideration of existing and predicted interactions between potentially invasive species that co-occur with native species where land use change is proposed.  相似文献

Irrespective of its causes, strong population genetic structure indicates a lack of gene flow. Understanding the processes that underlie such structure, and the spatial patterns it causes, is valuable for conservation efforts such as restoration. On the other hand, when a species is invasive outside its native range, such information can aid management in the non-native range. Here we explored the genetic characteristics of the Australian tree Acacia dealbata in its native range. Two subspecies of A. dealbata have previously been described based on morphology and environmental requirements, but recent phylogeographic data raised questions regarding the validity of this taxonomic subdivision. The species has been widely planted within and outside its native Australian range and is also a highly successful invasive species in many parts of the world. We employed microsatellite markers to investigate the population genetic diversity and structure among 42 A. dealbata populations from across the species’ native range. We also tested whether environmental variables purportedly relevant for the putative separation of subspecies are linked with population genetic differentiation. We found no relationship between population genetic structure of A. dealbata in Australia and these environmental features. Rather, we identified two geographically distinct genetic clusters that corresponded with populations in the northeastern part of mainland Australia, and the southern mainland and Tasmanian range of the species. Our results do not support the taxonomic subdivision of the species into two distinct subspecies based on environmental features. We therefore assume that the observed morphological differences between the putative subspecies are plastic phenotypic responses. This study provides population genetic information that will be useful for the conservation of the species within Australia as well as to better understand the invasion dynamics of A. dealbata.  相似文献

Orbilia georgiana and O. renispora are described as new species to science, in addition, O. eucalypti, O. occulta, and O. xanthoguttulata are reported based on collections taken from the state of Georgia, USA. Orbilia xanthoguttulata is a new record for North America. The morphology of all species is described based on both sexual and asexual morphs. Asexual morphs were obtained from ascospore isolates, from which also DNA was extracted and used to amplify rDNA genes (ITS and LSU) for phylogenetic comparison.  相似文献

Harmonia axyridis Pallas (1773) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is the well-studied system of invasive insect species. Native and invasive parts of the area of H. axyridis are isolated geographically. We studied the species composition and the distribution of bacterial symbionts Spiroplasma and Rickettsia in seven localities of the native area and six localities of the invasive area of H. axyridis. Rickettsia was detected in H. axyridis populations for the first time. We found that the proportion of beetles infected with Rickettsia in native and invasive populations of H. axyridis is about 0.03. Spiroplasma was found only in native populations of H. axyridis. The proportion of infected individuals with Spiroplasma in native populations of H. axyridis is about 0.08. All studied native populations of H. axyridis are infected with Spiroplasma, while all invasive populations are not. We discuss the possible influence of Spiroplasma and Rickettsia in the formation of invasive populations of H. axyridis.  相似文献

Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) is often considered one of the most aggressive macrophyte invaders in freshwater habitats throughout the USA. However, conditions leading to successful milfoil invasions are not well understood. This study sought to illuminate the role of herbivores in determining milfoil invasion success via the potential mechanisms of enemy release and biotic resistance. We determined feeding preferences of three herbivores native to the northeastern United States and measured macrophyte phenolic content, which may act as an herbivore feeding deterrent. We found that phenolic content in milfoil was more than two times higher than in the most abundant native macrophytes at our study sites, consistent with enemy release. However, laboratory feeding experiments demonstrated that milfoil phenolics did not deter amphipod (Hyalella azteca), snail (Physella sp.), or weevil (Euhrychiopsis lecontei) herbivory. Furthermore, amphipod consumption rates in our study were an order of magnitude higher than amphipod consumption rates reported in milfoil’s native range, contrary to the predictions of enemy release. Amphipods and snails from habitats invaded by milfoil consumed similar quantities of both milfoil and the low-phenolic native plant Elodea canadensis. In contrast, weevils consumed milfoil but not E. canadensis in choice experiments. Amphipods collected from milfoil-free habitats also readily consumed milfoil, and they consumed 2.5 times more milfoil than E. canadensis in a choice feeding trial. These results suggest that high phenolic levels do not prevent native herbivores from consuming invasive milfoil. Instead, native generalist grazers like amphipods and snails may limit milfoil proliferation and provide a measure of biotic resistance.  相似文献

Two novel species of bambusicolous fungi in the genus Kamalomyces, collected from northern Thailand, are described and illustrated herein. Kamalomyces bambusicola and K. thailandicus spp. nov. are typical of the genus Kamalomyces (Tubeufiaceae, Tubeufiales) and are morphologically distinct from known species with respect to their size of ascomata, asci and ascospores, ascospore septation and peridium structure, including the subiculum comprising hyphae on the host surface. Morphological examination reveals that the asexual morph of K. bambusicola is associated with its sexual morph in a subiculum forming dictyochlamydosporous conidia, which are similar to the asexual morph of Chlamydotubeufia. Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, ITS and TEF1-α sequence data also support these two species as distinct and confirm their phylogenetic affinities within the Tubeufiaceae. In particular, Kamalomyces shares a close phylogenetic relationship to Helicoma.  相似文献

Published and original data indicating evolutionary conservation of the morphofunctional organization of reserve stem cells providing for asexual and sexual reproduction of invertebrates are reviewed. Stem cells were studied in representatives of five animal types: archeocytes in sponge Oscarella malakhovi (Porifera), large interstitial cells in colonial hydroid Obelia longissima (Cnidaria), neoblasts in an asexual race of planarian Girardia tigrina (Platyhelmintes), stem cells in colonial rhizocephalans Peltogasterella gracilis, Polyascus polygenea, and Thylacoplethus isaevae (Arthropoda), and colonial ascidian Botryllus tuberatus (Chordata). Stem cells in animals of such diverse taxa feature the presence of germinal granules, are positive for proliferating cell nuclear antigen, demonstrate alkaline phosphatase activity (a marker of embryonic stem cells and primary germ cells in vertebrates), and rhizocephalan stem cells express the vasa-like gene (such genes are expressed in germline cells of different metazoans). The self-renewing pool of stem cells is the cellular basis of the reproductive strategy including sexual and asexual reproduction.  相似文献

The effect of the natural oxylipins 3(R)-hydroxy-(5Z,8Z,11Z,14Z)-eicosatetraenoic acid (3-HETE) and 18-hydroxy-(9Z,12Z)-octadecadienoic acids (18-HODE) on the growth and hypha aggregation, as well as on some light-depending processes, such as carotenoid biosynthesis, protoperithecia formation (sexual cycle), and conidiation (asexual cycle), of the ascomycete Neurospora crassa was studied. Hypha aggregation and growth slowdown were induced by 3-HETE, 18-HODE, and linoleic acid. At concentrations from 5 to 50 μM, these compounds had no significant effect on the light-induced carotenogenesis. At the same time, these 3-HETE and 18-HODE concentrations, unlike linoleic acid, induced the formation of protoperithecia in the dark. At the concentration of 5 μM, an additive effect of oxylipins and light was revealed. The studied oxylipins had different effects on the asexual reproduction of N. crassa: 3-HETE induced conidiation in the dark, whereas 18-HODE induced conidiation in the light. The possible involvement of oxylipins in the regulation of the processes of sexual and asexual reproduction of N. crassa is discussed.  相似文献

A PCR-based technique, involving the random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD), was used for assessing genetic relatedness among isolates of the genus Phoma. Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) revealed the presence of interspecific genetic variation among the pigment producing isolates of Phoma and has shown distinct phylogenetic cluster. The major objective of the study was to study the genetic variation, if any. Study was aimed to differentiate four pigment producing species of Phoma based on morphological studies and molecular markers in general and RAPD in particular. We found that the test species of Phoma can be very well differentiated using molecular markers. Phoma sorghina was differentiated from P. exigua, P. fimeti and P. herbarum. RAPD profiles of P. herbarum and P. fimeti has shown the maximum similarity, which indicates the genetic relatedness among these two species which were considered earlier as distinct species based on morphological observation.  相似文献

North America is home to both native and invasive earthworms acting as ecosystem engineers as they build burrows that can serve as habitat for other species or otherwise alter soil structure, affecting nutrient cycling and other ecosystem processes. Here I determine where and what earthworm species commonly occur in my study area, and compare effects of native and invasive earthworms on the common woodland salamander, Plethodon cinereus, in field surveys and laboratory experiments. The native earthworm Eisenoides carolinensis was the most common earthworm, followed by two invasive species Dendrobaena octaedra and Octolasion tyrtaeum. The presence of O. tyrtaeum was associated with a narrower O-horizon (i.e., organic layer in the soil). Using structural equation modeling to explore direct and indirect pathways of these three most common earthworm species on salamanders, I found O. tyrtaeum occurrence was negatively correlated with nighttime salamander counts, a proxy for total salamander numbers, mediated by negative effects on O-horizon depth and microinvertebrate numbers. In the laboratory, O. tyrtaeum and D. octaedra consumed more leaf litter per gram of earthworm per day than the native E. carolinensis. However, salamanders consumed earthworms and used burrows of all native and invasive species of earthworms similarly. The potential for negative indirect effects of the invasive earthworm O. tyrtaeum on P. cinereus was demonstrated both in the field and laboratory, highlighting that seemingly small differences between native and invasive ecosystem engineers have the potential to significantly alter the effects of these closely related native and invasive organisms.  相似文献
